Thunder Bay's ready for busy cruise ship season with more ships on the horizon
14 more ship visits expected during 2023.
Social Sharing
Thunder Bay has said goodbye to the first cruise ship that docked for the 2023 season, but there are plenty left to come.
The Viking Octantis opened the season with a multi-day stop at Pool 6 last weekend. And city tourism manager Paul Pepe said a total of 15 cruise ship stops by four different ships have been booked for this season.
"The Octantis and the sister ship the Polaris are both here in port throughout the year, and then we have Hapag-Lloyd's Hanseatic Inspiration arriving for the first of two visits on June 5," he said. "And then we have American Queen Voyages returning with the Ocean Navigator on June 10."
And next year is looking even better: Pepe said so far, 24 stops by five ships have been booked for the 2024 cruise season.
"Definitely we're seeing a huge increase in activity amongst the global discovery cruising industry," Pepe said. "They're discovering the Great Lakes, and more specifically, they're discovering Lake Superior and Thunder Bay."
- Dockside market planned for Thunder Bay marina
"That market is definitely picking up, and judging by what we hear in terms of the occupancy rates on board these vessels, they're all selling well, and people are really interested to learn more about the Great Lakes."
"So the future is looking optimistic for for this new brand of tourism."
And when the next ship arrives on June 5, passengers will have another attraction to visit: the Transportation Museum of Thunder Bay plans to have its new dockside market up-and-running by then.
The market, which was announced earlier this month, will be located in a fenced-off area west of the cruise ship dock, near the Alexander Henry museum ship.
The market will pop-up when cruise ships are docked there, giving local businesses and artisans a chance to sell their wares directly to passengers.
"We've brought in a load of earth and and levelled out the area," museum chair Wally Peterson said. "We've put down sod on the area, and we're watering it and and getting it all set down and and ready."
"All I'm waiting for now is the gravel ... to put the path in that we're going to have, and we're expecting that in the next couple of days."
Peterson said about 15 vendors have shown interest in participating so far.
"We're looking forward to the next ships," Peterson said.

Port Milwaukee WI cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.
Milwaukee WI is a Lake Michigan cruise port and city, ranked by population (around 595,000) state's biggest and Midwestern USA's 5th-largest (after Chicago , Columbus, Indianapolis, Detroit ). The city is on Lake Michigan's western shore and is also the main economic and cultural center of Milwaukee-Racine-Waukesha Metro (total population over 2 million).
Being one of the Great Lakes , Lake Michigan has surface area (22300 mi2/58000 km2), water volume (1180 mi3/4900 km3) max depth (925 ft/282 m), cities in Illinois ( Chicago ), Indiana (Gary), Wisconsin ( Green Bay , Sheboygan, Milwaukee, Kenosha, Racine) and Michigan ( Muskegon , Traverse City ).
In 2014, Port Milwaukee handled a total of 2,4 million MT (metric tons) of shipped cargoes. Regularly scheduled Lake Express ferries link the port with Muskegon (Michigan) across Lake Michigan. The high-speed catamaran ferry Lake Express (2004-built, IMO 9329253) is a car-and-passenger ferryboat serving the Lake Michigan route Wisconsin-Michigan (Milwaukee-Muskegon) with a crossing time of ~2,5 hours.
Milwaukee Port's cruising season runs June through October, with annual around 5-6 visiting vessels. In 2018, the cruise port handled 5 vessels and ~3200 passengers. In 2019 were handled 10 cruise ships.
In mid-December 2020, the Port signed an agreement for homeporting the cruise ship MS Pearl Mist for 9 years (2021 through 2030), with an option for the small cruise company Pearl Seas Management LLC (USA-based, operating with its brand "Pearl Seas Cruises") to extend the service through 2040. The exclusive deal provides the company with priority docking rights at Milwaukee's downtown dock located east of Discovery World, Pier Wisconsin. The deal guaranteed the cruise ship Pearl Mist to use Pier Wisconsin as homeport (for turnaround operations / roundtrips) at least 5 times per year. The ship is required to provide minimum annual rents of USD 42100 (starting in 2021), which must gradually increase to USD 50000 (by 2026) and USD 60000 (by 2036). MS Pearl Mist's itinerary includes Port Milwaukee as debarkation port (for westward Great Lakes voyages) end embarkation port (for eastward sailings).
In 2022, Viking Expeditions started a seasonal Great Lakes cruise program with one ship deployment and one-ways (8-day itineraries) between homeports Toronto , Thunder Bay ON and Milwaukee WI. After debarkation in Thunder Bay, passengers return to Milwaukee by air, and the cruise ship embarks another group of travelers (flown to Thunder Bay) for the return voyage (via Duluth MN ) to Milwaukee. The boat was scheduled to stay in homeport overnight (for ~48 hours) on each call.
The 8-day voyages are themed "Niagara and the Great Lakes" (from Toronto to Milwaukee), "Undiscovered Great Lakes" (from Thunder Bay to Milwaukee) and "Great Lakes Explorer" (from Milwaukee to Thunder Bay). Viking Great Lakes cruises feature passing through Soo Locks at Sault Ste Marie (Lake Superior - Lake Huron transition).
In 2023, Port Milwaukee had scheduled a total of 31 cruise ship calls bringing ~12000 tourists to the city.
Currently, the largest by capacity Great Lakes cruise companies are Viking Cruises USA ( Viking Octantis , Viking Polaris ), AQV-American Queen Voyages (ships Ocean Navigator , Ocean Voyager ), Pearl Seas Cruises ( Pearl Mist ), and the Canadian company St Lawrence Cruise Lines ( Canadian Empress ). Other travel brands that offer Great Lakes voyages are PONANT and Tauck ( fleet ).
Fur traders and French Catholic missionaries were the first Europeans in the Milwaukee area. The settlement was founded in 1818 by Solomon Juneau (Canadian explorer), and in 1846 was combined with two neighboring towns. In the 1840s here arrived numerous German and Polish immigrants.
The city's best-known tourist attractions include Milwaukee Riverwalk (waterfront promenade), Pier Wisconsin (cruise dock), Miller Park, Wisconsin Center, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Milwaukee Art Museum, UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena, modern buildings (in premium neighborhoods close to the lakefront), large nature parks (with facilities for picnics, BBQ grilling, sunbathing, ice-skating, disc golfing). The city has over 6100 hectares (61 km2) of parks and parkways.

Three different cruise ships will visit Thunder Bay next year
- Share by Email

THUNDER BAY — The 2022 cruise ship season is over, but planning for next year is well underway.
The 378-passenger Viking Octantis made its last "turnaround" stopover in Thunder Bay on the weekend.
Although it will return next year only three times, Tourism Thunder Bay manager Paul Pepe says it sister ship, Viking Polaris, will make half a dozen day-stops in the city.
Just as it did this year, the Octantis will drop its passengers off in Thunder Bay and replace them with a new set of passengers who've travelled to the city by air. The visits by the Polaris will be four-hour stays.
As well, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises' 230-passenger Hanseatic Inspiration is scheduled to stop in Thunder Bay on two occasions.
"So we have 11 ship visits in 2023. We've gained so much knowledge this year on meeting the logistical needs of these new, modern ships that we're feeling really comfortable and confident for next year," Pepe said in an interview. He said he's enjoyed meeting passengers at the Pool 6 dock, finding out where they're from and what they'd like to explore.
"A lot of folks are going downtown, looking for local beer, looking for local food, and looking for local gifts. It's fun to engage visitors, and that feedback helps us build a better experience for next year."
The total number of cruise ship visits to the city last year was nine, including seven by the Octantis and two by American Queen Voyage's Ocean Navigator.
Pepe said signs point toward the continuing expansion of cruising on the Great Lakes, including Lake Superior.
"There's growing global interest, and that bodes well for Thunder Bay," he said. In a sign of that increasing attention, the New York Times published a lengthy article last week about the return of cruise ships to Lake Superior.
Pepe said he and his staff are in the process of calculating the overall economic benefits from cruise ship visits this season.
"There's a lot of other services a ship takes on here. There's liquid and solid waste removal, and taking on food supplies. A vessel also orders supplies for its operation...There's shuttle operators, motor coach operators, tour guides, cab companies. The list is quite extensive."
Pepe estimated the total economic impact this year will be somewhere between $4 million and $4.2 million, including accommodations rented by passengers, many of whom spent two or more days in Thunder Bay while waiting to board the Octantis.
This year saw the first cruise ships to stop in Thunder Bay since 2013.

Thunder bay gets upgrade for cruise ships.
A little snow wasn’t stopping work on the cruise ship dock, as workers install new tie down bollards, rubber dock fenders and security fencing while contracting crews crush the rubble from the former Pool Six. “That really helps set the stage to begin the transformation of that site,” said Paul Pepe, manager of Tourism Thunder Bay.
“We are working on dock improvements towards the first arrival on the 26th of May of Viking Expeditions’ Viking Octantis, which is a huge vessel measuring 665 feet long and will take up most of the dock behind the Alexander Henry.”
Everything is still on schedule for the 2022 cruise ship arrivals this year. The Viking line has seven scheduled turnarounds in Thunder Bay with their first five cruises completely sold out.
“They’re selling very well and the other cruises are selling very strongly as well,” said Pepe.
Later this month, Pepe will take part in Seatrade Cruise Global,a major international cruise shipping conference in Miami Beach to learn more about the industry and promote Thunder Bay as an international port.
“Miami is where a lot of cruise lines either have their head offices or have North American branch offices,” he said.
“There’s cruise lines there, there’s 10,000 delegates, 500 exhibitors, it’s our first time in about five years back at that show.”
Now that Thunder Bay has an elevated presence as a turnaround port, Pepe says “it’s important for us to maintain our presence on the national and international scope to grow that reputation even more.”
“It’s also an opportunity for us to meet with other ports and learn best practices from one another, like how we can keep growing that and how we can meet the needs of the industry,” he said.
“There are opportunities in the Great Lakes and in Thunder Bay as both a day stop and a turnaround port. We’re excited to be able to meet with some of our international counterparts and learn trade best practices, so they’ll keep pitching Thunder Bay as a destination for the expedition cruise ships.”
Pepe says they are continuing to build relationships and “lots of good things are happening” as we get ready for the summer.
Meanwhile, the dock work is in just the beginning of the process as Thunder Bay navigates through port design ideas that will welcome more international travellers.
“There’s a lot of logistics that’ll get figured out throughout the year in terms of what gets parked where and what has to go where alongside the ship when they’re changing luggage or they’re loading up the vessel with hotel and restaurant supplies,” he said. “From there, that’ll kind of help determine a longer term layout of how the property will look.”

Another cruise ship arrives in Thunder Bay this weekend
- Share by Email
THUNDER BAY — Two weeks after a visit from Viking Octantis , this weekend it will be Ocean Navigator's turn to bring hundreds of cruise ship passengers to see the sights in Thunder Bay.
The 202-passenger, five-deck vessel is scheduled to arrive at the Pool 6 dock at 11 a.m. Sunday.
Operated by American Queen Voyages, it has 101 suites and staterooms, two dining venues and two lounges, and carries a crew of 84.
Ocean Navigator is much different from Viking Octantis in that it was designed to look similar to the classic American steamboats of the late 19th century.
At about 310 feet, it's less than half the length of Octantis – the largest cruise ship on the Great Lakes – but city tourism manager Paul Pepe says it's actually not much smaller than the cruise ships that docked in Thunder Bay 10 and more years ago.
"It's a wonderful vessel with all upgraded interiors. I had the opportunity to board it in Toronto two years ago. It's coming here from Duluth and passengers will clear customs here at the port before the guests go ashore," Pepe said.
The visitors will have almost 12 hours to tour the area before Ocean Navigator leaves Thunder Bay late Sunday evening.
Pepe said guests will have a choice of three different motor coach excursions, but he expects some will choose to do walking tours.
"Our tourism staff will be down at the dock, helping those who want to explore on their own," he said, adding that those on the bus tour will likely see attractions such as Fort William Historical Park, Kakabeka Falls and Ouimet Canyon.
Since it's only making a day stop in the city, Ocean Navigator won't have the servicing requirements that Octantis did during its Friday-to-Sunday stay.
Pepe said "there are a lot of moving parts" with a turnaround stop and the logistics for handling passengers and servicing over two days, whereas with a day stop a vessel requires relatively minor servicing.
"Sometimes with a day stop, the vessel will pick up some local food to serve in its restaurant, and some other minor supplies. We anticipate it will be a fairly straightforward port call."
He added that learning how to accommodate the return of cruise ships, and working with two companies, is somewhat of an evolutionary process for everyone.
"We all work closely together with the companies to fine-tune the shore experience as we go throughout the summer, and maximize the opportunities for the community."
Ocean Navigator will make a second and final trip to Thunder Bay on June 26, but on that occasion it will have to dock at Keefer Terminal.
That's because Viking Octantis will be tied up at Pool 6 that weekend during the second of its seven scheduled visits this summer.

Changes coming to Santa Barbara Cruise Ship program
Changes to the Cruise Ship program in Santa Barbara will go before the City Council for review. Several changes were recommended, and approved, during a recent Harbor Commission meeting.
For almost two years, a harbor commission subcommittee has worked with community members, business owners, and environmentalists to understand their concerns related to cruise ships anchoring off Santa Barbara.
In 2022, after the pandemic, 30 ships visited the area. That number is higher than any other year in the program’s history, and raised alarms within the community about greenhouse gas emissions and impacts to the Santa Barbara Channel marine sanctuary.
"Our total annual cruise ship passengers, so looking back over the last decade, it ranges anywhere from 30,000 people a year to about 80,000 people a year visiting by cruise ship," Waterfront Director Mike Wiltshire said.
According to the south coast chamber of commerce, cruise ship tourism benefits the local economy by $3 to 5 million.
The subcommittee work group recommended several improvements to the program like placing a cap on the number of ships allowed to visit, as well as requirements for advanced wastewater treatment systems, and slower vessel speeds.
The Harbor Commission approved a list of changes that will go before the City Council in the coming weeks.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).
Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.
Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).
Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).
UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.
Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

Russia’s BN-800 refuelled with mox: full mox core planned for 2022
!{Model.Description}
The first full refuelling of Russia’s BN-800 fast reactor at unit 4 of the Beloyarsk NPP with only uranium-plutonium mixed oxide (mox) fuel was completed during the recent scheduled maintenance outage, fuel company TVEL (part of Rosatom) announced on 24 February. The unit, which was shut down on 8 January, has been reconnected to the grid and has resumed electricity production. The first 18 serial mox fuel assemblies were loaded into the reactor in January 2020, and another 160 fuel assemblies have now been added to them. Thus, the BN-800 core is now one-third filled with innovative fuel and in future only mox fuel will be loaded into the reactor.
“Beloyarsk NPP is now one step closer to implementation of the strategic direction for the development of the nuclear industry - the creation of a new technological platform based on a closed nuclear fuel cycle,” said Ivan Sidorov, Director of the Beloyarsk NPP. “The use of mox fuel will make it possible to involve in fuel manufacture the isotope of uranium that is not currently used. This will increase the fuel base of the nuclear power industry tenfold. In addition, the BN-800 reactor can reuse used nuclear fuel from other NPPs and minimise radioactive waste by “afterburning” long-lived isotopes from them. Taking into account the planned schedule, we will be able to switch to a core with a full load of mox fuel in 2022.”
The fuel assemblies were manufactured at the Mining and Chemical Combine (MCC, Zheleznogorsk, Krasnoyarsk Territory). Unlike enriched uranium, which is traditional for nuclear power, the raw materials for the production of mox fuel pellets are plutonium oxide produced in power reactors and depleted uranium oxide (obtained by defluorination of depleted uranium hexafluoride - DUHF, the secondary "tailings" of the enrichment plant.
“In parallel with loading the BN-800 core with mox fuel, Rosatom specialists are continuing to develop technologies for the production of such fuel at the MCC,” said Alexander Ugryumov, vice president for research, development and quality at TVEL. “In particular, the production of fresh fuel using high-background plutonium extracted from the irradiated fuel of VVER reactors has been mastered: all technological operations are fully automated and are performed without the presence of personnel in the immediate vicinity. The first 20 mox-FAs incorporating high-background plutonium have already been manufactured and passed acceptance tests, and they are planned to be loaded in 2022. Advanced technologies for recycling nuclear materials and refabrication of nuclear fuel in the future will make it possible to process irradiated fuel instead of storing it, as well as to reduce the amount of high-level waste generated.”
Serial production of mox fuel began at the end of 2018 at MCC. To achieve this, broad industry cooperation was organised under the coordination and scientific leadership of TVEL, which supplies the mox-fuel to Beloyarsk NPP. Initially, the BN-800 reactor was launched with a hybrid core, partly equipped with uranium fuel produced by Mashinostroitelny Zavod in Elektrostal (Moscow Region), and partly with experimental mox assemblies manufactured at the Research Institute of Atomic Reactors (NIIAR) in Dimitrovgrad, Ulyanovsk region).
