The rugged escarpments, the magnificent gorges and pristine waterways; you’ll be blown away at just how spectacular it all is.

Travelling through the Kimberley, it’s hard not to be captivated by its history. More recently, from the early explorers to pastoral pioneers, to the defence of our shores during WWII; they’re all fascinating feats of bravery, courage and endurance.

Whichever part of the Kimberley is calling, the adventure of a lifetime awaits with Outback Spirit.

So, if you want to get off the beaten track and experience the real Kimberley, an Outback Spirit Kimberley tour is for you.

Supporting Conservation

Outback Spirit is a proud financial supporter of Australian Wildlife Conservancy, Australia’s pre-eminent not-for-profit conservation group. With over 2.5 million acres across four sanctuaries, AWC is on the frontline of wildlife conservation in the Kimberley with ground-breaking research and on-ground management. Sadly, much of the Kimberley’s unique wildlife is under threat from extinction, and without groups like AWC the future for these precious species is very bleak. Since 2008, Outback Spirit has donated over $1 million to AWC, 90% of which is spent in the field, not on administration.

Itinerary & Accommodation Snapshot

Upon your arrival at Darwin airport*, you’ll be met by your friendly and professional touring crew. Your journey begins with an orientation tour of town, visiting Cullen Bay, Stokes Hill Wharf and the Darwin Military Museum. After, settle into your harbour view room at the DoubleTree by Hilton, located on the Esplanade. This evening we enjoy our first dinner together on the Charles Darwin with a delicious Territory-style sunset dinner cruise. (D) *Alternative pickup locations available.

Departing Darwin, our first stop this morning is Litchfield National Park, where waterfalls cascade off the Tabletop Ranges into tranquil waterholes.  Explore Florence & Wangi Falls and enjoy a picnic lunch before heading on to Kakadu National Park. Our base for the next two nights is Cooinda Lodge.  (B,L,D)

The day begins with breathtaking views over the Arnhem Land floodplains from Ubirr Rock, where you’ll also explore ancient rock art sites.  Then, ford the East Alligator River and venture into Arnhem Land for a visit to Injalak Arts and Crafts, Gunbalanya. Here, watch renowned artists create exquisite pieces right before your eyes. This afternoon we return to Cooinda and enjoy the renowned wildlife cruise on Yellow Water Billabong. You’ll be amazed at the diversity of this extraordinary wetland ecosystem and associated wildlife. We then return to the lodge for our final night in Kakadu.  (B,L,D)

Today we’re heading south to Katherine and on to Nitmiluk National Park, home to Katherine River Gorge. Carved through ancient sandstone by the Katherine River, this deep gorge with towering sheer rock walls is one of the best in the Territory. Enjoy a two-hour cruise in a canopied cruise boat before checking in to the luxurious Cicada Lodge.  (B,L,D)

Time to leave the Territory and cross into Western Australia. Pass through Victoria River and Timber Creek before heading in to Lake Argyle. We’ll stop off at the historic Durack Homestead along the way before a picnic lunch at the dam wall.  This afternoon we enjoy another river cruise, this time down the spectacular Ord River. Learn about the Ord River Irrigation Scheme from your knowledgeable skipper on this extraordinary 3-hour adventure downstream to Kununurra, arriving just as the sun seeks the horizon.

We then check in to the Kununurra Country Club Resort for our overnight stay.  (B,L,D)

This morning we enjoy a tour of Kununurra’s surrounding farming country. Drive through parts of the massive Ord River Irrigation Scheme on Ivanhoe Plains, where melons, mangoes, sandalwood and other crops are grown. You’ll also have some time to visit the shops before departing for the World Heritage Listed Purnululu National Park (the Bungle Bungles). Arriving late afternoon, we spend two nights at the Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge, owned by Outback Spirit in partnership with Aviair/HeliSpirit. The lodge features comfortable cabins with ensuite bathrooms.  (B,L,D)

Today we explore the wonders of Purnululu, including its unique orange and black beehive shaped domes. First up, enjoy a breathtaking 18-minute scenic helicopter flight over the park with a bird’s eye view of its astounding natural features. This flight is valued at $299 and is now included in the tour fare for 2019! Afterwards, enjoy a walk along Piccaninny Creek to the mind boggling natural amphitheatre of Cathedral Gorge. Then, follow the ‘dome trail’ for a closer inspection of the Park’s unique geological formations.

This afternoon we’ll head to the northern region of the Bungle Bungles to visit Echidna Chasm before returning to the lodge.  (B,L,D)

Please Note: If you’d prefer not to take the included scenic helicopter flight, you can remove it from your itinerary and will receive a $299 price reduction on the tour fare.

Today we head back out to the Great Northern Highway and then north to Wyndham and the sensational Five Rivers Lookout. Enjoy a picnic lunch and admire the views over Cambridge Gulf before back-tracking to the start of the infamous Gibb River Road. A short drive brings us to El Questro Wilderness Park, where we’ll spend the next two nights at Emma Gorge Resort in unique tented cabins.  (B,L,D)

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better way to start a day than a swim in the crystal clear 30°C water at Zebedee Thermal Springs! Spend a relaxing morning here before visiting the hub of El Questro - the station township. We then return to Emma Gorge for lunch, followed by an afternoon at your leisure. You can choose to relax in the surrounds of the resort, or take a guided walk up to the stunning Emma Gorge waterfall (2.5 hours return - a good level of fitness required, but well worth it). Either way, you are sure to appreciate some time to yourself in this magnificent Kimberley setting.  (B,L,D)

Today our journey along the Gibb gets a bit more serious. Cross the mighty Pentecost River and continue past Ellenbrae Station to the ‘Y” junction. From here we follow the Kalumburu Road past Drysdale River Station before turning onto the Mitchell Plateau track. Ford the King Edward River and drive through ancient Livistona Palm forests before arriving at our exclusive Ngauwudu Safari Camp, the most luxurious tented camp in the Kimberley. Featuring deluxe safari suites with ensuite bathrooms, quality furnishings and large balconies, the camp is a magical spot for the next two nights of our adventure and the ideal base from which to discover the Mitchell Plateau and Mitchell Falls.  (B,L,D)

Today we explore the incredible 4-tiered Mitchell Falls on a guided 4km walk, a true highlight of your adventure (Good level of fitness and mobility is required). Along the way we’ll discover rarely seen Gwion Gwion and Wandjina rock art galleries, accompanied by a local guide from Kandiwal Community.  The walk also takes us past Mertens Falls before arriving at the top of the breathtaking Mitchell Falls, one of the most awe-inspiring wonders of the Kimberley. After time to admire the thunderous falls we’ll take to the skies for a scenic helicopter flight, which returns us to the start of the walk. Viewing the falls from the air is a sensational experience.  This afternoon we return to the camp for a well-earned rest. You may like to enjoy a swim in the camp’s private palm-fringed swimming hole. (B,L,D) Note: If you do not wish to tackle the walk, there is the option to fly down by helicopter with an Outback Spirit escort (cost $160).

This morning we depart the Mitchell Plateau and head back to the Kalumburu Road. Along the way we’ll visit several exceptional rock art sites near the King Edward River. This afternoon we arrive at Drysdale River Station, which runs 9000 head of cattle across more than a million acres. We spend the night in top quality station cabins with private ensuite bathrooms.  (B,L,D)

After an early start we head back to the Gibb River Road and travel west past Mount Barnett to arrive at Bell Gorge, one of the most spectacular gorges in the Kimberley. Enjoy a guided walk down to the falls and a swim in the rock pools (good level of fitness and manoeuvrability required). Then, it’s on to Mornington Wildlife Sanctuary, deep in the heart of the Kimberley on the upper Fitzroy River. Once a dominant cattle station, this 800,000-acre sanctuary is owned and operated by Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) and is one of the largest non-government protected areas in Australia.  For the next two nights we stay in unique safari tents overlooking Annie Creek. Enjoy a few drinks around the campfire before dinner.  (B,L,D)

Combined with the neighbouring Marion Downs, Charnley River/Artesian Range and Tableland Sanctuaries, AWC owns and/or manages a staggering 2.6 million acres in the Kimberley, giving threatened species like the iconic Northern Quoll and Gouldian Finch a fighting chance for survival.

This morning, enjoy an informative ecology tour and discover why AWC is at the forefront of protecting threatened species in the Kimberley. Then, head off and explore the sanctuary in our specially built open back safari vehicles. Your guides will provide commentary on AWC’s conservation programs, all whilst travelling through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Kimberley. Visit Cadjeput waterhole on the upper Fitzroy River, where we’ll enjoy a swim and a picnic lunch. This afternoon we return to the wilderness camp where the remainder of the day can be spent at your leisure.

Tonight, enjoy an outdoor slide show highlighting how AWC are tackling some of the most significant ecological challenges in the Kimberley. (B,L,D)

This morning it’s back to the Gibb River Road before heading in to Windjana Gorge National Park. Teeming with wildlife, Windjana Gorge has been created by the Lennard River cutting its way through the limestone of the Napier Range. Enjoy a guided walk through the towering gorge which rises more than 100 metres above the floodplain. Next, we visit Tunnel Creek National Park for a fascinating underground river walk. This afternoon we arrive in Fitzroy Crossing for our overnight stay at the Fitzroy River Lodge. (B,L,D)

Nature and geology lovers will delight as we head into Geikie Gorge National Park for a 1-hour cruise on the Fitzroy River. Then, head to Derby for a quick town tour before continuing to Broome.  We arrive late afternoon and check in to the luxurious Cable Beach Club Resort and Spa for our two-night stay. (B,L,D)

Our journey is ending on a high with a sensational half day adventure to the Horizontal Falls. Described by Sir David Attenborough as ‘one of the greatest natural wonders of the world’, the falls are created when the 2nd largest tides in the world hurtle through two narrow coastal gorges.

First up, join us for a town tour of Broome or relax at the resort until you are collected for the start of your Horizontal Falls adventure!

Enjoy a 50-minute seaplane flight and land on the calm waters of Talbot Bay in the Buccaneer Archipelago. Then, board the fastest boat in the Kimberley, ‘Jet-Stream’ for an exhilarating ride through the Horizontal Falls. You’ll be awestruck at the power of the Kimberley tides as your expert skipper gives you an experience you’ll never forget. We’ll also cruise some of the surrounding bays and creeks and have a bite to eat on a commercial houseboat before returning to Broome.

Tonight, we gather for our final dinner together and celebrate our adventure through the Kimberley. Meals: B.L.D

Note: Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures have a weight restriction of 120kg.

Enjoy breakfast and a leisurely morning at Cable Beach Club. We’ll then make sure you’re transferred to wherever you need to go. Bon Voyage! (B)

Spirit Safaris

Kimberley Tours

Kimberley Tours Broome to Broome and Broome to Darwin 4WD tours or reverse . Small group luxury 4WD camping tours or private charter tour in the Australian Outback to remote nature, Wandjina and Gion Gion (Bradshaw) rock art sites.

Cockburn Range from Gibb River Rd at Pentecost River Kimberley tour

The Kimberley region is in the north of Western Australia, extending from Broome in the west to Kununurra and Lake Argyle in the east, from the sea to slightly south of the main Great Northern Highway.

The Kimberley has two distinct seasons, the dry and the wet . During the dry, which runs from May until October, the weather is warm and comfortable. The wet, which runs from November until April, is characterised by heavy and short downpours in the afternoon or early evening which provide a refreshing change after a hot day.

The best way to see the beautiful Kimberley is on a private, small-group luxury 4WD accommodated or camping tour or private charter tour. Fully accommodated or camping – it’s your choice. Our seven or eight day Kimberley Top End Traverse tours travel between Broome and Darwin or Broome and Kununurra (both directions) and are uniquely able to show you the real, magnificent Kimberley, much of which was formed 350 million years ago.

The Kimberley is one of Australia’s last frontiers and one of the world’s last great wilderness areas. It’s certainly big. There are over 400,000 square metres of land to explore, making the region a sixth of Western Australia, or the size of California!

With a population of only 30,000, the Kimberley region is truly a rare and unique area – a last frontier of world.

With only one sealed road through the entire region it’s definitely uncluttered by tourists, but still very much open and accessible to adventure lovers, particularly when you have our experienced, Kimberley loving tour guides to see you through.

Highlights of our Kimberley tours include the beautiful pearling town of Broome and the world-famous Cable Beach with its turquoise waters, and the remote Gibb River Rd can give you a feel for the Aboriginal and pastoral history of the Kimberley, and take you to spectacular inland river gorges that were formed over millions of years by the forces of nature, such as the Manning and Galvans gorges. Use a rope to swing into a rockpool, let a waterfall massage your back, or just relax in the peace and quiet.

The tiger-striped, sandstone domes of the Bungle Bungles are wonderful to see by air, but getting closer to them by 4WD is a completely different experience – we do both. We visit the Kimberley towns of Katherine and Kununurra; the cattle station and wilderness resort of El Questro; Zebedee Hot Springs; the Drysdale River Homestead; the stunning Mitchell Falls with its spectacular rock art; and one of Australia’s largest non-government protected areas, and a hotspot for birdwatchers, Mornington Wilderness Sanctuary, operated by Australian Wildlife Conservancy .

Kimberley Rock Paintings wandjina

And a visit to the Kimberley wouldn’t be complete without discovering the rich Aboriginal history of the Great North West and actually meeting some of its indigenous inhabitants. We visit with Aboriginal artists and elders and see Wandjina and Bradshaw rock art sites. The elegant and sophisticated paintings known as the Bradshaws, or Gwion Gwion, are claimed to be the world’s oldest figurative paintings.

Listed below are all the individual tours we have available for the spectacular Kimberley region.

13 unforgettable things to do in the Kimberley

Leah McLennan

Travel Journalist

14 September 2023

Time

The Kimberley rivals all destinations for the title of most unforgettable experiences in one place; start working through our list of truly memorable things to do in the Kimberly now.

The Kimberley is incredibly vast and diverse ; sprawling over 422,000 square kilometres, it is roughly three times the size of England. From a walk with an Aboriginal guide through the Bungle Bungles’ dramatic sandstone karsts to marvelling at the turquoise tidal waters of the mighty Horizontal Falls , the Kimberley serves up sights that will stay with you forever.

1. Bungle Bungle Range in Purnululu National Park

Despite having existed for around 350 million years, the orange and black striped domes of the Bungle Bungles in World Heritage-listed Purnululu National Park were only ‘discovered’ by the wider world in the 1980s when a film crew captured them for a documentary about Western Australia . Now one of the major attractions in the Kimberleys, the Bungle Bungles can be seen by air from Kununurra  or – if time permits – hit the road and walk among the sculptured rocks.

2. Horizontal Falls

Just when you think the Kimberley can’t get any more surprising, you find yourself in a seaplane on the way to the Horizontal Falls. It’s one of the many tours you can book to experience the Horizontal Falls.

an aerial view of Horizontal Falls, Talbot Bay

Horizontal Falls is a sight to behold. (Image: Tourism Western Australia)

In Talbot Bay in the remote Buccaneer Archipelago, massive tidal movements of up to 10 metres creates a waterfall effect as millions of litres of water rips and foams through two gaps in the coastal range. It’s a wondrous sight: turquoise blue water rushing between rugged red hills.

Want to stay longer than just a day? Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures  now offers a 24-hour overnight stay aboard the 10-room Jetwave Pearl , moored in Talbot Bay. It includes seaplane transfers, a helicopter flight, powerboat rides, fishing, swimming in a marine enclosure to view sharks.

3. Camel rides on the beach

No visit to Broome is complete without exploring the 22-kilometre stretch of Cable Beach that boasts some of Australia’s whitest sand. Rent a paddle board and glide over the aquarium-like water or simply dive in between the red and yellow flags. But better still, make a beeline for the Cable Beach section known as ‘north of the rocks’ and take a dreamy sunrise or sunset camel ride.

4. Cruise the Kimberley coastline

Taking a voyage along the eye-popping Kimberley coastline is a true once-in-a-lifetime experience. Departing from Broome (to either Wyndham, Darwin or your embarkation point), a Kimberley cruise takes ocean lovers through the Horizontal Falls and into mirrored bays where the rocks shelter ancient Aboriginal art, and along rugged gorges where ospreys look out from crags and crocodiles bask, open-jawed, in the tropical sun.

Seafaring journeys range from four-night adventures to 21-day odysseys – find the right Kimberley cruise for you in our guide to the best.

5. Kimberley tours

When it comes to an extraordinary adventure in the Kimberley, you won’t have to hunt for something to do. Instead, you will be rejigging your itinerary, trying to squeeze in as many extraordinary experiences as possible. And the best way to do it? Join as many of the best Kimberley tours as possible.

Expect to choose your own adventure: take a seaplane to the Horizontal Falls; grab a 4WD and immerse yourself in the ancient landscapes; learn about Indigenous culture on a walking tour; search for humpback whales on a cruise out of Broome.

6. Drive the Gibb River Road

Tackling this 660-kilometre rugged dirt track between Kununurra and Derby is the ultimate outback drive through the heart of the Kimberley. You will be covered in a thick layer of crimson dust, hot, craving fresh fruit and vegetables, and sunburnt, but then you come across wonders from freshwater swimming holes to ancient Aboriginal paintings, wedge-tailed eagles to fiery sunsets and splendid stars. Is it any wonder that the Gibb River Road  sits in the same travel trophy cabinet as the Canning Stock route, the Birdsville Track and other great Aussie tracks?

7. Lake Argyle

Near Kununurra, the vast Lake Argyle  is the biggest human-made lake in the southern hemisphere. Part of the Ord River Irrigation Scheme, it is about 18 times the size of Sydney Harbour.

Jump on a cruise of the 55-kilometre stretch of the Ord River between Lake Argyle and Kununurra and you’ll get a glimpse into a wondrous aquatic world. Keep the camera handy as you’ll likely spot a myriad of bird species, flying foxes and freshwater crocodiles.

While in the area, don’t miss a visit to the Argyle Homestead Museum . Built in 1895, this was the home of the Durack family and serves as a time capsule of colonial life in East Kimberley.

8. El Questro Homestead

El Questro Station on the Gibb River Road , 110 kilometres from Kununurra, is synonymous with just about every Kimberley adventurer’s bucket list.

A vast cattle station turned tourism venture, the property is peppered with boabs believed to be up to 5000 years old, rivers brimming with barramundi and thermal pools so perfectly shaded with palms you’d think a landscaper had been at work.

But where to sleep? If you’re lucky, you’ll snooze at the exclusive El Questro Homestead.  Other sleeping options include camping, a pre-erected tent with air con or hotel-style bungalow alongside the river.

9. Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm

Broome is famed as an old pearling village but heading north for 200 kilometres and exploring a pearl farm in the outback is where the real adventure lies.

On the tip of the Dampier Peninsula, Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm  is a working farm that also provides unique tours and accommodation, ranging from safari tents to the fancy Master Pearlers Private Retreat.

The 100-metre waterfalls of King George Falls are one of the Kimberley’s most wonderous sights. Think twin falls with water as white as wedding veils plunging into two emerald pools, which are surrounded by rust-red rocks.

King George Falls is nothing short of spectacular. (Image: Tourism Australia)

Due to its remote location, a cruise from Broome to the King George River or a scenic flight over the north Kimberley coast are the only ways to access King George Falls. April and May are the best months to visit, when the falls are thundering after heavy rain.

11. Ord Valley Muster

What better way to experience an outback town than by getting involved in its annual festival? Each May, Kununurra comes alive for the Ord River Muster . During this fun-packed fortnight boasting more than 30 events, you can watch rough riders at a rodeo, try yoga on a boat, dine under the stars and boogie to a dozen or so live bands, such as Birds of Tokyo, Toni Childs and King Stingray.

12. Staircase to the Moon

Come nightfall in Broome and one of the best free shows is the Staircase to the Moon , when the glow of a full moon on the mudflats creates the illusion of a giant’s staircase reaching skywards. Travellers and locals flock to witness the spectacle at Town Beach, were night markets boast live music and stalls dishing up Asian street food. Want to watch this natural phenomenon in style? The Mangrove Resort  is a comfy spot to admire the Staircase to the Moon, which occurs from March through to November.

13. Hoochery Distillery

In the 1990s when the sugar industry was booming in the area, the late American farmer Raymond ‘Spike’ Dessert III built a small pot distillery on his Kununurra seed farm. Now producing over 50,000 bottles of Ord River Rum a year, the Hoochery Distillery  has won numerous awards.

Spike’s Reserve 15-year-old sells for $349 a bottle, making it one of Australia’s priciest rums. But there are plenty more entry-level varieties to purchase at this charming rusted old shed. And don’t go home without sampling a slice of the famous Ord River Rum Cake.

This 12-day tour traverses the Kimberley Ranges

  • envelope-solid

There are natural highlights galore in the Kimberley Ranges, but just getting through them on a 12-day, bus tour with Outback Spirit can be the biggest thrill of all.

Accessing the Kimberley Ranges

As we shake, rattle and roll through the Kimberley, I am ever grateful I am wearing a sports bra… and that I am not in my own car. We are on the infamously rough Gibb River Road that runs east to west through the heart of these ancient ranges. There are dips and potholes bigger than my backyard pond and boulders that wouldn’t look out of place in the landscaping. Despite my comfortable chair, I’m being tossed sideways, and my teeth rattle from corrugations, but I can’t wipe the smile off my face.

Exploring Western Australia’s Kimberley Ranges is on many bucket lists but often not ticked off. Why? Because buying the right equipment to access the heartland can cost a fortune. Inaccessible is an understatement when it comes to touring the Kimberley region. You need to know what you’re doing to get through unscathed. Replacing tyres, shock absorbers, snapped bolts, bent chassis and smashed windscreens are regular mishaps. And we even meet a traveller whose caravan has fallen apart on the inside after driving these roads.

A kimberley tour

Outback Spirit’s Kimberley Tours

I have found the perfect alternative – a bus tour with Outback Spirit . It’s not your average bus or tour – it’s a 12-day, five-star expedition through Australia’s most inaccessible country, crossing 2,967 kilometres (with detours) from Darwin to Broome in an all-terrain vehicle that’s strong enough to take on almost anything the outback can dish up, but luxurious enough to do it in style.

The jewels of the Kimberley – hotspots such as Mitchell Falls, Horizontal Falls, El Questro, Purnululu, Cathedral, Geikie, Emma and Windjana Gorges – are our destinations. But getting to them proves to be just as big a thrill.

marie kimberley tours

Starting at the Top (End)

Our Kimberley tour adventure starts with a flight from Darwin to Mitchell Plateau. The Top End coastline is stunning with rivers snaking from terracotta-coloured beaches into swathes of mangroves. The bus meets us at the tin shed ‘arrivals lounge’ for a transfer to Ngauwudu, Outback Spirit’s resort on land leased from the Kandiwal Aboriginal community. Permanent glamping tents on raised decks blend in with the open eucalypt bush. Inside are sumptuous queen beds and stylish furniture, even bedside lamps and a fridge.

Horizontal Falls at Talbot Bay

There is no doing it tough out here. A huge dining room and outdoor deck overlook the barbecue and firepit. Sticking to stone paths, we’re told, offers the best chance of avoiding unwanted guests like snakes – a stark reminder that we’re in the outback. (Note: I briefly met a snake while swimming in the creek. It slid in and I immediately walked on water out.)

Mitchell Falls is a bumpy 45-minute drive from the resort along dirt roads once used for bauxite strip mining, followed by a 4.5-kilometre hike to the river for a swim and views over the falls. A chopper ride – with doors removed – gives a heart-pumping bird’s-eye view on the way out.

How to ‘do the Gibb’

When you’re told it will take two hours to drive 26 kilometres, you know you’re in for a rough ride. Think of those mechanical bucking bulls and you’re on track. Not that anyone is complaining. The bus seats are cushy, mandatory seatbelts stop us from being thrown about too much and a video screen with a camera link to the road ahead means we can see what’s coming – including wild cattle that often roam across roads.

Morning tea by King Edward River is a welcome break, while a tour of Wandjina rock art offers a glimpse into one of the oldest forms of communication in one of the world’s most ancient lands. For my 15 travelling companions, the hard yards end at Drysdale Station, from where they will fly to Kununurra. I’m staying on the bus with our intrepid guide, Justin Rechichi, however, to ‘do the Gibb’ – that’s nomad speak for the legendary Gibb River Road. It’s a 450-kilometre, potentially bone-crushing commitment made slightly easier for us by recent road grading.

The Bungle Bungle Range

Rechichi has been crossing the country for more than 20 years, learning about its people, history, geology, wildlife and vegetation, and passing that on with a running commentary. But even with this wealth of experience, it ‘only’ takes us four hours to drive the first 240 kilometres. Over rivers and dry creek beds we bounce, passing the odd rusting car wreck and a few of the Kimberley’s 99 cattle stations. Mt Elizabeth, Drysdale, Ellenbrae, Home Valley and El Questro are now familiar names. It feels like we’re in a mobile tumble drier, but hydraulic seats up front take the brunt of bumps. There’s little wildlife to see. Only a dingo braves the 35-degree heat and belting sun.

marie kimberley tours

The unique landscapes of the Kimberley Ranges

The landscape constantly changes – one minute it’s a sea of spinifex and spindly gums; the next, a green valley where water gathers. A parade of comical boab trees reminds us we’re in north-west Western Australia. It’s the only place they grow. The colours are muted – pale greens and faded browns with a good coating of dust. But vivid yellow kapok trees and crimson Kimberley roses brighten the scene. Then the rich oranges and blacks of the Cockburn Ranges stand out like beacons on the horizon, leading our way to Kununurra. We’re nearly there. When I’m not giggling like a schoolgirl, I’m still beaming.

The Kimberley Ranges is rich in minerals, history and natural beauty and is marked by extremes in colour, weather, culture and geology. How lucky to experience all this ruggedness without any hardships… and in someone else’s vehicle!

marie kimberley tours

Your tour begins in Broome early this morning. You will be collected from your pre-tour central accommodation and set off on a journey up the spectacular Dampier Peninsula.

The Dampier Peninsula is a delight for all travellers. A striking contrast of stunning red pindan cliffs, white-sand beaches and clear turquoise waters creates the perfect backdrop to a unique cultural adventure along this far northern coast. Along the way, learn about the local Bardi and Nyul Nyul Peoples and their traditions. Upon arrival at your luxurious accommodation, take a quick dip or beachcomb the pristine sand of Cygnet Bay. After a satisfying lunch, immerse yourself in the practice of pearl cultivation at Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm – long described as one of the most unique destinations in Australia. During this fascinating tour, learn about the world’s largest and most beautiful pearls, which have been farmed in these waters for generations.

This afternoon, take to the shimmering turquoise waters on a sunset cruise along the jaw-dropping Buccaneer Archipelago. The evening is yours to recline in the comfort of your glamping stay.

After breakfast, travel to the remote Aboriginal community of Ardyaloon, also known as One Arm Point, where you’ll enjoy stunning views across the coastline. Head north on Highway One, bound for the small outback town of Derby. Arrive this afternoon and venture down to the unique wharf district to hear about the history of the early pioneers, watching as the sun sets over dramatic King Sound.

Leave Derby early this morning and make your way to the Boab Prison Tree, believed to be 1,500 years old.

Here, learn of the harsh treatment endured by the local Indigenous Peoples during colonisation. Take time in the shade to reflect on this solemn history.

Afterwards, begin your journey along Gibb River Road, taking the cattle track through remote and beautiful landscapes while hearing stories of colonial settlement. Arrive at the Napier Range, an exhumed Devonian reef over 350 million years old, and set out on an easy walk to the geological wonder of Bandilgnan. Be sure to keep an eye out for the incredible concentration of freshwater crocodiles that live here, as well as bats and other wildlife.

After a bite to eat, head to Dimalurru – also known as Tunnel Creek – a 750-metre cave system, in which you’ll find magical secret caves and stalactites. Learn the legend of Jandamarra, an Indigenous Australian freedom fighter who used the tunnel as a hideout in the late 1800s. Walk through this winding tunnel, then continue through the Oscar Range. As the sun sets, pass through groves of majestic boab trees before arriving at your accommodation for the evening on the banks of the Fitzroy River.

Early this morning, travel to Danggu Geikie Gorge National Park and explore the magnificent gorge and river system by boat. Natural forces helped carve this spectacular gorge during the Devonian geological period. Though the water retreats during the dry season, enough remains to sustain the wide variety of Kimberley wildlife that you may spy on this scenic cruise. Afterwards, head to the gold rush town of Halls Creek before voyaging to Purnululu National Park by way of the 4WD Spring Creek Track. Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon and end the day with an enchanting open-air dinner.

A full day has been set aside for you to explore the extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage-protected Purnululu National Park, starting with a guided two-kilometre creek walk on your way to Cathedral Gorge. This winding route is set deep within the Bungle Bungle Range, offering unparalleled views of the unique orange and black-striped 'beehive' domes, formed over a period of 20 million years. Arriving at the natural red rock amphitheatre, test the caverns renowned acoustics as you stand in the shadow of this gargantuan rock formation, created by millions of years of water erosion.

This afternoon, you'll have the option to experience spectacular aerial views of the Bungle Bungle Range and admire the hidden and inaccessible valleys of Purnululu National Park on a once-in-a-lifetime scenic helicopter flight.

Afterwards, savour drinks and light snacks as you admire a sensational sunset.

Optional activities:

  • Helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungle Range – 18 minutes (from A$351 per person).
  • Helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungle Range – 30 minutes (from A$527 per person).
  • Helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungle Range – 42 minutes (from A$647 per person).

This morning, set out on a two-kilometre hike to Echidna Chasm in the parks northernmost reaches. A natural cleft in the rock that reaches a staggering 200 metres in height, Echidna Chasm narrows to a mere one metre in width along its winding path. Learn about Aboriginal Dreamtime, which lends the chasm its name, while walking up the creek for views over the imposing cliff edge. For those who wish to extend their walk, continue through the aptly-named bloodwoods that surround the foot of the mountains.

After a picnic lunch, share stories of your travels before taking a scenic flight over Lake Argyle. Touch down in the charming East Kimberley town of Kununurra, where your Western Australian adventure comes to a close as you’re transferred to your post-tour accommodation.

Kimberley 2024 Small-Group Tour with Kununurra Flight, Pearl Farm Stay & Buccaneer Archipelago Sunset Cruise route map

Of Australia’s innumerable natural wonders, the Bungle Bungle Range may be one of its most striking oddities. Forming over 20 million years ago, these beehive-shaped domes exhibit mesmerising black and orange striation due to the gradual weathering of the sandstone by the forces of water and wind. Spread over 450 square kilometres, the cliffs and canyons of this sacred site are breathtaking in their own right, but the rock’s signature colours have a fascinating story all their own. While the rust-coloured layers owe their hue to iron-oxide coating the sandstone, the darker layers are indicative of countless single-cell microbes living on the rock surface.

Witness the delicate majesty of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed landscape on a guided Purnululu walk, with the option to take to the skies for a bird’s-eye-view of the hypnotic structures.

As we travel through the remote and beautiful Kimberley landscape, our guide shares stories of local history, people and the environment. Enjoy a morning tea break by the Fitzroy River and visit the Derby ‘Boab Prison Tree’ before we hit the Gibb River Road. Visit the fascinating Mowanjum Aboriginal Art & Cultural Centre for an insight into the culture of the Worrorra, Ngarinyin and Wunumbal tribes and their supreme spirit being, the Wandjina. The afternoon is devoted to exploring Tunnel Creek, with our local Bunuba guide. In this 750-metre cave system carved through the Napier Range, we discover stalactites, secret caves and a large variety of wildlife. It is here we also learn the legend of Jandamarra, an Aboriginal freedom fighter who used the tunnel as a hide-out in the late 1800’s. Don’t miss a refreshing swim in an idyllic waterhole. That night we settle into our first night under the Kimberley night sky. (LD)

The Napier Range is over 350 million years old and home to the geological wonder of Windjana Gorge. Beneath gorge walls rising 90m, we spend the morning searching for freshwater crocodiles, local birdlife and indigenous bush tucker. Mid morning we head off to Dalmanyi (Bell Gorge), a hidden highlight of the West Kimberley. This idyllic retreat, considered amongst the most beautiful in the area, boasts cascading waterfalls and crystal clear pools formed over millions of years – an easy place to while away a few hours! Spend the next day swimming in paradise: discover the cool waters of water lily-laden Galvans Gorge and stunning Adcock Gorge. Amid the rugged beauty of Manning Falls we swim in deep clear pools, relax, explore wandering streams, uncover local wildlife and take a dip in the waterfall pools. Overnight we camp by a billabong on Mt Barnett Cattle Station. (BLD/BLD)

marie kimberley tours

Our journey up the Gibb River Road continues to the iconic El Questro Wilderness Park. Two nights in our private campsite allows free time to join one or more of the many activities on offer. We include a refreshing dip in the Zebedee Springs and walk into Emma Gorge while a cruise on Chamberlain Gorge, bush tucker walk or bird watching tour are amongst the many optional activities. You may choose to simply explore this beautiful wilderness park at your own leisure. (BLD/BL)

Days 6-7 Kununurra & Lake Argyle

Emerge from the Gibb River Road for a few hours free time in Kununurra: sample locally-made rum at the Hoochery and pick up some local sandalwood inspired beauty, health and lifestyle products at the Sandalwood Factory. After lunch, travel on to the shores of the expansive Lake Argyle, the heart of the Ord River Irrigation System which has transformed this dry region into a lush agricultural oasis. Two nights allows time to enjoy a refreshing afternoon swim in the Infinity Pool, with a magnificent view across the lake, and take up one of the many optional activities on offer such as scenic flights and kayak hire. You may like to join our guide to visit the historic Durack Homestead Museum or take on one of the many bush trails to explore the area. A sunset boat cruise on the lake is highly recommended (approx AU$100pp, own expense). (BD/BL)

Journey south down the Great Northern Highway to Purnululu National Park, home of the magnificent Bungle Bungles. Two nights here, staying in our private Bungle Bungle Safari Camp in the heart of the park, allows a full day to explore the highlights of this extraordinary National Park, the most famous of which, are the Bungle Bungle domes. Rivers created this landscape of unique orange and black striped ‘beehive’ geological formations over a period of 20 million years. Unbelievably, only the locals knew it existed until the early 1980’s; once discovered by others, the area was made a national park in 1987. We explore Echidna Chasm (2km), known for its towering Livistonia Palm trees, and take a short walk (2-3km) into stunning Cathedral Gorge, where towering rocks create a natural amphitheatre. There is time in the afternoon to take an optional scenic helicopter flight and enjoy a birds-eye view of the beehive domes (approx $450pp, own expense) to put it all into perspective. (BLD/BLD)

marie kimberley tours

Enroute to Fitzroy Crossing, we break the long journey with a visit the gold rush town of Halls Creek to see the remarkable China Wall. We also enjoy lunch at Marys Pool and visit an Aboriginal Art Gallery, before an evening by the Fitzroy River at Fitzroy Crossing. (BLD)

marie kimberley tours

A morning cruise through the majestic Danggu (Geikie Gorge) is a great start to the day. Nature carved this wonder through the Geikie and Oscar Ranges during the Devonian geological period. Learn of the fascinating geology of this natural wonder and discover the huge array of wildlife including freshwater crocodiles, birds and fish. Enjoy lunch by the river en route back to Broome. (BL)

Where is the Kimberley region?

The Kimberley is the northernmost region of Western Australia with the Pilbara region to the south and the Northern Territory to the east. It's one of the most remote and sparsely populated places in Australia, with 38,000 residents living in an area covering 163,514 mi2.

How do I get to the Kimberley?

Most of our Kimberley trips begin in Broome – the largest town in the region.

The quickest and most convenient way to get to Broome is to fly. There are direct flights to Broome International Airport from  Singapore , Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane in the dry season from May to September with Virgin Australia and Qantas and flights to/from Perth and Darwin all year round.

You can also fly into Kununurra Airport (also known as East Kimberley Regional Airport) if you plan on traveling east to west.

A slower, perhaps more immersive, way to travel to the Kimberley is to drive. The Gibb River Road – a 410-mile road that runs through the heart of the Kimberley outback – is the gateway to most of the region’s national parks and sites. You can access Gibb River Road from Kununurra/Wyndham in the east or Derby in the west.

If you’re road-tripping, it’s super important to plan and prepare as this is a remote region with few amenities. You will also need to ensure your vehicle is suitable for the trip, which means having a 4WD as many roads are unsealed and you may get bogged, depending on the weather.

What animals live in the Kimberley?

Nature rules in the Kimberley, and although the human population is low, the region is brimming with furry, scaled and feathery residents.

The rivers, gorges, creeks and rocky terrain are a haven for wildlife and some of the native animals you might see on your trip include salt and freshwater crocodiles, goannas, lizards, snakes, dingoes, rock wallabies, bilbies and echidnas.

Do you need a 4WD in the Kimberley?

Yes, if you're self-driving you will need a 4WD.

A 2WD just won’t cut it for a Kimberley road trip – not if you want to do it safely and properly – as the weather and road conditions are unpredictable and many sections of the roads running through the region are unsealed.

When is the best time to visit the Kimberley?

Unlike other parts of   Australia , the Kimberley experiences just two seasons: a wet season from November to April and a dry season from May to October.

The Kimberley is a popular winter escape for Australians living in the country's cooler parts. The busiest period is May to August when daytime highs average a balmy 82°F, there's plenty of sunshine and the chance of rain is slim. These conditions are prime for exploring and hiking in the national parks.

Traveling to the Kimberley in the wet season isn't off the cards. In fact, it can be an amazing time to see the gorges, waterfalls and rivers in their full glory. It's also a great time to spot wildlife along the luscious river banks.

January and February are the wettest months, but the rain often falls heavily in short bursts with intermittent dry spells. That said, the wet season in the Kimberley is unpredictable. Land tours may not run as sections of the road can get cut off when the rivers and creeks swell.

The tail end of the wet season can be a great time to visit as the heavy rains taper off, there's still plenty of water feeding the waterfalls, and it's not too busy.

What is cell phone reception and internet access like in the Kimberley?

You can use your phone and access cell data in towns throughout the Kimberley, but there is limited or no access to phone reception and internet once you hit the road.

Not that you'll notice anyway – you'll be far too engrossed in your spectacular surroundings to think twice about your devices and social media.

What to wear in the Kimberley

A trip to the Kimberley is jam-packed with adventurous activities like hiking in gorges and swimming in waterfall-fed swimming holes, so you’ll need to bring your swimming gear and comfy active wear.

Shorts, vests, T-shirts, and long, loose-fitting layers (ideally made of cotton or linen) to stay cool and protect your skin from the sun.

You will also need a warm sweater for cooler evenings, a pair of walking shoes or runners, a pair of thongs and sun protective gear (wide-brimmed sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen).

Who are the Traditional Owners of the Kimberley?

The Traditional Custodians of the Kimberley comprise over 30 First Nations groups. They have lived on these lands for tens of thousands of years and are deeply connected to Country.

Culture is rich, and ancient knowledge continues to be passed down through the generations.

There's much to learn from the Traditional Custodians of the Kimberley – and all other First Nations peoples – whether it's learning about traditional bush foods, medicine and ecology, or listening to stories by the campfire.

These are some of the Traditional Owners in the Kimberley region.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

From here we continue onto Pine Creek where we stop for a quick break before travelling to Nitmiluk for a jaw dropping Gorge Cruise . Be transported to the spiritual world of the Jawoyn culture and history as we witness the magnificent gorge backdrop from our boat. Taking us to the end of the first gorge, experience the beauty of large boulders, rock pools and sands that make up the crossover to the second gorge as well as a 3 course dinner. Kununurra – Emma Gorge   (B,L,D) Enjoy breakfast this morning before we explore further north and head to Wyndham . This small frontier town, typifies the character of the Kimberley. Established near the tidal waters of the Cambridge Gulf, the port town is guarded by the thrusting summit of the Bastion Range. Many people say the “ Five Rivers Lookout ” from the top of the Bastion is one of the finest lookouts in Australia! We learn about the history of the area when we visit Wyndham Museum . Located in the old Court House, the museum provides an insight into the aviation, shipping, pastoral and meat processing industries of past pioneers. Journal records, photographic displays of time gone by and unique memorabilia amalgamate to form a truly fascinating experience. Make sure you have your camera ready as we drive to our lunch venue. The birdlife will take your breath away as we enjoy lunch at Parry Creek Farm . The farm is located at the Parry Lagoons Nature Reserve, an important water bird feeding and breeding area. It is also a stopover point for more migratory waders, some of which travel from as far afield as Siberia. We continue to El Questro Station , a million-acre cattle station and Wilderness Park, our home for the next two nights. There will be time to freshen up and relax before we come together for dinner.

Accommodation: Emma Gorge Resort (tented cabins) or similar (2 Nights)

Returning to our accommodation, freshen up before we meet for this evening’s dinner.

Emma Gorge – Halls Creek  (B,D) Today we travel to Halls Creek , on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert. The town is full of stories and relics as it was the site of Western Australia’s first gold rush. One of the more famous stories is of Russian Jack, a man who carried his injured mate in a wheelbarrow for over 300 kilometres to get medical attention. A statue is dedicated to his amazing feat here in town. Just outside of Halls Creek is the China Wall . The amazing natural white stone formations rise high out of the ground and then disappear back into the earth again, making it look like a miniature Great Wall of China. We arrive at our accommodation, check in and meet this evening for dinner.

Accommodation: Fitzroy River Lodge or similar (1 Night)

Fitzroy Crossing – Broome   (B,D) Once we’ve had breakfast and checked out, our destination today is Broome. First we detour to visit the Boab Prison Tree , one of the most unconventional lockups you’ll ever come across, capable of holding a number of prisoners. In the early days it was used as an overnight prison before their final trek into Derby. Here we can also have our photo taken in front of the water trough that locals claim to be the biggest in the southern hemisphere! We continue our last leg of the journey into Broome , surrounded by white sandy beaches and clear blue waters. Upon arrival we’ll check in, freshen up and then meet our guide and walk to a local restaurant for dinner.

Accommodation: Oaks Broome or similar (3 Nights)

Next we view the largest Japanese Cemetery in Australia, hear of Town Beach’s diverse history and take in the breathtaking views before visiting Broome’s WWII Commemorative Air Raid Artwork . Chinatown has been the heart and soul of Pearling since the 1880’s. We spend time here where will have some free time in which to purchase lunch (at own expense) before our next venture. It is often said that Broome’s pearling industry is as rich in culture as it is in pearls. We discover the impact pearling has had upon Northern Australia and how the melting pot of cultures were enticed by the lure of the pearl . Pearl Luggers is located in the heart of Broome’s Chinatown and will take us through the modernising of the industry, introduce the ‘perfectly imperfect’ Keshi pearl and give meaning to the saying ‘Broome was built on Buttons’! We return to the hotel with time to relax and freshen up before we come together again for dinner in the hotel.
