Best Safari Destinations in Africa for 2024

The Big Five have never been more appealing. Here are our big five safari destinations Africa for 2024 and beyond

hike africa tours and safari

“There is something about safari life that makes you forget all your sorrows and feel as if you had drunk half a bottle of champagne—bubbling over with heartfelt gratitude for being alive.” Karen Blixon, of Out of Africa fame, waxed rhapsodic about the wonders of the mighty continent and the appeal of a safari. Most of us have only seen wild elephants and lions in documentaries, but there’s nothing more thrilling than seeing these mighty beasts in their natural habitat. An elephant calf playfully following the herd, an ochre-hued lion gazing intently at wildebeests, a giraffe slowly chewing the branches from an acacia tree. Witnessing these animals on a safari in Africa truly transforms you and your views on conservation and sustainability.

Africa boasts dozens of countries, each with their own cultures, languages and norms, but across this dynamic continent, from north to south, lie wilderness parks, savannahs and velds where the Big Five—lions, elephants, cape buffalos, rhinos and leopards—and other animals live peacefully under the watchful eye of park rangers and conservationists. Check out our top five best safari destinations in Africa for 2024.

Botswana boasts so many natural wonders, it’s hard to pick a place to start when heading here for a safari adventure. The Okavango River Delta, the largest inland delta in the world, offers miles upon miles of myriad waterways, lagoons and grassy flood plains where one can admire mighty beasts from a safe vantage point in an overland truck. Get as close as you can get to African elephants as well as lions and leopards on a Botswana safari .

The Moremi Game Reserve, situated in the heart of the delta, is the perfect campsite for any driving safari as you’ll be rewarded with hippos, Cape buffalos, lions, leopards and the ever elusive Tawny Eagle. If you love elephants as much as we do, Chobe National Park on the border of Botswana and Zambia, boasts a herd population of around 50,000 elephants across the savannah. A Botswana safari is the perfect choice if you want to splurge on a private African safari tour as you get personal chefs and other amenities.

Kenya offers tantalizing glimpses of wildlife from any budget or luxury African safari tour. With more than 800 safari tours to choose from, travelers will find it hard to pick just one. Head to the Masai Mara for gaming drives that ensure you see at least one or two of the Big Five. Tsavo West National Park goes beyond the Big Five and offers rhinos, hippos, cheetahs and plant and bird species that you can’t find anywhere else. This rugged wilderness boasts verdant plains thanks to watering holes such as Mzima Springs.

Mt. Kilimanjaro is the resident icon here and with its snow-capped peaks as a backdrop, you’ll find elephants migrating from one watering hole to another at Amboseli National Park. Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake, is a great vantage point to admire birds as well as hippos among papyrus reeds and flat-topped acacias. After six days of trekking and hiking, relax in your air-conditioned hotel in Nairobi when you’re done.

South Africa

hike africa tours and safari

When one thinks of the Big Five, South Africa immediately comes to mind as it’s considered the place to see all of these animals in their natural habitat. A safari in South Africa means you’ll be guaranteed lions, leopards, rhinos, and other wildlife across a five- to eight-day African safari.

From the verdant banks of Lake Saint Lucia in iSimangaliso Wetland Park to the grassy plains of Kruger National Park, South Africa teems with wildlife that is indigenous to the continent. Blyde River Canyon, the third largest of its kind in the world, boasts gorges and greenery like you’ve never seen anywhere else on earth. Expect views of the rivers and valleys laid out like a banquet feast for the senses. Meandering ribbons of blue traverse the landscape and waterfalls are carved into cliff sides, offering a pleasing respite from long days in an overland truck tour.

For African safari tours, Tanzania is always at the top when one thinks of best safari destinations in Africa. With sites such as Ngorongoro Crater, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tarangire National Park, and Serengeti National Park it isn’t not hard to see why. A Tanzania safari is a one-of-a-kind experience thanks to the Great Migration. This annual event sees more than 2 million animals, mainly wildebeests, zebras and giraffes, traverse the golden plains of Serengeti National Park, from Tanzania to nearby Kenya. A safari in Tanzania is always appealing thanks to conservation efforts that preserve the Big Five and other wildlife as well as fertile soil and abundant watering holes.

On any given Tanzania safari, expect iconic wildlife while on a game drive and close-but-not-too close interactions with animals (perfect for anyone looking for an African safari photography tour); it’s one of our favorites because of this personal interaction. Descend into Ngorongoro crater where you might be lucky enough to spot an endangered black rhino or visit a Maasai village to learn about their way of life.

hike africa tours and safari

While most people head on an African safari to see the Big Five, there are other animals just as majestic and endangered as the mighty lion. Uganda boasts gorilla safaris so you can do your best Jane Goddall impression watching primates in their native habitat.

Before you get to the primates, travel to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to admire rare white rhinos, which have been saved from the brink of extinction by park rangers here. Track chimpanzees, our closest animal relatives, in Kibale Forest National Park. Then it’s time to hike 4-6 hours to see mountain gorillas.

In Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park you’ll get to spend one hour admiring these majestic beats in the dense foliage. Grab your camera and quietly take photos of these sociable creatures who are often in family groups of more than a dozen, led by an alpha male. These mighty animals can look placid but can be quite intimidating when viewed up close so don’t use your video camera or flash. You’ll leave your Uganda gorilla safari with a new appreciation for primates of all sizes.

Take a walk on the wild side on an African safari.

The word “safari” means “journey” in Swahili. And a safari in Africa is all about the journey. While seeing a leopard munch on a freshly caught gazelle or spying a curious lion cub venture away from its mother’s protective embrace will be highlights of your trip, you’ll discover the journey is as much a part of your trip as the destination.

The road-trip games you play with your new travel mates, the feeling of the wind (and maybe a little dust) in your hair when you’re travelling down long, winding roads, and the young Maasai boy who waved at you as you passed him along the road will stay with you long after you return.

The only thing more magical than witnessing the great wildebeest migration across the Serengeti? Seeing it from the sky in a hot air balloon. As the herds of wildebeest and thousands of other animals travel from Serengeti National Park to the greener pastures of the Masai Mara National Reserve, you can watch their journey and enjoy incredible views from a unique perspective.

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta has a unique system of waterways that are home to an immense array of wildlife. The best way to explore it is in a mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe. Where we stay on safari.

Camping in Africa

On our safari trips you’ll stay in billion-star accommodation. That’s our way of saying you’re sleeping under the night sky, camping in the great outdoors. On our Basix and sections of Original trips, you’ll stay in two-person canvas tents that our crew will help you set up. And on our Comfort trips, you’ll be staying in permanent tented camps and lodges (think glamping instead of camping).

Campsite facilities can sometimes be basic, but wherever possible, we make sure there are Western-style toilets and warm water available. But you’ll find it’s worth sacrificing a warm shower or two when you’re waking up to sunrise over the Masai Mara.

How we get around

Africa overland truck

On our safari trips, your main mode of transport is an overland truck, a purpose-built vehicle made for driving through Africa’s winding, and sometimes bumpy, country roads. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The trucks are also equipped with power outlets to charge your camera, phone and other devices on the go.

For more info on our overland trucks, see our Africa overland page .

African Safari FAQs

When is the best time to go on safari.

Generally speaking, January, February and June to October are the best times to go on safari in Africa. This is the dry season, so animals tend to come out into more open spaces in search of water, making them easier to spot. However, you’ll be able to spot animals all year round and you’ll enjoy fewer crowds if you travel outside peak season.

Read more about the best time to go on safari .

Where is the best place to go on safari?

The best place to go on safari depends on what kind of animals you’d like to see and what other activities you’d like to do in destination. We offer safaris to some of the best safari destinations in eastern and southern Africa, like Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and more.

Read more about how to choose your ideal African safari .

Am I guaranteed to see animals on safari?

While we can’t guarantee you’ll spot the Big 5, you’d have to be profoundly unlucky to see no animals at all. On our trips, you’ll explore some of the best game parks and national reserves in the world. These protected areas are filled with a huge variety of different species and your expert driver and local leader will help you spot animals.

What are the “Big 5”?

The “Big 5” used to refer to the five big game animals that were the most difficult to hunt. Now that most shooting is done on a camera, the Big 5 are the most exciting animals to spot while on safari: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

What should I pack for safari?

Loose, light clothing in neutral colours is the best attire for a safari (dark colours will get hot in the sun and can attract the Tsetse fly). You’ll also want a sun hat, some good walking shoes, a camera, sunscreen and bug spray. For more details, check out our ultimate Africa packing guide .

What type of food will be served on safari?

On our Basix trips you’ll have a cook travelling with you while you are on safari who will whip up a variety of local flavours and Western-style dishes. Along your route, your cook will stop to purchase fresh, locally sourced food for your meals. You can expect a variety of things for breakfast like fruit, eggs, toast and cereal; lunch is often sandwiches and salads; and dinner is usually a hearty meal like pasta, curry or a BBQ.

On our Original and Comfort trips there will be more meals at camps and lodges along the way. No matter what you’re craving, you definitely will not be going hungry on safari.

What are the toilets and showers like on safari?

Most of the permanent tented camps will have a private bathroom with flushing toilets and showers with warm water.

Many of the campsites we stay at have communal facilities with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. However, in some of the more remote areas, there may only be basic facilities (toilets and cold running water).

Can you accommodate accessibility requirements on your safari tours?

We are committed to making travel accessible to everyone, so we will work with you to assess whether you will be able to complete an existing itinerary, or whether we will be able to make reasonable adjustments to meet your needs before you book. Please see our accessible travel page for more information.

What is internet and phone access like on safari?

Some of our hotels and campsites will have Wi-Fi, however Internet and phone access may be limited in more remote areas. But you won’t miss it when you’re watching a pride of lions prowl through long grass or enjoying a drink around the campfire with your group.

Responsible travel

Our stance on Animal Welfare

This world and the animals that call it home are precious, and we believe it’s our responsibility to help preserve them. We do not include or condone any activities that exploit animals on our safari trips, including hunting, feeding or interacting with animals in any way. We believe that wild animals should be observed in the wild, from a respectful distance.

Some tips for being a wildlife-friendly traveller include never buying animal products, not participating in activities that include contact with the animals, and not including location tags on social media posts (some poachers have gone high-tech and use social media to track rare animals’ locations).

Read more about our Animal Welfare Policy here .

Mount Kilimanjaro view

Hiking in Africa - the treks you will love!

Posted by Harriet Purser on June 03 2020 in Adventure Travel in Africa Enquire Now!

During lockdown in South Africa, I've been stuck at home in Cape Town. Like so many others across the globe, I've been unable to escape outdoors. Since I cannot go on my regular hikes, I've been thinking back to the places I have been lucky enough to walk in the past. Reminiscing about all the interesting hikes, climbs and treks, I've done over the years, across the African continent.

Here are some of the most memorable hikes and treks I've done in Africa, from the tallest mountain on the continent to the southern tip of South Africa.

Hiking on Africa Overland Tours

I did some of my earliest multi-day hikes in Africa while on overland safaris. On one, I hiked up Mount Nyiragongo in the Republic of Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Since I visited, this active volcano has erupted and changed topography several times.

Nyiragongo volcano

Mount Mulanje in Malawi is another amazing hike I did on one of my first overland Africa trips.

Mount Mulanje scenery

On many Overland Africa Tours you have the chance to climb mountains and do shorter hikes along the way. Ask your tour company or travel agent about the hiking options on various overland tours before you book. There are plenty of game parks where you can do walking safaris these days and numerous tours offering all kinds of walks, hikes and treks as part of your adventure. Chat to one of our travel experts for guidance.

Climbing Kilimanjaro in Tanzania

Let’s start at the top - Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. This is the highest mountain in Africa, known as The Roof of Africa. At 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) Mount Kilimanjaro is on many travel bucket lists.

Mt Kilimanjaro climb

There are several routes to the summit of this free-standing mountain. I have summited Kilimanjaro via two different routes, Marangu and Machame. I hiked in group sizes from 2 to 75 on this iconic dormant volcano. You can choose to camp in tents or stay in huts on different routes.

Kilimanjaro Marangu route huts

The 5 to 8-day hike up Mt Kilimanjaro requires no climbing skills or specialist equipment. Yet you do need to pack for a wide variety of weather conditions. The only reason I pushed myself to the summit a second time was that we had no views the first time due to the clouds. The second time we summited, we had rain and snow all the way up. Luckily, the summit day was clear with spectacular views!

Kilimanjaro summit

For the best trek, climb Kilimanjaro with well worn-in hiking gear and a reasonable level of fitness. A willingness to follow your guides' advice will also go a long way. To maximize safety, authorities only allow a limited number of registered companies to operate hikes. These companies are strictly regulated to keep hikers, guides, porters and cooks safe. They provide the guides, porters, cooks and camping equipment for your trek.

Kilimanjaro Machame route

Top Tip: Keep one pair of socks and gloves separate and dry for the very long summit day. Clothing that gets wet earlier in the hike doesn’t dry out at altitude.

Climbing Mount Meru in Tanzania

Before my first hike on Kilimanjaro, I acclimatized by hiking to the summit of neighbouring Mt Meru, the fifth-highest peak in Africa. Mount Meru is located near Kilimanjaro in the Arusha National Park of Tanzania and is 4,562 meters (14,968 feet) tall.

Mt Meru Kilimanjaro view

This is a shorter hike than Kilimanjaro (at 4 days) and you are accompanied by an armed game ranger due to the presence of wildlife on the lower mountain slopes. There are huts for the overnight accommodation on the hike.

Mt Meru huts

This isn’t a technical climb but there are far more exposed ridges than on Kilimanjaro. On Mount Meru, the park ranger has the discretion to cancel the summit attempt for safety reasons in the event of thick fog, rain or if there is too much ice. As on Kilimanjaro, the summit walk starts in the early hours of the morning so that you can walk upon the volcanic ash whilst it is still frozen.

Mt Meru trek view

Top Tip: Take extra new head torch batteries and keep them warm inside your jacket for use a few hours into the summit attempt. Batteries fade quickly at altitude although they’ll work again normally when you are down at lower altitudes.

Hoerikwaggo Table Mountain Hike in Cape Town, South Africa

Being based in Cape Town, South Africa , I've done plenty of hiking trails in and around the beautiful mother city. This includes the multi-day hike on iconic Table Mountain.

Hoerikwaggo Hiking Trail, Cape Town

When the Hoerikwaggo Trail in Table Mountain National Park first opened I hiked a section of this stunning trail. The full Trail spans five days with four different overnight huts between the Wash Houses in Cape Town and Cape Point Lighthouse.

Cape point lighthouse

After a night in the comfortable Wash House accommodation, we set off in brilliant sunshine stopping regularly to apply extra sun cream. By the time we were on top of Table Mountain at Maclear’s Beacon (1,086 meters, 3,563 feet) we needed wet weather gear and warm hats. Despite many beautiful photographs and views of Table Mountain with its famous flat top, this hike was the first (but not last) time I discovered that the top of the mountain is made up of a series of ridges and valleys (and especially in bad weather these can seem never-ending).

Table Mountain view

We did eventually reach Klipspringer cottage where the fire had been lit and we were fed a tasty and warming dinner. The following morning we explored around the Woodhead and Hely-Hutchinson dams and the Waterworks Museum (which contains a steam train that was manhandled to the top of the mountain to help build the dam walls). Then we left the thick fog behind, descending into a hot and sunny Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens .

Kirstenbosch Gardens

Top Tip: Even relatively close to sea level a hike can expose you, without warning, to a wide range of weather conditions. Plan the contents of your backpack accordingly so you're prepared.

Hiking the Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa

In the Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa there are also a wide variety of hikes from a few hours to multi-day expeditions. The Drakensberg is the highest mountain range in South Africa. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the arguably the best hiking destination in South Africa.

Drakensberg hiking south africa

On my most recent hiking trip, I walked up the Tugela Gorge in the Royal Natal National Park. Then, on the following day, I hiked on the other side of the Amphitheatre.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Virunga, Central Africa

My first gorilla trekking excursion involved an overnight hike in Virunga National Park starting at the Bukima research station.

Mountain gorilla in Central Africa

Group size is restricted and no-one with any symptoms of a cold can visit the gorillas to avoid infecting them. Walking all morning on the second day the guides regularly pointed out various signs showing that gorillas had been in the same area recently but we began to feel we might never see an actual gorilla. It took several hours and on finding a group the rules are strict and no-one can stay more than an hour.

That hour of watching a family group of mountain gorillas interact with each other remains one of the highlights of my African travels.

Mountain gorilla in Virunga mountains

Top Tip: long sleeves and trousers are recommended; despite the heat and humidity there are a lot of nettles amongst the vegetation and the forest paths are narrow.

Hiking in Ranomafana Forest, Madagascar

Another hot and humid forest walk can be enjoyed at Ranomafana in Madagascar . Here the mammals that might be seen are lemurs; the park was created after the discovery in the area of golden bamboo lemurs but there are 11 other species of lemur found in the national park.

Ranomafana lemur Madagascar

Only the very luckiest visitors will see a rare aye-aye. In fact, throughout Madagascar, there are no game drives but only walks through a wide variety of eco-systems to look for extraordinary wildlife. Ranomafana (meaning hot water) National Park is made up of a series of steep forested hills with streams running through which is why the only way to explore is on foot.

Top Tip: Pretty much everywhere you eat in Madagascar there will be a dish of chilli paste on the table. Approach with caution! The heat factor varies from hot to volcanic.

The Ultimate Packing List for Your African Safari

hike africa tours and safari

Packing for an African safari is somewhat different to most other trips you'll take. Navigating rural roads in an open-top jeep means that you'll get covered in dust, so you'll need clothes that hide dirt well. Because temperatures can change dramatically throughout the day, layers are essential (after all, pre-dawn game drives are often chilly even in the height of summer). If your itinerary includes flights in a bush plane between different parks or camps, you'll need to pack extra light to comply with charter flight baggage restrictions.

In this article, we provide a comprehensive packing list that should cover most 7-10 day safaris (while still leaving room in your suitcase for a few curios ).

Dressing for Your Safari

Safaris are generally casual affairs, so you can leave your evening-wear at home. The best clothes are loose-fitting and lightweight, so that they keep you cool and dry quickly if you get caught in a rain shower. Make sure to bring at least one good fleece or jacket for warding off the chill on early morning game drives. At night, there will usually be a campfire to keep you warm, but you'll want to wear long sleeves and trousers to protect yourself from mosquitoes . This is particularly important in malarial areas.

When it comes to colors, pick neutral tones over brighter shades for optimum camouflage in the bush. Khaki is a safari favorite for a reason: it's cool, camouflaged and hides dirt well. If you're in tsetse fly country, avoid wearing blue – it's an attractant for the disease-carrying insects.

Clothes and Accessories

 • 2 long-sleeve shirts
 • 1 sweatshirt or fleece
 • 1 lightweight raincoat
 • 1 pair of comfortable shorts
 • 2 pairs of cotton trousers/pants
 • 3 pairs of socks
 • 4 pairs of underwear (cotton, so that you can easily wash and dry them overnight)
 • 1 pair of sunglasses (preferably with UV protection)
 • 1 warm woollen hat
 • 1 swimsuit
 • 1 pair of lightweight, durable walking shoes or hiking boots
 • 1 pair of flip-flops or sandals (for wearing around camp)
 • A supply of Ziploc bags to keep your dirty laundry separate from your clean clothes

Top Tip: Ladies, on the bumpy roads of Africa, a decent sports bra is your best friend.

Toiletries and First Aid

Every camp or lodge will have at least a basic first aid kit , and most safari vehicles will too (especially those operated by higher-end camps). However, it's always a good idea to bring your own small supply of hygiene and health essentials.

 • Personal toiletries, including travel size shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, moisturizer, toothpaste and toothbrush
 • Sunscreen (minimum SPF 30+)
 • After-sun cream
 • Antiseptic gel (for washing your hands when there's no water around)
 • Sanitary products for ladies
 • Contraceptives (including a supply of the pill, if you're on it)
 • Mosquito repellant (the most effective includes DEET)
 • Malaria pills (if needed)
 • Antihistamines for bug bites and allergic reactions
 • Painkillers, e.g. aspirin or Tylenol
 • Cold and flu medicines
 • Diarrhea medication, e.g. loperamide
 • Antiseptic cream
 • Prescription medicines
 • A spare pair of glasses for those that wear contact lenses (it's often too dusty to wear them comfortably)

Electronic Devices

 • Camera (this can be a basic point-and-shoot or an SLR with detachable lenses and a tripod, depending on how serious a photographer you are)
 • Spare memory cards
 • Spare camera battery (consider a solar charger if you're going to be camping)
 • Binoculars (if you have them, otherwise your safari guide will likely have a pair you can borrow)
 • Spare AA and AAA batteries
 • Electrical adaptor
 • Small flashlight (to use inside your tent or to find your way around camp at night)
 • iPad or tablet for storing e-books, photos and handy travel apps

Pack For a Purpose

Many safari camps and lodges now support local community initiatives in and around the wildlife parks, reserves and concession areas. If you want to make a positive difference during your time away, ask if you can bring any supplies that will help these projects (usually school supplies, medication or clothing). Check out Pack For a Purpose for lists of specific requests from lodges around Africa as well as suggestions on how best to pack the items they need.

Before you start packing, make sure to research your options carefully. If there are two parts to your trip, you may be able to pack a separate duffel or backpack for the safari section and leave your main suitcase with your tour operator or hotel back at base. This keeps things light for your bush flight to Ngorongoro Crater , for example, while still allowing you to pack your scuba gear for your second week on the beach in Zanzibar .

You should also try to find out ahead of time whether your safari camp or lodge offers a laundry service. If not, you can recycle clothes by packing a small bottle of travel detergent and a length of thin nylon rope to serve as a makeshift laundry line.

When choosing your suitcase, a soft-sided duffel is almost always a better bet than a rigid hardshell case. Duffels are easier to fit into narrow overhead compartments or into the back of a safari vehicle – and they're more likely to withstand the wear and tear of life in the bush. Because poverty and corruption lead to theft at many third world airports , we recommend plastic wrapping your bags before your flights and investing in a decent luggage lock. Always pack your valuables (and especially your camera with all your precious memories) in your hand luggage.

#1 Botswana

Recommended Tours:

Thus, poachers are seen as enemies of the people. As a result, Botswana has come into view as Africa's most sought-after ecotourism destination. Starting from the Chobe National Park to the Moremi Nature Reserve, you'll be able to witness numerous gems all around the country.

Back in 2014, Botswana widely banned the hunting of wild animals and implemented strict laws which are still in practice. The country resumes its zero-tolerance for poaching and their very own environmental minister, Tshekedi Khama, has even launched a shoot-to-kill policy for poachers.

Botswana, with its wildlife conservation and natural parks, is a haven for nature lovers. It is currently in the top 5, as its approach to the protection and conservation of wildlife is worth the praise. As a country, it is very forward-thinking, some may even call it aggressively forward-thinking when it comes to its preservation and anti-poaching laws.

Recommended Tours:

Its fertile land provides a safe and comforting home to around 200 mammal species. This includes elephants, hippos, monkeys and so much more. Along with 650 bird species and 5,500 plants. Even though the country is still underdeveloped and most of the population live in rural households, its national parks, and sight-seeing destinations are on the top 10 of our lists.

Even though many would face some difficulties in locating Malawi on a map, given how tiny it is, the country is home to the world-renowned Lake Malawi National Park. Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.

When it comes to countries with the least amount of population, Namibia is one of them. Which proves to be a good thing for nature. This is because most of the land in Namibia is still unspoiled by human filth or any sort of development, giving nature a chance to breathe.

hike africa tours and safari

In the country's Volcanoes National Park, you'll find 10 habituated gorilla families. Groups of 8 trekkers can visit them for one hour per day. But that's enough to get the best African safari experience. And as a nature lover, you'll enjoy the experience to the max.

If you've been around for some time, you'll be familiar with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. They were famously broadcasted and their fight for survival was shown on National Geographic . This was all thanks to the late Dian Fossey back in the 1970s who advocated for the rights of these mountain gorillas throughout her life.

Considering the tragic history surrounding the mass genocide of the people of Rwanda back in 1994, it's truly a blessing what the country has achieved in the past 25 years. There have been countless investments in infrastructure. This has resulted in the country being a very fast-growing destination for ecotourism.

hike africa tours and safari

#6 South Africa

But given all the advantages, it's safe to conclude that South Africa also suffers from over-tourism. I mean, if you have so many great attractions, people will flock towards it. Chances are that you'll find yourself in the middle of dozens of unruly visitors who are not too keen on obeying the rules. This occurs mostly during the peak seasons.

Annually, the country has one million visitors. Its biggest attraction is the Kruger National Park with its enrichment in biodiversity. Visitors there also have the liberty to self-drive, thus, getting a first-person private but superb experience.

For some time now, South Africa has been climbing the charts to become one of the most popular destinations for African safaris. Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. Besides that, the country also boasts a well-developed infrastructure which makes it perfect for luxury travelers as well.

#7 Tanzania

One of the most popular locations would be the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The country is also a haven for 1100 different bird species. It's no wonder that Tanzania gets this much rep. Especially when the country boasts so many wonders.

We talked about Kenya being the top destination for Safari. Now Tanzania here takes second place in being the continent's most popular safari destination. And why shouldn't it? The country has 16 national parks and an extraordinary amount of wealth and wildlife wonders for the people to witness.

hike africa tours and safari

Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.

Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.

Recommended Tours:

Out of its 20 national parks, the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is home to many wildlife animals such as African elephants, Angolan giraffes, Cape buffalo, etc. Other than that, there are many private ownerships of National parks, notably the Kasanka National Park which is near the basin of Lake Bangweulu. It's a safe place where visitors can see 400 different avian species.

Zambia may be a bit far down the list of popular destinations for your African safari, but many consider it to be a destination for diversified and immersive safari experiences, and making a notable feature on our 10 Best African Countries for Safari guide. The country is steadily focusing on conservation as their president has shown a keen interest and is working on building the nation's economy as well as the infrastructure.
