kool and the gang 2020 tour

Summer of 1964 — that’s when I met Ronald Khalis Bell

Right from the start I loved his thinking, his ideas, his mind was so active . Just being with Khalis you didn’t need a motivational speaker; he was motivational enough for everyone.

One of his favorite affirmations was “stay the course” . There is so much truth in that. That is the law of attraction and believing in God and oneself you manifest. He understood that at an early age. Ronald was very spiritual and very devoted to his way of life. This also became the vibration and energy and spirit of Kool & The Gang

Khalis was very complexed Man but that’s to be expected when you’re functioning on that level. He was a creative genius and often times I would tell him “you are a genius, Man”. I loved Ronald dearly he was and is my brother . Rest Khalis, you honored all of us here on this earth with your gift. It’s not goodbye, it’s until…

- George Brown

Khalis has been my brother, friend, comrade & musical partner since grade school

It’s difficult to put into words how much he will be missed . For him it was always about love, peace, harmony and music . May he be remembered for all the beautiful music and positive vibrations he released into our world and universe. Love and Peace eternal…

- Dennis Thomas

May the peace and blessings of Allah be with my dear brother Khalis who recently passed

From Youngstown, Ohio to Jersey City, From The Jazziacs to The Soultowne Band and from The New Dimensions to Kool & the Gang, Khalis was at the head of it all. Khalis was a great musician , a great producer and he will always be remembered with love by me, his brother, and the rest of the world.

Robert “Kool” Bell and George “Funky” Brown of Kool & The Gang

Kool & The Gang is set to celebrate 60 years as R&B and funk veterans in 2024. However, ahead of that monumental feat, the group is releasing a new album and will be embarking on an international tour .

People Just Wanna Have Fun is slated for release on July 14, towards the end of their 17-city tour.

Jess Hilarious Suggests Nicki Minaj Invited Katt Williams On Tour Due To Low Ticket Sales

George “Funky” Brown, fellow founding member and producer of the LP, added insight on the process during the height of the pandemic . “It’s all done live. Nothing was flown in. We made sure we had the ultraviolet lights and the sprays and the masks. Nobody got sick. We kept the number of people in the studio way down,” stated the 74-year-old.

The album’s lead single, “Let’s Party,” debuted back in October, but an Afrobeats remix is premiering on April 21. Both Bell and Brown view this project—the group’s 34th album—as a “summation of their long career” as it will be some of the last work from the band’s members, Ronald “Khalis” Bell and Dennis “D.T.” Thomas, who passed in 2020 and 2021 respectively.

Since their start in 1964, the group has garnered two GRAMMYs, seven American Music Awards, a BET Soul Train Lifetime Achievement Award , and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Plus, Kool’s bass guitar is featured in the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC and their 1980 hit, “Celebration” was inducted into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2021 along with Janet Jackson’s Control , Labelle’s “ Lady Marmalade ,” and Nas’ Illmatic .

Robert 'Kool' Bell shares Kool & the Gang's big new plans after decades of success

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Kool & the Gang's Robert "Kool" Bell is celebrating his R&B, funk and soul band's 60th anniversary this year.

During an interview with Fox News Digital, the 73-year-old musician, who is embarking on the 2025 Ultimate Disco Cruise with Kool & the Gang next February, marveled at how the group continues to tour and create new music after six decades.

"It's been a blessing this year as we celebrated 60 years [since] our first record came out," Bell said.

"The band started as a jazz band in 1964. And, of course, The Soul Town Band, Kool & the Flames.

KOOL & THE GANG DRUMMER GEORGE BROWN DEAD AT 74

"We are also the most sampled band in hip hop — 50 years of hip hop," Bell added. "So, that kind of makes us the most sampled band in the music industry because most of all the sampling came from hip hop. It's a blessing. So, we're out now celebrating 60 years in the business."

Kool & the Gang was founded by Bell, his brother Ronald Bell and their New Jersey high school friends Ricky Westfield, George Brown, Spike Mickens, Dennis Thomas and Charles Smith, all of whom comprised the band's original lineup. The group started as a jazz and soul band called the Jazziacs but later went through several name changes, including The Soul Town Band and Kool & the Flames.

"Going backwards — Soul Town Band — there was an organization in Jersey City called the Soul Town Review, and we became a part of the Small Town Review. And we became The Soul Town Band," Bell recalled. "Now, we would have to learn Motown songs because the various artists locally would be singing stuff from Motown and also a little bit of James Brown , and etc, etc.

"So, that's how we moved on after that to Kool & The Flames. And Kool & the Flames, we had another problem. Because you had James Brown and his Famous Flames. So, although we played a lot of James Brown's songs when we were Soul Town, we didn't want to have any problem with The Godfather.

"So, we said, 'Well, hey, what can we call it though? So we came up with another manager as well, Gene Redd, who came up with Kool & the Gang. And we came out with our first record in 1969 as Kool & the Gang."

After settling on the moniker Kool & The Gang, the band landed a recording deal with Redd's independent label De-Lite Records and released their self-titled debut album in 1970.

Kool & the Gang first found commercial success in 1973 with their fourth album, "Wild and Peaceful," which featured the hit songs "Jungle Boogie" and "Hollywood Swinging."

However, the band rose to global stardom after James "J.T." Taylor joined Kool & the Gang as lead singer in 1979.  During Taylor's nine years with Kool & the Gang, the band released their four highest-selling albums, including 1979’s "Ladies’ Night," 1980’s "Celebrate!," 1981’s "Something Special" and 1984’s "Emergency."

The albums featured a number of hit songs, including "Ladies' Night," "Celebration," "Get Down on It," "Cherish," "Joanna," "Misled," "Fresh," "Summer Madness" and "Too Hot."

Kool & the Gang has released 25 studio albums to date, with their latest being 2021's "Perfect Union." The band has won two Grammy Awards and has sold over 70 million albums worldwide. Kool & the Gang's music has been sampled over 1,950 times, according to WhoSampled.

Artists who have sampled the band's song catalog include Madonna, DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, Ice Cube, 2Pac, Nas, Q-Tip, A Tribe Called Quest and Miles Davis, among many others.

In 2014, Kool & the Gang hit the road for their 50th anniversary tour, and the band continues to perform nationally and internationally.

Kool & the Gang is currently on tour with concerts scheduled through October in both the U.S. and Europe. In addition, Bell told Fox News Digital the group is looking forward to headlining next year's Ultimate Disco Cruise. The five-day cruise on the Norwegian Pearl will depart Miami, Florida, on Feb. 19 with stops in Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico, before returning to Miami Feb. 24.

Bell said Kool & the Gang was previously included in other lineups for the Ultimate Disco Cruise, which takes place annually.

"We've done quite a few. The last one we did was with Royal Caribbean, the Celebrity ship, and now Norwegian has taken over the Disco Cruise, and we have our champagne. We have a champagne called Le Kool champagne, and it's with Norwegian Ships," he said. "We're looking forward to February of next year."

Bell launched his champagne brand, Le Kool, in 2020 and announced in June it would be available on Norwegian Cruise lines.

During his interview with Fox News Digital, Bell teased what fans can expect from the 2025 Ultimate Disco Cruise.

"Well, if they come to party, that's what we do. If they come to celebrate, that's what we do. If they want to get down on it and especially the ladies, that's what we do," he said with a smile. "And we're going to have Le Kool champagne. That's what they drink."

Bell also recalled some of his favorite memories from his 60 years with Kool & the Gang. The musician reflected on the thrill of performing with some of the industry's top stars over the decades.

WATCH: Kool & the Gang's Robert 'Kool' Bell says touring with Kid Rock was ‘great:' ‘He wanted to do 10 more’

"The latter part of the ‘70s going into the ’80s, we played with Elton John at Wembley Stadium over in London," Bell said. "We did a tour during that time, and we had The Gap Band on the tour. And we had Larry Graham. Well, so there were a lot of different special occasions during that time.

"I'm going to tell you another one that happened after that," he continued. "We did 48 shows with Van Halen. We did ten shows with Kid Rock. We played with Dave Matthews Band. We played with Dire Straits.

"And then we would go around playing with Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder."

Kool & the Gang was the opening act for Van Halen's 2012 reunion tour with frontman David Lee Roth. Roth invited Kool & the Gang to join the tour after enjoying the band's performance at the 2011 Glastonbury Festival.

In 2013, Kool & the Gang joined the first leg of Kid Rock's Rebel Soul Tour.

"That was great show," Bell recalled. "We did ten shows with Kid Rock, and he wanted to do ten more."

Bell recalled a conversation he had with Kid Rock in which the rapper revealed he had sampled one of Kool & the Gang's songs earlier in his career.

"He said, ‘When I was coming up at the time, getting into the hip-hop world, I sampled your song ’Love and Understanding.' I said, 'I didn't know that. You did?' He said, ‘Yeah, man.’

"Yeah, and he has a little DJ in his set. And, my son, Prince Hakeem, he's a DJ. And [Kid Rock] would say, ‘Look man, you need to keep rapping on ’Jungle Boogie.' Yeah, ‘Celebration’s' OK, but there is a rap on ‘Jungle Boogie.' And my son has been doing that ever since. My son comes out with me sometimes."

Though he has collaborated with many musical icons, Bell admitted performing with one legendary artist left him "starstruck."

"The shows we did with James Brown. I mean, we had played his music in the clubs back in the '60s. But to be [playing] several shows with James Brown, it was great," he said.

"People would say, ‘Well, Kool & the Gang have the No. 1 horn section. And James Brown would say, ’No, they No. 2. I'm No. 1. I bring the funk to the party,'" Bell said with a laugh. "But he was good."

Bell added that the late funk legend also shared his advice for navigating the business side of the music industry.

"The one thing about James Brown, he would come to us, came to me and say, ‘Kool, listen, are you controlling your publishing? Are you controlling your writing?'" Bell recalled. "’You need to be on top of that.' So he was a good educator as well."

Last November, George Brown, one of the founding members of Kool & the Gang, died at the age of 74 after a battle with cancer. Brown was the band's drummer and also wrote some of Kool & the Gang's biggest hits, including "Celebration," "Ladies Night," "Too Hot," "Jungle Boogie" and "Get Down on It."

Bell, now the band's last surviving founding member, shared his thoughts on how he wanted Brown to be remembered.

"George Brown was definitely a great writer, and he dealt with some songs that was a part of his life. And one of the big records he had was ‘Too Hot,’"Bell said. "That was a great song.

"'Ladies Night' was also George Brown. I came up with the title, but George came up with the song along with J.T. and my brother.

"He came up with the bass line," Bell continued. "He said that we had just left a meeting in New York, and he was watching people in New York walk and, you know, as in walk, ‘dong dong dong dong dong’ — walking in New York. That's how he came up with the idea of the bass line. He was a great guy, man, a great writer, producer."

Looking back on the band's legacy, Bell shared his excitement over how Kool & the Gang's biggest hit songs like "Celebration" have stood the test of time and were featured in some of the world's most historic moments.

"It makes me feel great because, you know, you're talking about a song that came out in 1980 and is still popular today," he said. "You're talking about a song that, in the space station, when the astronauts got up in space, they played ‘Celebration.’ So, they like ‘Celebration.’ And so many other accolades for ‘Celebration.’

"When President Biden was nominated for the presidency, they played ‘Celebration.’ When he won, they played ‘Celebration,'" he said. "Just a great song. Can we write another ‘Celebration?' No. We tried to. We came up with the song ‘Let’s Have a Good Time.' Didn't quite work.

"'Celebration' is ‘Celebration.'"

Rady Shell 2024 summer season will include Audra McDonald, John Legend, Los Lobos, Jewel, Big Boi

The Rady Shell's summer season includes Audra McDonald, Jason Mraz, Harry Connick, Jr. and John Legend.

This year’s lineup also features Rock Hall of Famers Roger Daltrey and The Beach Boys, and 2024 Rock Hall nominees Peter Frampton and Kool & The Gang. The roster also ranges from Gary Clark, Jr. and Marc Shaiman to Trombone Shorty and a joint concert by Ziggy Marley and the San Diego Symphony.

The San Diego Symphony’s $85 million Rady Shell at Jacobs Park has earned international acclaim and featured an array of music legends and rising talents since opening in 2021.

But with nearly 20 artists set to make their Shell debuts this season — including Audra McDonald, Harry Connick, Jr., Los Lobos, Sister Sledge, The Avett Brothers and rising classical violinist Geneva Lewis — the symphony isn’t ready to rest on its laurels when it comes to programming at its outdoor concert venue.

Review: San Diego Symphony opens $85 million new venue, Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, with an eye-popping bang of a show

The performance kicked off a 40-concert outdoor season for the new venue, whose lineup includes orchestral performances by Jason Mraz, Police co-founder Stewart Copeland and rapper Nas

Aug. 7, 2021

All told, more than half of the 36 concerts announced today for The Shell’s 2024 summer season and pre-season will spotlight bands and solo acts who will be performing there for the first time. Two of those performances — “The Music of Marc Shaiman” on July 3 and “Field of Dreams in Concert” on July 19 — will be world premieres.

“It’s important that we have artists who think of The Shell as their home in Southern California, whether it’s The Beach Boys, Trombone Shorty or the Gipsy Kings — who are all returning to play for us this year — but we are always looking for new performers,” said San Diego Symphony Vice President of Artistic Administration and Audience Development Lea Slusher.

Previously Carnegie Hall’s artistic projects director in New York, Slusher has booked each of The Shell’s four summer concert seasons. She and her husband, Steve Hornsby, have the distinction of being the only couple — so far — whose marriage ceremony was conducted on the stage of The Shell.

“It’s very important for the audience, and for us, to have something new to look forward to each summer,” Slusher continued. “And it’s important for us to extend our programming by presenting all types of artists.”

Orchestral-pop trend

Both here and nationally, a growing number of non-classical-music performers are embracing the opportunity to share the stage with orchestras. That trend is continuing, judging by the number of pop artists who will be accompanied by the San Diego Symphony at The Shell this year.

Last year saw the venue host orchestral concerts with everyone from Mariachi Los Camperos and hip-hop mainstays Cypress Hill to the rock bands Guster and Airborne Toxic Unit.

This year, artists who will perform alongside the symphony at The Shell include John Legend and reggae dynamo Ziggy Marley — both of whom played at the venue, sans orchestra, last year — Pink Martini and Jason Mraz, who first teamed up with the symphony at The Shell in 2021.

John Legend performs at Royal Albert Hall on April 05, 2023 in London, England.

Having won an Emmy Award, 12 Grammys, an Oscar and a Tony Award, the veteran singer-songwriter and devoted activist is now on a band-free solo tour. He performs in San Diego Friday at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park.

June 14, 2023

“It’s definitely a trend and artists are reaching out to us,” said San Diego Symphony CEO Martha Gilmer.

“John Legend knew we’d love to do an orchestral show with him and Ziggy Marley has just created one. We can safely say that more and more artists are interested in the combination of a symphony orchestra playing with them in concert.”

The upcoming season will include several all-classical evenings, starting with the June 28 performance by the symphony with guest conductor Gemma New and pianist Olga Kern, who will be showcased on Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor, Op. 30.

Then comes the July 12 “Beethoven by the Bay” concert, for which the orchestra will be conducted by Nicolas Ellis. Violinist Geneva Lewis, a native of New Zealand, will be the featured soloist.

‘A little surprise’

San Diego Symphony Music Director Rafael Payare’s only scheduled Shell performance this summer will be at the Aug. 30: “Tchaikovsky Spectacular.” Toronto-born violinist Blake Pouliot will be showcased on Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35.

“We might have a little surprise at that concert, but I can’t tell you what it is quite yet,” Payare said playfully. “The Shell lets us pursue our more crazy projects.”

Payare is quick to note he has now led the orchestra at The Shell in all four seasons while its indoor venue, the Jacobs Music Center’s Copley Symphony Hall, has been undergoing a three-year renovation that is now nearing completion.

Classical-music superstars Lang Lang and Yo-Yo Ma will perform with the orchestra in April and May, as work nears its final stages in the $125 million renovation of the Jacobs Music Center’s downtown Copley Symphony Hall

Feb. 23, 2024

“We don’t just do our summer season at The Shell,” said the Venezuelan-born conductor, who will spend much of the summer conducting orchestras abroad.

“We have also been doing our fall and spring season there, and even our December holiday concerts,” continued Payare, who turned 44 on Feb. 23. “The Shell is such a beautiful venue, right next to the ocean, and it has allowed us to dream and expand what we are capable of doing.”

He chuckled when asked how the venue’s bayside setting has made him and the orchestra more attuned to how changes in weather can affect the sound of the music they make.

“Yes! We know even how the (onstage) microphones will react on a damp night or a very dry night,” he said. “And we know where the sun will be shining, in relation to the stage, when we do our daytime rehearsals. The sky is literally the limit at The Shell!”

Free rehearsals

The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park functions as a public park for the majority of each year.

Those rehearsals are free and open to the public, as per the symphony’s operating agreement with the Port of San Diego and the San Diego Coastal Commission.

The Shell, which occupies 3.6 acres within Embarcadero Marina Park South is open 85 percent of the year as a public park. The symphony is permitted to hold 110 concerts and events annually at the venue, which has been rented out periodically to host private corporate events. These have included separate 2022 concerts by Sting and Billy Joel, who will perform a stadium show together on April 13 at Petco Park, just a few blocks away.

The Shell is also increasingly being rented by outside promoters, including Live Nation and AEG/Goldenvoice, which are staging upcoming concerts at the venue by everyone from Primus (April 18) and Willie Nelson (April 22) to Cody Jinks (June 1) and Sarah McLachlan (June 2).

“Every year, The Shell becomes better for us — and better known,” said symphony vice president Slusher.

“The Shell has expensive overhead (to operate), no question about it, but we are on the way to where we want to be. It was hard when we opened in 2021, because none of the artists, or their agents or other promoters knew the venue. It makes a big difference when an agent or manager has been here and seen The Shell to decide that this is the right venue for their artist to perform.

“It’s the same for audiences. Once you’ve seen The Shell in person, you can appreciate how unique it is.”

Such group deals, usually featuring veteran hitmakers from the '60s and '70s, are no stranger to the Mercedes-Benz Amphitheater, which begins its first year under that name, after having been known as Tuscaloosa Amphitheater since its 2011 opening. There've been Flashback Funk Fest, another Funkaloosa, Old School Summer Fest and more.

Kool & the Gang built from jazz backgrounds in Jersey City into a diverse mix of R&B, funk, jazzz and pop, selling 70 million albums around the world. Their hits included “Jungle Boogie,” “Hollywood Swinging,” “Ladies’ Night,” “Celebration,” “Higher Plane,” “Spirit of the Boogie,” “Caribbean Festival,” “Open Sesame — Part 1,” “Too Hot,” “Take My Heart (You Can Have It If You Want It),” “Get Down on It,” “Big Fun,” “Joanna,” “Fresh,” “Misled,” “Cherish,” “Emergency,” “Victory,” “Stone Love” and “Holiday.”

Robert Bell is still playing, with original or long-time members including Curtis Williams on keyboards and trumpeters Larry Gittens and Michael Ray. Kool and the Gang played Tuscaloosa before, 2002 in the old CityFest event, which was canceled in 2006. A planned dual gig with Chicago at the amphitheater was canceled due to bad weather in August 2012.

The Bar-Kays served as Otis Redding's backing band, most of whom died with him in a 1967 plane crash. Two surviving members formed a new funk/R&B band under the old name. The Bar-Kays cut several charting singles, including "Soul Finger," "Move Your Boogie Body," "Freak Show on the Dance Floor," "Holy Ghost," "Shake Your Rump to the Funk," "Boogie Bodyland" and "Son of Shaft."

MIdnight Star played the Amp in 2022, as part of the Flashback Funk Fest, with Cameo, Dazz Band, and Lakeside, the latter of which is also returning. Midnight Star hits include "No Parking on the Dance Floor," "Wet My Whistle," "Operator" and "Freak-A-Zoid." Kool & the Gang , officially launched in 1969. Thanks to iconic songs like Celebration, Cherish, Jungle Boogie, Summer Madness, and Open Sesame, they’ve earned two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, 25 Top Ten R&B hits, 9 Top Ten Pop hits, and 31 gold and platinum albums. From Nairobi to Newark, Kool & the Gang has performed continuously longer than any R&B group in history and their bulletproof funk and jazzy arrangements have also made them the most sampled R&B band of all time.

A reviewer recently called their performance “a 24-karat show’ and every year, even after a half-century on the road, yields a non-stop schedule of shows across the globe. The heavily-in-demand band has continued to tour the world, appearing most recently alongside Kid Rock, Dave Matthews Band, Elton John, The Roots, and a 50-city tour with the legendary rock band, Van Halen.  In 1964, Ronald Bell and his brother, Robert “ Kool ” Bell, joined Jersey City neighbourhood friends Robert “ Spike ” Mickens, Dennis “ Dee Tee ” Thomas, Ricky Westfield, George Brown, and Charles Smith to create a unique musical blend of jazz, soul and funk. At first calling themselves the Jazziacs, the band went through various names–The Dimensions, The Soul Town Band, Kool & the Flames – before settling on their famous moniker. Over the next several years they solidified their musical chemistry on the rough-and-tumble East Coast music scenes supporting acts like Bill Cosby, Ritchie Havens and Richard Pryor.

The band’s stellar reputation grew with each album, but 1973’s gold disc Wild & Peaceful took Kool & the Gang to another level (#6 R&B, #33 Pop), spurred by the immortal party anthems Funky Stuff, Hollywood Swinging and the platinum smash Jungle Boogie. Hits like Higher Plane (#1 R&B), the classic Summer Madness (featured on the Grammy-winning movie soundtrack Rocky) and LPs Spirit of the Boogie, Love & Understanding and Open Sesame followed. The latter’s title track was featured on the top-selling movie soundtrack of all time, Saturday Night Fever, earning the group their second Grammy. In 1979, Kool & the Gang unveiled a smooth new sound with Ladies Night. Produced by the legendary Pop/jazz musician Eumir Deodato, it became their first platinum album.

The #1 R&B title track reached #8 at Pop. It was followed by Too Hot (#3 R&B, #5 Pop). The 80s would see them dominate the mainstream, starting with the double platinum-selling album Celebrate (driven by the international monster hit Celebration, which spent six weeks an top the R&B chart and became a #1 Pop single). Celebration, which played as the American hostages returned from Iran, remains de rigueur at joyous occasions worldwide. The smashes Get Down On It, Take My Heart, Let’s Go Dancing, Joanna, Tonight, Misled, the #1 R&B, #2Pop giant Cherish and the #1 R&B anthem Fresh (these last three from the multi-platinum LP Emergency) solidified the group’s international stardom.

Today, the group enjoys global fame and recognition and a following that spans generations due in part to the groups widely sampled catalogue. Kool & the Gang’s drum beats, bass, guitar and signature horn lines lace the tracks of numerous artists including the Beastie Boys, Jay-Z, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Cypress Hill, and P. Diddy.
