TUI could be relaunching flights at this abandoned airport

The airline is coming to the rescue two years after the beloved site closed

Two years after it closed down , Doncaster Sheffield Airport is on the brink of an iconic comeback. Named the UK’s best airport for 2022 by Which? mere months before its closure, there’s been a long campaign to get the site back up and running. 

So far, there’s been some positive progress. In February, a whopping £138 million was pledged to reopen the hub and last month the council agreed on a 125-year lease  for the site.

Now, in another exciting step in the airport’s resurgence, TUI says that is keen to relaunch its flights from there. The airline was the last one standing before Doncaster-Sheffield’s shutdown, after its main operator, Wizz Air, pulled all of its services. 

Ros Jones, mayor of Doncaster, told local media : ‘Following our lease announcement last month, we have heard from TUI that they are keen to return to our airport.

‘We have engaged TUI with the bidders for their return to our airport to be explored and we are hopeful that we will see TUI’s brand back in Doncaster.’

Everything is still to be fully confirmed, but Jones added: ‘With the right operator our airport has incredible potential to truly thrive and be the economic stimulus that we all know it can and should be.

‘Our vision is for a world leading centre for sustainable aviation and the operator will share this vision and work in partnership with us to make it a reality. Once the procurement process is concluded we will make the announcement.’

TUI Group plans to expand its profitable hotel business in Sub-Saharan Africa. In recent years, TUI Hotels & Resorts has been particularly strong in North Africa with a portfolio of 76 hotels, now the group is set to grow further in the south of the continent. The current pipeline includes eight new hotels in Cape Verde, The Gambia, Senegal, Tanzania and Kenya. Including the opening of a new brand for the upscale market segment. “The Mora Zanzibar” will officially open this summer and offers laid-back, contemporary luxury with highly tailored and flexible service.

“With our variety of hotel brands, we will create new hotel experiences in Africa for different target groups – from price-conscious holidays in a TUI Suneo hotel via our global brand TUI Blue to a new luxury experience with The Mora”, says Artur Gerber, Managing Director TUI Blue, ahead of the East Africa Property Investment Forum. “We are looking forward to contributing to the development of the African hospitality industry and working together with local communities.”

In addition to the launch of the new brand The Mora, a further TUI Blue project is also planned in East Africa. In the coming years, a new hotel with 117 rooms located in Kilifi County at the Indian Ocean will be built. The future TUI BLUE Watamu is going to be the first TUI BLUE hotel in Kenya and is being developed by Sands of Darakasi Resorts Limited. “This project is a great example how we share our expertise as a leading leisure hotel brand with partners and jointly developing new hotels on the African continent for our guests,” says Wesam Okasha, Head of Global Development TUI Blue. “In collaboration with Valor Hospitality Partners, we are currently looking for further franchise opportunities who want to become part of our growth strategy.” In East Africa, the focus is particularly on key destinations such as Mauritius, Tanzania and Kenya.  

TUI Hotels & Resorts’ current portfolio in Africa in total comprises more than 90 hotels with over 30,000 rooms across seven countries.

Our new model means that we act as an internal service provider to TUI Airline so collaboration is key for us as we build strong relationships and partner with colleagues across the Tour Operator, Engineering & Maintenance, Flight Operations and each of our local airline teams as well as across our own operational teams.

We’re looking for people who have a passion for the travel industry and enjoy working at a fast pace and being at the forefront of our operation as well as always looking for ways to improve what we do. Due to the operational nature, some of our teams work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on a rostered basis so flexibility is key to ensuring we are always there for our customers and our Flight Crew and Cabin Crew.

Airlines are highly regulated so, while it is not essential in some roles, we are always on the lookout for people who have worked either in an airline or in similarly regulated environment and can bring that experience to us.

Tui hails return to profit but warns of €25m hit from Rhodes wildfires

Tour operator reports first profitable April to June since before pandemic but says wildfire bill will come out of full-year results

The package holiday operator Tui has enjoyed its first profitable April to June since before the pandemic but warned it expects to take a €25m hit from last month’s wildfires in Rhodes .

Tui said the total wildfire bill would come out of its full-year results, and included the price of cancelling holidays, compensating customers and covering their welfare expenses, as well as flying them home.

The tour operator reported underlying pre-tax profits of €169.4m (£146m) from April to June – its first profit for the key spring and early summer period since the start of the Covid crisis and almost €197m higher than the same quarter a year earlier.

It took 5.5 million people on holiday in those three months – 0.4 million more passengers, or a rise of 9% – and said current booking levels for sunshine getaways had met its expectations for a strong summer.

Despite the cost of living crisis, this almost marked a return to pre-pandemic booking levels, as Tui carried 95% as many passengers as in the same quarter in 2019.

In recent weeks, Tui was among the travel companies that cancelled package holidays to Rhodes across several days as wildfires burned on the Greek island, providing full refunds to the affected passengers.

The company said it had evacuated a total of 8,000 customers, and had operated 12 repatriation flights to bring people home, but it added that about 80% of those holidaying on the island at the time were not affected by the fires.

It and other travel companies were urged at the time by consumer groups to reimburse holidaymakers who chose not to travel to anywhere on the island while the fires burned.

Tui said that Rhodes accounted for about 5% of its summer holiday offering this year, and while bookings had been affected straight after the fires in Rhodes and southern Europe , they had recovered quickly. The company’s foundation has launched a fundraising campaign for people on Rhodes directly affected by the fires, and said it would double every donation received.

The company said it was benefiting from strong demand but also from higher prices for holidays, and was on track to reach its expectations for full-year profit.

Tui reported it had 12.5m bookings for this summer, of which 4.3m bookings had been added since it last updated investors in early May. It has sold 86% of its summer offering, matching levels seen last year and in 2019, before the pandemic.

Certares to Fuel FTI Tech Overhaul with Takeover, $130 Million Investment

A leading travel and tourism investment firm acquires the third-largest tour operator in Europe.

Certares , a travel and tourism investment firm, led a consortium that acquired FTI Group , the third-largest tour operator in Europe.

This deal ends a restructuring begun in September to strengthen FTI’s finances.

The consortium will own all of the share capital, and FTI will get about $130 million (€125 million) to funnel into its digital transformation and growth.

“Certares’ extensive industry experience and the new capital funding position FTI for exceptional growth,” said Karl Markgraf, CEO of the FTI Group.

Certares holds stakes in a range of travel companies like G Adventures, AmaWaterways and American Express Global Business Travel. The company and another private equity firm also own a majority stake in Hertz and it acquired several hotels in the last year. Certares founder and senior managing director Greg O’Hara became the chair of the World Travel & Tourism Council in November.

Munich-based FTI Group has 120 subsidiaries in German speaking markets, the Netherlands, UK, France, and other destinations.

The group had 6 million customers as of 2022, the latest figures available. The company has also signed a memorandum of understanding to be a launch partner with Saudi Arabia for increased multi-day tours in the Middle East.

Competitors to FTI include the giant TUI Group, DER Touristik, Kuoni, and Hotelplan.
