In the simplest terms, the strategy behind thrift store flipping is to find items you know you can resell for a higher price. The goal is to find an item at a thrift store and then sell it on an online platform like eBay or Facebook Marketplace at a decent markup that makes this a worthwhile side hustle venture.

“The key is to find a few profitable niches to get started with thrift store flipping,” said Rob Stephenson, the thrift store flipping expert behind Flea Market Flipper . “It can be overwhelming to walk into a thrift store and not know what to look for. One trip around most stores can make you frazzled if you don’t know what to look for.”

This leads to the next logical question: How do you find a niche?

“First, start with things you already know. Do you have a hobby you like? What are the most expensive items in your hobby? Are you in a phase of life with babies or kids? What are some baby or kid items that are higher-end? Do you know what kitchen gadgets hold their value or are trending lately?”

You want to have a game plan before you enter the thrift store so that you don’t get discombobulated. Stephenson concludes with, “You can’t spend two hours looking up every single item and what it’s selling for, but you can learn a few niches and learn how to spot them quickly.”

How Do You Avoid Wasting Your Time?

One fundamental aspect that must be mentioned is that it’s easy to waste your time and money on this space if you don’t know what you’re looking for. You have to know your market so that you don’t end up with a home filled with junk.

This also means that you must know when to walk away from a purchase, since the whole point is to make money. “Your profit is made in the purchase of the item, so you have to know when to walk away,” Stephenson said. He goes on to mention that we luckily have the internet at our fingertips, so we don’t have to take that big of a risk.

What Skills Do You Need?

Stephenson believes that anyone can get into this business, because it doesn’t matter how old you are or how educated you are — you can learn the skills by just getting started. This is good news for anyone reading this article because it means that this is an accessible side hustle that doesn’t require you to spend money or time upgrading your skills.

Here are the skills that you should work on if you want to get into thrift store flipping:

• How to spot items at a reasonable price. You want to study prices so that you know what a good deal looks like.
• Measuring comparables on eBay and Google. You want to find similar items sold in the last 90 days on eBay or Facebook Marketplace to ensure that there’s demand for this.
• Proper packaging of your items. You can save money by printing your label through eBay. The goal is to package your items correctly so that there are no issues in transit.
• How to negotiate. As a thrift store flipper, you have to negotiate with both buyers and sellers.

“Negotiating doesn’t have to feel icky. If you do it right, it should be a win for everyone,” according to Stephenson.

What Thrift Store Purchases Can Always Be Flipped for Profit?

Are there thrift store purchases that can always be flipped for profit? According to Stephenson, “It’s hard to say what always sells because items go out of style and get upgraded, but if you have solid brands in your niche , they will most likely sell.”

It’s also not worth looking for the ultra-rare beanie baby, as they’re not worth it. You can also save time and hassle by limiting the number of items you seek.

As far as thrift store finds, here is a list of different categories of items that you should be looking to flip from thrift stores:

• Vintage items: Video game consoles, video games, old vintage tube TVs for the retro games, record players, phonographs and typewriters
• Kitchen gadgets: Crockpots, coffeepots, toaster ovens, bread makers, toaster ovens, microwaves, cooktops and pressure cookers
• Electronics: Old phones, laptops and tablets
• Furniture: Coffee tables, bar stools, chairs, patio furniture, desks and dining tables
• Sports equipment: Skates, roller blades, baseball gloves, bats, golf clubs, tennis rackets, cleats, dumbbells, treadmills and ellipticals
• Outdoor equipment: Camping gear, road bikes, tents, hiking backpacks, scooters and mountain bikes
• Brand name clothes: Dress shirts, suits, ties, dresses, jeans and vintage shirts
• Shoes: Men’s dress shoes, women’s heels, boots, running shoes and golfing shoes
• Kids’ toys: Legos, American Girl dolls and accessories, Matchbox cars, Pottery Barn and Barbie Dreamhouses
• Collectibles: Trading cards, Pokemon and sports memorabilia
• Tools/indoor equipment: Lamps, paintings, vacuum cleaners, rugs, air purifiers, holiday decorations, digital picture frames, clocks and craft supplies
• Jewelry: Costume jewelry, sterling silver and gold jewelry
• Instruments: Trumpets, flutes, saxophones and guitars

7.4 magnitude quake hits Taiwan, strongest in 25 years

Rescuers are working to free dozens trapped after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the east coast of Taiwan — causing landslides and collapsed structures.

At least nine people have died , more than 900 others are injured and over 100 buildings have been damaged.

The quake is the strongest to hit Taiwan in 25 years .

Here's what else we know:

• The quake:  The earthquake  hit  at 7:58 a.m. local time, 18 kilometers (11 miles) south of the city of Hualien at a depth of 34.8 kilometers, according to the US Geological Survey.
• Aftershocks : The quake was followed by 29 aftershocks greater than a magnitude of 4.0 near the epicenter of the earthquake in east Taiwan so far, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Tremors have been felt across the island, including in Taipei. Tremors as high as magnitude 7 are  expected  in the following days.
• Hualien County:  The region where the quake struck, Hualien County, has a population of about 300,000, around 100,000 of whom live in the main city of Hualien. But many in the region live in remote coastal or mountain communities that  can be hard to reach , so it might take time to understand the extent of Wednesday's quake.
• Trapped miners: Taiwan's national fire agency said that 71 people are trapped in two mines in Hualien.
• Power cuts : More than 91,000 households were without electricity, according to Taiwan's Central Emergency Command Center.
• Medical facilities: Hospitals across Taiwan’s capital , Taipei City, are operating normally despite being damaged by Wednesday’s earthquake, according to the Municipal Government.
• US monitoring: The Biden administration is monitoring the earthquake in Taiwan overnight and is prepared to offer assistance, a National Security Council spokesperson said Wednesday. 

71 miners trapped in 2 mines in Taiwan after earthquake, national fire agency says

Taiwan's national fire agency said that 71 people are trapped in two mines in Hualien after a powerful earthquake struck the island. 

In the Heping mine, there are 64 people trapped, and seven more are trapped in the Zhonghe mine, the fire agency said in a news conference on Wednesday.

Taiwanese semiconductor facilities will resume production overnight following earthquake

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC), the chipmaking giant, said on Wednesday that its facilities which were impacted by the 7.4 magnitude earthquake are expected to resume production overnight. 

TSMC reported that their overall tool recovery is at more than 70% within 10 hours of the earthquake striking the island. Safety systems are also operating normally, TSMC added.

The company noted that a small number of tools were damaged but that there was no damage to its extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) tools. Work at construction sites will resume after further inspections are complete, TSMC said.

Earlier, a TSMC spokesperson told CNN they had evacuated some manufacturing plants. All personnel are now safe, TSMC said in an update.

Biden administration monitoring Taiwan earthquake, White House says

The Biden administration is monitoring the earthquake in Taiwan overnight and is prepared to offer assistance, a National Security Council spokesperson said Wednesday. 

"We are monitoring reports of the earthquake impacting Taiwan and continue to monitor its potential impact on Japan. The United States stands ready to provide any necessary assistance. All those affected are in our prayers," a statement from National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said.

7 major earthquakes have hit Taiwan over the last 50 years

The 7.4 magnitude earthquake that killed at least nine people and injured hundreds Wednesday, is the strongest to hit Taiwan in 25 years .

Over the last 50 years, the island has experienced a total of seven major earthquakes, the last being a 7.1 magnitude quake in 2006 in Pingtung County in southern Taiwan.

The island sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire , which makes it prone to earthquakes.

29 aftershocks above 4.0 magnitude have occurred near epicenter since earthquake, US Geological Survey says

There have been 29 aftershocks greater than a magnitude of 4.0 near the epicenter of the earthquake in east Taiwan so far, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Of these aftershocks:

• One was above 6.0
• 13 have been at or above 5.0
• 14 have been above 4.0.

Forecast during recovery efforts: Tonight's forecast in Hualien City, near the epicenter, calls for increasing cloud coverage. Thursday is looking at mostly cloudy skies with afternoon showers and rain Thursday night and Friday during the day.

Rainfall totals should be relatively light for Taiwan, with models calling for under 25 mm (less than 1 inch) by Friday evening local time.

As a result, local officials are warning that those in the path of totality , especially in places where there are large crowds, can expect issues with service on their phones.

If you'll be viewing the eclipse in a crowded area, like you would be during a music festival or a sporting event, then you know that you might face some network disruptions, making it difficult to place phone calls or use the internet.

And without internet, you might be in a bind, especially if you're visiting somewhere in the path of totality and you know nothing of the area. Getting from one place to another could be impossible without access to online maps.

That's why you should know how to download a map (or several) on Google Maps, so that any disruptions don't affect you getting from points A to B. Here's what you need to know.

How to download Google Maps offline

First off, you won't download all of Google Maps in its entirety. Instead, before your trip, you'll want to download a specific area, which could be a city, county or region where you'll be spending time and might not have service on your phone.

To download a map in Google Maps offline, open the Google Maps app on iOS or Android and tap your profile picture on the top right (you must be logged in to your Google account for this to work). In the menu that appears, tap Offline maps > Select Your Own Map.

You can download multiple Google Maps areas offline.

Use your fingers to place the map you want to download within the confines of the rectangle border. Use one finger to move across the map, and a two-finger pinch to zoom in and out. As you move around the map, you'll see how much storage space the download will take up on your phone. Once you're happy with the area, tap Download . 

Note : Alternatively, you can type a city or other area into Google Maps and then hit the  Download  button that appears in the pull-up window to download the map offline, but this only works on the iPhone.

You must be connected to Wi-Fi to download the map. If you want to download over cellular, go to the Offline maps page, tap the gear icon on the top right, tap When to download offline maps and select Over Wi-Fi or mobile network . Once your map is downloaded, you'll be sent back to the Offline maps page, where you can see all your offline maps.

You can only download a map that's a maximum 250 MB (what will appear in the selected map as roughly the size of Maine). 

Now you'll be able to use Google Maps even when you're offline in the area you downloaded -- and in that area only. You won't get extremely accurate travel times or alternate route options because traffic and other road issues are not accounted for, but you will get a general ballpark of how long your trip should take. Transit, bicycling and walking directions are also not available offline -- only driving directions. 

You'll know you're using your offline map when you see a little cloud icon with a line through it in Google Maps.

The elephant tips over the vehicle, and you can hear panicked screams from the tour guide as well as the patrons -- including what sounds like the woman who actually died.

A chief executive of a conservation and hospitality company called Wilderness Safaris -- which was heading up this trip -- later confirmed that an American tourist had been killed in the attack ... and that another female guest had been seriously injured, and was flown to a hospital.

Four other guests who were part of this safari were treated on-site for minor injuries, and were provided trauma counseling as well.

In terms of how this happened, Wildness says the guide's route became blocked by the terrain and vegetation as they were driving along -- and that they didn't have enough time to move the vehicle out of the way before the elephant could hit them.

They called the incident "extremely tragic" and sent their condolences to the victim's family.
