Destinations

The great variety of our 3, 4 and 7 day Greece cruises with Celestyal Cruises, will give you the opportunity to visit the most magnificent destinations.

Capital of Greece, cradle of democracy, birthplace of Western Civilization. Athens is a vibrant city where old and new coexist. The majestic Parthenon rises above the city, its ancient glory still visible in the timeworn stone, and the National Archaeological Museum holds countless treasures from Athens' Golden Age.

It is the most breathtaking of all the Greek Islands. The town of Fira with white-washed houses, narrow streets, open-air cafes and glittering boutiques cling to steep cliffs is accesible by cable-car or mule. The village of Oia is a "must", an inspiration to all artists with numerous art galleries and spectacular views.

Here you will find beautiful beaches, chic boutiques and elegant nightclubs. Beneath its sophisticated surface lies a quite essential Greek island. Hundreds of tiny chapels dot this blue and white-washed island with its beautiful windmills. Find a table on the waterfront and bask in the serenity of sunset over its picturesque harbor.

Heraklion, Crete

Heraklion is the capital of Crete and its principal commercial port is just three miles away from the fantastic ruins of the Palace of Knossos. Discovered in 1899 by Sir Arthur Evans and partially reconstructed, the eleborate Palace is believed to be the mythical Labyrinth of King Minos and the seat of ancient Minoan culture.

The beautiful "Island of Roses" has a rich and varied history. A mix of modern and medieval, fascinates and impresses each visitor. On a hill above the charming town of Lindos rises an ancient acropolis dedicated to the goddess Athena. Below lies the bay of St.Paul where the apostle landed during his voyages.

It is very often called as "The Jerusalem of the Aegean Sea", is known as the site of the apocalyptic Revelations of St.John the Divine, written here during his exile from the Roman Empire. The cave where he lived is near the site of the Monastery of St.John, built on one of the island`s highest points and houses priceless manuscripts in its Treasury.

New Cruises From Athens (Piraeus)

Cruises from Athens depart from Piraeus, the port of Athens about 7.5 miles (12km) from its city center. Before you leave on your cruise to Greek islands, take time to explore Athens' sun-dappled blend of ancient city and modern metropolis. Get up close to fascinating symbols of Western Civilization, such as the Parthenon, built in the 5th century B.C. See stone-carved stadiums and temples that dwell alongside stacked apartments. Watch the tangerine sun sink into sprawling cityscape from the top of Areopagus Hill. Share a mezze platter with friends, some ouzo and some laughs before it’s time to depart on your cruise from Athens.

Best Greece cruises: Top 5 ships sailing the Greek isles

Ashley Kosciolek

From ancient mythology to wine and olives, there's a lot to love about Greece . There's something magical about the contrast between the deep-blue waters of the Aegean Sea and the ancient ruins and white buildings found on the Greek islands.

The best Greece cruises are those that offer a well-rounded mix of islands and key Greece destinations: Athens for its ruins, Santorini for its blue-roofed churches, Mykonos for its shopping and nightlife, and Rhodes for its palace and charming cobblestone streets. Best Greek isles cruises for families: Disney Dream

5 day cruises from athens greece

Disney Cruise Line is ideal for families. If a Disney cruise to Greece with kids sounds appealing, Disney Dream is the ship that will take you there.

The vessel is not the line's newest, but it's also not the oldest, so you'll still find plenty to do on board. The 2,500-passenger ship's small size means it's easy to learn your way around. Even better, Disney Dream is typically more affordable than the line's newer vessels.

Your children likely won't be bored on the ship. Dream offers jaw-dropping entertainment and daily character appearances. Its magical kids clubs feature a replica of Andy's room from "Toy Story" and the Millennium Falcon's cockpit from "Star Wars." (Expect surprise visits from R2-D2 or a squad of stormtroopers.)

Also, Greece is wrapped in tons of ancient history to spark your family's imagination. For example, in Athens, your family might choose to take a guided tour of the Acropolis, followed by a "day in the life of an archeologist" experience, where you'll search for treasures in a faux archeological dig.

If the kids prefer something sportier, they might enjoy an excursion that takes visitors to the Panathenaic Stadium for a tour and a talk about the first Olympic games of the modern era.

Disney Dream sails eight-, nine- and 11-night voyages from $416 per person, per night, for a windowless inside cabin. Some itineraries sail round-trip from Rome, while others cruise one-way between Rome and Barcelona with calls on Athens, Mykonos and other ports in Greece.

Best adults-only Greece cruises for party animals: Resilient Lady

5 day cruises from athens greece

If you enjoy a lively megaship party atmosphere but you don't want an environment that's overrun with kids, Virgin Voyages ' Resilient Lady will likely be the best Greece cruise option for you.

Although Virgin's Greece itineraries are pretty standard, its onboard experience is what sets it apart in the region.

The adults-only ship combines a casual vibe with a ramped-up nightlife. You'll find passengers dressed up like mermaids, crew dressed up like drag queens and performers that more accurately represent a cross-section of real life than those whom you'll find on most other lines' vessels.

Nighttime shows run the gamut from lounge singers and seemingly impromptu atrium dance parties to secret below-deck visits to the "crew bar" for a tipple. There's also Scarlet Night — a rave-like pool-deck dance party where everyone wears red.

If that's not wild enough for you, there's also an app that lets you order Champagne to wherever you are on board, free fitness classes that encourage you to dress up in your '80s best and even a tattoo parlor so you can make some bad decisions.

Resilient Lady sails seven-, 10- and 14-night cruises, starting at $148 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. The voyages feature stops in Croatia, Turkey and Montenegro, in addition to Greece (Santorini, Rhodes and overnight in Mykonos from Athens), depending on the specific itinerary you choose.

Best budget-friendly Greece cruises: Rhapsody of the Seas

5 day cruises from athens greece

Want to check out Greece but have limited funds? Although you'll have to factor in potentially expensive flights to Israel to board, a voyage on Royal Caribbean 's Rhapsody of the Seas could be right up your alley.

The ship is one of Royal Caribbean's older ships — it debuted in 1997 — but that doesn't mean you won't find fun onboard activities such as trivia, pool games, nightly theater performances, game shows, dancing and live music.

The best part if you're on a budget is the price. You can snag sailings of five or seven nights, round-trip from Haifa, from just $65 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. Voyages include calls to ports in Rhodes, Athens, Santorini and Mykonos, as well as Cyprus.

Best small-ship luxury Greece cruises: Windstar's Wind Star

5 day cruises from athens greece

Windstar Cruises ' namesake, Wind Star, is a 148-passenger masted sailing yacht that offers a special Greek islands experience.

The ship is great for sailing aficionados. Because of its small size, the ship can visit smaller ports that larger vessels can't access. (Think Patmos, known to theology buffs as the place where the book of Revelation was written; Monemvasia, a town carved into rock; and Nafplion, modern Greece's original capital and now the site of museums, churches and castles.)

Also, Wind Star is an upscale ship, which means you'll find elevated dining and service on board. All cabins offer at least one window. When you purchase an all-inclusive fare, Wi-Fi, gratuities and alcohol are rolled into the price.

The vessel sails weeklong Greece cruises round-trip from Athens and calls on Mykonos, Santorini, Patmos, Monemvasia and Nafplion in Greece, as well as Kusadasi in Turkey. Rates start from $500 per person, per night, for an outside cabin.

Best locally based Greek isles cruises: Celestyal Journey

5 day cruises from athens greece

Celestyal Cruises is a line you don't hear about too often, but it's based in Greece, which means it has a unique perspective on Greek island sailings.

If you're looking for a cruise vacation that's full of local Greek flare, check out the brand's Celestyal Journey. Set to debut for the line in September 2023, the ship isn't new, but following an extensive refurbishment, it will become the youngest member of the line's fleet.

Holding about 1,200 passengers, Celestyal Journey is small enough that you'll still receive a personalized experience but large enough to offer a multitude of onboard amenities. Enjoy yourself at the spa and fitness center, eight bars, seven restaurants, a chef's table experience and two pools. The ship offers 630 cabins, including 149 balcony cabins, 120 junior suites and 28 full-fledged suite accommodations.

Itineraries offered by Celestyal Journey range from four to 28 nights, departing from either Athens or Thessaloniki. Most voyages include calls on well-known Greek ports like Santorini, Rhodes and Mykonos, while longer sailings also venture to places in Turkey and Montenegro. Pricing is not yet available.

Bottom line

The best cruises to Greece combine a mix of fascinating destinations with a ship that fits your budget and travel style. If you're still unsure which cruise to choose, check with a knowledgeable cruise travel agent who can help you sort through the options.

The Celestyal Experience: My Detailed Celestyal Cruise Review

My 4 night cruise from Athens was on board Celestyal Olympia. Celestyal Cruises offer a whole range of options to cruise Greek Isles. I was on the one called Iconic Aegean Cruise.

The route formed a loop, departing from Athens to the Greek islands, and then back again. This was my first cruise experience and to say I was excited would be an understatement with wide-eyed wonder, to visit places that had been on my travel bucket list for eons.

Aegean Islands Cruise Stops

  • Kusadasi (Turkey)
  • Laviron (Athens)

The Olympia, Celestyal Cruise ship at the middle of the sea

I’ve partnered with Celestyal Cruises to bring you this travel guide. This article is based on the destinations and experiences I took part in. All views and opinions are my own.

Facilities Onboard the Celestyal Cruise Ship

Celestyal cruise ships aren’t the biggest vessels you’ll find, which means if you’re a regular to cruises, don’t compare them to the super-size ships you’ll get in places like the Caribbean.

That said, there was no lack of facilities on board! And it was still big enough for me to lose my bearing on more than one occasion. Thankfully, there’s a Celestyal Crystal deck plan in the foyer on every level which I had to look pretty much every time I wanted to go anywhere – as my first cruise, it felt like a big ship!

Dining Facilities

There were two main dining areas on board. The main one is on Deck 4, and a smaller less-formal one is on Deck 9. These both offered buffet-style menus. You could also have the a la carte menu on Deck 9.

I tried a variety of meals from the buffet selection as well as the menu. Both were excellent in terms of variety and quality – even for a vegetarian!

As part of the dining experience, you could also have house wine included with your meal as well as soft drinks and water. I had the premium-level drinks package which also included things like prosecco, premium wines, spirits, and cocktails – and yes, I took full advantage of this!

If you’re celebrating a special occasion or want something a little bit different, then I would recommend opting for the 6-course Greek Table Experience at least once during your time on the cruise.

The boat runs a cashless system. Every time you order something your keycard gets swiped. At dinner, this is used to authorise any drinks you want. If you have a drinks package, they only get registered, but without charge.

If you don’t have a drink package, then any drinks you order during your stay get billed to this card and you pay the balance on the final day.

Food served at Dining on the Celestyal Cruise with a cashless payment system

Wanting to make the most of my premium drink package, I made a point of trying out all the bars on board – at least a few times each! There are seven to choose from.

Opening times for each of them vary, although my two favourite ones were either Horizon Bar on Deck 12 during the daytime, which was unarguably the best viewing spot on the ship.

I also spent a decent amount of time in Eclipse Bar on Deck 7. This is where I ended up most evenings as it had musicians and singers, lots of seating, and was next to the Theatre, which I would have been in before.

Swimming Pool and Helios Bar above the cruise ship

At each stop, there were options for three different excursions. They each had a different focus. I opted for ones that either did a walking tour or a ruin site.

You’re not obliged to go with a tour, and if you prefer, you can get off at the port and do your own thing or opt to stay on the ship and use the facilities there.

Tours need to be booked in advance. You’ll be able to pick up a brochure which gives details of everything on offer and there are bundle discounts for multiple bookings.

Every excursion uses knowledgeable local guides and makes use of Whispers – a device you wear around your neck, with a headphone attached.

Because I wanted to see so much, I did one excursion at every stop, I really enjoyed every one of the excursions.

However, doing all of them can feel quite rushed. I was often getting back from one excursion, eating, and trying to cram in an afternoon activity on board before heading off on to another excursion.

If I was doing this exact trip again, I’d probably limit myself to just one excursion a day to allow for a little more downtime. However, the FOMO kept getting the better of me!

The cruise ship, Celestyal Olympia, is parked at the shore

Entertainment

Each day has a fully packed schedule of things to do, which is great if you don’t feel like getting off the ship.

There’s a pool on the top deck, as well as a gym if you want to work off all the delicious food you’ve been eating.

You’ll also be given a daily paper that lists everything happening.

Activities range from kids’ games clubs, minigolf, dance lessons, cooking demonstrations, bingo, fitness, karaoke, and even language lessons! I joined the Greek dance class which proved to be a lot of fun!

In the evening, the highlight is the Theatre. Every night is a different show based on a different theme. Expect acrobatics, singers, dancers, and glorious costumes.

Lots of the bars also have live music throughout the day and night, don’t miss the disco pumping out a range of dance floor classics late night.

People on the cruise take part in daytime dance classes

If you’re after relaxation, then there’s an onsite spa. This offers various beauty treatments as well as massage.

You’ll also find a range of shops selling everything from souvenirs, bags, watches, clothing, and snacks (just in case you’re hungry!)

Cabins Onboard Celestyal Cruises Ships

During my 5 day Greek Island cruise, I stayed in a twin cabin with a sea view.

The rooms were clean and homely. Twice a day the housekeeping team brought fresh towels and toiletries. I often came back to my room to find an elephant, flower, or rabbit folded towel sitting on my bed which added a fun touch.

The rooms were well equipped and had plenty of storage space, as well as a hairdryer, safe, and TV which all made for a very comfortable cruise for 4 nights.

Two beds in one room on the Olympia

Every one of the Celestyal staff I met was outstanding in every way possible.

During my time on the cruise, I was really looked after. Even if I try to find a little fault, I just can’t – this was some of the best customer service I’ve ever had and it really gave a VIP feel to my first cruise experience.

The restaurant staff were always ready to greet our group and the bar staff even remembered what my favourite cocktail was – an Old Fashioned if anyone’s asking – although maybe their remembering my drink was more of a reflection on me, spending far too many late evenings there!

Overall, I was incredibly impressed with all of the crew from the moment we boarded the ship until we disembarked on our final day.

What to Expect on the Iconic Aegean Cruise

One of the best things about doing the Celestyal Cruises Iconic Aegean Sea cruise is that you get a little taste of a lot of different destinations.

I’ve travelled a lot, however, Greece was somewhere that had eluded me for years. Previously, I had only visited Crete on a family holiday as a young child – so young, that I don’t really count it as places I’ve visited purely because I don’t remember much.

Island hopping was a great way to see a lot in a short space of time. Every island I visited was more like a tease. It had an almost ‘try before you buy’ effect, and is a great way to sample the diversity of the islands.

Day 1 – Mykonos

After nearly an all day cruise to get here, this was our first stop. We arrived on the gorgeous island of Mykonos in the late afternoon for our first excursion.

This is probably the most picturesque Greek island on the Aegean Sea – well, either here, or Santorini!

The island of Mykonos has a reputation as the ‘party island’ of Greece, especially during the peak summer months.

One of the benefits of visiting during shoulder season is that I was able to appreciate the pretty cobblestoned streets flanked by white sugar-cube-like buildings. Bright blue doors and colourful pink flowers set the scene beautifully.

It was so special getting to experience this with next to no one in the town – an impossible feat in peak season!

White street and white staircase at Mykonos Streets

We started with a tour of the old town, stopping off at various landmarks.

Two of the most photographed places are the Mykonos Windmills and Little Venice. These are popular spots for sunset, and even in the shoulder season, they do get crowded as the sun goes down.

As the sun set, we took the shuttle bus to a local tavern outside the main town to enjoy a traditional Mykonian Dinner.

As a vegetarian, I was spoilt for choice. Greece is one of the best countries I’ve visited where I didn’t feel like I was missing out as a lot of their traditional food is naturally meat free.

We had Greek dips to start with, then followed by a Greek salad, stuffed peppers, and fresh bread with olive oil all washed down with local wine!

I am standing with the Mykonos Windmills at sunset

Day 2 – Kusadasi (Turkey)

Although this is mostly a Greek Isles cruise, one of the stops was to the coastal town of Kusadasi.

As a huge fan of temples and ruins , I took the excursion out to the ruins of Ephesus. The gates open at 8 am, our bus arrived about 20 minutes early. This meant we were first in – which is how I managed to get photos with no one in them!

The ruins of Ephesus are some of the best preserved in all of the Mediterranean. The Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, still stands here although you’ll only see fragments of ruins.

The city used to be one of the Mediterranean’s main commercial centres and you’ll see evidence of Greek and Roman architectural styles

The temples at Ephesus feature gray-brown archways with intricate details on the top of the archways

Some of the main highlights at this UNESCO World Heritage site include the Agora, the Library of Celsus – which shares an uncanny resemblance to The Treasury at Petra, Jordan – as well as an impressive Odeon and a well-preserved collonaded marble-paved street flanked by intricate millennia-old carvings.

After the morning exploring the ruin sites, we had some time to explore the souks around the town of Kusadasi before getting back on the ship.

We had two stops on today’s Iconic Aegean Greek Islands cruise itinerary.

The view of the Amphitheatre at Ephesus showcases a semi-circular shape with stone staircases or seating

Day 2 – Patmos

Our next stop was at another popular Greek island in the Aegean, the island of Patmos.

Lots of the Aegean Sea islands feature the traditional windmills, icing-block houses and winding cobblestone alleys – it was no different here.

We started on the hilltop town of Chora. First at the windmills of Patmos where we were able to take in the views of the island before going on to explore the labyrinth-like town.

The medieval town was made up of a maze of winding alleys, tunnelled pathways, steps and dead ends – all part of the design to help protect it from invasion.

Streets at Chora showcases the white walls and old pathway

We spent a decent amount of time in this timeless town before moving on to our next stop.

Patmos is a well-known pilgrimage site, as it was here that Saint John the Theologian wrote the Book of Revelation. We visited the Cave of the Apocolypse which is where Saint John took refuge and saw the visions on which he based the book.

The streets of Chora are lined with white walls, blue doors, and blue windows

Day 3 – Rhodes

Our third day started on the island of Rhodes. As a fanatic of ruin sites, I opted for the excursion to the Acropolis of Lindos.

Lindos is a pretty little town set on a hillside. It features the signature winding streets dotted with souvenir shops, churches, cafes and restaurants. These lead up the hillside to the Acropolis of Lindos.

One thing to note, there are a lot of steps! I know this was given as a warning when people booked this excursion. If you do have mobility issues, it could prove challenging getting up here.

The streets of Lindos feature accessories and jewelry displayed along the street

A reward for the climb is an incredibly picturesque ruin site, perched on a cliff edge overlooking the sea on one side, and the town of Lindos on the other.

The Acropolis of Lindos has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. It dates back to around 300 BC and was once a fortress.

Some of the best things to see here are the famous Lion’s Gate entrance as well as the Temple of Athena – if you’ve seen the Acropolis or Ancient Agora in Athens , then it does share a lot of similarities with the temples at both.

Gray-black cat in the old town of Rhodes

After exploring Lindos, you get to spend the rest of the day around the historic centre of Rhodes.

The old centre oozes with history as well as being the site for one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World – the Colossus of Rhodes. You can visit the site where the gigantic statue apparently once stood in the old harbour.

With your guide, you’re given a whistle-stop tour of the ancient city, and then have a whole afternoon to yourself to explore in more depth. Some unmissable sites are the Palace of the Grand Masters, St Paul’s Gate and Street of the Knights as well as the wall walk.

The view of Rhodes from the City Wall Walk features a manicured garden, plants, and trees surrounded by houses

Day 4 – Crete

Crete is the largest Aegean island, we arrive early in the day at the port of Heraklion.

I had visited Crete once before on a family holiday as a child, but I don’t remember much of it. The one thing I do remember though was the Ruins of Knossos – my obsession with temples and ruins is evidently quite deep-rooted. I was super excited to have the opportunity to go back to this site.

The ancient city of Knossos was inhabited by the Minoans. It is the site of Europe’s oldest city and the mythical Labyrinth.

Knossos differs quite a bit from the other ruins I had seen so far in Greece. The main difference is the colourful frescoes which adorn the buildings – however many of them are recreations. Even so, they are beautiful and I’m glad I got to visit the ruin site all these years on.

Paintings at Knossos displayed in a wall

Some of the highlights of Knossos are the central court and the royal apartments. The central court is a large open area surrounded by columns, which makes for some amazing photos.

The royal apartments have been meticulously reconstructed to show how they would have looked in their heyday and where you can see the majority of the colourful frescos.

After Knossos, we headed to Heraklion for some free time.

It feels like I have barely scratched the surface in Crete – this is a huge island. I’d certainly like to come back and explore more of the towns of Crete in a lot more depth sometime.

After visiting Heraklion, we headed back to our Aegean cruise ship for the next stop of the day.

Big red columns with orange color walls at Knossos Ruins

Day 4 – Santorini

The second stop of the day was to one of the most renowned Greek Islands in the Aegean: Santorini.

With such a short time here it was hardly enough to do it justice – plus we had stormy looking skies above – it just means it’s a great excuse to come back – not that I need much persuasion.

I opted to do the volcano tour. Partly because I’d already seen a lot of white houses, but also because the weather wasn’t ideal for capturing those iconic blue skied photos. Besides – I love volcanoes – or any natural landscape, so it was a no-brainer to go and explore Nea Kameri.

We took a small boat over to the island. Because of the dark rocks, grey skies, and rain earlier in the day, made all the colours of the island so vibrant. Looking for the silver lining, the inclement weather definitely played a part in helping me capture incredibly dramatic images here.

Rugged Landscape at Nea Kameri in a cloudy sky

The volcano in Santorini is still active on this crescent-shaped island. Our guide explained to us the geology of the island, and how the island of Santorini came to be the shape it is today.

Historically, it was once a circular island with a small entry, then in the 1600s, a massive volcanic eruption caused the centre of the island to be destroyed and it became an underwater crater dotted with separate islands.

We made our way up the volcano for more phenomenal views. We could see steam rising out of the ground, which made the experience so atmospheric. It is a bit whiffy in places because of the sulphur.

Because this is still an active volcano, the ground is still warm. Our guide dug a little hole and just beneath the surface, the ground was hot! It reminded me of the time I toasted a marshmallow in a volcano during my trip to Guatemala.

After our short time in Santorini, we reboarded the boat for our final night.

Day 5 – Laviron (Athens)

On the fifth day, we arrived back in Laviron which is where our Iconic Aegean Cruise ended.

There are options for excursions into the ancient capital of Athens. For me, I took the transfer back to the city, exhausted but having enjoyed the most outstanding, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Typically, I travel in a much slower style. However, there is so much to see in Greece that I would highly recommend joining the Iconic Aegean Cruise to see and experience a lot in a short space of time.

Sometimes Athens gets a bad reputation for being dangerous and dirty. I didn’t experience that at all, on the contrary! It’s an amazing city, and I recommend spending at least a few days in Athens before onward travel.

How to Get to Celestyal Cruises, Greece

Most people arrive in Athens by plane. From there, transfer down to the port.

There are numerous options for a Greek island cruise from Athens, and the capital has three ports. The Iconic Aegean Cruise with Celestyal leaves from Lavrion which is 60km southeast of the capital.

You could make your own way to Laviron by public bus. However, the easiest option is by taxi. From Athens city centre, the journey will take just under an hour. If you’re going directly from Athens airport, then it takes around 30 minutes.

Other Options With Celestyal Cruises, Greece

There are loads of Greece cruise packages with Celestyal.

I did the 5D/4N version of the Iconic Agean Cruise. They also do a 4D/3N version of this cruise from Athens to Santorini.

Another popular option is the Celestyal Cruise Idyllic Aegean , which lasts for 7 nights stopping off at Thessaloniki and Milos.

Iconic Aegean With Celestyal Cruises Review – FAQs

I’ve gone into quite a bit of depth about what to expect on a Celestyal Cruise. This section answers some other questions that I didn’t cover in the main part of my review.

Who Do Celestyal Cruises Cater For?

Celestyal Cruises cater to all ages and budgets. Onboard, you’ll find plenty of activities and entertainment to enjoy, including live shows, discos, fitness classes, and more. The cruise staff are also multilingual so they can assist guests from around the world.

Can I Do the Iconic Aegean Cruise as a Solo Traveler?

Yes, the Iconic Aegean Cruise is a great option for solo travellers. The onboard activities are a great way to meet other guests, they even have dedicated solo traveller get-togethers, and the shore excursions happen in groups.

What Clothes Do I Need to Pack for a Cruise?

For the offshore excursions plan to wear lighter comfortable clothing. Shorts, sundresses, and lightweight trousers are all great options. Prepare for cooler evenings with a cardigan or jacket. If you plan to do any swimming, remember to pack your swimsuit and towel. Also, something a little dressier for the gala dinner and evenings.

When Is the Best Time to Do a Greek Island Cruise?

You can take a cruise around the Greek Islands at any time of year. If you’re after the best weather , then go during the summer months. Temperatures range from around 21-27°C (70-80°F) from May to October, with temperatures often rising above 29°C ( 85°F) in July and August. However, if you’re looking for more affordable prices and fewer crowds, consider cruising in the shoulder season from April to May or September to October.

Thinking of Doing an Aegean Cruise From Athens?

Are you thinking of taking this iconic Aegean Cruise with Celestyal Cruises?

I hope my Celestyal Cruises review based on my personal experience has given you some insight on what to expect, and answered any questions you might have.

As my first cruise, this set the standard pretty high. Although I’m typically more of a slow traveller, the great thing about doing a cruise like this is that it gives you a little taste of lots of different places.

I know I’ll certainly be back in the Aegean Islands to explore them more in-depth. The only problem now is choosing which one to start with

With its stunning beaches, rich history, iconic landmarks, and delectable cuisine, a trip to Greece is always a great idea. However, since the nation is home to more than 6,000 islands — some of which are only accessible by boat — your best bet is to explore via cruise. Just take it from Rob Clabbers, Travel + Leisure A-List travel advisor and Q Cruise + Travel founder, who tells T+L that “Greece and the Greek isles are just the perfect destinations to explore by ship” since “a cruise allows you to see more islands and gives you a unique vantage point.” Several of the best Greece cruises also include visits to neighboring countries like Turkey and Italy, for example, which allow travelers to experience several cultures and countries in one action-packed trip. Intrigued? We don’t blame you: Ahead, check out our favorite Greece cruises for every type of traveler, along with itinerary recommendations and expert insight.

Meet the Expert

Rob Clabbers is a T+L A-List travel advisor and founder of Q Cruise + Travel, a Chicago-based travel agency.

Mary Curry is a T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist.

Kari Dillon is the owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, an agency specializing in theme park and cruise vacations.

Megan Guinnup is a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels.

Windstar Cruises

Courtesy of Windstar

According to Clabbers, this small luxury cruise line is perfect for those who prefer “a smaller, more casual yacht-style experience.” Per the pro, the onboard vibes are best described as “upscale, but not stuffy or over-the-top.” It’s also worth noting that “each ship offers a water sports platform with kayaks, water trampolines, stand-up paddling, snorkel gear, floating carpets, and other ‘toys’ that are deployed (weather and location permitting, of course) at least once on most Greek itineraries.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Windstar’s Greece itineraries, Clabbers is quick to call out the popular Treasures of the Greek Isles voyage, which sets sail each week from May through October. Passengers can visit beloved ports of call like Mykonos and Santorini, along with “lesser-known (and less-crowded!) places like Monemvasia and Patmos.” As part of the experience, guests have the unique opportunity to feast among the ruins in neighboring Turkey as part of the line’s complimentary Evening in Ephesus “after-hours” event, which, per Clabbers, features a decadent five-course dinner accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Speaking of culinary offerings, it’s worth mentioning that Windstar is the official cruise line partner of the esteemed James Beard Foundation, which means you can expect some of the top eats at sea.

Explora Journeys

Courtesy of Explora Cruises

“A new entrant in the luxury travel industry, Explora Journeys offers all the style and comfort of a modern European luxury resort property on its 922-guest yacht-inspired Explora I and, launching later this year, Explora II, ” explains Clabbers. The line has taken the industry by storm, doing away with cliche cruise staples like main dining rooms, large buffets, and notoriously small staterooms. Instead, says Clabbers, guests can choose from a selection of “excellent restaurants that other companies would call specialty restaurants,” as well as “four swimming pools, each with their own vibe,” and all-suite accommodations, some of which boast private plunge pools. Per the pro, it’s worth noting that “Explora Journeys is the first luxury line that offers a dedicated youth activity program and facility year-round;” as such, it’s an excellent option for multi-generational families looking to cruise Greece in style.

Itinerary: Sailing round-trip from Athens, the aptly named eight-night A Journey from Athens to Athens itinerary includes a mix of popular ports like Mykonos and Santorini, along with hidden-gem locales like Syros, which is famous for its neoclassical architecture, a buzzy main town, and (essentially) crowd-free beaches. The cruise also visits the serene resort town of Marmaris in Turkey before heading to its final port of call, Kos , a gorgeous Greek island known for its sandy beaches, white-washed buildings, and historical sites.

Celebrity Cruises

Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

According to Clabbers, " Celebrity Cruises was launched by a Greek shipping family," so the line has deep ties to — and many officers who hail from — the country. What’s more, he says, "When you visit Greece, they are taking you to their homeland, and it shows in their passion and love of the Hellenic nation." The line offers a range of larger ships and, thus, more options between accommodations (from economical inside rooms to luxurious suites in The Retreat), itineraries, restaurants, and entertainment; as such, Celebrity is "a great option for adults and families who like more activities on their ship."

Itinerary: The nine-night Best Of Greece itinerary cruises round-trip from Athens on select dates from May to October and takes place aboard the 2,170-passenger Celebrity Infinity , which Clabbers described as one of the line’s “smaller and more seasoned ships.” The first port of call is Santorini, followed by Ephesus in Turkey and Mykonos. “Additionally,” says Clabbers, " Infinity   travels to Volos and Thessaloniki, ports that are not typically visited by large ships.” Kavala, located in the northern part of the country, serves as the final port of call before heading back to Athens. Here, cruisers can enjoy a mix of history, culture, and architecture — plus some seriously stunning landscapes (from lagoons and lakes to wetlands and beaches) along with lush flora and fauna.

Courtesy of Silversea cruises

Silversea offers a variety of Greece cruise itineraries, and it’s one of few truly luxe all-inclusive cruise lines. Per Clabbers, the 596-passenger Silver Moon offers all-suite accommodations and a classic small-ship feel — complete with excellent meals, beverages, and shore excursions all included in your cruise fare. Speaking of the latter, he says, “The inclusion of shore excursions also makes it easy to dive deeper into Greek culture and culinary experiences.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Silversea’s Greek itineraries, Clabbers especially recommends the seven-night Athens to Athens cruise, which “calls on highlights, but adds places like Souda Bay in Crete, Nafplion, Patmos, and Rhodes ,” where he recommends visiting the “temple ruins at Lindos, with views over the Mediterranean, and then walk in the footsteps of the Crusaders in the old town.” The cruise also stops in Nafplion, which, despite its romantic seaside setting and lovely beaches, is yet to be uncovered by most American travelers — for now, at least.

Variety Cruises

According to T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist Mary Curry , this local Greek cruise line offers its own fleet of yachts, most carrying fewer than 50 passengers. Since the ships are so small, says Curry, “you can travel a bit further off the beaten path.” Variety offers a handful of Greece itineraries, including specially themed hiking and wine cruises.

Itinerary: Travelers craving a true off-the-beaten-path experience can book the seven-night Unexplored Greece voyage, which sails round-trip from Athens. The first port of call is Ikira, a tiny island known for its hot springs that also happens to be one of the world’s Blue Zones. Then, it’s off to Patmos, known for its fascinating history and unspoiled beaches, before overnighting in Lipsi, a laid-back isle famous for its gorgeous scenery. On board, guests can taste the destination’s famous wine, Aposperitis. The fun continues in Levintha, inhabited by a single family who raises animals and runs a restaurant where guests can enjoy fresh-caught fish. After, it’s off to Amorgos, where scenic hiking and beautiful beaches abound. The next day, you’ll stop at Panagia Hozoviotissa, a cliffside monastery dating back to the 10th century, before heading to Koufonisia, which boasts majestic caves and rock pools accessible only by boat (thankfully, Variety as you covered). The final stop of the day is the serene island of Iraklia, which offers clear-blue waters ideal for swimming. After remaining here overnight, you’ll head to the final port of call, Serifos, where guests can visit a remote beach, followed by an onboard BBQ feast to refuel before heading to Chora, a fairy-tale village.

Courtesy of Ponant Cruises

This French-owned cruise line offers an impressive fleet of small luxury ships. Additionally, says Curry, “Most cabins have private balconies, and travelers who plan early are rewarded with excellent value for the money.” What’s especially unique about Pontant, explains the pro, is that they “partner with Smithsonian Journeys on select departures to offer an enrichment program of included lectures and shore excursions in each port.”

Itinerary: Curry especially recommends the seven-night Cruising the Greek Islands of the Southern Aegean sailing, which will cruise round-trip from Athens in July and October 2025. The cruise calls on aforementioned spots like Patmos, Rhodes, and Amorgos before visiting Adamas in Milos, a volcanic island teeming with postcard-worthy white-washed towns and breathtakingly beautiful beaches. Adamas itself is a tiny fishing port where colorful boats shimmer against the blue waters. Finally, it’s off to Mykonos and Napflion before finally disembarking in Athens.

Disney Cruise Line

Courtesy of Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line is world-famous for its exciting onboard offerings for children of all ages — including character and superhero meet-and-greets, dining options themed after beloved Disney princesses, and live performances galore — making it a favorite for families hoping for a fun-filled Greece vacation.

Itinerary: "Setting sail aboard the Disney Dream on the seven-night Mediterranean with Greek Isles itinerary is nothing short of magical!" says Megan Guinnup , a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels . Cruising round-trip from Rome, the ship calls on Naples before exploring Greece. In addition to popular ports like Athens and Mykonos, you'll also visit Chania on the island of Crete, which offers a bustling harbor, exquisite architecture, and cobblestone streets that look like they were plucked straight from a (Disney) fairy tale. After exploring each locale, the fun continues back on board, where, per the pro, "there is enchantment everywhere — meeting beloved characters, enjoying deck parties with Mickey and Minnie, and indulging in exquisite cuisine."

Royal Caribbean

This mega-ship line truly has it all: Flashy entertainment and onboard activities — which, depending on the ship, can include everything from water slides to zip lines — and plenty of drinking and dining offerings to appease even the pickiest eaters. Guinnup and Kari Dillon, owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, recommend setting sail aboard Odyssey of the Seas , which offers several Greek itineraries. "On board," says Guinnup, "There's a plethora of activities to enjoy, from bumper cars and roller skating to exquisite dining and a bionic bar — there's something for everyone!"

Itinerary: The seven-night Greek Isles itinerary sails round-trip from Rome with stops in Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos, and Naples. Keep in mind that because the ship is so large, Santorini and Mykonos are both tender ports. With that in mind, Dillon recommends springing on The Key, an optional add-on that includes priority tender access so that you can spend as much time as possible on land basking in its beauty.

Virgin Voyages

Courtesy of Virgin Voyages

Richard Branson’s adults-only line has taken the industry by storm with its innovative offerings, including 20-plus restaurants instead of buffets, an onboard tattoo parlor, adult-focused entertainment offerings, and a two-story nightclub.

Itinerary: Dillon especially recommends the seven-night Greek Island Aglow itinerary for travelers seeking a high-energy, adults-only option. She continues, telling T+L, “Not only does this sail to the islands of Santorini and Rhodes, but it [also] has an overnight in Mykonos, which is world-famous for its lively party atmosphere.” As a bonus, the cruise also calls on Bodrum in Turkey, which boasts beautiful beaches, flower-filled cafes, and a bustling nightlife scene.

Celestyal Cruises

The Greece-based Celesytal Cruises prides itself on offering an authentic Greek vacation experience. Additionally, Celesytal is unique in that it offers year-round Aegean Sea sailings cruising round-trip from Athens and ranging in length from three to 14 nights. On land, Celeystal guests can choose from a selection of the line’s “Authentic Excursions,” which are specially curated, small-group, expert-led experiences designed to take travelers off the beaten path. Options — including walking food tours and pottery-making demos at a local factory — abound, depending on the particular port of call.

Itinerary: The seven-night Idyllic Aegean voyage visits Thessaloniki (which offers an eclectic combination of history, nightlife, and gastronomy), Kuşadası (a popular Turkish resort town), and Heraklion (the capital of Crete) before heading to iconic isles like Santorini and Mykonos, where the ship will remain overnight. Before returning to Athens for disembarkation, you’ll also stop in magnificent Milos.

Evergreen Island of Corfu

The blessed island of Corfu captivates visitors with its innumerable delights, inexhaustible nature, architectural wealth and refined character. Empress Elizabeth of Austria was so enamoured with the island that she build a mansion here to help her overcome her fragile health. Thus the Achilleion was built by two Italian architects in in 1890, although they drew their inspiration for ancient Pompeii. The edifice of the building is exceptional, regarded as one of the most impressive royal mansions in Europe. Empress Sissy dedicated the mansion to Achilles and decorated the yard with statues inspired by Greek mythology. Look out for the “Nine Muses” and the “Dying Achilles”. Next is cosmopolitan Kanoni which offers unique sunsets and an incredible view of Pontikonisi island and the pretty Vlacherna Monastery peninsula. Then on to the capital of Corfu, the delectable Old Town, where you will experience a unique atmosphere and marvel at the enigmatic buildings that preserve ancient Byzantine and Venetian craftsmanship together with two Old Fortresses that set the boundary with their monumental walls. The tour will bring you to the largest square in the Balkans, Spianada Square, the historical building of the British Governor, and the cultural meeting point of the Liston with its arched colonnade. The alleyways and the cobbled streets hide many surprises, squares, gardens, and neighbourhoods all waiting to be discovered...

Kotor Off Road Adventure

This is an excursion that gives you a great opportunity to combine asphalt and off road, to enjoy seaside as well as mountain scenery and to feel different climates, all in one day. It starts from Boka Bay and town of Kotor and it goes to the peaks of the mountain of Lovcen, which is a National park but also a very important historical place. Driving by the old serpentine road with its famous 25 curves will be a very important part of this excursion, because it gives you the most beautiful view on Boka bay, and then we arrive to Krstac. From this point we continue off road, towards the village Dolovi, where we stop to see one authentic Montenegrin place that kept its original aspect through the years. The road continues to Ivanova Korita and at the same time change from off road back to asphalt. Ivanova Korita is on 1270m above sea level. It got its name by the clear, healthy waters that come out of Trestenik peak and Ivan Crnojevic, the founder of Old capital of Montenegro, Cetinje. From this beautiful green valley we will go on with our journey up to the mountain Lovcen. Driving further up the slopes of this mountain, through contrast of nature surrounding, from lime stone rocky mountains called Sea of Stones, to the green valleys where the village Njegusi is situated. Njegusi is a very special place because of its well-reserved folk architecture, but also because it continues the traditions of Montenegrin cuisine to new heights. In Njegusi, you will find traditional farms for Njeguski sir and Njeguski prsut (cheese and prosciutto). Our journey will finish in Kotor by the same serpentine road from the beginning of this trip.

Adults: $148, Children: $117

Kotor Walking Tour

Established over two thousand years ago, Kotor is historically rich and has many stories to tell; from its ancient Roman beginnings, its struggle of the Middle Ages when ownership was acquired by the Goths, Saracens, Serbians and Venetians. With a history like this, it’s no surprise Kotor earns its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. And what better way to explore this fascinating city than with a guided walking tour? In every stone of its timeworn walls, on every fresco painting and every hidden alleyway, you’ll relive its glorious past. The old town center is still well preserved and the criss-crossed narrow streets and squares have monuments at every corner. From the Prince’s Palace and Napoleon’s Theatre to the most recognizable symbol of the city - the Romanesque Cathedral of Saint Tryphon – you’ll be mesmerized and intrigued. How many towns in this part of the world have preserved their fortifications from the middle Ages? Not many. But Kotor is one of the few. The chunky walls surrounding the old town are impressive to say the least - at some places they reach 20 meters in height and 16 meters in thickness. If you don’t believe us, you’ll have plenty of time to measure them during the extensive free time you’ll get here. Inside visits will be made to the Cathedral and the Maritime Museum in Kotor.

Historic Kotor & Budva

From the port, you will drive by coach directly to Budva to visit its stunning Old Town, one of the oldest settlements in the Balkans. The legend, confirmed by Greek mythology, says that Budva was established by Cadmo, the sun of the Phoenician, King Agenon in the 5th century BCE. The Old Town of Budva – a two millennia old town embedded in a small peninsula, a repository of cultural heritage. It is surrounded with the ramparts from the 15th century and intersected by narrow alleyways and bustling squares hosting a series of important monuments. Among the must-see monuments is the Church of St. Sava the Sanctified with its remnants of frescoes and inscriptions from the mid-12th century. Also look for the Church of the Holy Trinity, the Church of Santa Maria in Punta, and the town’s Fortress of Citadella. During the summer months, the square becomes an open-air Theatre, the location for many local and international performances. After a guided tour through the old town you will be given some free leisure time before returning to the old town of Kotor. With all its historical monuments offering great value, Kotor has been under UNESCO’s protection since 1980. During this visit, you will see the ancient Cathedral dedicated to St. Tryphon, constructed in 12th century. After this guided tour, you will have more free time to browse the boutiques or enjoy the bars and cafes. Return to the ship on foot of your own accord.

When war came in 1991, the cable car was destroyed and remained in disrepair until its recent restoration. Arriving at the top of Srdj hill, you will disembark the cable car and enjoy a short orientation before proceeding to the nearby War Museum, where you will learn about the 1990s invasion of Croatia by the Serbs and Montenegrins. After a pleasant stroll and a chance to enjoy some refreshments, you will take the Cable Car back and walk to the Ploce Gate, the eastern entrance to the Old City from where your city walking tour will start. Visit the Dominican Church, the 15th-century Rector’s Palace, the Church of St. Blaise, and the Cathedral, built on the remains of an earlier Cathedral that was destroyed in the earthquake of 1667. Another highlight is Sponza Palace, notable for its columned courtyard and elaborate stone carvings. Here, you will be invited to explore the interactive multimedia presentations that tell the story of Croatia’s earliest settlers and the founding of Dubrovnik. Take advantage of some free time to further explore Old Town Dubrovnik before returning to the ship.

Upon disembarkation, you will take a short bus ride to the Old Town and the famous main street, Stradun. Here you will have opportunity to explore the city with an experienced guide and discover the many delights the town has to offer. After your guided tour, you will have more free time to explore the city on your own before heading out to the green and fertile natural setting of the Konavle valley. Your first stop here tis the village of Komaji where the Crvik family have their vineyards and winery. Here, you will experience the unique opportunity to taste some of the finest wines from this region. After visiting Komaji village, you will be taken through the chain of villages toward Poljica to visit a typical country home. The family has lived in traditional fashion for generations, producing grape brandy, olive oil and wine in the same way as their ancestors. Introducing you to the tradition of the entire city, your host will serve you a snack that you can only be experienced in the homes of Balkan villages. Whilst you eat, you will be entertained with typical “Dalmatian” music and songs performed by groups of local musicians/singers. After the visit, your coach will take you back toward Dubrovnik.

Game of Thrones Locations Tour

The UNESCO-listed historical nucleus of Dubrovnik with its surrounding area has acted as the capital of the Seven Kingdoms written about in G.R.R. Martin’s books that have since been turned into the hit TV series, Game of Thrones. Climb the city forts to admire the views of the stunning Old Town and discover the King’s Landing, the Battle of Blackwater Bay, and the House of the Undying dungeon. The fort used as Red Keep hides has many stories of its own that blend perfectly with its more recent history. Your guide will tell you all about the marvels of the city, the fantasy world of the TV series and how the two live together. Once you have visited all the filming locations in the Old Town, you will continue to Lokrum Island where you can see the Iron Throne in the visitor’s center. Enjoy some free time to explore the island before returning to the boat ride back to the city and the coach trip to the port.

Dubrovnik Walking Tour

Depart Dubrovnik Harbour by coach towards Pile Square before disembarking briefly for a panoramic photo stop above the Old Town of Dubrovnik. Your guide will lead you through the charming streets and point out all the “hidden treasures” of the city together with a visit to the Dominican Monastery and the city Cathedral. The city itself is considered by many to be the most beautiful town on the Adriatic Sea. After the sightseeing tour, you will have some free time to explore this unique town on your own before the return transfer to the ship.

Adults: $58, Children: $37

Piazza San Marco & Palazzo Ducale (Half Day: Up to 4.5 hours)

From the ship, you walk a short distance along the quayside to join the local escort at the motor launch. You then be taken along the canals to St. Mark’s Basin. Regarded as one of the most impressive locations in Venice, St. Mark’s Square was the political and religious centre of the city when La Serenissima (the Republic of Venice) ruled an empire. Here, you meet with your guide who will take you on a visit to Doge’s Palace that housed the private residence of the Doge, the seat of government and the Court of Justice. The original palace was started in the Byzantine style during the 9th century and has been destroyed by fire several times during its history. The present palace was rebuilt in the Gothic style during the 14th century. Your guide will accompany you through the beautiful rooms and point out the most important ceiling decorations and famous paintings by the likes of Titian, Tiepolo, Tintoretto, Carpaccio and Veronese. You will also learn something of the history of Venice from the Barbarian invasion during the 5th century when the Veneto inhabitants were forced to take refuge among the lagoon islands until 1797, when the last Doge, Ludovico Manin, handed power over to the French. After leaving the Hall of Magistrates, you’ll walk over the Bridge of Sighs, a covered passageway over the canal which connects the palace and the ancient prison where Casanova bragged he escaped from. You will then stop in front of St. Mark’s Cathedral, a magnificent building with the plan of a Greek cross. The Cathedral façade shows the different architectural styles incorporated into the building. Above the main entrance are the Four Horses, bronze copies of those taken from the Byzantine Empire when the Crusaders sacked Constantinople in 1204. You will then have some free leisure time to do as you please before re-joining the motor launch and returning to the ship.

Island Tour (Half Day: Up to 4.5 hours)

This tour gives you an opportunity to explore two of the islands surrounding Venice. Leaving the pier by motor launch, you will cruise along the idyllic Giudecca Canal and the enigmatic lagoon to reach Murano, a glass manufacturing Mecca since 1291. The island became a sanctuary for glassmakers after furnaces were banned from Venice as a precaution against fire. It is here that you will witness masters of this delicate craft in action during a visit to a working factory. You will then proceed to Burano, a picturesque island dotted with brightly painted houses. Its fame is due to traditional lace making, an art still practised by many of the local women. Following your visit to the island of Burano, you will re-board the motor launch for the return journey.

Gondola ride

No visit to Venice would be complete without a ride on a gondola: you will ride through the magical canals of Venice and look at the light reflections glistening on the water. After reaching St Mark’s by motor launch, a short walk will take you to the gondola station; here you will board the gondola for a short ride along the narrow canals. The ride does not include the Canal Grande. After the gondola ride you will have time to explore the streets of Venice at your own pace. At the stated time, you will rejoin your escort at the motor launch waiting for the return trip to the port.

The Points Guy

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Viking cruise ship

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Fast-growing Viking has one of the most diverse arrays of itineraries of any cruise line.

Not only does the California-based company offer ocean cruises in almost every corner of the world, it also offers river cruises on many of the world’s major rivers.

That’s notably different from most cruise lines. Typically, cruise lines operate either ocean cruises or river cruises but not both. That gives them a smaller range of itineraries.

For more cruise guides, tips and news, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Viking has a particularly large footprint when it comes to European river itineraries, with a wide range of sailings on nearly every European river of any note, from the Douro in Portugal to (until recently) the Volga in Russia.

The company also operates river trips on the Nile in Egypt and the Mekong in Southeast Asia, and it just began river trips on the Mississippi River .

There are 80 river ships in Viking’s fleet — an astounding number. None of its main competitors among river lines catering to North Americans, which include Avalon Waterways, Uniworld and AmaWaterways , have anywhere near that number of vessels.

Related: First look at Viking’s stylish new Nile River ship

Among ocean cruise destinations, Viking has a major presence in Scandinavia and Northern Europe, which it considers its home turf. (The company was founded by a Norwegian family.) However, you’ll find Viking’s nine traditional ocean ships everywhere from North America to Asia and Australia.

Last year, the line began cruising to Antarctica with its first expedition ship — a type of vessel built specifically for travel to remote, hard-to-reach places. Viking now has two such vessels.

Among the line’s voyages, there’s everything from eight-day cruises in the Mediterranean to 138-day around-the-world voyages.

Overwhelmed with choices? Here are the five best Viking cruise destinations where the line can truly offer you a memorable vacation.

Scandinavia and Northern Europe

Some of Viking’s most interesting itineraries are around Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea, with many beginning or ending in Norway — the homeland of the company’s founder and chairman, Torstein Hagen.

As Hagen once told me, Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea are what the company considers “Viking country” — a region where it wants to dominate.

During summers, in particular, Viking devotes an unusually large number of its ships to itineraries around Scandinavia, the Baltic Sea and other Northern Europe destinations such as Iceland. Many, notably, use the relatively small but famously scenic Norwegian city of Bergen (population 286,000) as a gateway, something no other line is doing. That allows for unusual variations on the typical Baltic Sea or Norwegian fjords cruise.

The line’s most popular route in the region, “Viking Homelands,” is a two-week-long, one-way trip between Bergen and Stockholm that combines several days of exploring the fjord region of Norway’s west coast with more-typical Baltic cruise destinations such as St. Petersburg, Russia, and Helsinki.

Related: The ultimate guide to Viking ships and itineraries

Note that, in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Viking has pulled the St. Petersburg stop, as well as stops in Finland and Estonia from the Viking Homelands itinerary; the trips instead feature extra stops in Norway and Denmark. It’s unlikely St. Petersburg will return to the itinerary until the war in Ukraine is resolved.

Viking also offers a 14-night itinerary that includes several stops in the northernmost part of the country above the Arctic Circle. Dubbed “Into the Midnight Sun,” the one-way route between Bergen and London is unique because it combines calls in far-north Honningsvag and Tromso, Norway, with visits to Scotland’s remote Shetland Islands and the Orkney Islands. Though part of the United Kingdom, these archipelagos have ties to Norwegian and Viking history.

Itineraries that will take you from Bergen to Iceland or even as far away as France, Portugal and Spain also are available.

Viking’s Scandinavia and Northern Europe trips range widely in length from just seven nights to a whopping 28 nights.

Among the longest sailings that Viking offers that include calls in Northern Europe are one-way, 28-night voyages between Bergen and New York City. The trips include stops in Norway, Iceland, Greenland and Canada.

In Northern Europe, Viking ships mostly sail out of Bergen, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen and London as well as Reykjavik.

The Mediterranean

Viking has grown into a major player in Mediterranean sailings, with more than 30 distinct itineraries that include stops in the region.

The trips include voyages focused specifically on the Western Mediterranean or Eastern Mediterranean and some that include stops across both areas.

Typical of the latter is the line’s 14-night “Mediterranean Antiquities” routing, a one-way trip between Athens and Barcelona that stops in Greece, Turkey, Italy, Monaco, France and Spain.

More-focused Mediterranean itineraries include the line’s nine-night “Empires of the Mediterranean” voyages between Venice and Athens, which mostly concentrate on stops along the eastern side of the Adriatic Sea in Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro.

In the Mediterranean, the line’s main hubs are Barcelona; Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Venice, Italy; Piraeus (the port for Athens), Greece; and Istanbul.

Europe riverways

Viking is, quite simply, the giant of river cruising in Europe — at least among lines that cater to English speakers. The company operates around 70 river ships on a broad swath of the continent’s rivers — far more than any other river line catering to North Americans.

In all, the line accounts for about half of all river cruises taken by North Americans in the region. The next biggest player in Europe river cruises for North Americans, AmaWaterways, is less than half the size.

Among the rivers in Europe where Viking has a major presence are the Rhine, Main and Danube in Central Europe; the Seine, Rhone, Dordogne, Garonne and Gironde in France; the Douro in Portugal; and the Moselle and Elbe in Germany. Until recently, Viking also offered cruises on the Dnieper River in Ukraine. The voyages have been suspended since Russia invaded the country in early 2022.

On nearly all of the rivers, the line offers multiple itineraries with lengths ranging from seven nights to as many as 22 nights.

Among 10 different itineraries on the Rhine River alone, offerings range from a seven-night “Rhine Getaway” from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland, to a 22-night “European Sojourn” from Amsterdam to Bucharest, Romania. The latter adds travel on the Main and Danube rivers to days on the Rhine.

Viking offers some of the most intimate and elegant cruises on the Nile, with three ships including the recently unveiled, 82-passenger Viking Osiris — one of our favorite vessels on the river.

All three of Viking’s Nile ships operate the same seven-night Nile cruise itinerary that Viking pairs with a four-night stay at a hotel in Cairo (three nights before the cruise and one night after) to create an 11-night “Pharaohs and Pyramids” tour of Egypt.

Related: The ultimate guide to Viking’s loyalty program

The cruise portion of the tour includes visits to the historic temples of Luxor, Karnak, Esna, Dendera and Abu Simbel as well as a visit to the iconic Valley of the Kings. The stay in Cairo brings a visit to the pyramids of Giza, the Egyptian Museum and other sites.

Viking Osiris is the first of four sister ships that Viking plans to launch on the Nile by 2025 as it doubles its footprint in Egypt. The vessels offer a clean-lined, Scandinavian-influenced design that mimics the look of Viking’s Europe-based vessels.

Notably, the ship features an entire deck of sprawling suites that rival anything else found on the Nile for luxury and comfort. Each comes with two full-size rooms — a large living room with a residential feel and an adjacent bedroom with a walk-in closet and bathroom. Each suite also has an outdoor balcony with seating for two — something you don’t always see on Nile ships.

Viking is a newcomer to cruises to Antarctica, but the destination is a big growth area for the line. Viking recently added two new, 378-passenger expedition cruise vessels specifically built to travel to the White Continent.

Dubbed Viking Octantis, the first of these vessels began sailings to Antarctica in February 2022. The second ship in the series, Viking Polaris, has just joined its sister in Antarctica this year. Together, the two ships are already making waves in the market for Antarctica cruises, in part because they have several new and unusual features.

Most notable is The Hangar, an enclosed marina that allows passengers to transfer to two of each ship’s exploratory vessels while still in the protected interior of the ship. A first for an expedition ship, it’s something that is significantly improving the experience for passengers heading out on Antarctica exploration.

Related: The 3 types of Viking ships, explained

In another first for polar expedition cruise vessels, every cabin on both Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris has floor-to-ceiling glass walls that slide partially open from the top to create a balcony-like feel.

Viking offers several Antarctic itineraries, with the typical trip starting with a night at a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, before a flight to Ushuaia, Argentina, to board one of the two expedition ships for an 11-night cruise to Antarctica and back. A longer version of the trip features 13 nights on board one of the ships and extra days in Antarctica.

Viking also offers Antarctica sailings that combine a visit to the White Continent with stops in the Falkland Islands, Uruguay and Brazil.

Viking Octantis, notably, also operated Viking’s first sailings around the Great Lakes this year. In 2023, both Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris will spend their summers in the Great Lakes.
