“This was the first I had piloted during a solar eclipse, and I actually retire in 2040, so being in the front row was right at the top of the list for some of the best experiences I’ve had in the sky,” said Scott Bunch, Alaska Airlines first officer for Flight #322. “It was great teamwork from everybody involved. We had excellent dispatching that provided a route to keep the aircraft on the path of totality. Not only did we go through the darkness from the moon passing in front of the sun, but we also stayed in it. I was ecstatic.”

My Experience Using Qantas Staff Travel: Pros and Cons

By knbbs-sharer

qantas.com staff travel

As an avid traveler, I am always on the lookout for ways to save on travel expenses. One option that I recently explored was utilizing Qantas Staff Travel benefits, available to friends and family of Qantas employees. Here are my thoughts on the pros and cons of using this travel option.

1. Affordable Prices: One of the biggest advantages of Qantas Staff Travel is the low prices. I was able to get steep discounts on both domestic and international flights, which made traveling much more accessible.

2. Availability: Another advantage of Staff Travel is the availability of flights. While sometimes there may be blackout dates, for the most part, I was able to book the flights I wanted with relative ease.

3. Priority Check-In: Staff Travel passengers receive priority check-in, meaning I was able to skip the long lines at the airport. This allowed me to save time and get through security quicker.

1. Limited Seat Availability: While I was able to get most of the flights I wanted, there were occasions where flights were fully booked, and I was unable to secure a seat. This can be frustrating when planning travels, as I need to be prepared to make alternative arrangements if needed.

2. Uncertainty: Unlike regular passenger tickets, Qantas Staff Travel seats are subject to cancellation or adjustment with very little notice. This can be challenging when trying to plan travel arrangements, as I may need to make last-minute changes in my itinerary.

3. Restrictions: Another drawback of staff travel is that it comes with restrictions. For example, I had to be accompanied by a Qantas employee if traveling internationally, which limited my flexibility in terms of travel dates and locations.

In conclusion, my experience using Qantas Staff Travel had both pros and cons. The low prices, availability, and priority check-in were definite benefits. However, the limited availability of seats, uncertainty, and restrictions were drawbacks that made me hesitate to rely solely on staff travel for all future travel needs. Despite the drawbacks, I would still recommend staff travel as a money-saving option for friends and family of Qantas employees.

Qantas staff to return to work before Christmas as nationwide restart of international travel begins

Qantas is preparing for a nationwide restart from December 21, with all its crews to be back to work before Christmas.

Key points:

  • More than 10,000 Qantas staff will return to work by December 21
  • Several international routes are being restarted ahead of schedule
  • Domestic routes are also being resumed as state borders reopen

New South Wales opens its borders to the world from November 1, and the carrier has announced several international routes will restart sooner than expected, with Delhi, Singapore, Fiji, Johannesburg, Bangkok and Phuket among the earliest to open up.

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said a Qantas Dreamliner would depart from Sydney to Darwin on its way to London on November 1, the airline's first regular long-haul flight since March last year.

"[It is] probably the biggest and the best news we've had for two years," Mr Joyce said.

"This 20 months is probably the darkest period in Qantas's 100-year history."

A man in hazmat gear sprays disinfectant on the cabin of a plane

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said rising vaccination rates meant Australia was "ready for take off".

"The national plan was all about opening up Australia safely so we can remain safely open, and that is what we are seeing here today," Mr Morrison said.

International flights will initially be restricted to citizens, permanent residents and their immediate families.

But Mr Morrison said he expected travel to quickly open up for other groups, with students and business travellers next in the queue, followed by skilled migrants and then international tourists.

"I am confident that because of the way we have prepared for this day, that is very possible and very achievable by the end of the year," Mr Morrison said.

Crews return to work

Six thousand Qantas staff in jobs linked to international flights were stood down during the pandemic, along with 5,000 domestic flight workers.

Mr Joyce said those domestic crews would also soon be back to work as interstate travel resumed.

Travel between states and territories is expected to resume in line with border restrictions being lifted.

Qantas has faced repeated criticism throughout the pandemic over its staffing decisions, including outsourcing ground crews while receiving government support to retain staff.

Earlier this week,  Qantas was charged for allegedly standing down a worker at the start of the pandemic who had directed staff to "cease unsafe work" because he said they did not have adequate protective equipment while cleaning planes.

Qantas has said its employees were provided the necessary protective equipment.

StaffTraveler

Insider knowledge

What is staff travel, what does staff travel mean.

Staff travel is a benefit for (retired) airline employees, travel industry employees, their family members or close friends (often called "buddy passes"). Staff travel tickets can be purchased at a fraction of the costs of a standard ticket, but are only granted if there are unsold seats available. They are used extensively throughout the airline industry.

How to get the seat availability?

You came to the right place! We have created the StaffTraveler app to enable you to check the loads for the flights you wish to travel on. With our advanced flight search engine, you can easily find the perfect flights to your destination. With one tap, you can request the loads of all the possible flights. People at the airlines you wish to travel with will answer your requests, enabling you to choose the perfect route and time to travel. Join our  790,000 members  from over  1,000 airlines  today.

What are non-rev passengers?

Non-rev passengers (also referred to as standby passengers or nonrevs) are passengers who fly on discount tickets. These tickets are sometimes called ID90 (for 90% discount) or ZED (for Zonal Employee Discount) tickets. In other words: non-rev passengers are passengers who are not producing revenue for the airline.

See below for the benefits and downsides of staff travel tickets.

Who can staff travel?

People who work for an airline often have the benefit of being eligible for staff travel. Depending on their airline's policy, their family members and friends can join them on their flights for the same, low fee.

Please  let us know  if you have a more accurate estimate.

What are the benefits of staff travel?

Freedom and flexibility! That is how most airline employees would praise staff travel. We can travel the world at severely reduced prices. Also, we can change our plans at any time as staff travel tickets are as flexible as it gets: they're valid for months and can be cancelled for free.

What are the downsides of staff travel?

Uncertainty. If the flight is full, we don't get on board. Often, this is decided at the very last moment. On busy routes, flights may be overbooked for days.

At StaffTraveler, we decided to make your staff travel trips easier and less stressful by getting you in touch with the people who can look up the number of available seats. For the first time, you can accurately estimate your chances of getting onboard, by having access to accurate, reliable flight loads.

Can I staff travel on all airlines?

Depending on your airline's agreements with other airlines, there may be many other airlines that you can purchase staff travel tickets for. Please check with your airline which agreements they have made.

How to book a staff travel ticket?

This depends on your airline. myIDTravel is a popular choice for airlines, but your airline might have a proprietary system. Please ask your airline if you are unsure about booking your staff travel tickets.

Please note that myIDTravel indicates the loads in a funny way, based on smileys. These indications are not exact and have proven to be unreliable. We've got your back: you can request exact and reliable flight loads with our StaffTraveler app.

Where can I download the StaffTraveler app?

You can download the StaffTraveler app in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. We hope you'll like it!

Where can I get non-rev information for the airline that I'm flying with?

Many airlines have their own specific rules and procedures when it comes to ID90 passengers. StaffTraveler has a large database with airline-specific, ID90 related information. You'll find these in the StaffTraveler app and in the online StaffTraveler Airline Notes.

Some more airline jargon please!

Melbourne Airport has been named the best in Australia and the Pacific for the second year in a row.

The bustling airport was awarded the sought-after title at the 2024 Skytrax World Airport Awards held in Frankfurt, Germany overnight.

On a global scale, Melbourne was ranked 19th on the prestigious list of the world’s top 100 airports .

Melbourne Airport chief executive Lorie Argus credited her team’s “focus on human interaction” and new amenities and dining and shopping options that opened in the last 12 months.

“Whether you work as the CEO or a cleaner, in customer service or in construction, everyone at Melbourne Airport is committed to enhancing our travellers’ journeys,” she said.

“Our ‘Stepping Forward’ program empowers all airport staff to assist passengers wherever they can, and we think that focus on human interaction is what sets us apart.”

Ms Argus said there were big improvements yet to come including a new runway, new roads and other terminal enhancements.

“We know there is still a lot of work to do, particularly in our international arrivals area, and that’s why we are working with our airline partners on future infrastructure plans, including an expanded international terminal and our third runway,” she said.

“There will be disruptions while we complete these works, but they are essential projects that will ensure we continue to grow in line with our city, and that we remain Australia’s favourite airport destination.”

One of those projects, which changes how Qantas domestic passengers use the airport, has kicked off this week (more on that below).

At the 2024 ceremony overnight, Adelaide Airport received the award for ‘best regional airport’ in Australia and the Pacific, and Perth Airport accepted the gong for ‘best airport staff service’ in Australia and the Pacific.

On the world list, Brisbane took out spot 32, Perth was ranked 52nd, Sydney was 55th, Adelaide was 65th and Gold Coast was 68th.

Doha’s Hamad International Airport was ranked the best in the world, booting Singapore Changi Airport from the top spot this year, which has previously won 12 times.

South Korea’s Incheon International Airport was ranked third best, followed by Haneda Airport and Narita International Airport, both in Japan’s capital, Tokyo.

Haneda Airport was also awarded world’s cleanest airport, while Narita Airport has the world’s best staff.

The Skytrax World Airport Awards have been going since 1999 and are determined by passengers in an annual global airport customer satisfaction survey, assessing customer service and facilities across more than 570 airports.

The questionnaires were completed by more than 100 nationalities from August 2023 to March 2024.

The Skytrax World Airline Awards, dubbed “the Oscars of the aviation industry”, are announced mid-year and dished up a sad result for Australia last year .

Qantas was considered the fifth-best airline in the world in 2022 but plummeted 12 spots to be ranked 17 in 2023.

Australia’s largest carrier also lost the title of ‘Best Airline in Australia / Pacific’ to Fiji Airways.

Changes at Qantas’ domestic terminal at Melbourne Airport

This year’s win for Melbourne Airport comes in the same week a major upgrade of security screening technology begins at Qantas’ domestic terminal.

The screening point will be rebuilt with new baggage screening and body scanning technology to bring it into line with Melbourne Airport’s other domestic terminals.

Construction of a new temporary screening point at the eastern end of the Qantas domestic terminal started this week and it will open in August, meaning passengers will no longer need to remove laptops, tablets or aerosols from their carry-on luggage.

The security upgrade is expected to be finished by December 2025.

Melbourne Airport chief of aviation Jim Parashos asked for patience while they finished transforming the terminal “into one of the best domestic facilities in the world”.

“We have also spent tens of millions of dollars upgrading passenger amenities to increase their capacity, and improve accessibility, including the installation of adult change facilities, all gender bathrooms and assistance animal relief areas,” he said, adding the latest works were the “next piece of the puzzle”.

Mr Parashos warned: “Installing this new security equipment while keeping the terminal operational is a significant logistics challenge, and we thank passengers for their patience and understanding while we undertake this work.”

The project is expected to be completed by December 2025.
