Portable Bluetooth Speaker

Portable speakers are a must-have item when traveling. They’re small enough to fit into any bag or backpack but still sound amazing. The Dosmix Wireless Stereo looks like a retro radio but delivers modern, high-quality sound. It has a built-in microphone to take calls while listening to music and a 2-3 hours per charge battery life.

Fold Up Travel Duffel

There are many options out there for duffels, backpacks, and messenger bags. But if you want something that folds down to be as compact as possible, then look no further than this foldable travel duffel . You can store everything inside, plus it’s made to fit the personal item size requirement for strict airlines.

Travel Documents Holder

These days, carrying essential travel documents means more than just a passport. Now, we have COVID vaccination records, Global Entry IDs, and other papers we need on hand. This personalized travel documents holder has slots for all of your important documents, including your passport.

Crossbody Phone Purse

Crossbody purses are a classic accessory for women everywhere. And with a crossbody purse, you don’t have to worry about where your phone ends up. This particular purse features a specific slot that fits all major phone models, so you never have to worry about misplacing your cell.

Similar to the slightly pricer Apple AirTags (which is a great gift for friends moving overseas ,) a Tile Mate is a simple way to track an item’s location. With this Tile Mate , you can attach it to your keys or anywhere else you’d usually worry about losing. Once paired with your smartphone, you can see exactly where your belongings are at all times.

Anker Power Bank

A portable power bank is one of the most essential travel accessories under $20 I carry around. My Anker power bank is easy to use, durable and can recharge my phone several times on a single charge.

Portable Mini Humidifier

If your friend becomes dehydrated easily, a portable mini humidifier is the answer. This mini humidifier has two different use modes, an automatic shut-off and soft light for nighttime use. Keep the air they’re breathing in hydrated!

Passport Holder

Part passport holder and personalized leather wallet, its high-quality and sleek design make this a great travel gift under $20 for the men in your life.

Bamboo Cutlery Set

One of my favorite zero-waste travel essentials is reusable cutlery. This set includes a complete set of utensils, as well as chopsticks and a straw–it’ll last years if cared for properly.

Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are a great way to organize your clothing before packing them away. This set comes with six individual compartments that make it easier to find what you’re looking for.

Personalized Luggage Tags

A personalized luggage tag makes for a great gift idea for anyone who travels frequently. The tag comes attached to a keychain and has a place to write their name inside, just in case their bag doesn’t arrive at their destination.

Essential Oil Diffuser

If your giftee loves essential oils, give them a travel-sized essential oil diffuser! They’re such an easy way to add some scent into any room without having to spend a fortune on scented candles or lotions.

Universal Waterproof Cellphone Pouch

This is one of those great travel gifts under 20 for anyone who likes to keep their cell phone safe and dry while out and about. This pouch fits pretty much every standard-size phone and is made of durable clear material, so it is still functional without needing to take it out.

Pour Over Coffee Travel Mug

This is an excellent gift for coffee lovers, and it’s also a perfect way to make sure that your favorite beverage stays hot or cold as long as possible! The Pour Over Coffee Travel Mug holds up to 12 ounces of liquid, so you can enjoy your morning cup of joe without worrying about spillage. It comes with a lid and a straw, making it easy to drink from while traveling.

Travel Pillow

If your traveler has trouble sleeping on planes, then they’ll love using their new travel “pillow.” This neck wrap comes with a soft microfiber cover and helps support the neck to get some good sleep in the air. Plus, it folds down very small. It’s machine washable and available in six different colors.

Quick Dry Mircofiber Towel

I have a few of these in different colors, and they are great for travelers to have on hand. They dry quickly, are very soft, and don’t take up much room, which means there’s almost always room in their luggage for it to fit.

Electronics Travel Organizer

This is so helpful when traveling! If you have someone in your life who is constantly losing important charging cords or adapters, this is the gift for them. There are enough slots and pockets to perfectly organize all of the charging cords for the precious electronics we can’t leave home without!

Mini Wireless Bluetooth Receiver

A wireless Bluetooth receiver turns a wired headphone port into one that will work with wireless headphones. Think–using your AirPods on an airplane! Since so many people exclusively use wireless headphones now, this little inexpensive gift will come in handy more often than you think!

Reusable Fabric Tote Bag with Wheels

If someone in your life loves to travel but doesn’t want to carry around their bag, then they need a tote bag like this one . This fabric tote is spacious enough for a large grocery haul, and if it’s too heavy, it also has wheels!

The Original Portable Door Lock

Another one of my favorite self-defense products is a portable door lock. This thin mechanism can be thrown into any travel bag and is extremely effective at locking any standard door from the inside, so no one unwanted can get inside.

Need more inspiration? Check out my guides on the best travel essentials for women , zero-waste travel essentials , and great gifts for friends going abroad !

TSA-approved Luggage Locks

These TSA-approved luggage locks are perfect for keeping your valuables safe while traveling. You can choose between a key lock, combination lock, padlock, and even a cable lock.

Sabre Self-Defense Kit

Maintaining my personal safety is one of the most important elements of traveling. Sabre is one of the most reputable companies for self-defense products, with very affordable options. Their compact kit is a combined red pepper spray and a stun gun with a built-in flashlight.

Set Your Own Combination Portable Safe

With this portable safe , belongings can stay safe anywhere. Simply attach the MasterLock safe to any fixed object with a strong cable to keep your valuables safe. The lockbox is waterproof and surrounded on the inside with a thick foam.

Travel Journal

In addition to writing them here on The Purposely Lost, I love writing down my travel adventures. This is a great idea if you know your traveler really enjoys journaling. Everyone needs a place to write down ideas and thoughts while traveling, and a beautiful notebook is a great way to do just that.

Travel Clean Kit

travel gifts under $20

Since the Covid-19 epidemic, frequent travelers have been more aware of the microorganisms and viruses they’re exposed to when in public. Each Travel Clean Kit comes with a single-use seat cover, face mask, sanitizing antiseptic wipes, and shoe coverings, making it a lightweight present that will prepare your friend for congested travel surroundings.

Custom Vintage Map Print

If they’re a history buff at heart, print them a vintage map of their favorite place! Whether it’s their hometown, a favorite city, or somewhere else, a custom map in a vintage style will be an awesome gift under $20 for any traveler.

USB Multiport Charging Station

This is a great gift for anyone who travels often and needs to charge multiple devices at once. This one has ten USB ports! Never again will they have to make the hard decision of which device to charge.

Travel Yoga Mat

If your favorite traveler loves fitness, then you should consider getting them a travel yoga mat. Where traditional yoga mats are bulky and hard to fold, these travel yoga mats are lightweight, compact, and designed to fold flat. I’ve had a few of these over the years, and they’re great for traveling.

Travel Tripod

Travelers need to be able to capture every moment of their trip. Whether they’re taking photos or videos, having a sturdy tripod is essential to capturing a great shot, especially if traveling alone and they want to be in their pictures. This travel tripod is lightweight and folds up small enough to fit in a standard day bag.

Poster-sized Travel Photo Print

Travelers bring back more than just their memories–they also bring home a ton of pictures. Especially if they’re proud of their photography, surprise your giftee with a poster-sized print of one of their beautiful travel shots. If you want to go the extra mile, I have a whole guide to creating a travel photo book with Mixbook , a company that makes high-quality poster prints, photo books, and personalized photo home decor.

Mini Flashlight

For those times when you need to find your way around at night, a mini flashlight is a lifesaver. It’s small and easy to carry around but still packs a big punch.

Emergency Travel Kit

Everyone should have an emergency kit on hand when they travel. This kit includes items like water purification tablets, first aid kits, batteries, and fire starters. These are all things you may not think of until you’re actually stranded somewhere without access to basic supplies.

Steamfast Mini Steam Iron

Honestly, a wrinkle-release spray will only take your clothes so far. When it comes to wrinkles, there’s no replacement for ironing. With so many options out there for travel irons, steam irons tend to get overlooked. But, they’re perfect for packing into your suitcase because they don’t take up much space. The Steamfast Mini has it all right there in its name–it’s a steam iron and will eliminate wrinkles in clothes fast!

Digital Luggage Scale

Did you know that there are handheld digital luggage scales? This is definitely one of the best travel gifts under $20 for a frequent flyer. I bring mine everywhere I travel, and it’s been a lifesaver in avoiding any unwanted overweight baggage fee by knowing the weight of my luggage before letting it through security.

Jewelry Organizer

Sometimes, the best travel accessories are the accessories! Just because someone is traveling doesn’t mean they don’t want to mix and match their jewelry favorites. A jewelry organizer makes sure everything stays together while keeping it safe from damage. This is the one I use when I’m abroad, and it’s excellent for my needs.

Stainless Steel Travel Mug

Travel mugs are useful because they’re lightweight, compact, and keep beverages hot or cold longer than other containers. S’well is my favorite brand for stainless steel water bottles, and now I love their travel mugs!

Sleeping Mask

Sleeping masks are a great gift for any traveler who has trouble sleeping on trains or planes. They reduce ambient light to help improve sleep quality, even in tough sleeping environments.

Collapsible Water Bottle

I love these collapsible water bottles; they’re great for road trips and air travel since they can be made smaller to conserve space when they’re not filled! This one folds down so it’s almost flat, and it’s also very durable–you can even freeze it.

Cadbury British Chocolate Bars

This affordable gift comes with ten full-sized Cadbury chocolate bars from the United Kingdom, already packed in a perfect box for presentation. It’s is such a fun gift for a jet setter with a sweet tooth!

These Marchway water-resistant bags come in five different sizes and several colors. I have a few of these, and they are perfect for protecting belongings when around water. It can even be used as a floating bag when swimming or diving!

28 Useful Travel Gifts Under $20

Upgrade their travel game with these gifts that will keep on giving.

1. A  travel wallet  that'll have them feeling like a seasoned traveler with everything organized. This wristlet helps them quickly locate their documents so they don't hold up the loooong check-in line. With pockets for their passport, cash, ID cards, and boarding passes, they'll never have to worry about losing or misplacing anything again.

reviewer image of the orange wallet

Promising review: "I absolutely love this wallet. I needed a new travel wallet, and this holds everything I need all in one place, and it still closes nicely and stays flat! I can fit my boarding pass, passport, ID, credit cards, money, checked baggage tickets, receipts, and more in it, yet it doesn’t bulk up or look like an overstuffed mess. It's just amazing. The description says it only holds US money, but I just used the boarding pass flap to hold all my Japanese Yen (¥), which are larger. I didn’t use the zippered pocket for coins as I much prefer a separate coin purse for that sort of thing. I definitely recommend to anyone who travels a lot!" — Anthony Luu

reviewer's phone mounted on the back of an airplane seat

Promising review: "Okay, after a flight last month, I was convinced I needed a phone mount and ran into this. So I bought it. The wild part was that I haven’t been on another flight yet and yet, I use this gadget every single day.  So far, I found this to be durable and can contort to your needs. The different combinations of positions literally allows you to mount and position your device to nearly any position you need it to. I use the iPhone 11 as my device. I mount this on my standup desk at work, at my nightstand to watch movies while in bed, on my treadmill so I could watch something while walking , on a nearby counter as a tripod for my phone and of course, as a standalone stand when I’m sitting at a flat table." — Justine E.

Promising review: "This was a LIFESAVER while traveling. I kept my cards and cash in it and had no stress about thieves lifting my essentials while traveling heavily pickpocketed cities. I loved it so much, I actually continued to use it when I got home instead of carrying a purse! The top flap did start to unravel after about six months but this was also after six months of everyday use." — Krista Hinz

Get it from Amazon for $16.45+ (available in three colors).

6. Or, a more accessible but sneaky  money belt  with a hidden zippered pocket to stash extra money, allowing them to move around more freely and comfortably knowing that their valuables are protected.

person holding a $100 note in the concealed zipper belt

Promising review: "I purchased this for a trip to Cuba where I needed to carry all of the money I needed for that week in cash. Although I am not typically worried/normally cautious when traveling, the idea of carrying that much cash on me made me nervous. Traditional money belts/fanny packs just didn't seem like a fit for me. I was worried they would become uncomfortable in the hot sun. This security belt was perfect. It allowed us to carry most of they money for the trip hidden within the belt and carry in my purse the money I needed for that day. It also worked like a breeze with no issues getting through security. I'm not sure how much I'll use this in the future, but it was perfect for our needs." — fendi

You can throw your key in there, etc. I also keep a lip gloss with me often (though not usually when running) so you could stow a small one in there. I bought several of these and I will give some to my daughter (though I want to keep them all, lol)." — Nurserunner

the reviewer pouch with electronic's cords and a passport

Get it from Amazon for $9.84+  (available in six colors).

11. A heat-resistant silicone mat  perfect for the jet-setting family member who loves to stay stylish on the go. the earplugs

Promising review: "I love this product! Every couple of trips, no matter what tricks I try, I cannot clear my ears. The ear pain is immense at takeoff (I completely understand why those babies and toddlers wail!), and then I'm hard of hearing for days. With these, that has never happened. A few other people near me had ear pain and I did not, so I was very grateful I'd bought this product." — Amy Clark

Get them from Amazon for $7.50 .

reviewer before and after

Promising reviews: "With three weeks of international travel coming up, I purchased these to combat swelling in my feet during the flights. I had noticed swelling after three hour domestic flights, so I was worried about what almost 30k miles would do! I wore these on every leg of the trip and never noticed any swelling — even after the 10- to 15-hour flights. They are very comfortable, too!" — J. Beaty

"Highly recommended. I am currently eight months pregnant and wear these beauties every single day. I come home from work, take them off, wash them, and hang them to dry for the next day. I never knew how painful the swelling in my legs and feet could be until recently, and these socks were a complete game changer. I stand for over nine hours a day at work, so I can't begin to explain how badly my legs and feet ached. I have a picture of what my feet looked like with (right) and without using the socks (left). The difference is tremendous!!" — OStocky

Knowing we had several long flights, layovers, and train/taxi rides in our future, we figured it would be best to keep something on hand to stay fresh. We chose these because the wipes are individually wrapped, compact, and we could split them up between the two of us. They were perfect! They helped freshen us up after our long plane rides and made us feel clean and smelling good. I keep an extra in my purse now because you never know when you'll need to freshen up. I highly recommend these." — Lisa

20. A jewelry organizer  to keep all their dainty chains and elaborate earrings organized and tangle-free, especially the new ones Santa brings them!

Promising review: "I would give this more stars if I could. It's exactly what I've been looking for forever!!! It has plenty of room for my clunky jewelry, and enough separate pouches that things don't get tangled. I LOVE it." — Carrie Minturn

Get it from Amazon for $9.09+  (available in blue and pink).

21. An unassuming  buckled luggage strap  which might not look like much, but even  flight attendants   swear by them. They can use it to strap their coat or personal bag to their luggage so they don't have to carry it around, freeing their hands to grab a cup of coffee from Dunkin'.

Promising review: "I love this little gadget. I used it to attach my jacket and computer bag to my luggage on an extended business trip. It made my airport walks so much easier. Now that I'm back home, I've been using it daily to attach my jacket or cardigan to my work bag or purse." — Michele

Get it from Amazon for $8.49+ (available in seven colors and packs of two).

22. A portable door lock  for instant added security when they they travel alone. It may help keep them safer when they’re miles away — this easy-to-install lock simply slips onto the door latch and, voilà, peace of mind.

Note: This can get flagged when going through security, so they may want to put it in an easily accessible place in their checked bag to be safe.

Promising review: "I travel a lot for work and usually take a lot of measures for extra security, such as keeping the luggage roller in my room all week and rolling it in front of the door. It was large and cumbersome, but with this gadget, it's great! You can use it on almost any door and works better than the makeshift 'fork' one. Frequent traveler or not, this item offers peace of mind which can prove invaluable while away from home. (I can even use it on my door at my house!)" — Deactivated

Get it from Amazon for $14.99+  (also available in two and four-packs).

23. A designated dirty laundry bag , to keep their dirty clothes in order and away from clean clothes. This little bag starts out cute and compact but can expand big enough to fit a week's worth of clothes in. Once it is not in use, reviewers say it easily folds back into its original size.

Promising review: "I love this bag for travel. It's the perfect size. Unlike so many travel laundry bags, this one is the perfect size for clothes and undies. So many are too small like a lingerie bag or too big like a bag to take to the laundromat. This is cute and folds up into itself." — N. Newman

Get it from Amazon for $9.35+ (available in seven styles).

24. A simple yet remarkable felt insert  they'll be over the moon with excitement and gratitude for. This handy dandy insert is perfect for keeping all of their travel essentials neat and organized in their carry on. It has a number of compartments and pockets so they'll never have to worry about losing anything in the depths of their bag again.

the large pink insert inside a LV Neverfull MM bag

And this comes in so many shades they'll easily find one to match the interior of any of their bags!

Promising review: "When you spend a LOT of money on a good bag, the last thing you need is a pen to leak or a dirty mark to ruin the lining. I couldn’t believe my luck when I discovered the EXACT product I was thinking of right here. I have the Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM with a light pink lining I wanted to protect, and right here a pink liner fits perfectly. You can remove the middle section if you wish, to hold more books, folder etc or keep it in (it has hook and loop strips at each end to hold it in place). I love that everything has a place, including a zipped compartment and the key strap lanyard, and of course if you want to change bags you can just lift it out and place all those essentials right into another. Highly recommend this item." — BritGirlUSA

Get it from Amazon for $11.99+ (available in sizes S–XL and 23 colors).

25. A compact and quick-drying microfiber towel  that's so versatile they'll wonder how they made it this long without it. It doesn't take up too much space, is super absorbent, dries fast, and can be used for anything like camping trips to beach days.

Promising review: "I took this towel on a two-week trip through Austria and Slovakia, and I am SO glad I did. It was perfect: it didn't take up much space, and it dried SUPER quickly. If you are a backpacker or even just a casual traveler, this thing is made for you! Also, I bought the lime green color which made it VERY easy for me to find my towel." — brandon short

Get it from Amazon for $8.99+ (available in XS–XXL and 11 colors).

hand holding the balm

Promising review: "I purchased two of these for our one-week Disney World trip. I knew I’d be walking around A LOT, and my feet aren’t used to the many miles of walking a day in the hot and humid environment, so I didn’t want to be uncomfortable. I'm happy to say I put it on once in the morning, slipped on some socks and comfy shoes, and I didn’t get one blister or issue with my feet! I wish I knew about this a long time ago!" — Michelle

Get it from Amazon for $8.99 .

27. A travel toothbrush  that is functional enough to keep up with their on-the-go dental hygiene needs. With its folding design, this toothbrush easily fits into any travel bag or purse making it a must-have for any frequent flyer.

the foldable toothbrush

Promising review: "These are great! I travel around a lot for work, and also have Invisalign, so I like to keep one in my work bag as well as my travel bag. The best part is the convenience. I used to carry a toothbrush in a case that took up a lot of room in my work bag as well as my travel bag. Now I just use these. They are small, durable, easy to use, and the brush is full covered when it is fully closed, which is what I was a little worried about at first. It was exactly what I was looking for in a travel toothbrush. I highly recommend, and I will be purchasing again." — Demetri

reviewer hand holding the pouch of silicone containers

And they come with a handy, clear zipper pouch!

Promising review: "Just took a trip to the Dominican Republic and used carry-on luggage only throughout the entire trip, never once was questioned about the size. The bag they are in seems thin but it worked great to put bottles back in and some smaller items fit in the bag too, like lip gloss, mascara and such. The holes are big enough to get your product in to the bottles without any complications. My fiancé and I had plenty of shampoo, conditioner, sunblock and lotion for seven days. Highly recommend these bottles, they are perfect for carry-ons!!" — Stephanie Miller

Durotag stainless steel luggage tags.

travel gifts under $20

These luggage tags are just so cool. They’re stainless steel and come with a stainless steel loop wrap. You fill out a card with your information and slip it inside. These are great because they’re not the flimsy airline ones, and they’re not the plastic version that bends or breaks the first time you use it. These luggage tags last!  These unique travel gifts are perfect air travel accessories, and I always use two–one for my carry-on and one for my checked bag.

Etekcity Digital Hanging Luggage Scale

travel gifts under $20

I love my luggage weigher–is that a word?! Jokes aside, I can pack a ton of stuff in a small suitcase. While it’s a great skill to have, it means I’m usually overweight at the airport.

This little gadget prevents that embarrassing airport scenario. You know the one where you end up transferring your underwear into two different suitcases in front of dozens of strangers. Get this luggage scale and you’ll never have to face that uncomfortable situation again. This is a great travel gift for her.

Human Gear Go Toobs

travel gifts under $20

I can’t live without these! In the U.S. you can only take 3oz of liquids with you in a carry-on bag. These actually give you an extra .4 oz., for a total of 3.4oz or 100ml. But they’re still TSA friendly.

Also, I love the huge hole that makes filling it up easy. And they’re squeezable! You don’t have to shake the contents and hit them on the shower wall to squeeze out the last drop…no wasted product.  These are super cool travel gifts!

It’s so easy to pack your favorite shampoo, conditioner, or lotion with these toiletry tubes. This is a fantastic travel gift idea for your girlfriends who are very particular about their hair products. You know the ones who would never allow hotel shampoo on their heads.

They keep your product safe too. I’ve never had one leak. They are a must have for any traveler!

NewNomad Premium Passport Wallet

travel gifts under $20

This perfectly-sized travel wallet holds travel documents, credit cards, and itineraries. It also features RFID blocking technology. That means no thieves or hackers can scan your wallet for personal info or card numbers. RFID protection is one of the best ways to prevent identity theft.

In regards to the wallet’s design, I just love how thin it is. The size and the space are absolutely fantastic. It’s the perfect traveler’s wallet. And, it’s unisex. What a great travel gift idea!

If you or someone you love has to travel with multiple passports, this wallet is a great choice. It easily accommodates up to 4 passports, and it is a perfect gift for world travelers. I love this wallet so much and it’s actually under $10!

Lewis N. Clark Travel Comfort Eye Mask

travel gifts under $20

This travel eye mask completely blocks out all the light. It’s like a pair of blackout curtains for your eyes. The cheaper eye masks let light filter in by the nose or under your eyes, but not these ones by Lewis N Clark.  The product description says it’s for men, but I find it’s a perfect fit for me as well.

They’re also adjustable so they can fit everyone from a big and tall guy to a petite woman. No need to worry sizing for this cool travel gift. These soft, comfortable, and machine-washable eye masks are great gifts for anyone going traveling.

Grip 6 SMD LED Pocket Light

travel gifts under $20

I use this light all the time for taking pictures while traveling. Yes, I have a head torch. But, it’s not exactly appropriate to put that on in the middle of dinner at a Michelin starred restaurant. This is such a unique travel gift to give someone who is traveling abroad and loves to take photos in dark lighting.

Just beware. This unqiue travel gift is not the most flattering light to take a selfie. But it works great for pictures of food and wine to post to your Instagram.    These lights make unique travel gifts.

Hi Coup Professional Corkscrew

travel gifts under $20

While this has to go in your checked luggage, it’s totally worth bringing along. How many times have you brought a bottle of wine back to your hotel room only to realize there’s no opener?

That’s where this handy gadget comes in. It’s a nice quality, heavy duty wine opener. I’ve actually gifted this one myself, and I think it’s the perfect travel gift for men.

MaleDen Vintage Spiral Bound Notebook

travel gifts under $20

What a perfect travel gift for her! This is a beautiful, blank page journal with a leather wrap. It’s perfect for your traveling friends who like to write, sketch, or color. It could even work as a bullet journal.

The pages are spiral bound and easy to remove. It’s just a really nice leather-bound journal ideal for creative travelers. I also gave this travel gift to one of my girlfriends and she loves it.

Kemier Collapsable Water Bottle

travel gifts under $20

I love these collapsible water bottles. They take up so much less space compared to the huge metal ones. Like all the other travel gifts on this list, these are from Amazon. These water bottles are a great travel gift idea–especially for your friends who are health and fitness fanatics.  This is a great gift for someone going traveling in the mountains on a hiking adventure.

It’s a silicone water bottle that easily rolls and wraps up. What’s not to love about this unique travel gift?

Tile mate key finder.

travel gifts under $20

Ok for those of you who are prone to losing your keys and wallet while traveling, you’ve got to get this Tile. These little squares connect to an app on your phone, and the app locates the lost item(s) for you.

These Tile Mates are also available in a pack of 4. The 4-pack is under $40 so you could get that and give a tile mate to 3 different people and keep one for yourself. Giving away 3 and keeping one makes this travel gift $10 each. Score!

One of the coolest features of Tile Mate is its ability to find your phone on silent. Just double tap the button on your tile mate and your phone will start ringing. It’s a great way to find a lost phone on silent if you don’t have access to Find My iPhone or a similar service. Again, it’s another great gift idea for him or her.

Surprisingly Useful Travel Gifts: 18+ Practical Gift Ideas for Travelers

After years of long-term travel to 20+ countries, there are certain items we’ve found to be surprisingly useful. If you’re looking for gift ideas for someone going traveling, we think a present from this list of useful travel gifts will be much appreciated.

I’ve noticed that a lot of gift guides for travelers are full of gimmicky stuff. They might be fun and cute, but who knows if they’ll actually get used.

That’s why in this post, each gift idea is something we regularly pack on our own trips . They may not all be universal travel  essentials. But they’re some of the best gear and travel accessories that we personally find useful and recommend.

Super Useful Travel Gifts

These are our recommendations of useful travel gifts for men and women who like to travel.

Nomatic Wallet: Gift under $20 for travelers

Actually, I think Nomatic has a lot of really cool travel products (like their travel pack and planner).

The wallet’s novel design allows you to carry multiple cards as well as cash in a slim holder. Just pull on the tab and you cards slide out for easy access.

It fits in your front pocket without bulging – a perfect gift for traveling light.

Available in black, gray, red, and mint.

Check out the Nomatic wallet here >

Pocket Travel Wifi Hotspot: Gift for Nomads and Frequent Travelers

Travel wifi device in box with manual

Help your loved one stay connected while abroad. This handy device is the size of a smartphone and can connect to data plans in over 130 countries.

This is a great gift for travelers who plan to visit multiple countries. It saves the headache of having to navigate foreign data plans or set up SIM cards in each new place.

You can purchase a Travel Wifi pocket device for under $150. It includes a small amount of global data preloaded. Then your recipient can purchase data plans as they go, depending on their destination and usage. There’s no contract or subscription.

Packing Cubes: Gift under $50 for travelers

packing cubes travel gear gift ideas

Not only do they keep clothes from becoming a disorganized mess in your luggage, they can also double as “drawers” when you’re staying somewhere with limited storage. This happens to us pretty often.

Just slide the cubes, packed with your clothes, under a bed or stack them on a table, and voila – you have an instant armoire!

Our cubes are mostly by Eagle Creek from REI. We like to use a variety of sizes, which you can get when buying a set.

Toiletry Bag: Practical Gift for Any Traveler

useful travel gift ideas

I was gifted my toiletry bag (also known as a dopp kit) a loong time ago, and I still use it every single day.

I especially love that I can hang the bag anywhere. Or I can detach the self-contained bottom pouch if I need to pack light. The material is durable, like a rain coat, so it’s easy to wipe down and keep clean.

Kindle Paperwhite: Gift for Travelers and Study Abroad Students

travel gifts under $20

If you’re shopping for someone who loves to read and travel, the Kindle is a winner. It will save lots of space in their luggage.

Amazon makes different versions of their e-reader and we’ve found the Paperwhite is the best for our needs.

Its display and readability is amazing; and it doesn’t have extra, unnecessary features that the high-end model has. Though in a bind, you can use it to browse websites. We suggest spending a little extra for ad-free.

Unconventional Budget Accommodations Book

An Intentional Travelers Guide to Unconventional Budget Accommodations by Michelle C. Chang

Notice the shameless plug for our book in that Kindle picture above? It’s true, Michelle wrote a book about the money saving strategies we use to have more meaningful trips on a budget.

And it would make a great gift, too!

The book’s called Unconventional Budget Accommodations: Creative Ways to Save Money on Transformational Travel.

Update: Our budget travel book was updated in 2021! It’s available for Kindle (use on any smartphone or other device with the Kindle app) and paperback. The original edition is available on audiobook.

Check out the Unconventional Budget Accommodations book on Amazon >

Down Jacket: All Weather Travel Gift

travel gifts under $20

First, we both carry highly compressible down jackets on every trip. Even if we’re headed to a warm climate, we still bring them for the plane ride.

It packs up so small and light, there’s no harm in bringing it as a back up in case the temperatures drop or we need a makeshift pillow!

Check out REI’s top-rated compressible down jacket for men > and women here >

Runner’s Belt: Smart Gift for Travel

This has become one of the best travel accessories we’ve found for international travel. The Flip Belt is designed for runners, but we use it as an alternative to those awkward hidden travel belts or waist packs.

It’s comfortable and a great way to hide keys, money, cards, and even small phones.

Check out the FlipBelt at REI >

REI Gift Card: Flexible Gift You Can Email

A gift card for REI can be an incredibly useful travel gift. If the person wants special outdoor gear that’s a bit expensive, you can contribute a set amount with a gift card.

And it’s flexible, in case they need to pick out a specific style and size for themselves.

When our family and friends ask what to give us for Christmas, often we’ll request an REI gift card.

Fun Travel Gifts

Push pin wall map: home decor for travelers.

push pin wall map

We use our push pin wall map to keep track of the places we’ve been.

There is a wide selection of artistic maps on Etsy. Sturdy canvas ones like ours are best for using push pins, and you’ll also find some made out of wood. Other poster-style maps let you scratch off the countries and States you’ve visited.

We chose a five panel map for our bedroom wall so it would fill up more space but is easier to ship than a giant single piece. The sizes, styles, and colors are endless on Etsy.

Gift Stories, Not Stuff! Tinggly Gift Experiences

Tinggly gift box - give experiences, not things gift

We discovered Tinggly , and think it’s a brilliant idea. This service lets you choose a gift box at a flat price, sends it to your recipient (either a physical box in the mail, or an e-voucher), and the recipient can then choose from 100’s of experiences all over the world.

Gift box options include:

– Birthday, Wedding, Merry Christmas – For Him, For Her, Fun Together – Bucket List – Euro Trip – Gap Year Collection – 2 or 3 Day Getaway

So you can select whatever occasion and price point you want, and the recipient has up to 5 years to make a booking from experiences available in that category.

We had the pleasure of trying this out on our recent trip to San Diego, compliments of Tinggly. We were thrilled to try something we probably wouldn’t have spent money on ourselves: indoor skydiving!

This particular experience is part of Tinggly’s Ultimate Collection gift box , which offers the recipient 790+ experiences to book for one or two people. Here’s a sample of some other options in this gift box:

– A sailing experience for two in Rhode Island – A foodie tour for two in Cuba – A canal float for two in Tulum, Mexico – A pastry class for two in Paris – Walking tour and afternoon tea for two at Buckingham Palace – A bungee jump in Austria – And many, many more unforgettable experiences

We selected the indoor skydiving because we’ve never done anything like it and it was conveniently located during our San Diego trip. Our Tinggly gift allowed us to make our booking through iFly San Diego on our own time. We each got 4-minutes of flight with an instructor, plus a video of us in action (see above). It was a blast!

Field notebooks: stocking stuffers for travelers.

Pocket-sized field notebooks are another easy, useful gift for someone going traveling. We use them all the time to take notes for future blog posts, record words we learn in a new language, sketch out itineraries, or track expenses.

You can find these field notebooks in bookstores, gift shops, and – of course – Amazon.

Clothes Line: Stocking stuffer gift under $15 for travelers

useful travel gift ideas

It’s actually a double cord with sliding beads that help secure your clothing without bulky clothes pins.

You can tie it from tree to tree while camping or hang it up in the corner of a guest room in Europe.

Laundry is always an issue when you’re traveling on longer trips and many places don’t have drying machines readily available. This little pack takes up almost no space, so it’s especially practical for backpackers.

Check out the Sea to Summit Lite Clothes Line at REI >

Travel Towel: Practical Travel Gift

useful travel gift ideas

You might be surprised how practical a travel towel can be.

For most long-term or minimalist travelers, a normal bath or beach towel would take up too much packing space. But this synthetic fiber towel folds up smaller than a t-shirt and it dries faster, too.

Not only can a travel towel save you if your Airbnb doesn’t provide towels, it’s useful in other ways, too.

It can double as a picnic blanket, a makeshift cushion for stadium seating, or a temporary cover over valuables you have to keep in the backseat of a car.

Those are just examples. The point is, the thing is multi-purpose!

Check out the Multi Towel Lite in three different sizes at REI >

Power Adapter: Practical Gift for World Travelers

Digital Nomad Travel Gear Essentials - Tech gear and electronics reviews for long-term travel and working online | Intentional Travelers

This adapter by Bestek is another item we take  everywhere.

With the wall adapters, you can plug into outlets around the world.

It also converts voltage, which is important if you need to charge up devices in foreign countries.

Since we travel as a pair with laptops, phones, and more, we especially like that you can charge up to 7 devices simultaneously, including via USB.

Check out the Bestek International Power Adapter on Amazon >

Battery Pack: Practical Gift for Electronics Users

Digital Nomad Travel Gear Essentials - Tech gear and electronics reviews for long-term travel and working online | Intentional Travelers

Sometimes your ability to charge devices while traveling is limited. This is especially true on road trips and long flights. That’s why we invested in a really good power bank.

This one from Anker can recharge a smartphone four times. Then just plug it in overnight to power it back up.

We have found this to be really useful if we’re using our phones to watch movies on long, overseas flights. Also, when taking road trips in unfamiliar places, we use Google Maps with our phones’ GPS to navigate. This can drain the phone battery quickly, so the power bank is necessary to keep the phone alive!

You can see our phone cord plugged into our first power bank in the photo above during our New Zealand campervan trip . We now have a similar Anker charger but with USB-C port.

Check out the Anker Portable Charger  or Get it on Amazon >

Travel Clothing

A nice combo of need + want, travel clothing gifts are both practical and fun. If you don’t have a sense of the recipient’s style and sizing, consider gifting clothing items with a gift receipt attached, in case they need to exchange it.

Woolly two-tone women's sweater and men's travel pants

It’s ideal if you can find a clothing brand that they’ll connect with, too. For us in the Pacific Northwest, Seattle-based Woolly has a nice collection of sustainable and versatile travel clothing.

Thanks, Kathy. We got our clothes line from REI, as with most of our gear, since their returning policy is generous if it turns out to be not quite what you need.

Hola Michelle y Jedd! Que grandes ideas! We won’t need some of these for our upcoming trip to Mexico but when we return to Europe next summer I can definitely see how some of these would be handy. And yes, I agree with the others that the clothes line is super useful. Can you not remember where you got it? ~Kathy

Very helpful gift ideas. Going to hop on to Amazon and buy the clothes line, travel towel and packing cubes!

Down jackets and power banks are definitely quite useful stuff! We’re so glad we brought them with us here in South America!

Those gifts are actually super useful. I personally love the clothes line <3

Thanks, Thomas. We’re glad you agree!

10 best gifts for travelers under $25 for 2022

Nov 15, 2022 • 5 min read

A purple background with a white circle in the middle. Inside it says Under $25. Around the circle are images of an Ultimate US Travel book, a tin first aid kit, a green bottle in the shape of a bird and a journal.

Lonely Planet staffers have curated a budget-friendly under $25 gift guide for travelers

Wracking your brain for the perfect stocking-fillers? We've got you covered.

These under $25 gift recommendations from Lonely Planet staffers are the products we turn to when we're on the road. From sentimental pieces like destination-themed scented candles to practical items like travel wallets and journals, these budget-friendly gifts are suitable for your roommate, colleague, best friend, and everyone in between.

Homesick Candles.png

1. Homesick Candles

Recommended by Ann Douglas Lott, Lonely Planet associate editor Starting from $19

I always have a candle burning when I’m home, and Homesick candles are my go-to gift because each scent is personalized to the destination that inspired it – Tulum, Southern California, Virginia and Vancouver, to name a few. They evoke a nostalgia for the places I miss most.

National Park themed socks

2. Swiftwick National Parks Collection

Recommended by Sebastian Modak, Lonely Planet editor-at-large $20

Okay, there’s something a little cliched about giving socks as a holiday gift, but that’s only because it works. Who doesn’t love a quality pair of socks ? Swiftwick’s line combines high performance with very cool designs inspired by more than a dozen of North America’s National Parks. The socks’ moisture-wicking properties, breathability and comfort make them an easy go-to for anything active.

Venmigo's black travel wallet, shown zipped up

3. Vemingo RFID-blocking travel wallet

Recommended by Fionnuala McCarthy, Lonely Planet editorial director $17

Travel wallets are probably not needed so much now, with a digital boarding pass and credit card all that's required to travel, but I’m old-school and always fearful of losing my phone or my battery dying, along with everything to do with our vacation. So I still bring a travel wallet on family holidays and carry everyones' passports, printed boarding cards, health insurance cards, and accommodation addresses.

This one is super-handy , slim but with lots of compartments, and it’s bright, so it can be found easily in your luggage. It's also great for keeping everything together in one place at home, ready for the next trip.

Supergoop! Everyday sun lotion

4. Supergoop! Play Sunscreen (SPF 50)

Recommended by Sasha Brady, Lonely Planet digital editor From $10

This lightweight sunscreen never feels sticky and is packed with all the important stuff like strong protection from UVA, UVB and IRA rays. It's water- and sweat-resistant, making it ideal for hiking, jogging, or swimming — and for people who sweat like crazy through their faces (hello me!). It's ultra-hydrating and leaves your face and body with a non-greasy, matte finish. Best of all, it’s formulated to be reef safe and is a great option for sensitive skin because the ingredients are minimal.

The cover of The ABC Travel Greenbook: Connecting the African Diaspora Globally, showing a shirtless Black man from the back with his arm raised

5. The ABC Travel Green Book: Connecting the African Diaspora Globally

Recommended by Alicia Johnson, Lonely Planet digital editor $25

This book is a necessary resource for finding Black-owned businesses the world over, from communities, restaurants and festivals to all the other Black-first places there are to explore.

byta-16oz-mug.jpg

6. Byta stainless-steel tumblers

Recommended by Anne Zalatoris, Lonely Planet lead account manager $14.50

Byta's 16oz tumbler is the perfect size for water, coffee or even outdoor cocktails on the go — high quality, cute and sustainable, it fits perfectly in cup holders and keeps hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold. Moleskine's Cahiers notebook in bright poppy red

7. Moleskine Cahiers journals

Recommended by Sarah Stocking, Lonely Planet editor $22

These Moleskine notebooks have been my go-to journals for a lifetime of trips. The XL version is thin and lightweight, so I take a couple if it’s a very long trip, but I tend to find one works just about right no matter what. They also look great on my shelf, and I'm a sucker for the snazzy colors.

Jerry Q Art's travel watercolor set, open to show its 18 paints

8. Jerry Q Art watercolor pocket set

Recommended by Sarah Stocking, Lonely Planet editor $14

Elevate your journaling with a compact, travel-friendly paint set — this tin is the perfect size to stow away and add a little color to your writing. It also comes with a water brush, so you won't spill if painting in transit.

Welly's Bravery Bandages kit, in a yellow tin with colorful lines around the label

9. Welly adventure kits

Recommended by Sarah Stocking, Lonely Planet editor From $8

These small first aid kits are amazing: they pack everything you might need into a tin so tiny it slides into any bag. I want one for my mom kit, one for my girls’ getaways, one for hiking – in short, I want them all.

Here's the thing about a first aid kit: you never know when you're going to need one, but when you do, you really do. My first time out backpacking in Thailand, my travel companion and I realized our packs were far too heavy and purged our giant first-aid kits immediately upon arrival. Don’t let this happen to you. (They’re also the perfect little stocking-stuffer.)

BAGGU's small reusable shopping bags in a variety of colorful prints

10. Baggu reusable bags

These reusable bags have been a staple in my luggage since my New York City aunt introduced them to me 20-odd years ago – she would stash them in her handbag so she always had a shopping bag, just in case. My grandmother and I thought it was genius, and they've traveled with me ever since. Sure, there are other brands, but Baggu is the most reliable, plus they’re easy to clean and come in all kinds of sizes and colors. No more plastic shopping bags for me!

The 15 Best White Elephant Gifts That Will Impress Everyone at Your Holiday Party — All Under $25 at Amazon

We’ve got travel accessories, playful gifts, and more.

travel gifts under $20

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation. Learn more .

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

Despite the sheer number of White Elephant (or Yankee Swap) holiday parties that I’ve been to over the years, I still always end up scrambling to find the perfect (and affordable) gift for the occasion. I know that I’m not alone, so with determination, I took to Amazon (a must for those last-minute gatherings), to curate a list of the best White Elephant gifts under $25 to ease the gift-selection fatigue you may be feeling this time of year.

But that's not all — each of these gifts is not only crowd-friendly but also specifically hand-picked with travelers in mind. From must-have travel accessories like packing cubes to cozy wearable blankets , keep reading for the perfect White Elephant gift.

Tile Mate Bluetooth Tracker

The best gifts are the ones that are incredibly functional but that someone wouldn’t necessarily think to buy for themselves. Give the gift of peace of mind with this Bluetooth tracker that seamlessly connects to your phone and can get thrown in your luggage, on your keyset, or really anything else to keep track of your personal belongings.

Bedsure Wearable Blanket Hoodie

I’d be remiss if I didn’t include one playful gift on this White Elephant list. But it’s so much more than a laugh: As an owner of a wearable hoodie blanket (that I received at a White Elephant party a few years ago), I constantly wear mine for an extra touch of warmth, especially during the chilly months. They can wear this on the plane, curled up on the couch — anywhere they want to be seriously cozy. If you want to be the talk of the party, I’d give this.

Kitsch Satin Pillowcase

I’m the unofficial president of the satin pillowcase club and love them so much that I keep one packed in my travel bag for comfortable sleeping no matter the hotel or Airbnb. I especially love this one from Kitsch because I find it compact enough for travel (read: easy to gift in a small bag,) and it makes for a luxurious gift at a fraction of the cost.

Thanks to its compact size at 18 inches by 13 inches by 6.3 inches, travelers are happy to report that this bag is “ surprisingly spacious ” and can fit up to “ a week’s worth of clothes, plus toiletries and shoes as a free carry-on .” That means it meets the requirements for a personal item on Spirit and Frontier Airlines, and at just $10, it’s a thoughtful and highly practical White Elephant gift.

Ododos Adjustable Belt Bag

Belt bags are the unsung hero of travel, and their hands-free design makes them an indispensable accessory to keep your personal belongings close to you. Whether you’re on a walking tour or rushing through the airport, belt bags are a travel must, and they double as a fantastic under-$25 gift.

Every traveler needs a set of packing cubes, and this particular pack comes with six durable packing cubes: one large, two medium, two small, and one slim for all of your clothes, toiletries, and other belongings. They’re also on sale for just $13, so while you’re buying a pack as a gift, you might as well add an extra to your cart to keep one for yourself.

Cascade Mountain Collapsible Trekking Poles

Trekking poles are one of those items that people don’t always remember to buy themselves for hiking and camping trips, but with how much support and protection they provide on the trails, they’re an absolute must in our eyes. And for $20, they’re exactly in the price range for most White Elephant requirements and make a perfect gift for any outdoorsy folks in your crew.

Ihuan Thermal Winter Gloves

Coming from someone who can’t stand the cold, gloves are such an unassuming yet incredibly thoughtful gift. I am always in need of extra (or a few) pairs of gloves, and if I saw them in a lineup at a White Elephant, I’d be eyeing them the entire time. And even better, in addition to keeping your hands warm, they have touchscreen-compatible fingertips, so you can keep using your devices while they’re on.

Walnew RFID Passport Holder

With how precious our passports are, just keeping them tucked away in a bag is not nearly enough protection. And the best White Elephant gifts are the unassuming ones, so if you’re searching for a gift that’ll actually get put to use, you can’t go wrong with a passport case.

21 Hiking Gifts for under $20

travel gifts under $20

With the holidays fast approaching, my focus shifts from pitching my tent near a sturdy tree in the woods to an evergreen tree I temporarily place in my home.  Thinking of a gift to give someone whose interests differ greatly from your own can be challenging though.  In the vein of helping out my fellow hikers and backpackers and giving their peeps some intel on what they might like to find under their own tree, for their birthday, or whatever the heck you need to buy someone a gift for, I’m creating a series of hiker gift guides.

Let’s get started with the first one:   Gift ideas for the hiker or backpacker in your life for under $20.   These ideas are gender neutral, so anyone on your list will love them, but as a woman, I can tell you that they are all some of my personal favorites (and they make great stocking stuffers too!).

First up, and my own personal favorite:   A donation in their honor to a favorite trail or park association ( Friends of the Smokies is my personal favorite).  Insider tip:  Search and rescue teams are often woefully underfunded.  These groups are always looking for financial sources to help buy expensive gear and equipment to aid in searches, so if you’re feeling generous, here’s the link to the one in Haywood County, NC that I’m a part of now.

But what if “your person” really wants the thrill of ripping off the wrapping paper and finding something they can use inside?  Here are plenty of ideas, all under $20 (many are well under $20, so you could easily combine several of them to make a fun themed gift), and stocking stuffable as well!

Weatherproof Fire Starting Kit

I bought one of these for my 14-year-old son and it was an instant hit.  A great combination to create fire in wet conditions –Magnesium flint striking tool, Baddest Bee Fire Fuses (8-pack), and a clever pocket bellows, all weighing in at 2 ounces and tucked away in its own packing tube.  Yes, please!

Bellows Fire Starting Kit

UCO Waterproof Matches

These waterproof matches from UCO are the perfect complement to the weatherproof fire starting kit.  They come in their own watertight carrying case, which makes it even more secure in the elements (and if you’re ever built a fire in the rain, you know how valuable that feature is!).

UCO Waterproof Matches

WetFire Fire Starter Cubes

Keeping with the theme of all things fire:  The first time I used one of these cubes, I felt like Tom Hanks in the movie Cast Away when he finally created fire!  I had everything I needed to make one, but I was dealing with very wet wood.  So when my fire ignited like someone had held a blow torch to it, I was sold!  They barely weigh anything and are as small as a mint.  They’re also a great item to put in your child’s or your own “survival pack” worn on your body ( read this post if you’re not sure what I’m referring to).

Wetfire Fire Starters

Wetfire Fire Starters

Deuce of Spades Trowel

When you gotta go in the woods, this trowel sure speeds up the process to dig a cat hole!  Amazingly light but surprisingly durable and efficient.  A poop shovel may seem like an odd gift, but I can assure you that the backpacker in your life will think otherwise.

Deuce of Spades Trowel

3. Lightweight and Portable Camera Tripod

Setting up your camera has never been easier when you have a lightweight and easy to use tripod in your pack.  Forget the lame selfie stick, take a picture with something that will make you proud of the shot once you share it on social media later!

Pedco Ultrapod Lightweight Camera Tripod

Pedco Ultrapod Lightweight Camera Tripod

4. Therm-a-Rest Z Seat

This 2 oz. pad may be unnoticeable in your pack since it packs up accordion style, but its is worth its weight in gold in regard to comfort!  Rather than sitting on a hard log or the wet ground, your butt will thank you for the layer of cushion and dryness.  Hands down, one of the most indispensable items in my pack!

Therm-a-Rest Z Seat

Therm-a-rest Z Seat

TOAKS Titanium Long Handled Spoon

Is it extravagant to spend nearly $12 on a spoon unless it’s a compliment to the fine china you received as a wedding gift?  Sure, maybe so.  Is it worth it?  Every single time you use it.  The long handle keeps your hands from getting covered in food, whether it’s from a deep Mountain House bag or a pot, which makes your dining experience both pleasant and cleaner.  I absolutely love mine!

Backpacking Spoon

Packtowl Nano Towel

True story:  One day at the gym, I forgot to bring my bath towel to dry myself off after taking a shower.  This towel whose dimensions are 19″ x 19″ with a weight of less than 1 ounce was in my backpack in my car, so I decided to see if it lived up to its hype with absorbency.  Amazingly, it did!  It’s perfect for all sorts of uses on a trip: To wipe off condensation from a tent wall, dry yourself off after a quick dip in a lake or stream, drying cooking utensils and pots, and the list goes on and on!  Weight to reward ratio is sky high!

Packtowl Nano Towel

Rite in the Rain Journal

These clever journals are perfect for the naturalist crowd who want to journal what they find on a hike.  They’re also great if you just want to journal about your trip.  Search and Rescue teams use them to take notes on a search.  Created with weatherproof paper that won’t turn to pulp when water hits it, they’re a brilliant creation!

Rite in the Rain Journal

Buff Headwear

Just about any photo of me on a trail includes a Buff on my head, acting as a headband and sweat catcher!  There are soooo many uses for them in addition to this though:  Insect shield, face warmer, neck gaiter, etc.  The company claims they can be worn 12 different ways, but I’ll bet the creative types out there could add to that list.  They’re the bomb.

Buff

Injiji Socks

Before you look at these and scroll down, because ya know, toe socks, hear me out!  If you have ever suffered from blisters between your toes, these socks are the solution to your problem.  When a big name hiker I follow recommended them for this purpose, I decided to try them since my toes are susceptible to blisters.  They felt weird for about 5 minutes and then I completely forgot I had gloves on my feet. ;-). They are the only socks I hike in now.  P.S.  If you still want a recommendation other than toe socks, Darn Tough  gets my vote.

Injiji Socks

Hazelwood Soap Company’s Lip Balm and Bug Be Gone

Disclosure:  This company is owned by one of my besties, but that’s not why I’m recommending these products.  I’m recommending them because they rock.  Bug Be Gone is an all-natural lotion based insect repellent that not only smells yummy but works wonderfully.  And the lip balm is just as great.  Shop local and support small businesses when you can, especially when it’s a business run by some of the world’s greatest people (and they ship, if you’re not local!).

Bug Be Gone

Sunburst Trout Farms Jerky

Yep, another local product from an amazing family in western North Carolina!  Hands down, this is my favorite jerky to pack on a hike.  No fishy flavor or weird ingredients, just an amazing blend of spices and heart healthy Sunburst Trout.  It’s truly one of the best culinary highlights of my hikes!   Sunburst Farms ships as well!

Mile Mile and a Half Movie

Obviously this isn’t something you’d take on a hike, but it sure provides good eye candy for one of the most iconic trails in the US–the John Muir Trail (JMT)!  Produced by a witty blend of photographers and cinematographers who decide to hike the JMT and document the journey.  They’re everyday people and not uber athletes, which is refreshing in this genre of movies.  I have watched it several times (if you have Amazon Prime, you can watch it for free currently!) and it’s a visual treat as well as entertaining!

Mile Mile and a Half Movie

The Way Movie

A story of redemption and parental love, it’s one of my favorite movies of all time.  It will leave you reflecting on your own relationships and the power walking has on so many of us who are grieving the loss of a loved one.  On a lighter note, it provides stunning scenery of the Camino de Santiago Trail which is on many a bucket list in the hiking world.  It’s another freebie to stream with Amazon Prime at the time of this posting.

Hand and Toe Warmers

These little packets are a game changer on a winter hike or backpacking trip if you have difficulty keeping your hands or toes warm. They are also a valuable addition to your first aid kit too, in case you were ever lost on a hike in winter and were struggling to stay warm.  They also make toe warmers to stick on your socks to keep your tootsies nice and toasty!

Honey Stinger Chews

When I thru hiked the Tahoe Rim Trail , I treated myself to a pack of these each afternoon when my legs were feeling heavy and tired.  I’m sure it was 99% placebo effect, but they always seemed to give me the extra boost I needed to make my miles.  They’re organic and have vitamin C in them, for what that’s worth, but I like them because they taste great!   The same company also makes “waffles” which are yummy too, and my kids enjoy them as a special treat on a hike!

Hiking Maps

From an early age, I have  loved  maps.  I think many hikers share my affection for them.  If you’re a hiker yourself and have visited a place you’d like a friend to experience, giving them a map to dream over is something they’ll appreciate (and hopefully use if they are inspired to plan a trip around it!).

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Map

I sincerely hope you found something useful to choose from on this list, and if you’re looking for more gift recommendations, check out my Outdoor and Adventure Kid’s Book Gift Guide too.  It lists my favorite books for kids of any ages who enjoy reading about outdoor adventures (and lots of them sneak a good bit of outdoor education too!).

If you have a favorite item in your own pack that costs less than $20, I’d love to know about it.  Chime in on the comments section below if you’d like!

For the grad in need of wise words

The years following graduation are a tumultuous journey. So it’s no surprise that many stories of young adulthood and self-exploration touch on travel. Sheila Heti’s candid, philosophical, autobiographical novel How Should a Person Be? explores sexuality, artistic life, and female friendships through the protagonist’s travels from Toronto to New York City and Miami’s Art Basel. Paulo Coelho’s classic The Alchemist ventures a shepherd boy’s voyage from Andalusia to the Egyptian pyramids, asking questions of individual destiny, connection with nature, and the role of fear in our lives.

The 80+ Best Deals From Amazon's Big Spring Sale (And Across the Internet) This Week

A collage of a Waterpik, Cotopaxi backpack, and Yeti cooler

Amazon’s Big Spring Sale kicked off on Wednesday and lasts through Monday, March 25.

The introduction of yet another Amazon-manufactured sale event sees the online retail giant promising savings on cleaning gear, outdoor essentials, electronics, clothing, and home goods.

But does the sale live up to the hype? We’ve assessed the deals on offer (so far). Most didn’t make the grade, so we dug in to find those that are truly worth the spend.

Below, we’ve rounded up the best deals from Amazon and other retailers offering competing sales, including REI, to find you only the best spring deals on our expert-approved picks.

The best deals on:

Lawn and garden, outdoor, camping, and hiking, luggage and travel, kitchen and appliance, tech, laptops, and tv, spring clothing and shoes, home, furniture and personal care.

A Roborock Q5+ in its self-emptying dock.

Roborock Q5+ Robot Vacuum — Our Pick Roborock deal price: $370 with code ROBOROCKS ; street price: $550

What we like: Our self-emptying robot vacuum pick. Better battery life, app navigation, mapping, and voice command response to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant than other bots. Large bin. Excels at cleaning hard floors and low- to medium-pile carpets.

Other things to know: Comes with a charging station that empties debris into a disposable bag. Like nearly all bots we tested, it struggles with debris near thresholds and baseboards. A new low price, but not by much. Use coupon code ROBOROCKS .

Read our review of the best robot vacuums .

Roborock Q5 Robot Vacuum — Our Pick Roborock deal price: $210 with code ROBOROCKS ; street price: $430

What we like: Our pick for the best robot vacuum. Offers better mapping, easier app navigation, a longer battery life, and more reliable voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant than other models we tested. Excels on low and medium-pile carpet and hard floors.

Other things to know: Doesn't come with a self-emptying charging station like the "plus" model. Like almost all bots we tested, struggles with debris near thresholds and baseboards. One-year warranty, but few replacement parts. New low price, but not by much. Use coupon code ROBOROCKS .

Our pick for best garden hose that offers better quality for a higher price, the Eley 5/8-inch Polyurethane Garden Hose.

Eley 5/8-inch Polyurethane Garden Hose (50 Feet) — Upgrade Pick Eley deal price: $103 ; street price: $122

What we like: Our upgrade garden hose pick. Much lighter, easier to loop, more durable, and resists folding or kinking compared to other options. Large brass fittings at the ends are easy to tighten by hand or wrench. Absolutely hosetastic—the best we’ve ever tested.

Other things to know: Pricey—even when on sale—but if you want a hose that's better in every way and are willing to pay for it, this is the one to get. 10-year warranty. Deal price is for the 50-foot length.

Read our review of the best garden hose and hose reel .

Fiskars 28" Power-Lever Bypass Lopper — Also Great Amazon deal price: $20 ; street price: $23

What we like: A larger variant of the lopper pick in our guide to lawn and garden gear to get your yard cleaned up. A lopper cleanly cuts branches too big for pruners, and because it requires just one simple snip, it works far faster than a saw. It’s great for dealing with low-hanging limbs.

Other things to know: Might not be necessary if you already have a pruners and saw. This 28-inch version is good for bigger and harder-to-reach branches. Shipping is delayed.

Ego LM2135SP Power+ 21″ Select Cut Lawn Mower with extra battery — Runner-Up Lowe’s deal price: $600 ; street price: $950 Amazon deal price: $600 ; street price: $950

What we like: Our runner-up pick for the best lawn mower, bundled with an extra Ego battery. Battery-powered self-propelled mower can run for about an hour on a single battery charge. No need for gas, oil checks, or fuel storage, and no noxious emissions. Considerably quieter than gas mowers.

Other things to know: First deal we’ve seen since Black Friday. Minimal maintenance compared with gas models. A little less powerful and shorter run time than our top pick, but additional battery easily makes up for primary battery’s capacity. Extra Ego BA2800T battery has 56-volt, 5 Ah, 280 Wh capacity, usually between $200 and $300 when purchased separately.

Read our review of the best lawn mower .

What we like: Our top pick for the best string trimmer. Outperformed the other brands’ trimmers in run time and power. Telescoping shaft and handle are easy to adjust and make the tool comfortable to use.

What we like: A wider-mouth version of our simple stainless steel water bottle pick. Insulated double-walled stainless steel kept drinks hot for six hours or cold for a full day in our tests. Pleasant to sip from, simple to carry, and completely leakproof. Wide mouth makes it easy to add ice.

Other things to know: No silicone boot like our other picks. Includes detachable BPA-free Flex Sip lid. Not dishwasher-safe. Limited lifetime warranty. On sale in select colors in 16-ounce size. Not the lowest price we've seen, but still a good value.

Leatherman Free P2 Multi-Tool — Also Great Moosejaw deal price: $104 with single-use discount and free Dick's ScoreCard account ; street price: $130

What we like: Our pick for the best full-sized multi-tool. Wider tool selection than our top pick, we found the added scissors and a package opener routinely useful day to day. With its handles closed, all of the tools can be accessed with a single hand. Slender, streamlined design. Included pocket clip.

Other things to know: Bit heavier than top pick. Combo blade with serrations (which we don't prefer). You have to sign in with your free Dick's ScoreCard account to get the discount on a single full-price item from Moosejaw. Shipping is free.

Panel Sound USAPA Approved Fiberglass Pickleball Paddles — Staff Favorite Amazon deal price: $20 in select colors ; street price: $35

Other things to know: Set includes two paddles, four indoor balls, a carrying case, and two cooling towels. Deal is for the red paddle set.

Read our review of the best pickleball equipment for playing at home .

Vasque Breeze Waterproof Hiking Boot (Men’s Sizes) — Also Great REI deal price: $96 with single-use code MEMBER24, REI membership required ; street price: $140

What we like: Our more flexible hiking boot pick. Offers all the comfort of a trail-running shoe with the ankle support of a hiking boot. Lighter weight (just over 2 pounds per pair) is good for longer hikes. Substantial enough to support you while carrying a heavy pack.

Other things to know: Runs narrow—we recommend ordering at least a half-size up from your street-shoe size. Takes longer to break (about 10 miles) in than our top pick. On sale in nutria color for REI members with single-use promo code  MEMBER24 .

Read our review of the best hiking boots .

Snow Peak Ti-Single 600 Cup With Hotlips — Staff Favorite REI deal price: $34 with single-use code MEMBER24, REI membership required ; street price: $43

What we like: A larger version of an ultralight titanium mug we like for campfire cooking and making coffee on the go. Durable, smooth titanium design. Roomy flip-out handle. Attach to a carabiner for external storage. Food-grade silicone HotLips help mitigate potential scorching.

Other things to know: Cup may be too hot to drink from on its own at first pour. Can also be used as a single-serving pot for boiling water. Hotlips only fit on Snow Peaks mugs. Use single-use coupon code MEMBER24 . REI membership required.

Read our review of our favorite campfire cooking tips tricks and gear .

Sawyer Products Permethrin Fabric Treatment (24 Ounces) — Also Great Amazon deal price: $14 ; street price: $18

What we like: Our bug repellent pick for clothing and gear (but not your skin). As effective as similar formulas at repelling ticks and mosquitoes, and its trigger spray is easier to control and apply evenly. Each application provides about six washings (or six weeks, whichever comes first) of protection.

Other things to know: The 24-ounce bottle should be enough to treat four outfits (shirt, pants, socks). The set of two 24-ounce bottles offers a slightly better price per ounce if you need to stock up.

Read our review of the best bug repellents .

An opened Monos Hybrid Trunk lying flat on its back.

Monos Hybrid Trunk — Also Great Monos deal price: $410 with code ANOTHERYEAR ; street price: $455

What we like: Our pick for the best trunk for checking. Made of a robust polycarbonate with aluminum corner guards and an aluminum frame around the center seam that reinforces the body of the luggage. Has two TSA locks, which close with a satisfying latch.

Other things to know: Due to the design, some travelers consider trunks to be easier to pack and to maneuver. Does away with the standard zipper closure. Doesn’t have a ton of built-in organization. Lifetime warranty. Use code ANOTHERYEAR .

Protected by a full lifetime warranty and has the build quality to back that up. Made with 1,680-denier ballistic nylon and includes a rain fly.

On sale for REI members with single-use promo code MEMBER24 (only the color river remains in stock at REI) or for the public at Moosejaw with a single-use promo and free Dick's ScoreCard account (four colors available).

Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L — Also Great Moosejaw deal price: $240 with single-use discount and free Dick's ScoreCard account ; street price: $300

What we like: Our large carry-on travel backpack pick. Easy accessibility. Clever tuck-away straps. Elegant way of expanding and contracting. Design is adjustable, customizable, and (if you spring for the extra cubes and organizers) an almost perfect system for photographers and gearheads.

Other things to know: Lifetime warranty. Committing to the entire system of packing and camera cubes adds extra cost to an already expensive bag. Not the absolute best sale we've seen. Sign in with free Dick's ScoreCard account to get 20% off a single full-price item from Moosejaw. Free shipping.

Apple AirTag Bluetooth Tracker — Our Pick Amazon deal price: $24 ; street price: $29

What we like: Our pick for the best Bluetooth tracker for iOS users leverages Apple’s huge network of devices to find lost goods. Impressively accurate. Replaceable coin battery. If you lose an AirTag (or an item containing or attached to one), you can use the Find My app to see its location or ask Siri to trigger an audible alert.

Other things to know: Doesn’t have any way to ring your phone. No built-in method of attaching to anything. Solid deal for an individual tracker but sales for sets of four typically offer a better price per tracker.

Read our review of the best Bluetooth tracker .

Zojirushi NS-TSC10 Rice Cooker (5.5 Cups) — Another Good Option Amazon deal price: $150 ; street price: $180

What we like: Another good rice cooker that costs less than our top pick and performs almost as well. Makes superb white, long-grain, and sticky rice. Has a solid quick-cook setting. $65 cheaper than the current price of our top pick in the same size.

Other things to know: Former pick top pick (we prefer the Neuro Fuzzy’s pot because it has handles and a more advanced fuzzy-logic chip that can turn an atrociously mis-measured batch of rice into something edible). For big families and voracious eaters, the 10-cup version of this cooker on sale for $165.

Read our ode to the YouCopia StoraLid Lid Organizer .

YouCopia Storemore Expandable Adjustable Pan and Lid Rack — Our Pick Amazon deal price: $18 ; street price: $30

What we like: A variant of our adjustable bakeware rack pick. We recommend the bakeware rack in several of our articles on kitchen organization; this pan-and-lid rack has a similar design but extends up to 22 inches, and the wire dividers are shaped to account for lid handles. Easy way to organize a variety of kitchen items.

Other things to know: Comes with 10 adjustable dividers. At 13 inches wide without expanding, it’s not as compact as our recommended bakeware rack. Additional and replacement dividers are sold separately by the merchant.

Cuisinart CPT-122 2-Slice Compact Plastic Toaster — Top Pick Amazon deal price: $24 in select colors ; street price: $30

What we like: Our longtime top pick for the best two-slot toaster. Produced the most evenly browned bread in our testing. Wide range of settings and easy-to-use controls. Wide slots for thick-cut bagels.

Gracula Garlic Crusher — Gift Pick Amazon deal price: $15 ; street price: $25

What we like: A Dracula-inspired kitchen gadget recommended in multiple Wirecutter gift guides. Any cooking-inclined classic-horror fan, kid, or year-round Halloween celebrant would “vant” this as a gift. Plop a few cloves into the base (his cape), pop on the top (his head), and twist at the neck to mince.

Other things to know: Make sure to remove chopped garlic quickly—vampires can’t tolerate garlic for long (plus, it’s a nightmare to clean when dried).

Read our review of the best Valentine’s Day gifts under $25 .

Philips GoZero Sparkling Water Maker — Budget Pick Amazon deal price: $54 ; street price: $64

12 Cheap Meals in Las Vegas (Under $20)

E ating affordably in Vegas requires planning and determination. Initially, expenses were manageable, allowing focus on slot machines and shows. However, food prices have significantly increased over the years, making Las Vegas a premier dining destination. I found a dozen cheap meals in Las Vegas (I consider that to be under $20) that I would reorder and recommend.

I moved close to Las Vegas 18 months ago, and I love our weekly visit to learn our way around and try new restaurants and neighborhoods. We are learning what’s good and what’s not, where to splurge and where to save, and the ins and outs of the Vegas hotel scene.

FYI : #11 will knock your socks off!

If you are trying saving a few bucks on your travels, I’m here to help.

Table of Contents

1. siegel’s bagelmania, 2. gonzalez y gonzalez, 3. suns out buns out, 4. diablo’s cantina, 5. nacho daddy, 6. gordon ramsay pub & grill, 7. shake shack, 8. bonanno’s new york pizzeria, 9. trevi italian restaurant, 10. lazy dog, 11. chicago joe’s, 12. saginaw’s delicatessen, las vegas delights taste buds.

I frequented Siegel’s Bagelmania for three consecutive mornings. This notable restaurant, the most extensive Jewish deli on the West Coast, boasts outstanding bagels comparable to New York City’s. The menu selections in Las Vegas were exceptional.

One morning, I savored “The Godfather” – a 3-egg burrito, scramble (or omelet) with pepperoni, provolone, parmesan, and marinara. It was served with a bagel, schmear of choice, and a side item – potato pancakes accompanied by cherry applesauce and sour cream.

This breakfast deserves a perfect ten score.

I opted for turkey sausage patties and an Asiago bagel with veggie lite cream cheese on another visit. I indulged in the “Vegas Sun” scramble with ham, red and orange peppers, onions, and veggie cream cheese.  Siegel’s Bagelmania  is a restaurant and deli offering pastries, coffee, and to-go bagels at the bakery counter.

Sharing the space is Pinkbox Donuts, known for their delightful sweet treats.

My meals were under $20, and the service was exceptional. Bagelmania is a Coca-Cola account, unlike most Pepsi ones on The Strip, so I didn’t mind splurging for a soda. One meal was $19.94, another $12.95, and the last $18.34.

Located on Village Street at the New York, New York Hotel and Casino, this Mexican eatery offers a delightful array of Southwestern dishes. With an extensive drink menu featuring a variety of margaritas, Gonzalez Y Gonzalez is an excellent choice for dining.

Their Chicken Enchiladas, made with rolled corn tortillas topped with guajillo chile sauce, melted Chihuahua cheese, and sour cream, are a delectable option. This tasty meal, priced at $18.39, was served with Mexican rice, black beans, and a flavorful fire-roasted tomato salsa.

Mesquite, NV, is only an hour away, and has old-school casino gambling and delicious dining , as well. Here are our favorite restaurants there.

Resorts World Casino offers affordable dining options, and for breakfast, I chose Suns Out Buns Out. I had the delightful Soft Scramble with a Diet Coke (bottle). The eatery has a trendy and vibrant ambiance, and the soft scramble was flavorful—the green onions added a delightful touch, and the buns were irresistibly soft.

The bill came to $17.17, just under $20. I would gladly dine here whenever possible.

Late at the Mirage Hotel, I finally stumbled upon  Diablo’s Cantina  after scouring multiple eateries with steep prices. Opting for the bar, I swiftly ordered a bowl of Chicken Pozole alongside a refreshing tea. This Pozole variant featured shredded cabbage, providing a delightful crunch and an extra layer of flavor to the traditional soup.

Situated at the Mirage’s South Entrance Walkway, Diablo’s Cantina emanates an infectious festive ambiance, making it an ideal destination for large groups. Despite being alone, the bartender’s engaging conversation kept me company. The bill at Diablo’s amounted to a modest $16.80, yet another satisfying meal in Las Vegas under $20.

Nacho Daddy  in Las Vegas boasts three convenient locations (Summerlin, The Strip, and Downtown), offering an extensive bar menu of fabulous appetizers and entrees. Their world-famous gourmet nachos feature clever combos and a plethora of ingredients, ensuring a perfectly messy, tasty, and enjoyable experience. Their motto, “no one gets a dry chip”, is gold.

The Enchilada Nachos, priced at $19.95 before tax, is a personal favorite, topped with chicken breast, cheeses, refried beans, japs, sour cream, and avocado lime salsa on housemade corn chips. The Carnitas Nachos, with succulent pork, roasted tomatillo sauce, and refried beans, are also highly recommended.

Pair your nachos with a margarita, or dare to try their original scorpion shot for an extra indulgence.

One lucky evening, I found a seat at the bar of Gordon Ramsay’s authentic English Pub in Caesar’s Palace. Eyeing the Short Rib Kettle Chip Nachos on the room service menu for days, the excessive delivery fee deterred me. But now, I only paid $18.43 for the exquisite nachos.

The plate featured freshly fried chips smothered in English cheddar sauce, pickled peppers, and sour cream. The neighboring crowd, mostly attending the Luke Bryan concert, couldn’t help but envy my dish. Despite my best efforts, I couldn’t finish it all. Nonetheless, the nachos were truly excellent.

I hadn’t tried Shake Shack’s breakfast before, but it’s as delightful as their other offerings. I ordered the Double Sausage Egg Cheese with iced tea and fries with cheese sauce. This is precisely what one needs after a 44-mile walk in Vegas, flying back home.

Every bite was enjoyable, and I found a clean place to sit at the  Shake Shack  airport restaurant. The food was served piping hot, and this delicious meal only cost $17.29. There is also a second location outside New York – New York Hotel on the Vegas Strip.

Upon being dropped off at the Flamingo Hotel following my monorail ride, I traversed the entirety of the hotel to reach Caesar’s, my temporary abode. En route, I stumbled upon a relatively unoccupied food court at the Flamingo, exuding enticing aromas. These aromas emanated from  Bonanno’s Pizzeria , where most patrons congregated.

While my preference does not gravitate toward pizza, it transpired that they offered four variations of Stromboli. Opting for a vegetarian option featuring mushrooms and broccoli, I procured a piping hot Stromboli after a brief heating period, accompanied by a generous serving of fountain beverage.

The entirety of this filling meal came in at $18.34. Other Bonanno’s Pizzeria locations are at the MGM and Venetian Food Courts.

Lunch at  Trevi  was an excellent choice. I enjoyed a late lunch/early dinner, indulging in a $26 Italian entree. The price was reasonable, considering it combined lunch and dinner, especially since the meal was incredibly delicious and satisfying. The Fettuccine Pollo Carbonara, generously portioned, could have easily served as two meals.

Unfortunately, lacking a microwave in my hotel, I relished every delectable bite, savoring the luscious combination of sliced chicken, peas, mushrooms, onion, and light parmesan cream sauce. The addition of prosciutto ham elevated the dish. The bill totaled $28.18.

Located adjacent to the Romanesque fountain at the Forum Shops at Caesar’s, Trevi boasts an indoor patio, perfect for observing passersby.

Lazy Dog Bar & Restaurant is a remarkable and popular chain eatery located at the beautiful Town Square shopping complex in Las Vegas. Their menu offers creative and delectable options, such as the Blackened Chicken Burrito Bowl, which I had.

This flavorful dish features rice, chicken breast, corn, cabbage, guac, black beans, hatch chiles, jack + cheddar, salsa, and tapatío crema. Priced at $16.95 before tax, it is a substantial and satisfying portion.

Aside from their fantastic menu choices, what sets Lazy Dog apart is their commitment to sourcing local ingredients and preparing each meal by hand daily. Their dedication extends to homemade sauces, marinades, and dressings.

As the name suggests, Lazy Dog is pet-friendly with outdoor seating and even offers a pet menu featuring a choice of a grilled hamburger or chicken breakfast with brown rice and veggies. The restaurant also offers a delightful brunch from 9 AM to 2 PM on Saturdays and Sundays.

In the Arts District, Chicago Joe’s Italian Restaurant is a fun old-school eatery with classic foods and fair prices. Though closed on Sunday and Monday, Chicago Joe’s can satisfy all your Italian cravings, from appetizers and salads to entrees and desserts.

Lunch entrees are around $10-$12 each, the best bargain you’ll find in town. Add a small salad for only $2.50 more. If you are a garlic freak like me, you’ll love the creamy garlic dressing. Now, here is the magic. Arrive Tuesday Through Saturday before 6:30 and get a smaller portion meal for $15 per entree.

Chicago Joe’s Chicken Angelo, bursting with artichoke hearts and mushrooms in a white wine sauce, is sheer perfection. Hot bread and salad are included. You can thank me later.

I am crazy about the Circa Hotel. I am so glad they have affordable dining choices like Saginaw’s Delicatessen. This restaurant is open 24/7 and has a spectacular breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu.

I ordered Ann’s Fried Bologna sandwich, priced at $18. I’m not exaggerating when I say this sandwich is 10/10 delicious, and you will clean your plate! The fried-up bologna sandwich also has yellow mustard, mayo, lettuce, and tomato stacked between billowy pieces of Pullman bread. Sandwiches come with homemade chips and a pickle spear.

Also on the menu are honkin’ big salads, heavenly latkes, creative omelets, and how about the grilled cinnamon rolls?

I enjoy living near Las Vegas, visiting weekly, and learning more about this fantastic city. I’ve barely scratched Sin City’s surface, but I like what I’ve seen and done so far. Do you have suggestions for restaurants I should put on my radar?
