From the Speedy to the Alma, a History of Louis Vuitton Handbags

Some symbols soar and then vanish without a trace. But others endure for so long they become part of the fashion landscape, seemingly forever—like, say, those on Louis Vuitton handbags.

One hundred and twenty-five years ago, Georges Vuitton, who had inherited the famed luggage maison from his father, Louis, faced a dilemma: how to distinguish his house’s elegant goods from the many other luxury travel companies vying for a wealthy Parisian clientele. He was desperate that the brand’s innovations—among them the introduction of a trunk with a flat top that could be stacked, replacing the old-fashioned dome covers—not be purloined by imitators.

So Georges came up with the famous logo that we know so well: that V overlapping the L, in tawny gold over saddle brown. To make this monogram even more distinctive, he added two more elements: a stylized flower with four pointed petals inside a black rhombus, and a rounded flower within a solid circle.

Who could have predicted that this design, scattered over the surfaces of countless, seemingly endless handbags, totes, and trunks, would become as instantly recognizable as, say, Chanel No. 5, Coca-Cola, and Mickey Mouse? Adored by everyone from streetwise musicians to grumpy dowagers, the Vuitton bag has been worn by shining stars including, to name just a very few, Audrey Hepburn and Jackie O,  Angelina Jolie and Lauren Bacall ,  Riri and Kim K, and you! And your mom! For generations, it remained coveted, revered, and virtually unchanged.

Well, unchanged at least until Marc Jacobs came along. How to describe the electric response that met Jacobs’s audacity when he took the reins as creative director of the house in 1997 and introduced Vernis, a patent version of the bag, still sporting the L and V but now incised in bright patent? This was followed by an even nervier move—Jacobs enlisted his hipster buddy, the artist-designer Stephen Sprouse, to scrawl the words “Louis” and “Vuitton” over the surface of the bag, a startling yet charming result that is deeply desirable so many years later.

Now the floodgates were open. In developments that would surely have made Georges Vuitton’s tête spin and explode, the whimsical Japanese artist Takashi Murakami remade the monogram in white, introduced a riot of LV colors, and sometimes added a funny character or a spray of cherry blossoms. For spring 2008, artist Richard Prince painted the bags with his irreverent artworks.

Over the last two decades, a wide range of other collaborators have added their own special interpretations to the Vuitton roster—but the monogram remains, sometimes lurking, sometimes proudly out front. The sheer scope of offerings makes it hard to choose.

Start with the Speedy —a delightful gateway drug to the world of Vuitton!—a soft rectangular shape, sometimes wildly innovative—mirrored silver or camouflage; sometimes merely sporting classic LVs. Maybe you have a Noa bucket, but don’t you want a round-top Alma, too? If even your biggest handbag is bursting at its seams, there is the aptly named Neverfull, a tote that swears it can always accommodate one more thing. In fact, if you are the sort of person who carries a giant tote in the morning and slims it down at night, there is a whole host of Pochette accessories in varying shapes and sizes to meet every need, real or imagined, that you can conceal in your Neverfull. But let’s say, just for the sake of argument, that you have never been an all-over logo sort of woman. For you, the maison has models like the Capucines , available in a riot of patterns—even a glittery zebra stripe!—and flaunting a single large LV.

Whatever speaks loudest to you, the hallowed LV monogram transcends mere style—it is meant to be flaunted and cherished, a rare icon that transcends mere moment and season, and resides in the halls of fashion greatness.

All hail the Speedy! Perhaps the most iconic of all the Louis Vuitton handbags, available in a huge range of sizes and with a vast variety of decorations—no handbag collection is complete without one.

Zendaya's Best Tenniscore-Inspired Looks From Her Challengers Press Tour

Zendaya, together with her stylist Law Roach, has served some very on-theme tennis fashion.

preview for Zendaya's best red-carpet fashion moments

Every item on this page was chosen by a Town & Country editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

Zendaya told Elle last year that her partnership with Roach is key to her entire aesthetic. "He's involved in every fashion contract, everything I do," she said. "If I have an opportunity where he can come with me, he’s always going to be there. He's always been my creative director in a sense, and he continues to fill that role, because it’s more than just clothes on a red carpet."

Here, see all of Zendaya's best tenniscore-inspired outfits for the Challengers press tour (and be sure to check back, because we'll be updating this story regularly!):

For a photocall outside the Sydney Opera House, Zendaya wore custom Lacoste, designed by Pelagia Kolotouros and inspired by their Fall/Winter 2024 collection , "The Victory of 1927." Lacoste has long been a brand associated with tennis—it was founded by René Lacoste, a French tennis star, in 1933—so it makes perfect sense for Zendaya to wear on the Challengers press tour.

For the first red carpet event for Challengers , Zendaya opted for a custom Loewe dress . The glittering green dress was meant to evoke a tennis court, and a silhouette of a player (plus a racket and tennis ball) was on the dress. She wore matching Loewe pumps, and accessorized with Bulgari jewelry.

While not the exact Loewe pumps that Zendaya wore, these are similar! Plus, Loewe's toy pumps are very in for tennis spectators—just see, for example, Emma Watson and Ariana Grande at Wimbledon last summer .

For press in Australia, Zendaya wore an Elisabetta Franchi shirt from their Fall 2024 collection , which took inspiration "from the timeless image of English college uniforms." She also wore Christian Louboutin pumps.

While the Indian Wells women's championship was not an official stop on the Challengers press tour, we're counting it. To watch the match, Zendaya wore an ivory Louis Vuitton zip-up with a matching pleated skort, and accessorized with the brand's Ellipse BB Bag . She also wore On Running sneakers, which were a collaboration with none other than tennis great Roger Federer.

Scott Frost 'dying' for chance to coach after growing older, wiser from disappointing Nebraska tenure

Frost went just 16-31 over five seasons after being called back home to revive his once-proud alma mater.

Nebraska v Wisconsin

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Scott Frost is available. Actually, Scott Frost is more than available .

"For the first time in my life, I don't know what's next," the former Nebraska coach told CBS Sports. "I'm dying to get back in."

You don't see many national coach of the year winners as young as Frost, 49, without a job, but these are different times and unique circumstances.

Earning multiple coaching honors after leading UCF to an undefeated season and New Year's Six bowl win over Auburn in 2017, Frost went back home to Nebraska for a chance to lead his alma mater.

This meant more than just the comfort of going home. The native son from Wood River, Nebraska, starred at quarterback for the Cornhuskers and won a national championship -- the program's last in 1997 -- after transferring from Stanford .

The prodigal son returning did not result in a happy ending. Two hiring cycles have passed since Frost was fired after a 1-2 start in 2022. Fifty-two schools have changed coaches since, some of which gauged Frost's interest.

The experience made him older and wiser. He may be anxious to get back, but at one point during a 70-minute conversation, Frost pulled out his phone and proudly showed videos of his young son playing touch football. These are the days you can't get back. He knows that.

Frost also knows he lasted longer than the athletic directors who hired and inherited him. Bill Moos retired in June 2021 after three years and eight months on the job. Trev Alberts, a fellow Nebraska legend, inherited -- and later fired -- Frost. He recently left for the same role at Texas A&M after only 32 months on the job.

Nebraska also cycled through three school presidents during Frost's tenure. That may say more about the administration than Frost, who put in eight years at his alma mater between playing and coaching.

The former Huskers quarterback chooses not to reflect on those days. In fact, he prefers not talking about Nebraska.

"This is bad to say to a media guy, but I've never wanted to be a critic," Frost said. "I've wanted to be in the arena."

The "arena" to which Frost is referring is the coaching profession.

Over breakfast at a Scottsdale eatery, Frost agreed to discuss the past, the state of the game and his future. It's clear he will be back coaching even if that means working his way back up the ladder.

Frost is comfortable living in Scottsdale with his three young children. He has time to plan. The family prefers the location so much that it might be hard moving back to a small college town. The NFL also remains an option. In the end, though, Frost has 15 million (the amount of his Nebraska buyout) reasons to take his time.

"My whole life I was a little league player and a high school player and then a college player and then an NFL player and then a [graduate assistant], and then a position coach, then a coordinator and then a head coach," Frost said. "It was on a trajectory, and I knew what was next."

That's not so much the case at the moment, which is OK. Let's not forget: At one point, Frost was the hot, young coach who went 13-0 at UCF. In those four-plus seasons at Nebraska, however, he went 16-31, the worst record for a Huskers coach since Bill Jennings (1957-61).

Nebraskans can continue ripping Frost, but that becomes tiresome when you've already torn apart the other coaches who followed the legendary Tom Osborne. Better to look to the future themselves.

Who knows whether the program can ever get its mojo back with the Big Ten expanding and the dissolution of divisions making it more difficult to play for a conference championship.

Nebraska struggled to find an identity in the modern era when it transitioned to the Big Ten in 2011. It fired Frank Solich, a former Big 12 Coach of the Year, who was 58-19 in six seasons leading the Huskers. Bill Callahan, who had guided the Oakland Raiders to a Super Bowl appearance, didn't pan out. Bo Pelini won at least nine games in all seven of his seasons, yet he didn't last. Mike Riley, a former Pac-10 Coach of the Year, went 19-19 in three seasons.

Frost's innovative spread offense that worked so well at Oregon and UCF failed to produce the same results at Nebraska. Was that part of the problem? Ryan Day's (similar) scheme has been good enough to go 56-8 at Ohio State . At the same time, Jim Harbaugh and Michigan took the game back to the stone age , winning a national championship and toppling the rival Buckeyes in three consecutive seasons.

"I know this, there's some good coaches out there. I'm a good coach. I belong doing it," Frost said. "I just don't know for sure where that's going to be right now. If the right head coach job comes along, I'd take it. If the right coordinator job comes, I'd take it."

Frost's replacement at Nebraska, Matt Rhule, has renewed Big Red optimism after going 5-7 in his first season, tied for Nebraska's best record since 2016. Rhule went out of his way to praise Frost, telling On3 in November, "To me, if you're a smart coach? You follow good staffs."

College football has reshaped itself in the 18 months Frost has been out of the game. When he left, the one-time transfer rule was a month old; name, image and likeness had been around for 14 months. College football was just settling into the new normal where a good portion of success is tied directly to your NIL collective.

"As a coach, Nick Saban said it," Frost said. "It used to be a 45-week-a-year job. Now, it's a 52-week-a-year job. You're scouting other teams' players, recruiting year-round, raising money for NIL year-round.

"The part I love about college football [is] taking an 18-year-old kid and watching him leave as a 22-year-old man who has life figured out. You played a part in that."

As an assistant at Oregon, Frost recruited both Marcus Mariota and Justin Herbert. Mariota won the Heisman Trophy in 2014 while leading the Ducks to a berth in the first College Football Playoff; Herbert developed from a from three-star prospect to first-round NFL Draft pick during his time with the program.

At UCF, a place upon which Frost looks back fondly, his prized QB pupil was McKenzie Milton, who led the Knights on that undefeated charge in the 2017 season.

"In 10 years, UCF could be a [national] power," Frost said of his old employer. "It's the best college town in Florida by far. Orlando? The campus is beautiful."

Those aforementioned star signal callers tied to Frost makes it all the more strange he never got consistently reliable play from the position during his time at Nebraska. That also played a role in the Huskers losing some historically close games.

  • Nebraska's last 13 losses under Frost all came by single digits.
  • All nine losses in 2021 were by single digits, the most in the AP Top 25 era (since 1936).
  • Nebraska was 4-21 in games decided by seven points or fewer under Frost.

That's either a trend or some terrible luck. Maybe both. Whatever the case, it shouldn't damn his prospects of stepping back into the coaching profession.

"Coaching is what I do," Frost said. "It's what I'm good at. It's what I love."

At this point, Frost gets philosophical. Forget about what it looks like, just winning again would be great.

"You think the Steelers [with the Immaculate Reception] said, 'We really got lucky and the ball [ticked] off somebody's foot and Franco Harris caught it. We shouldn't have won?' Frost said. "Whatever it takes, you win."

Nicki Minaj delivers spectacle backed up by skill on biggest tour of her career: Review

W ASHINGTON – As one of the most celebrated, successful rappers and engaging personalities, Nicki Minaj could slouch her way through her Pink Friday 2 tour and fans would still slather her with praise.

After all, they don’t seem to mind the continued late starts – 10:20 p.m. at Monday’s Capital One Arena in D.C., more than two hours past the ticketed promise but in line with her timing so far on tour – prefaced by an interminable DJ set.

But Minaj, who kicked off her 30-date world outing March 1 and has produced a string of arena sellouts since, is undiminished in her vitality and spunkiness.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

From the moment she rose from underneath the stage floor, draped in white from the waist down and sporting a metallic top for the confident tone-setter “I’m the Best,” Minaj, 41, oozed coolness.

More: Nicki Minaj Pink Friday 2 tour: See the setlist for her career-spanning concert

Gag City is Nicki Minaj’s Oz

For her first U.S. run in eight years, Minaj has crafted her most grandiose production: a slick, vibrant beauty of staircases, tiers, towering video panels and a lengthy catwalk to allow her plenty of room to strut.

It’s a Nicki-fied Oz, a neon playground on which she and her dancers could exact the rhythms of new tracks such as “FTCU,” “Barbie Dangerous” and “Cowgirl” with style.

The fictionalized Gag City – an idea created by fans using artificial intelligence for the arrival of last year’s “Pink Friday 2” album – was brought to reality in the form of a cityscape outlined in fuchsia for some songs and black and red for others.

During the alluring Asian-themed segment offering “Chun-Li” and the percussive “Ruby Red da Sleeze,” Minaj ducked into a phone booth for a quick change – a la Clark Kent – from her hooded robe to a long, pink wig (one of many she would sport throughout the night).

Nicki Minaj loves to play with fans

Minaj is endlessly entertaining to watch. She might drop into a marionette pose in “Win Again” or grind against the stage floor and literally engage in the lyrics of “Feeling Myself.”

Her gift is to go from spitting daggers to turning coquettish, and she says as much with her alluring eyes as her pointed lyrics, which her fans devour.

Those devotees – affectionately dubbed “The Barbz” – turned the arena into a sea of salmon-colored fashion, from cowgirl hats to crop tops, boots to glittery shorts.

But more than their visuals, the crowd clearly worshipped Minaj’s every movement, especially her stings that landed with a smile.

Late in the show, Minaj handed her microphone to several audience members to sing the refrain of “The Night is Still Young.” She jokingly scolded their off-key renditions with typical side eye, but broke into spontaneous gyrations and a grin when one fan instead sang, “Nicki is still young!”

Before that inspirational anthem, Minaj addressed the crowd with her usual candor.

“People want money and they want cars and they want houses … and they ain’t got no peace. So what does it mean? I’d rather peace in the projects building. ‘Cause when you’ve got peace, you can think. And when you can think, you can prosper,” she told the cheering throng.

Nicki Minaj’s concert guests are great, but slow momentum

A handful of songs into her set, Minaj rolled into “Beep Beep,” a heaping serving of drums, pyro and 50 Cent.

The superstar rapper strolled out in a white baseball cap, jeans and a sparkly blue jacket to match Minaj’s outfit of the moment for the song – featured on the deluxe version of “Pink Friday 2” – before taking over the stage during a Minaj costume change.

His smile gleaming and his spirit apparently soaring, 50 Cent steered the crowd through singalongs of several hits including “What Up Gangsta,” “P.I.M.P.” and the inevitable “In Da Club.”

His presence was certainly welcome, but, like the mid-set performance from Monica and the too-long artsy videos that segued each thematic act, it impaired the momentum of the show.

It’s gracious of Minaj to cede the spotlight to Monica for a deserved platform than mere opening act, and she indeed sounded flawless on “So Gone” and “Before You Walk Out of My Life” and looked luminous in her floor-length pink coat.

But while her set didn’t siphon attention from Minaj, it did incur a tonal shift.

Still, Minaj is the Queen of Rap for a reason, and she soon reclaimed the stage with her unbridled sass.
