13 Best Things To Do in Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach Boardwalk and Beachfront Virginia Beach Boardwalk and Beachfront free

Instead of traditional wooden planks, Virginia Beach's famous boardwalk is concrete. The 3-mile thoroughfare is lined with quaint benches, Colonial-style street lamps, and biking and walking paths. The boardwalk also hosts various events and festivals at different points throughout the year, though street performers can be found entertaining passersby on most days. And similar to other East Coast beach destinations, you will find various restaurants and hotels along the boardwalk, as well as a white sand beach.

Travelers enjoy walking along this beautiful boardwalk year-round, citing its fun atmosphere and well-maintained paths as highlights. Several visitors recommend checking out the 24-foot-tall King Neptune statue, which sits by the beach at the Neptune Festival Park entrance on 31st Street. And if you visit in winter, some say you can't miss the attraction's holiday light display.

First Landing State Park First Landing State Park

The most visited park in Virginia is First Landing State Park, where the Jamestown colonists first landed in the New World in 1607. Today, it is a nice getaway from the shoreline crowds and a fantastic spot for enjoying the great outdoors. Be prepared to hike, camp, swim, bike, or just picnic and watch the squirrels run around. The park features 20 miles of trails and 1½ miles of beach on its 2,888 acres of scenic land.

Past visitors loved walking along this park's well-maintained trails, adding that the paths are relatively easy to trek. However, a few travelers said some trails lack adequate markers, so download the park's trail map or ask a park ranger for detailed directions to avoid getting lost.

Sandbridge Beach Sandbridge Beach free

Virginia Beach's main stretch of sand is situated next to its boardwalk , so if you're looking for a quieter beach option with fewer tourists, head 15 miles south of the city's resort area to Sandbridge Beach. This 5-mile swath of sand dunes, sea grass and shoreline lures swimmers and surfers, as well as families who desire more elbow room and close proximity to the area's vacation rentals. The beach also sits near Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge (where you can look for sea turtles and various bird species) and False Cape State Park (a protected area best explored by kayak, on foot or by bike).

According to recent beachgoers, this peaceful beach is beautiful and relaxing. In fact, a few previous visitors said its sunrises and sunsets are some of the best you'll see on the East Coast. Others appreciated the facilities (think: restrooms, picnic pavilions, sports courts, a playground and a fishing pier) found at Little Island Park, which is located at the southern end of the beach.

Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center

The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, located a mile south of the downtown resort area, offers more than 300 hands-on marine exhibits, including two animal touch pools with stingrays and horseshoe crabs. Visitors can get up close to turtles, sharks, otters and Komodo dragons; the property also features an oyster reef, nature trail, a ropes course, zip line area and a 3D theater that screens educational films and Hollywood movies.

According to recent visitors, families will love exploring this fun attraction, although a few said that the property's admissions are high given its small size. Some also cautioned that older children may lose interest in the aquarium's exhibits.

Cape Henry Lighthouse Cape Henry Lighthouse

Just north of  First Landing State Park  is Cape Henry Lighthouse, the first lighthouse ever authorized by Congress. The attraction still has connections with the government; located on the grounds of the Fort Story military base, you'll have to show ID (either a REAL ID Act-compliant driver's license or a passport) at the property's entrance. The brick lighthouse was constructed in the 1790s and was an important step for trade along the Virginia and Maryland coasts, as it made the Chesapeake Bay easier and safer to navigate.

Overall, many visitors enjoyed exploring this historic attraction, though they mentioned there aren't many other attractions in the area. Several were quick to praise the lighthouse's "amazing" views at the top and said that the climb up was fairly easy, although seniors and young kids may have a hard time.

Military Aviation Museum Military Aviation Museum

History buffs and aviation enthusiasts alike will love checking out the Military Aviation Museum. As its name suggests, this museum is packed with military aircraft (more specifically, World War I- and World War II-era airplanes), which have been restored to their prewar condition. Noteworthy items from the private collection include a de Havilland Mosquito (a plane that's primarily made of wood) and a Messerschmitt ME 262 (the world's first jet-powered fighter plane).

Past visitors said this impressive museum offers a great assortment of planes, adding that the docent-led tour of the hangars (which is covered by the property's entrance fee) can't be missed. For an extra charge, travelers can go for a ride in one of the planes, but these flights cost as much as $375 per person and are only available between early April and late October. Another way to see some of the planes in action is to attend one of the museum's air shows, which are typically held on weekends.

Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge free

Sometimes, all you want is a little peace, and when you're in Virginia Beach, the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is the place to find it. Previous visitors lauded the refuge's serene atmosphere and said they encountered very few other people while exploring. Though you may not encounter other humans at the refuge, you'll see your fair share of animals, whether it be herons, ducks, swans or sea turtles. The more than 9,200-acre refuge offers several easy to moderate hiking trails that will bring you past wetlands, sand dunes and whispering sea grass, as well as pine forests full of critters.

The refuge, located just past Sandbridge Beach , is open daily from dawn to dusk. The visitor center is generally open daily from 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Note that the visitor center does close seasonally. Entrance is free from November through March, but if you're visiting in the warmer months, you'll have to pay a small fee. Entrance costs $5 for a single vehicle or $2 per person entering on foot. Parking is free, and spots are open on a first-come, first-served basis. Visitors should note that pets (aside from service animals) are not allowed to enter the refuge. There is a refuge visitor center open from Tuesday to Saturday during the summer (Memorial Day to Labor Day) season, and it offers indoor restrooms. To start planning your visit to the wildlife refuge, see the official website .

Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art free

This museum brings a taste of culture to Virginia Beach with rotating art displays showcasing paintings, sculptures, photography and digital media projects. Hands-on exhibition areas and diverse, rotating displays make each trip to this museum unique. Notable past exhibitions include "Shifting Gaze: A Reconstruction of The Black & Hispanic Body in Contemporary Art," which touched on race and identity through a wide array of media, and "Echard Wheeler: In Stillness," a photography exhibit showcasing the history of nearby First Landing State Park .

Though the museum is mainly geared toward adults, there are some kid-friendly aspects, such as ARTlab – an interactive space where children can get a better understanding of the themes displayed in the artwork. Previous visitors said the museum was smaller than they expected, but that they still enjoyed the exhibits and appreciated the friendly staff.

The Old Beach Farmers Market, which is held on Saturday mornings, is also a great place to explore. Recent visitors said they loved experiencing the district's busy streets and browsing stands from local artists, adding it's definitely worth getting out of the car if you're just driving through the area.

There are many exciting events held in the district throughout the year. The annual Mural Festival comes around each August and brings 10 artists to the city to paint 10 new pieces over 10 days. And, each April, visitors can experience the Art of Humanity event, which features live music, face painting, and discussions to promote peace and nonviolence.

Ocean Breeze Waterpark Ocean Breeze Waterpark

Once your kids have had their fill of the sand, consider a family trip to Ocean Breeze Waterpark. The park offers slides and rides galore, as well as an area for little swimmers, which features tamer splash zones and small inner tubes to ride. A lazy river, a wave pool and plenty of water park snacks like funnel cakes, candy and slushies, round out the park's offerings.

Previous visitors said Ocean Breeze was a great place to spend a hot day, and that children enjoyed all the rides. Reviewers also appreciated the park's overall cleanliness and felt the staff was welcoming and helpful when supervising children.

Virginia Beach is one of Virginia’s most popular tourist destinations. And why not? Its three-mile, 28-foot wide boardwalk on the Atlantic makes it one of the best beach vacations on the east coast.  But as fabulous as it is, Virginia Beach is only one of the dozens of amazing Virginia beaches in the state.

And though Virginia Beach is the most famous beach, sometimes you don’t want the hassle and expense of traveling there. You want Virginia beaches closer to home or better for nature lovers.

Lucky for us, there are plenty of other incredible Virginia beaches for a day of swimming, sunning, fishing, kayaking, or just relaxing by the water . So whether you live in DC, Richmond, or Charlottesville, we guarantee you’ll find a beach in our ultimate guide to Virginia beaches for good times and tan lines!

Our guide is broken down by region, and the beaches are alphabetically arranged.

Table of contents

  • Southside Hampton Roads Beaches: The Best of the Best in Virginia Beaches

Peninsula Hampton Roads Beaches: Beautiful and Hassle-Free Virginia Beaches

Central & Northern Virginia Beaches: A DC or Richmond Day Trip

Eastern shore beaches: virginia beaches for the nature lover, now that you know, it’s time to go, southside hampton roads virginia beaches: the best of the best in virginia beaches.

White sandy beaches of southern Hampton Roads, Virginia.

Southside Hampton Roads has world-class Virginia beaches and all the amenities that go with that. So if you’re looking for a “true” beach vacation with huge sandy beaches, surfing, parasailing, exciting nightlife, and water sports, this is where you want to be.

Southside of Hampton Roads beaches map.

Chic’s Beach

People are playing volleyball on the beach.

3656 Shore Dr. Virginia Beach, VA 23455

Parking: Parking spaces are sparse. You can sometimes find free street parking if you come late or early in the day. Parking is easier to find the further you are willing to walk. A parking lot under the Lesner Bridge has a bathroom and outdoor showers.

This is a hidden gem that most tourists don’t know about. Because it’s on the bay rather than the ocean, the surf is calmer and excellent for kayaking and paddle boards. Small children can swim safely here without worrying about big waves or strong currents.

An excellent beach for swimming, walking, sports, and dolphin watching. Feel free to bring Fido after Labor Day.

Insider tip : Buoy 44 Seafood Grill has excellent food and drinks with the best water views off its outdoor deck.  Complimentary valet parking.

Amenities Quick Look

  • Fishing and boat launches are nearby.
  • Restaurants
  • Portable toilets along the beach
  • Dog friendly on the off-season

Croatan Beach

A beach for surfers

920 Vanderbilt Ave, Virginia Beach, VA 23451

Parking: Lot close to the beach. $7 in season, credit cards only. If the lot is full, there is no other parking since this is in a residential area.

Croatan Beach is primarily a surfer’s beach that stretches from the Rudee Inlet to Dam Neck Navy Base. However, swimming is allowed. If you or your kids want to learn to surf the waves, this is the beach to hit!

No restaurants or stores are nearby, so bring everything you need, including food, water, and beach gear.

Insider tip : Learn to surf at the Seth Brody School of Surf . They offer summer surfing camps and private lessons.  From their website: Seth’s surf camp is top-notch, loads of fun, and is a great way to learn how to surf!

  • Basic bath house with outdoor showers only
  • Lifeguards, in season
  • Famous for surfing lessons.
  • Pets are permitted before 10 am and after 6 pm.

Waves hitting the shore.

1977 Terrier Ave. Bldg. 531. Virginia Beach, VA 23461

Parking: Large, paved, free parking lot.

The beach at Dam Neck is open only to those with access to military bases. This is a beautiful beach with everything you need for a spectacular day without the crowds or expense of Virginia Beach.

Giant waves, an expansive white sand beach, lifeguards, and extensive amenities make this a no-brainer for military families.  Bathrooms, changing areas, and outdoor showers are available.

Insider tip: Parking is never an issue, but get there before 10 am for the best slots in the shade.

  • Two picnic areas close
  • Shopette across the street for food, drink, and ice.
  • Chairs, umbrellas, and water sports equipment rentals are available at the Dune’s Wagon .
  • Recreational lodging and RV lots are available.

False Cape State Park

A person is walking at sunrise on the beach.

4001 Sandpiper Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23456

Parking: No public access with vehicles into the park. Parking is available at the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge visitors center but fills quickly in the summer. Additional/overnight parking is available at Little Island City Park.

Surrounded by water on two sides, Back Bay to the West and the mighty Atlantic to the East.

False Cape State Park is the last bastion of undeveloped land along the Atlantic coast. More than any other in Virginia, this park offers the opportunity for guests to experience nature in a purely primitive setting.

The park reaches back to a time when the land, beach, and sea weren’t developed, with time seemingly standing still here. When you plan a visit, you will first realize that you can’t drive to the park, much less hit up a store for a snack or some concessions. You can only access the park by foot, bicycle, boat, or tram. Bring what you need because you likely won’t find it here.

The weather can be unpredictable, so you should be prepared. What you also will find in abundance is sunshine and insects. So sunscreen and repellent should be on your list of what to bring.

Six miles of the Atlantic Ocean-facing shoreline is an excellent place to participate in a guided kayak tour or experience primitive camping. The area is rich with hiking and biking trails for those who like to take every bit of the scenery in. Bringing your four-legged companion is alright, but you are discouraged from bringing them through Back Bay.

Insider tip:  If you’d like to see the park’s Barbour Hill area and the historic Wash Woods site, you can take the tram from the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The 4-hour ride will take you throughout the wildlife refuge.

  • Bring water since there aren’t many options in the park for fresh water.
  • Kayaking trips

First Landing State Park

Boardwalk to the beach.

2500 Shore Dr, Virginia Beach, VA 23451

Parking: $7 weekdays, $10 weekends

With so many state parks to choose from in Virginia , it may be surprising that First Landing State Park is the most visited across the commonwealth. It’s no wonder when you realize this park is a whopping 2,888 acres. That’s 1.5 miles of beautiful sandy beach with 20 miles of trails for off-beach exercise and exploring.

This is another park where English colonists explored back in 1607. Not sure why they didn’t settle here, but I’m sure it was a close second to Jamestown. These waterways have seen it all, from Native American canoes to Colonial settlers to modern-day cargo ships.

The landscape of First Landing varies greatly, offering guests many educational and recreational activities. You’ll find unusual habitats like bald cypress swamps, a maritime forest, lagoons, and rare plants and wildlife.

If you’re looking to stay longer than a day, the park has campsites in various forms. You can rent a cabin or yurt, water, and hook-up campsites. You can even bring your boat and use the various boat ramps. If you forgot anything, you could pop into the camp store to meet those last-minute needs.

Insider tip:   As you might expect, weekends tend to be high visitation days. There will be delays, and guests will be turned away once the lot is full. So show up early and enjoy your day at one of the premiere beach spots in Virginia.

  • Water and electric hook-up campsites
  • Tent campsites
  • Picnic area

Little Creek Beach

Calm water near the beach

Beach Drive on Little Creek Amphibious Navy Base, Virginia Beach, VA  23455

Parking: Free parking lot at the beach

This is an excellent beach for anyone with access to a military base.  It’s a child and pet-friendly beach with gentle waves and shallow water. You’ll enjoy swimming, sunning, playing volleyball, or exercising on this uncrowded white sand beach!

The base has a Wendy’s and a NEX store for food or drink. There are no amenities for food or drink close to the beach.

Insider tip: Once your time in the sun is over or you need a break, head to the Gator Bowling Center for indoor fun. This is the largest Navy bowling center in the Hampton Roads area boasting 32 lanes and a full snack bar and games.

  • Parking nearby
  • Easy Access
  • Typically uncrowded
  • Beach volleyball
  • Limited shade, so bring an umbrella and some sunscreen
  • Restroom and showers
  • Pet-friendly all year

Fort Story Beach

Beach with a lighthouse on it.

The Main Gate is off Shore Drive, where it becomes Atlantic Ave. Open 24 hours.

Parking: Free parking in multiple lots

Accessing this beach is easiest if you are an active or retired military member with an ID. But don’t fret if you aren’t. You can go through the guest entrance, and once the guards are satisfied at the gate, away you go.

Once through the gate, you can visit two lighthouses nearby one another. The older one is inland a bit more than the other. The new one has 192 steps from bottom to top. Great views of the two historic and beautiful lighthouses can be seen from the beach.

Guests have reported seeing dolphins and whales from the shoreline. Plenty of trash cans to help you dispose of garbage. You can check out the spot where the Jamestown colonists first landed their vessels in North America in the early 1600s.

As a civilian, you need to ensure your vehicle is inspected for access to the base and have proof of insurance, registration, and of course, your driver’s license.

Insider tip: If the weather turns sideways or you need to get out of the sun for a while, check out Flipper McCoys , just a short ride down Atlantic Blvd. You can play laser tag and classic arcade games to your heart’s content.

  • Portable toilets
  • No beach concessions

Little Island Park

People enjoy the beach by swimming and sunning.

Address: 3820 Sandpiper Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23456

Parking: $5

Little Island Park is a lesser-known beach spot a bit further south than the beach in Sandbridge on Virginia’s shoreline. This sizable 122-acre beach park is technically still in Sandbridge, and you’ll find it a stone’s throw north of the Back Bay Wildlife Refuge. The 400 ft fishing pier is a big draw, but so is the 775-foot beach earmarked for surfing. Sunbathers, swimmers, and fishermen can enjoy the 2,000-foot beach on the pier’s south side without worries about surfers coming their way.

The brackish waters of Back Bay are great for fishing and crabbing on the park’s western side. You will not need a Virginia Saltwater Fishing License to fish from the Fishing Pier, but you will need one to fish from the beach. You must pay a fee to use the pier from May through October. Service dogs are the only four-legged friends permitted on the pier.

With just a photo ID, you can check out some sports equipment from the park office to liven up your visit.

Insider tip: If you plan to stay at this Virginia beach for a while, pack a cooler with food and drinks; there isn’t much nearby.

  • Public restrooms
  • Picnic shelters with grills
  • Lighted tennis courts
  • Pickleball court
  • Basketball courts
  • Volleyball court and beach volleyball
  • Canoe/Kayak launch – Seasonal parking fees may apply.
  • Public use AED

Oceanview Beach Park

Waves crashing on the beach

100 W Ocean View Avenue Norfolk, VA 23503

Parking: Parking lot available at the Ocean View Beach park, street parking for other areas as designated

While Oceanview Beach in Virginia covers a large swath of oceanfront, its 6.5-acre beach park is where most of the action is. Parking is most accessible here instead of street parking in other areas, which can be tough to score.

A park highlight is the band shell used for presentations and live entertainment. Every Sunday night from 7 pm – 9 pm, you can catch Big Bands on the Bay from late May through early September. Expect to feel your toes tapping, leading you to dance to the sounds of the Big Band era.

It’s not all just music, either. You’ll find an array of themed parties and family movie nights in July and August. Lots to do to start your weekend on Friday nights with kids’ activities, food, drinks, and some cornhole too. Oceanview Golf Course is right around the corner too!

Insider tip: Even without seaside concessions, a short walk from the beach will get you to one of many restaurants, groceries, and convenience stores nearby.

  • Restrooms are located at Ocean View Beach Park, but it’s harder to find a restroom along the southern parts of the beach, which are behind hotels and other real estate.
  • Trash cans are scattered along the beachfront
  • Lifeguards in season
  • Handicap access ramp
  • Open green space

Sandbridge Beach

Deserted beach with sand in Virginia

2549 Sandfiddler Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23456

Parking: Parking fees are charged from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. Two parking areas fill up fast, so arrive early to minimize parking hassles.

Sandbridge Beach may be the place for you if you’re looking for a beautiful beach without the fanfare of a boardwalk and vendors. While the beach has been here for eons, the facility is newer with its parking area, restrooms, foot washes, and shower, plus a nice changing area, so there is no need for a Superman wardrobe change in your back seat.

Once parked, you can walk across the street for easy beach access. The restrooms are available from March through September from 8 am to sunset. If you visit during the cooler weather, portable toilets provide relief.

For an in depth dive into this great beach check out our blog Sandbridge Beach in Virginia: A Best-Kept Secret.

Insider tip: When done for the day at the beach, a short 20 min ride northwest will take you to the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center , a great place to stop for all ages. There’s even the Adventure Park alongside the aquarium for those with energy to burn.

  • Outdoor shower
  • Changing area
  • Bring what you need, but there are some concessions
  • MWR beach equipment rentals
  • Portable restrooms available during the off-season

Virginia Beach

The best of Virginia beaches, Virginia Beach. Resort beach with sunbathers

2100 Parks Avenue, Virginia Beach, VA 23451

Parking: Parking along side streets where indicated and some lots like Rudy Loop, 2nd Street Parking, 31st Street Public Parking Garage, and 4th Street Municipal Lot.

This is the granddaddy of them all. If there were any beach in Virginia that deserved rock star status based on recognition alone, it would be Virginia Beach. This beachfront rivals other states’ best up and down the East Coast. The boardwalk at the Oceanfront is a landmark, the widest and longest in the state at 28 ft wide and an entire 3 miles long. It will take you from 2nd Street to 40th, a great place to exercise on foot or a bit faster over on the bike path.

During the summer, you can catch some live entertainment at one of the four stages at the oceanfront, 7th, 17th, 24th, and 31st Streets. Some major acts come into town, so plan your trip to Virginia Beach Oceanfront with that in mind.

Virginia Beach is no different from most large beach cities because it has endless restaurants and shops, including bike and beach gear rentals. There is plenty to see and do off the beach, with multiple nautical sculptures, including King Neptune’s bronze likeness standing at an imposing 24 ft.

King Neptune welcomes guests to the 31st Street Neptune Festival Park. Get your selfie with the King!

Insider tip: Wind down your day off the beach at the Tarnished Truth Distilling Co. in the historic Cavalier Hotel. The first and only craft distillery you’ll find in a luxury hotel in the US.

  • Beach gear rentals and extensive amenities

Willoughby Beach

Flower on the beach

11th View Street Norfolk, Virginia 23503

Parking: Street-side parking and the Ocean View Fishing Pier near the southern part of Willoughby Beach.

Known for its excellent fishing and sunsets, Willoughby Beach offers plenty with a relaxing non-boardwalk experience. There are not many amenities, but if you bring enough supplies, you should have a great beach experience buffeted by the local restaurants and convenience stores.

Insider tip: A great place for lunch is just down the road at the OV Beach Tavern . The firepit and strung-up lights will invite you in; you’ll love the atmosphere and the eats.

There aren’t many amenities along the beach, but the Oceanview Fishing Pier offers a bar and restaurant when you’re ready for a break from the sand.

Here’s a secret everyone who lives in the Tidewater area of Virginia knows–the Peninsula Virginia beaches are incredible! Free parking, fewer crowds, warmer water, excellent swimming, and white sand beaches add up to a fun and hassle-free experience.

No, you can’t surf, and there isn’t any nightlife to speak of. But if you’re coming down from Richmond or the Charlottesville area and don’t want to deal with the Bridge-Tunnels (if you know, you know), these are the beaches for you.

Parking: Free parking lots and street parking as marked, plus overflow parking with shuttle at Jones Magnet Middle School, 1819 Nickerson Boulevard

Located just 2 miles from I-64, Buckroe Beach and Park offers fantastic views of the Chesapeake Bay along its nearly mile-long stretch of beach. Recently receiving a facelift, Buckroe is an attractive and amenity-heavy beach location. The concrete boardwalk is wide and inviting for those looking for exercise or a stroll. And the separate bike path allows for those who want to move at a quicker pace.

You’ll find lifeguards on duty from 10 am to 6 pm Memorial Day through Labor Day. Families can relax and stay the day with a bathhouse and portable toilets close by. A large fenced playground can break up the beach activities for the kids, and there are three picnic shelters with grills available for rent.

Insider tip: What’s old is new again! If you’ve been to Buckroe before and weren’t impressed, it’s worth another look after the city poured quite a bit of money into the area with a hefty revitalization. Fewer issues with traffic and parking are plentiful, a great alternative to southside Virginia beaches.

The Fort is a treasure trove of history and can be explored for free. See Old Point Comfort Lighthouse !

Bird watching is on the agenda for those looking for a more leisurely activity, with 89 species of birds throughout the Fort. Nature lovers will love 249 species of flora and nine species of trees.

Grandview Beach

Aerial of a long stretch of sandy beach.

State Park Drive Hampton, VA 23664

Parking: There is no parking near the beach itself, but you can park along the right side of State Park Drive.

.40 of a mile walk through the beautiful marshland from where you park on State Park Dr. At the Grandview Nature Preserve, you’ll find a natural open beach that will make you feel like you’ve been shipwrecked with miles of quiet shoreline. That is until the F-22 Raptors inbound to Langley Air Force Base scream on by. The sound of freedom!

This is one hidden beach if you don’t know it’s there. While parking is sparse, it’s worth the hassle and the short hike to the beach. Bring everything you’ll need because all you will find are seashells, birds, and other quiet beach seekers.

Insider tip: Since you won’t find anything but residential property near Grandview, your last stop for supplies is the 7-11 on Beach Road as you make your way toward the water. Before that, Fox Hill had a grocery store and fast food.

  • Bring it if you’ll need it because there aren’t any amenities on this beach.
  • There are trash cans at the end of the walk to the beach.

Huntington Beach

Sunset at the beach with clouds on the horizon.

361 Hornet Circle  Newport News, VA 23607

Parking: Large lot for vehicles and boat trailers

Huntington Beach is one of the few west-facing beaches in Virginia, making it an awesome location for viewing a beach sunset. With 60 acres, some of which is the public beach on the James River, Huntington Park offers visitors a wide variety of activities.

You will find a tremendous beachfront with lifeguards and concessions, a vast playground (13,000 square feet), and twenty tennis courts. That’s not all! The property is also home to the Virginia War Museum, which showcases memorabilia from the Revolutionary War right up until today.

A public boat ramp is accessible year-round to allow for water sports and fishing. Speaking of fishing, the fishing pier, which parallels the James River Bridge, you well out into the James with its long reach of over half a mile long. For those wanting a relaxing activity, the Rose Garden, with its 45 varieties, is a beautiful place to slow things down.

Insider tip: The closest and frankly fantastic place to grab lunch or dinner with a view is near the beach at Crab Shack on the James . Situated at the foot of the fishing pier, you won’t have any trouble finding it and will love the catch of the day, burgers, and cocktails.

Aerial view of the beach with a pier and buildings

425 Water Street, Yorktown, VA 23690

Parking: Free parking in several lots, a garage near the beach, and a free trolley to get you to the beach from the further away lots.

Not a large beach at only 2 acres, but for what Yorktown Virginia Beach lacks in size, it makes up for in beauty. And that beauty is wrapped up in its location. Situated near the foot of The Coleman Bridge in historic Yorktown, this gorgeous beach has everything mere steps away.

Parking is in abundance, with food and drink just across the road. And for those with wheelchairs, this beach features a Mobi-Mat and a Mobi-Chair to make the beach universally accessible.

Not only is the beach handicap accessible, but so is the fishing pier. Everyone can participate in the fun at Yorktown Beach, making it a significant draw.

Beach equipment can be rented, including paddle boats, kayaks, and bikes which can be ridden on the bike path.

Tickets can be booked on-site or before a visit with the Schooner Alliance for a sailing adventure on the York River.

Insider tip: This tip won’t take long cause it’s a winner, hands down. The Yorktown Pub off the beach is a fantastic place to grab lunch, dinner, or drinks. It can get wild at night. You won’t be disappointed!

Four beaches with surf and sand.

Central and Northern Virginia are known for many things.  But Virginia beaches are not one of them. That doesn’t mean there aren’t some worth visiting when you can only fit in a day trip. We have a few gems on our list that are worth the drive–especially for nature lovers!

Aquia Landing Park

Daytime at the beach with calm water

2846 Brooke Road, Stafford, VA

Parking: Fee: Residents: $3 Youth/Seniors and $4 Adults; Non-residents: $4.50 Youth/Seniors and $6.50 Adults

Just a 25-minute drive from Fredericksburg, Aquia Landing Park is a popular swimming location at the mouth of Aquia Creek.  This 32-acre park is also a go-to fishing spot for locals and a great place to take a nature hike. The marsh, which borders the park’s entrance, teems with various birds, including rails and songbirds. The park is not all marshes, and you’ll find the wooded portions just as attractive and filled with breeding and migrant songbirds.

Visitors near the creek channel should also watch for the waterfowl. Terns and gulls find the area good for dinner, so fishermen may have some clever competition.

Insider tip: If you should be headed north after visiting Aquia Landing Park, stop and enjoy some time at the Potomac Point Winery . This European estate will make you feel like you’re far from DC when you’re just an hour away. Great wine, great food, and a great stop!

  • Bird watching

Bethel Beach Natural Area Preserve

Natural beach with a sandbar and water beyond.

State Rte 609, Onemo, VA 23130

Parking: gravel parking area on site

The Bethel Beach Natural Area Preserve is located in Mathews County and a five-mile ride east from downtown Matthews. This area is primarily made up of sandy shoreline, which suits avid Virginia beachgoers but also contains some low dune and salt marsh habitats.

The evolving landscape makes for a different experience each time you visit. Sand is moved by the winds and water, resulting in a dynamically changing habitat along the slender beach. The strong currents of the Chesapeake Bay combined with storms have continually shaped portions of the shoreline.

This landscape is inviting for some rare colonial and marsh nesting birds, so bird-watching enthusiasts will wholly enjoy themselves. Grab your swimsuit and binoculars and spend some time exploring the preserve.

Insider tip: A unique opportunity nearby lies with Bay Fly Fishing . Whether you’d like to try saltwater fly fishing or fish like the big boys in the open water, Bay Fly Fishing can set you up for a full day or reel in the big ones.

  • No restrooms or trash cans on site, so whatever you bring, kindly take with you.
  • Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash.

Hawthorn St, Colonial Beach, VA 22443

Parking: Parking is available for $2 an hour from midnight to 11:59 pm. If you plan to stay a whole day, the rate is $20 per day. If you need to make a quick stop or run into a shop, there are free 15-minute parking spaces scattered throughout the retail areas.

The town of Colonial Beach is situated on the western side of the Potomac River, just across from Cobb Island. As the town’s name would lead you to believe, Colonial Beach is a hot spot for sun worshiping and water activities.

This town of almost four thousand year-round residents is home to not one beach but five, yes, five beaches; North Beach, Downtown Boardwalk Beach, Irving Avenue Beach, Castlewood Beach, and The Pointe Beach.

These beaches make up close to a mile and a half of the town’s waterfront, and each offers something a bit different from the next.

North Beach is located at Colonial Avenue, North of Riverboat on the Potomac. Here you’ll find the atmosphere quieter and the beach more secluded while still being close to the energy and activity of the Boardwalk.

Downtown Boardwalk Beach can be found laterally on Taylor Street. This is the spot where all the action is. Here you’ll find a bathhouse, water sport rentals, swings, the Town Pier, and places to eat and shop.

Irving Avenue Beach can be found where Beach Terrace and Irving Avenue intersect.

This beach is in a more residential area and is where you will find quite a few vacation rentals, Airbnb’s, restrooms, and for the history buffs, the Cannon War Memorial.

Castlewood Beach can be found at the southern end of Irving Avenue. Here you’ll find a dog park and Castlewood Park, which has many amenities like restrooms, picnic tables, benches, and places for the kids to play.

The Pointe Beach can be found at the southernmost tip of Colonial Beach. You’ll be close to the Dockside Restaurant & Tiki Bar and the Colonial Beach Yacht Center.

While the beaches may all be a bit different, the same rules apply to all town beaches.

  • No grills/fires
  • No littering
  • No golf carts or vehicles on the beach
  • No fishing on the beach between 10 am and 6 pm

Haven Beach

The Ultimate Guide: 36 Breathtaking Virginia Beaches to Visit Haven Beach

2846 Haven Beach Rd

Parking: Limited parking lot with ten spaces.  Street parking is available.

Directly due east from Mathews, VA , you will find a gem of a beach in Haven Beach. This is yet another beach on the Chesapeake Bay but with less fanfare and amenities. For those looking for a more secluded beach, this one is for you. Here you’ll find a soft sandy bottomed shoreline with designated swimming areas, making it great for families.

This is another area for the nature lovers and bird watchers in your group. The marshes, tidal lagoon, and plenty of shrubberies make for excellent habitats for many shorebirds and other creatures. The deeper water and fewer rocks will make for a better experience, so hang a left just past the main entrance and get your fill of the wildlife.

Insider tip: If you want to get out on top of the water instead of in it, arrange a trip with nearby Bay Creek Kayaking . Enjoy coastal Virginia at a relaxed pace, open daily to fit your schedule.

Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve

virginia beach driving tour

Balls Neck Road Kilmarnock, VA 22482

Parking: Parking for 11 cars only, so it’s tight. There aren’t any other options, so if it’s full you’ll have to be patient and wait for a spot to open up.

You will find Hughlett Point Nature Area Preserve near Ingram Bay on the Chesapeake. This is another quiet natural beach great for those who like a low-key shoreline experience. There isn’t much here but the tidal and non-tidal wetlands, undeveloped beaches, upland forests, and dunes. This setting will suit the nature lover to a tee.

The federally threatened northeastern beach tiger beetle ( Cicindela dorsalis dorsalis ) thrives here along with migrating waterfowl and songbirds who winter here. Bald eagles, northern harriers, and ospreys can be seen hunting here, so be sure to bring your binoculars.

Insider tip: For a great meal after exploring, check out a local favorite at KC’s Crabs & Cues . Tasty locally caught entrees and six billiard tables, a great combination in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

Parking: plenty of parking nearby

The Jamestown Beach Event Park is a stone’s throw from the historic Jamestown Settlement. This family and the dog-friendly beach opens daily at 8 am and closes at sunset. And as a handicap-accessible park, guests will find an ADA-accessible walkway, parking, restrooms, outdoor rinse stations, and a beach mat that can bring everyone to the river’s edge.

Insider tip: The obvious add-on to a trip to Jamestown, Virginia beach would be Colonial Williamsburg, but another wallet-friendly bit of fun is right there near the beach. The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry is a fun and free way to get out onto and across the James River to Surry. The ferry runs 7-days a week year-round.

Parking: $10 on weekdays and weekends

Beautiful Leesylvania State Park juts out into the Potomac River as a peninsula. The home for Native Americans for thousands of years, this park has quite a rich history. Not long after landing in Jamestown, Capt. John Smith stopped in the area in 1608 as he explored the Chesapeake Bay.

Leesylvania can be found on the National Register of Historic Landmarks, but it’s not just a museum-type location. This park offers many activities like hiking, picnicking, swimming, fishing, and boating. For those who like to take their activity up a notch, there is a 20-station fitness trail to tackle.

Island in the Chesapeake Bay accessible by ferry from towns on the mainland

Parking: no need to worry about that

If you were looking for the most beautiful diamond among all the gems, Tangier Island’s Beach is that shiny diamond. You’re already off to a great start being on an island with so much water around you, a postcard in every direction.

The island is made up of a series of sandbars. You may be surprised to find some houses in the grassy ridges and among the tidal marshes between those ridges. At the southern tip, you’ll find an ever-growing beach thanks to the sands left behind by the ocean as it pushes into the Chesapeake Bay.

The white sand and clear, blue-green water make this beach stunning. You’ll almost forget you’re in a Virginia bay. Since it’s relatively isolated, it remains in a natural sandy state with just a bit of boardwalk to get you across the tidal marsh on foot.

You can take the Tangier Ferry from Onancock Wharf, which leaves daily at 10 am and 5 pm. There are golf cart and bicycle rentals if you want to get around the island a bit quicker, but on foot, you’ll be able to take in the scenery a bit at a time. Check out the shops and grab a bite to eat and enjoy.

Insider tip: A unique activity while at Tangier Island is Kayak Through the Trails of Tangier . A big bonus is that you can free borrow a kayak or canoe from the Tangier Island History Museum. The water trails around the island are a site, so get out on the water if time allows.

  • Large public beach
  • No restrooms or showers
  • Boat or ferry to access the island

Located right where the Potomac River blends with the Chesapeake Bay, Vir-Mar Beach sits waiting for wildlife adventurers who appreciate a quiet shoreline experience. This small beach is an excellent location to catch a glimpse of wintering waterfowl along with terns, osprey, sanderlings, and Monarch butterflies.

Near the parking area is a wooded lot that often hosts an array of fall migrants. And in the summer months, you may experience a chorus of gray and green tree frogs letting their presence be known.

Views of the Smith Island Lighthouse can be seen when the weather is dry and clear, as well as some islands and the shores of Maryland. Once again, this is a beach where your binoculars will get a workout.

Insider tip: Looking for an excellent place for a meal close by after leaving the beach? Look no further than Rancho Viejo Bar & Grill for some great Mexican food and drinks. You’ll find a great menu and fantastic atmosphere at this local favorite.

This is another hidden gem of a small beach on the Rappahannock River near Richmond. The locals may not like us letting the cat out of the bag with this uncrowded beach, but it’s a small treasure, and we think it’s worth a look.

There are no restrooms, so prepare accordingly, but this pristine beach is a must-see. The summer months are a perfect time to visit when taking a dip to cool off is at a premium.

Insider tip: If you’re still looking for something to do close by after your time at the beach, check out the Deltaville Maritime Museum . This museum takes you back to when a giant meteorite hit the Delmarva peninsula 35 million years ago. So much to see and learn. Worth checking out!

Westmoreland State Park

145 Cliff Road, Montross, VA 22520

Westmoreland State Park is a full-service state park that offers more than just a beautiful Virginia beach. Located on the Northern Neck of the Potomac River, this park on the National Register of Historic Places is a well-rounded site with activities for the whole family.

The list of amenities is vast, from the bathhouse to the boat ramp. There is so much to do that staying more than a day is commonplace, with the campground and RV park a welcome sight after a full day.

For those who like to slow it down, a popular activity is hunting for ancient shark teeth, which can be discovered along the shores of the Potomac. There is plenty of fishing off the pier or among the off-shore breakers.

The six miles of trails will take you across various terrain and increase your chances of seeing exciting birds of prey like bald eagles, kingfishers, and ospreys. You may also spot great blue herons, terns, green herons, and other wintering fowl.

If you are looking for a great view of the Potomac, nothing beats the perspective up on Horse Head Cliffs at Murphy Hall. This hall is a fantastic venue if you have a large group and can be reserved well in advance.

Cell phone reception is spotty, but if you have a pressing need, there is WiFi in and around the camp store.

Insider tip: If you’ve yearned for some history, it’s a short drive to Stratford Hall , a National Historic Landmark. These 2,000 acres were the home of the Lee family, dating back to the 1730s. This is a gorgeous estate to roam and explore, open to the public daily.

If you like the beach, I mean A LOT of beaches, nothing beats an island, and Assateague Island’s 37 miles of shoreline is lengthy. While only the bottom third of the island is in Virginia, you can explore across state lines into Maryland on foot. No vehicles are permitted to cross from one district to the other. To access the other part of the island by car, you must drive back to the mainland first.

Most of the island is open year-round, but the VA portion, which falls in the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, has hours that change seasonally. If you visit spring to fall, be prepared for biting flies and mosquitos that can be bothersome. If you bring repellent, this won’t pose much of a problem.

This is a gorgeous place to visit, and be sure to check out the Assateague Lighthouse. It’s the prettiest lighthouse in Virginia and open for tours.

Insider tip: Just a short ride from Assateague Island, you’ll find Assateague Farm for fresh produce, cut flowers, and firewood. Come by and meet Jasmine and Cosmo, the friendly family goats who like to welcome customers.

Luggage Service

No matter where you fly into Virginia, before heading to your beach destination you may need a place to store your luggage before you can check into your hotel, or after you check out of your hotel well before your plane is scheduled to depart. One excellent option I love is a luggage storage service. And there’s no better service than Radical Storage which offers you freedom and peace of mind for as little as $6 a day.

Just find the closest location, book online, store your luggage, and go!

That is a lot of amazing beaches in Virginia. Very inspiring to plan a trip there someday.

I simply can’t believe how many beaches there are in VA. I had no idea. I knew about the big ones and Jamestown and Yorktown but not many of the others you mentioned. I want to see False Cape State Park. It looks so pretty. Definitely saving this for later. Thanks!

I was amazed too when I started researching this blog! Thanks for reading. Appreciate it.

We are beach people and would love to do a road trip and explore the beaches in Virginia. I had no idea about how many there were. Love that there are beaches for everyone. We would pass on the crowded ones. But watching surfers is fun and we would seek out the quieter ones. Some of these beaches are so big I am sure we would find a quiet spot. Glad you provided into on parking since that is often a challenge – especially in busy seasons.

Thanks for reading Linda!

10 Best Road Trips in Virginia

virginia beach driving tour

 Michael Jimenez / Getty Images

A patchwork of scenic natural beauty and abundant cultural and historic sites, Virginia offers many outstanding opportunities to enjoy a road trip or scenic driving tour. In addition to five designated National Scenic Byways, there are several themed heritage and history trails to explore with a day trip, weekend getaway, or full vacation road trip itinerary. Few states in the U.S. can compare to Virginia when it comes to mixing breathtaking landscapes with early American history.

The Blue Ridge Parkway

Pierre Leclerc Photography / Getty Images

Designed as a recreational motor road connecting Shenandoah National Park and Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway is a designated "All-American Road," the highest distinction that is given by the Department of Transportation—meaning the road is unique in the country and is a tourist destination in itself. Following the high crests of the central and southern Appalachian Mountains for 469 miles in Virginia and North Carolina, the Parkway is the most visited unit of the National Park System.

The Virginia portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway is 217 miles long and much of it travels through the George Washington and Jefferson national forests. Popular places to stop in Virginia include a recreated mountain farm near Humpback Rocks, James River, Peaks of Otter, Rocky Knob Mabry Mill (the most photographed Blue Ridge Parkway site), and the Blue Ridge Music Center.

Skyline Drive

Skyline Drive follows a north-south route along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains for 105 miles through Shenandoah National Park and is the only public roadway through the park. One of the country's most picturesque drives, Skyline Drive features 75 overlooks with scenic vistas of the Shenandoah Valley to the west or the gently rolling hills of the Virginia Piedmont to the east.

Travel along Skyline Drive is leisurely with a speed limit of just 35 miles per hour, taking about three hours of driving time from beginning to end in good conditions. Although Shenandoah National Park is open year-round, portions of Skyline Drive sometimes may need to be closed because of inclement weather. There are four entrances to Shenandoah National Park, including Front Royal near Routes 66 and 340, Thornton Gap at Route 211, Swift Run Gap at Route 33, and Rockfish Gap at Routes 64 and 250. The Rockfish Gap entrance is also the northern entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The Colonial Parkway

While only 23 miles long, the Colonial Parkway spans 174 years in terms of colonial history by connecting the historic sites of Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg, and Yorktown, known as America's Historic Triangle . The Parkway is part of Colonial National Historical Park, a multifaceted unit of the National Park Service.

With a speed limit of 45 miles per hour, total travel time to drive the Colonial Parkway is about 50 minutes; however, most visitors will want to spend a day or longer exploring the interesting archeological sites, living history attractions, monuments, and battlefields that this fascinating historic area offers. Other popular things to do include guided tours, hiking and biking, nature watching, shopping, dining, and more.

George Washington Memorial Parkway

Mariordo / CC BY-SA 3.0 / Creative Commons

Located primarily in Northern Virginia, the George Washington Memorial Parkway winds along a route that follows the picturesque Potomac River from Mount Vernon at the southern terminus northward to Great Falls, Virginia. Carefully planned and designed as a grand gateway to the nation’s capital, the road passes directly by Washington, D.C. This landscaped parkway connects a number of naturally and historically significant sites, including many of the country's most iconic monuments and memorials.

Just a few highlights to explore and enjoy along and near the George Washington Memorial Parkway include Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens , Historic Old Town Alexandria, The National Mall in Washington, D.C. , Arlington National Cemetery and Arlington House, and the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial . In addition, there are several scenic parks, walking and biking trails, and wildlife preserves. The entire length of the parkway is only 25 miles, but considering all of the places to stop along the way, you could easily spend a couple of days in the area, or more if your itinerary includes Washington, D.C.

Keep in mind that the George Washington Memorial Parkway is a major commuter route in and out of Washington, D.C. Weekday rush hour traffic is very heavy and should be avoided when planning your road trip itinerary. The worst of the rush hour usually lasts in the morning from about 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and in the afternoon from about 3 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Scenic Byway

Martin Falbisoner / CC BY-SA 3.0 / Creative Commons

Designated a National Scenic Byway in 2009, the Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Scenic Byway extends 180 miles through the states of Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania in a zone known as the Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area. The entire region is famous for its countless historic sites and the route is essential for anyone with a serious interest in American history. You'll pass through battlefields from the Revolutionary, French-Indian, 1812, and Civil wars; over 50 historic villages; important stops on the Underground Railroad; nine presidential homes; and more.

The route starts in Charleston, Virginia, at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and continues north to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania . To drive straight through takes about three and a half hours, not including time to stop at the numerous places along the way. Plan out which places you must see before embarking, because stopping at them all would take you weeks.

The Crooked Road Music Heritage Trail

Celebrating and preserving the heritage of authentic mountain music, The Crooked Road is Virginia's Music Heritage Trail. Meander along the winding roads through 10 counties in southwestern Virginia's Appalachian region while exploring the roots and traditions of old-time mountain music. Enjoy country music jams on the porches of local shops and restaurants, browse the workshops of luthiers and fiddle makers, and experience the unique culture and heritage of the region.

For a brief Crooked Road sampling, several sites are located near the Blue Ridge Parkway, making this a convenient and unique Blue Ridge Parkway side trip. Or, plan an in-depth experience to visit many sites along the approximately 300-mile trail during a weekend or longer driving tour. It winds through Southwest Virginia, starting in Franklin County and continuing along the southern border until wrapping back up toward Dickenson County.

Virginia Wine Trails

Home to six American Viticultural Areas (or AVAs) and over 200 wineries, Virginia's many wine trails offer an array of options for a memorable driving tour. Wine trails are located in every region of the Commonwealth, from the Eastern Shore to the western mountains, near charming towns, historic sites and attractions, and scenic vistas. You just have to choose which area stands out most to you.

Although wine trails may be explored all year long, the month of October— designated as Virginia Wine Month—is one of the best times of the year to plan a Virginia wine trails road trip. In celebration of Wine Month, there are many unique wine experiences, wine festivals, winery tours, and travel packages planned across the state throughout the entire month. The number of options is dizzying, so choose an area to focus on and then look into that zone's top wineries .

Virginia Civil War Trails

As home to the former capital of the Confederacy and the sites of the first and final major battles of the American Civil War, Virginia has a significant number of key Civil War sites . The Virginia Civil War Trails program consists of five interconnected campaign driving tours across the state, featuring hundreds of landmarks and significant places that are available to visit. Trail routes and stops are marked with interpretive markers and informational trailblazing signs.

The routes are organized by historical events rather than geography, so you can choose to follow the progression of the Peninsula Campaign or General Lee's Retreat, for example. Guides are available to download for free, so you can meticulously follow the route you choose and have all of the information you need at your fingertips.

Eastern Shore of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel

The Virginia portion of the Delmarva Peninsula stretches leisurely along Route 13 from Chincoteague in the northern section to Cape Charles at the southern end, near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Visit the famous wild horses of Chincoteague and Assateague , explore quaint coastal villages, enjoy fresh local seafood, and visit a few wineries.

If time permits, plan to include an overnight visit to Tangier Island for a uniquely Virginia experience. The famous 17.5-mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is well worth a drive across at the start or end of your Eastern Shore road trip.

James River Plantations

Walter Bibikow / Getty Images

Virginia State Route 5, which connects Richmond and Williamsburg, provides a glimpse of yesteryear as it winds along the scenic banks of the James River past several gracious and storied historic plantations, known collectively as the James River Plantations.

Having survived three wars, these preserved James River manor houses and plantations recall the sophisticated lifestyle of wealthy Virginia gentleman farmers. Each home is privately owned and sets its own operating hours and admission prices, so check individual webpages to confirm visiting information before you head out.

7 Day Virginia Road Trip Itinerary Overview

The below Virginia road trip could be longer than 7 days, but we maximized your time at each location, giving you a taste of everything Virginia has to offer.

However, there are so many amazing places to see in Virginia that you might want to spend a few days or more at each location.

  • Day One: Start at Arlington Cemetery then explore Alexandria in the afternoon and evening
  • Day Two: Drive to Shenandoah National Park and do one or two of the awesome hikes (like Dark Hollow Falls )
  • Day Three: Visit Luray in the morning and drive to Natural Bridge in the afternoon
  • Day Four: Visit Monticello in the morning and enjoy an evening in Charlottesville
  • Days Five: & Six: Drive to Williamsburg and spend the rest of the day at Busch Gardens. Spend the next day exploring Colonial Williamsburg .
  • Day Seven: Finish up with a short drive to Virginia Beach to relax by the ocean!

7 Day Road Trip Through Virginia Itinerary

Day one: arlington & alexandria.

virginia beach driving tour

In Arlington, the big draw is  Arlington Cemetery . While you can visit Arlington Cemetery on your own, we recommend taking the hop-on/hop-off tour .

The tour guides offer interesting facts and history about the property and the individuals interred there.

virginia beach driving tour

As one of the oldest towns in America, Alexandria is brimming with historical charm.

Take the King Street trolley (FREE!) down to the waterfront and enjoy the several shops and restaurants (we loved the Blackwall Hitch along the Potomac River).

Gadsby’s Tavern and other  historic sites  in Old Town are available for tours.

Top Hotel Pick

  • The Embassy Suites in Alexandria offers large rooms, free hot breakfast, and manager’s reception. Plus, it’s across the street from the Metro and the King Street Trolley, making it easy to Arlington Cemetery and around Alexandria.

Day Two: Shenandoah National Park

virginia beach driving tour

It’s about 2 hours to drive from Alexandria to the Thornton Gap entrance of Shenandoah National Park. This section has plenty of ways to spend a day in Shenandoah National Park , including some of the most popular hiking trails , like Dark Hollow Falls and Old Rag.

If you have some time at the end of the day, cruise along Skyline Drive (listen to this audio tour along the way) to take in the sunset at one of the many overlooks before heading to your hotel.

Keep in mind there is a fee to enter the park. However, if you have a National Park Pass or an  Every Kid in the Park Pass , you can enter with no charge.

  • The Days Inn in Luray isn’t fancy, but it’s in the perfect location to end day two and start day three!

Day Three: Luray Caverns & Natural Bridge State Park

virginia beach driving tour

There are several caves in Virginia to visit, but  Luray Caverns is the largest and most-popular. Get an early reservation to explore this massive cavern.

You should also have time to explore the other activities on site and grab a bite to eat before heading to your next stop.

If you want to spend more time in Luray , or just want a break from driving, you can skip the next spot and head right to your hotel in Charlottesville. But we wouldn’t recommend it!

virginia beach driving tour

Natural Bridge State Park is a popular trail features a gorgeous rock bridge over Cedar Creek. The 1.6-mile out-and-back paved trail is family-friendly and ends with an overlook of the Lace Falls.

Although the trail is short, there are 137 steps to climb down (and then back up) to see the natural bridge. If you’re worn out from hiking the day before, you might want to skip this spot!

There is a fee to visit Natural Bridge State Park. At time of publication it is $9 for everyone 13 and older and $6 for kids ages 3-12.

After your visit to Natural Bridge, drive the 1.25 hours to Charlottesville to check in for your next hotel. At least this stop will be for two nights !

  • When staying Charlottesville, the Home2Suites Charlottesville Downtown is a great option. It is walking distance to shops and restaurants, and offers free breakfast.

Day Four: Charlottesville

virginia beach driving tour

Your first stop in Charlottesville will be  Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello . It’ll take a few hours to explore the entire property. Thankfully, there is a delicious café on site to eat lunch.

After Monticello, take the time to explore Downtown Charlottesville. There several restaurants and shopping and also the Virginia Discovery Museum for kids if you have time! You can even do a ghost tour around Charlottesville if that’s your thing.

Days Five & Six: Williamsburg

virginia beach driving tour

We’re giving two days to this stop because there is so many things to do in Williamsburg !

We think you head straight to Busch Gardens for the day. This beautiful amusement park is known both for its atmosphere and rides. We personally loved riding Verbolten and then grabbing lunch or dinner Das Festhaus.

virginia beach driving tour

On day six, head to Colonial Williamsburg . This might be one of my favorite places in Virginia. The historic buildings and the interpreters dressed for the time period make you feel like you’ve transported back in time.

  • The Hampton Inn & Suites is a perfect stop for an overnight with complimentary breakfast.

Day Seven: Virginia Beach

It’s not a far drive from Williamsburg to Virginia Beach. And you’ve earned this day to relax on the sand and enjoy the view of the ocean.

Of course, you might also enjoy a stroll along the boardwalk or checking out all of the fun along Atlantic and Pacific Avenues. That’s up to you!

Do You Have More Time in Virginia? Add These Stops

Not far from Williamsburg or Virginia Beach, Norfolk offers plenty of things to do.

For more fun, drive into Norfolk and visit the  Hampton Roads Naval Museum  or the  Chrysler Museum of Art , both of which have FREE admission!

Richmond, the capital of Virginia, offers many fun things to do for families. The city is small enough to get around easily but big enough to fill your day with activity.

With several museums like the  American Civil War Museum , the  Virginia Museum of Fine Arts , and the  Children’s Museum of Richmond , you can beat the heat or rain and still get to learn about the city.

And for the nature lover, take a stroll along the trails on Belle Isle in the James River. You can get some great views of the city skyline on the northeastern side of the isle.

Virginia Road Trip: Map of Places to Visit in Virginia

How to Get Around Virginia

The best way to get around Virginia, especially for this 7 day road trip, is by car! All of the roads on this road trip itinerary are paved, but some can be very windy. Like any road trip, you want to  be prepared before you get on the road .

You’ll also want to plan for tolls by using  this website . EZ Pass is accepted at every toll booth in Virginia. If you don’t have EZ Pass, some tolls are bill-by-license plates, while others are exact change only.

The Best Time to Go on a Virginia Road Trip

Most of the stops on this 7 day road trip through Virginia are outside, so you’ll want to visit during nicer weather. Although Virginia winters aren’t always too harsh, Skyline Drive occasionally closes due to inclement weather.

Ideally, you’ll plan your trip sometime between late spring through early fall. That’ll give you the best weather to enjoy the trip. Keep in mind, summer will be very hot, in even the mountains, so plan accordingly with extra water and cooler clothing.

What to Pack for a Virginia Road Trip

Packing for a road trip through Virginia might be tricky, considering its multiple different geographic regions.

Some of the best places to visit in Virginia are the mountains and the beaches. As you plan your Virginia road trip, keep in mind what activities you’ll be participating in. Shenandoah National park has some great hikes. And you’ll definitely want your swimsuit for Virginia Beach.

If you plan to do everything on the itinerary, make sure to pack the following:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Hiking boots
  • Beach shoes
  • Bathing suit
  • Beach towels
  • Insect repellant
  • Water bottle

And like any good road trip, don’t forget the snacks!

Driving To The Virginia Beach Oceanfront

Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads driving can be a little confusing if you have never been here.  Hampton Roads is divided by the Chesapeake Bay into a nothern area called the Peninsula (Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg, etc..) and a southern area called the Southside (Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, etc…).

The many inlets and bays coming in from the Chesapeake Bay also causes problem in that it is difficult sometimes to get directly fron Point A to Point B becasue there is a body of water in your way.

Addin to the confusion is the fact that I-64 is labeled as a EAST-WEST interstate… but as is passes through Hampton Roads, the interstate is actually going NORTH-SOUTH.  It takes some getting used to.

Always checkout the traffic cameras

HAMPTON ROADS TRAFFIC CAMERAS

Here are some of the quickest and easiest ways to get to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.

WHAT’S RELATED?

  • Handicap Access
  • Parking Lots and Parking Garages
  • Trolleys, Buses and Cabs
  • Bicycle Laws and Information
  • The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel
  • Hospital, Medical and Emergency Information
  • Water Safety and Rip Currents
  • Rudee Inlet / Marina District

From The Chesapeake Bay Bridge / Tunnel

Coming south on Rt 13 over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge / Tunnel the easiest way to get to the oceanfront is by turning left (East) onto Shore Drive and then stay on Shore Drive until it reaches the oceanfront.

Getting-To-Virginia-Beach---CBBT-to-Oceanfront

From Norfolk International Airport (ORF)

From the Norfolk International Airport you rally have 2 different options.

OPTION #1) Interstate Get onto I-64 East and then a few miles down the interstate stay inthe right lane and merge onto I-264 East.  You should see signs for the Virginia beach Oceanfront.  This is all interstate highway driving so you won’t get to see very many scenic things, but it should be the quickest route (assuming no traffic)

OPTION #2) Interstate to Shore Dr Get onto I-64 East and stay in the right lane and take the exit for Rt 13 North (Northampton Blvd).  This will take you up towards the Chesapeake Bay and and you can then take the exit for Shore Dr (the last exit before you reach the tolls booths for the Chesapeake Bay Bride Tunnel CBBT).  This is a much more scenic route that will take you through Seashore State Park and the North End of Virginia Beach.

Getting-To-Virginia-ORF-to-Oceanfront

From the North (through the Hampton Roads Bridge / Tunnel) HRBT

If you are coming from the North down I-64 East (ex: from Richmond), you more than likely must pass through either the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT). The tunnels coming to and from Virginia Beach are very unique and interesting, but they can cause huge traffic delays.  Maintain your speed and keeps your eyes on the road. You will have to pass through the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (HRBT) which connects the Peninsula area (Hampton and Newport News) to the Southside (Virginia Beach and Norfolk).

You really have 2 different  main options once you get through the Hampton Roads bridge tunnel (HRBT).

OPTION #1) Interstate Stay on I-64 East and stay in the right lane and merge onto I-264 East.  You should see signs for the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.  This is all interstate highway driving so you won’t get to see very many scenic things, but it should be the quickest route (assuming no traffic)

OPTION #2) Interstate to Shore Dr Stay on I-64 East and stay in the right lane and take the exit for Rt 13 North (Northampton Blvd).  This will take you up towards the Chesapeake Bay and and you can then take the exit for Shore Dr (the last exit before you reach the tolls booths for the Chesapeake Bay Bride Tunnel CBBT).  This is a much more scenic route that will take you through Seashore State Park and the North End of Virginia Beach.

virginia beach driving tour

From the South on I-64 West

If you are coming from the South, most likely you will be on I-64 West.  The easiest way to get to the Oceanfront is to stay in the right lane and merge onto I-264 East.  This is all interstate driving and will get you there the fastest.  There really are no other easy routes from the south.

Other driving information:

  • Drive on the right side of the highway.
  • Seatbelts are required for all vehicle occupants.
  • Right turn on red after stopping is permitted in Virginia unless otherwise indicated.
  • Children under age 4 or under 40 pounds must be secured in a child restraint or booster seat.
  • State Police monitor the highways entering Virginia Beach and local Virginia Beach Police monitor the local streets.  They have seen every sort of vacationer imaginable and although they can be reasonable, they mean business if you are breaking the law!

Virginia & Washington DC Road Trip: Awesome History, Famous Sights

Virginia & Washington DC Road Trip: Awesome History, Famous Sights

There’s nothing like a Washington DC and Virginia road trip. We often talk to our kids about how important history is, even when it’s been whitewashed and edited, and as such we visit a lot of historic sites on our travels. Washington DC and Virginia hold an incredible number of important sites and stories, so this road trip route will take you through a good portion of the Revolutionary War and growth of our nation.

Fun, historic Washington DC and Virginia road trip plan. From the best things to do near DC to Virginia Beach and Williamsburg, this great road trip includes Revolutionary War history and beautiful nature.

Jump to our Washington DC and Historic Virginia road trip itinerary

I love this road trip route for many reasons, and one of them is that I remember doing it as a kid. I’ve since gotten to relive this road trip with my own children. There’s something about being able to see the places you’ve learned about in school, or to be able to explain to kids that “This is where…”

For my family, this was really fun, and a first-timer trip to the National Capital region . This was also the first time either of our kids genuinely were interested in history. They even wanted period costumes… but you’ll have to decide if that’s right for you.

Check out our Road Trip Planning Tool to set up your itinerary AND BUDGET

Washington DC Through Virginia Route

Washington DC is located between the states of Maryland and Virginia. It’s easiest to start the road trip to Virginia Beach in DC because there are three airport options, all with lots of direct flights from nearly anywhere in the USA or Canada.

You can fly into Washington Dulles (DUL), Washington Reagan (DCA) or Baltimore Washington International (BWI) airports. All have all major car rental brands and are easy launch pointed for a Virginia and Washington DC road trip.

Whether you want to start in DC and head south or go from Virginia Beach to Washington DC, the route along I-95 is the fastest for your big travel day. For the fun part of the drive with all the interesting stops and activities, you’ll be on Virginia state highways for most of it.

Washington DC from Airplane Window Landing at Reagan Airport 1

How long does it take to get from Washington DC to Virginia’s Historic Triangle?

Virginia’s Historic Triangle is the biggest draw of SE Virginia. We love it! This area include Jamestown, Yorktown and Colonial Williamsburg . It’s about four hours drive or less from Washington DC to Williamsburg, and you’ll find lots of easy stops along the way to break it up if you like.

Once in the Williamsburg area, you can stay in town or continue down toward Newport News or Virginia Beach. There are countless things to do in the area, so if you can plan an extra day to explore on your own, do it!

Something to consider when planning how long of a drive you’ll have is traffic. DC traffic can be epic. Leave the Washington DC area to head south before 3:00 pm if you want an okay drive. Once the traffic begins, you’ll be adding potentially more than an hour to the drive.

Fall Colors on Old Dominion Great Falls Park Fairfax Virginia 1

How long does it take to drive from Washington DC to Virginia Beach?

If you’d like to drive from Washington DC to Virginia Beach, it’s a solid four hours. If you map it you may see a drive time of 3.5 hours, but that’s not realistic. Between needing to make stops for the bathroom, food, and random points of interest it’s going to take at least four hours.

Where should I go on a road trip in Virginia?

This is the part I love when writing about road trips. I love finding all the best things to do, especially in historic places like Virginia and Washington DC. Pick and choose from the following, but remember that the best way to get a sense of place is to not just see the top sights, but to meet the people. Enjoy small restaurants and pop into the shops you see. You’ll be glad you did.

You’ll see there are a ton of both Revolutionary and Civil War historic sites. These are very good stops to make on a Virginia road trip, as they provide tons of information about the area and how it fits into the overall history of the United States.

Taylor Family at Military Cemetery Colonial National Park Historic Triangle Yorktown Virginia 3

Another type of stop you may find along the Washington DC to Virginia Beach route is historic or Antebellum home sites. I would approach these historic road trip stops with caution. Although the way history is presented is becoming more accurate and less whitewashed, plantation houses still tend to paint slavery or the Civil War as less evil than it actually was. You find this a lot if you do a North Georgia small towns trip and visit privately owned homes, but Civil War battlefields and National Park sites give a pretty accurate depiction of the history of the USA.

What is there to do in Washington DC near Virginia?

Washington DC is directly across the Potomac River from Virginia. You’ll find that you can actually walk into DC from Arlington, Virginia, or you can take the Metro trains from nearly anywhere else around Northern VA. From the Tidal Basin, which is the PRIME place to see cherry blossoms in Washington DC , to the west end of the National Mall, it’s easy to access some of the best of DC from Virginia.

If you’re staying in Fairfax or Vienna for your time visiting Washington DC, you’ll have lots of Metro stops to choose from depending on what things you choose to do each day. There are some wonderful hotels in Washington DC , but stay where is right for your budget.

THERE IS NO NEED TO DRIVE INTO WASHINGTON DC. There, I just saved you hours each day. Wherever you stay, you really don’t need a car in Washington DC. If you’re ending your Virginia/DC road trip here, you can even take boat down to Mount Vernon for a day trip. No car needed.

Washington DC & Historic Virginia Road Trip Itinerary

Alright, here we go. This road trip plan goes from Washington DC to Virginia Beach and then you make all the fun stops for things to do as you drive north. If you happen to be driving up to Virginia from the South, just start at Day 2 and work your way up, and visa versa if you’re driving down from New York or Pennsylvania or something.

This and many more road trip itineraries can be found in my book, The Road Trip Survival Guide . Get your copy HERE!

Start :  Fly into either Washington Regan (DCA), Washington Dulles (IAD) or Baltimore Washington International (BWI), as this is where your loop road trip will end. If you would like to do a straight shot, fly into Newport News (PHF) and then out of a Washington DC area airport.  Depending on your origin, Baltimore (BWI) may also be an option instead of DCA or IAD, as there seem to be more direct flights to BWI from Washington and Oregon for some reason.

Next, visit Bacon’s Castle, the oldest brick home in North America, before you drive onto the very small (free) ferry from Scotland to Jamestown.

Tip: if you have built extra days into your itinerary, enjoy some time in Norfolk, Virginia before heading to Jamestown and Williamsburg. There are lots of things to do in Norfolk !

Plan a visit to Stratford Hall if you need another living history experience or if you just want to wander the grounds of this amazing estate.

After some lunch in Montrose, visit George Washington’s Birthplace National Historic Site. Leaving this rural part of Virginia, make your way to Mount Vernon, George Washington’s home, for one last historic tour.

Day 5:   Raging Waterfalls and the Space Shuttle

Find breakfast in town before you head west to Manassas . Even though this Virginia / Washington DC road trip focuses on the Revolutionary War, the first major battle of the Civil War happened at Manassas, and it’s worth visiting for a different look into history.

By lunchtime, head north to Great Falls Park, where you’ll walk along the raging, epic rapids of the Potomac River. This is really gorgeous in the fall, a wonderful place to see some of the best fall colors in a National Park.

Your next stop is the Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate. Here you’ll get to see all kinds of aircraft and even a Space Shuttle! Head to downtown Alexandria to wander around Old Town and the waterfront, eventually getting dinner in the historic quarter.

Sleep in: Fairfax or Alexandria

Taylor Family at Great Falls National Park Fairfax Virginia 1

Day 6/7:   Explore Washington DC Sites and Museums

The next day or two is spent exploring Washington DC , the nation’s capital. You no longer need a car as you can take the Metro wherever you need to go, including back to the airport (DCA, IAD, BWI). Visit the greatest museums in the USA as you spend time in the many Smithsonians.  Top choices:

  • Museum of Natural History
  • Museum of American History
  • Museum of African-America History and Culture
  • Museum of the American Indian
  • American Art Museum

This is a lot of museums, so pace yourself and know that you don’t have to do or see them all.

In addition to the museums, there are also fascinating sites and tours to do including Ford’s Theater, the National Capitol and the Washington Monument. Visit the United States Botanic Garden, walk the National Mall, and make your way to the Tidal Basin for the Jefferson Memorial. To do it all, you need three or four days, but two days is also plenty if you choose what’s most important to you.

Sleep in:   either continue where you’ve been staying or switch to a hotel IN Washington DC.

Depart:  take the train to your departure airport. If you are continuing to explore the National Capital Region, it is easy to head north into Maryland or New Jersey, and Philadelphia is also rather close and an easy edition to your road trip.

We hope you have a great trip and discover some new aspects of US history you didn’t know about before. Drive safely and check back often for fresh road trip plans!

Fun, historic Washington DC and Virginia road trip plan. From the best things to do near DC to Virginia Beach and Williamsburg, this great road trip includes Revolutionary War history and beautiful nature.

Music and concerts, music and concerts | willie nelson, bob dylan and more coming to virginia beach for june music festival.

Willie Nelson performs in Nashville, Tenn. Nelson may have given up smoking, but he hasn't stopped using marijuana.

A slate of rock n’ roll and country music titans are coming in June to Virginia Beach as part of the 2024 Outlaw Music Festival Tour.

Willie Nelson and Family, Bob Dylan, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss and Celisse will headline the festival at the Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater on June 26, according to an announcement by Blackbird Presents on Tuesday. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 1 for the general public, though Citi card members can purchase presale tickets from Tuesday until 10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 29.

The Outlaw Music Festival is scheduled for 25 stops across the country from June to September, with some dates including additional headliners like John Mellencamp with Brittney Spencer, Southern Avenue and Billy Strings.

“This year’s Outlaw Music Festival Tour promises to be the biggest and best yet with this lineup of legendary artists,” Nelson said in a news release. “I am thrilled to get back on the road again with my family and friends playing the music we love for the fans we love.”

The festival began in 2016 in Scranton, Pennsylvania and has become one of the largest touring acts in North America. Some other big names that have taken the Outlaw stage are Neil Young, Sheryl Crow, Chris Stapleton, ZZ Top, Van Morrison, Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson, Bonnie Raitt and Eric Church.

Nelson last performed in Virginia Beach as part of the 2022 iteration of the festival, Plant & Krauss performed together in Portsmouth in 2023, while Dylan has played in Hampton Roads at least nine times, according to The Pilot’s reporting, with the last appearance in 2013.
