'Grey Ghost' USS Orleck naval museum reopening in permanent home in downtown Jacksonville

navy ship tours florida

Jacksonville's resident warship is once again ready for visitors.

The  U.S.S. Orleck , which earned the nickname "The Grey Ghost of the Vietnam Coast" by firing more rounds in support of ground troops than any ship in the Navy, will officially open for visitors on Friday in its permanent berth in the St. Johns River, just off Bay Street across from the Duval County Jail. A "soft opening" is planned for Wednesday and Thursday.

The Orleck, a Gearing Class destroyer that was built in Texas and launched in May of 1945, arrived in Jacksonville more than a year ago but spent most of that time in a temporary berth in front of the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront. It moved downriver in April to its long-term home, alongside city-owned Pier One.

A temporary building that houses air-conditioned restrooms and a ticket office now stands behind the historic Catherine Street Fire Station building that was moved in March from Metropolitan Park. The city has plans to build a park that will incorporate the Orleck and a new visitor's center, the fire station and a relocated Museum of Science and History .

Downtown fun: Jacksonville Jazz Festival returns Memorial Day weekend. Here's who's playing.

The ship sits alongside a large concrete pier, but the pier is not publicly accessible. A wooden ramp now winds its way from the ground to an aluminum gangway leading to the stern of the ship, where visitors are confronted by a pair of the ship's big guns that once took 14 men to operate. The ramp is wheelchair-accessible, but parts of the ship are not.

The ship is the centerpiece of the new Jacksonville Naval Museum . It will be open for public tours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. For the opening weekend — which combines Memorial Day with huge crowds that will be downtown for the Jacksonville Jazz Festival — the Orleck will be open Monday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"It’s Memorial Day, so it’s a huge military holiday," said Jim Webb, executive director of the Jacksonville Naval Museum.

Plans call for a live band on board, plus food trucks parked near the new ticket office.

Webb said tens of thousands of people have toured the ship since it arrived in Jacksonville, but exact numbers aren't available because the museum couldn't charge admission. While berthed near the Hyatt, the ship sat over state-owned land, which meant the museum could only accept donations. The new site is city-owned, so tickets will now be sold.

"I've learned all about submerged land leases," Webb said.

Admission to the Orleck is $15 for adults, $13 for veterans and seniors, $10 for ages 10-17 and $5 for ages 6-11. Active duty military in uniform are admitted free; admission for active duty military out of uniform is $7.50.

The ship is being transformed into a museum of the U.S. Navy's role in the Cold War, and Vietnam in particular. Webb said the Orleck was once armed with tactical nuclear depth charges that would have blown a mile-wide hole in the water but were never deployed. A tiny drone anti-submarine helicopter sits on a deck near the ship's stern, but Webb said plans call for it to be moved to an interior hangar that, at some point, was converted to a mess hall.

Most of the compartments on the main deck — "officers' country" — are accessible to the public while work continues on others. The ship's store, which once sold cigarettes and essentials to the crew, is now a gift shop selling memorabilia and T-shirts. Visitors can also visit the ship's mess, pharmacy and bridge.

Crews are working on the enlisted berthing areas, where the crew once slept. The spaces have low ceilings and bunks that hang by chains. They will eventually be used for overnight trips by Scouts and other youth groups.

The Orleck has already hosted at least three weddings and a marriage-vow renewal ceremony, plus a steady stream of military retirement ceremonies and Chamber of Commerce mixers. "We’ve probably had private events every day since moving here in April," Webb said.

The 2,350-ton  Gearing Class  destroyer was launched in May 1945 and operated as part of the Seventh Fleet during the  Korean War , then underwent extensive renovations under the Navy's Fleet Rehabilitation and Maintenance program in 1962.

The ship earned 18 Battle Stars, four during the Korean conflict and 14 during the fighting in Vietnam.

It later served as a training ship and appeared in the TV miniseries "Winds of War." In 1982 it was transferred to the Turkish Navy, where it was renamed the  TCG Yücetepe , serving until 2000. The Turkish Navy donated the ship to the Southeast Texas War Memorial and Heritage Foundation and it was kept on the Calcasieu River in Lake Charles, La., where it was damaged by Hurricane Laura in 2020. The Jacksonville group acquired the ship in 2021 and had it towed to a drydock in Port Arthur, Texas, where it was inspected before being towed across the Gulf of Mexico, around the tip of Florida and into the St. Johns River.

A peek inside what will be Jacksonville’s floating Naval Museum: The USS Orleck

Volunteers still needed to clean, move equipment to get ship ready for opening day.

Aaron Farrar , News4Jax reporter

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The centerpiece of Jacksonville’s new naval museum is on track to open in July.

The USS Orleck has been docked on the Northbank since the end of March, and visitors will soon have a chance to experience what life was like on board.

The museum hasn’t set a date for when the Orleck will welcome its first tours, and it still needs volunteers to help get things ready.

Volunteers are asked to help clean and move equipment between Wednesdays and Sundays leading up to opening day.

Information about how to volunteer and donate can be found at jaxnavalmuseum.org .

Justin Weakland, the vice president of the Jacksonville Historic Naval Ships Association, gave News4JAX a tour of the soon-to-be naval museum.

“We want people to actually understand what may be some of their uncles, fathers, and grandparents actually dealt with while they were underway in the Navy,” Weakland said.

Visitors would get views of the ship’s administrative office, the galley where meals were cooked for 300 people at a time, and the mess decks where sailors ate.

There are also views of the plotter room where tourists could get a glimpse at the firing stations for the guns.

“This ship itself fired more than 11,000 rounds supporting our soldiers on the ground,” Weakland said. “Air Force, Marines and Army forces were on the ground in Vietnam.”

The work is still underway to get this ship to reflect the Vietnam War era.

“When they were firing at Vietnam, there would be people in here that set all of the ranges and settings,” Weakland said while showing a computer used for navigation and combat. “They would plot it and fire.”

The tour will also include a stop at the Pilot House where sailors steered the USS Orleck.

There are also a few pieces of the ship featured in the movie “Greyhound,” which starred Tom Hanks and was released in 2020.

The ship is currently on the Northbank, and it will eventually move to its permanent home at the Shipyards. However, there is still no timetable for when that move will happen.

Pensacola welcomes Spanish tall ship the Elcano for week of free public tours

The Spanish Navy training tall ship  Juan Sebastian de Elcano is returning to Pensacola and will be open for a week of public tours.

The ship will dock at the Port of Pensacola at Commendencia Street Slip from May 29 to June 3. This visit will coincide with Fiesta Pensacola festivities and will include free public ship tours .

The world-famous Elcano has been visiting Pensacola since 1959 to celebrate our city’s rich Spanish history.

Commanded by Capt. Manuel García Ruiz, the Elcano is a four-masted top sail schooner and is one of the oldest tall ships sailing today. Built in 1927, theElcano was named after the Spanish explorer who completed Ferdinand Magellan’s first-ever circumnavigation of the earth from 1519 to 1522.

Previous visit: Spanish tall ship Juan Sebastian de Elcano to make Pensacola return in spring

Related: Elcano tall ship sails into Pensacola: What to know before you go

At 370 feet long, Elcano is the third-largest tall ship in the world. The hull is made of iron, and there are four masts called Blanca, Almansa, Asturias and Nautilus — named after other Navy training ships that preceded the Elcano. To date the Elcano has completed nearly 100 training cruises, including 10 full circumnavigations of the globe.

As a training ship, the Elcano’s main mission is to cultivate seamanship among the future officers of the Spanish Navy. Along with providing hands-on education and nautical training, Elcano’s visits to foreign ports contributes to Spain’s foreign policy and develops future officers' leadership qualities both at sea and on land.

The visit was coordinated in cooperation with the Pensacola Navy League, which said the goal of the visit "is for the crew to engage with and learn more about our city, as we learn more about our city’s Spanish influence.”

The entrance for the public tours is located at the southern end of Commendencia Street on the western side of the Port of Pensacola. Visitors must be able to climb stairs, and strollers will not be permitted on the ship. There are no public restrooms aboard the Elcano.

Here is the full schedule for the Elcano's upcoming visit:  Monday, May 29

WFLA Tampa

US Naval warship tours begin this week in Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A top-of-the-line warship arrived at the Port of Tampa Bay Monday morning.

Later in the week, it will be activated into the Navy Service through an event called a commissioning ceremony.

The community will have plenty of opportunities to see the USS Jack H. Lucas DDG 125 Warship ahead of Saturday’s 10 a.m. ceremony.

Port officials said they are honored for our area to be chosen.

“This destroyer will be the next generation of our nation’s really tip-of-the-spear vessel warship that will sail in harm’s way around the world but to promote peace for our nation,” Port Tampa Bay President and CEO Paul Anderson said.

Anderson compared preparations for the ship’s arrival to preparations for the Super Bowl.

It’s all hands on deck this week as thousands of people are expected to attend festivities.

“We commission Coast Guard cutters here; we support those commissioning, but the undertaking of a navy vessel is significantly larger,” Anderson said.

He also said a ship like this is typically named after a president, but this one is named after a marine legend.

It’s called “indestructible” because that’s what Jack H. Lucas was.

At 17 years old, he became the youngest Medal of Honor recipient in the history of the United States Marine Corps for his service and bravery at the Battle of Iwo Jima.

“One of the worst battles of WWII in terms of loss of life for the United States and the Marine Corps,” Anderson said. “He jumped on two grenades to save his colleagues and he lived.”

Although medically retired, Lucas wanted to jump out of an airplane so he joined airborne. His parachute failed and he survived.

Another time, his wife tried hiring a hitman to kill him so she could take his benefits. He escaped death in that situation too.

Port officials said they look forward to sharing more about who Lucas was throughout this week.

Starting Tuesday, you can get a tour of the ship every day from 12:30 – 4:30 leading up to Saturday’s commissioning. Tours are given on a first-come, first-serve basis.

You can also register here for free tickets to the commissioning.

For the latest news, weather, sports, and streaming video, head to WFLA.

Jacksonville Naval Museum sends USS Orleck Museum Ship to Drydock

Dec 16, 2021

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 16 December 2021

Jacksonville, Florida – The city of Jacksonville and local Navy and military Veterans have something to be thankful for this holiday season! The Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association (JHNSA), parent owner of the future Jacksonville Naval Museum, has started the towing of the USS Orleck Naval Museum to drydock! The JHNSA took advantage of an opening in the drydock schedule. This is a critical step in the process of verifying the ship is able to continue to serve as a museum ship and is within the financial means of the JHNSA. This will also help satisfy the development agreement requirement of having evidence the ship is sound to serve as a museum ship in Jacksonville.

The USS Orleck departed Lake Charles, Louisiana on Wednesday, December 15th. The Orleck will arrive at Port Arthur, Texas on Thursday, December 16th. Smith Maritime Incorporated, of Green Cove Springs, is the company providing the tow. The cost of this first tow is $105,000. While in Port Arthur, the ship will be put into drydock at the Gulf Copper and Manufacturing Corporation for inspection, hull strengthening, and preservation. The drydocking is expected to take place on Friday, December 17th. The preservation will be cleaning of the hull and painting of the exterior of the ship from top to bottom. This work is expected to take 30 days, with the dry dock working days taking place Monday through Saturday and closed for holidays. This will position the Orleck’s tow for Jacksonville in mid-January with an arrival in late-January. The tow to Jacksonville is expected to take approximately 10 to 12 days.

The costs to JHNSA to bring the Orleck to Jacksonville has gone up considerably since the last estimate done in March of 2020. With $250,000 of new repairs needed from last year’s Hurricane Laura, cost increases for materials, fuel and labor – the project costs in the shipyard now stands at an estimated $1.8 million plus $65,000 for paint. This is up from previous estimates of $1.3 million for the shipyards and $56,000 for paint from 18 months ago. The JHNSA is grateful to have recently just received $100,000 donation in October from an out of state Navy Veteran who supports strongly JHNSA’s mission to create a naval museum and help save the historic USS Orleck. Since January of 2020, JHNSA has spent approximately $164,000 on the Orleck for inspections, ship insurance, towing down payment, and other needs.

In dry docking the Orleck will receive an inspection of the hull to ensure it is capable of continued to service as a museum ship. It is expected the JHNSA will know the status of the inspection by Tuesday, 21 December. Should the hull be found beyond the JHNSA financial means for restoration, the decision will then be made by the Orleck Association with concurrence of the JHNSA to salvage the ship for scrap.

In Jacksonville, the ship will be moored stern in, starboard side to the 600’ long “Pier 1”. This is adjacent to the Berkman Marina along East Bay Street in the old Shipyards area of the Sports and Entertainment District in

downtown, Jacksonville. The arrival date in Jacksonville has not been set and will be notified by future press releases. Once moored the JHNSA will continue to prepare the museum ship for opening as the Jacksonville Naval Museum. The “pier-side” preparation work is expected to be two to four weeks in length but may be extended as needed. Prior to the ship’s arrival, work will be done to prepare the pier. A separate modular building with ticketing, gift shop, and restrooms will be put on hold by request of the Downtown Investment Authority (DIA). The DIA has asked JHNSA to wait until plans are worked out for the Shipyards area.

The Jacksonville Naval Museum will feature the “US Navy Cold War Experience”, which is represented by the ex-USS Orleck. The Orleck, a WWII era Gearing Class destroyer, was heavily modified under the Fleet Rehabilitation and Maintenance (FRAM II) program in the early 1960’s. The Orleck embodies the Korean War, Vietnam War, and Cold War periods in US Navy history having served in all three. The steam powered, twin propeller, 4 boiler Orleck is much smaller than today’s modern-day gas turbine powered destroyers with a length of only 390 feet, 41’ wide beam, an “air draft” of 109’ at the top mast with a current empty displacement of approximately 2,350 tons.

Having such a long and prolific service history the Orleck is the most decorated post-World War II ship ever built and was awarded 18 battle stars. After the Orleck’s US Naval service, she was transferred to the Turkish Navy and renamed the Yüctepe (D 345). She continued to serve until being transferred back to the United States in August of 2000 to become a museum ship.

The Jacksonville Naval Museum will honor past generations of Veterans and inspire future Patriots through STEM plus history education opportunities. The museum will serve as a gathering place for Naval Associations, crew reunions, and military conventions while supporting Veterans as a local resource and networking center. Future initiatives may include a Tall Ships Festival or Navy Fleet Week; increasing tourism to downtown Jacksonville.

Bringing the ship to downtown and creating the Jacksonville Naval Museum is a monumental undertaking, but we feel with the support of our local community – this long-standing dream will be turned into reality! We ask our local community to support us in any way possible: share the news of the museum coming, visit the museum once we are open, volunteer with us for the variety of positions that will be available, and donate to this worthy cause if possible. We named it the ‘Jacksonville’ Naval Museum because it really is about our community coming together to celebrate our rich military history, inspire patriotism, and honor our veterans and active-duty service members.

We look forward to bringing this “Bold Ship to the Bold City” that once was home to many Cold War era workhorses like the Oliver Hazard Perry Frigates, P-3 Orions, and MH-60 Seahawks. We are excited for the community to enjoy stepping back to the time of the Cold War onboard this piece of living history! With Jacksonville’s large Naval community, we feel the Orleck is a fitting tribute and terrific match to call Jacksonville home!
