Taylor Swift Reflects on Family Ties to Singapore During Eras Tour Stop: 'It Means the World'
"My mom actually spent a lot of her childhood with her mom and dad and sister growing up in Singapore," the singer said

Taylor Swift is reflecting on family ties surrounding her latest Eras Tour stop.
During her first of six shows at the National Stadium in Singapore on Saturday, the pop superstar, 34, detailed why Singapore holds a special place in her heart.
"My mom actually spent a lot of her childhood with her mom and dad and sister growing up in Singapore," Taylor said in a fan-shot video posted on X (formerly Twitter) about her mother, Andrea Swift .
"So a lot of the time when we'd come here on tour, my mom would take me and drive me past her old house, where she used to go to school. So I've been hearing about Singapore my whole life," the musician added.

Continuing to rave to fans in Singapore even further about being able to play for them in the place where her mother once lived, Taylor said, "To get to come here and play a show this big with so many beautiful, generous people who are essentially honoring my family with what you just did with that song, it means the world."
"I already love you," the "Blank Space" singer added. "We're going to have a blast tonight."
Taylor previously opened up about her mom's early years during a 2016 interview with The Straits Times . At the time, she noted that her mom had to travel for Taylor's grandfather's job and it was "really nostalgic" for her mom when she got to revisit her childhood memories.
Both Andrea and Scott Swift — Taylor's dad — have been major supporters of their daughter's career over the years, especially during the Eras Tour.
During a Philadelphia stop on Mother's Day in May 2023, the musician paid tribute to her mom by performing her 2008 fan-favorite "The Best Day."
"I wrote this song just compiling these sort of core childhood memories I had of not just her as a mother, but her as a friend," Swift said, per a fan-shot video at the time.
"It's such a beautiful song. Where did you find it? It sounds exactly like the things we went through," she recalled of Andrea saying the first time she heard it, before she replied: "I was like, 'Mom, I wrote it and recorded it secretly, it is our memories. It was the sweetest thing ever because I just think she couldn't have comprehended that I would write a song about the two of us."
Swift's next five performances at the National Stadium in Singapore take place from Sunday into next weekend, closing out on March 9.

Column: Alijah Arenas and Chatsworth continue their redemption tour
- Show more sharing options
- Copy Link URL Copied!
Not since the days of Chino Hills and the Ball brothers packing public school gyms on the way to an unbeaten season in 2016 has there been a reason to offer a heartfelt thank you to one family for making such a profound impact in high school basketball with their decision to stay local.
Let’s salute the mother and father of sophomore guard Alijah Arenas of Chatsworth. No one believed he’d stay one year, let alone two seasons, at Chatsworth High. His dad is Gilbert Arenas of NBA fame, and like LaVar Ball, he doesn’t care what people say. He wanted his son to learn how to lead, how to deal with double teams, how to get up off the court when adversity strikes.
At 6 feet 6 and growing, Arenas has done that and much more to help his team move to within one victory of earning a trip to the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento to play for the Division IV state championship. It’s extraordinary, considering Chatsworth went 9-21 last season and Arenas didn’t leave for some program filled with all-stars. He doubled down on helping lift a bunch of neighborhood kids, culminating with a 53-point performance on Saturday night in the Southern California Regional semifinals against Washington Prep.
The fact he’s a normal teenager who smiles, is polite and greets strangers and friends alike with respect only adds to the intrigue. While reporters are running around trying to figure out what Bronny James plans to do at USC and beyond, this son of basketball royalty is keeping it real. His talent level is exceptional. Is he can’t-miss? Maybe. He’s not there yet but if the CIF wants some real entertainment in Sacramento, they will root for Chatsworth to win on Tuesday at home against West Valley League rival Cleveland. He’s averaging more than 32 points a game.
The fact he scored 53 points while missing nine free throws offers a hint at what he’s capable of doing. He had one missed dunk that would have broken the internet if he had made it. Fans were ready to leap into the bleacher aisles as he elevated above a group of Washington Prep players. If you had closed your eyes and just listened to the crowd with every Arenas move, it was almost a throwback to the 11:30 p.m. championship games at the Sports Arena in the 1980s when Manual Arts was playing Crenshaw and fans were loudly arguing who was better.
Arenas really could be playing for any number of private schools that sell their programs as a way to get exposure or build up future NIL networks. Dad apologizes to no one for the choice to stick it out at Chatsworth.
“You have to learn how to lose,” he said. “You have to feel the pain to get better.”
It was two weeks ago when Arenas looked despondent shaking hands with the winning team in the City Section Open Division semifinals. The Chancellors had a three-point lead in the final seconds, missed two free throws, threw the ball away out of bounds and gave up consecutive threes in less than three seconds to lose to LACES. Arenas had zero points in the fourth quarter.
Arenas could have said, “Enough. Get me out of here.”
Instead, he went back into his laboratory to figure out what went wrong.
“I had to take time to think what really happened and go over the game in my head,” he said. “I had to get back in the gym. I took that game personally.”
Now the Chancellors and Cleveland are on a redemption tour, as the state playoffs sometimes offer. Cleveland was seeded No. 1 in the Open Division playoffs but lost in the first round. Then the Cavaliers lost their best player. They have regrouped and get to face Chatsworth for a third time this season. Each has won once.
Arenas’ sister, Izela, is also seeking a trip to Sacramento. She’s a star guard for Sierra Canyon, which plays at Etiwanda in the Open Division girls’ regional final.
Who knows what the future holds, but it’s clear Arenas is learning lessons that will help him on his basketball journey.
“We had to lock in,” he said. “We had to take practice more seriously. We had to be a team more seriously. We had to move forward.”

Daycation Destination: Fly high with a helicopter tour above Pittsburgh
Burrell High School junior Billy Kowalkowski had a sky-high experience for his 17th birthday.
He took a private helicopter tour of Pittsburgh last month with veteran pilot Ron Spiker of Zelienople and his mom, Danielle Kowalkowski.
Danielle Kowalkowski booked a mother-son sunset tour in February with Spiker Helicopters, which has been in business since 2003.
“He knows I’m afraid of heights and small spaces,” Danielle said of her son.
The duo’s initially scheduled flight was canceled because of bad weather.
A few days later, when weather conditions were favorable, wearing in-flight headphones to communicate, they took off from Zeilienople on a one-hour tour.
From Pitt’s Cathedral of Learning to Acrisure Stadium to the three rivers, the tour offered a bird’s eye view of Mt. Washington, Downtown Pittsburgh and more — all from an altitude of about 900 to 1,000 feet.
“I wanted to create a memorable experience for me and my son. There’s always something to stop and say, ‘I’m too busy,’ but to me sharing experiences is the most important thing in life,” Danielle Kowalkowski said.
Billy plans to earn his pilot’s license.
“I want to be a pilot because I love to meet new people, and I want to travel the world,” he said. “And the overall benefits that the job as a pilot offers are amazing.”
The sunset tour appealed to Billy.
“Everything about that ride was special because it was so beautiful at all times. The sunset truly made that ride and the photos as amazing as it could’ve been,” Billy said.
Spiker, 60, originally opened Spiker Helicopters offering flight instruction.
“But people started asking for tours,” said Spiker, an Army veteran.
Spiker earned his pilot’s license in Oklahoma in 1981. He is a certified FAA air tour operator, based out of the Zelienople Municipal Airport.
Spiker personalizes each tour and said in-flight engagements are popular.
“I’m up to about 34 proposal tours so far. Sometimes they’re elaborate with signs on the ground,” Spiker said. “So far it’s 100% yeses. That’s good.”
Customers have to leave the champagne for post-flight celebrations — only water is allowed on board in flight.
Spiker has one helicopter, a Robinson R44, that cost $400,000.
The tour highlight last year was an actual in-flight wedding.
“They wanted something different,” Spiker said of the helicopter hitch. “That was pretty cool.”
Wildlife sightings are possible during each flight, and Spiker is still waiting to spot a black bear.
“Bald eagles are always a high, and we have seen them in the Lake Arthur and Moraine State Park area,” Spiker said.
Flight prices start at $440 for a 40-minute flight, with $50 for each additional person, for a total of three people per flight.
The Bridges Tour is 50 minutes, highlights 19 bridges closest to the Point and Downtown Pittsburgh and is $480 plus $50 per person.
The weight limit is 285 pounds per passenger and a total of 540 pounds combined.
Per FAA regulations, Spiker must fly a route within 25 miles of the pickup site.
Spiker retired from the IT industry and is pursuing his retirement passion, adding there isn’t a lot of competition in the helicopter tour market in Pittsburgh.
“They tried it but it’s not much of demand for it,” Spiker said of helicopter tour businesses that have come and gone. “It’s not a big tourist attraction here. This isn’t Myrtle Beach where there are nine helicopters in the sky.”
Tour packages include a standard Pittsburgh Tour, Deluxe Pittsburgh Tour, Proposal Tour, Stadium Tour, Sunset Tour, Bridges Tour, Three Rivers Tour and Fall Foliage Tour.
Custom scenic tours are available, and if you’re feeling especially daring, there’s a doors-off upgrade.
Last summer, a 100-year-old woman celebrated her centenarian status with a helicopter ride.
Spiker plans to keep his eye on the sky now that he can host tours full-time.
“I love to fly and it’s a retirement passion.”

Principal's Message
“resilience is accepting your new reality, even if it's less good than the one you had before.”.
Inarguably, we could say that we have a new currently reality, one that was unexpected and thrust upon us overnight. Regardless, we have all had to adapt to new reality that the COVID-19 global pandemic has created. While we do not know what the fall will bring, we do know that we have become resilient during these times, adapting to what every new day has brought. Social distancing, hand sanitizers, masks and other protective personal equipment have become part of the norm. While this may have been only a part of it, the biggest change for our students and families was the cancellation of in-person classes on March 15. Overnight, arrangements started for emergency remote online learning to happen in literacy and numeracy for elementary students. The physical classroom was usurped by Google Classroom and Google Meets. New social norms during online meetings such as muting microphone had to be learned by both students and adults. Figuring out the online environment was the first priority before getting to the weekly assignments. Our students embraced the new norm. They missed their friends, classmates and teachers and were excited to see others through Google Meets. They logged on each week to see which assignments had been posted. When they weren’t sure, they used the growth mindset skills learned at school to say that they didn’t have a certain skill “yet” and that they could take a deep breath when frustrated. Dalhousie students truly showed up and showed us what they can do. A huge gracias goes out to all of our parents and extended families, who, in many cases, worked full-time at home, taught and took care of their children at the same time. We know that this triple feat is not something for which you signed up. You rose to the occasion and supported your children in their learning in a way that was new to everyone. Kudos to you for your dedication and perseverance! Our teachers and support staff also had to learn the nuances of teaching online without any advance warning. They endeavoured to create tasks to engage students and continue their learning. They learned alongside the students and their families, adjusting as they went along. They displayed their own resilience as they had to teach online while learning about it at the same time. We are proud to say that Dalhousie staff rose to the occasion on a weekly basis. We still do not know what the fall will bring. More decisions will be made August 1. Please check the CBE and Dalhousie websites regularly for updates as well as ensuring that you have consented to receive emails from the CBE. The school will reopen on Thursday, August 27. We look forward to the day where we can be physically together again, safely. Enjoy the summer! #Weareinthistogether

Governor Cooper Tours E.E. Smith High School in Fayetteville, Highlights How Strong Public Schools Make Strong Communities Gov. Cooper Declared 2024 “The Year of Public Schools”
Today, Governor Roy Cooper visited E.E. Smith High School in Fayetteville as part of “The Year of Public Schools” education tour. The Governor was joined by teachers, students, local and state education leaders and local elected officials as he highlighted the outstanding work being done at E.E. Smith High School and Cumberland County public schools and the ways that public education is strengthening North Carolina’s communities.
The Governor again called for fully funding K-12 education as well as meaningful investments in early childhood education and teacher pay in the upcoming legislative session. The Governor also called for a stop to state spending on vouchers for unaccountable and unregulated private schools until North Carolina’s public schools are fully funded.
“From core academics, to military initiatives, to career and technical education, Cumberland County and E.E. Smith High School are preparing the future of our state,” said Governor Cooper. “We need to fully fund our public schools so all students have the chance to succeed.”
“As a graduate of E. E. Smith High School and a veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Liberty, I am proud of the work that we are doing to evolve instruction to prepare our students for an ever-evolving world,” said E.E. Smith High School Principal Larry Parker. “Through our new STEAM Academy, Fire Science Academy, CTE Programs, Avionics, and AI labs, students receive cutting-edge instruction to become problem solvers in college, the armed forces, or our workforce.”
“I am thrilled to welcome Governor Roy Cooper to our school system, where we pride ourselves on preparing lifelong learners to reach their maximum potential,” said Cumberland County Schools Superintendent Dr. Marvin Connelly, Jr. “Whether it's through rigorous academics, hands-on career experiences, or enriching arts and cultural programs, we strive to prepare students to be collaborative, competitive and successful in our global world.”
This year, the Governor will highlight North Carolina’s strong public schools, teachers and staff across the state to show the positive impacts of a well-funded public education system on the state’s economy and communities. The Governor will also spotlight the dangers of underfunding our schools while pouring millions of dollars into an unregulated private school voucher program that sends taxpayer money to private academies.
In Cumberland County, 83.6% of school-aged children attend public schools, and public schools in Cumberland County and across the state excel at preparing students for success from cradle to career.
- The 2023 graduation rate for Cumberland County high school students was 86.6%.
- In 2023, North Carolina public school students earned more than 325,000 workforce credentials while in high school. Nearly 16,012 of those workforce credentials were earned by Cumberland County students.
- North Carolina has the most National Board-certified teachers in the nation – one of the highest recognitions teachers can earn. In Cumberland County, 78 teachers are National Board-certified.
- In 2023, more than one-third of North Carolina high school graduates and 30% of graduates in Cumberland County took a college course for credit while in high school.
However, Republican legislators continue to push policies that undermine and politicize public education. The budget enacted by the legislature last year expanded the private school voucher program by $250 million over the next two years, for a total of $4 billion over the next ten years.
- Under the expanded voucher program, public schools in Cumberland County could lose over $17 million in state education funding just in the first year of the expanded program. That loss in funding not only impacts students, but also Cumberland County’s workforce. In 2022, public schools were the second largest employer in Cumberland County.
During his final year as Governor, Gov. Cooper is committed to prioritizing public schools and to hearing from the many communities across the state who know that strong public schools ensure we have strong communities.
