Interestingly, the Verify Halal application connects with 6,000 local companies and 60 global certification bodies from Australia to Taiwan and South Africa. This number continues to grow from hundreds to thousands from all over the world.

To use this application, users have to do a scan of the product or type a name in the search field. This app also helps when shopping in supermarkets for food products like snacks and chocolates.

The Best Apps for Umrah You Will Need in 2024

Below are the best Umrah apps you will need during your trip to Saudi. Technology is part of our life and we simply can’t live without it so it is a no-brainer when it comes to the fact that we will still use technology for our pilgrimage. The average person spends 2 hours only on social media and we take a lot of information from online sources, like this website you are reading.

Even when it comes to Umrah and the apps for Umrah the only way to find through is through the devices in our hands.

They can be an amazing source of planning, and learning safety when it comes to travelling whether for pilgrimages or general travel.

Here is a review of some useful smartphone apps that can help you get through Umrah and feel deeply connected with Allah SWT in this spiritual journey of a lifetime.

1 Nusuk App – A must have

nusuk app is the best app for umrah the best apps to use for Umrah muslim travel girl

The Nusuk app is the application created by the government of Saudi Arabia to help pilgrims find more information, book their visa, and packages, find helpful information and also book their Umrah and Rawdah slots.

Especially for Medinah, you will need the app to make sure you have access to the Rawdah. It is also the same app that helps you book your Hajj.

The government is trying to simplify the whole process for pilgrims with Nusuk.

You can find them online or on Google & App stores

The previous name of Nusuk was Eatmarna but now it has been removed and everything you need is on Nusuk for your pilgrimage.

2 Haramain Train

The umrah for apps you need, haramain train application - muslim travel girl

Part of the apps for Umrah to have on your phone is the Haramain train If you want to have access to your Haramain train tickets or to make sure you book your train tickets for Makkah and Medinah then downloading the application can make your life easier.

We have a full post on how to use book the Haramain train on our website and will link it down below.

3 Hajj & Umrah App

Hajj and Umrah best app for saudia - the top apps for umrah

It is a user-friendly application with an eye-catching interface. Features of the app include comprehensive guidance for performing Hajj and Umrah, provided in a step-by-step format. Access to videos that are necessary for understanding Hajj and Umrah as well as Duas you can use for your pilgrimage

App Store | Google Play

4 Qibla Connect

qibla connect the best app for umrah for direction for travel

This is an app I have used for years when travelling and it gives you directions for the Qibla as well as reminders. I find it pretty accurate and helpful when it comes to prayer times and new places I visit.

Google Store | App Store

5 Quran Apps

best quran app for umrah - muslim travel girl suggestion

Quran apps for ease during Umrah and Hajj are the best way, especially for those with limited Arabic or travelling light. I have used this app for years and find it very easy to read the Quran in the mosque especially since I am a convert and my Arabic is very limited. It is easy to carry on my phone.

The reviews are very good and there are various reciters as well.

App Store  |  Google Play

Majestic Quran

I also really like the Majestic Quran app which I use on my iPad but they also have mobile apps if you want something lighter. I love how easy it is to understand and also how they provide context for each verse.

Google Play | App Store

Download our DIY Umrah FREE Guide for more information and help

6 Transportation Apps

careem app you can use during umrah in saudia

The two most popular transportation apps in Saudi Arabia are Uber and Careem. They are both on the same principle and I am sure you have used or heard of them in your country. You can order Uber / Careem from Jeddah airport or even for Ziyarah or trips to the museums.

I usually check both apps as sometimes prices can vary. If it is busy I also check both apps.

Uber App Store  |   Google Play

Careem App Store | Google Play

7 Talabat

talabat app for umrah you can use to order food. muslim travelgirl

Another app you might want to save for your Umrah or trip to Saudi Arabia is Talabat. Basically the Saudi version of Deliveroo in the UK or Doordash in the US. If there is something you want to eat but there is no place around your hotel (doubtful) you can always order it for delivery to your hotel. Usually, you will need to pick it up from reception as they call. We have done this several times without a problem. You can also order groceries which is handy if you have children.

8 Roaming while on Umrah / E Sim App

holafly app for umrah you can use for data roaming

This is not strictly for Umrah or Hajj but you have three options when it comes to data during your Umrah. You can use the roaming package from your current provider depending on your package options. In the UK we don’t have many, especially for those with the Giffgaff or Smarty providers. Cheap overall but not handy for travel outside Europe.

The second option is to use Mobily in Saudi and buy a sim card with data for around £20. They have specific packages for tourists for 2 weeks. You can easily buy your sim card from the airport as they have a kiosk there.

The third option is an E-Sim that you can buy from a provider like Holafly. This is the one I use when I travel abroad for ease. They provide options for various countries and overall it is much cheaper and hassle-free than going to a store and waiting for a sim.

I hope this was helpful and gave you ideas of the best Umrah apps you might want to download.

Do you know any other apps that you would like to recommend for Umrah? Share them in the comments below.

Q: What is an Umrah permit?

A: An Umrah permit is issued via Nusuk app and it specifies the timings of when you can perform Umrah. You can find a lot more on the toursit visa page we have.

Q: How can I book an Umrah permit?

A: You book this via the Nusuk app, you need to have a valid visa in order to access it. Once you are there you will see the option for Umrah and Rawdah. They don’t currently need an Umrah permit but it is advised and you can check the timings and see how busy it is.

You definitely need to book via Nusuk for Rawdah however.

Q: What is the Tawakkalna app?

A: You do not need Tawakkalna app anymore, this was to provide the health certificates. Since you don’t need a vaccine and certificate for Umrah, the app is not used.

Q: Is there an app for Umrah guide?

A: The App we have recommended above offers how-to as well as the rituals and steps for Umrah and Hajj.

Q: Can I perform Umrah without a permit?

A: As mentioned,  you can since they don’t always check them. But for a visit to the Rawdah you do.

Q: Are there any apps for finding accommodation during Umrah?

A: We have an article with the best hotels in Makkah for Umrah and there are several apps and online booking platforms. For the best options check our resources where I share my favourite websites to save money on travel.

5 Awesome Travel Hacks For Muslims

Awesome Travel Hacks For Muslims

Many Muslims frequently travel for work, pleasure, or religious reasons. It allows Muslims to travel to new places, meet new people, and learn about different cultures and traditions.

However, travelling can be difficult for Muslims, especially when finding Halal food, adhering to religious beliefs, and navigating unfamiliar situations. Travel advice can be practical in this situation. These are helpful tidbits that can make Muslim travel more accessible and more enjoyable. This article will provide five fantastic travel tips to make your upcoming trip more accessible and enjoyable. These suggestions will be helpful whether you are a seasoned traveller or just starting.

5 Fantastic Muslim Travel Hacks

Hack #1:  make use of a halal travel app..

A Halal travel app is a mobile application that assists Muslim travellers in their search for Halal food, mosques, and other amenities while on the go. These apps frequently include a directory of Halal restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets in cities worldwide, as well as information on nearby mosques and prayer rooms. Some Halal travel apps include translation services, cultural tips, and emergency assistance.

Using a Halal travel app can be highly beneficial for Muslims travelling to unfamiliar locations, as it can eliminate the guesswork of finding Halal food and other amenities. It can also help interact with the local Muslim community and learn about cultural norms and customs.

HalalTrip, HalalGo, and Muslim Pro are some popular Halal travel apps to try. These apps provide various functions and are available for iOS and Android devices. Before downloading a Halal travel app, please research and read reviews to ensure that it meets your needs and preferences. So, these are some of the most popular Halal travel apps to use while travelling.

Hack #2: Pack a prayer mat and a Qibla compass.

Prayer is an essential part of a Muslim’s daily life, especially when travelling. A prayer mat is a small, portable mat that Muslims use to perform their prayers regardless of where they are. It is typically made of lightweight, durable material that is simple to roll up and transport while travelling.

A Qibla compass is a small, portable device that assists Muslims in determining the Qibla or the direction towards the Kaaba in Mecca. The Qibla is essential to Muslim prayer because Muslims must face this direction while praying. A Qibla compass is handy for Muslims travelling to unfamiliar places, as it can assist them in determining the correct orientation of the Qibla even if they are unable to see the Kaaba itself.

There are numerous lightweight, portable options for prayer mats and Qibla compasses on the market. Compact prayer mats made of waterproof and lightweight materials and Qibla compasses small enough to fit in a pocket or purse are popular options. When selecting a prayer mat or Qibla compass, consider factors like durability, portability, and ease of use.

Hack #3: Research Halal dining options ahead of time.

Halal food is important to many Muslims because it refers to permissible food under Islamic law. This includes meat that has been slaughtered and prepared according to Islamic guidelines and other food items that are free of alcohol and pork products.

Finding Halal food can be difficult for Muslims travelling to unfamiliar places. That’s why it’s a good idea to research Halal dining options ahead of time. This can help ensure that you have various travel options and make meal planning easier.

There are several methods for researching Halal dining options ahead of time. One option is to use online resources like Halal travel apps or websites that list Halal restaurants and other food options in cities worldwide. You can also try reaching out to the local Muslim community for recommendations on Halal dining options in the area, whether through social media or by contacting a mosque or community center.

You can make your travel experience more enjoyable and stress-free by researching Halal dining options ahead of time. So, these are some methods for analyzing Halal dining options ahead of time.

Hack #4:  Make use of a multi-purpose scarf.

A multi-purpose scarf can be a handy item to pack for Muslim travellers. It can be used as a shawl or blanket in various situations and a head covering for women, as is required in some Muslim-majority countries.

A multi-purpose scarf, for example, can be wrapped around the head to protect from the sun or wind or draped over the shoulders as a shawl to provide warmth. It can also be used as a blanket on long flights or bus rides or as an emergency pillow.

When shopping for a multi-purpose scarf, look for a lightweight, versatile option that can be packed and worn in various situations. Scarves made of breathable materials like cotton or linen, as well as those with a seamless design that can be worn in multiple ways, are popular choices.

Packing a multi-purpose scarf saves luggage space while also having a versatile item that can serve multiple functions while travelling. So, these are some of the benefits of a multi-purpose scarf for Muslim travellers, as well as some lightweight, versatile scarf options to consider.

5th Tip: Purchase travel insurance.

Travel insurance is vital for any traveller, but it is crucial for Muslims with special needs or concerns while on the road. Travel insurance can protect you financially in the event of unforeseen events like trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage.

It can be beneficial for Muslims to look for travel insurance policies that cover Halal food, prayer accommodations, and other considerations. Some insurance companies provide specialised travel insurance policies for Muslims that address these specific requirements.

It’s a good idea to shop around and compare different travel insurance policies to find the one that best meets your needs and fits your budget. When shopping for travel insurance, read the fine print and understand precisely what is and is not covered.

Purchasing travel insurance lets you travel with peace of mind and be prepared for unexpected situations. So, these are some reasons why investing in travel insurance is critical, especially for Muslims who may have unique needs and concerns while travelling.

We’ve shared five fantastic travel hacks for Muslims in this article. From packing a prayer mat and Qibla compass with a Halal travel app to researching Halal dining options ahead of time, using a multi-purpose scarf, and investing in travel insurance, these hacks can help make Muslim travel more accessible and more enjoyable.

Whether you’re an experienced traveller or just getting started, these travel hacks can help you navigate unfamiliar environments and find the resources you need while on the road. We hope these suggestions will be helpful on your next trip and encourage you to try them. Travel safely!

Sabrina Hanim  •  Jun 18, 2016

The number of mobile apps available these days can be pretty overwhelming, so we've done some work and came up with a list of 9 apps that you'll definitely find handy to have on your mobile!

Here are some great apps you should have on your phone:

1. Muslim Pro

Muslim Pro

If there's only one app you should download on your phone, Muslim Pro would definitely be on top of that list. An app that's already widely used by Muslims around the world, Muslim Pro is the all-in-one app you're looking for if you want prayer times wherever you are, the Holy Quran with audio recitations by multiple reciters and translations in different languages, a Qibla compass, an Islamic calendar, a zakat calculator, the Fortress of the Muslim collection of dua and supplications, and the 99 Names of Allah for you to learn and memorize. You can even use the app to find halal restaurants and mosques around you, share your favourite Quranic verses with your loved ones, send Islamic greeting cards (definitely useful when Eid rolls around!) and check fasting times during Ramadan.

Download Muslim Pro from the iTunes App Store or Google Play .

2.  Quran Companion by Quran Academy

It should be the goal of every Muslim to deepen their relationship with the Quran, whether by increasing in memorisation or recitation of Surahs, or trying to understand its meaning. However, many of us let time pass us by without building a meaningful relationship with the book of Allah due to many reasons, from being too busy with other obligations to thinking that it's just too hard to memorise the Quran (I've definitely been guilty of this!).

That's where the Quran Companion app by Quran Academy comes in.

qurancompanion

With guided lessons to help you memorise the Surahs you want, games and social motivation to get you going, this app is perfect for those who need flexibility and fun in learning the Quran. You can use it to memorise or revise anywhere and any time! I know i'm definitely benefiting from it ?

The Muslim Travel Market Is Growing, But Where Are Its Unicorns?

KrASIA

In this article

Halal tourism, or tourism that’s in accordance with Islamic rules, is a burgeoning global trend, addressing the  world’s 1.8 billion Muslims  who are looking for products and services that match their values.

Technology companies eager to capture this market are on the rise as well.

A UK-based online travel booking site,  HalalBooking.com , just announced it’s on track to achieve a US$1 billion valuation by 2022. That might make it the first tech unicorn in this category.

The site offers halal-friendly accommodation worldwide. It allows customers to filter hotels and villa accommodation by specific features such as the availability of halal food, alcohol-free areas, dedicated women’s facilities like spas and pools, as well as family-friendly entertainment.

According to an official press statement, the company’s net profit reached US$830,000 in 2017.

By end of last year, HalalBooking had listed 1150 properties in 45 countries and said its revenue is likely to be between US$21 and US$22 million for that year.

“In 2019, we forecast to double again to US$40 million and overall, we are on track to achieve our valuation target of US$1 billion in 2022.” CEO Elnur Sayidi said in a statement.

According to analytics company Similarweb, HalalBooking, which claims to be the world’s number 1 for the halal conscious market has about 300,000 monthly web visitors and has so far raised US$800,000 in two funding rounds according to  CrunchBase . Meanwhile, the Malaysia-based  Tripfez  has some 180,000 monthly web visitors and raised one funding round, and Singapore’s Halatrip has some 230,000 with no disclosed funding.

These numbers are small compared to mainstream travel unicorns like Traveloka or Klook, but  The Mastercard-Crescentrating Digital Muslim Travel Report projects that the digital Muslim-friendly travel ecosystem will grow consistently as it estimates that Muslim travellers will spend USD$180 billion by 2026 in online travel purchases.

HalalBooking’s strongest market today is Europe and the company is planning to expand further into GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries and North Africa before entering the Asia Pacific region. Meanwhile, Southeast Asia is also a popular destination for Muslim travellers and home to a significant share of the world’s Muslim people, which makes it an attractive location for companies in the category.

According to the  State of the Global Islamic Economy Report 2018/19  by the Dubai Islamic Economy Development Centre (DIEDC), an Islamic economy research institute, Muslims worldwide spent US$2.1 trillion across the food, beverage, and lifestyle sectors in 2017. This is projected to reach US$3 trillion by 2023. For travel only, the spending was estimated reach US$177 billion in 2017 and is expected to reach US$220 billion by 2020.

According to the  Mastercard-Crescent Rating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2018 , Malaysia and Indonesia, were leading destinations among Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries,  while Singapore and Thailand were the top-ranked destinations outside of OIC member countries.

Moreover, the report said, Southeast Asia will welcome over 18 million Muslim visitor arrivals by 2020 which represents around 15% of all visitor arrivals in the region.

muslim travel app

Indonesia, as Southeast Asia’s largest economy and also the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, has said it hopes to attract at least five million foreign travellers from the halal tourism segment in 2019, which would represent around 25% of the total foreign tourist target of 20 million.

Indonesia’s minister of tourism Arief Yahya told  local media  last year that he wants to see Indonesia move up to the first rank in the GMTI index, as the friendliest tourism destination for global Muslim travellers.

muslim travel app

Opportunities in the space extending beyond travel booking. All forms of digital content can enable Muslim travellers to better plan and experience their trips. Today’s travellers will turn to social networking services to stay connected, and community-based halal food and travel guides have abounded in recent years.

In Southeast Asia, Singapore-based media tech startup  Have Halal, Will Travel (HHWT)  offers resources and tools to help Muslims plan their trips, especially in finding halal food in the non-muslim majority destinations. Started as a community blog in 2015, HHWT is now evolving into a dedicated travel planning app for Muslim travellers.

In 2015, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) launched  Thailand Muslim Friendly , an app that’s part of the strategy to position Thailand as a Muslim-friendly destination. Available in four languages, English, Thai, Arabic, and Malay, the app is targeting visitors from UAE and neighbouring countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Other platforms that offer similar services are  Halal Navi  from Japan, Australia’s  Halal Advisor , UK-based  Halal Spot.

In an interview conducted by  GMTI  about investment insights for Muslim travel market, Christian Nader, the vice president of development for the Shaza Hotel chain, says that the industry needs more players who fulfil the needs of Muslim travellers and who offer more diverse products across various segments, including in the digital space, because millennials dominate the current halal travel sector.

“Technology to this generation is an essential part of life and any component of the tourism chain must embrace this fact. What makes innovation even more important to Muslim tourism is the fact that this space is new and growing fast. People have only recently started paying attention to that market and like anything new, the industry starts first by focusing on fulfilling the basic needs before looking at innovation and more advanced needs. So, there is room for growth,” said Nader.

Muslim millennial travellers as the driving force undoubtedly play an important role in expanding the global economic impact of Muslim tourism.

For startups like HalalBooking, Tripfez and Halaltrip to achieve breakout success, the ecosystem of market demand, and halal-friendly startup funding sources need to mature.

So here is the list of Apps and Websites you'll ever need as a Muslim traveller (we know you'll thank us for this!).

1. Finding Flight Tickets - Skyscanner

The first and most crucial part of your trip is booking the flight tickets. Yes, basically the existence of your trip is still vulnerable till you secured a flight ticket.  And everybody knows that finding a ticket that suits your budget and holiday plan is just like finding a needle in a haystack. Because everybody is having the same public holiday and everyone wants to go to the same place *arrrrgh*! Worry not, with Skyscanner you can scan the best deal for your next flight.

In Skyscanner, you can compare flight tickets based on the price, number of stops, time of departure, journey duration, and airlines! Get the price alerts for your trip months before the D-day.  Skyscanner will email you when the price of your targeted ticket get cheaper. That way you can monitor the movement of the price without hurting your eyes facing airline website every days and night!

2. Booking accommodation - Booking.com

The next thing you'll have to take care is booking accommodation (well, unless you plan to sleep in a sleeping bag!). Many things have to be considered before you book a place to stay. The location, the comfort and amenities of the place, the price, the Muslim friendliness, etc.

booking,com

Booking.com allows you to book all types of room from the Luxurious hotel, backpacker hostel, guesthouse, home stay, bed and breakfast, everything in just one app! You can also find the suitable place easily by filtering based on your preferred room type, budget, facilities, ratings, and many more. The best part is many of the rooms listed here accept payment on the spot and you can still cancel or modify your booking before a specified date. A small tips from us: try to check the map and choose one which is close to the tourist attraction or at least to a train station!

3. Finding Halal Restaurants and Mosques - Halal Navi

Travelling to Muslim-minority countries like Japan can be a real challenge as the number of Halal restaurants and mosques are limited. And of course, we don't want to  give up on our obligation as a Muslim to consume only halal foods and pray on time. But no need to worry, in Halal Navi apps you can do even more than that.

halal navi find halal restaurant and mosque

Wherever you feel hungry you can just open Halal Navi in your smartphones and find nearby halal restaurants . Not only that, you can also plan your trip in advance by searching Halal restaurants and mosque nearby the places you want to go during your trip (you can search just by keying in the tourist spots/ your hotels!) and bookmark them . Later during the trip, you can just open the bookmark you made and navigate yourself to the restaurants and mosques (It connects the location to Google Map!).

What makes Halal Navi different is you can check review and Halal Tips from other Muslim foodies and many of the users live in Japan (who knows better than the locals that speak the language right?). So you can find the best place to eat and also communicate with the Muslim community to seek for advice about the restaurant or the place you want to go. The Halal Tips information let you choose restaurants that suit your Halal tolerance. You can check whether the restaurant is Halal certified, serve alcohol, own by Muslim, separate the utensils used, and many other conditions. Not all restaurants in Japan are Halal certified, and some of them have different standards of what Muslim-Friendly means, so it is better to check out the tips and reviews to avoid any doubts 🙂

P.S: An insider information just for you, Halal Navi will add Halal Store and Halal friendly hotel in their listing. So download the apps and keep yourself updated!

4. Creating Travel Itinerary - TripAdvisor

The most exciting part of planning a trip is arranging the itinerary. Of course, you want to go to the famous attraction of the city, don't ya? But how do you know which place to go? Rather than finding in Google (that generalise everything), TripAdvisor a better place to create your very own itinerary.

tripadvisor

It is probably the most famous platform of traveller around the world. With more than 350 million reviews, TripAdvisor will let you know better of places to go in the city. The many reviews from other travellers will give you some insight of the ticket price, recommended activities, when to go, and many more. You can also ask in the forum for anything you want to know about your trip.

5. Getting Around The City - Google Map

You probably do not like riding a taxi while travelling because you just can't afford it (Same here!). Thus once you touch down in your destination, you will need a navigation to go around the city.  Basically, it will help you to get to the place you have listed down in your itinerary.

google-map

Does anyone in this world never use Google Map? This is probably just all you need to navigate you around the city. Not only that, Google Map also provides information such as the Opening hour, website and phone number of places you want to go. It also has street view features so you can see how the place actually looks like. The best part is you can download the offline map so you can still open it later although you have no internet in your phone.

6. Speak The Language - Google translate

You can easily lose in this country that almost doesn't speak English at all. Let alone speaking to the locals, even understanding simple sign road can break your head! You don't have to master the local language if you only travel for a week (because you'll need years to actually learn Japanese T_T). You just need to install Google Translate on your phone.

google-translate

Google translate has just launched its new feature, by hovering your smartphone in front of a piece of text to instantly translate the Japanese Kanji to English like their cool promo video below 😮

Seriously, what a life saver! You can now read all those road signs and restaurant menu! You can even use the translation feature offline by downloading the database before you go offline. What's more important? They have a database of 90 languages around the world!

7. Finding Wi-fi - Japan Connected Free Wifi

If you are travelling on a budget you might think gazillion times before buying a pocket wi-fi or mobile data. But who can live without the internet these days? NO ONE! Japan is a country with a wide public wi-fi coverage. So you can actually depend on free wife while you are there!

free-wifi-japan

With Japan Connected Free wi-fi, you can connect to the free wifi in more than 144,000 spots (Airports, stations, convenience stores, restaurants, sight-seeing spots, and many more) with just a single tap. But how do I search free wi-fi spots in the apps if I don't have the internet at the first place? Nah, you can search the free wi-fi spots (in major cities) offline too. Just don't forget to download the offline map before hand!

8. Public Transportation - Japan Travel

The majority, if not all, tourist attractions in Japan can be accessed by public transport. And most of you might choose to buy JR pass before you arrive in Japan. Japan travel apps will guide you in riding Japan public transportation.

japan-travel

It shows you all available routes you can take to reach your destination with all type of public transport. Not only that, you can tick the option of having JR pass and it will suggest you the routes that can be accessed with JR pass. It also shows the real-time schedule and also ticket price! If you have no internet connection, you can check the routes from the map they provide. In addition to that, you can find useful spots such as currency exchange, ATM and tourist information in this app.

So, are you ready for a new adventure? Get your travel dates and install all of these apps on your phone now! Planning a trip has never been this easy.

PS: Don't forget to get the latest Halal Navi app from below and we hope to see you around 😉

7 Useful Apps Every Traveler Should Know About

Technology continues to make travel easier for millions of people around the globe. New apps offer travelers fresh ways to research a destination, connect with fellow globetrotters, communicate with locals, and track their flights. As a full-time digital nomad , I’ve learned the importance of having the right tools at your disposal when on the road.

Over the past few years, I’ve visited dozens of countries, flown hundreds of thousands of miles, and tested countless apps to find the ones that prove to be the most helpful. And while tools like Meetup, Google Maps, Google Translate, currency converters, and vacation rental , airline, and hotel–specific apps are in fact indispensable on most trips, I find that many of the best travel apps are still undiscovered by my fellow travelers.

Below, seven travel apps that make life on the go markedly easier (and more fun), from real-time flight trackers to photo-sharing gems—all of these apps are free, but some have paid pro versions worth considering. Don’t think these apps are only for full-time travelers—they prove useful for every type of traveler, whether you're in a brand-new destination or back for a return visit.

Discover the best apps for travelers:

Apps for flying, apps for exploring, apps for photo sharing.

My favorite app on this list is Flighty, a must-have for any frequent flier . The free version is fantastic, but I recommend splurging for the premium version, which gives you even more useful information and comes at a reasonable cost of $48 per year. The functionality it provides more than justifies the price.

The free version allows you to input all future flights plus past journeys you've taken within the last year. It provides updated information if any schedule changes occur to upcoming flights and allows you to track all the miles you’ve flown in one place.

The other main benefit is that it allows you to share your flight information with friends and family members who are also on Flighty. They will receive real-time updates about your flight without you having to text them. My parents love to make sure I’m safe so they appreciate getting detailed information about my travels—even while I’m in the air.

Flightradar24 is a favorite app among fellow aviation geeks. It lets you track almost any aircraft you see in the air throughout the day or night. You can track your own flight, a friend's flight, or any plane you see in real-time. It shares plenty of cool data, like the altitude, speed, arrival and departure airports and times, and tail number.

Image may contain: Logo, and First Aid

There are tons of eSIM apps on the market, but Airalo is probably my favorite, with digital SIM cards available for dozens of countries. I find it to be the most reliable and offers the best data packages. It can be a little pricey, but it is the best option if you’re only taking short trips. Holafly is another eSIM app that offers unlimited data and works well, but I find the app to be much more glitchy than Airalo and would recommend using the desktop version.

Image may contain: Symbol, First Aid, Text, and Logo

This one is for the planner of the group. Wanderlog merges the best of a bunch of different apps into one. Imagine an app that lets you plan a trip with ease: collaborate with friends as if you’re on Google Docs, manage expense tracking like Splitwise, and have a central place for your reservations, checklists, and more. Tripit is a similar travel planner app, so you can download both and get a feel for which interface you like better.

Image may contain: Paper, and Ice

Been allows you to track the countries you’ve visited and make a wish list of places you can’t wait to cross off your travel bucket list . It gives you information like the percentage of the globe you’ve been to and shows you a world map of your trips. It’s always fun to add in a new country whenever I reach my destination.

Image may contain: Sign, Symbol, Road Sign, and Weapon

This app was introduced to me by fellow nomads I met at a cafe in Montevideo, Uruguay . It automatically tracks your route across the world, allowing you to quickly upload pictures throughout your travels that can be viewed by anyone who has access to your profile. It’s an excellent way to share important moments with loved ones without needing to send photos to each person individually. Users can also create easily accessible guides filled with up-to-date information to help you plan your own trip.

Image may contain: Symbol, Number, Text, and First Aid

Steller is another app that a friend recently introduced me to, and I’ve quickly fallen in love with it. It uses a combination of AI and user experiences to help you plan trips around the globe. From recommendations of things to see, like the Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires or the Royal Palace of Naples, to full guidebooks created by users, you can get inspired, book experiences, and discover hidden gems within this app.
