Worst Time to Visit Key West: Opinion by Hopdes Team

Our travel specialist, Sara Anwar , said the following about her trip to Key West, “ We have missed the hurricane season by a week. I realized that tourists in hurricane-prone locations are removed from the region as soon as a warning is issued. There wouldn’t be somewhere for you to stay, and whatever money you’d already paid on lodging would be wasted.”

Zonash Arshad also visited Key West during the month of August. She said, ” I shouldn’t have been to Key West at the height of hurricane season. Some of the excursions couldn’t go forward because of the possibility of severe waves. During our vacation, we had heavy rains that prevented us from engaging in any outside activity .”

I am thinking of going the first week of November, but may not be a good idea. I am always in the TA forum and I am sick to my stomach reading these awsome reviews and looking at pictures over and over. Its been 3 yrs since I've visited! thanks

worst time to visit florida keys

I would say either May, June or July, although I like the heat. The problem with the winter months for me is the water is too cold. Like Lowrider, I like to be able to walk right in without making little girly noises. ;) LOL

worst time to visit florida keys

Early Nove the water is still really nice. The temp can be in the low 80's so its still really comfortable.

worst time to visit florida keys

I have to agree with Cruisemom! I really like early June as the rates drop to low season. I don't mind it HOT either. It's just as hot in Philly, if I can be hot in KW, I would rather be there!

' class=

November and December are both nice for walking/biking and other outdoor stuff. You aren't sweating and uncomfortable. So you may need a sweatshirt at night. But I like slightly cool 70"s weather. G

worst time to visit florida keys

I like November because it's already so dark and cold here in the midwest. I would probably feel differently if I wanted to spend time in the water, which I don't.

We've had great weather, although sometimes a bit cool, every trip.

We were there last May arriving right after Memorial Day. It was pretty hot and humid-not a big issue for us as it was just like our weather at home! The ocean was still pretty chilly but felt really good to cool you off.

We were there last Dec (week before Christmas) and the weather was awesome! We never broke a sweat walking and biking all around. There were people in the ocean but it was a little chilly for me so I didn't go past my ankles. There had been a cold snap the week before but it was pretty freak. Locals we talked to said that the middle of Dec leading up to Christmas week is a very slow time so nothing was crowded-it was almost like having KW to the locals and ourselves which was really cool.

We did stop at Bahia Honda on our way out of KW and the water seemed warmer, maybe it doesn't get deep as fast so there's a little more time for warming or it was just a warmer day-I'm not oceanographer so I have no idea of the why's!

We're looking at the week after Thanksgiving this year.

' class=

May and June are also nice if you want warm and not too many crowds.

Worst? September. Third month of summer, hot, steamy for too long, and hurricanes.

we like mid march...it gives us something to look forward to get us thru the tundra weather in Michigan. this year was mid 70's all week, 15 minutes of rain.

Discover The Ideal Time To Visit This Florida Keys Paradise For Perfect Weather And Quiet Beaches

Wyatt Johnson

Fancy uncovering the magic of the Sunshine State ?

There’s a treasure trove of adventures waiting for you in the Florida Keys, and I’m here to guide you through finding that perfect slice of paradise.

Whether it’s for that sun-soaked solitude or a family-friendly frolic by the sea, let’s dive into the secrets of timing your next Keys getaway just right!

Best Times to Visit the Florida Keys for Smaller Crowds

florida keys 1

Scouring the calendar for that sweet spot when the throngs have thinned and the traffic has tapered?

Look no further than the leisurely lull between the festive winter season and the sizzling summer surge.

What’s more, as schools welcome back students in autumn, you’ll find the Keys quieter than a sea turtle’s siesta.

Late spring is your sneaky little secret for the perfect getaway.

florida keys 2

It’s that sweet spot in the calendar where the sun decides to play nice, and the masses haven’t yet descended like a flock of seagulls on a dropped chip.

The air has just the right amount of warmth, like a gentle hug from Mother Nature herself, without the sweaty, overbearing squeeze of the summer sun.

Now, as the days stretch out lazily ahead, the world is your oyster—or should I say, your beachside cabana.

You get to wander through streets where you’re not playing human bumper cars.

florida keys 3

Museums, parks, and cafes?

They’re practically rolling out the red carpet for you, minus the paparazzi.

And if that isn’t sweet enough, wait until fall rolls around, closing the chapter on hurricane season.

It’s like the weather’s had its coffee and finally calmed down.

You can stroll along the coast without the wind trying to introduce your hat to the next town over.

The best part?

You’re not sharing your sunset views with a crowd that resembles a concert mosh pit.

florida keys 4

It’s just you, the horizon, and the serenity that comes with having dodged the tourist bullet.

Isn’t that something?

Bear in mind, though, the Keys’ version of fall won’t have you reaching for a sweater.

Expect hot, humid, and the occasional rain shower – nature’s way of keeping you on your toes!

Best Times to Visit the Florida Keys for Good Weather

Weather-wise, each month in the Keys throws its own little party, complete with pros and cons.

Summer’s invite promises warm waters and peak boating season, but it’s also the time when hurricanes RSVP without fail.

florida keys 5

From June to November, keep an eye on the forecast, especially during the peak storm period from mid-August to mid-October.

When Old Man Winter makes his rounds, from November to February, he tends to forget his frosty demeanor down here.

Even January, our chilliest customer, hovers around a mild 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sure, the water’s got a nip to it, but for those of you keen on diving or snorkeling, a shortie wetsuit will make you feel right as rain.

Many seasoned Keys visitors cast their votes for late spring – the weather’s congenial, the hurricane soirées haven’t started, and the waters beckon warmly without the summer swarm descending.

Best Times to Visit the Florida Keys for Lower Prices

florida keys 6

Hunting for a deal in the Keys can feel like searching for a conch pearl – rare but rewarding.

Your best bet for budget-friendly bliss falls in those off-peak periods like September and November.

The winter depths and summer peaks can send prices skyward, but May and June sometimes whisper sweet nothings to your wallet with shoulder-season specials.

Best Times to Visit the Florida Keys for Being Out on the Water

florida keys 7

Ah, the water – where the Keys truly shine.

While sandy stretches are a precious commodity, the reefs are as abundant as the stars in a clear night sky.

Whether you’re eager to explore underwater wonders, reel in the catch of the day, or simply sail from one sun-kissed spot to another, the Keys are your oyster.

Winter waters may give some Floridians the chills, but summer counters with a balmy embrace – just mind the sun’s sting and those pesky afternoon thunderstorms.

florida keys 8

Spring sees temperatures climbing in and out of the water, albeit with a breezy side.

Early fall, on the other hand, offers a more temperate tableau, though rain may pop in uninvited.

Lobster lovers, mark your calendars for the “mini season” – a two-day seafood spree before the main lobster season kicks off.

It’s a time best enjoyed from your own vessel, though charters are on hand for those without a boat to their name.

Just a heads up: the Overseas Highway can get as packed as a Key Lime pie during this crustacean celebration.

Worst Times to Visit the Florida Keys

florida keys 9

Navigating the optimal time to visit the Keys can be as tricky as a mangrove maze.

The allure of mini season is undeniable, yet its popularity can be its own undoing.

Similarly, dreaming of a Christmas beach bash is shared by many, inflating holiday hotel rates quicker than a blowfish in distress.

If you wilt faster than an ice cream cone in July, the summer heat in the Keys might not be your cup of iced tea.

Conversely, winter warriors seeking to snorkel or dive might find the water temps less than welcoming.

And of course, hurricanes – they’re the uninvited guests that can turn a vacation vibe into a rapid retreat anytime from June through November.

But not to worry, you’ll usually get a heads up to reroute your holiday plans.

Now, before you plan your visit to Florida Keys, have a quick look at this map :

So, who’s ready to set their clocks to island time and discover the Keys’ quieter, sunnier side?

When will you be packing your flip-flops and setting sail for those laid-back shores?

A Detailed Guide on the Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys

Florida keys weather.

Like I mentioned above, there’s really no bad time to visit the Florida Keys. This is because the Florida Keys weather is tropical year round !

To start, I wanted to give you a quick overview of what type of temperatures you can expect in the Florida Keys across all four seasons! I’ll go into more specific details (about hurricanes, rain, etc.) in the later sections, but this is a great starting point!

Key West Average temperatures

I chose Key West to pull data from, but the average across all the Keys is typically very similar!

As you can see, temperatures in the Keys are quite warm year-round . It rarely dips below 60, and most days are filled with sunshine.. sounds perfect right?! Almost… but keep reading to find out the cons of each season!

Due to the wonderful weather, the best time to visit the Florida Keys for events is between January and April. During this time, you can attend famous festivals and events like the Seven Mile Bridge Run , Conch Republic Independence Celebration, and the Florida Keys Seafood Festival!

Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys For Weather

In my opinion, the best time to visit the Florida Keys for weather is March – April. Of course, this is totally subjective to what you define as “good weather”. Some people prefer the extremely mild temperatures in December and January.

In general, avoid visiting in June, July, August, and September if you want to avoid sweltering temperatures, afternoon rain storms, and hurricanes! 😉

Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys For Low Prices

Naturally, the cheapest time to visit the Florida Keys is when the weather is the worst.. aka June, July, August, and September! As mentioned above, summer in the Florida Keys are hot and humid. Afternoon rain storms are extremely common. Plus, you run the risk of having your vacation cancelled by a hurricane.

Some might call summer the worst time to visit the Florida Keys. However, I disagree. As a Floridian, I can put up with the soaring temperatures. If a hurricane comes, I can simply cancel my vacation! I love visiting the Florida Keys in the summer because the crowds are small and hotel prices are low!

Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys For Boating

Similar to the above, the best time to get out on the water in the Florida Keys is summertime. In the summer, the ocean temperature in the Keys is nice and warm (around 86ºF in August!). You’ll typically be blessed with calm seas and sunny days. In addition, summer is the start of mini lobster season , which is a very popular time to visit the Keys!

Visiting the Florida Keys: Breakdown by Season

Below I’ll provide an overview of what it’s like to visit the Florida Keys in each season! This includes a more detailed breakdown of the weather patterns, plus a list of different events you can attend!

Visiting the Florida Keys in the Spring

Months : March – May Weather : Cool with little to no rain! Crowds : Minimal, except for spring breakers Events : Seafood festivals & fishing tournaments!

Spring Weather in the Florida Keys

Let’s start with Spring time, because it’s personally my favorite time to visit the Keys.

From March through May, the weather in the Keys is just perfect. Highs typically stay under the mid-80°s, and it’s nice and cool in the evenings. Plus, rainfall is pretty low, and so are crowds!!

Hotels shouldn’t be too pricey in March – May, as you are coming off high season (winter). However, there may be some crowds in Key West due to Spring Break, so keep that in mind!

Key West House

Spring Events in the Florida Keys

Here are a list of the most popular events in the Keys that take place from March – May:

March : Key West Orchid Fair Islamorada Seafood and Art Festival Marathon Seafood Festival St. Patrick’s Day Key West Bar Stroll April : Florida Keys Island Fest Seven Mile Bridge Run Underwater Easter Egg Hunt Key West Southernmost Air Show Spectacular Jimmy Buffett Day at Margaritaville Beach House Conch Republic Independence Celebration Marathon Sailfish Tournament 7 Mile Offshore Grand Prix May: Key Largo Triathlon Mother’s Day Dolphin Tournament Key West Dolphin Fishing Tournamen t

Visiting the Florida Keys in the Summer

Months : June – August Weather : HOT and HUMID (also hurricanes) Crowds : Minimal! Events : Pride, Key Lime Festival, Lobster Season

Summer Weather in the Florida Keys

Unlike a lot of places, summer is actually low season in the Florida Keys!

Why… you might ask? Two words. Heat . and. Humidity

If you’re not used to them, summers in south Florida can be particularly brutal! We are talking highs in the upper 90s and humidity up to 80%. So, it can be very unpleasant if you’re not used to this type of weather.

This is why a lot of people avoid visiting the Florida Keys in the summertime and why summer is the cheapest time to visit. If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, summer is the perfect time to visit the Florida Keys.

Summer is also the best time for snorkeling and scuba diving in the Keys . The ocean is warm, the seas are calm, and the water is clear!

worst time to visit florida keys

In addition to the temps, June 1st marks the beginning of hurricane season . I’ll dive more into hurricane season in the next section, but one tip here: make sure you book refundable tickets and hotels if you are planning to visit during hurricane season!

In terms of events, one of the biggest draws to visiting the Florida Keys in the summer is the start of Lobster season! Mini season is the last Wednesday and Thursday in July , followed by the regular season stretching from August 6 through March 31 .

You will normally see an uptick in hotel prices and crowds during mini season and the beginning of lobster season, but then it levels out!

Summer Events in the Florida Keys

Here are a list of other events that take place in the Keys during the summer season: June : Skipper’s Dolphin Tournament Coralpalooza Key West Pride Week July : Key West Mermaid Festival Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks Key Lime Festival Underwater Music Festival Key West Lionfish Derby August : Lobsterfest Key West Key Largo Triathlon Key West Tropical Heat

Visiting the Florida Keys in the Fall

Months : September – November Weather : Rainy then Cool Crowds : Moderate Events : Fantasy Fest, Key West Seafood Festival

Fall Weather in the Florida Keys

Fall in the Florida Keys should really be split into two seasons..

During the first half, from the beginning of September to about mid-October, it’s basically just a continuation of summer.

Hurricane season is in full swing. It’s still extremely hot. And it rains almost every afternoon..

If you’re visiting this time of year, like I mentioned above, make sure to have a Plan B and book everything refundable. The reason is, 95% of hurricanes pop up in August – October, and they really pop up out of nowhere.

Florida Keys sunset

Unfortunately, I have had to cancel trips within a few days’ notice because of hurricanes, so it’s best to be prepared! Again, if you’re looking for less crowds and lower hotel prices, this can still be a great time to visit! Just expect some rain, and be prepared if things go awry!

However, from mid-October through November , temperatures start to cool and rain chances fall. October – November can be a beautiful time to visit the Keys – everything is pretty mild during this time. Plus, there are not many crowds!

Fall Events in the Florida Keys

Here is a list of other events that take place in the Keys during the fall season:

September : Womenfest Key West Florida Keys Lionfish Derby Big Gay Key West October : Key West Fantasy Fest November : Key West Offshore World Race Backcountry Fishing Tournament Key West Film Festival

Visiting the Florida Keys in the Winter

Months : December – February Weather : Cool/Mild Crowds : HIGH Events : Fantasy Fest, Key West

Winter Weather in the Florida Keys

Ahh.. winter in the Keys.. the snow on the ground…

JUST kidding 😉

Winter in the Keys is very similar to Spring in the Keys, except you might need a light jacket!

For real, the weather in the Florida Keys from December to February is absolutely to die for.. With highs in the 70s, and lows in the mid-60s, you will still see plenty of people in shorts and flip flops.

palm tree in front of blue water

The water temperature is still swimmable (although you might want a wetsuit!)

And it BARELY rains..

Sounds too good to be true right? All of these perks come at the cost of higher hotel prices, more crowds, etc. So if you’re trying to save money on your trip to the Keys, winter might not be the best time to visit.

Winter Events in the Florida Keys

Not surprisingly, there are TONS of festivals in the Keys during this time of year thanks to the great weather. Here are some of the most popular:

Packing for the Florida Keys

Luckily, your packing list for the Keys won’t vary much from season to season. Here is what I recommend bringing along! Don’t forget to check out my guide on What to Wear in Key West for all my packing tips!

  • Sunscreen ( Supergoop is my favorite!)
  • Snorkel Gear (if you don’t have your own, you can rent some)
  • Polarized Sunglasses ( these are adorable and inexpensive!)
  • Bathing Suits
  • Waterproof sandals (I love my Reefs !)
  • Kimono/Cover Up
  • Floppy Hat ( this one rolls up for easy packing)
  • Umbrella/rain jacket
  • Bug Repellent

Other Things You Should Know

Hotels in the Keys can fill up FAST in high season or around major events and festivals. I recommend booking six months in advance if you know you’ll be visiting during one of these times. Make sure you read the reviews on TripAdvisor before choosing a hotel!

Like I mentioned above, if you’re planning to visit the Keys during hurricane season, make sure to book a refundable room. I always use Booking.com because they have great cancellation policies!

If you’re visiting the Florida Keys for the first time, I highly recommend renting a car and driving from Key Largo to Key West so you can really see all that the Florida Keys have to offer. But if you’re short on time, a weekend trip from Miami to Key Largo also fits the bill!

Finally, don’t forget to check out my Ultimate Florida Keys Travel Guide , which has even more details on where to stay, things to do, and other helpful tips to help plan your epic Florida Keys adventure!!

Wondering when is the Best Time to Visit Key West ?

The best time to travel to Key West is a subjective opinion that can differ from one person to the next. Different seasons will meet different needs of different types of travelers. If you are needing to escape the harsh winters where you live and don’t mind paying higher accommodation rates or waiting longer for a table at a restaurant, then the winter months are a perfect time for you to visit.

If you are traveling on a tight budget and want to get the absolute best bang for your buck and get to experience Key West in its quietest season, summertime is the time for you to visit this tropical paradise.

The heat, humidity, and regular afternoon storms make summer in Key West a rough time for those who can’t tolerate heat and humidity well. The fall and spring seasons offer a nice middle ground between winter and spring. I believe the best time to travel to Key West taking cost, fewer crowds, weather, and events into account, is in the spring, toward the end of April.

I will break down what traveling to Key West means in each month of the year, and let you decide when the best time to go to Key West is for yourself.

Best Time to Visit Key West (Also When NOT to Travel there!)

Winter months.

The winter time is the most popular time to travel to Florida, the weather is often the warmest and most mild out of the entire USA during these months.

It is dry season, particularly in the tropical area of the Florida Keys, so the humidity is down and you aren’t plagued with everyday thunderstorms. There is typically a constant breeze from the tradewinds and it is sunny with an average temperature in the high 70s.

In the months of December through February in Florida the weather is near perfect. This delightful weather also causes the winter to be the most crowded and most expensive time to travel to Key West for accommodations, experiences, and food. Some of the most popular events and festivals are held during the winter months that attract people from all over the world.

Travelers who are interested in a rowdier holiday, believe that crowds add to the charm and excitement of Key West. You can easily achieve a party-filled holiday during this time of year. There are parties at almost every bar and venue that you walk into at night, especially on Duval Street.

Tip: Many people visit Key West as part of a Miami to Key West road trip.  The best time to drive from Miami to Key West is when there is less traffic on the roads.

best time to go to key west

December tends to be one of the most expensive times of year to visit Key West. Because of this, I did some research on fun free activities in Key West that are available to you and fun for the whole family if you decide to take your holiday in December.

You can pack a picnic and find a good spot on Duval Street to watch the annual Key West Holiday Parade. Every year, it is hosted on December 3rd at 7 pm. The parade kicks off at the corner of Truman Avenue and Eisenhower Drive and comes to a close at the corner of Duval Street and Front Street.

For those with an interest in history and mechanics, there is a Holiday Classic Car Show hosted on December 18th from 11 am to 3 pm at Historic Seaport. It is held in the main parking lot on Caroline and Margaret Square.

The Holiday Boat Parade is held on December 9th and offers you a view of an armada of vessels and ships decorated to the fullest with lights, tinsel, and more.

If you want to get a little closer to the action, you can get a ticket with Classic Harbor Line Charters and get to ride on their impressive pirate-ship-like schooner known as Schooner America 2.0. Tickets cost $104 and will give you three hours onboard this beautiful ship. You will get a front-row seat to over 25 boats decked out to the fullest while sipping hot cider and conch soup provided by the Classic Harbor Line Crew.

The weather in Key West in January is extremely mild compared to pretty much everywhere else in the country during that time.

There is an average low temperature of 65℉ and an average high temperature of 75℉. You can expect around 4 days of rainfall, although it is typically relatively dry for the most part. Because of Key West’s lovely weather in January, some of the most fun and popular events are held in January.

For the foodies of the group, a visit to the Florida Keys Seafood Festival is a must. The festival is held on January 13th and 14th, and tickets for general admission cost $10 and grant you access for both days, and children 12 and under get in for free. It is held in Bayview Park, and the purchase of a ticket enters you into a raffle for $250 worth of seafood. Proceeds from the event go to sustainable fisheries management and youth scholarships.

If you aren’t fulfilled with one food festival, be sure to grab tickets to the Key West Food and Wine Festival . The 2024 festival has a Spanish theme, offering culinary delicacies and cultural staples. The event is held from January 23rd-28th. Tickets go on sale October 1st, I would recommend getting your tickets in advance to ensure entry.

If you and your family are country music fans, then you will have to grab tickets to the Mile 0 5-Day Red Dirt and Americana Music Festival . Tickets start at $500 per person for general admission and guarantee you a hootin’ and hollerin’ time.

February is one of the coldest months of the winter, causing it to be one of the most popular times to travel to Key West. It is the best month to visit Key West if you hate the extreme heat. February is also one of the most expensive times of year to visit this quaint island town.

It is likely that you will need dinner reservations for every restaurant that you plan to eat at, if you would like to be seated at a reasonable hour.

For those who appreciate the arts, I recommend visiting the annual Old Days Art Festival in Key West which is held from February 25th through 26th in the Truman Waterfront Park. The event is hosted by the Key West Art Center.

Spring in Key West

In my opinion, springtime is the most pleasant time of the year to visit the Keys. Seasonal crowds have begun to subside, giving you a bit more space and freedom.  Prices are not at their lowest out of the year but also are not as high as they are in the winter months.

Although, Key West is a popular spring break spot between between March and May. Be sure to expect families with children and rowdy college students. The spring break college crowd can make for a lively stay if you are staying close to Duval Street or some late-night bars.

From March to May you may be blessed with seeing some migratory birds, including the Least Tern and Antillean Nighthawk as they make their way through the keys during the spring.

Key West in March:

Key West weather in March is still relatively mild, which is why accommodation and excursion prices are still on the high end. March in Key West has an average high temperature of 78℉ and an average low temperature of 68℉.

It is still very dry out and you can expect about 3 days of rainfall on average. One of Key West’s local traditions, the “Conch Honk” occurs on the first Saturday of every March. It is a Conch Shell Blowing Contest in the garden of the Oldest House Museum at 322 Duval Street. In 2024, the event falls on March 5th.

It is free to participate and there are conchs available for sale for those who didn’t come equipped with their own.

If you are interested in getting an inside look into some of Key West’s most incredible homes and gardens, you can join the annual Key West House and Garden Tour hosted on March 17th-18th. The event is held by the non-profit Old Island Restoration Foundation. It is recommended that you purchase tickets in advance, as spots fill up quickly.

least busy time to visit key west

The end of April is the best time of year to visit Key West . The heat and humidity have risen just enough to scare off the majority of tourists, and you will find that accommodations, food, and activities are all slightly more affordable.

April will bring you an average high temperature of 82℉ and an average low temperature of 71℉.  It is still technically dry season, but you can expect about 3 days of rainfall.

If you plan to visit towards the end of April, you will be able to make it to the Conch Republic Independence Celebration , April 23rd is the big day of celebration for the Conch Republic’s “secession”. The act of secession was merely satire, and came about in 1982 when the US military held a border control blockade of the Florida Keys.

Citizens of Key West organized a “secession” and declared war against the United States, only to surrender after 1 minute and after asking for 1 billion dollars in foreign aid. The Conch Republic lives on mostly as a tourist attraction. 2024 will be Key West’s 42nd annual Independence Celebration and the activities will begin on April 20th and conclude on April 29th.

For the foodies of the group, you can visit A Taste of Key West , on April 24th from 6-9 pm located at Truman Waterfront Park. General admission is free to walk around and check everything out.

There are also different tiers of tickets that are available for purchase that will grant you a different amount of goodies according to the price. If your family is interested in seeing a Naval Air Show, there is one hosted in Boca Chica Field on April 15th-16th. Admission is free for all ages.

Key West in May:

May brings slightly warmer temperatures and the slowing of tourism becomes more noticeable. Afternoon thunderstorms start to creep their way into the daily routine towards the end of the month.

Throughout the month of May, you will get an average high temperature of 88℉ and an average low temperature of 78℉. May also typically has around 5 days of consistent rain. Later in the month, you will experience more storms and precipitation as hurricane season approaches.

If you or someone in your party is a musician, you all may enjoy the 28th annual Songwriters Festival that is held from May 1st to May 6th, 2024.

The festival will host over 30 performances and 150 performers located throughout Key West. This festival has been accredited with giving many big names their start, including Florida Georgia Line, Maren Morris, and Jake Owen.

Summer Months in Key West

If you plan your trip to Key West during the summertime , you will be blessed with the lowest rates of the year and get to experience the island in its least crowded state. However, it is Key West hurricane season, so be sure to keep an eye on the weather in case any rescheduling is necessary.

It can be extremely humid, so be sure to schedule some beach or pool time on your trip to help you cool off a bit. A lot of the tourism consists of families with children on their summer vacation, so if you are especially adverse to being around children, this might not be the time to visit Key West for you.

The heat and humidity are also very prevalent during these months, and summertime in the Keys is not for the faint of heart.

June begins the hottest portion of the year in Key West. You will typically see an average high temperature of 88℉ and an average low temperature of 80℉. Although, the peak temperatures in the summer seem to be rising every year. There are typically around seven days of consistent rainfall.

Hurricane season has officially begun and it is common to see an afternoon thunderstorm nearly every day. Key West is an accepting place for all, and you will see people from all walks of life celebrating Key West Pride, with festivities from June 5th to June 9th, 2024.

During the Pride Fest , you will have access to a 4-day party consisting of drag shows, wine tastings, theater performances, dance parties, and more. All of that partying can really make you work up an appetite.

If you stay for a couple of more weeks, you can get the pleasure of experiencing the 7th annual Mango Fest held June 27th through June 30th, 2024 to experience all things mango, including culinary delicacies, educational speeches, and an assortment of different demonstrations.

The temperature and humidity continue to rise in July and the month has an average high temperature of 90℉ and an average low temperature of 81℉. There are typically around eight days of rainfall. At this point in the year, you can expect regular afternoon thunderstorms from the higher temperatures. However, it’s very rare that these storms will develop into a hurricane this early in the season.

July is also one of the most humid months of the year, rivaling with August. July also offers some of the warmest water temperatures of the year. The water temperature can get up to 90℉, which is an especially warm water temperature.

This past year the ocean around Key West got higher than 100℉, a startling temperature for the sea. If the heat is getting to you, there’s no shortage of icey cold beverages to cool you off. You can grab a famous Key Lime Colada at Island Dogs Bar.

If you’re a key lime fan and you’d like to learn more about Key West’s most famous fruit, you can visit the Key Lime Festival , held from July 3rd to July 7th, 2024. At this festival, you will find culinary events and intricacies for the whole family, a sip & stroll, pie drop, mini pie making, key lime tree master classes, and even a scavenger hunt.

If you are in town for Fourth of July and are hoping to see some amazing fireworks, the best place to watch them is arguably the White Street Pier. Every year, the fireworks display continues to get better and better.

weird attractions in key west

Key West in August:

August is often the hottest month of the year with an average high at 91℉ and an average low of 81℉ and there are usually at least 10 days of rainfall. The heat and humidity are a doozy this time of year.

This can guarantee you some of the lowest rates and least crowded times of the year in Key West. It is the cheapest time to fly to Key West. Although, the cheapest rates in Key West occur in August, these rates still might not seem very inexpensive for most.

If you are there between August 8th and 11th, you can celebrate the kickoff of lobster season at the Key West Lobsterfest . 2024 will be the 27th annual celebration. The festivities typically include lobster boils, music performances, pool parties, and more.

If you can manage to be outdoors in the heat, you can visit the West Martello Tower, which is home to Key West Garden Club’s Botanical Gardens. It is a Civil War-era fort that was never completed. Construction began in 1863 and ceased in 1873. In 1949, the West Martello Tower ruins were considered an eyesore and many Key West residents wanted it gone.

It offers a fantastic view of the Atlantic Ocean and Higgs Beach, so many wanted to put something there that highlighted the great view. There used to be a huge strangler fig that offered a wide shadow coverage, but it was unfortunately blown over during Hurricane Irma that passed through in 2017. The gardens are usually riddled with butterflies and it is almost guaranteed that you will see some.

After finishing at the West Martello Tower , you can check out the African cemetery located between the tower and the White Street Fishing Pier. In 1860, 294 enslaved Africans were rescued from three slave ships and brought to Key West. Due to the extremely inhumane conditions that they were subjected to, many passed away upon arrival to Key West and were laid to rest here.

Fall in Key West

During these fall months, you will experience a slight temperature drop, however, humidity is still pretty high. The hurricane season becomes more active later in the season, so if you plan a trip during the fall, be sure to keep your eyes on incoming storms that may grow into a hurricane.

Key West is most definitely not the place you want to be during a hurricane, as there is only one road on and off the island, and evacuating can be an arduous and stressful process.

September has an average high temperature of 89℉ and an average low temperature of 80℉. You can expect at least 11 days of rainfall. September and August tend to be the slowest months of the year and will offer you the most quiet vacation away from the rush of tourists.

However, September is also the month that your vacation is most likely to be canceled due to a hurricane. Hurricane Irma came through Key West in September 2017, and it was an especially devastating storm.

If you are a lover of hops, you have to visit the Key West Brewfest. At this beer-filled event, you will get to experience pool parties, bingo, a belly flop contest, beer pairing dinners, and of course a huge selection of beer.

The event is hosted by the local nonprofit, The Rotary Club of Key West, and proceeds from the event are dedicated to local scholarships and the Take Stock in Children program.

key west in september

Once October rolls around, the afternoon thunderstorms become less prevalent. You still have to be wary of incoming storms, because hurricane season runs through November. The last hurricane that hit Key West in October was Hurricane Irene. It made landfall on October 15, 1999, as a Category One intensity hurricane with winds at 104 mph.

The precipitation slows down to an average of 7 rainy days in October. There is an average high temperature of 85℉ and an average low temperature of 78℉.

If you want to enjoy a party on your holiday, you can visit Key West’s Fantasy Fest . A 10-day fun-filled festival that was begun in 1979 by Key West locals to attract more tourists to the then-sleepy island. Festivities for this event include pool parties, group bike rides, drag shows, a theater performance, body painting showcases, tons of music performances, an election of Fantasy Fest King and Queen, and so much more.

If you would like to spend your October holiday with some Halloween Spirit, you can take a haunted pub crawl with Bone Island Haunted Pub Crawl put on by Key West Promotions. Key West was originally named “Cayo Hueso”, which translates to “Bone Island”. The haunted pub crawl costs $24.95 per person and includes a two-hour guided pub crawl packed with ghost stories and a souvenir t-shirt.

For the non-drinkers and those there with their families, there is also a Bone Island Ghost Tour . This 90-minute walking tour includes chilling ghost stories at infamous spots including the Key West Cemetary, Original Key West Morgue, Fort Zachery Taylor, and so many more.

Admission for adults costs $17.95, and admission for children costs $15.95. Private tours are available for groups of 10 people or more and tickets cost $22.95 a person regardless of age. For those looking for more of an athletic challenge on their Key West holiday, they can sign up to run in the Southernmost 5K and 10K. The race begins and ends at the beautiful Higgs Beach in Key West .

ey-west-beaches-higgs-beach

As the temperature around the country begins to decrease, the amount of tourists traveling to Key West increases. This also means that hotel rates will get higher and wait times at restaurants in Key West will get longer. However, the weather is close to perfect, with an average high temperature of 79℉ and an average low temperature of 72℉ and around 3 days of rainfall.

It is the beginning of dry season so the afternoon thunderstorms will slowly come to a stop. Hurricane season ends in November and it is rare that you will have a strong storm that late in the season. The water temperature is around 79℉, so it’s the perfect opportunity for your water and beach festivities.

There is no shortage of activities to fill your time after you’ve arrived. If you and your family visit the island to celebrate a less traditional Thanksgiving Holiday full of sunny skies and a warm breeze, there are plenty of local restaurant gems to fulfill your Thanksgiving Day food cravings.

There is also a free Thanksgiving meal given out at Mallory Square every year to ensure that everyone has a place to be on the holiday. You can attend the event and have some dinner, or also donate or volunteer to help the locals of Key West serve the community.

Composed of hundreds of islands (or keys) that stretch nearly 200 square miles, the Florida Keys is ripe for exploration. But when should you make your tropical journey happen?

Compared to other corners of the United States , the Florida Keys has consistently warm temperatures, with highs rarely dropping below 70 degrees Fahrenheit. While the pleasantness of its climate and the vibrancy of its residents are constants, factors – spanning quirky cultural attractions to the likelihood of weather-related events – will help you nail down your plans. So, let’s find that perfect time for your next trip to the Florida Keys.

Two people at a food stand with signs reading Key Lime Pie

Go November through February to feel the energy and heat

As much of the rest of the country combat cold temperatures, snow or a mix of the two, the Florida Keys remain delightfully sunny. In fact, there's a name for those that opt to hibernate for months on end or own a seasonal residence in South Florida (or other traditionally warm locations): Snowbirds.

During these snowbird-filled months, things feel noticeably busier in some of the bigger towns and popular places to visit (e.g., Key Largo , Islamorada , Tavernier, Marathon and Key West ) – there is a bit more traffic, restaurant waits are longer and the bar scene is, well, just as crazy as it is any other time of year. With a primed climate – high temperatures are typically in the mid- to upper-70s – and a unique tropics-meets-winter holiday charm, it’s no wonder so many opt to hit the Florida Keys this time of year.

Enjoy festivals and parties before the heat arrives from March through May

If you want to sneak in a Florida Keys adventure before the thermostat reads a very humid 90 degrees, this is the time to do it. March through May is optimal for a number of activities: fishing, spring festivals and a wonderful balance of locals and tourists.

Throughout the Florida Keys, you can visibly notice the snowbirds heading back north. But, between raucous St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, the Conch Republic Independence Celebration in Key West and an influx of Spring Breakers, there's plenty to keep folks heading here, too.

Get a bargain travel deal from June through October

Those dreamy waterside resorts and cottages that the Florida Keys are known for certainly aren’t cheap. For those looking for a bargain , the summer to early fall time frame is the time to make it happen. These bargains come with a few asterisks.

It is typically super-humid and hot during the summer months, so you’ll want to pack accordingly. Also, June 1 through November 30 is the Atlantic hurricane season, with September and October typically being the most active. So, you’ll want to keep an extra-close eye on the weather this time of year. But, for many, these caveats are easily worth the extra dough you’ll save.

Enjoy cultural events in January

With divine temperatures and cultural events galore, it’s no wonder so many folks opt to ring in a new year in the Florida Keys.

Key events: Art Under the Oaks (Tavernier), Coconut Crawl (Key Colony Beach), Florida Keys Celtic Festival (Marathon), Florida Keys Seafood Festival (Key West), Key West Food & Wine Festival.

Head to the art festivals in February

Love may be in the air on Valentine’s Day. But, art is in the air throughout the Florida Keys for much of the month, with two of the islands’ biggest annual attractions for art lovers.

Key events: Coral Head Music Fest (Marathon), Old Island Days Art Festival (Key West), Pigeon Key Art Festival (Marathon).

A large brown pelican on a dock

Experience the energy of Spring Break in March

South Florida is a Spring Break hotspot and the Florida Keys are certainly a part of the mix starting in March and running through mid-April. If you’re not a college student, St. Patrick’s Day is always an all-ages spectacle with festivities throughout the islands.

Key events: Islamorada Seafood Festival, Key Colony Beach St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Marathon Seafood Festival, St. Patrick’s Day Bar Stroll (Key West).

Go fishing in April

For fishers, April is one of the best months of the year for snagging a big one. Mahi mahi, tarpon, wahoo, blue marlin and yellowtail are in their prime, so plan for a fishing adventure or two.

Key events: Conch Republic Independence Celebration (Key West), 7 Mile Bridge Run (Knights Key to Pigeon Key ).

May brings the start of the heat

You can feel the spring temperatures slowly starting to shift to summer heat. With this, the snowbirds and masses of tourists that had taken advantage of cooler temps start to taper off.

Key events: Cuban American Heritage Festival (Key West), Key West Songwriters Festival, Queen Mother Festival (Key West).

Cannons under a brick fort hallway

June is the start of hurricane season

The heat is on and so is hurricane season. June through November, you’ll want to keep an eye on weather systems developing in the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico that may affect your trip.

Key events: Florida Keys Guitar Festival (Marathon), Key West Pride Week, Mango Fest (Key West).

July celebrates one very famous pie

A darling of dessert menus everywhere, you can celebrate your love of key lime pie at the Key Lime Festival this month. You’ll want that slice of pie extra cool as the weather is scorching throughout July.

Key events: Hemingway Days Festival (Key West), Key Lime Festival (Key West), Spirit of Islamorada 4th of July Festival, Underwater Music Festival ( Looe Key ).

Get your lobster fix in August

The ocean water is at its hottest in the Florida Keys in August, so dive in. You can celebrate a fellow ocean swimmer – the lobster – at the Key West LobsterFest, too.

Key events: Key West LobsterFest, Kilts in the Keys (Marathon), Tropical Heat (Key West).

An old-fashioned typewriter in an office

Enjoy less crowds in September

Family road trips come to a screeching halt and the islands have a noticeably less family-filled vibe.

Key events: Florida Keys Birding & Wildlife Festival ( Big Pine Key ), Womenfest (Key West), Key West Brew Fest.

Get dressed up for an ultimate Halloween celebration in October

For Halloween fans, if getting creatively bedazzled for just one day isn’t enough, you can dress up and party for 10 consecutive days at Fantasy Fest in Key West. For the Halloween traditionalists, there is plenty to do throughout the islands on the big day and leading up to it.

Key events: Fantasy Fest (Key West), Goombay Festival (Key West), Reef Fest (Key Largo), Zombie Bike Ride of the Living Dead (Big Pine Key).

Enjoy the slower pace and cooler temperature of November

Wedged between Halloween and a holiday-filled December, November feels somewhat quiet. High temperatures hover around a pleasant 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Key events: Key West Film Festival, Taste of the Islands (Marathon).

Best Times To Visit Key West

The best time to visit Key West is between March and May. The winter crowds will taper off, the hotel rates become reasonable and the weather is remarkably similar to winter's blissful 70s and 80s. Speaking of winter – that season is the island's busiest and priciest. The rainy and humid summer months see the fewest tourists but the best hotel rates. The trade-off might be worth it, but you're still gambling against Atlantic hurricane season (June to November). Also, be aware that rates will surge during special events like Fantasy Fest.

November 3, 2022 //  by  Florida Trippers

By the end of this article, you will be able to decide which is the best month to go to Florida and how to plan accordingly. We will talk you through the best weather months in Florida, when the state is least crowded and when it can be cheapest to visit.

Florida is an incredible state with so much to offer from the beautiful Emerald Coast beaches to the swampland of the Everglades to the wonderful vibrant Key West it has something to please every traveler.

Whether you are looking for a romantic Floridian getaway or family-friendly beaches you will want to know when to go to Florida. We have you covered.

So pull up a chair grab and drink and let us walk you through the best time to vacation in Florida.

way to the beach in Key West, Miami in an article about the best time to visit Florida

When is The Best Time To Visit Florida

Deciding when to go to Florida is never easy. As Floridians, we prefer the winter months when it gets a little cooler but traveling in winter is a luxury most don’t have.

I would say the best time to visit Florida depends on a lot of factors such as budget, your tolerance to heat if you have an aversion to crowds, and of course if your vacation time is dictated by school holidays. All these factors come into play when you are choosing the best time of year to go to Florida.

It is also dependent on where you want to go in Florida as the average temperatures and conditions can change considerably from the Panhandle beaches in the north to the Key West beaches in the south. The temperature difference can be as much as 5 -10 degrees Fahnenhieght.

Most agree the best time to go to Florida is between March and April or September and October. This is when the weather is great and not too hot, it tends to be less crowded and is often cheaper. However, this is also when children are in school so most can’t travel then.

As a guide, April and November tend to have the lowest rainfall, and May and October have the combination of warmth and low rainfall. May tends to be the best month for beach holidays and October/November tends to be less crowded times in Orlando.

When you are thinking of when to go to Florida also keep in mind where you are going. Central Florida tends to be less crowded and has more tolerable weather from January to April. South Florida tends to be the best in the winter months, and Northern Florida is a great place to visit in the summer as the heat is less intense.

If you are thinking of Visiting The Florida Keys our article on the best time to visit the Key West might be helpful.

Worst Time To Go To Florida

Personally, we don’t think there is a bad time to go to Florida. As long as you plan, know what to expect, and aren’t going at a time where the conditions are hard for you to tolerate you will have a great time.

However not all months are equal, so here are our thoughts on the worst time to go to Florida.

If you find heat and humidity intolerable then July and August are the months for you to avoid. As a Floridian resident, I find these months just far too hot and tend to favor staying indoors.

June tends to be the highest rainfall month followed by July and September, so if you are after a beach holiday these months may not be great.

Hurricane season runs from June until November and while hurricanes hitting the coast are rare recent events have shown the real danger. Chances of hurricanes tend to be more prevalent in late summer to early fall.

As for crowds, it is very dependent on where you are going, however, any time the children are on vacation, there is a national holiday or a specific event like Pride in Key West attractions can get packed.

Also, keep in mind that during the Florida off-season some attractions may not be open or running at a lower capacity with areas closed so check before you go to avoid disappointment.

When it comes to the worst time to go to Florida it really is what is worse for you in your situation.

What Is The Cheapest Month To Travel To Florida?

The cheapest month to go to Florida can vary based on where you are going in Florida and where you are traveling from. It’s often cheaper for us as Floridians to travel in the summer months however if you are traveling from the U.K. for example summer is the most expensive.

The high season in Florida is considered May to June and consequently, this is when prices can be higher. As for flights the cheaper months tend to be January, September, and May but any time outside of school and national holidays will see cheaper fares. Cheap flights for those in the USA can also be found in late August after the children have gone back to school.

Early September to Thanksgiving can see cheaper theme park tickets (minus Halloween festivities). And early February to May (minus Easter) can see prices lower.

For great hotel deals, September to Thanksgiving and mid-March to mid-June tend to be great. Obviously minus the school holiday periods.

To save money also think about the destination. For example, staying at New Smyrna Beach rather than Daytona will save you money, and staying at Marathon rather than Key West making your money go further. Panama City Beach will be less expensive than the Destin beaches and deals can be found at some of the lesser-known beach destinations like Jenson.

The cheapest time to visit Florida depends on so many things but there is always a deal to find and if you can travel during the off-season in Florida you will always bag a bargain.

What Is Rainy Season In Florida?

Florida gets the majority of its rainfall during certain months which are known as the rainy season. The rainy season tends to run from the middle of May to the middle of October although this can change slightly depending on where you are in Florida.

During these months brief intense showers fall almost every day normally mid to late afternoon. Florida rain tends to be different from the rain most are used to. The showers are heavy and very brief but you can get soaked. The rest of the time it is hot with bright sunshine and often these showers are a welcome relief.

The Hurricane season runs from June to November with the biggest risk between September and October.

What Month Is The Best Weather In Florida?

The best time to visit Florida based on the weather is a hard question to answer as we each have our preferred weather. Florida has a humid subtropical climate which means the summers are very hot and sticky and the winters are drier and sunny.

For us personally, we prefer the weather from October through April, this is when the heat tends to calm down and there is less rainfall.

The hottest month tends to be July where the average temperature is a high of 34 C 93 F and a low of 24 C 75 F. The coldest month is in January with an average high of 22 C 71 F and a low of 11 C 51 F. However, these temperatures can differ a lot from the northern Panhandle to the southern Keys.

In terms of rainfall, June is the highest and December the lowest.

Most tend to agree the best weather months in Florida tend to be between October and May.

High And Low Season For Florida

As a rule of thumb high season in Florida tends to be when the schools are on holiday and there are national US holidays. November through April is also considered peak season as this is when tourist flock to the south to experience the best weather in the USA.

Low season in Florida tends to run from May to October missing out on school holidays where it can be busy. Outside of the school holidays during the off-season at Florida, you will be able to find hotel deals.

However, this all comes with a caveat as it depends on where you are going in Florida. South Florida beaches are packed during spring breaks, the northern beaches are packed during summer. Theme parks tend to be the busiest during the summer school holidays and Key West is popular in December .

February and September tend to be great months to visit and accommodation prices can drop up to 50%.

best time to visit Key West

Table of Contents

Key West, Florida brings a slice of Caribbean vibes into Florida’s borders and offers a ton of fun the whole family can enjoy. But if you have your eye on the “Conch Republic” for your next family vacation, figuring out the best time to visit Key West  can be a little tricky.

Key West—the final island in Florida Keys—lies off the tip of Florida and is the southernmost point of the continental United States. It is connected to the mainland via the Overseas Highway, a series of stunning causeways that carry U.S. Route 1 over electric blue water and into the islands.

Key West is only 90 miles from Cuba – but even that 90 miles gives Key West more seasonal variation than the average Caribbean island. You’ll have to pay close attention to Key West weather when booking plane tickets.

Also, because Key West primarily attracts American tourists, prices rise and fall dramatically based on peak travel seasons.

All of this means you’ll want to time your trip carefully.

Fortunately, we’ve done the legwork and taken these factors into account in evaluating the best time to go to Key West and the other Florida Keys.

Keep reading for the details, and to learn what to expect month-by-month when visiting the Florida Keys with your kids – and why we think it’s a great option for a family trip.

Mango Tree Bottom Line

The best time to visit Key West, Florida is from March to May, during the springtime shoulder season. Great weather, slightly more reasonable prices than winter months, and fewer crowds—but no hurricanes—all align to set the stage for a delightful family vacation.

Overview: when is the best time to visit key west.

Key West is the most recognizable of the hundreds of islands in the Florida Keys .  It’s the end point for most road trips through the island chain, and a top family destination.  But when to do? In evaluating the best time to go to Key West, we considered:

  • Hotel availability and rental prices
  • Key West weather, including hurricane season
  • Seasonal events and festivals
  • Potential crowds and
  • Activities available for families

So how did we land on March to May as the best months to visit Key West? Here’s the calculus.

While you can certainly enjoy Key West year-round, the winter and summer seasons have some drawbacks.

Wintertime is peak season. From late December through February, accommodations are as costly as they get. Plus, the Keys can get quite cool in December and January, with temperatures dipping into the 60s.

The practical effect of the cool Key West weather? It may be too cold to really enjoy swimming in the ocean or unheated pools.

On the flip side, there are plenty of festivals and events throughout the winter, all taking advantage of the crowds who have made their way south for warmer weather. See below for some examples.

The summer season offers the cheapest hotel prices.  But with kids out of school and headed to the beach, you may find crowds at family-friendly hotels.  Temperatures will be hot and muggy in July and August, with Florida’s rainy season in full swing.

Hurricane season in the Caribbean—including Key West—runs from June to November.  While we’re fans of Caribbean off-season travel, even during fall months like October, you should expect plenty of afternoon showers this time of year.  You also face heightened risk of having your trip disrupted by a major storm.

That leaves the sweet spot: March to May, the best time of year to visit Key West .

In late March, you’ll get Key West at its best weather. Tourist season is still going strong, especially during spring break weeks, but hotel prices start to drop from the end of February into March.

And as you head into April and May, those prices decrease even further — while the weather keeps getting warmer and better!  That’s the best time to grab a car at the Miami airport, and head south through the Florida Keys.

Where To Stay In Key West With Kids

Key West may not scream “kid-friendly destination” on first glance, but a drive through the Keys, culminating with a few days in Key West, is a road trip every family should take.

Once you arrive at the end of the United States, there are lots of family-friendly hotels to choos from!

Our full hotel profiles are coming soon, but we’ve got an eye on these kid-friendly properties:

For a private island choice, book luxury stay at  Sunset Key Cottages , or a spacious unit at  Parrot Key Hotel & Villas . Both properties sit on private keys just a short boat ride from Key West. You’ll have easy access to the energy of Duval Street but a quiet place to retreat with the kids.

To stay right downtown, walking distance from art galleries, restaurants, live music, and more, the  Santa Maria Suites  offer families condo-style units with multiple bedrooms and a cozy courtyard pool for unwinding at the end of the day.   Havana Cubana  also has a great pool.

If you’re driving south, and love a marina view, the 100-room  Perry Hotel and Marina  just outside Key West on Stock Island is another great choice. With three restaurants, live music nightly, two waterfront pools, and  firepits, it’s a destination in its own right, but offers easy access to Key West, with just a 15-20 minute drive into town.

Key West By Month

We’ve given you our logic for the ideal time to visit the Florida Keys. But maybe you want to head there a different time of year, or perhaps have limited flexibility.

Let’s walk through a month-by-month breakdown of weather, prices, crowds, and events in Key West so you’ll know exactly what to expect whenever you decide to go!

Key West in January

January closes out the winter season in Key West. This is the coldest month on the island – the average temps range from a high of 74 degrees to a low of 64 degrees.

If you are traveling to the Florida Keys in January with kids, know that it may be too cold to enjoy the ocean or unheated pools during the winter months. If you and your kids want to enjoy swimming, look for a heated pool when visiting Key West in January.

Despite the cool weather, January is still the height of peak season for Keys tourists, as the rest of the continental US is far colder. This means accommodation prices are about the highest they get.

But on the bright side, the island is buzzing with holiday fun and annual festivals in January, including:

  • The Southernmost Regatta
  • Key West Literary Seminar
  • Key West Food & Wine Festival
  • The Florida Keys Seafood Festival

Key West in February

Peak tourist season remains in full swing in February, with hotel rates peaking to match. For prices, this may be the worst time to visit Key West.

That said, Key West weather in February is pleasant, with mild temperatures averaging from a high of 76 degrees to a low of 66 degrees. This is also the island’s driest month of the year, with plenty of sunshine and very little rain.

Just like in January, if swimming is at the top of your family itinerary, consider finding accommodations with a heated pool. At 72 degrees, the ocean will be too chilly for anyone not looking for a heart-stopping cold plunge—but there’s so much to see in the Keys beyond the ocean that you can still have a great time.

best time to visit Key West

Key West in March

And now we’re getting into the best time to visit Key West, especially later in March. Average temperatures float around a high of 78 degrees and a low of 68, with low humidity and sunny days.

In Key West in March, you can break out your favorite swimsuit , load your best beach bag with cold drinks, and settle into a proper beach vacation.

There are also minimal threats of hurricanes or other harsh tropical storms in spring.

March is right on the edge of peak tourist season in Key West, marking the start of the spring shoulder season. Prices start to come down as the snowbird crowds slowly disperse. That said, you won’t get rock bottom prices this month: Between school spring breaks and clear blue skies, you’ll still pay a premium for Key West’s best weather.

Key West in April

Key West is beautiful in April, with warm weather that’s ideal for beach lounging and swimming. Temperatures range from a high of 81 degrees to a low of 72, and humidity is as low as it gets. The crowds continue to get lighter, while prices continue to creep down.  This might be the perfect time to visit the Florida Keys.

April is also one of the best times to visit the Florida Keys for fun annual events and festivals. Join in the yearly Key West independence festivities at the Conch Republic Independence Celebration , or dance and experience Afro-Caribbean culture at the Afro Roots World Festival .

Key West in May

May is also a great shoulder month in Key West. Temperatures hit their tropical stride, with an average high of 85 degrees and a low of 76 degrees. The warmth, sun, and clear skies are ideal for those who like watersports and beach fun, and some would say May is the best time to travel to Key West.  If you head to Key West in May, you’ll sneak in right before hurricane season and Florida’s rainy season.

May is perhaps the best time to visit the Florida Keys if you want to go  snorkeling with kids , as the ocean feels warm, yet still refreshing. Fans of music will also enjoy the week-long Key West Songwriters Festival , the largest of its kind in the world.

Key West in July

Key West in June

June is the start of low season in Key West, which means hotel and resort prices will see a big drop. It’s one of the most affordable months to visit Key West – making it one of the best times to visit the keys for budget-minded families.

By June, summer has arrived and Key West’s weather is no longer ideal, with temperatures creeping up to an average high of 88 degrees and a low of 79. Humidity is quite high, and the island’s rainy season is well underway.

There will still be plenty of sunny days, however, and Key West Pride is an exciting festival taking place this month. June also is arguably the best month to visit  Dry Tortugas National Park , just off the cost of Key West.

If you don’t mind humidity and afternoon showers, consider a trip to Key West with your kids at the beginning of their school break.

Key West in July

Temperatures continue to climb in July, with an average high of 90 degrees and a low of 81. July is one of the hottest, rainiest, and muggiest months in Florida, and the Florida keys are no exception.

While the weather may not be as enjoyable, July is perhaps the cheapest time to go to Key West. Whatever family beach resort  you’ve had your eye on, it is a great chance to snag a room without the usual sticker shock. It will also be quite easy to book popular tours for your family.

Ernest Hemingway is among the most notable of Key West’s famous former residents. If your high schoolers are enjoying (or suffering through…) The Old Man and The Sea, then the Hemingway Days  Festival  may help bring the novels to life.

We spent July 4th in Key West a few years back, and while we remember the energy of Duval Street, we don’t remember rain interfering. So don’t write off the option of a July trip to the Keys.

What better way to kick-off summer than with the 4th of July Weekend Key Lime Festival ? If you’re super into Key Lime pie, this festival alone might make July your  best time to visit the Florida Keys.

Key West in July

Key West in August

August is the hottest month in Key West, with average temperatures ranging from an average high of 91 to a low of 81 degrees. The humidity is also quite high, with plenty of rainfall.  For those sensitivy to humidity and weary of rain, August is probably the worst time to visit Key West.

That said, as a general rule, we don’t shy away from off-season Caribbean travel here at Mango Travel. Despite the risk of rain and the high humidity, we love exploring our favorite destinations in the quieter summer months.

If you’re traveling on a budget and want to avoid droves of crowds, long lines, and restaurant waits, August is your best bet. Enjoy spacious, care-free beach days with your toddlers , cheap accommodations, and easy access to Duval Street nightlife.  No reason to let afternoon showers scare you away.

One exception to these low-key August weeks may be Key West Lobsterfest , where the island kicks off lobster season with a massive party, which draws more crowds.

Protect Your Trip To Key West!

Do not let the rainy season scare you away from Caribbean travel! There’s no reason to shy away from Caribbean travel during the rainy season (July to November). Even if you see storms in the forecast, we’re typically just talking about afternoon rain showers—-a great time for a nap.

That said, approach your trip with eyes wide open — and with a safety net. Caribbean travel during hurricane season (July to November) always comes with the risk of tropical storms.

This is the most important time of the year to buy travel insurance, in case your trip gets impacted by a storm and you need to pivot and change destinations or dates.

We recommend that you get a travel insurance quote from  IMG global . On top of having comprehensive medical, cancellation, and luggage protection, the hurricane protection that comes with the Travel SE plan is better than most. If NOAA issues a hurricane warning or watch for your destination 24-72 hours before departure, trip cancellation benefits kick-in (read the fine print for all plan details, of course).

Key West in September

Key West weather in September is still quite rainy and humid. Temperatures begin to fall, but not by much, with an average high of 89 degrees and a low of 79. The island is still relatively crowd-free – the kids are back in school, after all — and hotel prices are reasonable. While Key West in September is quieter than peak months, it still marks the annual  Key West Brewfest .

Key West in October

October is the start of the fall shoulder season in Key West. Storms abate and rain is less frequent, while temperatures begin to offer a little relief from the summer heat, averaging from a high of 85 degrees to a low of 76.

More visitors are returning to the island now that hurricane season is on the way out. If your kids have a school fall break, Key West may make a great destination for a quick October getaway.

That said, the island’s adult energy starts to come alive in October, as electric events like Fantasy Fest  kick off. This racy festival is probably too much for young kids, so don’t let it surprise you!

Key West in November

Key West in November

November is another good month to take advantage of shoulder season. As for Florida Keys weather in November, average temperatures float somewhere between a near-perfect 79 and 72 degrees.

Hurricane season isn’t technically over, though. That’s why November falls just short of being one of the top months for a visit to the Florida Keys. You may still get some storms, and a late-season hurricane could blow through.

The tradeoff is getting to avoid the large December and January crowds.  And prices are still reasonable before peak season hits. Get a babysitter and take in a show at the Key West Film Festival .

Key West in December

The weather in Key West is quite idyllic in December, with temps ranging from 77 to 70 degrees, and clear, sunny skies. Because December is the start of peak season, there are plenty of local events to enjoy.

By the end of December, though, temperatures start to drop, so we’ll repeat our reminder here to prioritize heated pools if you’re headed to Key West over the holidays. Don’t be surprised by the Florida Keys weather in December.  If you’re heading to the Keys expecting it to be hot every day, this would be one of your worst times to visit the Key West.

With endless activities (including family-friendly favorites like the Lighted Boat Parade ) and perfect lounging weather (if not swimming), it’s no surprise that many others have caught on too.

Hotel prices reflect that December is a busy, popular month—especially during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Best and Worst Times to Visit Florida

The best time to visit Florida depends on where you want to go and what you want to do.

Say the word “Florida” to someone from Europe, Canada, or the northern states of the U.S., and they are likely to picture hot weather, clear skies and wide, sandy beaches.

That’s what most visitors want when they go to Florida for vacation or take a cruise from one of the busy Florida ports. But that’s not always what they get.

For example, if you want to hit the beaches in the northern part of the state, you should avoid traveling during the winter, when water temperatures are cool. But if you want to go to Magic Kingdom in Orlando, winter is good beause you avoid the intense heat and humidity of the summer months.

Quick Tips on Best and Worst Times

Worst times.

The risk of tropical storms (and even an occasional hurricane) is also highest during the late summer and fall because of the annual Caribbean hurricane season .

The arrival of Hurricane Dorian on the Florida coast in August 2019 is an example of the risk that comes with going to Florida during hurricane season.

Florida’s official rainy season runs from May 15th through October 15th, during which time the state usually receives about 70% of its yearly rainfall.

Florida has a hurricane season because the Caribbean has a hurricane season. Florida’s season starts and ends six months earlier than the Caribbean. The Caribbean season officially runs from June 1st to November 30th every year.

Bad weather usually forms in the eastern Atlantic and moves west. Sometimes that bad weather evolves into a tropical storm and may grow with intensity into a hurricane. These weather patterns also tend to travel in an arc that heads toward the Caribbean and then turns up along the U.S. coast. Sometimes the arc has little impact on the U.S. and other times it does.

In recent years, Florida has had few hurricanes hitting landfall or even coming close. But over the last 30 years, the state has the highest average rainfall from June through September because the impact of these tropical storms and hurricanes can spread over a wide area.

Worst Time to Visit Disney World in Orlando

This writer still remembers standing in a two-hour line waiting for a ride at Disney World in Orlando during the summer. A child sat on his shoulders. The temperature was above 90, not a cloud dotted the sky and the humidity was high. Sweat poured off every inch. It was a miserable day, followed by three more of the same.

The reality is that many families vacation in Florida during the summer (especially in Orlando) because kids are out of school. But in my opinion, it is the worst time to visit Disney World because of hot and humid weather, and should be avoided if at all possible.

Best Time to Visit Florida’s Beaches

The best time to go to most beach destinations in Florida for warm weather is May through September.

But keep in mind that a mix of heat and humidity will be at its worst from June through August—the same months with the highest average rainfall. Without a doubt, the month with the best combination of warm weather and low rain for beachgoers is May.

A recent visit to Fort Myers Beach in August had hot and humid weather —- sometimes with the heat index nearing 100 degrees Fahrenheit —- except for thunderstorms that passed by every afternoon without fail. (The heaviest rainfall of the year usually occurs from June through August, according to 30 years of data from the National Weather Service.)

They came from the east, the remnants of Tropical Storm Cristobal. It was tolerable because we were on a beach and not in the much hotter and more humid interior part of the state, but it certainly wasn’t ideal.

The busiest months in Florida are February and March, with January following closely behind. June and July are also quite busy. Flights and accommodation will be most expensive during these months.

If you want to avoid the tourist crowds (and the inflated tourist prices), November is the calmest month, followed by September and October.

Because Orlando is in the interior of the state, it has even higher temperatures during the summer than the coastal destinations. The best time to go to Orlando is November through May because of lower chances of rain and of course comfortable temperatures for standing in line for rides.

Florida Weather Tips By Season

Florida weather in summer.

Nothing from stifling temps to hurricane-worthy downpours can stop hordes of tourists from visiting Florida during the summer, the most popular time of the year to visit. The summer months are popular because of families with children out of school. (Adults without children will find that the ideal combination of temperatures in the mid- to upper-80s plus lower chances of rain usually takes place in April and May.)

Weather in the Fall

The period of September through November shows a common pattern for almost every location in the state —- more rain in September and then less rain for the rest of the fall season.

The east coast of Florida sees continued high rainfall, especially Miami and West Palm Beach, because September is the worst month of the year for the Caribbean hurricane season. As a result, the east coast is susceptible to bad remnant weather.

Average temperatures drop about 10 degrees over the three-month period. A glance at each of the climate charts in this article will show that October is a good month to visit Florida because of a combination of lower rainfall and comfortable daytime temperatures.

Rainfall is even lower in November, but temperatures drop another five degrees or so, meaning ocean swimming will be uncomfortable at best.

Weather in Winter

Winter is the worst time to go to Florida beaches and among the best times to go to Orlando for Disney World and Universal Studios. Northern destinations like Jacksonville see average daytime high temperatures in the 60s Fahrenheit, while destinations as far south as Key West see daytime temperatures in the mid-70s.

In winter, no Florida destination is likely to have weather warm enough for sunning on beaches, let alone for swimming.

But winter also is one of the best times of the year; with the least rain, it is ideal for land activities such as visiting theme parks, golfing and other recreational sports. During the winter, avoid northern locations such as Jacksonville and Daytona and instead focus on the southern locations—Miami, Tampa and the Florida Keys. But don’t expect Caribbean-like temperatures.

Weather in Spring

The same could be said about rain in the spring, except for the fact that it stays low only during March, climbs in April and climbs again in May. Likewise, temperatures get warmer in March and climb for the next two months. March remains too cool for sunbathing and swimming on most days, while April and May do better.

It’s worth pointing out that rainfall is still moderate for most places in May except for Miami and West Palm Beach, both of which see a slightly higher jump. Virtually every major destination in Florida sees average high temperatures rising into the 80s Fahrenheit during May.

Keep in mind that nighttime temperatures still average in the 60s during this time, which will make ocean waters cool in the mornings until the afternoon sun heats them back up.

Key West Unveiled: Peak Seasons for Sun, Fun, & Fests

Imagine a place where the sun kisses the ocean and the festivities never end. Welcome to Key West, your ultimate guide to timing the perfect sun-soaked, fun-packed getaway awaits!

worst time to visit florida keys

Key West is the southernmost island of the United States, located 7 miles off the coast of Florida. For decades the only way to reach the Keys was by boat, so they were secluded from the rest of the states.

This seclusion changed in 1911 with the  construction of the Seven Mile Bridge  to connect the lower Keys to Florida's mainland. When the bridge opened up, so did the island's famed tourism.

Between March and May is the best time to visit Key West. This is due to the consistent 70 to 85-degree weather (Fahrenheit). Springtime boasts fewer crowds and lower-cost accommodations. It is perfect for water activities, festivals, and other outdoor exploration opportunities. For cooler weather, visit Key West between December and February for 65 to 75-degree days.

There is no wrong time to visit Key West. Certain months have their draws and setbacks. Yet whenever you visit, you will find yourself immersed in the stunning island life of the Florida Keys. Key West is home to a host of annual events. Beyond the weather and water temperatures, plan your vacation around the island festivities.

What is the Worst Time to Visit Key West?

Unfortunately, Key West experiences the brunt of the Caribbean hurricane season. If you plan a trip far in advance, it is ill-advised to go from August to October. If you do, be sure to purchase good trip insurance.

These early autumn months can also have gorgeous weather and low crowds if you can dodge a storm. Plan cautiously to avoid a cyclone ruining the fun.

What is the Cheapest Time to Visit Key West?

worst time to visit florida keys

Due to fear of storms hindering a trip and a high heat index, September through November is the cheapest time to visit Key West.

This dodges the summer and winter vacation seasons, so rates (and crowds) tend to be low. If you can deal with the potential of a storm, visit in the fall for a cheap time with limited tourists crowding the island.

Airplane tickets are also much cheaper during this time, especially if you buy them early enough. Try to buy your tickets to Key West as early as May if you plan to visit in September. You can find tickets to Key West in September, October, and November for $170 or lower, depending on when you buy.

Worst Time to Visit Key West Florida Conclusion

Deciding the worst time to visit Key West ultimately depends on your individual preferences, tolerance for hot weather, and your willingness to potentially deal with hurricane season. While summer offers a vibrant, lively atmosphere and more affordable accommodation rates, it also comes with high heat and humidity, as well as the threat of tropical storms. On the other hand, the winter and spring seasons bring more temperate weather and a range of cultural events and festivals, but with higher crowds and prices.

For water enthusiasts, the warm waters year-round make any season a good time for water activities, with some particularly good fishing opportunities during the hotter months. Just remember, regardless of when you choose to visit, Key West’s charming vibe, historic sites, and stunning natural beauty are constants.

Always keep in mind to watch the weather forecasts leading up to your trip, especially if you’re planning to visit during hurricane season. By staying informed and flexible, you can ensure that your Key West vacation is memorable for all the right reasons. And regardless of the season, the welcoming and laid-back atmosphere of Key West is sure to provide a rewarding getaway. Safe travels!

The Best Time to Visit Florida for Fewer Crowds, Better Weather, and Travel Deals

Whether you want to lounge on the beach, hit the theme parks, or explore the Sunshine State's cities and small towns, these are the best times to visit Florida.

worst time to visit florida keys

Aside from beaches, theme parks, and nonstop sunshine, one of Florida's biggest draws is that there's never a bad time to visit. The weather is warm all year round, so you'll never have your plans dashed by a snowstorm or need to pack a winter coat.

Florida does, however, have weather concerns of other types, from blazingly hot summers to the dreaded hurricane season. There are also crowds to account for, as well as fluctuating prices on travel essentials like hotels and flights. The tourist seasons in Florida vary by destination, but in general, North Florida's popularity peaks in summer and tapers off in winter, while South Florida hits its peak in winter and is less popular during the summer months. Throughout the state, the fall and late spring (once spring break ends) are typically known as shoulder seasons.

The best time to visit Florida depends on your specific needs — the purpose of your trip, plus your itinerary, budget, and more — but the bottom line is that the Florida vacation of your dreams is within reach, as long as you plan accordingly.

Best Times to Visit Florida for Smaller Crowds

Avoiding the crowds in Florida is a tall order. It's a desirable place to be, and visitors flock to the state all year round. However, some months are quieter than others. In South Florida, for example, high temperatures and storm risk make the summer months the least busy. At Orlando's theme parks and many of the state's best beaches , though, you'll find thousands of families out and about in the summer. For these family-friendly destinations, a visit when school is in session will likely offer the smallest crowds.

You may not be able to avoid all other tourists on your visit to Florida, but you can do yourself a favor by traveling outside the peak periods. Panama City Beach at spring break, the Florida Keys during lobster-hunting "mini season," and St. Augustine around Christmastime are all hyper-popular itineraries that the crowd-averse may want to skip.

Visitors can also find thinner crowds at any time by visiting under-the-radar destinations instead of the state's well-known spots. Swapping the Everglades for a state park or South Beach for Santa Rosa Island can help you enjoy Florida's famous sun and sights with plenty of elbow room.

Best Times to Visit Florida for Good Weather

Sunny skies and warm weather are two of the main factors that draw tourists to Florida, and no matter when you visit, you're likely to find at least a bit of each. Conditions do vary, though, depending on the time of year and the destination. In Florida's subtropical south, winter — roughly November to April — offers the best weather, with temperatures generally topping out at around 80 degrees. Further north, spring and fall can be the nicest seasons. (In the Panhandle's Walton County , for instance, temperatures in these months tend to hover in the 70s, making for pleasant conditions on land and in the water.)

Florida's summers, on the other hand, are notoriously hot — especially inland, where there's no sea breeze to keep things cool(ish). Most of the state sees both high temperatures and high humidity at this time of year, and with even ocean temperatures passing 90 degrees in recent summers, there's no guarantee that a swim will cool you down. Summer also overlaps with Atlantic hurricane season, which stretches from June to November, and it's known for near-daily pop-up storms, too. If you do choose to visit Florida in the summer, be sure to pack both an umbrella and plenty of sunscreen and drinking water.

Best Times to Visit Florida for Lower Prices

The best time to visit Florida for travel deals and lower prices depends on your destination. If you're heading to the beaches or theme parks, summer is a peak season and you might be hard pressed to find available rooms, much less a good deal.

But some places in Florida simmer down during the summer months. Take Palm Beach , for example: The island is booming from November through April, but during off season (May through October, when the snowbirds head home and the social set jets to the Hamptons), you'll find a glimmer of the quiet town it once was. This is also when nightly hotel rates are usually slashed to a fraction of their extravagant high-season prices.

The cheapest months to fly to Florida are typically May (except for Memorial Day weekend) and September. You can score great deals if you plan ahead and aim for just outside your destination's peak season.

Best Times to Visit Miami

What fun-loving person can resist a visit to Miami ? The Magic City is buzzy, sultry, and unapologetically vibrant. Go in the spring to find fewer crowds, more pleasant temperatures, and plenty of events (like Ultra Music Festival and Formula 1's Miami Grand Prix ), or plan a summer trip if you want to experience Miami at its least crowded — and, yes, sizzle on South Beach like a fresh-cooked tostón.

Winter is a fabulous time to visit Miami — temperatures are mild and humidity is lower — but lots of other people think so, too, so you'll have crowds and peak hotel pricing to contend with. Still, it's arguably worth it to attend Art Basel or a Miami Heat game.

If you like living the high life, we'll let you in on an insider secret: Despite its sweltering weather, August is arguably the best month to visit Miami. August is the only time when Miami's Spa Months , Restaurant Months , and Hotel Months all overlap, so you can treat yourself to the city's best dining, lodging, and pampering at a fraction of the usual cost.

Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys

The Florida Keys are one of the best places to visit in Florida, a subtropical delight with nice weather year round. But beware of peak tourist season, which begins right after Christmas and lasts until about May. It's beautiful this time of year — there's very little rain, and temperatures are usually in the 70s — but that pleasant environment comes with high prices and large crowds.

Those crowds and prices taper off from May through September, and temperatures typically remain manageable, with summer highs of around 90 degrees. Hurricane season, though, can put a damper on an off-season visit — storms are most common in the Keys in August, September, and October. That said, if you're willing to accept some storm risk and humidity, summer can yield excellent deals.

For extra fun in the Keys, plan your visit to coincide with a festival like the Original Marathon Seafood Festival (March), the 7 Mile Bridge Run (April), the Key Lime Festival (June/July), Hemingway Days (July), the Key West Brewfest (September), or Fantasy Fest (October).

Best Times to Visit Florida's Theme Parks

Summer is the off-season for most of Florida, due to the extra-hot weather and potential for storms, but beach towns and theme parks are the exception to the rule.

Disney World is a popular destination year round; there's nary a day when you won't encounter crowds and long lines at this beloved resort. But if you want a month that's slightly less crowded than the others, try January (after the holiday rush), February, or September (when kids are back in school and Halloween festivities haven't quite kicked off).

It may be convenient for families, but visiting the theme parks during summer break guarantees super-long lines in super-hot weather. Visiting around any holiday is fun thanks to seasonal park decor, but it also means dense crowds — you're not the only one who'll be clamoring for a taste of the holiday spirit. Once Christmas and New Year crowds dissipate, though, a Goldilocks window begins, since winter is the best time to visit Disney World for good weather.

Worst Times to Visit Florida

The Sunshine State contains such a wide variety of destinations that it's almost impossible to declare one season as Florida's worst. But, unless you're a party-hopping college student, there is one time that you'll likely want to avoid: spring break.

A whopping 7.3 million travelers passed through the Orlando airport during the 2023 spring break season — that's early March through the middle of April — and countless more arrive in the state each spring through other airports and by car. Florida boasts beautiful weather in the springtime, and many families, of course, have no option but to travel when their school schedules allow. If you are flexible, though, choosing a different window will likely help you save money and avoid wall-to-wall crowds.

Summer is a risky time to visit, since the weather tends to be muggy at best. Traveling during this off-season can net you good deals, but you'll want to come prepared for the heat and the storms that a Florida summer can bring.

Panoramic picture of Sandspur Beach on Florida Keys

Few places are as special as this chain of islands that dips down from Miami leading to Key West, the U.S.’s southernmost point. While Hemmingway’s House is a delight and there is some good music on the island, Key West itself is a little too touristy for my taste. I like islands that are a little more discreet and less noisy.

IslaMorada, Florida keys beach scene

Isla Morada is practically perfect. It is fairly easy to get to from Miami: two-plus hours depending on where you leave from and the traffic. It also feels like a world away: where time slows down and you meld into in the water-bedecked landscape and finally really feel the sand crunch beneath your feet.

I was lucky enough to stay at Casa Morada , a lovingly renovated old 1950s motel, where every room is different and you can pass hours by the pool near a well-stocked bar. The hotel’s mascot is very friendly, and quite large, cat of the same name. The hotel also does sunset—and pizza and Champagne—cruises in a 1917 ship called the Blue Mist which has been renovated so a couple could live on board and is gorgeous delight to take out for a few hours.

This boat is stellar.

We had a recent chat about what is so special about this sliver of islands in South Florida. All responses have been edited and condensed for clarity.

A Deep Dive Into the Keys

Liza B. Zimmerman (L.B.Z.): What is so special about the Keys?

Oneil Khosa heads up the Enthusiast Hotel Collection.

Oneil Khosa (O.K.): Looking for the fountain of youth, Ponce de Leon found Key West in 1521. Before the overseas railroad, most visitors arrived in Key West by water. The islands’ 110 miles of land is connected through 42, which makes the area one of the most unique motorways on the planet.

The area’s longest bridge Seven Mile Bridge, is 35,716 feet long and the shortest Harris Gap Bridge, is only 37 feet in length. The Florida Keys—and the state in general—have the most sea turtle nests in the U.S. and are better known for fishing, diving, general marine activities than beaches.

L.B.Z.: Why is it, for you, such a magical escape?

O.K.: Gorgeous weather, inspiring nature, turquoise waters and plenty of bars. President Harry Truman wrote in his winter White House: “I’ve a notion to move the capital to Key West and just stay.” Some of the greatest novels and poetry were written in Key West by famous residents such as Tennessee Williams, Ernest Hemingway and Judy Blume, to name a few. Even though the islands are close to Miami, you feel you are not in Florida or even in the United States but in the Maldives or Tahiti.

L.B.Z.: How are these islands unique and different from all others?

A shot of the resort at sunset.

O.K.: Thanks to the only living coral reef in the continental U.S., the marine environments of the Keys teem with tropical fish, sea turtles, rays and other marine life. Both snorkeling and scuba diving allow you to encounter these aquatic wonders up close

Despite being just a few hours from Miami, the archipelago feels a million miles away with powder-white sands, wispy palm trees and lively bars and restaurants where the parties go on long after the sun goes down. The Keys’ economy is very centered on the hospitality industry, tourism and servicing those who need to—or want to—be in or on the water. So, the demographic in general adds to the vibe and the area's outlook.

L.B.Z.: How is the vibe, and culture here, different from Miami and Southern Florida?

Key West, FL, USA – May 24, 2014: People enjoying drinks at a cafe outdoors

O.K.: The keys are more laid back and simplicity is the norm: think of Bahamas and Barbados. The focus is less on looks, and much more on letting loose and enjoying life. The evening’s festivities begin at sunset. The Keys’ culture is also largely defined by the local inhabitants who are largely focused on hospitality and water-related activities and experiences: musicians, artists, art galleries and events.

The view from one of the rooms.

They are supported by an idealistic population that's not rushing to start the day at 7 am all adds to the vibe and culture of the area. The entire population of the Keys is around 75,000—spread out over 100+ miles—which clearly creates a different culture and vibe compared to Miami and Southeast Florida where the population is around six million within in a 150-mile radius.

As a newly minted local, I can also add that traffic is not bad heading to the Keys once you make it out of the maze of one ways that makes up Miami on good, and bad, days.

WEATHER ALERT

A rip current statement in effect for Coastal Broward and Coastal Miami Dade Regions

Still no smoking gun as bizarre fish behavior spreads in florida keys.

Louis Aguirre , Anchor/Reporter/Environmental Advocate

Anastasia Pavlinskaya Brenman , Producer

BIG PINE KEY, Fla. – As the end of the legislative session came to a close last week in Tallahassee, legislators added an item to the state budget that would fund research on a marine mystery developing in the Florida Keys.

If signed into the budget by the governor, $2 million will be allocated to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to “ determine the scale and scope of the ongoing fish mortality and disease event in Biscayne Bay, Florida Bay, and the Florida Keys. ”

Since Local 10 News’ report last week , the number of critically endangered smalltooth sawfish that have been recorded dead by FWC has risen to 21, and we have received a steady stream of videos from concerned residents in the Florida Keys.

Separately, more than a dozen fish species have been seen “spinning” and acting erratically.

“Now we don’t know if these two events are related,” Gil McCrae, the director of the FWC’s Fish and Wildlife Institute, explained to Local 10 Anchor and Environmental Advocate Louis Aguirre. “But we have the investigations and lines of inquiry going on right now.”

FWC says they have ruled out pathogens, bacterial infections and red tide toxins.

In a statement, the agency also added that “dissolved oxygen, salinity, pH, and temperature are not suspected to be the cause of the fish behavior or kills.” That full statement can be read at the bottom of this article.

But officials aren’t the only ones investigating.

“Back in February of last year, I noticed that pinfish started behaving odd, like they were playing dead,” reflected Little Torch Key resident Gregg Furstenwerth. “And then some of them were spinning.”

For Furstenwerth, the Lower Keys are more than just a vacation spot. This is his home.

That’s why after he saw that first pinfish he pressed record, and hasn’t put down his camera since.

“And then come around November, I started seeing the behavior (the fish) start doing that again,” Furstenwerth said.

“At first, I was scared and now I’m just curious what the environment is going to turn into if this keeps on progressing.”

That curiosity is fueling both residents and tourists to document these bizarre behaviors from Key West, all the way north to Key Largo.

In a video posted Wednesday by the Ocean First Institute , the organization’s director of research and conservation, Chris Malinowski, expressed his shock and awe.

“We’re in the Upper Keys right now, off of Key Largo, and this is to our knowledge the first time we’re seeing the fish spinning off in this area,” he said as he documented an erratic fish in broad daylight.

One video from December, sent to Local 10 News from the Big Pine Key area, showed a confused stingray splashing about on the surface. “What is he doing… I’ve never seen them do that,” the visitor can be heard saying.

Another recent video from the Spanish Harbor Chanel taken by fisherman Angel Eiras showed dozens of snook acting bizarrely.

“I walked about one-half mile along the shore during low tide and witnessed over 30 dead snooks and a lot more acting erratic with [a] swimming condition I’ve never seen before,” Eiras told the Don’t Trash Our Treasure team via Instagram.

“We have a very serious situation in the Lower Florida Keys now that could be spreading to the middle and upper-level Keys,” Brian Lapointe, a Florida Atlantic University research professor, said.

Lapointe is the principal investigator at FAU’s Ocean Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute.

For more than four decades, Lapointe has conducted the bulk of his research in the Lower Florida Keys and calls the area home. During that time, he witnessed first-hand changes in water quality at his underwater “laboratory” at Looe Key.

“Back in the ‘70s and ‘80s, I used to dive Looe Key when it was pretty much still intact–as it has been for 1000s of years–covered with branching corals,” Lapointe reflected. “Unfortunately, we don’t experience that anymore.”

While the formal investigation into this recent fish behavior began in November of last year, Lapointe believes that we need to go further back to understand the situation.

“So this story really goes back to last summer, when we began to see that pea soup, green water appear on the keys that first appeared in late June, early July,” Lapointe reflected. “I was getting texts from divers saying Brian what is going on.”

“It got worse through the summer,” he added. “And as we all know, we had a very hot summer in South Florida that exacerbated it.”

Lapointe volunteered to collect his own water samples last week after seeing images from his neighbors in Big Pine Key. Furstenwerth, along with other concerned residents, joined him.

“These are from Pine channel in Bow channel in the Lower Florida Keys,” explained Lapointe as he showed some of the samples while the Don’t Trash Our Treasure team visited his Fort Pierce laboratory.

“(One) thing we we found in our water sampling last week, was a dinoflagellate called Gambierdiscus,” he explained. “Normally, it’s a benthic dinoflagellate that lives attached to seaweeds on the bottom… so to see it up in the water column at relatively high concentrations…was unusual for us.”

According to the U.S. National Office for Harmful Algal Blooms , there are at least 18 different species of Gambierdiscus. So far, it does not appear to be the smoking gun that scientists are looking for.

“Gambierdiscus is related to red tide, but not closely related,” explained Professor of Marine Science in the Water School at Florida Gulf Coast University’s Water School Dr. Mike Parsons . “So it’d be like us [humans] versus a dog in terms of how closely related we would be.”

Parsons has been working directly with FWC in their investigation of the Lower Keys. He is also a member of Florida’s Blue-Green Algae Task Force and serves as the Director of the Greater Caribbean Center for Ciguatera Research.

Ciguatera is a neurotoxin that can be caused by ciguatoxins, which are one of the 18 types of Gambierdiscus.

“If that was happening, we would expect to see a Ciguatera outbreak, [and] we’d expect to see people getting sick from eating fish,” Parsons said. “There are no reports of that, so that meant [that] left us scratching our heads.”

Local 10 News reached out to the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County to confirm if there has been any increase in symptoms that could be linked to Ciguatera poisoning but did not hear back.

McCrae offered this piece of advice: “If you see a fish swimming erratically, if you catch a fish that doesn’t appear to be healthy, it’s best to avoid consuming that fish.”

“Is Gambierdiscus causing this fish behavior? We’re not 100% sure there,” Parsons said. “But that’s our lead right now.”

But for now, the case has yet to be cracked in this aquatic investigation.

“A lot of people are working hard on this, we want to get to the bottom of this just as quickly as everyone else does,” he said.

“Because as soon as we figure this out, then we can talk to start talking about mitigation, start talking about solutions..and that’s where we want to be talking.”

While the scientific process takes its time, Furstenwerth says that he hopes this is a point of reflection for everyone.

“It’s important that people pay attention to what we have,” he said. “And not wait until we figure out what we’ve lost before we decide that it’s important.”

For now, Lapointe emphasized the need for everyone to stay patient and calm. “This is a new phenomenon, it is still a big mystery, a puzzle that we’re trying to put together,” he said.

“We will ride this out and hopefully come out on the other side…better for it.”

Full FWC statement:

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is documenting reports of abnormal fish behavior (spinning and whirling) in the Lower Keys. There have also been reports of small-scale fish mortalities in these areas. FWC is working with partners and stakeholders to investigate the abnormal behavior. More recently, there has been a series of smalltooth sawfish deaths in the Lower Keys that could be related to this event, and to date we have 21 confirmed dead sawfish. FWC staff are coordinating recovery of smalltooth sawfish carcasses, which is aided by reports to the sawfish hotline 844-4SAWFISH or [email protected]. Samples from carcasses are being sent to FWC’s Fish Health group for analysis and/or distribution to experts elsewhere. At this time, the cause of the abnormal behavior and mortalities is not known, and efforts to collect and analyze samples are ongoing. What we know so far: Based on fish necropsy data to date, there are no signs of a communicable pathogen and specimens were negative for bacterial infection. Additional sawfish tissues are still being processed for analysis. Dissolved oxygen, salinity, pH, and temperature are not suspected to be the cause of the fish behavior or kills. To date Red Tide toxins (brevetoxins) produced by Karenia brevis have not been detected in water samples. As we continue to respond to this event the FWC holds steadfast to working collaboratively with our conservation partners, stakeholders and the community. Public reports are an essential resource to our investigation into this event. Please report abnormal fish behavior and fish kills to FWC’s Fish Kill Hotline at 800-636-0511 or MyFWC.com/ReportFishKill. How you can help: Sawfish: Report all healthy, sick, injured or dead sawfish to FWC’s Sawfish Hotline at 844-472-9374 or via email at [email protected] with the date, time and location of the encounter, estimated length, water depth and any other relevant details. Under the Endangered Species Act, it is illegal to catch, harm, harass, or kill an endangered sawfish. It is also unlawful to possess, sell, carry, or transport sawfish or parts of sawfish—such as the rostrum (snout). While some fishermen catch sawfish as bycatch, they can follow safe handling and release guidelines to quickly and safely release incidentally captured sawfish. Fish Concerns: If you see abnormal fish behavior, fish disease, and fish kills, submit a report to FWC’s Fish Kill Hotline either through the web form MyFWC.com/ReportFishKill or by phone 800-636-0511.

Fish are dying in the Florida Keys. Scientists are getting closer to finding out why

(WSVN) - Scientists want to know what is going on in the waters off the Florida Keys. That’s because fish there are behaving strangely and even dying. 7’s Heather Walker has tonight’s 7Investigates.

The videos are all over social media: Fish swimming in circles

Gregg Furstenwerth, diver: “I had no idea what it was. I mean, I saw the fish spinning and I was like, ‘What is it’ and, you know, at the time I thought it was hilarious.”

But diver Gregg Furstenwerth soon realized the fish was in trouble and other fish were also struggling.

Gregg Furstenwerth: “Then that was like, ‘What do you do?’ It’s alarming and sad and depressing. Just beyond anything I’ve ever seen in my life. And I’ve been in the water a lot.”

Gregg has been diving in the keys since 2021. For the past year, he’s seen all types of fish spinning and twirling.

Gregg Furstenwerth: “I see this every day. Every single day. I can go out and see the fish struggling and spinning and dying.”

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission says 27 species are now affected, primarily in the lower keys from Big Pine to Key West, including the critically endangered smalltooth sawfish. Many have grounded themselves. As of last week, 20 have died.

Gregg Furstenwerth: “It’s heartbreaking sitting there watching a live grouper for 2.5 hours die. I’ll tell you that. It’s not something that anybody wants to see.”

And no one knows why it’s happening.

FWC is working with Florida Gulf Coast University and others to find answers.

Mike Parsons, marine science professor, Florida Gulf Coast University: “The typical causes would be something like red tide or low oxygen in the water. That’s not the case here.”

Mike Parsons is a marine scientist at Florida Gulf Coast. He has been studying in the Keys for 15 years. This is the first time he’s ever seen something like this.

Mike Parsons: “One interesting thing about this is so many different fishes are being affected. So that led to our hypothesis that maybe it’s something in the water maybe dissolved in the water itself.”

When fish start spinning, it usually means there is some neurological impact on the fish.

Right now the professor says their best lead on a possible cause is a microscopic algae called gambierdiscus. It’s a naturally occurring toxin that is normally harmless. But recent tests show extremely high levels in the water.

Mike Parsons: “It does remain a mystery, but we are making some progress.”

Greg says they need to move quickly before things get worse.

Gregg Furstenwerth: “Nobody knows what this is. Nobody knows how to stop it.”

Greg and scientists hope whatever the problem is, they can find a solution to save the fish.

Heather Walker, 7News.

On a windy winter morning in January, Joyce Milelli was leading a kayak tour through the Lower Keys when the group rounded a mangrove island and encountered a startling sight: a rare, endangered sawfish, as big as Milelli’s paddleboard, wedged under a low clump of mangroves.

The discovery would set off alarms amid an ongoing mysterious fish disturbance , littering the scrubby islands between Key West and Big Pine with sick and dying fish.

“I knew right away something was not right,” said Milelli, a former nurse who grew up on Key Largo without ever seeing one of the rare sawfish. “I paddle all over the Lower Keys, all the way down to Dry Tortugas and the backcountry, where you don't see many people paddling. My number one thing was to see a sawfish. So I knew this was really special, but why is it tucked under the branches?”

Five days later, the sawfish appeared again, this time flopping on a nearby shallow flat, where it quickly died.

In the months since, about 60 sightings of endangered smalltooth sawfish have been reported, thrashing on beaches and flats, with images and video spreading across social media. At the Geiger Key Paddle Hut , where Milelli leads her tours, state wildlife officers this week hauled in a dead sawfish and wrapped it in a blue tarp.

Altogether, 20 of the very rare fish have been collected and examined by researchers, said Dean Grubbs, a Florida State University fish ecologist and member of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s sawfish recovery team. But so far testing done by toxicology experts has gotten no closer to providing answers. And as numbers climb, concern grows.

“I do think we’re probably underestimating the number here in terms of figuring it out,” Grubbs said. “It's puzzling to me, too, that there'd be so many sawfish compared to other species. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me.”

Only five species of sawfish exist around the world, all at perilously low numbers. The smalltooth sawfish is the only sawfish found in U.S. waters and was added to the endangered species list in 2003 after it nearly vanished in the 1950s, wiped out by catch netting and loss of habitat in shallow estuaries where it gives birth to pups.

Grubbs and Florida researchers studying the fish have tagged over 100 to track their movements and found sawfish are typically found in deeper water, up to 200 feet deep, in January and February. (None of the dead fish found so far were tagged.) In March and April, they move north, near the Ten Thousand Islands, the Caloosahatchee River and Charlotte Harbor to give birth. Because tracking data is only uploaded twice a year, it’s not clear if their movements have changed this year.

And the unusual behavior observed in the Keys has never before been reported by sawfish experts, Grubbs said.

“They should not be swimming in circles. They should not be coming that close to the shore. And certainly there's no reason for their rostrum to be out of the water,” he said.

“I do think we’re probably underestimating the number here in terms of figuring it out. It's puzzling ... It doesn't make a lot of sense to me.”

Fish behaving strangely were first spotted in early November as far north as Biscayne Bay, when alarmed fishing guides began collecting reports and contacted the nonprofit Bonefish Tarpon Trust as sightings mounted in December.

By early January, the Lower Keys Fishing Guide Association and BTT had formed a working group and recruited two toxic algae experts from Florida Gulf Coast University and the University of South Alabama. The incidents mostly remained concentrated in near shore waters, along a nearly 25-mile stretch, from Summerland Key south to Sugarloaf, although Grubbs said sightings appear to be spreading.

“It’s very violent,” said Gregg Furstenwerth, a technical diver, who began spotting the fish in November. “You can see them doing gentle spinning after they've essentially, I guess, exhausted themselves. But when it first starts, it's very, very violent.

Furstenwerth moved back to the scrubby islands between Big Pine and Key West, where he’d grown up, two years ago to introduce his wife to a playground of seagrass meadows and reefs teeming with fish, sponges and colorful coral that filled his childhood.

Instead, the couple has spent the fall and winter documenting the mysterious outbreak, filming pinfish, snook and jacks swirling and flopping.

Last week, he encountered a Goliath grouper, struggling to stay upright.

“It was scooping matter off the bottom as it was spinning and then spitting it out of its mouth repeatedly,” he said. “They seem to be unable to control themselves, to reach equilibrium. They can't stay upright at all, like they're just in all other directions except for upright.”

Word spreads, but officials remain tight-lipped

The worrisome behavior remained mostly under wraps. State agencies participating in the study group made no public announcements. But when endangered sawfish started turning up dead in late January, the 'Conch Telegraph' started buzzing.

Facebook lit up with pictures: sawfish swimming into the rocks at the White Street pier in Key West. A dead stingray on Higgs Beach. A Goliath grouper slamming its head into a muddy bottom.

“If something is going on, word spreads fast,” Milelli said. “If this continues, there's a lot of fallout from this potentially.”

Neighbors began asking Fursternwerth what he knew.

“People are noticing. People who work at the gas station are telling me they know about it. They just heard about it in their local coffee shop,” he said. “Anybody who's seen it is scared by it.”

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has provided few details about the investigation. Requests for information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Monroe County were referred back to the FWC. When contacted by WLRN, FWC asked for a list of questions. But in response, the agency provided only confirmation of sawfish deaths, details about six sawfish, and no information about other sick fish.

Initially, FWC media staff released the number of reported sightings for the endangered fish as well as the number of bodies examined by scientists, but stopped.

Scientists say only reporting confirmed deaths likely underestimates the true count. In response to a records request last week, a clerk initially said the information had been processed but had been forwarded to Tallahassee for review before being released. A supervisor later said the request was still being processed.

Florida's Fish Kill hotline received an increasing number of sightings of unusual fish behavior across the Lower Keys in February after dead sawfish were discovered in late January.

Algae experts say pinning down the culprit is difficult. Initial water testing showed elevated levels of a tiny dinoflagellate found in the algae, called gambierdiscus, that causes ciguatera. The algae is naturally occurring and grows on reefs, where fish eat it, and typically doesn’t sicken fish. But humans who eat the fish can become very ill , suffering from nausea, vomiting and even neurologic symptoms.

When fish were tested, scientists found multiple toxins in addition to gambierdiscus, said Mike Parsons, an algae expert at Florida Gulf Coast University and a member of the state’s Blue Green Algae Task Force.

“We didn't find a smoking gun. That doesn't mean it's not buried somewhere,” he said. “But it's not as easy as some of us were hoping it would be.”

It’s possible that what’s making fish sick is a new affliction, or at least one never diagnosed by scientists, he said. The toxin produced by gambierdiscus was only identified last year, he said, and can change form after it enters a fish.

“Which means you have a moving target,” Parsons said. “So it just makes it really hard. Yeah, it's really difficult.”

A resilient ecosystem under threat

It’s also possible that what’s ailing the fish is related to the unprecedented ocean heat wave that hit South Florida over the summer, drove up temperatures by about 5 degrees and bleached coral across the Keys.

“The system that's impacted here in the Lower Keys is a very resilient ecosystem system that has endured a lot of change,” said Martin Grossell, a fish ecologist at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School who specializes in how fish work and the toxins that harm them.

But at some point, he said, mounting stresses like nutrient pollution from leaky septic tanks or other chemicals flushed into the sea from stormwater and ships, or rising ocean temperatures, start to trigger changes.

“We are adding to this environment and eventually may reach a threshold where now this balance is perturbed,” he said. “Then you start seeing things that you haven't seen before and things that we have a hard time explaining.”

That’s left Keys residents to worry that time is running out.

“I tell people that the ocean doesn't give up its secrets easily,” Furstenwerth said. “I was one year old when the ( sea urchins ) died, and they didn't figure out what it was until this year,” he said, referring to the mass die-off of long-spined sea urchins that wiped out 98 percent in just 13 months in the 1980s.

“Is it going to take 41 years to figure I was doing this?” he said. “I don’t think it has 41 years.”

As the investigation continues, researchers are asking the public to report sightings of distressed fish to either the state fish kill hotline at 800-636-0511 or online at MyFWC.com/ReportFishKill . Sawfish sightings should be reported to 1-844-4SAWFISH via email to [email protected] .
