The album finds the British pop star making both personal and creative revelations

Sam Smith has released their highly-anticipated new album Gloria, and the video for “I’m Not Here To Make Friends.”
The track was produced by Calvin Harris and is accompanied by flamboyant visuals directed by Tanu Muino (Lil Nas X, Harry Styles, Normani). Dressed in pink, Smith steps out of a gold helicopter to be greeted by a Bacchanalian-inspired celebration.

As the video progresses, they take over a country house filled with revelry, fully embracing their moment and living in their element. They win from a grand chandelier as the track crescendos, party-goers fawning around them. The imagery serves as an allegory for unapologetic individuality, denoting freedom, joy, and self-expression.
Gloria , as a whole, finds Smith making both creative and personal revelations. Their third album so far, the record discovers what it means to be truly free – being in touch with your innermost self. Aided by celebrated female figures from its creator’s musical circles like Kim Petras (the global smash hit “Unholy” ), Jessie Reyez , and Koffee (both on “Gimme” ), it also explores themes of sex, passion, self-expression, and imperfection.
“ Gloria is also a celebration of all the genres and all the female divas, vocalists, and pop writers that I love,” Smith added in a statement. “I harnessed all those memories and put them into one album. And I wanted to be defiant. My diva album? I think so! I think I’ve finally let my Gloria out.”
Next week, Smith will head to the Grammys , where their platinum-certified single “Unholy” is in the running for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance . The star will also perform at the ceremony, which will be held in Los Angeles on February 5. Although it is unconfirmed what they will sing, it appears likely they will share a rendition of “Unholy,” given Petras is also confirmed to appear.

Divisive or double standard? The controversy around Sam Smith's raunchy tour and music video, explained
Sam Smith 's latest music video for "I'm Not Here To Make Friends" seems to have made the pop star quite a few enemies – as has their tour, which kicked off April 12 in England.
The video – which includes scantily clad dancers gyrating on beds and under streams of water – has sparked strong reactions on Twitter, where users have attacked and defended the singer. Smith, who identifies as nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns, dons a sleek black dress, a fluffy hot pink gown and a corset with nipple pasties while singing about wanting to find a lover.
The live tour is promising to be no less controversial and has Twitter users criticizing Smith for employing playful devil imagery onstage and performing in sparkly underwear and thigh-high boots.
Experts say the reaction has less to do with the performances' suggestive nature and more to do with the person at the center of it.
Sam Smith slammed by critics; supporters say only thing 'gross' is the backlash
Following the video's release on Friday, people have slammed the singer for flaunting their sexuality.
Most of the backlash involves disparaging comments about Smith's body and the video's risqué imagery. In one scene, Smith appears to wear a thong, in addition to nipple pasties, a corset and bedazzled gloves and a hat, while surrounded by backup dancers whose skin-tight costumes have openings that reveal their rears.
The backlash also prompted an outpouring of support from Smith's fans, who defended the singer's self-expression.
"Seeing Sam Smith be targeted because of their appearance is… really really disgusting," @GagaManiaUK wrote. "As someone who struggles with how they look I don’t understand how you can say some of those things to another human being, it’s just so… gross."
In an interview with The Sunday Times published Jan. 22, Smith opened up about struggling with their body image in the past.
“Within my industry there is definitely that question of, ‘What should a pop star look like?'" Smith said. "When I was 25 I came off tour exhausted. I looked to role models in the body world. Every time I went to the pool I felt self-conscious, but I forced myself to take my top off."
Sam Smith is done wallowing in a new chapter of self-acceptance on 'Gloria' album
Sam Smith controversy highlights two key issues, experts say
Gender identity, sexuality and body image "are all interconnected," says Abigail Saguy, a sociology professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. As a result, Smith's video, which rebels against social expectations of both gender and body type, has provoked backlash on multiple fronts.
"There's certain things that are normative, expected in society – heterosexuality and gender conformity being very strong, normative expectations and thinness being another," Saguy says. "People police that. When you step out of the lines and behave in ways that are nonconforming, there's often a backlash and social cost to that."
That social cost is often lesser or nonexistent for people who flaunt their sexualities while fulfilling gender and beauty standards, says LGBTQ therapist Miriam Geiger. For those who don't, however, the social response can be brutal. Lil Nas X, for instance, came under intense criticism for his music video for "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)," which saw him dance suggestively with the devil — something the openly gay rapper and singer later said was a play on anti-gay religious rhetoric . Lizzo, an outspoken advocate for body positivity, also frequently faces backlash for her wardrobe and sexual self-expression.
Sharon Stone makes surprise 'SNL' cameo during Sam Smith's 'Gloria' and as skit seductress
Body dissatisfaction rampant among LGBTQ youth, research shows
Geiger adds that Smith's video also speaks to body image struggles within the LGBTQ community. According to research published this month by The Trevor Project , a non-profit dedicated to LGBTQ suicide prevention, nearly nine in 10 LGBTQ youth report feeling dissatisfied with their bodies, with rates of body dissatisfaction 10% higher among transgender and nonbinary youth.
“As LGBTQ youth across the U.S. regularly consume media and messages related to their bodies, we must do a better job of centering acceptance for a diversity of body types – not just those that have been deemed 'ideal' in the eyes of mainstream media," Myeshia Price, director of research science at The Trevor Project, said in a statement. "Historically, media portrayals of LGBTQ people have been monolithic and often fail to represent the realities of how LGBTQ people look and live."
By violating traditional beauty and gender standards, Smith could inspire LGBTQ people to find more confidence within themselves, Geiger says.
"People are on all sorts of journeys with their body image, but if you saw this (music video) and thought, ‘Maybe tomorrow I could feel better about who I am and how I look and how people perceive me,' or 'I could care less about how people perceive me,’ that could be a really good thing."

Review: SAM SMITH - GLORIA TOUR at Xcel Energy Center
This concert was on Wednesday, August 16, 2023
Multi-Platinum, GRAMMY®, BRIT, Golden Globe and Oscar winning artist/songwriter Sam Smith has announced GLORIA The Tour – their first North American run since 2018. Jessie Reyez , who guests on Sam’s album, Gloria , will be the special guest.
Sam’s fourth studio album, Gloria , includes the GRAMMY®-nominated single “Unholy” ft. Kim Petras, which spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and four weeks atop the U.K. Official Singles Chart.
Sam has racked up over 35 million adjusted album sales, 250 million single sales and 45 billion career streams across their catalog, which includes the critically acclaimed studio albums In the Lonely Hour , The Thrill of It All and Love Goes . A four-time GRAMMY® winner, Sam also holds two Guinness World Records – for the most consecutive weeks in the U.K. Top 10 Album Chart (for their 2014 debut, In The Lonely Hour ) and for having the first James Bond Theme to reach No. 1 on the U.K. charts (for the Oscar and Golden Globe winning “Writing’s on the Wall” ).
It was an absolute delight to witness Sam Smith bring their electrifying Gloria tour to the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The stage was adorned with a captivating large gold human sculpture that served as the centerpiece for Sam Smith 's performance, accompanied by their talented dancers and back-up singers.
Throughout the concert, Sam graced us with renditions of their chart-topping hits, kicking off with the soulful "Stay with Me." The setlist included other favorites like "Lay Me Down" and "Latch," each delivered with an infectious energy that had the crowd captivated from start to finish. The synergy between Sam and their dancers was flawless, enhancing the visual spectacle of the show.
Notably, the trio of exceptional back-up singers provided seamless harmonies, and what stood out was Sam's gracious decision to showcase each of these vocal powerhouses individually during the performance. This thoughtful gesture added a unique dimension to the concert experience, allowing each artist to shine.
Sam's wardrobe changes throughout the evening were a spectacle in their own right. The flashy and stylish outfits not only complemented the music but also amplified the overall visual extravagance of the show, leaving a lasting impression.
The audience was unequivocally engaged, singing in unison and swaying to the velvety, mellifluous tones of Sam's vocals. Beyond the music, witnessing a queer identifying artist command the stage with such authenticity and confidence was genuinely inspiring. Sam's unwavering commitment to being true to themselves was a poignant reminder of the power of self-expression.
Sam Smith 's concert was a true testament to their artistry and stage presence. As the final notes reverberated through the venue, it was evident that this was an experience to be cherished. A heartfelt thank you is due to Sam for gracing us with an unforgettable evening. This concert was absolutely amazing! His voice was so angelic and he was so genuine and humble. Every time he smiled it melted my heart because you could tell how grateful he was and how much he loves his life and it was just so beautiful! Everyone was there to just have a good time and everyone was singing along and it was such an incredible environment. One of the best moments was when someone from the crowd threw a rainbow flag on the stage during his song “HIM” and he took it a waved it around while everyone cheered in support of gay rights, it was so amazing. He is so inspiring and honestly my favorite artist. This was hands down the best concert I’ve ever been to, and I never wanted it to end. One of the best nights of my life.

One of the best shows I’ve ever been to, so emotional and it still a happy show. When he played we could feel everything he was singing about, we felt his emotions. The whole concert was amazing, the opening show (Lewis Capaldi) was really good, love his voice and the songs he played. What I loved most about Sam Smith was the simplicity of his concert, there was no need for an elaborated scene, we’re there to see him and his singing, not a big show with a lot of dancing and decorations (not saying concerts who have that are bad, I actually really like them, what I mean is that he doesn’t need that to be great). Also, the decorations were so cool and amazing, and his speeches were simply beautiful and powerful LOVE IS LOVE!❤️
Everything about the show was amazing, ypu touch everyone in the auditorium. The songs you decided to sing were excellent and the feeling you put to every song you showed it in your eyes. After every song you smiled to the public and that made us more excited to be there and sometimes put tiers of excitement in our eyes. We could all related to your songs in different ways. You are an inspiration to me. I'm so happy I got the opportunity to see you after the show and get your autograph in my ticket and sweatshirt. That night it's going to be unforgettable for every person that was there that night and the night before. Hope I have the opportunity to see you again here in Mexico City.

Sam Smith: Gloria review – the lovelorn balladeer turns to the dancefloor
(EMI) The singer’s fourth album ups the tempo – and makes history – but stops short of fulfilling its potential as a fun-filled stomper
I n 2016 the singer Sam Smith made a gaffe that became a huge international incident. Accepting an Oscar for Writing’s on the Wall, a Bond theme tune from the previous year, Smith suggested that the win was a first for an openly gay creative, before dedicating the gong to “ the LBGT community around the world ”. Smith was factually incorrect – there had been previous out winners – and the singer spent time on Twitter humbly backpedalling.
Fast-forward to 2023 and two sample-filled parentheses on the artist’s fourth album, Gloria , testify to Smith having done their LGBTQIA+ history homework. One, Hurting Interlude, attests to the double agony of losing love and not being able to discuss your pain openly with others. The sampled TV news interview dates from the 1970 New York Gay Pride march.
Another – Dorothy’s Interlude – compresses near-subliminal snippets of gay culture cornerstones: Judy Garland singing Over the Rainbow, Divine in John Waters’s Pink Flamingos , a 1973 speech by activist Sylvia Rivera, and a smidgen of Paris Is Burning , the 1991 documentary on ballroom culture. The message seems to be that Smith, who has identified as non-binary since 2019, is now all caught up – and that they are ready for an uptick in presentational visibility to boot. On a recent Saturday Night Live performance, Smith wore a fluffy pink sculptural gown that opened to reveal trans singer Kim Petras – who guests on Unholy, their smash hit of the end of last year, under Smith’s skirts.
Even though In the Lonely Hour (2014) declared itself to be a howl of pain at unrequited love for a man at the time , it feels as though Gloria may be the end result of a long pupation. On Love Me More , Smith sings about past struggles with self-worth and, more importantly, how they feel now. “But lately it’s not hurting like it did before,” they sing. And with Unholy, Smith and Petras have, in fact, made history – topping the singles chart in the US – a first for an out non-binary artist and a trans singer . The song calls out a man who is cheating on his wife at “the body shop”; its frank discussion of sexuality and outre video seem to have absorbed not only the lessons of LGBTQIA+ history, but of Lil Nas X’s forthright commercial juggernauting as well.
What’s more, Unholy may well have garnered more than 1.7bn streams and a Grammy nomination precisely because its raunchy maximalism marks such a shift from Smith’s damp hanky of a back catalogue. Smith’s voice is an elastic, expressive instrument that can ache, husk and soar – sometimes in the same breath. But their career to date has relied heavily on the evergreen appeal of heartworn balladry, classicist fare whose mild musical manners won’t give anyone a conniption. Smith has been inching away from retro heartache for some time – Promises , Smith’s co-sign with Calvin Harris five years ago, was arguably a tipping point - but Gloria seeks to drag Smith out of their funk and reinvent them as a dancefloor contender, no longer a homebody reeling from lost love but one banging out the feelgood bpms.
And largely, the album is persuasive. Smith is an easy fit for disco pop; the sultry, shouty I’m Not Here to Make Friends finds them on the hunt for physical gratification rather than anything more. Even more upfront is the mischievous, tropical pop-inflected Gimme , where Smith’s vocals drip with yearning and Canadian singer Jessie Reyez and dancehall MC Koffee provide nasty-girl backup. The tempo might be slower, but Six Shots is another digital-era come-hither that owes far more to the sexed-up soul of D’Angelo than it does the stuff on Radio 2.
Frustration then sets in. Why not go the whole hog and make the Sam Smith equivalent of Renaissance , Beyoncé’s all-partying shakedown of 2022? Did no one notice a song called How to Cry on the track listing and stage an intervention? Although it harks backwards rather than forwards, the a cappella title track itself is more compelling, however. Gloria is the name of an energy – possibly feminine, possibly of nature – that Smith says has been freed inside themself. The song is one of praise, where Smith solos soulfully all over the higher and lower voices of a choir recorded at the Saffron Walden church in Essex that Smith attended as a child.
But then Ed Sheeran crops up on Who We Love, bearing the unnecessary gift of a midtempo wet blanket. Sheeran, who once gave Smith a 6ft 2in penis statue in marble, is no stranger to frisky club pop. Sure, Smith sings about feeling free to love who they love, but you’d think Sheeran might have realised something slinky might have been more apposite on an album dedicated to fun – and liberation from the past.

An itinerary for Sam Smith in Bangkok, based on their best songs
Sam Smith is in Bangkok as part of the Southeast Asia leg of their ‘Gloria’ world tour. Holy, unholy, or dancing with strangers, we’ve put together a few ideas for how they can spend their time here.
English singer-songwriter Sam Smith is in Bangkok as part of ‘Gloria The Tour.’ They’ll be performing at Impact Arena on 3 October, marking their return to Bangkok after five years. The Asian leg of the tour will commence in Bangkok , before the artist heads to Hong Kong, Taipei, Osaka, Yokohama, Seoul, Manila, and Singapore.
Sam Smith shot to fame after being featured on tracks like Disclosure’s Latch and Naughty Boy’s La La La in the early 2010s, and has since released many chart-topping hits, like Unholy, Dancing with a Stranger, Too Good at Goodbyes, and Stay With Me.
Smith is also an active voice in the LGBTQ+ community, and is the first openly non-binary musician to release a song that has reached the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 spot, and to win a Grammy award . They are famously always down for a good time in Thailand, and so we can’t wait to see what they get up to this time.
In anticipation of the big concert tomorrow night, here’s an itinerary for Sam Smith in Bangkok, based on their best songs.

While in Bangkok, Sam Smith should check out the historic temples in the Old Town for a holy experience, before stopping by at Nuss Bar for some Unholy tipples
It was hard to come up with an entry for the name of Sam Smith’s latest, greatest hit, Unholy , but we got creative. Even though it isn’t Sam’s first time in Thailand, if they want to enjoy a cultural experience and witness some of the most gorgeous temples in the country, they should head to the Old Town for this holy experience.
After temple-hopping, right opposite the Grand Palace in Tha Thien, Sam could go down a more Unholy route and try out the cocktails at Nuss Bar . Located just downstairs of the award-winning Nusara (helmed by Chef Ton , of Asia’s Best Restaurant 2023 , Le Du), we highly recommend they go for the spectacular tasting menu (with an unbeatable view) here too. Do you Desire something more casual, Sam? There’s also May Rai down the road, which serves up some of the best Pad Thai in town. The more casual wine bar and eatery is another brainchild of Chef Ton — it’s almost unholy how many venues the man has.
Find out more at Nuss Bar , Nusara , or May Rai .
During the day, they could explore the Writings on the Wall through Charoenkrung’s street art
Who can forget the iconic soundtrack of the James Bond film Spectre ? Whilst they aren’t strictly writings, we think Sam Smith would enjoy an art walk in Bangkok, and Charoenkrung is a charming area to do this. Once they’ve taken a few shots for the ‘gram, Sam Smith could head indoors to River City for some air conditioning and antiques shopping. Featuring many rare and precious items, we’re sure they’d find some really gorgeous pieces for their home. We just hope they don’t have Money On [Their] Mind when asking for the price.
We know Sam Smith would definitely enjoy Dancing with a Stranger at Stranger Bar
The Stranger Bar is known as a ‘House of Drag Queens,’ and something tells us Sam Smith would adore this. Known as the first full drag venue in Thailand, the shows are iconic, and many famous Thai drag queens make appearances here. We can already see Sam on the floor here, dressed to the nines, Dancing with a Stranger at Stranger Bar. They might even go La La La.
Find out more at The Stranger Bar .
For a late night snack, they could head to Jeh Oh, but they’re Not the Only One
After all that partying, nothing hits quite as good as some spicy tom yum . Of course Sam Smith has to try Thai food while they’re here, and no one does this staple dish better than Jeh Oh. Located in Chula’s lively university area, we’re sure Sam would meet many fans here. Given Jeh Oh’s popularity, they may even have to wait in line alongside them, because [They’re] Not The Only One. While ordering, if they want it extra spicy, we recommend they ask for Fire on Fire . They can handle it.
Find out more at Jeh Oh .
To relax after the concert, Sam could ask the team at endota to “ Lay Me Down” for a massage
We’re sure the concert is going to be a banger, so it’s important for Sam Smith to relax in Bangkok, too. Opened just a few weeks ago, we suggest they head to the new endota spa, and ask the team to Lay Me Down for a restful and restorative treatment. We think they’d love the use of crystals or warm stones to ease muscle tension. If Sam falls asleep during the treatment, the therapist may ask afterwards: How Do You Sleep, Sam?
Find out more at endota Thailand .
When they leave Bangkok, Sam Smith could check out the new terminal at Suvarnabhumi, because they’re just Too Good at Goodbyes
Whilst all we really want to say to Sam is Stay With Me , Bangkok only marks the start of their Asia tour. They will have to leave us at some point, but we know they always do it in style. Before departing, Sam Smith could check out the new satellite terminal at Suvarnabhumi International Airport, because let’s face it: they’re just Too Good at Goodbyes .
Sam Smith’s ‘Gloria The Tour’ takes place on 3 October at Impact Arena. You can still get tickets at Thai Ticket Major . Prices start at THB 2800.

Sam Smith Gloria tour: Singer breaks down on stage as they stun audience with incredible opening night show in Sheffield
Sam's outfits, including a gold corset, devil headwear, stockings and pitch fork wowed the audience at Sheffield
- 12:15, 13 APR 2023
Emotional Sam Smith broke down in tears on the opening night of their Gloria world tour in Sheffield, before they stunned the audience with not only incredible vocals, but an array of edgy and eye-catching costumes.
Sam, 30, put on a hugely energetic performance, belting out their smash hits and chart-toppers, right from the beginning of their career to the present day.
Starting the night with 'Stay With Me' and straight into 'I'm Not The Only One', Sam dazzled in a glistening gold corset, to match the theatrical stage productions, including a giant gold statue spread across the stage. It was then Sam's turn to greet their audience and it was emotional.

Sam, who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, said: "Seeing all of you to look at is a joy. Welcome to the Gloria tour. It has been so, so long since I have been on a stage like this. It's been five years and a lot has happened. "
Putting their hands on their head and voice trembling a little, Sam continued: "I just want to say (starts crying) thank you so much for being with me through these crazy times, it means the world to me. As long as you are happy, I will sing for you every night.
"Thank you for being here. Tonight is my chance to give as much energy to you to give you a good time. This show is about love and a show about freedom. It is so important to me that you all look to your left and right and say hello to everyone near you.
"This is a safe space and you can do whatever you want. I want you to have fun, and nothing can go wrong. I love you all. thank you for being here."
And, wow, was it fun. The show is divided into three acts (in reference to Sam's love of musical theatre). These are 'Love', 'Beauty' and 'Sex' and the audience is taken on a real journey.
From the mesmerising ballads to the more up-tempo numbers, there really is something for everyone. And, if you think you won't be up on your feet dancing, then you are wrong. Sam's classic hits including 'Promises', 'I'm Not Here To Make Friends' had everyone strutting their stuff.
When Sam asked the audience to imagine they were on a night out in a gay club, it was very easily done. And Sam had donned an extravagant pink ruffled tulle gown to add to the feel.
Sam's costumes were incredibly show-stopping. From an extravagant green dress with a 'queer' headpiece, to stripping down to black underwear and fishnet tights for their cover of Madonna's hit 'Human Nature'.
They also sported elbow-length gloves and draped a long sheer veil over their shoulders, which was fixed in place on their head with a gold wire-style headpiece. Known for referencing religious imagery in their performances, Sam also ported a black bustier, fishnet tights and over-the-knee boots with red laces for their final song of the night - Unholy, which has definitely left a lasting impression.
Sam was joined on stage by an array of backing dancers, who also sported many eye-catching outfits including sheer glittering silver ensembles. A special mention must also be given to Sam's band and backing singers - all stars in their own right. They were phenomenal.
I would go as far as to say that this is one of the best concerts and performances I have ever been to. For those with tickets booked, you are in for a real treat.
