Sherpa Tours – Explore The World (from Home)

Sherpa Tours

I had the opportunity to ask Michael Suskind, the founder of Sherpa Tours , some questions. Enjoy learning more about this new and upcoming travel company.

Sherpa Tours is taking a new approach to touring a city. Can you please tell us what Sherpa Tours is and what you offer?

Sherpa Tours is the first walking tour app with an augmented reality avatar guide. When you buy a tour, you receive both the GPS-directed tour you can do in the city and the remote version you can do anywhere.

Remote tours GPS tours

Who are the people behind Sherpa tours? How did Sherpa Tours get started? What made you think of the idea?

I (Michael Suskind) am the founder of Sherpa Tours. Here are some more information about us.

sherpa virtual tour

Sherpa Tours from Home

When a traveler wants to do a Sherpa Tour, of say Stockholm Sweden, from the comfort of their home. How does that work?

After you download the app on your phone, you simply click the “Start remote tour!” button, and the tour starts. It has the same content as the GPS tours except you can do it from home. And unless you do it on a treadmill, no walking is necessary.

What features and what kind of information can be expected, on these tours?

On the remote tours, you watch Carli, our avatar guide, talk about each of the tour points. Each of the tours is created either by a long-time local guide or an expert, many with Masters and PhDs. At Sherpa Tours, we believe that tours can be works of art filled with detailed, engaging history and stories that engage the listener on the highest-level.

How long are the virtual home tours?

They average around 40 minutes, some are a bit longer, some are a little bit shorter.

What are the benefits of doing a city tour from the comfort of your home?

Well, it allows people to “travel” from their couch. This is great for folks (like me!) who want to get back out there on the road but can’t during the pandemic.  Plus, it helps you with pre-travel planning.

GPS Sherpa Tours

sherpa virtual tour

After you select the Essential Copenhagen tour, the Sherpa app gives you GPS walking directions to the first tour point. When you arrive, Carli, our augmented reality guide, tells you all about the first tour point, the Little Mermaid statue. When the narration is complete, the app gives you GPS directions to the 2 nd tour point, the Copenhagen Harborfront.  This process continues to the end of the tour, Copenhagen’s famous Botanical Garden.

If somebody needs to take a break in the middle of the tour, can the program be paused for lunch, for example?

Yes, absolutely. In fact, that’s one of the best features of Sherpa – you set your own pace.  If you want to grab a bite to eat or spend more time sightseeing at a certain location, all you have to do is swipe out of the app or put your phone to sleep. It will remember where you are so you can continue where you let off when you’re ready.

How long are these destination tours?

With walking, depending on the tour, they can take from one hour to 3+ hours.

What’s the benefit of doing a Sherpa Tour at the destination compared to joining a walking tour with a guide?

When you hire a tour guide, you never know for sure how good or knowledgeable that guide will be. With Sherpa tours, you know you’re getting the best version of that tour. Most Sherpa Tours are around $5, so the value is tremendous. Plus, you can start the on-demand Sherpa tour whenever you want or take a break whenever you want. Additionally, the Sherpa Tours app allows you to ‘avoid the crowds’ which is not possible when you’re part of a group tour.

Are the virtual tours from home and the city travel tours done at the actual destination the same?

They’re almost exactly the same. The only difference is that the tours in the actual destination are GPS-directed and have an augmented reality tour guide.

What to Expect of Sherpa Tours

In general, on these city tours, what kind of information can be expected? Is it the main highlights of the city, or do you go more in-depth?

For our ‘Essential’ tours, you can expect to have the best ‘introduction’ to a new city right at your fingertips. Our Essential tours are designed to give you a sweeping intro to that city. You’re going to go to the well-known tourist spots in a city and also some off-the-beaten spots.

Plus, many of our Sherpa cities have additional niche tours. For instance, Prague and Budapest have Jewish tours. We have multiple architecture-focused tours in Chicago, Barcelona (Gaudi), and Miami (Art Deco). Also, we have Wonders of the World tours: Angkor Wat, Acropolis, Forbidden City, Machu Picchu, and Pyramids of Giza.

What makes Sherpa Tours different from other tour companies?

We believe we’ve figured out what travelers want. In the age of Uber, people expect things fast, on-demand, affordable, and great. Sherpa Tours delivers on this. Having an augmented reality tour guide gives users the feeling that they’re being led by a real-life tour guide.

Who is Sherpa Tours for?

Sherpa Tours is for anyone and everyone who loves to travel! The tours are world-class, easy to access, and a terrific value.

The Tour Guides

Sherpa Tours offers guided tours in many cities around the world. Who creates the city-tours? Please tell us about the tour guides that work with you.

Right now, we have over 150 tours in over 80 cities, spanning six continents (no plans for Antarctica as of now…). We plan to add cities continuously so that we have tours in every major city in the world. We also have Sherpa Premium, a subscription plan that gives you access to all our tours (remote and GPS), that’s an incredible deal.

As mentioned earlier, tours are created either by a long-time local guide or an expert, many with Masters and PhDs. We have over 50 tour creators. Here are some examples:

  • Creator of the Essential Copenhagen and Royal Copenhagen tours

  • Buenos Aires tour Creator

  • Creator of the Boston Freedom Trail tour

sherpa virtual tour

We are all about Scandinavia. What tours do you offer in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Iceland?

virtual tour stockholm

Yes, of course! We have tours in:

  • Stockholm (Essential Stockholm)
  • Copenhagen (Historical Copenhagen)
  • Oslo (Essential Oslo, Grünerløkka)
  • Helsinki (Essential Helsinki)
  • Reykjavik (Essential Reykjavik)

See The Nordic Sherpa tours, here!

If a traveler has a specific request, will you customize a tour for them?

As of now, we don’t. However, we love to hear suggestions from Sherpa users.  We’re always looking for the next great tour!

Popular and Unique Sherpa Tours

What would you say is your most popular Sherpa tour?

We have many very popular tours, including the London: Power, Politics and Royalty, Essential Bruges, Hidden Treasure of New York City’s 42 nd Street, Chicago: Public Art in the Loop, Essential French Quarter, and Essential Hanoi.

What’s your most unique tour?

One of our most unique tours is our Belfast: The Troubles tour. It was created by Sean Campbell, a journalist from Belfast. Here’s a little intro:

Walking through the culturally and historically rich West Belfast, through strongholds of both sides of the political divide lying just meters apart from one another, you’ll learn the story “The Troubles”, the euphemistic name given to a 30-year civil war.

When it comes to the technical, does Sherpa use up a lot of your cell phone battery? Does the app support all phones?

Depending on the battery’s condition, a GPS walking tour, will use up around 30% of the battery. We recommend the user starts the tour with a full battery. We also suggest using the non-AR mode (e.g. audio-only mode) during most of the tour narrations.

For iPhones, you need an iPhone 6S or later. For Androids, you need an ARCore supported device (which most phones released in the last 3 or 4 years should be). The list of ARCore supported devices can be found here: https://developers.google.com/ar/discover/supported-devices.

Feel free to share a review or story from a happy customer .

One of my favorites reviews from the App Store is this one:

This is one of the best touring experiences I’ve ever had. The best part was going at my own pace, and clearly understanding our guide, whom I now call Ms. Sherpa. But just as great was learning really interesting details of London’s history while I was being guided around the incredible architecture of Westminster Abbey and fascinating history of Blackfriars. For example, who knew that London was first founded by the Romans?! Or that Henry the VIII became head of the church in England because the Pope refused to grant him permission to….well, I don’t want to give it all away! Really enjoyed it. Thank you, Ms. Sherpa! – Thedrumman84

What’s your personal favorite travel destination?

There are so many! My family and I have had wonderful experiences in Vietnam, the UK, Ireland, Sweden , Ecuador, and Peru.

The Future of Sherpa

What does the future hold for Sherpa Tours?

The foundational guiding principle of Sherpa Tours is to offer AR avatar-led walking tours that are world-class, on-demand, and affordable. And in the not-too-distant future, Sherpa Tours will take this experience to the next level by harnessing cutting-edge technology of augmented reality glasses. Imagine exploring the Great Wall of China alongside your Sherpa AR guide as workers construct the ancient wonder stone by stone. Or seeing the sights of Washington, DC with President Barack Obama as your personal tour guide. This is the world that Sherpa Tours is building towards.

For the travelers out there ready to do a Sherpa Tour right now, what tips and advice can you give them for the best experience?

Have a fully-charged battery. If you have any issues with the tour (not common but happens every once in a while), just swipe out of the app and click the “To the GPS tours!” and it’ll fix the issue and you can continue the tour exactly where you left off.

If there is anything else you would like to share about your company or your tours, please do so.

Sherpa Tours is a small company, but we plan to revolutionize the tour industry. We hope intrepid travelers will find our tours what they’ve been looking for. Also, we offer a 1-year subscription called Sherpa Premium, which gives access to all 150+ tours (both remote and GPS) for a very reasonable price.

Thank you so much. I appreciate you taking the time to share more about yourself and your company!

Thank you! I really enjoyed answering these questions!

What city would you want to explore from the comfort of your own home, with a Sherpa Guide?

Hey Veronica,

Thanks for this great article about virtual Sherpa tours! This is such a great concept in the times we live in. With travel so restricted, I know many people—myself included—cannot wait to start exploring the world again. Virtual Sherpa tours are a great avenue to get a little adventure in without leaving the safety of my home! It’s such a cool idea to have a virtual avatar guide to walk you through the tour destinations in a given area, and I like that it was created by real tour guides. I look forward to taking a true, in-person tour once restrictions are lifted again.

Thanks for sharing!

Sherpa tours are really a great way to explore cities around the world from the comfort of your home. Nothing is like real travel, but I believe that Michael and Sherpa tours have really found a fun, interesting, and engaging way to do city tours from home.

Give it a go! Explore one of the many cities that they offer!

The Evolving Travel ‘Experience’: Virtual, Actual and In Between

Socially distanced craft classes, virtual tango lessons, a city tour accompanied by an avatar guide: how experience companies — which now include Amazon — are adapting to the pandemic.

sherpa virtual tour

By Elaine Glusac

Guided excursions have long been at the heart of travel , but like everything else, the pandemic disrupted such experiences, and many went virtual . But as travel begins to tick up, existing tour companies are adapting to social distancing in other ways.

Some are complementing virtual experiences — for instance, guided chocolate tastings with chocolate shipped before the tour — and tailoring closer-to-home actual adventures, like kayaking and hiking. Others are making groups smaller or private and moving outdoors.

This fall, a new player, Amazon, took a deep dive into the strictly virtual model with the start of its Amazon Explore platform, which offers everything from online shopping tours in Peru to tango lessons from Argentina .

Even in destinations that are reopening to international tourism, some operators are waiting for travel to rebound before switching entirely from virtual to actual. Since Panama reopened to international travel last month, Jerin Tate, the owner of Panama Day Trips , has guided just a few in-person tours and plans to continue offering free virtual birding tours in Soberanía National Park near Panama City into December.

“We’re crossing our fingers and hoping, hoping, hoping there’s some semblance of normalcy then,” he said.

In the meantime, the trend reflects a continuum from virtual to actual, as seen below.

Virtual shopping, dancing and salsa making

The online retailer Amazon applies its shopping prowess to the sourcing of souvenirs with the new platform Amazon Explore . In one-on-one sessions, armchair travelers can visit a leather maker in Seattle ($20), vintage shops in Tokyo ($49) and a Norwegian department store ($90), accompanied by local guides. In many cases, relevant items are available to purchase during the experience — via Amazon, of course.

Not every experience is shopping related. Amazon offers tango lessons with an instructor in Buenos Aires ($90) and a voodoo and cemetery tour in New Orleans ($90). A category devoted to creativity, including a class in Mexican salsa making ($39) and in the Japanese tie-dye style known as shibori ($40), often includes a list of items to have on hand to work alongside an instructor.

“Amazon Explore is designed to complement, rather than replace, traditional travel,” the company stated in an email.

Though Amazon has long threatened small retailers, the new platform uses its size and distribution power to link customers to small businesses around the world. Currently, Amazon Explore is offering 175 experiences, ranging from $10 to $168.

“Shop owners, guides, teachers, chefs, stylists, artists, and artisans can get access to millions of customers on Amazon while setting their own prices and hours,” the company stated.

To test the system, I signed up for a shopping tour of Kappabashi Street ($25), the “kitchen town” of Tokyo filled with shops selling kitchenware. In a quick 45 minutes, Giulia Maglio, a guide with Ninja Food Tours, used a hand-held camera to take me to three shops in the neighborhood where we discussed the different styles of chopsticks (fat and flat for tofu, ribbed for ramen), how to hold a rice bowl by the pedestal and the preponderance of lifelike plastic food restaurants use to signal what’s on the menu.

“The purpose is also to make you hungry,” she said.

Beware the temptation of browsing abroad. I ordered two rice bowls for $20, which cost an additional $20 to ship. But Amazon made it seamless — it charged the credit card I used for the tour in a matter of seconds at the end of the session — and I doubt I’ll forget how I acquired them.

“Daycations” close to home

With travel curtailed, Americans sought real-life diversions outside of their homes, according to Peek , a booking management platform for small businesses offering experiences from farm tours to kayak rentals.

This summer, it saw a shift to what it calls “daycations,” or excursions close to home. In June and July, 70 percent of bookings were from people residing within 150 miles, compared to 50 percent at the same time the year before.

Trending activities included wild mushroom foraging in Santa Cruz, Calif. ($90) and nighttime boat tours in St. Augustine, Fla. ($31). A Peek user, Tanaka Farms in Irvine, Calif., adapted its farm tours as drive-through events, including an upcoming holiday lights festival (from $49 a car).

“People have been stuck indoors and wanted to find things to do in real life,” said Ruzwana Bashir, the founder of Peek, noting that the company set a record for October bookings.

The San Francisco-based chocolate maker Dandelion Chocolate , another Peek client, adapted its experiences online, now offering chocolate tastings ($70) and truffle making ($100) that include shipments of chocolates to participants in advance for a blend of virtual and real elements.

“We’re able to reach more people now,” said Cynthia Jonasson, the head of education for Dandelion, who said private bookings often celebrate a birthday or other milestone with attendees from various locations.

Outdoor adventures

Adventure outfitters are booking locally, too. Traffic to 57Hours , a site launched in 2019 that links travelers to outdoor adventure guides, picked up over the summer as users, primarily locals, turned to outdoor adventures for socially distant diversions, especially in private bookings.

Guide services start at $80 for a half-day of hiking or surfing and average $200 to $300 for a full day of climbing or backcountry skiing.

“A lot of guides who normally are doing international trips or working in the Swiss Alps are now home and have to market themselves for the first time,” said Perica Levatic, a co-founder of the company.

Greg Hill, a professional skier and 57Hours guide based in Revelstoke, British Columbia, champions the “ 300-Mile Adventure Diet ,” which he writes about for the site, espousing trips within a tank of gas as a way to travel more sustainably and appreciate what’s close by.

“Often, the romanticism of what’s far away kind of blinds you to what’s in your own backyard,” he said. “I find that if you stay within a radius of home you’re going to see those rivers and mountains again and again and then your trips will resonate longer than a mountain in Pakistan, because you’ll never see it again.”

Even the culinary company Traveling Spoon , a network of cooks who open their homes to travelers for meals, has found ways to resume in-person operations, including moving outdoors with barbecues in Manila (from $74), picnics in the Azores islands (from $76) and cooking classes in an outdoor kitchen near Florence ($170).

Augmenting real-life experiences

For those ready to take a city walking tour but eager to avoid other travelers, including guides, Sherpa Tours uses avatar narrators and augmented reality technology on itineraries downloaded to a mobile app.

GPS technology directs users from site to site where an avatar appears on your smartphone screen, discussing the landmark from scripts developed by local experts including historians, professional guides, architects and writers.

After a disappointing walking tour of Quito, Ecuador, with a dull guide, Michael Suskind, a private investigator based in Chicago, dreamed up Sherpa, which launched in 2019 and now has more than 150 tours in 80 cities globally.

“I wanted to come up with something that removed the risk of getting a bad guide,” he said.

Having tried the Sherpa tour of Millennium Park in Chicago, I found the contactless excursion a socially distant way to tour — we were able to stand well apart from other park-goers and still enjoy the narrative — with the high-tech novelty of following a virtual person at an affordable price (most tours cost $4.99).

“It’s very flexible,” said Bori Korom, a guide, writer and editor based in Budapest who has written three tours for Sherpa. “If someone likes to be spontaneous, you can stop and check out a museum or get a bite to eat, and then come back to the tour three hours later.”

Learning from experts

For 17 years before the pandemic, Context Travel linked travelers with very specialized guides, including architects, historians and artists on private and small group tours, recently in more than 70 cities globally.

When the pandemic shut down travel, the company quickly moved to virtual tours online in a series called Context Conversations , featuring live 90-minute lectures on cultural subjects — such as the music of Ireland and the Hindu festival of light called Diwali — with its experts (from $36.50).

“Our key points of difference are offering scholarly tours for the intellectually curious or lifelong learners,” said Evan Frank, the chief executive of Context Travel.

Online, the Conversations — about 600 to date — often use location as a springboard to investigate topics like the women of the Harlem Renaissance , the cultural history of Japanese green tea and portrait painting as propaganda used by the Tudors in 16th-century England.

Compared to in-person guiding, “It’s a little more professorial,” said Marie Dessaillen, an art historian and Context guide in Paris. “You can’t read the clients to know if they are understanding, but you get that in Q. and A. at the end.”

An expanded offering called “Courses” features a series of lectures, including a recent two-day, eight-hour exploration of the Trans-Siberian Railway with a Russian historian ($175).

Henry Lummertz, a lawyer based in Pôrto Alegre, Brazil, has taken the Trans-Siberian course among more than 250 Context Conversations since they launched in March.

“Traveling and learning are very important to me and I lack that now,” he said. “This is a way to interact with people from a place I would like to visit.”

Sherpa Tours allows people to travel the world from their armchair

Using the world’s first augmented reality guides, the sherpa tours app offers in-depth city tours from wherever you are. rose dykins reports.

Armchair travel has been a major trend for 2020, with online offerings such as Airbnb Experiences and virtual reality (VR) tours from tourist boards providing creative ways to see the world while we’re grounded due to Covid-19.

Travel app Sherpa Tours offers another novel option, with its augmented reality (AR) tour guides that take people on virtual walking tours from the comfort of their own home. (The Faroe Islands did something similar earlier in the year.)

Available to download from Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store, Sherpa Tours is like having an on-demand private tour guide. As well as being used while exploring a destination, it also presents a great option for armchair travellers keen to get to know a new city – with an expert guide in avatar form leading the way.

It’s possible to sit on your sofa at home with your phone and follow along as a Sherpa virtual guide takes you on a video tour of a city. You can also save the tour’s route onto the app and follow the GPS routing at a later date, when you’re able to be in a city in person.

Sherpa Tours app

For example, Jill Waller, PHD candidate on Egyptian Art and Archaeology created the app’s Pyramids of Giza tour, while its London tours were put together by Blue Badge guide John Gowing, who has more than 100 only five-star reviews on Tripadvisor.

When following along a Sherpa tour in real life, it’s possible to pause when you arrive at a particular stop to explore at your own pace – such as to browse at an art gallery – or to stop for lunch. You can also set the app to deliver audio-only or avatar-only tours, as its GPS and AR functions use up a lot of smartphone battery power.

sherpa virtual tour

The vision of Sherpa Tours’ founder, Michael Suskind, is for there to be a Sherpa Tour for wherever you are in the world, guaranteeing a high-quality guide is always available. The idea came from his experiences of travelling the world with his family and using tour guides.

“When we travel, one of our favourite ways to experience a new destination is a walking tour,” he says on Sherpa Tours’ website. “There’s no better way to get a feel for a city.

“Finding the right guide, however, can be hit or miss. Sometimes we get lucky with an informative, engaging, and personable guide. Very often, we don’t.

On December 31, 2017, we were on one of the not-so-good tours. In front of the Basilica del Voto Nacional in Quito, listening to a dull by-the-book tour guide, a thought flashed into my mind…What if there were an app with excellent, well-designed walking tours led by an augmented reality tour guide.

“From that moment on, it has been my mission to create Sherpa Tours. Our goal is to blanket the world’s cities and travel destinations with Sherpa tours. So that every time you arrive in a foreign land with a desire to explore and learn, we hope your first thought is “let’s go on a Sherpa tour…”

Go On a Tour of One of the Greatest Sets in Star Trek History

Grab a jumja stick and let quark himself take you through one of the most important locations in star trek : deep space nine's promenade..

What’s the most important set on a Star Trek show? Depending on the series, it might differ—for the most part, it’s going to be the bridge of a starship . But “the bridge of a starship” isn’t really the answer to that question: it’s the place that feels most like home . And while it’s definitely not a starship, Deep Space Nine ’s promenade is exactly that, perhaps more than any other iconic locale in the franchise.

Today as part of a series of updates to its virtual tour offerings on the Apple Vision Pro, the Roddenberry Archive and OTOY announced a raft of new virtual reality set tours , taking fans inside the world of Star Trek . To celebrate this week’s return of Star Trek: Discovery , the bridge of the legendary vessel is now available for virtual visitation, as are the first virtual tours inside the fleets of the Klingon Empire —specifically the I.K.S. Amar , the K’t’inga battle cruiser from the opening of The Motion Picture . But perhaps the most fascinating addition is a further exploration of Deep Space Nine ’s titular station, and the most important place of all among its rings and pylons : the thoroughfare of the Promenade.

The Promenade was already part of the archive, but now audiences can explore further aspects of the set—one of the biggest ever built for Star Trek , the biggest outright at the time of filming—but the real highlight is a new, accompanying documentary about the design history of the set and its legacy, narrated by the perfect tour guide for such a locale: Armin Shimmerman, the man behind the lobes of the Promenade’s premiere businessman, Quark.

It’s a great little piece, looking at the set’s design process, how its scale was captured on screen, as well as Shimmerman relishing in giving little in-universe guides to everything that the Promenade had to offer. It’s a reminder of not just what an impressive set it was, but how its design language informed the very heart of what Deep Space Nine was doing with Star Trek . In the Promenade, we have a primary set that is unlike anything we’ve ever seen on the show before: this is not Federation design, or Starfleet ship corridors, but the brutalist angles of Cardassian aesthetic clashing with the pops of color from the flags hung by the Bajorans and other alien cultures steadily in the process of reclaiming what was once a grim shadow over the oppressions of Bajor. Few Star Trek sets are exactly comforting, but this heady mix of sharp angles and cool metallics against the vibrancy of shop lights and flags brings the Promenade a sense of homeliness that few other regular Trek sets could match.

But one thing this tour can’t capture about the Promenade that made it so compelling in the first place is the people milling about the place: the life that made it feel like home more than anything else. Sure, every Trek set has had some flavor of walk and talk on it before, the bustle of crew milling about and looking at monitors, but the Promenade was life itself made manifest. The culture clash of the design language was echoed in the people —so many people, more people than we would often see in one place on Trek outside of big crowd sequences or social hubs like canteens and bars. You had Starfleet crew, sticking out in their black and division-colored uniforms, you had the browns and beiges of Odo and his local security officers, you had Bajoran priests, you had civilians of all species and stripes, from visitors passing through to vendors hocking food and trinkets—and, of course, the myriad patrons of myriad scruples flocking in and out of Quark’s bar. The Promenade was defined by background vibrancy, a social and communal space that was far more important to Deep Space Nine than the cramped battle bridge of the Defiant , or the command crew’s home in operations.

That life made the Promenade sing—sometimes literally, in the case of the Klingon restaurateur playing his accordion and roaring traditional Klingon ballads at diners—and it made it the heart of Deep Space Nine , a sacred space for the viewer that the show could then violate at a moment’s notice to amplify any given threat. The Promenade has been home to firefights, assassination attempts, it’s been besieged , it’s been captured by our heroes’ worst enemies, but it’s also a place of love, adventure, and fun, the sight of some of the best moments in the entirety of DS9 . It is, after all, where the show’s heart is—and that is where home resides.

Star trek quark actor armin shimerman leads ds9 virtual tour.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine comes to life in a stunning digital recreation that fans can explore with Quark actor Armin Shimerman narrating.

  • Take a virtual tour of DS9 with Armin Shimerman as your guide for behind-the-scenes tidbits on the Promenade.
  • Explore the history of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and its characters in a digital recreation of the station.
  • Watch The Roddenberry Archive video narrated by Shimerman as Quark, highlighting the world of DS9.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's eponymous space station comes to virtual life with Quark actor Armin Shimerman as fans' guide to DS9's history and Promenade. Thanks to the Roddenberry Archive and OTOY, a digital recreation of the famed space station commanded by Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) can now be toured by fans . Deep Space Nine's tour in the Roddenberry Archive is now live.

OTOY's YouTube uploaded a new video titled The Roddenberry Archive... Deep Space Nine... The World According to Quark . Narrated by Armin Shimerman as his loveable Ferengi entrepreneur, the video delves into the history of the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine TV series and takes viewers on an informative journey throughout the space station's famed Promenade , with lots of behind-the-scenes tidbits. Watch the video below:

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Cast & Character Guide

What happened to deep space nine after the star trek tv show ended, ds9 continued to be a hub of commerce and enterprise after the dominion war.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine ended in 1999 after 7 seasons, with Captain Sisko ascending to become one with the Prophets of Bajor after leading the United Federation of Planets to victory in the Dominion War. Although Sisko hasn't returned in Star Trek canon, the Deep Space Nine space station endured for years after the Dominion War ended. Under the command of Colonel Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor), DS9 remained a center of commerce and enterprise as it guarded the wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant.

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 visited Deep Space Nine and caught audiences up with Colonel Kira and Quark.

Star Trek: Lower Decks not only brought back Colonel Kira and Quark, but Lower Decks season 5 also visited Ferenginar so that Grand Nagus Rom (Max Grodenchik) and his wife, Leeta (Chase Masterson), opened the door for the Ferengi to join the Federation . Of course, what DS9 fans want most is a revival of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , be it in an animated series or in live-action. Although DS9 wasn't seen in Star Trek: Picard season 3, it's implied that the station is still out there in the final frontier . Thankfully, Roddenberry Archives and OTOY's virtual recreation lets fans come back home to Deep Space Nine.

NASA, U of I Capitalize on Solar Eclipse to Improve Weather Tracking

April 04, 2024.

MOSCOW, Idaho — The last total eclipse to cross the U.S. until 2044 will occur Monday, April 8, and a team of University of Idaho engineering  students is using the event to help NASA gather data needed to improve global weather forecast models and climate change mitigation processes.

For the past year, U of I engineering students have been training teams nationwide as the lead university in the Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project (NEBP).

Teams use weather balloons to gather data on atmospheric disturbances produced during eclipse events, including gravity waves that represent a transfer of energy through the atmosphere. For decades, scientists have been tracking gravity waves because of their influence on weather patterns and forecast accuracy.

NEBP teams will be stationed along the path of totality from Texas to Maine, engaging in launches to gather data on these disturbances.

The U of I team is traveling to North Springfield, Pennsylvania, to launch weather balloons Sunday and Monday, April 7-8, and gather data during a 30-hour launch session held during the total solar eclipse.

“Knowing this is the last visible eclipse in the U.S. for the next 20 years, the teams we’ve trained nationwide are crucial to gathering the datasets we need,” said Matthew Bernards, U of I College of Engineering associate professor and co-project lead. “The data will continue to improve long-term weather forecasting capability. Better prediction methods have global impact on agriculture, aviation and the economy.”

Students traveling include graduate student Konstantine Geranios of Spokane, Washington; and undergraduate students Caeley Hodges of McCall; Logan Kearney of Moscow; Ashley Keeley of Mukilteo, Washington; Cole Long of Boise; Chase Long of Boise; Shashwot Niraula of Nepal; and Will Schaal of Coeur d’Alene.
