Star Trek: Enterprise Ending Explained: Those Were The Voyages...

Enterprise cast

"Star Trek: Enterprise" — originally just called "Enterprise," – was once considered by many Trekkies to be the black sheep of the pre-Abrams era. While it still had many of the same creative people working behind the scenes (the show was created by longtime Trek honchos Rick Berman and Brannon Braga) it deliberately struck a different tone, exploring the early, raucous days of Starfleet: before the formation of the United Federation of Planets, before the writing of The Prime Directive, way back when there was only one Earth ship trekking through the cosmos. The goal was to create a Trek show that was less anodyne than its predecessors, recapturing some of the frontier spirit occasionally seen in the original 1966 TV series.

Other changes included an wholly updated aesthetic; the Enterprise looked a lot more like a submarine than a cruise ship, and the crew wore uniforms that looked a little bit like NASA jumpsuits. There were only two alien species aboard this time: Vulcan first officer T'Pol (Jolene Blalock) and the genial Dr. Phlox (John Billingsley), playing the previously unseen species of Denobulan. Additionally, the traditional orchestral opening of the previous five Trek TV shows was replaced by a truly, truly awful Rod Stewart ballad called "Faith of the Heart" a.k.a. "Where My Heart Will Take Me," sung by Russell "The Voice" Watson , written by Diane Warren, and originally included on the soundtrack to "Patch Adams."

"Enterprise" debuted in 2001 and was met with mixed reactions. Some critics, if recall is to be trusted, positively praised its production value and novelty, while others missed the reliable Trek iconography.

It's Been a Long Road...

When it debuted in September of 2001, "Enterprise" struggled almost immediately. Fans weren't taking to the show in the same way they took to "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" or "Star Trek: Voyager" as it was set in a new time frame which required a new push for audiences to refamiliarize themselves. What's more, it was the only Trek show on the air at the time, with "Voyager" having ended its run in May of the same year. Previous Trek shows had been doubling up, and it was the first time since 1993 there weren't at least two "Star Trek" shows on the air at the same time. "Enterprise" had a lot to prove.

Some of the early story arcs didn't play well to mythos-minded fans, and the Temporal Cold War story, featuring an evil species called the Suliban , is rarely brought up in conversation I have with other Trekkies. A little more attention is given to the Xindi  who, in a story arc beginning in season 3, destroyed Florida in what was very clearly a 9/11 metaphor. Yes, check again the month and year of "Enterprise's" debut.

"Star Trek: Enterprise" season 4 introduced more multiple-episode arcs, and "Star Trek," along with most TV shows at the time, began to evolve into longer-form stories and season-long arcs rather than stand-alone mini moral dilemmas that had been Trek's stock in trade for decades. But the change was too little, too late, and "Enterprise" was canceled after an inauspicious four seasons. For comparison, "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Deep Space Nine," and "Voyager" all ran for seven years each.

A pity, really, as some have said (anecdotally) that the show was just finding its feet.

Getting from There to Here

The final episode of "Enterprise" was ... Well, it was an interesting choice. A big part of the appeal of "Enterprise" was its placement as a prequel to the original "Star Trek" series, meaning there was a mild thrill in seeing how certain things would come to be. This was, of course, after the same thing was being done with "Star Wars" starting with "The Phantom Menace" in 1999, but before "Batman Begins" pretty much popularized the "reimagined origin story" as a dominant storytelling trope throughout pop media. All of this is to say that "Enterprise" was meant to tie into what good Trekkies knew was coming in the future.

As such, the final episode of "Enterprise," titled "These Are the Voyages..." (originally aired on May 15th, 2005), had to rush to finally connect series back to the Treks were knew and loved. Enter Jonathan Frakes, Will Riker from "Star Trek: The Next Generation," a series that was set about 200 years after the events of "Enterprise." Rather than merely recite the official denouements of Capt. Jonathan Archer , T'Pol , Trip Tucker , Malcolm Reed , Hoshi Sato , Dr. Phlox , and the memorable, memorable character of Ensign Mayweather , we were given a broader view of "Enterprise" history as seen by William Riker, who was recreating life on the original "Enterprise" via a holodeck some 200 years after the fact.

In "These Are the Voyages...," Riker imagined himself as the hardworking galley chef on the original Enterprise, a character that was often talked about but never seen. As Riker envisioned it, the ship's chef served as a personal confidant to the crew, allowing him to have elaborate one-on-one discussion with each character. He also wanted to talk to the crew of the Enterprise shortly before the original ship was to be decommissioned, meaning the episode was also a flash-forward.

In short: "Enterprise" ended with a 200-year-old recreation of the future events of "Enterprise," as interpreted through the eyes of William T. Riker. The final episode of Trek was Mary Sue fanfic written by a Trek character. This is a nerd turducken of the highest order.

This approach, of course, allowed for a great deal of convenient historical fudging on the part of "Enterprise's" writers. If there was any sort of plot or character inconsistency, a viewer could chalk it up to Riker changing history to fit his own holodeck fantasy. More broadly, it was a comment on how we, as a species, tend to romanticize history, altering our past into heroic narratives and easy-to-consume stories rather than a complex timeline of daily events.

It's Been a Long Time

A bit of editorializing, if I may...

Reaction to "These Are the Voyages..." was largely negative. The inclusion of Riker, not to mention the eventual addition of NextGen's Counselor Troi (Marina Sirtis) robbed the "Enterprise" characters of their moment. While one can easily understand that the show's creators wanted to bring the timeline of "Enterprise" to a meaningful conclusion, skipping ahead in time and treating the show's events like a textbook column for other, different characters makes them feel distant and rarified, rather than exciting and immediate. Mild spoiler : The impersonal and abrupt death of one of the main cast members certainly didn't help either.

If one recalls the ending of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," it was made clear that the adventures of the Enterprise-D would continue — only without us, the audience, being able to see them all. A series needn't definitively conclude if we leave comforted that everything will work out fine for the characters. Perhaps a similar approach would have made for a better final episode of "Enterprise." Please, leave us with comforting send-off that would leave audiences assured that the cast would make it safely into Trek history, even if we don't get to see it.

That second approach would also open up the Trek "expanded universe." That is: Plenty of studio-mandated novels, source books, and speculative fiction writers could fill in any gaps that were left in the narrative. Indeed, given the historical element of "Enterprise," leaving gaps in history would be perfectly appropriate. Sadly, we were left with a final episode of Trek that left a bad taste in our mouths.

Maybe that's why so many audiences embraced the 2009 "Star Trek" feature film. It was an entirely new beverage, but at least it washed away the old one.

Now, where do we rant about the Paramount+ era?

‘Star Trek: Enterprise’ Cast Talks Series Finale Disappointment And Unfulfilled Season 5 Hopes

One of the livelier panels at the 55-Year Mission Star Trek convention in Las Vegas was with members of the cast of Star Trek: Enterprise . On hand were Anthony Montgomery (Travis Mayweather), Connor Trinneer (Charles ‘Trip” Tucker III), Dominic Keating (Malcolm Reed), and John Billingsley (Dr. Phlox). They were quick to point out to the crowd that unlike dozens of other celebrities, “We didn’t cancel!” Setting the tone, Billingsley added, “ Actually, technically speaking, I am a clone of John Billingsley. He sends his love. “

The panel covered what the actors were up to, favorite pandemic reads and streaming binges, and other light banter, but there was also some pointed discussion about their time in the 22nd century aboard the NX-01—especially about how it all ended and where it could have gone.

Season 5 hopes: Alive, and sex for Phlox

Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled in its fourth season. When asked if the actors had any knowledge of potential plans for what would have been the fifth season of the show, they generally agreed they had not been briefed on any details, and Dominic Keating suggested that the writers only planned “three or four episodes ahead.” But Anthony Montgomery did say he heard that Manny Coto—who’d joined the series in season three and was elevated to showrunner for season four—did have some thoughts:

When Manny Coto came in and what he did with season four… those two or three episode-arcs that you guys saw on the fourth season, that so many of you have come up and told us that you’ve loved. They said Manny was going to take us back to the Mirror Universe and that they had a lot of fun things in store.

John Billingsley chimed in with a bit of realism:

I had heard, though, that they did have some plans, and that did include going back [to the Mirror Universe]. I don’t think there was anybody in the upper echelon suites that entertained any realistic notion that we were going to come back. So I am not sure how fleshed out those plans were.

The actors differed in their hopes for the characters if the show got another season, although Trinner’s suggestion for Trip was pretty simple: “Un-dead… You all know I died, right?”

Billingsley’s season five goal for Dr. Phlox was also straightforward:

I would have wanted to have some sex. Anytime I ever got a little whiff of sex, it didn’t work out. Either my wife is throwing herself at Connor or something goes wrong. Everybody else, by the time the fourth season ended, I believe, had a little bit of sex.

As for Anthony Montgomery, he was just desperate for anything. At one point the actor said, “Did you see Travis? I can only do this so much [mimics control panel movements].” If there had been another season, he just wanted to explore Travis:

I would have liked to have learned more about my character. You guys saw Enterprise , our series became like The Original Series . It was about the captain, the engineer, and the Vulcan. So I was excited when we did “Horizon” and we got to learn about Travis. I wanted to see more about his family. That would have been fun.

Differing views on Enterprise’s Mirror Universe… and evil Phlox sex

Season four included a two-episode arc set in the Mirror Universe. When asked what their hopes were had there been a return to the Mirror Universe in season five, Billingsley was quick to respond:

I would like to have seen him have more sex! His sex would have perhaps been more evil sex, but I still would basically want the same thing.

Connor Trinner made it clear he did not like season four’s “In A Mirror, Darkly” episodes and would not have welcomed a return, saying ” I don’t like playing a pirate.” The actor revealed that his over-the-top portrayal of Mirror Trip was due to a lack of direction and that he was actually “kidding,” but the director actually liked it, much to his chagrin.

Billingsley had a different point of view on Mirror Phlox:

I like those episodes because I got to be jolly. I was the jolly vivisector… Both characters [Prime and Mirror] were buoyant. That was my through-line. No matter what fucking universe I am in, I’m happy. No matter what I’m doing.

Montgomery again was just hoping for something more about his character, even the Mirror version:

I was told that we were going to go back to the Mirror Universe. There was going to be Empress Sato and even though my character was the silent, strong type, I was curious to see where he was going to go. It was fun playing a bad guy.

On series finale: Scott Bakula was our captain!… also more Phlox sex

Enterprise ended its finale season with the episode “These Are the Voyages,” which did double duty as a coda to the entire Berman era of Star Trek that began with Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987. In so doing, the finale included elements of TNG including an Enterprise-D holodeck and the characters of Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Troi (Marina Sirtis). When asked about this finale, the usually even-keeled Anthony Montgomery was uncharacteristically critical:

I love Jonathan [Frakes] and Marina [Sirtis]. They are wonderful people, but Scott Bakula is my captain… Archer. I would not have had them come on, because I didn’t even know that we were a part of the holodeck until I read those episodes. And it just made me go, “Wait, so those other 96 episodes never really happened?”

He also felt the series finale should have been longer:

Give us two hours, like for the pilot. Give us a two-hour finale. That way we could have tied up a lot of things.

John Billingsley agreed on that point:

I do think we were all somewhat disappointed that the show didn’t have a multi-episode conclusion. It’s awfully hard to try and conclude a series in a single 15-minute segment, regardless of whether you like the framing device of Riker and Troi. I think the bigger question was, it just needed a bigger canvas. So I personally would have said to give it a three-episode out.

As for what he would have done for Phlox if he were recreating the finale, Billingsley remained on point:

Phlox would have had sex! I can tell you that!

While joking again about dying in the finale, Connor Trinneer said as an actor he found the work over four years gratifying. “They gave me so much to do and they fleshed out my character so well.” Regarding the finale in particular, he also took a different view from the others:

I was really satisfied with it, and I will tell you why. Trip was the only character on the show that got to complete the arc. You didn’t have to wonder what happened to him. And so that was satisfying, as the actor. It would have been nice to know what wound up happening to him had he not saved the ship. But, I’ve got no problem with it.

Billingsley had this to add about Trip’s death in the finale:

The one thing that bugged me wasn’t so much whether Connor died, that was fine, but the fact that he died foiling a second-rate jewel robbery seemed fairly pedestrian. It’s like save the universe at least!

Billingsley embraced the weird… also has Phlox spin-off pitch (actually not about sex)

When asked how much he was able to influence the character of Phlox, John Billingsley said he thought the writers did start picking up on his style, but they could have gone even farther:

This will be me being serious for once in my life. When an actor gets a part, you are bound by the words on the page. What you feel like you are doing is encouraging the writers to write into who you are as a person. So I think what happened is that they appreciated a particular aspect of my sense of humor, and kind of wrote into it. And I think that manifested itself. I did say to them, “Hey, as far as I’m concerned, I’d love to never give anybody a hypospray. I always want to put a bug up their ass.” They did not go as far as I would have liked… But I think we all could probably feel that we brought something of ourselves. And that encouraged them to write in certain directions.

At another point during the panel when they were all were talking about how much they liked getting episodes focused on their characters, Billingsley noted that these days he has a different idea:

That said, as you get older… At the age of 61, my idea for the spin-off is old, fat Phlox. Old, fat Phlox just sits in a rocking chair and tell stories about what happened in the past. And then young actors act them out. And I still get a healthy paycheck, but I only work half a day. [sings opening tune] ‘Old, fat Phlox he’s a-sittin’ on a box in the junction – Denobulan Junction.’

Star Trek Cruise Log 2: TNG Cast Jokes About Bad Episodes, Connor Trinneer Says To Get Over Trip’s Death

I’d totally watch Old Fat Phlox. But then I’d complain about how Kurtzman ruined it.

I’m sure they would have ruined the theme tune for Old Fat Phlox by choosing the wrong genre for it.

I spat out my coffee, LOL. Well played.

No offense, but “spat out my coffee” is used quite a bit, might something more original? 🙂

reH buqDaq wal ghogh HablI’ Dajem ‘e’ vItul, vabDot ghogh HablI’ DalIj!

Just loved the crew and the series ! It’s just a pity that the fifth note fell on deaf ears !

scrap s31 for Ent s5 (and 6/7)?

I second that! Or, at least an NX-01 miniseries. That’s mountains better than an S31 show

I 3rd that. Would much rather get just one final Enterprise season to truly wrap them up than see the S31 idea.

I don’t want a season 5. I want a Romulan War miniseries, set 10-15 years later. Because it would be just before the founding of the Federatin, and just before the actual finale, you could even get Trip to appear.

And I do want S31, but only if it’s an interesting premise: a group of time traveling heroes made up of new characters and Trek all-stars, venturing on important missions to fix problems around the multiverse; the ship’s crews recruited from various timelines, realities, and time periods, specially assembled for each mission (previously seen characters could sometimes played by their original actors, sometimes recast)… a different crew each week.

Now THAT would be exciting.

A Romulan War miniseries would be set no more than, what, six years later? Assuming it took place toward the end of the war.

Not hard to retcon a few of the details.

Your idea sounds like a Trek version of Legends of Tomorrow. Perhaps it shouldn’t be S31 but Temporal Investigations?

I’m okay with a Section 31 show, but the ship has (likely) sailed on a couple more seasons of Enterprise.

I would love to see a ‘ continuation , with the new crew , let that be set 15 years in the future, Trip not being dead , can be written off and ignored ( eg timer programmed a story that fit his circumstances as apposed to true ‘ history ‘ – but leave that more to fans own interpretation . It can be set for example with the crew , where perhaps , Reed is captain of ‘ those new warp 7 beauties , where the story though is not confined to just that crew but perhaps , the show could explore the construction of the first constitution class ships inter woven with the trials of ‘ nation building ‘, as a still young federation , first builds an intermediate ship , and then features , ‘ The captain right before April , then April himself, I mentioned a first captain, as the internet story ‘ first frontier ‘, ought to be acknowledged as a cannon story , as it’s story telling seems to gel much better with the kind of story telling in ‘ enterprise ‘, and then take us through to April , at the end of his 5 year stint , perhaps broken having lost the Kobayashi Mauru, to a rouge Klingon attack , something on those lines , but in short you’d also.want to add in Archer visiting enterprise, personally I’d have in that , an aged tucker , Phlox and still fairly youthful ,’ Tpol , now a Vulcan ambassador and mentor to a young Sarelk, . They’ve hinted before about a show set over different ships, but perhaps not one that’s set in two eras, that are both seperate in the sense of ship and crew but a thread between both , the struggles of multiple races coming together, to build a ship that would be a symbol of the struggle to get to where they are , with ‘ Romulan dissident raids, only not a ” 200 year old bad mood ‘ , but one still.raw from.a defeat by the ‘ rag tag ‘ alliance fleet , to their interactions and shady deals with the Klingons , filling in , how did Klingons get their cloak.technolgy at a time when scientists were pushed aside as the great house begin to fracture , if written and told right, it could be the best yet , who knows if it was a true lost year’s show, then each season is a different ‘ decade in trek.history ‘, allowing closure for fans of enterprise, April’s story , they mysterious voyages of the enterprise B, ay on the twist would be have it disappear at the end of that season , and one set between stargazer , and of course the next fateful Enterprise. It’s demise being the cause for ‘ why was the galaxy so big and powerful , what led Starfleet to build as early shows stated was the most complex ship ever . Like Picard’s last words in TNG , the sky is the limit , this is no fan wa** idea but properly written , not rushed, Spielberg very successfully told the ‘ Roswell story ‘ and set that over many decades, with every few episodes advancing into newer characters, while making you yearn to know and see more of each era . Fans have long called for the blanks to be filled in , who knows maybe having a season with a ship and crew who’s tragic end you know is coming , which cannot be changed , would be just the sort of drama the show needs .

A wonderful dream , Jonathan . The post-series Enterprise novels carry on the Trip-T’pol story . But I would hope to see a novel dedicated to their future , and maybe a dedicated duet to dear Dr Phlox too !

Did Keating move into a trailer park?

Life hasn’t been kind to the NX-01 Crew !

Who’s keen for an old Phlox or old T’Pol cameo in Strange New Worlds? Presuming of course that Denobulans have 150-200 year lifespans like every other non-human species in the Star Trek universe (apart from Ocampa)

ME!!!!!!!!!!!!

How about a Trip cameo in S31? They could do a flashback to the beginning of S31 and show that Trip’s death was faked (as it was in the post-series novels.)

I’m not a huge proponent of gratuitous fan service. As Jolene Blalock has left the industry, she’d need to be recast anyway.

Yes.. It seems like humans are some of the shortest lived species in the universe. I would have guessed that Klingon lifespans were a little shorter than humans.

“Getting From There to Here: The Story of Enterprise, the Spinoff That Killed Star Trek” is a documentary I want to see.

It didn’t ‘kill’ Star Trek. Even after the show was cancelled other networks and streaming sites still wanted to make their own shows, CBS just kept turning them down. There were also big filmmakers wanting to pitch new shows, Star Trek Federation being the known one and had came up with that show idea the same year Enterprise was cancelled.

And you know the biggest proof Enterprise didn’t kill Star Trek? Paramount announced a $150 million Star Trek movie directed by JJ Abrams less than a year Enterprise went off the air. I remember many people claiming at the time Star Trek was dead and that it needed to ‘rest’ for ten years before anyone do anything with it again. The fact that DIDN’T happen proved it was far from dead.

Yes it did.

The failure of Enterprise is what got the studio to stop producing new Star Trek tv shows, and reboot the franchise with the Kelvin films. That is a stone cold fact.

People, stop arguing semantics, and living in fairy dust land.

Dude the fact that you mentioned that they rebooted the franchise with the Kelvin movies proves they didn’t kill Star Trek lol. It didn’t GO ANYWHERE, they simply did something different with it a few years later. I’m not arguing ‘semantics’ if something is DEAD, we wouldn’t see ANY version of it for a long long time. And they certainly wouldn’t pour $150 million into something you supposedly ‘killed off’ just a year ago.

I get tired of this bizarre argument. If you want to argue Enterprise killed off Berman’s era of it, then YES, that would be more accurate. But Star Trek as a franchise was still going; hence this website being made in 2006. Funny how you create a website for something that was supposedly killed off a year before. ;)

“Dude” the fact that you seem to have a skewed interpretation of what “killed” mean is not my problem. It ended Trek on TV for well over a decade. End of story. You’re wrong. Highly suggest you just move along.

I’m saying is CBS MADE the choice to keep it off the air, not there was not rampant interest from fans and other networks to want another show, that’s all.

People act like no one wanted any more Star Trek because Enterprise got cancelled. That was NEVER the case and to say it killed off a franchise is HIGHLY misleading when they multiple big budge films a few years later.

But OK, this is starting to feel like splitting hairs. You have your view, I have mine. So no hard feelings.

I’d chalk it up to studio politics and the split of Viacom. And the failure of UPN itself. But the viewership lagged on Enterprise by its end, the show was expensive to produce. Still its nowhere the failure Nemesis was. Enterprise can be proud of its final season as long as you don’t mention these are the voyages. I sat in a near empty theater on the day Nemesis opened if you can even say it opened. The film was so misguided, poorly written and ill advised, sloppily edited and directed its shocking. the only thing that was good was the cast chemistry and Data’s death was handled well. The Special Effects were good, the score was good. But it was a colossal failure. TNG ended on a whimper. I wish they had a strong final entry like Star Trek VI had been for the original cast.

Nemesis killed Trek on film. Enterprise’s killed it on TV.

Voyager was getting a 4.7 Neilsen rating in its final season on UPN, with the finale spiking to over 8. Enterprise was hovering around 2.7 for most of its final year, topping out at 3.8 for its finale.

Lots of reasons for this, but it cannot be denied that the biggest reason was that audiences and critics alike did not respond to it in the way they had for previous Trek shows, and it would be the height of revisionist history to say it was a great show cancelled before its time.

I liked Enterprise. I’ve appreciated it more in the years since, and i’d love to see a miniseries revival for sure; but it was still not a great show, and has a lot of very serious flaws.

But those ratings would still have been the highest, or at worst least second or third highest ratings on The CW. I’m not saying Enterprise was a great show, but I do think it was canceled before its time. It was canceled largely because it didn’t fit in with The CW’s female-centric programming. Sure, it was more expensive than the other CW shows, but it also has a much greater return, still drawing in good numbers on Netflix, Hulu, etc., fifteen years later (what else from WB/CW is even close, Gilmore Girls maybe?).

By that time your at 15+Years of constant Trek on TV and the movies since TNG started. People besides the most core fans had become apathetic to the IP. It needed the break. Will see how long this new run can last.

You’re arguing over the “why” which is beside the point. The point is, critical and audience reaction was modest at best, that is not arguable. The point is, ratings were not good enough to justify continuing, that is not arguable. The network acknowledged that ratings were to blame for cancellation. End of story.

This revisionist history is becoming laughable.

a) Critic and audience reaction to Supernatural was modest at best, too. It went 16 years.

b) The ratings were comparable to those of its contemporary Battlestar Galactica , which continued several more years.

c) What network? Paramount was killing off UPN. The new network was The CW, which was heavily targeted at the female audience, and the only UPN show to make the transition was America’s Next Top Model .

This isn’t revisionist. I questioned Paramount’s motives at the time, too. There was a lot more happening behind the scenes. Had the CBS/Paramount split not happened, would Enterprise have been canceled? I think that highly unlikely.

Reports of Star Trek’s death are greatly exaggerated…..

Enterprise killed Trek for a time. Sad, but true. Thankfully, JJ Abrams resurrected it. And that’s why his contribution to the franchise– love him or hate him– should not be understated. Who knows how long it would have taken for someone else to attempt to revive it, or what such a revival might have looked like, or if it would have been successful at all.

I’ve been hearing fans say Star Trek was dead ever since TNG aired…

I am under the slight impression phlox wanted a bit sex. But could I be totally wrong.

I did a complete series re-watch last year and really enjoyed it. Season 3 was for me the best of the 4 seasons and like many, I thought that the series finale (while well-intentioned) was a complete misfire and not good way to conclude an otherwise enjoyable series.

Agreed with mostly everything you said. I actually did a complete rewatch of the show this year starting on New Year’s day (I’m doing a complete rewatch of the franchise as a whole) and it was the first time I watched the show from beginning to end since I first watched it and I really loved it. What was interesting is that every season got stronger than the last for me. I thought season 2 was nearly as strong as season 3 actually. Season 4 is without a doubt my favorite.

But yes the finale still stunk to high heaven. I don’t hate it as much as I first watched it but still very very bad. What were they thinking????

But Enterprise has aged very well IMO and I like it more today much more than when it originally came on. And I definitely like it more than DIS and PIC so far, without a doubt.

Good points Tiger 2. Like you I’m also doing a complete rewatch of Trek as a whole and have finished, TAS, Enterprise, TNG, DS9 and I’m midway through the final season of Voyager. I agree that Enterprise has aged well and it being available in HD (as opposed to soft and fuzzy SD) enhanced my watching experience. An enjoyable and charismatic cast and in particular I thought Blalock did a great job throughout, bringing a great deal of subtlety to many of her scenes.

I still maintain that the framing device in the finale is not the problem with the episode. Even if you take Riker, Troi, and the Enterprise-D out, the episode is, at best, an average season 2 kind of story. And a series– nay, an ERA finale– demands something more.

A mission to rescue Shran’s child is meaningless as a series capper. Had the show been a 2 hour story about the penultimate mission that ended the Romulan War– where Earth, Vulcan, Tellar, and Andoria teamed up to defeat the Romulans– leading to the founding of the Federation– you could have still included a post credits type scene with a group of crew members of the previous 90s shows, discussing the history of the original Enterprise. Maybe they’re at a Starfleet Academy Ceremony honoring the 200th Anniversary of Archer’s mission/signing/whatever, you get Riker, Troi, O’Brien, Bashir, Paris, Kim, et al at a banquet afterward discussing the original Enterprise’s legacy, without intruding on or minimizing the main story.

It’s great to hear when others are doing a complete rewatch as well. I have never done it before and just sort of decided to do it on a whim a few days before I started, mostly because I was already watching a lot of Trek and home ALL the time lol. But I’ve gotten through 3/4ths of the franchise now starting with ENT and finished TOS, TAS, DIS (first two seasons) and TNG. I’m literally on the final 10 episodes of season seven of DS9 and the last five of season 5 of VOY (watching them concurrently). Once I’m done with VOY though the rest will be a breeze lol.

As for ENT, I have really gone to appreciate it so much and found myself constantly rewatching episodes. It is a flawed show for sure (but you can say that about all of them) but in time the positives just started to weigh out the negatives for me and I just really grew to love the characters a lot. Ironically I really didn’t like T’Pol in the beginning and she really put me off the show when it originally started. But she ended up having not only one of best arcs on the show but in the franchise in general. She still seems to be a divisive character in some circles but I really love T’Pol and Blalock played her well. Her and Archer’s relationship really defined the show for me as well.

And another thing, you can tell just how much of a turnaround the show has had because look at this board. It’s like 99% positive about the show. So many people seem to love it now and a lot of people want it back in some form. Twenty years ago I would say the opposite lol. But it proves when it comes to Star Trek it does age like a fine wine more times than not.

In twenty years time people will be begging for more Discovery and how much they miss that show too. ;)

The cancelation was disappointing because the show was indeed getting better with every season. They managed a very good 24 episode season long story arc (proving that Trek is indeed capable of doing those in spite of the current evidence) and really found their way in season 4. I think the shows biggest problem was a miscast Scott Bakula. But I think they were doing about as good as they could with him, even though the part would have been better if another actor were cast.

I like to think of the penultimate episode as the actual series finale. I have the show on BD but I don’t watch TATV. I just can’t. It’s that bad.

The Novels about the romulan war and the beginning of the Federation should being picturized !

Highly underrated show. Felt more real as it felt they characters weren’t as perfectly formed especially as it was much closer to our future…

The post 9/11 stuff has dated a little though. Was a little to amercanised for my liking. America is not the world as Morrissey once said!

If you’re looking to Morrissey for lessons about politics, you’re probably a fascist.

Not to mention that 9/11 was a globally recognized tragedy that affected the entire world; but it’s affect on America and its collective psyche was monumental, and after all, Trek IS an American TV show.

Someone mentioned the idea of having an animated season 5 of ENT and I really like that idea. I really have come to appreciate this show and it’s cast and there’s so much more that could be done with the characters and story. I know it’s wishful thinking but I think I’d be a great way to finish out the journey in a more meaningful way.

Maybe it could be called… Archer.

So, the facination with the MU would have been a part of season five. They should just do a series there and go balls to the wall with it. If it flies, it flies.

I would give anything to see a season 5. I know it will never happen but that would make my year. Enterprise certainly had its flaws, especially in the early season but like most Star Trek shows it improved immensely by the end. If it went 7 seasons like the others it may have been one of my top 3 shows and I’m not a huge fan of prequels at all.

I like the finale. Not so much as an Enterprise episode, mind you, but it’s a decent TNG episode.

Really? That big build-up to Archer’s speech, and then we don’t hear it?

Sure, that was a bad idea. However, I like the episode for what IS there (other than Tripp being killed, which was garbage) more than I dislike it for what isn’t.

Yeah that was so annoying. It would’ve been at least a good idea to end it on Archer’s speech signifying the birth of the Federation. That would’ve been so symbolic and a really nice way to end not just the show but the 18 year era of the franchise. Instead we hear Riker telling the computer to end program. (sigh)

I like them not showing the speech. That episode has a lot of flaws, but no speech they could write would ever live up to the fan’s expectations. I think having it end on his walking up to the stage was the right choice, dramatically, story-wise, and just for the good of the franchise.

Also, the truncated speech was symbolic of the truncated end of ENT overall. Furthermore, we had just come off Archer’s closing speech in “Terra Prime,” which I think gave us the flavor of what the Founding speech would have been like.

I suppose that’s one way to look at it. At least Moriarty wasn’t running amuck in that episode. ‘End program’ is just a touch…ironic.

I also am very unhappy with the finally. Trips death was not nessessary for one. The story line of saving the andorian child was weak but the TNG hollow deck senerio belittled Enterprise’s final send off. As far as the Archer’s speach, it’s probably true nothing could be written that would hold up to fan expectation. I think though Archer could of addressed the crowd of future federation members with something about Coming together in an alliance and their common goal while leading into the Space, the final frontier… Recited by the cast. No Riker, no Troy no Enterprise D. and computer end program.

I don’t much enjoy the mirror universe episodes, either. When TOS did it, it was a fresh concept. When DS9 and ENT did it, it was just a gimmick. The stories relied heavily on the mirror concept and weren’t intrinsically interesting or compelling. If you take the mirror concept out of “Through a Mirror Darkly,” what’s left is a mundane story about good guys and bad guys. On top of that, nothing that happens to the mirror characters matters in the end. I’ve never understood the appeal of “Through a Mirror….”, and if that’s the best of what Coto had in mind for a Season 5 of ENT, then I can’t say I’m too upset about it not having materialized. I would hope that if a Season 5 of ENT had happened, it would have been more interesting than going back to the mirror universe well.

I tend to agree. But as MU episodes go Enterprise did the best job after the original. From what I can tell IAMD started out as a vehicle for a potential Shatner guest star. When that fell though they still stayed with the concept.

Bill Shatner has outlasted them all . He doesn’t need mirror tricks , he could play the Captain who has outlived/outlasted them all , to opine back over the life of his compatriots .

Actually the Enterprise MU episodes are my favorite out of all of them. They are just fun and love the way they connected it to TOS. I recently rewatched all the DS9 MU episodes and I do like most of them but yeah they got less good as they went and the last one was just plain horrible IMO. I have no idea why would you end a 5 episode arc on Quark saving the Nagus…again.

‘shattered mirror’ does have a glorious battle scene with the MU defiant.

As they say in Hollywood , ‘It’s Been Done !’ . It’s the Hack Hollywood Executives responsible for this staple in Satr Trek .

Interesting style choices by the cast , Keaton has…that happening and quite the hair by Montgomery.

We saw these guys on the stage at the con. They never disappoint, that’s for sure. While I was off to the side standing in line for an autograph from Isa Briones. I could hear my wife shout “We love you!” In which Dom replied, “We love you too!” It is just a huge laugh fest when you have JB on the panel. That man has a great comedic talent in his own way, he can go on and on, like the late Robin Williams could do.

I’m not a big fan of the MU but this show did the best job of it of the other shows that went there. DS9’s first foray into it was kinda OK but the others really changed it and what it was originally presented as being. Enterprise did a much better job of it. That said had they done a 5th season my preference would have been for them to leave the MU alone.

Regarding the finale… I tend to agree that it wasn’t the fact that Trip was killed. It was what he died for. He died so his Captain could get to a ceremony in time to make a speech? Are you kidding? And then there’s the whole TNG intrusion of Riker & Troi. Which was just completely out of place.

This show gets a bad rap. Really wish they got their 5th season. Most of the ideas I heard from Coto sounded fun. Among them he was going to do a Starbase 1 story and a story at Stratos.

Did Dominic Keating not say anything on the panel? He seems to have been left out of this story.

Looks like Scott’s running to reboot “QL”, not “Enterprise” and where is Jolene? Did she really quit acting like Robin Curtis did? Did I just waste my time trying to promote the return of “Enterprise” or what? I hope not. By the time, “QL” finishes, the actors will decide they really are too old and new actors will have to be recast. Just please dont let JJ Abrams recast them if there’s a chance 3+ seasons could be redone. I want the original actors to return! And stick with Manny Coto.

Star Trek: Enterprise - Why the Series Ended After Four Seasons

Star Trek: Enterprise ended after four seasons, but the reasons why had more to do with Hollywood than the show itself.

Over its four season run,   Star Trek: Enterprise endured a great deal of controversy and was sometimes regarded as a weak link in the Star Trek franchise. Time has revealed its qualities, and Trekkies retain a strong affection for it. But the fact Enterprise  ended after only four seasons -- instead of seven like the previous three Star Trek series -- remains a mark against it in certain parts of the fanbase, resulting in questions as to why it ended.

The truth is multiple factors contributed to the series’ early departure, including a change of management at Paramount and a perceived oversaturation of the franchise. It had a detrimental effect on the end of the series, which didn’t help its reputation. But the confluence of reasons for Enterprise's  cancellation had little to do with the show itself.

How Star Trek: Enterprise Ended

star trek enterprise ending reddit

Enterprise  ended on a bad note. The infamous series finale “These Are The Voyages...” time jumps three years forward from the previous episode -- a necessity in order to align with the previously established date for the founding of the Federation -- jarring audiences and leaving the story very detached. An arbitrary death for fan-favorite Trip Tucker didn't help matters, but perhaps the biggest misstep entailed framing the entire affair as a holodeck program being run by Will Riker during the events of  Star Trek: The Next Generation S eason 7, Episode 12, "The Pegasus." Jonathan Frakes originally shot that episode over a decade before "These Are The Voyages..." leaving him far too old for the character as presented.

Enterprise 's collective exhaustion reflected a more breathless fourth season in general. For instance, the Xindi were being groomed as major villains in Season 3 but failed to catch fire and barely made a ripple in Season 4. Instead, Enterprise  went to shorter arcs that tied the series more closely to the remainder of Star Trek , including a stint in the Mirror Universe and an encounter with Noonian Soong. They worked, but they also felt crowded together as the kinds of stories that needed 2 to 3 seasons to breathe. The finale's rushed storyline and awkward attempts to fit a fictional timeline into the hard limits of reality, all reflected badly on a show that deserved a better ending.

Why Star Trek: Enterprise Was Canceled

ENTERPRISE MIRROR STAR TREK

Enterprise faced challenges from the beginning simply because it did something different with Star Trek by depicting a more compromised galaxy before the Federation was founded. That necessitated changes to the formula, including the infamous theme song, which had a negative impact on ratings. Had ratings been stronger, the show might have been better protected. But big moves behind the scenes at Paramount -- and at UPN, the network running Enterprise at the time -- caused significant problems.

It started when CBS President Mel Katzman resigned in May 2004 (during Enterprise’s third season) over differences with CBS’s parent company, Viacom. That resulted in a wave of resignations throughout the summer of 2004 , including several executives key to Star Trek . Enterprise was renewed for a fourth season but placed in a Friday-night time slot: an infamous dead zone that killed Star Trek: The Original Series after only three seasons. Without more defenders in the boardroom, the show was in trouble.

RELATED:  Star Trek: The Original Series - Why Season 3 Dropped in Quality

In an interview with Syfy , producer Rick Berman cites another cause of the show’s end as franchise fatigue. Enterprise came at the tail end of four rolling Star Trek shows, often with two series running at the same time. The Star Trek: The Next Generation movie franchise had crashed and burned with 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis , which was met with poor reviews and disappointing box office returns.

With the deck stacked so badly against it, Enterprise had little choice but to end after Season 4. Star Trek remained largely on hiatus after that until the Kelvinverse reboot in 2009. Unfortunately, fans and creators alike felt the show had just hit its stride, and a promised Season 5 contained a number of exciting notions that were never realized. Though Enterprise 's reputation has improved over time (including active references in both the Kelvinverse and Star Trek: Lower Decks )   its current status is a silver lining in the wake of a cancellation that might have been beyond its ability to prevent.

Why did Enterprise get such a lousy ending? We now know…

For years, both fans and friends of the show, Star Trek: Enterprise , have complained about the series finale. To pretty much everyone, the last episode of the show, “These Are the Voyages…” was kind of a let down. Instead of the big speech by Captain Archer, which essentially started the Federation, we saw Riker and Troi end the holodeck program and walk out.

The final episode was written by  Enterprise  co-creators Rick Berman and Brannon Braga, and it aired on May 13, 2005. Unlike the other recent Trek finales, “These Are the Voyages…” was not an epic two-parter. It was a normal length episode. It was Berman who was the Trek czar at Paramount after creator Gene Roddenberry died, and oversaw The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , Voyager , and Enterprise .

The show gave us a few hints of where the crew would go after the end of the series, Hoshi Sato (Linda Park) was headed to Brazil, while Trip Tucker (Connor Trinneer) tragically died in a closet. Sadly, Trip sacrificed himself to save Archer.

“It’s shocking how much wrong they managed to pack into one normal-sized episode of television,” said Phil Pirrello of the  Hollywood Reporter .

The fans were not happy, and neither were the stars of Enterprise , who felt that they too were robbed of a good ending. Trinneer said the cast was “hurt” by the ending. “We were all, as a cast, disappointed,” he told Trek Today back in 2005 .

Still to this day, fans are not happy with the way Enterprise ended:

Comments from “Trekkie Geek”

“These Are the Voyages…” was so disliked, that some claim it was the reason there was no Star Trek until the J.J. Abrams reboot in 2009 .

So why did the creators make “These Are the Voyages…” end the way it did? We now know why, thanks to a recent episode of the Inglorious Treksperts podcast .

The Treksperts, Mark A. Altman and Daren Dochterman, hosted Manny Coto on their show. Coto was the Enterprise Season Four showrunner, and knew exactly why Enterprise ended the way it did.

When asked about “These Are the Voyages…” this is what Coto said:

“Brannon and Rick wanted to do a finale for the entire run of all their shows. That was what they wanted to do. I kind of always look at ‘Demons’ and ‘Terra Prime’ as the finale for Enterprise , and they were going to do the finale for the whole thing. That was the thinking.”

So, instead of an ending featuring just the cast of Enterprise , Rick Berman and Brannon Braga made an ending which they considered was the ending of an era. Even though many are upset with what happened, Berman and Braga did it their way to mark the end of their involvement in running Trek.

“Demons” and “Terra Prime” were episodes 20 and 21 of Enterprise ’s Season Four, and “These Are the Voyages…” followed.

Star trek: 10 unpopular opinions about enterprise (according to reddit).

It was only a matter of time before the famed ship got its own Star Trek spin-off, Enterprise, which takes place 100 years before the original series.

Ever since Star Trek was released as a series in 1979, one of the biggest stars of the franchise has been the Starship Enterprise. Sweeping and grand, the Enterprise has been a staple, and like all franchise staples, the ship has garnered all sorts of popular and unpopular opinions about it.

So it was only a matter of time before the famed ship got its own Star Trek spin-off,  Enterprise , which takes place 100 years before the events that would unfold in the original series. Everyone has their opinion on the show and a great place to check out both the bold and questionable viewpoints of the series is to look at what's being said about it on Reddit.

Enterprise Was Better Than People Thought

star trek enterprise ending reddit

During its run on UPN between 2001-and-2005, Enterprise received mixed to poor critical reviews. While the series did last four seasons and nearly 100 episodes, it didn't achieve the classic fame of its predecessors . This Reddit user, however, went back and watched the entire series and posted an entire video to the Reddit tab explaining why the series was much better than many may have thought back in its heyday.

The comments beneath the video seem to back up this user's claim, with many saying that the opening theme was what killed its potential. Despite that, however, it wasn't enough to kill the series as it did have a serviceable life on network television.

Enterprise Is "The Most 2004 Thing Ever"

star trek enterprise ending reddit

For Reddit users looking back on what most deem the "forgotten" Star Trek installment, Enterprise is characterized as a product of its time . After 9/11, there was a sense of hyper-nationalism that broke out all over America, and it seeped into the television landscape at the time, with Enterprise absorbing some of that nationalism.

Then again, as Reddit user Zenzonomy pointed out, all Star Trek series and films have incorporated the politics of its era into its production, and Enterprise was essentially no different.

That Transporter Pad Made Little Sense

star trek enterprise ending reddit

Whenever the show zoomed in on the Transporter Pad, it was nothing but random numbers that didn't make any sense to the viewer. That's what a Reddit user pointed out when he took a screenshot of the pad , pointing out how random the numbers were and how they had no rhyme-nor-reason to them.

One user, Voicesinmyhead, even questioned why they would put the auxiliary controls on the top left when that's where the primary controls went? It's little Easter eggs like these that only diehard Star Trek fans would get.

Captain Archer Is A Shouter

star trek enterprise ending reddit

When you watch Enterprise for the first time, you'll recognize immediately that Captain Jonathan Archer is no Captain Picard or Kirk. A Reddit user pointed out that Captain Archer is a shouter , as it seemed he would shout all of his lines in a non-aggressive way, even if he was right there next to the person.

Many commenters compared it to the famous Dr. McCoy from the original Star Trek , who would often go head-to-head with Spock, ending with his now-famous catchphrase - "I'm a Doctor, not a__!:

Mediocre For A Star Trek Series

star trek enterprise ending reddit

How did Enterprise fare with the other iconic shows from the franchise? Judging from Reddit user Breggen, it was surprisingly mediocre for it to be part of the Star Trek universe . "It seems like it was both out of place for a Star Trek intro and out of time for TV in general," the user wrote, speaking of, you guessed it, the intro.

RELATED: Star Trek: Every Pet Kept On A Starship (So Far)

For many, the intro to Enterprise was what brought the entire series down. If it would have stuck to the original theme replicated in the other iconic series such as The Next Generation and Voyager , Enterprise could have had a chance to be among the best Star Trek series out there.

"Singularity" Was A Truly Wasted Episode

star trek enterprise ending reddit

In Season Two of Enterprise , an episode titled "Singularity" landed, but for Reddit users, the episode represented a missed opportunity with its premise, which observes the crew obsessing over small matters while exploring a black hole in the trinary star system.

Instead of focusing on the current dilemma, the episode was told in a flashback, which this Reddit user described as a "forgettable in-and-out-the-soup formula plot." Instead, the user countered, the episode's producers could have given the storyline more meat, which wouldn't have necessitated a flashback at all.

Poorly Acted And Flat Storylines

star trek enterprise ending reddit

As the first Star Trek series to appear in the 21st century, Enterprise took on a more new-modern tone than its predecessors. One reason, according to Reddit user JobSnoWight , why the show may have been poorly received during its original run was because of the poor acting and flat-as-a-pancake storylines.

"I tried Enterprise once before, but couldn't get past some of the poor acting and the storyline of the pilot fell flat for me," the user wrote. The pilot episode can make-or-break a series, and which the pilot was flat, it wasn't as bad for most viewers as it ran for five seasons.

The Theme Song Was Great

star trek enterprise ending reddit

The one complaint you'll run into while scrolling the Enterprise Reddit is the show's theme song. Eschewing from tradition, Star Trek: Enterprise went with a more modern theme, which upset some hardcore Trekkies.

However, you will find some fans that actually liked the theme song, like user Mossasharqi, who thought the theme was great , at least for the first two seasons. In Season Three, he wasn't a fan. "They kept the lyrics but changed the music to sound more upbeat and upbeat." He went on to mention that the cheery opening belied the arch of the season, in which Earth was on the verge of being destroyed.

The Opening Theme Is The Worst In History

star trek enterprise ending reddit

While you may find some who will like the theme song, there are many who absolutely hate it, with some Reddit users going as far as calling it one of the worst in history. That was the assessment from user BlindSpotGuy, who had a lot of love for Enterprise  but deeply resented the theme .

"I have to say, while I love the show, it has THE WORST opening theme song, EVER," he wrote. As mentioned earlier, the theme from Enterpriser strode away from the classic Star Trek theme, which turned off a lot of fans.

Enterprise Is The Best Star Trek Series

star trek enterprise ending reddit

Thanks to its revival on Netflix, Enterprise is getting a second appraisal from Trekkies, and it's passing the test. In fact, some have called it the best Star Trek series on right now. That was the assessment from Reddit user Lord Kermit Frog, who had this to say about the show:

"I find Enterprise to be the best of the current Star Trek shows," the user wrote, adding that the pre-federation timeline and other story and plot lines unique to Enterprise is what makes it so unique within the Star Trek universe.

‘Star Trek: Enterprise’ Was Doomed To Fail From the Start

A unique entry in the Star Trek franchise faced its own Kobayashi Maru.

The Big Picture

  • Star Trek: Enterprise explored a time period before the Federation, showcasing early space exploration by humans in the Star Trek universe.
  • Despite a bumpy start with controversial changes like a non-instrumental theme song, the show gained traction in its later seasons with new storylines.
  • Star Trek: Enterprise's cancellation after 4 seasons was attributed to a variety of factors, including low viewership amid franchise fatigue.

September 2001 brought a new Star Trek series to television, which followed the adventures of the crew aboard the first starship Enterprise , led by Captain Jonathan Archer ( Scott Bakula ). Appropriately titled Star Trek: Enterprise , the series explores the time period before the founding of the Federation. It was a refreshing take for the Star Trek franchise, spotlighting an era that had not been present on screen to any large degree, even including Star Trek: First Contact which takes place long before Star Trek: Enterprise .

However, the fresh take on the Star Trek franchise didn't help, and Star Trek: Enterprise was cancelled after only four seasons . While there wasn't a single reason for its cancellation, it could be argued that the series had engaged in its own Kobayashi Maru simulation due to its own ambitions. With that in mind, beam aboard as we look at the ill-fated voyage of Star Trek: Enterprise .

Star Trek: Enterprise

A century before Captain Kirk's five-year mission, Jonathan Archer captains the United Earth ship Enterprise during the early years of Starfleet, leading up to the Earth-Romulan War and the formation of the Federation.

'Star Trek: Enterprise' Tried to Be Different

Star Trek: Enterprise introduces the first iteration of the famed starship, designation NX-01 , 100 years prior to Star Trek: The Original Series . This Enterprise lacks the bells and whistles that its kin are outfitted with, like grappler cables instead of a tractor beam, and missiles instead of particle weapons. The starship is the first vessel capable of warp five, and its crew the first deep space explorers in Starfleet . What we learn is that the Vulcans, who first made contact with humanity in the aforementioned Star Trek: First Contact , have been slow in introducing even more advanced technology, fearing that humans are not prepared. Without the help of the Vulcans, human space exploration has progressed slowly, something that doesn't sit well with test pilot Jonathan Archer, described as a "dedicated and bold captain with a dash of space-cowboy flair" with a curious hint of prejudice toward Vulcans. Joining Archer is Commander Trip Tucker ( Connor Trinneer ) and Sub-commander T'Pol ( Jolene Blalock ). The series, as a whole, went from documenting first encounters with Star Trek mainstays Klingons and Andorians to laying the groundwork for what would eventually become the Federation.

For a series that aimed to dramatize the events that would be the genesis of all the franchise entries to follow on the timeline, Star Trek: Enterprise didn't exactly endear itself to Trekkers off the bat . For the first two seasons, the series broke from tradition by dropping the Star Trek prefix, and was simply titled Enterprise . The series also declined to use an instrumental theme, a long-time staple of the franchise that began with the iconic theremin-heavy opening of the original series . Instead, the Diane Warren -penned power ballad "Faith of the Heart," sung by Russell Watson , played over the opening credits. That decision was greeted with vitriol by the Star Trek fanbase , with one online petition saying, ”We wish to express our unmitigated disgust with the theme song that has been selected for the new ‘Enterprise’ series. It is not fit to be scraped off the bottom of a Klingon’s boot.”

What Happened to the 'Madame Web' Director's Star Trek Movie?

'star trek: enterprise' couldn't find an identity.

Star Trek: Enterprise started strong , attracting 12.5 million viewers on its UPN debut on Sept. 26, 2001 . The first two seasons were largely comprised of stand-alone episodes, which Jolene Blalock assessed as boring, ignored basic tenets of the franchise's choronology, and pushed revealing costumes over character development. It resulted in a lack of engagement from viewers, and by the end of Season 1, half the audience had jumped ship, and by the end of Season 2, only a third of the original viewers were still on board.

In the hopes of stopping the bleeding, producers changed gears for its third season, added the Star Trek prefix, and introduced a single, yearlong storyline that saw the ship's crew up against the Xindi, a malevolent alien race. Manny Coto , the man behind Odyssey 5 , was made co-executive producer and made an immediate impact, with episodes that fans and TV insiders hailed as, finally, up to Star Trek snuff. As per the previously cited New York Times , the improvements didn't help, and viewers continued to abandon ship. By Season 4 , show runners had pretty much thrown in the towel. "When it was time to start the writing for Season 4," Coto said, "we were mostly gearing episodes towards people who knew the 'Star Trek' universe. We were not worried so much about people who didn't. They were gone anyway." And on May 13, 2005, UPN pulled the plug and cancelled Star Trek: Enterprise .

'Star Trek: Enterprise's Fate Was Sealed

Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) stands in a hallway on the USS Enterprise

Low viewership would be the obvious answer as to why Star Trek: Enterprise got the axe, but far from the only reason . There was legitimate Star Trek fatigue, with Star Trek: Enterprise as the last of a continual run of Star Trek as a TV series that had started back in 1988 with Star Trek: The Next Generation . The franchise also took a heavy hit at the box office, with 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis a major disappointment , for much the same reason. Airing on a fringe station like UPN was another factor that played against the series, with a total viewership well below the big networks .

The series did have its fans, however, and certainly deserved a better sendoff than the series finale "These Are the Voyages..." The episode was fashioned as a "lost episode" of Star Trek: TNG , circa Season 7 episode "The Pegasus." In the much-maligned finale, Commander Riker (Frakes) uses the holodeck to solve his problems by viewing the final mission of Captain Archer and crew aboard the NX-01 Enterprise . In a nutshell, all the 22nd century scenes with the cast of Enterprise are all holodeck simulations, turning the characters that fans devoted four seasons to into guest stars on their own show, in favor of two actual guest stars from TNG ( Marina Sirtis ' Troi also appears) who are the primary focus. It was a slap in the face to a cast that tried their damnedest for four years to make Star Trek: Enterprise worthy of the Trek franchise. Scott Bakula was so angered over the story that he got confrontational with writer-producer Brannon Braga . While Star Trek: Enterprise will never be hailed as a Trekker favorite, it stands as one of the few times that the Star Trek franchise has tried something unique and fresh. For that reason alone, it deserves to be celebrated.

Star Trek Should Remove Section 31 From The Timeline, Says Fan

  • The upcoming Star Trek: Section 31 movie has sparked fan discussion and high expectations due to the enigmatic nature of the organization.
  • Some fans are unhappy with the addition of Section 31 to Star Trek canon and propose that the movie should dismantle and remove the organization from the timeline.
  • The success of the project lies in delivering a compelling end to Section 31, as trying to redeem the concept within one film would be a monumental task. Fan concern over franchise fatigue is also a factor to consider.

The Star Trek: Section 31 movie has a lot of fan expectations attached to it, and one critical social media user has an ironic request for the writers of the upcoming project that could have far-reaching consequences on the Star Trek canon.

Many in the Star Trek universe and even longtime fans don’t know what the enigmatic Section 31 is , and that’s just how the organization likes it. Featured across several episodes of Star Trek TV and in novels and comics, Section 31 is the shadowy arm of the utopian Federation that delves into dark and questionable activity to safeguard the Federation and its reputation. CBS announced a series based around the organization in 2019, which has since been reworked into a feature film made for Paramount Plus and fueled quite a lot of fan discussion.

While Section 31 has retroactively become integral to some of the most important moments in Starfleet history , some fans aren’t happy about the addition anymore, and at least one fan on social media has a radical idea about how the upcoming Star Trek: Section 31 film can rectify the situation. Reddit user silly-er took to r/startrek to express their radical proposition for the film, boldly stating it with the post title “The Section 31 movie should take down the org and remove it from the timeline” and giving a breakdown of the issue. “Section 31 was an interesting and provocative idea when they introduced it in DS9. Since then, in Discovery and Picard, Section 31 has worn out it's welcome (for me). They very nearly eliminated it at the end of Discovery S2, but left us with "reform" that obviously didn't work.” The user then bluntly proffered a solution that the project's writers could use.

The new Section 31 movie will ideally involve the disassembly of the Section 31 organization from the inside, by our favorite agent. Maybe in the early 25th century? And then when the deed is done, we can never speak of it again

There are several ways that Star Trek has Influenced the real world , and vice versa, and the idea of Section 31 was an ambitious attempt at integrating a vaguely real-world concept into the demonstrably utopian world of Star Trek 's Federation. While the idea of deconstructing the Federation’s idyllic exterior face has been done from time to time with some success and weight behind it, the existence of Section 31 might have taken it too far. Fans will be glad the feature-length project can deliver a compelling end to the organization. Moreso, it seems to be the path of least resistance, as trying to redeem the idea within the runtime of one film is bound to be a herculean task beyond the scope of a straight-to-streaming project.

Standing over the concerns with the Section 31 project is the fan concern that Star Trek might make the same mistakes as Star Wars with its massive slate of Spin-offs and projects that may not reflect fans' interests. Fatigue is a real issue with any large franchise in the streaming era, and this upcoming project might be another step toward the edge of the abyss for Star Trek if the writers don’t pull off an impressive feat .

Star Trek: Section 31 will be released on Paramount Plus.

Star Trek is a space exploration franchise created by Gene Roddenberry. The series has spanned shows like The Original Series, The Next Generation, and Voyager. More recently, developer Scopely came out with Star Trek Fleet Command, a mobile title where you can be captain of your ship.

Star Trek Should Remove Section 31 From The Timeline, Says Fan

What Happened To Scott Bakula's Captain Jonathan Archer On Star Trek?

Captain Archer smiling

"Star Trek: Enterprise" Captain Jonathan Archer (played by Scott Bakula) might not have been as refined and diplomatic as Captain Jean-Luc Picard ( Patrick Stewart ) of the Starship Enterprise or as cool under pressure as Deep Space Nine's Commanding Officer Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks). But as a pioneer of Terran interstellar exploration, Archer proves himself to be one of the most influential figures in the "Star Trek" universe. The son of warp five engineer Henry Archer (Mark Moses), Jonathan grows up to be a vocal advocate for Earth's journey into space while captaining a ship his father helped to design.

Despite the Vulcan Council's efforts to delay Earth's entry into the world of space exploration, a diplomatic near-crisis involving the Klingons gave Archer the opportunity he'd been waiting for, forcing Starfleet to launch the Enterprise much earlier than planned. With a crew Archer put together in a matter of days, the captain would lead Starfleet's first warp-powered interstellar space exploration mission. With his trusty dog Porthos by his side and one of the spiciest crews in "Star Trek," Archer would face off with Klingons, get caught up in a temporal cold war, and form one of the hottest bromances this side of the Alpha Quadrant. Even after his return home, Archer wasn't through carving his name into Starfleet history. After signing the charter that would lead to the eventual creation of the United Federation of Planets, Archer is made admiral, embarks on a long political career, and eventually helps christen James T. Kirk's Enterprise.

How Archer helped build the Federation

As recounted aboard the holodeck by Riker (Jonathan Frakes) in the "Enterprise" series finale, "These are the Voyages...," Archer retires in 2161 before signing the Federation charter. Although "Enterprise" ends with Archer's retirement, the two-parter "In a Mirror, Darkly" gives some pretty big spoilers, as revealed when mirror universe Hoshi (Linda Park) reads through Starfleet records while aboard the prime universe ship the Defiant. Since the Tholians brought the ship over from 100 years in the prime universe future, alt-Hoshi, and alt-Archer are able to read a complete history of their prime universe counterparts. According to those records, prime Archer "earned an impressive list of commendations during his career," with historians declaring him "the greatest explorer of the 22nd century." Starfleet records also reveal that Archer has two planets named after him.

Although alternate Archer cuts her off, eagle-eyed viewers who screencap the computer screen Hoshi is reading from can get a complete history of Archer's post-Enterprise days. After his time aboard the Enterprise, he earns the rank of Admiral and becomes Chief of Staff at Starfleet Command before his retirement. He also serves as a prominent ambassador for several years and works as a Federation Councilman before getting elected to the United Federation of Planets presidency in 2184.

In 2245, he attends the NCC-1701's christening, before peacefully dying the following day. With so many productive post-spacefaring years during the foundational years of the Federation, a growing contingent of fans have said they would like to see Paramount create a "Star Trek" series that follows Archer through his political career. Such a series could focus on the growing pains of humanity's evolution to the more enlightened post-scarcity world we see in "Star Trek: The Original Series."

Reddit , the popular internet discussion “community of communities,” filed a registration statement Thursday for its long-awaited initial public offering.

The number of shares to be offered and the price range for the proposed offering have not yet been determined. Reddit intends to list its Class A common stock on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol “RDDT.”

In the S-1 filing with the SEC , Reddit reported 2023 revenue of $804.0 million, up 21% year over year, and a net loss of $90.8 million in 2023, compared with a $158.6 million loss the year prior.

In an unusual move, Reddit is giving users who have “meaningfully contributed to Reddit community programs” — including moderators — the chance to buy shares in the company at the IPO price. That’s a privilege normally reserved for employees, “friends and family” or investors.

According to Reddit, users and moderators who created an account on or before Jan. 1, 2024, are potentially eligible for the directed share program. Those will be invited to participate in six phased “priority tiers,” based on that participant’s contributions to Reddit. Shares purchased through the directed share program will not be subject to the terms of the lock-up agreement or market standoff restrictions.

“I have never been more excited about Reddit’s future than I am right now,” Reddit CEO Steve Huffman wrote in the S-1 filing. “We have many opportunities to grow both the platform and the business, the latter through advertising, monetizing commerce on the platform and licensing data.”

In the filing, Reddit said that in January 2024 it entered into “certain data licensing arrangements” totaling $203 million with terms ranging from 2-3 years, with a minimum of $66.4 million of revenue to be recognized in calendar year 2024. “We believe our growing platform data will be a key element in the training of leading [artificial intelligence] large language models (‘LLMs’) and serve as an additional monetization channel for Reddit,” the company said.

Huffman owns 3.1% of the company’s outstanding shares and Reddit COO Jen Wong holds 1.5%, per the filing. Huffman’s compensation package for 2023 was worth $193.2 million, which included salary of $341,346, stock awards worth $98.3 million and stock options valued at $93.8 million. Wong’s total comp of $92.5 million included a base salary of $583,820, stock awards of $45.7 million and stock options worth $45.7 million.

Also in the filing, Reddit provided a long list of competitors, including Google, Meta (including Facebook, Instagram, Threads and WhatsApp), YouTube, Wikipedia, Snap, X (formerly Twitter), Pinterest, TikTok, Roblox, Discord and Twitch. In addition, “as we pursue opportunities to empower our user economy, we expect to face competition from existing online marketplaces,” Reddit said, including Facebook Marketplace, Nextdoor, Craigslist, Poshmark, Etsy and Roblox.

The company in December 2021 confidentially submitted a draft registration statement with the SEC for a proposed IPO.

Reddit, which once billed itself as “the front page of the internet,” currently carries the slogan “Dive into anything.” Last June, the company said it was eliminating 90 jobs , laying off about 5% of its total employee base, in a restructuring designed to position the company to break even in 2024.

Reddit was acquired by Condé Nast in 2006, soon after it launched in 2005. In 2011, Condé Nast spun out the site, while parent Advance Publications retained a minority stake. Other investors in Reddit include Vy Capital, Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz.

  1. [spoilers]Star Trek Enterprise: Season Finale : r/startrek

This was the episode that had the unenviable task of not only marking the end of a show cut down in its prime, but also the franchise as a whole after the failure of Nemesis. With that in mind, the finale should have been a glorious celebration of the optimism and human spirit that Trek represents. It failed.

  2. Sad about the Enterprise ending :( : r/startrek

Pwned_by_Bots • 2 yr. ago. In the framing story of the Enterprise novel, Last Full Measure (May 2006), it is revealed that Tucker did not actually die in "These Are the Voyages...", but survived and lived to be over 120 years of age (Tucker meets the young James T. Kirk and his family).

  3. Why did Enterprise end SOOOO BADLY??? I almost feel betrayed ...

What happened in general probably has to do more with UPN, the network that Enterprise and Voyager were created under, than anything else, and I'm still waiting for some Trek insider to write the book that talks about what really happened behind the scenes, but no dice so far. 4. Pretty disappointed by the ending of Enterprise Season 3

I don't and was disappointed by the temporal cold war plot. The show had a great premise, Trek before Trek, introducing time travel just undermined that… and I really dislike stories that try to portray themselves as some ideological conflict but just turn out to be a misunderstanding or a trick, like Avengers Civil War and Enterprise series 3.

I've often thought one of the many things that sets Star Trek apart from other series/franchises is the fact that it poses deep philosophical and moral questions and often refuses to provide a comforting solution. 12. Why Star Trek: Enterprise Ended (Was It Canceled?)

Over its four season run, Star Trek: Enterprise endured a great deal of controversy and was sometimes regarded as a weak link in the Star Trek franchise.
