Arsenal pre-season tour of United States shows how much has changed since Arsene Wenger

Arsenal Tour Diary Day 1: The Gunners are spending their pre-season in the United States but matches in glitzy stadiums with huge local interest has not always been the club's standard summer preparation

John Cross

To say Arsenal tours have evolved down the years, is one hell of an understatement.

Back in Arsene Wenger’s days, they used to go to a little German spa town called Bad Wartersdorf and play a couple of low-key friendlies on what felt like the local village green.

These days, it’s big business. Arsenal are in the United States, Mikel Arteta’s men start against the MLS All Stars here in Washington on Wednesday before going on to New Jersey and Los Angeles to play Manchester United and Barcelona.

At a little training campus about 30 minutes outside of central Washington, dozens of film crews, media, and journalists turned up to watch open training and grab a few words with Arteta and a couple of players.

It can be a snatched few minutes rather than a big sit-down - they still happen at the right time - and this time it was best to suggest to Arteta that we quickly get cracking. “Let’s go… transfers!” And just like that he’s brilliant with his praise for new boy Declan Rice.

The reality is that football clubs see these tours as big business, a great chance to connect with overseas fans and go global.

The managers just want quality training time, probably do not like too many flights and the scorching temperatures we are getting in the States.

But while Arsenal are used to the trips, it’s a new experience for Wrexham who, like Arsenal and Manchester United, are also touring the United States.

And Wrexham is a HUGE deal here in the US. The Wrexham squad were on my flight from London to Washington on Sunday - hierarchy in upmarket seats, players back with the rest of us in cattle class - and they had a film crew with them.

There was no superstar treatment - despite being owned by Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney - at passport control but a lot, and I mean a lot, of people coming up to them and talking about the documentary, the story and promotion.

They are seriously big news here. The US public have bought into the Wrexham story, cannot get enough of it and it is just as big this side of the Atlantic as back home. More so, perhaps.

Sadly, that didn’t stop the flight being delayed, making the connecting flight super tight and there was no VIP lane in passport control. That’s part of the charm, I guess.

I used to do a pre-season tour every year. This time, I’m doing the MLS All Stars v Arsenal on Wednesday, then flying to Miami for Lionel Messi’s debut. I do love coming to the States but have had some great times in Australia and, possibly my favourite country of all, Japan.

However, my best ever single day on a tour came a few years back in Los Angeles with Chelsea.

We got together a press team, we played Chelsea staff - including Jose Mourinho in goal and he pulled his hamstring rushing off his line together with some former Scotland, Portugal and Brazil internationals - and took them to penalties where we inevitably lost in the shoot-out.

There was John Terry and Ashley Cole cheering for Chelsea on the touchline plus Roman Abramovich and his other half watching. It was a brilliant day even if Abramovich’s bodyguard took me out at a corner just before the shoot-out.

Then came a Cranberries gig on Sunset Strip, running into Mike Tyson on the walk home and then the nightclub in the downstairs of the hotel. None of us wanted the day (or night) to end.

Sadly, we don’t get much time for days like that anymore and there’s not much time for the clubs to have fun either. The schedule is way too tight these days…

Arsenal USA tour 2023: What we know so far amid MLS All-Star game and tournament plan

21 mar   /   autty.

Arsenal news: The Gunners are expected to travel across the pond to the US in the summer as part of their preparations for the 2023/24 season

arsenal usa tour results

Arsenal's plans for pre-season ahead of the 2023/24 season are well underway as the Gunners gear up for a potential defence of the Premier League title.

In total, Arsenal played five friendlies in the build up to the start of the season. They flew to Germany to play Bundesliga 2 side FC Nurnberg at the start of July before visiting the United States to defeat Everton, Orlando City and Chelsea in the space of a week.

Despite there being plenty of football to be played this term, preparations for next season are already underway. Here, football.london brings you everything we know on the Gunners' pre-season visit to the States..

Club confirm USA plan

The club have confirmed plans that Arteta's side will travel to the United States as part of their preparations for the 2023/24 season. The Gunners will play an MLS All-Stars team - led by Wayne Rooney - in Washington D.C. on July 19.

Technical director Edu said: "Our match against MLS All-Stars in July is a great opportunity for Mikel and the squad to prepare ahead of the new season, facing a strong opposition. We’re currently working on our pre-season plans and we look forward to announcing further details soon."

Arteta also discussed his thoughts on the trip. He said: "It’s great that we’re playing against the MLS All-Stars in Washington D.C. in July. Our US tour last summer was very good preparation for the season, and we’re looking forward to once again visiting our amazing supporters in the US. The match against the MLS All-Stars will be a good test ahead of the 2023/24 season."

Major League Soccer All-Star game

The fixture would see Arteta face up against former Manchester United star Rooney in the dug-out due to the tradition that sees the coach of the host city coaching the MLS All-Stars. The fixture would be a change from the previous All-Star XIs from the Mexican league, something the MLS commissioner Don Galber believes would be a good change.

“I’m not sure we need that for our All-Star Game (in 2023)," Galber said. "You’ve got Campeones Cup coming up in September in New York City. So we’ll see what next year in Washington, D.C., looks like when D.C. United hosts, but you know, I’m not quite sure.”

Arsenal have been involved in an All-Star game before. Back in 2016, Arsene Wenger's side defeated the MLS best 2-1 thanks to goals from Joel Campbell and Chuba Akpom.

Competitive tournament

In October, it was reported by The Athletic that plans had been set to organise an 'enhanced pre-season tournament' in the United States as part of a roadmap to hold 'competitive matches in strategic markets'.

It's anticipated the event will take place in late July and could see around six Premier League clubs divided into two separate groups, each playing two round-robin style friendlies in various locations on the east and west coasts of America.

The report claims 14 of the current 20 Premier League sides are keen.

Squad named for US tour

USA Tour 2022

Mikel Arteta’s first-team squad step up pre-season preparations this week as they embark on a 10-day tour of USA, and we have named a 33-man squad for the trip.

After our last two proposed visits to America were cancelled due to Covid-19, this is the team’s first extended summer tour since 2019 – and three warm-up games, as well as intensive daily training sessions, await the players Stateside.

Setting off from London on Wednesday courtesy of Fly Emirates, the players will touchdown in Baltimore, Maryland for the first leg of the tour. After 5-1 and 5-3 wins over Ipswich Town and 1. FC Nurnberg respectively already this summer, our first game in America will be against Everton at 7pm local time (midnight UK time) this Saturday.

The following day it’s a short flight down the east coast to Orlando, Florida where we will face Orlando City next Wednesday (7.30pm local, 12.30am UK time) before the tour concludes against Chelsea on Saturday, July 23 (8pm local, 1am UK time).

Aside from the three games, the players will be continuing their new season preparations on the training pitches every day - in what are expected to be rigorous sessions - while also taking the opportunity to meet local fans at various events dotted throughout the week-and-a-half trip.

You can watch all three fixtures live on Arsenal.com and our official app ( find out how ), and we’ll be bringing you daily updates from inside the camp as well, as the countdown to the big Premier League kick-off on August 5 continues.

Our squad for the 2022 USA tour:

Goalkeepers: Aaron Ramsdale, Bernd Leno, Matt Turner, Arthur Okonkwo, Alex Runarsson

Arsenal will return to the United States for a third consecutive summer this year as part of their preparations for the 2024/25 season, football.london understands.

The Gunners have spent the last two pre-seasons under Mikel Arteta in the USA. In 2022 they played Everton, Orlando City and Chelsea before they took on an MLS All-Stars team, Manchester United and Barcelona last year. Arsenal fell to a 2-0 defeat to Erik ten Hag's side at the Metlife Stadium in July before beating Spanish champions Barca 5-3 at Stan Kroenke-owned SoFi Stadium.

And while there is plenty still to play for this season, preparations for the next campaign are already under way at London Colney. football.london understands the Gunners will play games on the west and east coast of America before the Premier League season kicks off on August 17 2024.

The Athletic have reported that Arsenal's Premier League rivals Manchester United and Liverpool will also visit the USA this summer. The report says the trio will all play each other.

It adds that the Premier League Summer Series, which featured Chelsea, Brighton, Brentford, Newcastle, Fulham and Aston Villa across five US destinations, will not be repeated this summer but claims Chelsea could face Manchester City in a Stateside friendly.

After their last visit to the USA, Arteta admitted the support in the country is getting bigger and bigger for his team. He said: "We certainly feel a big difference now in the States with the support we are having. We were in three cities, Washington DC, New York and now in LA and it’s getting bigger and bigger. So thank you so much to everybody because we really feel at home now here.

"I think it was a challenge because we had a lot of travelling and a lot of things to adapt to, but I think the team showed a big capacity to adapt to different times, to different pitches, to the heat, to different opponents. It was a really good test."

ACC Basketball tournament bracket: Full TV schedule, scores, results for 2024 championship

The ACC men's basketball tournament is returning to the nation's capital.

North Carolina is the 1-seed in the conference tournament for the first time since 2017. Hubert Davis' team, who locked up the regular season title on Saturday with a win over Duke , enters the ACC tournament at 25-6 overall and 17-3 in the ACC. Senior guard R.J. Davis has continued to play some of his best basketball heading into the postseason, averaging 19.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists across the last six games.

The Blue Devils are the 2-seed and the likely fit to give North Carolina a run for its money if both meet up in Saturday's championship game. If the Tar Heels and the Blue Devils do meet up in the title game, it would be the first time since 2011.

Though Jon Scheyer's squad ultimately fell short against the Tar Heels in the regular season final, Duke has been playing great basketball the last three months only losing three games since the start of January. Sophomore forward Kyle Filipowski , who was named a finalist for the Karl Malone award last week, is top 10 in the ACC in scoring (16.7 ppg), rebounding (8.0 rpg), field goal percentage (50.4%) and blocks (50).

While North Carolina and Duke have their spots in the NCAA Tournament locked up, this week's ACC tournament is crucial for three other programs — Virginia, Wake Forest and Pittsburgh — who hope to go dancing. ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi currently has Virginia as one of his "last four in" and playing in next week's First Four in Dayton. A win on Thursday against either Clemson, Boston College or Miami would put the Cavaliers in the field of 68 according to Lunardi. As for the other two, Lunardi has them slated as one of his "next four out" meaning this week's conference tournament could be make or break for the Demon Deacons and Panthers.

Who is ready for some Big Ten Tournament Madness?

Though it hasn't been a traditional year in the Big Ten this season in terms of the number of teams in the national polls , there has been depth in the conference that shows any team can win on any given night. But first, one of the other 13 Big Ten teams will have to take down powerhouse Purdue .

The Boilermakers, anchored by 7-foot-4 behemoth forward Zach Edey , are once again the 1-seed in the conference tournament and have all but guaranteed themselves a top seed in the NCAA Tournament. Matt Painter's squad enters the Big Ten tournament chasing some history, as it looks to become just the third Big Ten program to win back-to-back conference tournament titles.

More: Watch the Big Ten men's basketball tournament live with Fubo (free trial)

Brad Underwood's Fighting Illini are tabbed as the No. 2 seed in Minneapolis and, like the Boilermakers, are well-situated heading into March Madness. Senior guard Terrence Shannon Jr. is having a career season at Illinois, averaging a career-best 21.6 points per game along with 4.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. In the last four games, Shannon has been scorching hot from the field, averaging 22.0 points in that span.

While Purdue and Illinois are the favorite heading in to the Big Ten Tournament, there are a handful of teams that can make a run at it such as No. 3 Nebraska and No. 4 Northwestern.

Keisei Tominaga has helped lead Nebraska to its best year in the Big Ten and the No. 3 seed. The Japanese sharpshooter poured in 30 points on Sunday against Michigan State on 12-of-17 shooting. The Cornhuskers already took down Purdue once this season , so can Big Red do it again if it faces the Boilermakers in Sunday's championship game?

REQUIRED READING: Michigan State basketball's problems persist. Big Ten tournament run possible or pipe dream?

As for teams who remain either on the bubble as at-large bids — Iowa , Ohio State , Michigan State — according to ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi , this week's conference tournament will be important for their NCAA Tournament resume and odds. The Spartans and Tom Izzo, who are currently a 9-seed according to Lunardi, have a 26-year NCAA Tournament appearance streak on the line heading into Minneapolis.

USWNT live stream: How to watch USA vs. Brazil in W Gold Cup final on Paramount+, start time

The conacaf w gold cup may be what pushes the uswnt beyond their disappointing 2023 world cup elimination.

The shadowy overcast of a historic 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup elimination has lingered around the U.S. women's national team for over half a year now as they've looked to turn the page on their historically disappointing elimination to Sweden in the round of 16. Over the last seven months, there have been some positive moments, wins, and goals scored since they played in the global tournament, but there hasn't quite been that feeling of closure, of truly moving on from the summer's disaster.

Years of buildup towards that World Cup were over, gone in a digitized snapshot, measuring their tournament elimination by a literal millimeter . Missed penalty kicks didn't help their case. Iconic players have since retired and a new incoming manager, Chelsea FC's Emma Hayes, is on the way.

The 2024 W Concacaf W Gold Cup is the first tournament post-World Cup for the program in its first steps into a new era. The tournament has presented itself almost as a clean slate, as an opportunity to try new things for interim head coach Twila Kilgore, her coaching staff, and players.

The build-up to the Olympics is short and the situation with Emma Hayes' impending arrival means it's been a collaborative effort to manage the team, present new tactics, and evaluate players. It's a unique circumstance.

The Gold Cup has offered numerous scenarios as extra preparation for the Paris Games. There have been comfortable wins with multiple goal scorers. There's also been the stunning defeat against Mexico. And, then, in knockout rounds we've seen gritty play, and even waterlogged pitches to deal with. There have been invited CONMEBOL teams and long-standing Concacaf regional rivalries to witness. And, throughout it all are the overall lessons of a major tournament to learn from.

It's part of what Kilgore has been focused on in her role since August 2023. Her time as interim was extended after the U.S. Soccer Federation worked out a timeline to conduct an extensive coaching search and hire their preferred candidate in Hayes. Kilgore was with the team during their 2023 World Cup as an assistant and is set to remain with the program as an assistant coach with Hayes' staff.

She's seen the players carry memories of the World Cup elimination. As the team progresses through Gold Cup knockout games, player confidence has risen and perhaps some personal demons have even been cast out.

"I think these moments are actually really critical to building towards major events. You know, this is a major event. Obviously winning tonight [against Canada] it's huge because it puts us in a final," Kilgore said after the game.

"But these are also the kind of moments that you need going into major tournaments. This is an Olympic year for us, and sometimes, it just, it takes a grind. It takes a mentality and the fact that we can do that we can do that in two must win games, back-to-back, speaks volumes."

The USWNT ended their group stage on a 2-0 loss to Mexico, resulting in their first defeat to Tri Femenil in over a decade. They had a tenacious response against Colombia, 2023 World Cup dark horses, with periods of spirited and sometimes abrasive play.

Against the backdrop of torrential downpours and a soggy field, they took down their Canadian rivals, even if the weather (or individual errors) took them out of the game at times. Despite the questionable conditions, Kilgore and the group are taking the lessons, and momentum, with them into the final on Sunday against Brazil.

"You look at some of our less experienced players putting back-to-back games, major minutes, doing a great job asked to do two totally different jobs from game to game and from what they were asked to do earlier," said Kilgore.

In any major tournament, a competitive roster is often a balanced one. As coaches assemble their ideal list of players, there's often a mix of those who are in their prime, along with some veterans and young up-and-coming players. For the USWNT during the Gold Cup, Alex Morgan and Alyssa Naeher have been providing the experience and delivering on the pitch.

Morgan's efforts against Colombia earned an early penalty and the U.S. never looked back as they secured a 3-0 win. Naeher came up with big saves when tested, and against Canada, she put in a shift that will go down in Concacaf history.

The long-time goalkeeper conceded a penalty at the very end of extra time and was unable to save it to close out the match but then went on to stop two penalty shots in the shootout before converting an attempt of her own. She made a third save to seal USA's place in the final.

"That just speaks volumes about her mentality and also how these types of experiences that she's faced, over and over again in her career lead to absolute confidence in her ability to do these things. We know she's gonna step up," Kilgore said. "Sometimes life and the game goes a different direction. You gotta adjust and that's part of it, too. So we're really pleased."

The last time the team faced a penalty scenario to decide a match was in the World Cup against Sweden. Among the missed penalties was one by Sophia Smith (others were Megan Rapinoe and Kelley O'Hara). Then, despite her best attempts, Naeher's diving effort to sav went up against physics and goal line technology and the USA was out of the World Cup.

Smith has been vocal about the moment. It's one that she's carried with her ever since. For pro athletes in the NWSL, there was little room for compartmentalization, with the regular season running concurrently with the World Cup.

Sometimes getting back into a routine can be helpful for players. It didn't take Smith long to make an impact for club with Portland Thorns and she scored in her return from the tournament, but later she sustained an MCL sprain that left her with even more time to dwell on her World Cup exit. In the semifinals not only did Smith score what seemed like the game winning goal in extra time, before Canada's late late equalizer, but she also took, and converted, the team's first penalty.

"I think, you know, to come into a game like that and to be able to score a big goal in extra time this huge, it was great goal," Naeher said on Smith's performance against Canada. "She worked hard all day getting in and then to step up and take the first penalty just speaks to the kind of player she is, kind of person she is, to be ready to step up in that moment."

Smith's efforts in the Gold Cup semifinal against Canada felt equal parts like she was routinely getting the job done and emotional catharsis. You could see it in her extra-time goal celebration. "It was an emotional goal. I haven't scored in a while and I've just been kind of on an emotional roller coaster since the World Cup. So that was a big relief and it just felt really good, and [for the] team I put us in a position to win this game, and that's more important than anything," Smith said after the game.

"Last penalty I took in a big game was the World Cup and didn't go how I wanted it to go. I think going up to this one. I was just calm. I've been practicing. I know I can put those away. And I just didn't overthink it. I felt good about going first. I wanted to set the tone and I just did my routine, did what I know how to do and put it away," she explained.

Both Smith and Naeher were complimentary of each other post game with Naeher having just gone through a tough 2023 for club and country. The goalkeeper has even discussed the weight of elimination during a podcast episode with her former teammate Sam Mewis saying she'd go to her grave claiming she's saved it the penalty against Sweden. Against Canada in the Gold Cup, she made navigting a penalty shootout look easy.

"She's insane," Smith said on Naeher's performance. "She made some incredible saves. She stepped up, took a PK, calmly. Like the coolest person I've ever seen take a PK. She was a hero tonight. I think she's getting a lot of recognition that she deserves and has always deserved. She stepped up big time and we wouldn't be here without her "

Looking ahead

Despite the questionable conditions, Kilgore and the group are taking the experiences of each result into the Gold Cup final on Sunday. Fans can watch the main event on Paramount+.

They'll face a Brazil side that is peaking at the right time and searching for a bit of redemption to move on from the memory of a disappointing World Cup themselves. The South Americans failed to advance out of their group and spent only a short time in the tournament. They have been without their most iconic player Marta and Kerolin is out with an ACL injury she sustained in October.

The two sides will meet for the 40th time and the USWNT leads the all-time series (31-3-5) comfortably. Still, that's all just history, and this is what is officially a new era for the U.S. senior program. What will truly help the team move on and look forward will be to win and hoist the cup together.
