How to Become a Travel Agent—Because, Believe It or Not, the Industry Is on the Rise

By Scott Bay

How to Become a Travel Agent—Because Believe It or Not the Industry Is on the Rise

There’s a reason “how to become a travel agent” has been a continuously trending search phrase on Google—it is a career path that offers a flexible work environment and schedule, ample travel opportunities, and an immersion into a supportive world-wide industry. It's a surprise to some in 2023: Once the internet became widely available, it was largely believed that needing a travel agent was obsolete. However, even though the brick-and-mortar agencies with punny names in strip malls have vanished, the career is on-the-rise .

New software options are making it easier than ever for people to make money planning trips, either as a side hustle or as a full-time business. That’s why Cherikonda, India-based stay-at-home mother, Maya Kapoor-Miller, decided to enter the professional world as a travel agent this year, at 31. “I knew nothing about the travel industry prior to signing up,” says Kapoor-Miller, who decided to use San Francisco-based booking platform Dreamport to establish her online travel advisor business. “It is my first business in life, and the only one that you can start with no investment.”

But there's also a rise in demand. When people ventured back into the world after the pandemic, travel agents saw an overwhelming amount of business . And that momentum hasn’t stopped—when travel is complicated, like it was in 2020 and 2021, travelers turned to professional trip planners to create a seamless vacation. For better or worse, traveling has remained complicated and chaotic, with new rules being implemented (like Americans needing to pay a fee to visit Europe in 2024 ) and airline strikes and staffing issues. Offloading all of the nitty-gritty details to someone else is more appealing than ever.

For those entering the field, there's also the age-old motivator: a love of travel.

Shelton Ellis, who is based in North Carolina, recently saw these opportunities and left behind more than 20 years in public relations and global advertising to turn his passion into a career. “I was born with a wanderlust that would wear Rick Steves out,” Ellis says. “I decided to take the leap and follow that lifelong yearning. Transitioning into this role was really about learning how to monetize what I'm passionate about.”

Whether you are looking for a new career path or a lucrative side-hustle—or simply curious about those taking the plunge—here’s how to become a travel agent, from the qualifications and education required, to anticipated earnings, according to those who have made the shift in the past year.

What exactly does a travel agent do?

Travel agents, or travel advisors (the term is mostly interchangeable), manage everything that goes into a trip for their clients: the flights, car transfers, accommodations, restaurant reservations, and more—they even inspire the itinerary. The reason people turn to travel agents, aside from having a helping hand during any travel chaos , is also to tap into the travel agent’s first-hand knowledge of destinations, and their industry partnerships, which often lead to perks such as hotel upgrades, ideal airplane seats, and experiences that can’t be found on a search engine.

“You have to remember that as a travel agent, you will be a guide for people during their happiest moments—family reunions, weddings , baptisms, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences that people have dreamt of,” says Kapoor-Miller. “It has been one of the most rewarding aspects of being a travel agent. You navigate people, inform them, and help them choose.”

So, how do you become a travel agent?

There are many ways to become a travel agent, from joining an existing travel agency , to starting an independent business from the ground up. Others are opting for one of the buzziest start-ups in the travel industry, Fora . When it launched in 2021, the software company, which trains and provides search engine-optimized profile pages to advisors—at one point had a waitlist of over 30,000 people eager to begin a part-time gig. Travel photographer and Condé Nast Traveler contributor Amanda Villarosa is currently in the process of joining.

“I'm the person that friends and family come to for travel recommendations, tips and tricks, and general travel advice,” says Villarosa. “After discovering Fora and looking into it, I realized that it could be the perfect side-hustle, considering I'm already so involved in the industry.”

With additional flexibility, Villarosa was able to move from New York City to splitting her time between Denver and Los Angeles . She says that the sign-up was quite straightforward. “You're given a dedicated Fora email and have access to advising tools and fellow Fora advisors,” she says. “The training is in the form of Zoom meetings and videos, which you have the option to watch at your own pace. Once completed, you take a certification quiz and you're on your way to advising.”

The other ways in are slightly more involved. To begin an independent practice, you go about it like many other businesses. You will have to create an LLC, establish a business name, cultivate marketing materials, build a website, find clientele, and more.

Ellis found something in the middle, choosing to connect with an established travel agency. “Don't be afraid to reach out to an agency looking to take on new advisors and is willing to mentor," says Ellis. "I was fortunate to learn so much from Annie Chambers, the owner of Crafted Escapes , who has seven years in the business.” He now knows the ropes on everything from using itinerary-building software to destination-specific training, to the sales and marketing aspects of the trade.

Is there required education or qualifications?

Ellis says that there's no certification, per se, required to become a travel advisor, but there are countless training courses available like Departure Lounge ’s classes on navigating the industry through hotels and tour operators. He said it’s also important to stay on top of travel trends. Ellis recently completed travel agent training programs provided by premier cruise lines such as Virgin Voyages , Ritz-Carlton Yachts , and Cunard to help agents sell their products more accurately.

How much does a travel agent make?

What a travel agent earns depends on how many trips they successfully book for their clients. The entire model is commission-based, meaning agents earn a percentage of the total cost of the vacation they orchestrate. Many travel advisors choose to charge a flat-rate planning fee in addition to their commission, but balance is key—if you charge a high planning fee, it could lead to potential clients going elsewhere.

Fora ’s website states that “some of our full-time, expert advisors earn well into the six figures (or beyond).” So a lucrative career may be on the horizon, for those who are able to build a robust client base and excellent industry connections.

How much you make can also depend on where you live around the world. “I am being paid in dollars,” says India-based Kapoor-Miller. “So the currency fluctuations of the local exchange rate are not something I am worried about.”

What are the key skills required to become a travel agent?

“Travel agents need a mix of customer service, communication, destination knowledge, organizational, and problem-solving skills,” says Kapoor-Miller. “But I would say that adaptability, flexibility, curiosity, and cultural sensitivity top them all—you have to put yourself in other's shoes, and understand the requirements, hopes, and expectations of your clients along with any worries and questions they may have.”

It’s vital to have a passion for traveling, even the aspects of the process that aren’t as exciting, such as learning about new airline routes, train schedule updates, and industry news. “It can be an information-heavy hustle, and I believe it's important to be excited about it as that energy definitely transfers to your clients and partners,” Villarosa says.

Should travel advisors choose a specialization?

Many travel advisors have found success through becoming an expert in a few types of travel and destinations. “It's important to become an authority and learn as much as you can through personal experiences and continuing education,” says Ellis. “As a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community , an avid snow skier, and scuba diver, I know not only the popular destinations but others that are off the beaten path, equally safe and adventurous for all travelers.” This helps travel agents establish a competitive edge, and hopefully convince potential clients to choose them for their expertise.

What are the benefits of being a travel agent?

“Flexibility tops them all,” says Kapoor-Miller. “And the ability to start without industry knowledge. If you worry that you are too old for this job, the good news is that this is a job you can enter and enjoy at any age.”

Another great perk is the "Familiarization trip,” says Ellis. “Tourism boards and hotels invite agents to visit and familiarize themselves with a particular country and its properties. After all, any accomplished salesperson should learn everything they can about their products first-hand...even if they're in Bora Bora.” It's hard work, but someone's got to do it.

6 Reasons Why You Should use a Travel Agency System

Apr 12, 2022

travel agency system TripMatrix

What is Travel Agency System, and why do you need one?

Travel agency system is a solution used by travel agents, travel advisors, DMCs, tour operators, tour guides, and OTAs to manage day-to-day business activities from adding products and services , building trips , creating and sending offers, promote products on web booking engine , and utilizing direct communication with their clients, all the way to automated payment processing.

With the travel agency system , just as with other technologies, there are many options, each with its features, functionalities, and price.

Every travel agent has unique needs, and understanding your requirements is critical to digitally transform your travel business .

Simplify your day-to-day Business

How many apps, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and communication channels are you using to manage your travel agency? Are they all connected? How much time do you spend using all the complex tools and apps instead of selling your offerings?

Travel agencies and tour operators need to adopt new technologies to stay up to date with digital transformation. Find out why travel agents fear switching to new technology .

Cloud-based solutions can save you time and resources. However, it can also allow you to focus more on creating a unique experience for your customers instead of focusing on a log and repetitive administration tasks.

Here are some of the reasons you need software to manage your travel business.

TripMatrix platform

Reasons To Use a Travel Agency System

1. reduce resources and improve time management  .

Imagine if your only task is to create an unforgettable experience for your clients because the software takes care of all administrative tasks.

Staff is one of the key expenses and the biggest asset for any travel company. Automating administrative operations such as trip building, creating offers for predefined and custom trips, payment tracking, and cancellation processing with the software will help you save a lot of resources.

The money saved on administration tasks could be spent on marketing and building relationships with clients. The travel agency  system  enables you to accomplish and earn more while optimizing resources.

2. An efficient way to Manage your Products and Services

Most travel agencies have products and services they want to promote and sell, such as accommodation, transportation services, experience, etc. In order to expand the reach and visibility of their products and services, agencies use OTA-s and other third-party platforms, which usually charge them significant fees.

With TripMatix travel agency system you will have an option to add your offerings directly inside the platform, manage prices, get a wider reach, and improve bookings of your products and services.

You will also be able to connect with many suppliers inside the TripMatrix platform and use their products and services to improve your itineraries.

The price of all products as well as the other key information from TripMatrix partners is visible directly inside the platform.

3. Simplify Trip Building Processes

Travel agents usually keep itinerary text and images on multiple documents which requires a lot of manual work. Imagine having all texts and photos inside the system?

With TripMatrix system , you will have the option to create predefined trips, or you can manually select just a part of the trip like accommodation, transportation options, experiences, etc. This will allow you to create itineraries much faster and more efficient.

The system automatically calculates the total price, payment options, and cancellation policy, but the agent can always edit and adjust the pricing model based on his/her wishes.

Once a travel agent is satisfied with all aspects of the itinerary, the agent sends an offer as a URL which leads to a website. Clients have an option to view the itinerary and request modifications. The agent then checks the request and makes changes directly inside the software.

Once they agree on the trip details, a client can complete the transaction directly inside the TripMatrix system and receive a confirmation email.

4. Keep all customer data and profiles in one place

How do you currently manage your customer information? Do you manage all your client information in an excel table? No worries, you are not the only one.

With TripMatrix Profiles Module you can easily add all your key customer information such as; full name, email, phone number, etc.  An agent can also view the previous conversations with the client, all previously sent offers, and their status.

You can utilize clients’ information for direct communication and as a CRM for future marketing campaigns and trip promotions.

5. Automated Payment Process

Many agencies use bank transfers or cash as payment options. This process can be tricky to manage because agents must always look at the bank account and check which clients paid in full, which paid partially, not to mention the cancellation process.

This all takes a lot of time and effort.

TripMatrix Payment Module integrates with Stripe, which manages all transactions through its payment gateway. The TripMatrix system will automatically generate invoices and take care of all transactions.

Once the transaction is complete, a client will receive an email reminder for every due payment until the full amount has been paid. For every successful payment, the client will receive an invoice with email notification.

What is travel agency software?

Travel agency software is a tool that helps travel businesses and agencies manage their operations. It simplifies tasks such as booking reservations for flights, hotels, car rentals, and creating customized itineraries. The software also assists in tracking sales and commissions while providing detailed reports on business performance.

Moreover, this platform often includes features such as customer relationship management (CRM) to maintain a customer database and track customer interactions, invoicing to handle payments smoothly, and marketing tools to promote deals or packages.

Using travel agency software can help travel advisors and tour operators save time by automating routine processes, such as data entry and sending confirmation emails and invoices.

What are the core features of travel agency software?

Reservations management: Handle reservation processes such as online booking, scheduling, and modifying customer reservations for flights, hotels, or tour packages through a built-in booking engine. Reservation management also often includes availability checking and automatic booking confirmations.

Itinerary creation : Assist in planning, scheduling, and organizing client trips. With the itinerary creation feature, details such as flight or train schedules, hotel reservations, and car rental details can be compiled into a single document for easy access during travel.

Payment processing : Handle transactions with clients securely. It processes various forms of payment, such as credit cards, debit cards, and digital wallets, for booking services such as flights, hotels, and car rentals. The feature ensures safe and efficient payment processing while maintaining transaction records for future reference.

What are the benefits of using travel agency software?

Simplifies the booking process : Travel agency software simplifies booking processes by automating tasks such as searching for and suggesting flights, hotels, and car rentals. Travel agents can book services quickly without checking multiple providers' websites or platforms for the best deals. Such a process saves considerable time and effort, resulting in an efficient booking process with fewer errors.

Manages customer information effectively : Travel agency software stores all customer-related personal information, such as contact details, booking history, and preferences, in one place for easy access. Such centralization helps travel agencies provide personalized service for online travel booking based on past interactions or preferences, enhancing customers' experience and leading to repeat business.

Automates invoicing and billing tasks: Travel agency software simplifies financial management by auto-generating invoices, calculating total costs accurately, applying discounts, if any, and sending them to clients. This level of automation reduces manual effort for staff members while minimizing errors in calculations or data entry for online booking, which can lead to customer dissatisfaction or revenue loss.

What are the potential issues with travel agency software?

Poor customer support: The tourism and travel business is fast-paced, so clients need quick resolutions for problems. If they encounter problems or have questions that aren't promptly addressed, it could cause frustration and negatively affect their overall experience. Having software that doesn't offer seamless customer support options might lead to losing customers to competing services offering better user assistance.

Inadequate payment gateways: Lack of adequate payment gateways limits the number of options customers have to make payments, which could lead to a loss in sales if preferred methods are not supported. Also, insecure or unreliable payment systems may deter clients due to security concerns, thereby further negatively impacting your business.

Lack of customization: Lack of customization means the inability to tailor services based on individual customer preferences, potentially leading to dissatisfaction and lost business opportunities. Customization helps provide personalized experiences, which is crucial for maintaining client loyalty and attracting new customers in a competitive market.

How much does travel agency software cost?

Most travel agency software products are priced “per month” basis, and their entry-level pricing plan ranges from $49 to $99+* . An enterprise product priced higher may include additional features such as customized travel package management, advanced itinerary reporting and analytics, gift card and voucher management, and advanced booking widgets.

*The pricing included is for the entry-level/lowest-priced offerings found on vendor websites as of Feb. 13, 2024.

What is travel agency software used for?

A travel agency software system centralizes processes related to booking management, payment processing, and client–agent communication. However, the software can have multiple use cases based on the data fed into the system and the tool's features leveraged. Some of them are:

Operations management : Travel agency software helps manage day-to-day travel management operations for businesses. These include task automation for repetitive tasks such as sending booking confirmations, generating invoices, and updating customer records. Additionally, the software helps create staff schedules and manage fleets for operators that provide transportation services by identifying peak booking periods.

Dynamic package creation : Travel agency software allows agents to dynamically create travel packages by combining flights, hotels, and leisure activities based on customer preferences. The software takes real-time pricing adjustments and availability updates from third-party websites and booking platforms, adding and modifying components for a client's trip accordingly.

Multi-channel booking integration : Travel agency software integrates with various third-party booking channels, ensuring that agents can seamlessly manage and synchronize bookings on these external platforms. Additionally, integrating multiple channels increases the visibility of a travel agency and its offerings. It also enables potential customers to find and book services through their preferred platform. The software ensures that bookings through such platforms are integrated into the central reservation system.

Which software tools integrate with travel agency software?

A travel agency tool integrates with various solutions for data export and import. We looked across thousands of reviews from software users in the travel industry to identify the products that the users frequently mentioned they integrated with their tools:

Stripe is an online payment platform that integrates with travel agency software to help accept and process digital payments from clients. Customers can send payments through such a payment gateway integration via their preferred mode, such as debit or credit cards or online banking. Stripe also helps generate invoices that businesses can use to track payments.

Zapier is a workflow management software solution that offers task automation capabilities by providing integrations with various other applications and services, such as email marketing and customer relationship management (CRM) software. For instance, businesses can use Zapier to automate repetitive processes, such as data entry, sending booking confirmation and follow-up emails, and assigning agents to specific clients to manage customer support.

Google Calendar is a calendar management and scheduling platform that helps businesses sync travel itineraries and booking details from the travel agency software to clients' Google Calendars. Google Calendar provides reminder notifications for upcoming events. By integrating with Google Calendar, travel agencies can help clients stay informed about their travel schedules, reducing the likelihood of missed flights or activities.

QuickBooks is an accounting solution that integrates with travel agency software to keep track of customer financial data, including invoices, payments, and other internal financial transactions. Changes made in the travel agency software, such as booking updates, cancellations, or new transactions, can be reflected in QuickBooks in real time. This ensures that the agency’s financial records are consistently up-to-date .

Airtable is a collaboration platform that integrates with travel agency software and grants access to multiple team members to create a centralized database containing information about tour packages, customer information, and internal business data. Airtable allows travel agencies to create customizable tables and fields based on specific data requirements. This flexibility enables the customization of data structures to match the unique needs of the travel agency, accommodating various types of information, such as booking IDs, itineraries, service types, and other travel-related data.

*We identified these integrations mentioned most often in verified reviews of travel agency software published on Software Advice within the past two years. (as of Feb. 13, 2024).

Key considerations when purchasing travel agency software

Evaluate the ease of booking and reservation management: The ease of booking and reservation management directly impact the efficiency and effectiveness of operations. A user-friendly system allows quick bookings, updates, or changes to reservations, etc., leading to improved customer service experience and reduced operational errors.

Check the capability of creating customized travel packages: The ability to create customized travel packages allows for flexibility and personalization based on client preferences. This feature can enhance customer satisfaction, differentiate your services from competitors, and potentially increase revenue by offering unique experiences tailored specifically to individual requirements.

Assess the efficiency of customer relationship management functionality: Effective customer relationship management (CRM) features in travel agency software can help manage and analyze customer interactions, enhance relationships with customers, improve service quality, and increase retention rates. It also allows the identification of new potential clients, which ultimately drives sales growth. Therefore it's crucial to evaluate the efficiency of CRM functionality when purchasing such a tool.

Products evaluated for the pricing calculation were taken from Software Advice’s travel agency software directory. The pricing ranges exclude freemium versions of the products. The features highlighted were identified based on their relevance and the percentage of products in Software Advice's directory that offer them.

Travel Agency Software: Choosing Tools for Booking, Tour Building, Accounting, and Marketing

For the longest time, people have been planning their vacations by walking into a well-stocked room surrounded by maps and brochures. Greeted by an agent offering a cup of coffee, they would begin the discussion about budgets and desired experiences. When online travel agencies started slowly but surely replacing traditional shops in 2005 , Internet-adept travelers had to learn to book their trips on their home computers. Today, a traditional brick-and-mortar agency sounds archaic, as most agents digitize their processes and move online. But rolling out advanced booking engines with intricate search and pricing logic or investing 6-digit budgets into back-office systems are the paths of mature businesses. You may learn how automated back office works from our dedicated article or watch a video.

How Back Office Works in Online Travel Agency

Andrey, our travel technology competence lead, explains OTA back office in less than 9 minutes.

Travel agent work

For many travel agents, their work is not synonymous with adventure and exploration

To see where exactly a travel agency is positioned in the travel distribution flow, check out two handy infographics we created for airline management and hotel distribution . Basically, a travel agency is one of the contact points for (usually leisure) travelers that helps them choose and organize a trip. This includes hotel and flight bookings, transfers, activities, excursions, etc. Previously, we’ve talked a lot about mature and fully automated online travel agencies , but today we tackle smaller stores where people either speak to a human agent and entrust them with all the planning or combine that with some form of self-service experience. We also focus on leisure travel since managing corporate travel operations takes other forms, such as hiring a travel management company, handling travel and expense management , or using self-service solutions .

What software do travel agents use?

The day-to-day operations of a typical travel agent usually include scheduling, tour program creation, consultation services, activities booking, vendor negotiation, creating personalized tours, and finding the best fare for a client’s budget. Of course, this doesn’t have to be done by hand or in Excel spreadsheets. There are already specialized online solutions on the market and they fall into four types:

  • Travel booking software,
  • Tour and itinerary builders,
  • Accounting software, and
  • CRM and marketing software.

Travel agency software functionality

Solutions from different categories that span several types of travel agency software.

However, additional capabilities can be limited compared to dedicated tools. So, in many cases, travel agents end up leveraging several instruments. Below, we’ll review a few players from each group to better understand what’s available.

PHPTRAVELS: Customize your booking engine as you need

Designed for travel agencies and other online travel businesses You can book flights, hotels, cars, and tours PHPTRAVELS is a complete booking engine with invoicing and reporting functionality. It boasts excellent flexibility and a modular structure, making the software suitable for travel agencies and many other businesses selling travel online — from hotels and vacation rentals to cruises and tour operators. Whether you need flight, hotel, car, or tour booking, use each component separately and enrich your existing solution. You can also add a CMS, newsletter, calendar, and other modules and choose from major payment gateways. The system lets you enable and disable currencies, add multiple languages, and translate pages. The platform is integrated with Amadeus GDS , air content aggregator Duffel, Kiwi.com, Agoda, tours and experiences supplier Viator, and other travel distributors. It’s 100 percent open source, meaning you can employ developers to customize the tool. They also provide the code for your mobile application, and you can test the demos on their website.

Rezdy: Meet a leading platform for experiential travel

Designed for tour operators You can book tours, activities, attractions, shuttles, charters, and tickets. Rezdy is a B2B online booking software for tour operators, but it can also be helpful for agents specializing in experiential travel . Tour and itinerary building software

Designing tours is one of the most time-consuming operations in a travel agency. It requires booking, planning, scheduling, and pricing – all considering the most popular, budget, or unique inventory for each location. Thankfully, there is software for this. A typical tour builder would include:

  • drag-and-drop interface;
  • access to detailed content from hotels, restaurants, city guides, etc.;
  • photo libraries;
  • tour templates, and
  • exporting itineraries into PDF and other convenient formats.

Tour creation is usually associated with tour operators, so you can check our article specifically dedicated to tour operator software . Itinerary-building tools also streamline the work of travel consultants, destination management companies, and host travel agencies . Read our dedicated articles to learn why travel agents need host travel agencies and how they can tap into DMC potential .

Accounting software

Most reservation tools we listed above provide financial management capabilities for travel agencies. However, as a rule, any business that has to do something with sales needs a more complex accounting system. Some of the must-have features include

  • tracking and scheduling payments,
  • monitoring expenses and income,
  • bank reconciliation,
  • Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) compliance, and
  • financial analytics and reporting.

Now, let’s quickly review what the market offers in accounting for travel agencies.

TravelWorks: BSP-ARC support and group planning

TravelWorks interfaces with major GDSs and can easily integrate with your booking engine. Besides an accounting module, its suite of tools includes

  • a reservation management module connected with SIREV booking engine (available exclusively to Canadian travel agents);
  • a tour management component for tour operators and travel management specialists; and

CRM systems

How is travel customer relationship management different from any other? Why can’t you use one of the traditional solutions from Zoho, HubSpot, or Salesforce? Every industry has marketing properties that can’t be covered by one universal tool. So, here are the capabilities to look for in a travel CRM system:

  • lead distribution among agents,
  • travel-specific customer categories,
  • support for travel marketing channels (booking websites, TripAdvisor, etc.),
  • automated departure and arrival notifications, and
  • customized dashboards.

Let’s see how existing solutions help travel agencies solve marketing challenges.

What to look for in travel software: our recommendations

Good travel agency software shouldn’t only perform the functions your clients can already easily access online. It must bring out the advantages of traditional agencies and strengthen their operations without creating new obstacles, such as a complicated interface that will make your agents return to their Excel spreadsheets. When looking for either accounting, reservation, or marketing software, pay attention to the factors mentioned below and pick out a tool that will make your business shine. Tech support. This includes not only 24/7 chat or call service but also a knowledge base , FAQs, and tutorials. TripCreator, for example, provides webinar training to all users, while Orioly creates video instructions. Business flow, similar to yours. Thanks to trial options available in many cloud platforms, you can determine which software follows the same processes you and your agents already have. User-friendly interface. Just like a tool’s workflow should be familiar to your agents, its user experience must rely on the same familiar language they do. Localization. Check whether the booking or tour building software of your choice supports the languages and currencies of countries where your customers live. Read our article on website localization in travel to dive deeper into details. Automatic confirmations and notifications. Make sure that both agents and clients get notified about the main touchpoints of their journeys. While not required, it’s also useful to have a disruption management tool to help travelers already on their trip navigate during flight delays. Automatic client database creation. Most CRMs create lead and client profiles automatically when you receive a quote request online, with data provided by travelers: names, desired destinations and dates, and the number of people in the group. Secure access. Travel agents handle sensitive and personal client information, so data protection is not optional for travel agency tools. You probably also want to protect information about each agent’s sales from other agents. Advanced reports. What’s the point in gathering and managing all this data if you can’t draw insights from it? Reporting functions will show you which destinations, dates, seasons, and agents bring you the most value.

Start thinking of automation and your own systems

The competition in the travel agency market is fierce. Booking Holdings and Expedia are close to becoming an oligopoly, capturing the majority of travelers thanks to great service and unlimited marketing capabilities. And yet, smaller niche agencies may still thrive if they manage to access the best deals or offer unique travel products unavailable with industry behemoths. To do that, you have to take control of the systems and tweak them to work for your value proposition. This is rarely available with off-the-shelf tools. You can’t configure advanced commissions management, you can’t customize the way you work with metasearch engines , and you’re quite limited in terms of inventory that you don’t source directly from suppliers. So, if you’re thinking of a bespoke system and custom development route , check our article on travel APIs that generalizes supplier integration options in the industry, and learn how booking engines and OTA back-office work. What is a CRM in the travel industry?

In today's highly competitive tourism service sector, simply having a computer with Internet access and a telephone is no longer sufficient. Relying on such limited resources puts your company at risk of bankruptcy. That's why CRM for travel agencies has become an absolute necessity. Implementing a CRM program will not only boost tour sales but also ensure that your service quality remains at an exceptional level.

Top Rated Solution

Thryv has everything you need to communicate effectively, manage your day-to-day, and grow your travel business — all in one place!

By the way, no matter what industry you work in, you may find the following CRMs useful:

  • Zoho - the best CRM for small businesses
  • Salesforce - the best enterprise CRM system
  • Pipedrive - the CRM system focused on successful sales
  • Capsule  - best for sales teams wanting a simple and affordable solution
  • monday sales crm - easy to use CRM platform

To ensure successful automation, the CRM software needs to consider the specific requirements of this business, which include:

  • Strategic partner database: The software should efficiently process client information so that managers can quickly select and create profitable offers for them.
  • Tourism sector features: To enhance tour sales, it is important to incorporate effective marketing strategies and promotions.
  • Advertising: Keeping customers informed about "hot" tours can be done through IP telephony, SMS, or email notifications.

If you are a travel business owner, these 5 CRMs will come in handy:

What Does a Travel CRM Software do?

One of the key aspects of the tourism industry is its inherent seasonality, which leads to constant fluctuations in tour prices. To effectively navigate these changes and provide customers with accurate pricing information, a CRM system can prove invaluable for travel agencies. By automating processes and promptly notifying customers about the "real" price of tours, the CRM system enables travel agencies to stay responsive and adaptable in a dynamic market.

Main tasks of CRM for travel agency:

  • automate the work of your managers;
  • store all information about purchased tours for each of your clients;
  • promptly register new applications;
  • automate the system of discounts for certain tours;
  • quickly draw up documentation for tours;
  • record expenses with operators and customers;
  • integrate the program with the hotel and ticket booking system.

How to Choose the Perfect CRM for Travel Agents

In this article, we will consider the most popular CRM for tours and travel. Before making a decision to choose a particular software, consider the following points:

  • how the system is implemented;
  • technical features;
  • number of valid users;
  • how convenient the interface is;
  • what is your budget;
  • security of stored data.

Take special notice of the integration capabilities when choosing a CRM system. If the CRM system can seamlessly connect with other applications, you won't have to manually import data. CRM for Travel Agents 5 Outstanding Solutions

If you’re part of a travel agency, you’re likely familiar with the challenges of providing seamless travel experiences while juggling complex operational details, especially in the post-Covid world. Gone are the days when managing customer data through scattered Excel sheets or endless email threads was enough. Today’s travel business demands a more efficient and robust approach.

CRM for travel agents has become indispensable in today’s travel industry, transcending the traditional role of a mere customer database. This comprehensive tool revolutionizes how travel agencies interact with and serve their customers.

From automating workflows to providing valuable marketing insights, a well-implemented CRM system can be the key to offering memorable travel experiences that distinguish your agency in a competitive market.

In this blog, we will dive into the top 5 CRM for travel agents, each offering unique features and capabilities that cater to the diverse needs of this dynamic industry. We’ll explore its benefits, key features, and what you should consider when choosing the right CRM software for your agency.

What Exactly is a CRM for Travel Agents?

A CRM for travel agents is a software that aims to assist travel agents in streamlining their daily responsibilities. There are two distinct CRMs for travel agents that are used by them:

Travel companies collaborating with partners, resellers, and other travel agents utilize a B2B travel CRM. This form of travel CRM is designed exclusively for business-to-business interactions and updates.

B2C Travel CRM is designed for travel companies that deal primarily with individual travelers (as opposed to agencies or other businesses). Using a B2C travel CRM ensures travelers receive notifications and alerts throughout their voyage. This simplifies this procedure for the travel agent’s benefit.

CRM is software that helps travel companies, such as travel agents, tour operators, destination management companies, activity operators, and hotels, improve sales and customer retention by having quality conversations with prospects and customers.

Essential Features Every CRM for Travel Agents Must Have

In the complicated travel business, where details are important, and customer satisfaction is the key to success, ensuring your operations run smoothly is not just a nice thing to do—it’s a must.

The right CRM software is the glue that holds everything together, from planning a trip to getting comments after it. But not every CRM system is the same. It’s essential to look for key features that are made just for the travel industry. This ensures a holistic approach to managing customers, streamlined processes, and proactive problem-solving.

Let’s look at what features CRM for travel agents should have to achieve all these benefits:

  • Pre-trip Planning Capabilities

An efficient travel CRM should offer a holistic platform where agents can seamlessly plan and monitor bookings, from flights and accommodations to meetings and events. To prevent missing out on crucial details, the CRM should allow users to collate all reservations in a singular, easily accessible location.

  • Post-trip Follow-up Tools

After a trip concludes, the CRM should be able to send automated follow-up communications, ensuring clients recall their experiences and are encouraged to provide feedback. These tools should enable travel agents to promote special deals or discounts, fostering a loyal clientele base.

  • Enhanced Customer Service Functionality

To ensure consistency in service, the CRM should maintain detailed and suitable profiles of each customer, collating all their information and preferences. By analyzing customer data, the CRM should be able to anticipate potential concerns or issues, enabling travel agents to address them in advance.

  • Sales Pipeline Management

Track potential clients and business opportunities from initial interest to sale completion, clearly showing business prospects. The CRM should offer intuitive tools that help agents understand the readiness or hesitancy of a potential client, ensuring timely interventions.

  • Integrated Calendar System

To avoid scheduling conflicts and maintain organization, an ideal CRM should flawlessly integrate with prevalent calendar systems like Google Calendar. This feature ensures agents can simultaneously keep tabs on diverse events, from client meetings to internal team gatherings.

Additional Mention: B2C White Label Integration

For businesses aiming to scale, integrating with B2C white-label travel portals can be invaluable, expanding their service offerings and boosting their market presence.

In selecting a CRM for travel agents, ensuring it possesses these essential features will significantly enhance operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

The Advantages of Using CRM for Travel Agents

Customer relationship management software has proven to be a pivotal tool for travel agencies, effectively bridging the gap between customer expectations and agency deliverables.

Beyond contact management, a well-integrated CRM system can elevate the customer journey from first contact to post-trip feedback.

Let’s explore the benefits of CRM for travel agents and how these advantages can seamlessly translate into achieving the agency’s overarching objectives.

1. Streamlined Internal Productivity

Efficiency is critical to managing the intricate demands of travel planning. CRMs facilitate smoother internal processes, especially those integrated with project management tools. Workflow templates allow teams to standardize and optimize operations, ensuring comprehensive task coverage without redundancies.

Automation and task dependencies ensure sequential execution, enabling management to focus on oversight rather than micro-management.

2. Centralized Cloud-Based Database

Remote and on-site teams can access uniform data, ensuring consistent information across all touchpoints. Real-time updates prevent double bookings and ensure immediate information retrieval. Enhanced security protocols ensure data integrity and safety, including data backups and two-step verification.

3. Targeted Sales Initiatives

Segment clients for more precise and personalized sales approaches. Automated lead categorization and email drip campaigns allow for a balance between scale and personalization. Customizable email content and A/B testing refine communication strategies for better conversion rates.

4. Informed Marketing Campaigns

Feedback-driven data helps shape marketing direction, ensuring relevance and increased ROI.

Detailed client feedback forms provide insights directly into CRM, allowing agencies to understand and address client needs and preferences.

5. Improved Client Retention

A detailed client history enhances personalized interactions, fostering trust and loyalty. Regular follow-ups and loyalty programs incentivize repeat business and create a sense of exclusivity for potential clients.

6. Enhanced Customer Service

Centralized client data ensures informed interactions, irrespective of which agent handles the query. 24/7 multilingual contact centers assist, ensuring clients are never left stranded or uninformed.

7. Performance Analytics

Data-driven insights help identify areas of strength and potential improvement. Customizable analytics fields enable agencies to track specific metrics, from upsells to individual agent performances.

Incorporating a CRM for travel agents can be transformative, optimizing both front-end client interactions and back-end operations. Embracing these benefits ensures satisfied customers and a more efficient, informed, and agile business model.

How Does CRM for Travel Agents Function?

Travel agencies must deploy sophisticated tools to cater to their clientele better. CRM for travel agents exemplifies this approach. Custom-tailored to the unique demands of the travel industry, such software facilitates enhanced customer experiences by streamlining operations, ensuring attention to detail, and fostering deeper client relationships.

Here are some steps involved in working with this software

By seamlessly integrating operations, communication, and client management, a CRM for travel agents empowers agencies to deliver unparalleled service. It reflects technological innovation and is a vital tool in crafting memorable and hassle-free travel experiences for every client.

Table with a globe, plane model, and computer in travel agency

Best for user-friendliness

Suitable for growing businesses.

Ease of use is important. If you’re not able to operate a system, you’re not going to see ROI – that’s a fact. Tutterfly is simple to get the hang of, and even more so to use on a day-to-day basis. But that’s not the only trick it has up its sleeve…

Tutterfly CRM logo and interface

Integrated sales management. Dynamic performance modeling. Direct report filing and generation. Tutterfly brings all these features and more to your travel agency – as well as doing the basics right, of course. All of Tutterfly’s more advanced features are underpinned by a sparkling, spotless user interface ( UI ) , which is compatible across multiple devices – whether you’re selling packages from your office, at home, or on the go.

Tutterfly pricing

Tutterfly’s pricing scale is an interesting one.

Almost all CRM providers price their product in ‘tiers’, or plans. The cheapest level gets you the most basic version of the product – functional, but without the best features (or the finest customer support). Typically, the more you spend, the more features you unlock – and the more advanced version of the product you’ll receive.

With Tutterfly, that’s not so.

Tutterfly offers just one iteration of its product . There are no restricted features, or functionality cut off for its lower-paying users. In Tutterfly’s own words, “100% features – 0% compromise”.

Rather, what you’ll pay depends on your billing period – that is, how much of a commitment you’re willing to make to Tutterfly’s travel agency CRM software when you sign up. The table below should explain.

Essentially, the more cash you’re willing to front up initially, the less you pay.

Tutterfly also offers a free, 14-day trial for new users.

  • Fully customizable sales, leads, and opportunities reporting
  • Free 14-day trial available
  • Completely cloud-based
  • Its marketing capabilities aren’t as strong as some of the other travel agency CRM providers on this list

Best all-in-one CRM for travel agencies

Suitable for travel agencies of all sizes.

Combining bookings, billing, and branding with a firm focus on the checkout experience – plus a deep-rooted understanding of what makes travel agencies tick – Dolphin should meet the needs of all growing travel businesses.

Dolphin Dynamics CRM logo and interface

First of all, though, let’s address a different animal – namely, the elephant in the room. We’re talking about Dolphin Dynamics’ interface, which – quite frankly – looks as if it’s been pulled straight from the days of dial up internet. It’s not the most user-friendly travel agency CRM software, either. However, Dolphin Dynamics makes up for this with one (rather large) strength – pure, unadulterated functionality .

So what can it do?

Well, first and foremost, it’s a travel agency CRM. You can create integrated client and corporate profiles , helping you develop your agency’s professional relationships, and tailor your service to the public.

Secondly, it’s a powerful booking engine . You can adapt it to fit the look, feel, and design of your current website, and make yourself available to potential customers around the clock.

Thirdly, it’s a boon for both your lawyer and your accountant. As well as helping make sure that all travel has been booked and authorized within company policy, Dolphin automates transaction fee calculations and credit control functions , too.

There are a few more things it can do, but we’re running out of word count. How much does Dolphin Dynamics cost, anyway?

Dolphin Dynamics pricing

That, we can’t tell you.

Frustratingly, Dolphin Dynamics isn’t as forthcoming as its sea-going eponym – not when it comes to disclosing its pricing, anyway.

There isn’t any information online about how much Dolphin’s travel agency CRM software will cost you . You’ll have to get in touch with Dolphin directly to get an accurate quote – although the company does, at least, offer a free demo on request.
  • Offers various products for both business and leisure travel agencies...
  • … tour operators, too!
  • Lets you send out branded, personalized invoices and statements
  • Excellent workflow management tools
  • No free trial available
  • The only travel agency CRM provider here without transparent pricing
  • Dated interface

Best for data visualization and analytics

Suitable for the visual learners and number crunchers.

Do you prefer graphs and charts to documents and spreadsheets? You’re in the right place…

Kapture CRM logo and interface

Struggling to analyze the source of your most profitable clients? To understand which vacation offers are generating the most leads online, or which of your agents is selling the most packages? Kapture can help. With lead qualification, scoring, and auto-assignment capabilities , Kapture does a lot of the manual work for you. This intelligent CRM also visualizes your travel business’ key info – including your sales funnel ( pictured ) and bookings pipeline – in a way that’s as easy on the eye as the system (which is available from just $35 per month ) is on your wallet.

Kapture CRM package performance and lead stage visualization

Kapture pricing

Unlike Dolphin Dynamics (which doesn’t advertise its rates) and Tutterfly (which offers a single product, unbound by feature limitations), Kapture does conform to typical CRM pricing.

With Kapture’s travel agency CRM software, the level of functionality you’ll receive is tied directly to your budget .

Here’s how the plans break down.

Kapture’s ‘Essential’ plan comes with features that are just that: web forms for generating leads, omnichannel ticketing for customer service teams, and basic reporting tools .

Upgrading to Kapture’s ‘Professional’ offering introduces a biggie –  24/7 customer support . You’ll also be able to integrate your travel agency CRM software with the various social media sites your business uses, as well as your pick of the best ecommerce platforms around. Oh, and let’s not forget the ability to generate quotations, and accept online payments, too.

For larger businesses – or perhaps those simply seeking a greater degree of versatility – Kapture’s ‘Enterprise’ plan should be at the top of your wishlist. As well as contact and workflow management , your service team will benefit from customized ticket disposition – and you from a dedicated account manager .

If terms like ‘ IP whitelisting ’, ‘Custom API’, and ‘Sandbox’ mean nothing to you, though (and you don’t want them to mean anything, either), you’re better off sticking with a more basic plan. That, or reading on…

  • Provides preset email templates for itineraries, bookings, and packages
  • Allows you to generate invoices with a click
  • Enables you to securely save customer documentation (such as passports) for future bookings
  • It’s not the cheapest travel agency CRM option around, either!
  • 24/7 support is reserved for the higher-paying customers only

You're almost finished with our list of the top 5 CRM systems for travel agencies in the US . Time to start comparing quotes?

Simply hit one of the buttons below to start our quick questionnaire. It takes just 30 seconds to do, and by telling us more about your business’ specific requirements, we can help ensure that you receive the best, most personalized rates on travel agency CRM software.

Best for simplicity

Suitable for small businesses and startups.

Sometimes, less is more – and less annoying really can mean more productivity. While larger teams should probably stray away from this no frills, no nonsense travel agency CRM provider, small businesses should find plenty to love…

Less Annoying CRM logo and interface

We adore Less Annoying CRM’s interface. It’s colorful, it’s clean, and – most of all –  it’s simple . Whether you’re tracking your booking workflow to check flight or cruise details, or following up on a deposit that needs to be paid, you’ll be doing it all on a series of vibrant, customizable pipelines .

Less Annoying CRM customer profile example

This way, you’ll know exactly who to thank when a new booking comes in , and can make your communication with those customers even more personal.

Less Annoying CRM pricing

True to its name, Less Annoying CRM’s pricing tier is… well, you get the idea.

$15 per user, per month . That’s all you’ll pay – no tiers, billing period variations, or feature discrepancies. Just one of the cheapest CRM systems on the market, with just about all the functionality you’ll require to boss your travel business.

You can add or remove users at any time, and cancel whenever you like. Less Annoying CRM also offers a 30-day trial , so you can see if you like it before shelling out.

Not annoying in the slightest.

  • Free customer support included
  • You can be set up within an hour
  • 30-day trial, and you don’t need a credit card
  • May be a little too simplistic for the needs of some travel agencies

Best for providing personalized service

Suitable for businesses on a budget.

Personalized. Service. Two words that add up to a pretty powerful customer experience. But, as your business grows and you take on more employees, it gets harder and harder to provide travelers with that extra touch of the personal. Unless, of course, you’re using Capsule…

Capsule CRM logo and interface

Capsule enables you to empower your staff to deliver the same levels of personal service you’d provide yourself. You can create step-by-step processes within the CRM for the whole team to follow – prompting them to send a booking confirmation, or follow up on any concerns a traveler may have. This – combined with Capsule storing detailed records of your interactions with your customers – keeps everyone on the same page. Better still, it means that every one of your travelers receives the highest, most bespoke levels of customer service possible.

Capsule pricing

After a brief interlude with Less Annoying CRM’s simple, flat-rate pricing, we’re back to the tiered system. With Capsule, you’ll pay one of three rates, depending on the features you require:

The price tag may be alluring, but we’d only recommend Capsule’s ‘Professional’ plan for the smallest travel agencies. You’ll be capped at a maximum of 50,000 contacts (not actually a whole lot for growing businesses), while each user will face a minimum of 10GB worth of storage each.

Capsule’s ‘Teams’ plan offers scaling travel agencies more contacts and storage, while adding advanced sales reporting and custom activity types into the mix. It also ups the ante with intelligent tools for assigning users, roles, and records to specific teams or individuals , helping you stay organized.

For those with the loftiest ambitions (and the budgets to match), the ‘Enterprise’ plan should fit the bill. Even if a dedicated customer success manager and priority support isn’t your thing, there’s plenty to love about implementation and import assistance – not to mention that generous 200,000 contact limit.

But wait – did we mention the free plan?

You heard that right. Capsule offers a completely free version . And yes, there is a catch.

Namely, that’s the stringent limitations Capsule’s free plan imposes on your user and contact limits (two and 250MB, respectively). Perfect if you’re a one-person setup coordinating flights and hotel bookings from your den, sure. It’s not such a great idea for travel agencies looking to grow, though – trust us.

Both Capsule’s ‘Professional’ and ‘Teams’ plans can be tried free for 30 days.

  • Integrates with an impressive range of third-party apps, including Xero, G Suite, QuickBooks, and MailChimp
  • Slick mobile app
  • Free plan available, along with a generous 30-day free trial
  • Solid G Suite integration
  • Some online reviews suggest it can be a little tricky to implement

To get to grips with what CRM costs look like across multiple suppliers, head to our guide to comparing CRM pricing .

Remember, the usefulness of a CRM system for your travel agency isn’t limited to the features – or the providers – we’ve discussed here.

The impact that the right CRM’s features can have on your sales, service, and marketing efforts is profound – so it makes sense to invest some time in making sure you pick the right provider.

Fortunately, that time doesn’t have to be long – and, when you use our free quote-finding service, it’s all of about 30 seconds. Here’s what happens when you start our questionnaire.

1) You provide us with some details about your travel agency’s setup and requirements

2) Our algorithm has a think, and matches you with one (or more, if you’re lucky!) travel agency CRM software suppliers. Which companies you’re matched with is based on the responses you’ve provided, which tell us about your number of employees, industry, and the CRM software features you’re interested in.

3) These suppliers get in touch with you directly. The purpose? Offering you no-obligation quotes and advice about how CRM software can help take your travel agency to the next level.

You just have to be based in the US to be eligible. Good luck!

How We Test CRM Systems for Businesses

We tested 13 market-leading CRM systems to evaluate them in terms of functionality, usability, cost, scalability, and more so we can make the most useful recommendations to US businesses.

Our rigorous testing process means these products have been scored and rated in six main categories of investigation and 13 subcategories – in fact, we covered 84 areas of investigation in total . We then gave each category score a ‘relevance weighting' to ensure the product's final score perfectly reflects the needs and requirements of Expert Market readers – and that's our product testing algorithm in a nutshell!

Our main testing categories for CRM systems are:

Features: the functionalities and capabilities provided by the CRM software, such as contact management, lead and opportunity tracking, and task and activity management.

Help and Support: the resources and assistance available to users when they encounter issues or require guidance while using the CRM software.

Customization: the ability to tailor the CRM software to suit the specific needs and processes of the organization, e.g. customizing fields, layouts, and workflows.

Scalability: the ability of the CRM software to accommodate the growth and changing needs of the organization, such as the capacity to handle a growing customer database.

Price: the cost associated with using the CRM software. It includes factors such as licensing fees, subscription plans, and additional charges for add-on modules or features.

Team Structure – Sales CRM: determining if a platform makes it easier to manage large sales teams, including team dashboards, team hierarchies, and team inboxes.

Usability – Small Business CRM: assessing the simplicity of the interface, the ease of navigating through menus and options, and the overall user experience.

What is a travel agency CRM, exactly?

It’s a specialized kind of CRM software, built to empower businesses in the travel industry to manage their customer relationships.

That’s its central function, anyway. Because of the vast range of pain points and requirements of travel agencies, most CRM software catering to the industry has evolved. Now, travel agency CRM can also work as a booking engine, payment processor, and itinerary management tool – all rolled into a handy, affordable software package. Neat, huh?

Can I use travel agency CRM in the field?

You can indeed! Travel agency CRM is overwhelmingly cloud-based . That means it’s accessible from a web browser , rather than software that’s stored on a computer. Providing you have an internet connection, you can log in from anywhere in the world, and collaborate with your team in real time.

What’s a good CRM strategy for my travel agency?

CRM, as an acronym, refers to both the software (which we’ve discussed at length here), as well as the strategy. If you want to maximize the value of your customer relationships, you’ll need both.

Your CRM strategy should always revolve around using data to provide better, tailored, and more personalized service to your customers . By understanding each of your travelers’ destination history, preferred type of vacation, and maximum budget, you can offer them more relevant experiences, and provide deals and discounts too good to be ignored.

The ideal CRM strategy for a travel agency should also involve the use of various platforms for communicating with your travelers, such as social media. By aggregating these channels, and collecting your conversations with your customers into a centralized database, your CRM system will allow you to gain a deeper understanding of your client base’s needs.

For even more granular insights, you can consider integrating your travel agency CRM with a social listening tool . It’s one of the cheapest, most hands-off ways of finding out what your customers are saying about your brand and industry.

Which other industries use CRM?

Take your pick! CRM systems are used widely across almost all industries and disciplines. It isn’t just for office-based teams, either – there a loads of benefits to CRMs for construction , real estate CRMs , and CRMs used in healthcare . All there industries rely upon CRM as both strategy and software, as do creative and digital marketing agencies .

And don’t think big businesses are immune from the pull of CRM systems, either. Corporate behemoths such as Uber and Airbnb both famously rely on CRM, as do many of the country’s most lucrative and high-profile enterprises.

What is GDS? – A Simple Guide For New Travel Agencies

Many travel agents around the world are using the Global Distribution System (GDS) as their major booking channels. It is also responsible for the significant growth of the travel industry.

If you are brand new to the travel business, you will be probably wondering what a GDS is and why GDS is much important to develop travel agents website

In this blog, we are going to explore about GDS, its importance in the travel industry and what the future looks like for this primary reservation tool.

What is GDS?

Global Distribution System (GDS) is the brain of the travel industry. It is a computerized network system which provides real-time information to companies such as airlines, hotels, car rental and travel agencies. Each of these sectors uses GDS to view real-time inventory of services offered in the travel industry.

For example, using GDS, a travel agency can find the availability of hotel rooms, flight seats or cars on behalf of their clients and book through the same GDS.

How Do Travel Companies Use Global Distribution System (GDS)?

Travel companies use GDS to find the best airline ticket, car rental, hotel rooms, etc. for their clients. Information is customized and by the travel companies based on the preferences and itinerary.

When a traveler requests information from a travel company, the agent will find the most accurate and cost-effective itinerary. Travel companies are charged every time they access the GDS or they can buy a particular software offered by the GDS on a yearly basis. Also, an average person can never access the GDS without the help of a travel agency or a vendor.

Evolution of Global Distribution System (GDS)

The airline industry created the first GDS in the 1960s to track flight schedules, availability and prices. In fact, the GDSs were actually among the first companies that aided B2B e-commerce in the world. They were used by the airline industry to automate the booking system , but, later travel agents were also given access.

These are some of the major GDS systems in the industry.

Apart from these famous GDS systems, there are other smaller regional GDS systems such as Travelsky , a state-owned company in China and; KIU System , a PSS and GDS used in Latin America.

What Are the Benefits of Using GDS?

GDS will be the most important channel of distribution for airlines, hotels and car rental companies. Here are some of the major benefits of using Global Distribution System (GDS).

  • Effective in attracting international travelers
  • 24/7 access to inventory
  • Enables business models such as retail travel agency and OTA (Online Travel Agency)
  • Offer consumers increased pricing transparency
  • Travel agents can get a global platform with a strong market penetration
  • Provide best rates to your customers which no other system can provide
  • Place travel services to many clients without affecting your marketing budget

Frequently Asked Questions About GDS

1. how can i start using a global distribution system (gds).

To use a GDS, you have to be a professional travel agent. For that, you must have a proper industry ID such as an ARC (Airlines Reporting Corporation) or IATA (International Air Transport Association) number. Without this number, airline agencies will not know where to send your commission payments. Moreover, airline agencies will not allow unaccredited agents to issue tickets.

If you don’t want to get this certification, you can have a tie-up with an ARC or IATA host company who can book tickets on your behalf.

Some airlines will not allow you to issue tickets even if you have a full IATA license. To be on the safe side, before you sign for the GDS, make sure you talk to the particular airline to ensure if they will deal with you.

2. How much does it cost to use a GDS?

It depends on the specific service you want to use in the GDS. For example, if you want to use Amedeaus’s Flight booking software, they may sell it to you for $150-$160/year (contact the GDS provider to know the exact amount). The software will allow you to reserve tickets on any airlines.

3. Do I need a Global Distribution System (GDS)?

If you are a travel agent who falls under the below category, a GDS will be useful for you.

  • A corporate travel agent who books on behalf of corporate clients or an individual working at a corporation who needs to book flight tickets for all their employees
  • Complex itinerary agents who have steady clients with multiple travel plans
  • High volume booking of air-only travel

If you are a leisure agent who doesn’t book air tickets multiple times in a day, you probably don’t need it.

What is the future of gds in the travel industry.

The traditional role of GDS is changing and being challenged by the changes taking place in the travel industry. Many online travel websites and airlines are pushing and encouraging consumers to make bookings directly via their website. Some airlines are charging additional fees for tickets purchased via the GDS when compared to the pricing in their own website.

Some industry experts predict that GDS can turn into a direct corporate booking tool rather than a booking tool for travel companies.

For example, Southwest Airlines do not work with the GDS Company Worldspan; Sabre is used by American Airlines; PARS by USAir; TravelSky by Air China; and Worldspan by Delta. If you are an agent who uses WorldSpan, you cannot book with Southwest Airlines or you need to look for pricing directly on their website. Another newsworthy information is, agreements signed between airlines and GDS is on a renewal basis. Many in the travel industry are wondering if the airlines will renew their relationship with certain GDSs.

While changes will continue to impact the future growth of GDS, there will definitely be a role for them. Hopefully, they continue to evolve as they did from the old techniques in the 1950s.

How to Become a Travel Agent: Everything You Need to Know

A re you great at finding reasonably priced flights and hotel rooms? Does making itineraries and solving booking issues come naturally to you? If your answer is yes, you might want to consider becoming a travel agent. And if you're the designated "trip-planning friend," you're already halfway there.

You might think the the profession is outdated, but that's not what the data shows: According to the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA), 50 percent of travelers are more likely to use a travel agent now than they were in the past. Not only are travel agents needed, but the career's earning potential can be impressive, depending on the type of agent you choose to be. Use this guide to learn how to become a travel agent and kickstart your journey into a unique career.

What do travel agents do?

A travel agent's job is to ensure their clients have the best travel arrangements. Using their expertise, they offer advice and essential details about your trip, make your reservations, book flights and hotels, and manage your travel plans overall. Any hiccups regarding your accommodations are handled by them, and they are the best at finding money-saving deals. Travel agents prioritize your needs, like your vacation schedule and budget.

Their goal is to provide peace of mind throughout the trip-planning process so you can get the most out of your vacation.

What credentials do you need to be a travel agent?

You don't necessarily need a degree to become a travel agent, but getting some training within the field could be in your best interest. This not only makes you an attractive candidate to employers and agencies who may require a form of certification , but also helps you appear more qualified, which can help further your career in the long run.

Even though there might not be a degree in "travel agency" per se, you can opt for a related program like business, economics, or hospitality instead.

What do you need to become a travel agent?

There are different ways to become a travel agent, but anyone hoping to break into the field should definitely keep the following three points in mind.

Decide what kind of travel agent you want to be.

Having a specific focus on the kind of travel experience you want to provide allows you to build the knowledge and resources to best help those specific clients. Suppose you want to work in corporate travel: Building your skills according to your niche clientele and field will help you sharpen the skills you need to develop your expertise.

Learn about the travel industry and its trends.

The travel agency field is constantly shifting, so it's important to stay up-to-date on industry changes and trends to know what you should be offering clients. People's preferences are ever-changing, so knowing what's hot and what's not is crucial. Spend time learning which places are popular and unpopular based on the season, or which restaurants are staple visits. This shows a solid and up-to-date understanding your clients will appreciate.

Build your communication and interpersonal skills.

A large part of being a travel agent is advising your clients and earning their trust, which doesn't happen overnight. Presenting yourself as knowledgeable and approachable can encourage them to trust your judgment and recommendations. This is especially important if you're not working with a travel agency, because you'll have to rely more on your brand and relationships instead of leaning on a company's reputation.

Maintaining a healthy balance of communication between you and your clients is also essential, which means scheduling phone calls, in-person meetings, keeping up with emails, and any other form of communication your client prefers.

Get certified if you can

Getting a certificate can be pricey and cost hundreds of dollars . So, if this option is not feasible for you, that's understandable. However, while certification isn't a requirement to become a travel agent, it can certainly help you throughout your career. Here are a few certificate programs to consider.

Certified Travel Counselor

This Travel Institute certificate requires at least five years of experience and a Certified Travel Association certification. This course focuses on marketing and building consumer relationships. CTC costs $550 to complete the course and $600 for the CTC Fast Track.

Certified Travel Industry Executive

CTIE is also backed by the Travel Institute and requires at least five years of field experience. This $550 program includes courses on travel business, marketing management, bookkeeping, and travel law.

ASTA Verified Travel Advisor

This certificate is given by the American Society of Travel Advisors and teaches applicants about the legalities of travel and how to solidify relationships with consumers. The nine-course program also focuses on ethical travel advising, agency law, and travel agency compliance.

For ASTA members, the course is $399, and for nonmember independent contractors, it's $598. Travel Advisor nonmembers pay the steepest price, which is $729, and $179 for recertification.

How much do travel agents make?

According to Indeed , travel agents make an average of $53,924, and salaries can range between $30,131 and $96,506, depending on where you live. But other factors can affect an agent's earning potential, like working independently instead of for a travel agency.

A travel agent's income also depends on their area of travel. The Hotel Agency Review 2023 report revealed that corporate and luxury travel agents earn much more than agents who focus on Disney and cruise trips.

Your experience level can also impact your earning potential, as agents who have worked in the field longer are typically viewed as more qualified.

Do travel agents get discounts on flights?

Being a travel agent doesn't automatically mean you get tons of discounts and deals, but they do have access to perks that can help make planning trips easier and less expensive. Travel agents have the inside scoop on reduced rates because of their relationships with hotels and airlines. As a result, agents share these negotiated prices with their clients to help them save. Agents can, of course, also benefit from this insider knowledge and save money on their own trips.

Thanks to their agents, clients can enjoy luxury accommodations at high-end hotels like Hyatt Privé, Hilton Impresario, Marriott STARS&Luminous, Four Seasons Preferred Partner, and Mandarin Oriental Fan Club, to name a few. These perks range from spa services and later checkout times to room upgrades and complimentary breakfast.

How do you make money as a travel agent?

There are several ways a travel agent can make money in their field beyond selling travel packages or working for an agency.

Travel agents can charge a service fee, which is a base pay clients cover along with any other charges.

Travel agents can also make commissions from their contracts with hotels, tour/excursion companies, cruises, car rental services, and airlines. Add-ons like insurance can also help boost an agent's income, if their client wants it.

Booking group tours can increase a travel agent's earnings because their commission is based on how much their clients purchase, so more people means more accommodations. For example, booking travel for destination weddings or family reunions is an excellent way to book multiple hotel rooms. It's such a lucrative strategy that some agents make group booking their niche, because managing just a few a year can bring in a substantial profit.

What is a typical UK postal code?

geographic-faq

As a travel agent, I often receive inquiries from clients about the postal code system in the UK. Understanding and using postal codes correctly is essential for smooth travel arrangements and efficient delivery of mail. In this article, I will provide a comprehensive guide to typical UK postal codes and answer some commonly asked questions.

A typical UK postal code consists of a combination of letters and numbers that help identify a specific geographic area. The postal code is divided into two main parts: the outward code and the inward code. The outward code includes the postcode area and the postcode district, while the inward code includes the postcode sector and the postcode unit.

For example, some typical UK postcodes are “SW1W 0NY,” “PO16 7GZ,” “GU16 7HF,” and “L1 8JQ.” The outward code in these postcodes is the first part, such as “SW1W” or “PO16,” which represents a specific area or district in the UK. The inward code, which follows the space, is the second part, such as “0NY” or “7GZ,” that further divides the area into sectors and units.

A valid UK postcode is one that has the correct outward and inward codes, ensuring there is no room for confusion or misinterpretation. Having a valid postcode is essential for location-based marketing, as it allows businesses to target specific areas and promote their products or services to people living in those areas. For example, if you want to open a new store on Carnaby Street in London, you would want to promote it to people living in the surrounding postcode areas.

Contrary to popular belief, not all UK postcodes have seven characters. The length of a UK postcode can vary between five and seven characters, including both letters and numbers. Most postcodes start with one or two letters, followed by one or two digits. However, some central London postcodes may have one digit and one letter, such as “EC2M.” The inward code typically consists of one digit and two letters, such as “0NY” or “7GZ.”

It’s important to note that the UK does not use zip codes. The UK postal system relies on postcodes, which consist of up to seven letters and numbers. Unlike zip codes used in the United States and the Philippines, UK postcodes are not just numeric.

When writing an address in the UK, it is customary to include the postcode at the end of the address. The postcode should be written on a separate line, following the town or city. To ensure clarity, it is recommended to write the town or city and postcode in capital letters.

Now, let’s address some frequently asked questions about UK postal codes:

FAQs about UK Postal Codes:

1. are all uk postcodes 6 digits.

No, UK postcodes can have a variable length ranging from six to eight characters. Each postcode is divided into two parts separated by a single space: the outward code and the inward code.

2. Do UK postcodes have letters?

Yes, UK postcodes are composed of both letters and numbers. The first part of the postcode identifies a postal district within a city or town, while the second part identifies a specific street or block.

3. Is a zip code like a postcode?

In essence, both postal codes and zip codes serve a similar purpose, which is to provide additional information for accurate mail delivery. However, zip codes are primarily used in the United States and the Philippines, while the UK uses the postcode system.

4. What is the largest postcode in the UK?

The largest postcode area in the UK is “IV” in the Scottish Highlands. This vast and sparsely populated region makes it the largest postcode area in the country.

5. Why is my postcode not recognized in the UK?

If you live in a new property and your address or postcode is not recognized, it could be because Royal Mail has not yet activated your postcode. To activate your postcode, you can contact Royal Mail directly via phone or their website.

6. Where are the best postcodes in the UK?

The best postcodes in the UK can vary depending on various factors like location, amenities, and desirability. Some notable postcodes that made the list include SA3 in Mumbles, Swansea, NG1 in Hockley, Nottingham, and M4 in Ancoats, Manchester.

7. When did UK postcodes start?

The first postcodes were introduced on a trial basis in Norwich in 1959. The code consisted of the first three characters representing the city name and the last three characters indicating a specific street. Larger firms and businesses received their own individual codes.

8. How many numbers are in a British postcode?

A British postcode is a combination of between five and seven letters/numbers. It defines four different levels of geographic units and is used by the Royal Mail for sorting mail across the United Kingdom.

In conclusion, understanding the UK postal code system is essential for travel agents like myself. A valid postcode ensures targeted marketing and proper delivery of mail. By familiarizing yourself with typical UK postcodes and answering common questions, you can provide accurate information and assist clients effectively.

Which big employers have the largest and smallest gender pay gaps? New data reveals all

The difference between what men and women are paid at the biggest employers in Australia has been revealed for the first time: from brewers and builders to banks and bakers.

Data divulged under new laws show massive gender pay gaps at some of our most well-known businesses, including many where women are their key customers.

At brewer Lion, maker of XXXX, Tooheys and Four Pillars gin, the median base pay gender gap is just 1.4 per cent.

It is higher (8.4 per cent) if you include all forms of remuneration such as bonuses and penalties, but still far below the national average of 14.5 per cent and a sliver of those at some of Australia's biggest household names.

Sarah Abbott, a human resources executive at the brewery group, understands the challenge.

"There are a number of colleagues in other organisations who are very nervous for these announcements. And my advice would be start now: The sooner you start, the sooner you're going to be able to create change," she says.

That might be too late.

More than 5 million workers get to judge if what their employer says about gender equality — and does — match up.

The median gender pay gap at airline Jetstar is 53.5 per cent, meaning that for every $1 a male worker makes at the company, women earn, on average, 46.5 cents.

It's scarcely better at Virgin (41.7 per cent), Qantas (39.3 per cent), the Commonwealth Bank (29.8 per cent), Westpac (27 per cent), insurer IAG (27.5 per cent) or Suncorp (20.5 per cent).

The figures in this article are based on "base pay". If you use a "total remuneration" figure that takes in penalties and bonuses, some gaps change. Jetstar's gap decreases to 43.7 per cent. Commonwealth Bank's increases to 29.9 per cent.

Companies have been submitting their data to the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) for almost a decade, which created anonymised industry-by-industry reports and told companies where they sat in their sector.

Despite opposition from some business groups, the Labor government changed the law and led to this moment of radical transparency: the publication of the gender pay gaps at every company in Australia with more than 100 employees.

See below for the gaps at companies including supermarkets, football clubs, schools, healthcare providers, law firms and more — or your employer.

Power giant AGL acknowledges it has work to do. It's one of many companies with a base salary pay gap (30.3 per cent) more than double the national average.

Sarah Gilbert 1

With a decade in the job — and distinctive rainbow-flecked hair — everyone at the Loy Yang power station in Victoria's Latrobe Valley seems to know Sarah Gilbert.

"I found that AGL in particular, there's always been a respect for people as they are rather than necessarily your gender or your cultural background," she says.

"It's always been about respect for the person."

The head of risk and assurance, she helps the company to comply with laws that govern the coal mine and power station.

Historically it has been a male-dominated field, but she's never felt uncomfortable.

"And I've never had to queue for the toilet," she says, laughing.

Sarah Gilbert 2

As the company tries to close the gender pay gap, it includes people like Ms Gilbert in leadership programs, attracting more female apprentices to the well-paid field, and having a commitment from the CEO down to changing the company.

"In the engineering space, we're seeing more females coming through. Certainly, in terms of our operators, we're seeing more females, literally at the coalface," she says.

"There's a really clear indication that, yeah, they're serious about it."

Complex gap

The gender pay gap — the difference between what men and women are paid in the same organisation — is a  persistent problem .

WGEA, which collates the information, describes it like this:

"Gender pay gaps … show the difference between the average or median pay of women and men across organisations, industries and the workforce as a whole."

As Qantas notes in a statement, the figures show what's happening across the whole organisation:

From Qantas Group chief people officer Catherine Walsh: "This does not mean women are paid less than men to do the same jobs at Qantas and Jetstar, but shows there is a significant under-representation of women in highly paid roles like pilots and engineers across airlines globally."

It is not about "equal pay for equal work".

Not equal pay

The fact that men and women should be paid the same for the same work has been enshrined in law for decades.

Any employer not doing that is breaking the law.

Woman holding hand of bronze statue of woman with sign saying 'no more male and female rates, one rate only'

The gender pay gap is more complex and comes about through factors such as gender-dominated or previously segregated industries.

For example, teaching and "caring" professions have typically been dominated by women and paid much less than male-dominated fields such as construction.

Women are also more likely to have time out of the workforce to raise children or care for elderly relatives. Additionally, there is a history of gender discrimination against women and historic barriers to better wages and financial security, such as making up a higher proportion of part-time roles.

It's for these reasons that companies that are reducing their gaps have tended to do similar things: increasing the proportion of women in management roles, turning maternity leave provisions to "paternity leave" (and encouraging men to use it), and auditing where the lowest-paid roles in a company are.

'Significant step'

In a statement ahead of the release, WGEA chief executive Mary Wooldridge said workers being able to see inside their own companies was a "significant step forward" for accountability.

Mary Wooldridge sits at a desk with a computer in the background.

The figures will now be released annually, meaning the public will be able to see any improvement.

"We'll be able to see if the commitments they make and articulate in relation to their understanding of the gaps and what they're going to do about them translates into the outcome of reducing their gender pay gap," she says.

The public pressure from workers inside companies — and media coverage of the data — is part of the plan.

And it's worked elsewhere.

Worked in the UK

The UK government first published the information in 2017, prompting an explosive response as high-profile companies were forced to defend and fix large gaps between what they paid their male and female staff.

Airline RyanAir (a 72 per cent gap) and bank Barclays (44 per cent) were among the biggest. The data made a substantial impact  in reducing the gap in future years.

UK gender pay gap data

Since publishing the broad data (2010) and the specific company-by-company information (2017), the gender pay gap has fallen by almost a quarter for all employees.

The reason?

Companies must submit their internal data to WGEA, with the submission signed off by a chief executive or person at a similar level.

At the same time, companies are invited to provide an "employer statement" to give context to their results.

For example, one of the reasons the airlines have large gaps is that the intake of pilots remains overwhelmingly male. Their well-paid jobs contrast with customer-facing staff at airlines who tend to be female and lower-paid.

As Virgin Australia notes in its statement:

"The 2023 median gender pay gap … of 41.7 per cent is driven by the demographic profile of our organisation. We have a larger proportion of men occupying higher paying roles, such as pilots and aircraft engineering roles … we are focused on improving the demographic profile of key roles across our organisation over time."

Insurer IAG makes similar points about its 8,400 staff.

"While IAG has a greater representation of women than men across our workforce, there are fewer women than men at senior career levels where role pay is typically higher, and fewer women than men in higher-paying roles," its statement reads.

"While recognising we have further work to do to achieve gender pay equity … we welcome the increased focus and transparency through WGEA publishing these important metrics and look forward to reporting on our progress in future years."

It is not compulsory for companies to provide the contextual information. Much of it has  just been released and will be added to this article when it is made available. Companies mentioned in this article have been contacted for comment before publication.

The gap remains broad, even at companies that champion women.

Women undercut

Some of the most popular brands in Australia that sell goods largely to women have substantial gender pay gaps.

For every $1 a man makes working at the following companies, this is what a woman makes, on average:

  • At retailer City Chic Collective, owner of City Chic and Avenue:  42.3 cents (gap is 57.7 per cent)
  • At retailer Fast Future Brands, owner of TEMT and Valleygirl:  47.9 cents (gap is 52.1 per cent)
  • At clothes chain Forever New:  49.9 cents (gap of 50.1 per cent)
  • At jeweller Pandora:  52.8 cents (gap is 47.2 per cent)
  • At swimwear retailer Seafolly:  55.5 cents (gap is 44.5 per cent)
  • At active-wear retailer Lorna Jane:  63.7 cents (gap is 36.3 per cent)
  • At clothing retailer Sussan:  73.1 cents (gap is 26.9 per cent)
  • At accessory giant Lovisa:  73.6 cents (gap is 26.4 per cent)
  • At chain store Decjuba:  79.1 cents (gap is 20.9 per cent)

All of these companies were contacted for comment.

Forever New pointed out the implications of having a 1,436-strong workforce where the vast majority were women working in retail stores, many in entry-level positions. There are just 65 male employees in the organisation, but 62 of them work in the head office which has larger salaries.

In a statement, it defended its result.

"As a brand, Forever New has policies in place to ensure equal remuneration between women and men and offers flexible work arrangements for females to continue to progress in their careers."

Further, it says 84 per cent of the best-paid quarter of its workforce are female "and women occupy 89 per cent of manager level roles".

The front of a women's clothing store with the words Forever New lit up. Mannequins and clothing racks line the store.

Decjuba has a similar-sized workforce and an even starker gender split: it's 99 per cent female.

"The pay gap at Decjuba is skewed due to the small number of male team members, many of whom are in head office roles," the company said in a statement that listed policies on parental leave, flexible work and visa sponsorship.

"We are proud to have a balanced gender representation in our executive leadership team."

City Chic says three-quarters of general manager and operational manager roles are held by women, but it doesn't employ many men in its stores because of the nature of the product.

"City Chic is committed to gender equality in remuneration and, where appropriate, gender diversity in its employment practices. Given the nature of City Chic's business (plus size women's fashion), a limited number of roles are appropriately open to gender diversity, with the majority of its personnel being in customer-facing sales roles."

Shortly before publication, lawyers for Lorna Jane sent a letter threatening legal action if the reporting of its average total remuneration gender pay gap (37.1 per cent, higher than its base salary gap) did not place the figure "in proper context".

The letter from HopwoodGanim lawyers notes that at the time the data was taken, Lorna Jane employed 1,382 women and 47 men, with women making up 97 per cent of the workforce and the entire staff of its 101 stores.

"As part of Lorna Jane’s commitment to providing flexible employment conditions for its valued team, a very large number of its female staff enjoy being able to work in casual and part-time capacities. In contrast, the vast majority of Lorna Jane’s male employees work in full-time, non-retail roles."

As the gender pay gap reflects the difference in average earnings between women and men in the workforce, the tiny proportion of men working in Lorna Jane — all in roles outside of retail service — would grow the overall gap.

Brands including 2XU, Jenny Craig, Tupperware Australia and The Body Shop were published on a list of "non-compliant" employers which did not submit a report on time.

Consumers will choose

Silvia Salazar, a senior research fellow at the Bankwest-Curtin Economics Centre at Curtin University, cites the examples of FairTrade coffee and Rainforest Alliance certification for products as she thinks about the potential impact on some of the brands listed.

"If you are somebody that cares about gender equality, you are probably going to shop elsewhere if you see that the company that you really like is offering really low pay for women, has no women in management and so forth," she says.

Dr Silvia Salazar

It comes down to values: what a company talks about and what it does.

"You expect that a company that mostly caters for women will care also to have these women enjoy equality within their companies."

Dr Salazar describes it as akin to the issue of " greenwashing " — where companies market products or services as environmentally sustainable when they're not.

"You can have the same thing with this gender equality. I guess this publicly available data will show whether companies are actually doing what they said. Or not," she says.

Brewing change

A 2016 audit at brewer Lion exposed big gaps in how men and women were paid — and prompted action.

"We gave people changes to their base pay to say: 'What you're currently on isn't right. And we want you to be paid fairly for your role and your level'," says Ms Abbott, who runs the diversity, equity and inclusion function at Lion.

Sarah Abbott 1

"That was done on the roles, positions that we recognised needed to be fixed.

"We needed to right the wrongs, draw a line in the sand and say: 'This is not okay on our watch'."

But the changes went further. The company banned discussion of previous salaries during job interviews and paid people according to the position they held.

"We don't want to bring on a poor behaviour that's replicated over (other) organisations into our own. So we pay for the level and the role, not for what the person was paid for before," she says.

Beer kegs on shelving at XXXX brewery in Brisbane.

With a gender pay gap now at 1.4 per cent, Lion is an example of both the work required inside companies that want to tackle the issue — and the change possible.

"We really welcome the opportunity for organisations to share their gender pay gap," Ms Abbott says.

"It's just basic equity. It's black and white. To me, I don't think there's any question around why and why not we should be doing it."

Froth and bubble

"What's not to love about brewing?" laughs Celsa Wilton, the brewing manager for Castlemaine Perkins, the iconic home of XXXX near the banks of the Brisbane River.

Celsa Wilton 2

With a background in science, Ms Wilton was drawn in by the technical challenge of the process and now helps brew millions of litres of beer every year.

When she started 30 years ago she was the "first and only female at the table" but now has a team with a 50:50 gender split. Acknowledging that it hadn't been easy, Ms Wilton says it's now a point of pride that incoming staff don't experience a work environment dominated by one gender.

Celsa Wilton 1

"There are so many advantages to trying to close that gender gap. Not because we've got a box to tick or a quota to meet, but you want that diversity in thinking in the brewery," she says.

"We can offer a different way of problem-solving, a different way of coming up with solutions," she says.

"There are so many benefits to having that diversity within any team."

A long list

Figures reveal the gender pay gap at some of Australia's biggest brands. Here are a few of the base pay gender gap provided to the government agency WGEA and published on Tuesday:

  • Rival Coles:  6 per cent
  • Smaller rival Aldi : 5.3 per cent

  • Commonwealth Bank:  29.8 per cent
  • Westpac: 27 per cent
  • ANZ: 22.7 per cent
  • NAB: 16.4 per cent

In a statement, the nation's biggest lender says the Commonwealth Bank has "a long history of promoting gender equality and working to improve the position of women in our workplace, and society more broadly" and has set clear public goals around its commitment.

"On an aggregate level, CBA has achieved gender pay equity on a 'like for like basis' – that is, men and women are paid equally for performing the same or comparable work. CBA's median pay gap calculated by WGEA reflects many factors influencing the gender pay gap more broadly, including the types of roles performed by women, the seniority of those roles and the composition of the workforce."

Women make up more than half (54 per cent) of the bank's workforce but 71 per cent of the lower-paid customer service roles in branches and call centres.

Westpac also pointed to its leadership in gender equality and its desire to pay people fairly.

"Our gender pay gap is heavily influenced by the shape of our organisation, with many women being employed in roles in contact centres, operations and our large retail branch network," a spokesperson said in a statement.

"Our focus is on improving the gender pay gap by increasing participation of women in senior roles as well as specialist areas such as institutional banking and technology."

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Leaked recording a 'wake-up call'; Ukraine 'launches cyberattack on Russian defence ministry'

Germany's ambassador is seen at the Russian foreign ministry after the leak of a military recording - which a former UK minister says is a "major breakdown in secure communications". Meanwhile, Ukraine claims it has launched a cyberattack on Russia's defence ministry.

Ukraine and Spain have begun discussions on a bilateral agreement on security guarantees, according to Volodymyr Zelenskyy's office.

Officials discussed the structure of the future deal and agreed a schedule for further negotiations.

More than 30 countries have already joined the G7 Joint Declaration of Support for Ukraine, including the UK, Germany, France, Denmark and the Netherlands.

Members of the G7 presented a plan for long-term security commitments for Ukraine at the NATO summit in July last year.

The plan agrees individual countries will provide bilateral support to help Ukraine push back against the Russian invasion and deter future aggression.

They also cover areas such as sanctions, financial aid and post-war reconstruction.

A leading Belarusian human rights group has said thousands of people in the country have been convicted on politically driven charges over the last three years.

The Viasna human rights centre said at least 4,690 people have been convicted on politically motivated charges since the August 2020 presidential election that fuelled major protests.

The actual figure could be higher as activists don't know all the convicts' names, the group said.

A spokesperson for Viasna, Pavel Sapelka, said the scale of repression in Belarus is even broader than in neighbouring Russia.

He said at least 1,300 people faced criminal investigation on political grounds last year alone.

"Even a suspicion of disloyalty is enough to trigger political repressions," he said.

The contentious 2020 vote, which handed President Alexander Lukashenko his sixth term in office, had caused mass protests which authorities responded to with sweeping crackdowns.

More than 35,000 people were arrested at the time and thousands beaten in police custody.

Mr Lukashenko has relied on subsidies and political support from his main ally, Russia, to survive the protests.

He then allowed Moscow to use Belarusian territory to send troops into Ukraine in February 2022.

Two rescuers have been killed as they were putting out a fire caused by an earlier attack, Ukraine's interior minister has said.

The strike on the Kramatorsk area, in the eastern region of Donetsk, also injured a further three first responders.

Oleg Martynenko and Bohdan Ravlyk, aged 29 and 31, were named as the two men who died.

Interior minister Ihor Klymenko said: "Our rescuers have no weapons, they risked their lives so that others could live."

The State Emergency Service's spokesman, Oleksandr Khorunzhyi, said in August last year that over 70 Ukrainian rescuers had been killed in Russian attacks while doing their job.

Some 17 million packages of antidepressants were sold in Russia in 2023, according to Russian daily newspaper Vedomosti.

This is a record for the last few years, the paper said.

Sales of the drugs were at 15 million the year before, and 11 million the year before that.

Russian media reports say the increase in demand surged after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

The NATO member has reopened the Kucova air base following a $54m refurbishment by the Western military alliance.

It is aimed at bolstering security in the Western Balkans amid an increased threat from Russia, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said.

The base was originally opened in 1955 when Albania was a communist state.

"Albania, with this base that we are reopening today, was considered a strategic outpost" for the Soviet Union at the time, Mr Rama said.

Three Turkish Bayraktar drones and two new Black Hawk helicopters will be stationed at the base.

Albania's airspace is protected by Italy and Greece.

Two fighter jets flying from NATO's Aviano Air Base in Italy landed in Kucova to mark the reopening of the airfield.

A civilian has been killed by cluster munitions in the Zaporizhzhia region, according to local governor Ivan Fedorov.

The village of Rizdvianka was struck twice with the munitions, with the second killing a resident, Mr Fedorov said.

Rizdvianka is about 80 kilometres east of the regional capital, Zaporizhzhia.

What are cluster munitions?

The controversial weapons can be legally used in conflict, but international law dictates they only be used on military targets.

They are delivered by planes, artillery or missiles, and release up to 100 submunitions as they open into the air.

This means they can destroy several targets at once - making them useful to scatter bomblets across airfields or on a convoy of enemy vehicles.

But up to 40% of the bomblets often fail to explode, meaning swathes of land are left at risk of explosions for years after.

We're hearing more now from Hungarian foreign minister Peter Szijjarto, who earlier said the Hungarian and Ukrainian leaders were not yet ready for a meeting.

Mr Szijjarto said his country wants the world to be a more peaceful place, claiming conflicts in Ukraine and other parts of the world could have been avoided if Donald Trump had been president.

"The name of Donald Trump is synonymous with both peace and good Hungarian-American relations," Mr Szijjarto said in New York today.

It's a claim that has also been made by the former US president himself - although critics of Mr Trump would argue he has effectively helped to block further aid to Ukraine.

There are also fears that if Mr Trump came into power again this year, it would have devastating consequences for Ukraine's fight against Russia.

Hungary's right-wing populist Prime Minister Viktor Orban is set to meet Mr Trump on Friday at his Florida home Mar-a-Lago, a person briefed on the plans told the Associated Press.

Mr Orban and Mr Trump have been long-time allies - with both also maintaining ties with Vladimir Putin.

News that the Russians have intercepted a conversation between senior German defence leaders is embarrassing, and exposes the risk of complacency concerning the use of insecure communications systems.

It is relatively simple to intercept telephone conversations, so Russian claims that they have recorded a 38-minute discussion between senior German military officials seems plausible.

The Russians claim that the recording is clear evidence that France and the UK have military forces on the ground in Ukraine helping the Ukrainian military operate Western missile systems. Although it is not clear whether the audio track has been doctored by the Russians, the German military officials should have been well aware of the risks involved in having secret conversations on insecure phones.

But the interesting question is why the Russians have admitted to eavesdropping on this occasion. Russia routinely intercepts calls, but by admitting it has intercepted a call, it will know that all military organisations will tighten up procedures and the opportunity to intercept sensitive information will be lost.

So why now?

Ukraine desperately needs more weapons. The UK's Storm Shadow has provided Ukraine with a very effective long-range weapon that has been used to target Russian bridges, military HQs and a range of other targets, but supplies are running low.

The German Taurus missile offers a similar capability to Storm Shadow - it has a 300-mile range, 1000lb warhead and flies at around Mach 1.

Germany is considering ways in which it can increase military support to Ukraine, but Germany's Chancellor Olaf Scholz has - to date - made clear that he has no intention to send Taurus to Ukraine, or put German "boots on the ground".

But Russia will be concerned if Taurus becomes an option for Ukraine that it could prove decisive. Therefore, as Russia has consistently done when the West has considered increasing the military aid for Ukraine, it has taken the opportunity to threaten Germany with consequences should a long-range missile like Taurus be considered.

Regardless, the West continues to be concerned about Russia's long-term military ambitions in Europe. Ukraine needs weapons, and soon, and the West is running short of time in which to provide them.

A member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard charged with leaking classified military documents has pleaded guilty.

Jake Teixeira has admitted carrying out one of the most serious US national security breaches in years by sharing Pentagon documents on social media.

The 22-year-old, who has been in custody since his arrest last April, struck a plea deal with prosecutors who plan to ask a judge to sentence him to over 16 years in prison.

The deal meant he plead guilty to six counts of wilful retention and transmission of classified information, but will not face charges for further violations of the Espionage Act or other crimes.

While serving as an airman, Teixeira held a top-secret security clearance.

Prosecutors said he began accessing hundreds of classified documents related to topics including Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The leaks potentially exposed hundreds of pages of intelligence about Russian efforts in Ukraine and spying on US allies.

They included information about potential weaknesses in Ukraine's defences and details of support being provided by its allies.

You can read this piece from last year on what the highly classified documents said here...

As we've been reporting, a recording has leaked of a conversation between high-ranking German officers where they discussed the country's Ukraine war strategy.

The audio was released by Margarita Simonyan, the editor-in-chief of state-controlled Russia Today.

What was said?

The top officers discuss how the air force could provide technical support for the delivery of Taurus missiles in a hypothetical situation.

So far, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has blocked sending the long-range missiles to Ukraine, fearing it would bring Berlin too close to direct contact with Russia.

One officer spoke of a "long" and "short" path to implementation.

They also discussed the potential targeting of the Kerch Bridge, which connects the annexed Ukrainian territory of Crimea with mainland Russia.

One of the officers said the Taurus has the potential to reach the bridge despite it being a difficult target.

The conversation also referenced British soldiers on the ground in Ukraine - although Rishi Sunak's office said a small number of personnel" are on the ground in Ukraine to provide security for diplomats and support Ukrainian troops, including medics.

How has Germany reacted?

German authorities have confirmed the authenticity of the recording, with Mr Scholz calling the leak a "very serious matter".

"It will now be investigated very carefully, very intensively, and very quickly," he told reporters.

However, defence minister Boris Pistorius suggested Russia had used a level of "choreography".

He claimed the leak was timed to deflect attention away from Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny's funeral

"It is highly unlikely that they reacted so quickly, so it was certainly coordinated and choreographed, and is intended to reinforce the myth that we are working on a war against Russia, which is completely absurd," Mr Pistorius said.

What did Russia say?

Russian authorities and commentators have reacted with anger, saying they are seeking answers over the recording.

"We demand explanations from Germany. Official Berlin has to provide them promptly," Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Telegram.

"Any attempts to evade answering questions will be viewed as an admission of guilt."
