Take a bike ride on the nationally recognized Virginia Creeper Trail, check out local artists, or see a show at the historic Barter Theater downtown. Abingdon is home to more restaurants per capita than New York City – with a great meal for just about any taste and plenty of cool places to stay including the Martha Washington Inn & Spa. You’re also a short drive from Bristol – the birthplace of country music.

10. Dayton, OH

Dayton is best known as the place that gave birth to modern aviation. The Wright Brothers called Dayton home and the city is full of historic places that will give you a front row seat to the history of the “flying machine” which is how the first airplane was trademarked. One of the original Wright Brothers bicycle shops is still in tact, and you can see an original Wright Flyer at the Carillon Historical Park.

Take a ride over to Huffman Prairie Field where the brothers tested out there invention or tour the mansion where they lived. Best of all – Dayton is home to the Museum of The United States Air Force – an unbelievable airplane museum that consists of four different hangars and impossible to see in a single day. See rare military aircraft and even go on board a retired Air Force One plane. And it’s free!

11. Springfield, IL

This is a great road trip idea for history lovers – Abe Lincoln’s hometown of Springfield, Illinois! You can spend an entire weekend exploring where Lincoln served in the Illinois legislature, worked as a self-taught lawyer, and lived with his family. You can tour the only home he ever owned which is beautifully preserved along with the neighborhood where he lived. Lincoln is also buried in the local cemetery beneath a massive tomb. You can also enjoy some Route 66 history and tour the state’s capitol building as well as the Governor’s mansion.

If you thought Holland was in Europe – you are correct!  But, America’s Holland is located in Michigan and it’s a cool town worth exploring.  Pick up a pair of wooden shoes and walk along the streets of downtown for great shopping and lots of dining options.  (Fun fact:  the streets of downtown Holland are heated so they don’t have to plow snow in the winter. Genius!) 

Holland is also home to the only authentic Dutch wind mill that is still operational in the U.S.  If tulips are your thing – visit during the annual  festival  each spring.  The Holland Bowl Mill is also very cool – ask them for a quick tour of the production and find a one of a kind wooden bowl to take home!

13. Louisville, KY

Of course most people know Louisville as the place where the famous Louisville Slugger baseball bats are made, but that’s just the start!  Downtown Louisville offers a wide variety of attractions from the Muhammad Ali Center to Churchill Downs where the Kentucky Derby takes place.  For an adventure – try out the world’s only underground zip line at Louisville Mega Cavern or a cruise on the historic Belle of Louisville.  Lots of great restaurants for all tastes and cool places to stay including 21c and The Galt House Hotel.

Bill’s Advice:  Louisville is a great weekend trip!  If you love Kentucky Fried Chicken, pay your respects to Col. Sanders himself.  His grave site is a short drive from downtown.  Just follow the yellow line at Cave Hill Cemetery and you’ll find it.  Don’t be surprised if you see a bucket of chicken sitting on the tombstone.  No, seriously. 

14. Fort Wayne, IN

Fort Wayne is probably not a spot that’s been on your radar but Indiana’s second largest city has a lot going on.  Its minor league baseball stadium is award winning and its local library is known as the best genealogy research center in the country.  The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is one of the best designed kid-friendly zoos around and a brand new, beautiful  riverfront project  has injected new energy into the town.  You’ll also find lots of opportunity for outdoor recreation.

Bill’s Advice:  For something unique, visit the headquarters for Sweetwater – one of the largest music and instrument stores in the world.  Vera Bradley is also headquartered in Fort Wayne and has events during the year.  

15. Columbus, OH

Columbus is one of the easier road trips from Cincinnati. Known to locals as “C-Bus” and the capital city of Ohio. It’s been going through major growth over the last decade and is a destination worthy of a road trip. The sprawling downtown is easily accessible with the new CBUS Circulator, free to use for visitors. Check out the Short North Arts District for galleries, dining, and locally owned shopping. Local attractions include the Franklin Conservatory and Botanical Garden, the COSI Science Museum, Columbus Art Museum, and the Columbus Zoo which is one of the best in the country. Be sure to take a free tour of the Ohio state capitol building as well!

16. Pittsburgh, PA

Famous for having more bridges than any other U.S. city, Pittsburgh is a terrific destination for a weekend or extended getaway. You can take in a baseball game with beautiful views of the Sixth Street Bridge, take a ride on the historic Duquesne Incline, or visit the city’s quirky bicycle museum. If you grew up watching Mr. Rogers, Pittsburgh was his home town and you can spend a day exploring all things Mr. Rogers – including seeing the very sets from the iconic television show and his puppets! Ohio is the birthplace of aviation , and it has two Dayton legends to thank: Wilbur and Orville Wright, the brothers who invented and flew the first aircraft. This aviation history abounds throughout the city, starting with the Wright Brothers National Museum in Dayton’s Carillon Historic Park. Beyond aviation artifacts like the 1905 Wright Flyer III plane, the Carillon Historic Park also features an onsite brewery and grill , with beers crafted using a traditional 1850s-era brewing process. 

The National Museum of the United States Air Force , the largest and oldest military aviation museum in the world, is another Dayton gem. This hub, with 350 aerospace vehicles and thousands of artifacts, brings the U.S. Air Force’s history to life. And the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center , housed in the same building the Wright brothers used for their main business, a print shop, rounds out Dayton’s aviation attractions.

The best bites near the museum include craft beer and tater-tot heaven Warped Wing, named after the Wright brothers’ design feature of “ wing warping .”

How to get to Dayton

Driving is the best way to get from Cincinnati to Dayton; public transit is available via Greyhound, but takes triple the time. The route is an easy one-hour drive up Interstate 75, with rental cars available throughout Cincinnati and at the CVG airport. If time allows, add a stop at Dayton-favorite Marion’s Piazza , a no-frills but flavor-packed pizza spot, located just off I-75 (near the Dayton Mall).

Yellow Springs, Ohio

Why go: For the LGBTQI-friendly community

Spirited getaway Yellow Springs is one of Ohio’s most unique small towns—and it’s also among the most welcoming, with higher LGBTQ+ members than most other Ohio communities. Peace signs, pride flags and Black Lives Matter window displays show that the city is proud of its inclusive values. Mark your calendar for late June when the Yellow Springs community comes together to celebrate YS Pride , a gathering with a parade, tailgate and home-decorating contest.

Yellow Springs, also the home of comedian Dave Chappelle (who’s rumored to be opening his own Yellow Springs comedy club ), is a town of 3,400. Its downtown is packed with yoga studios, artist markets, and restaurants, including Sunrise Café , a local favorite with ingredients sourced from 20 nearby farms.  Yellow Springs Brewery is bike-friendly, with an outdoor taproom adjacent to the 80-mile multipurpose Little Miami Scenic Trail . 

How to get to Yellow Springs

Driving is the easiest mode of transport between Cincinnati and Yellow Springs. It’s just over an hour's drive up Interstate 75 to Interstate 675. Rental cars are available throughout Cincinnati and at the CVG airport. Stop for Midwest comfort food at Nick’s Restaurant , a chill American joint known for its award-winning wings sauces and fried vegetables.

Red River Gorge Geological Area, Kentucky

Why go: Climb and hike through glacier-carved landscapes

Red River Gorge Geological Area , known locally as “The Red,” is an action-packed oasis in Kentucky’s Daniel Boone National Forest—and one of the best day trips from Cincinnati, particularly for adventure seekers. The Red is legendary among rock climbers, with steep sandstone walls offering thousands of routes. Climbing guides like the local Bluegrass Climbing School lead rock climbing and rappelling trips.

But this Kentucky getaway adventure extends well beyond climbing. Red River Gorge boasts over 70 trail miles along canyons, gorges, and arches. Some of the most scenic routes include the three-mile Natural Bridge & Laurel Ridge Trail, as well as the four-mile jaunt to Gray’s Arch. Mind-blowing underground kayaking and boat tours also wind through The Red’s caverns.

While you’re in town, don’t miss Miguel’s Pizza, famous in the climbing world for kick-starting The Red’s climbing scene in the 1980s. In addition to lunch, dinner, and margaritas, Miguel’s offers a rock-climbing store, along with their own accommodations nearby.

How to get to Red River Gorge

Red River Gorge is two hours southeast of Cincinnati. Car is the easiest way to get from point A to B, with the drive mostly following Interstate 75 south to Interstate 64 east, before hitting several backstreets on the way into The Red. Build in time for a stop in Winchester, Kentucky, the birthplace of beer cheese —where you can sample this local delicacy across the town’s Beer Cheese Trail .

Mason, Ohio

Why go: Ride the rollercoasters at Kings Island

Cincinnatians grow up testing their roller-coaster limits at Kings Island , a theme park in suburb Mason, just 25 minutes from the Queen City. Kings Island is among the best Cincinnati day trips, with 100 rides, shows, and attractions, plus 15 roller coasters, including the award-winning Orion, one of only seven giga coasters (rollercoasters with drops of 300 to 399 feet) in the world.

Food and drinks abound at Kings Island. For a local favorite, grab pizza from family-friendly  La Rosa’s , praised for its subtly sweet sauce. And Cincinnati’s famous Skyline Chili , beloved by many for its spaghetti with sweet chili on top, is available in the park as well.

Kings Island is easily doable in a day, but you can also stay overnight at the adjacent new Kings Island Camp Cedar , a luxury resort and RV park with onsite pools, camping, restaurants, bars, walking trails, and more.  It’s less than a mile from the theme park.

How to get to Mason

Via car is the fastest way to get from Cincinnati to Mason. It’s a quick 25-minute drive to the northeast along Interstate 71 north. The park is right off the highway. You can also take the local Metro’s 71X Kings Island Express bus to the park. This bus stops in downtown Cincinnati and travels north to the park. 

Indianapolis, Indiana

Why go: Visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Museum

Like Cincinnati, Indianapolis is a charismatic Midwest city with its own vibrant culture, from art museum Newfields , one of the oldest museums in the country, to the White River State Park , an urban getaway which plays host to the Indianapolis Zoo, the Indiana State Museum and an art museum dedicated to Indigenous and western art. Of course, no Indy trip is complete without a stop at its most famous attraction: the Indianapolis Motor Speedway .

Erected in 1909, the speedway welcomes some of the fastest car races in the world, including the Indianapolis 500 on Memorial Day weekend (although different races run all year). To learn the history of this adrenaline-pumping track, visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum , with 37,500 square feet of exhibitions, including cars, racing records, and memorabilia. 

Need a post-race bite or drink? Stroll a few blocks for hearty fare at Barbecue and Bourbon or craft beer at Daredevil Brewing , home to Indiana’s best-selling IPA, the Lift Off IPA. Both spots are less than one mile south of the track.

How to get to Indianapolis

Indianapolis is one hour and 45 minutes northeast of Cincinnati on Interstate 74. It’s most accessible via car, with rentals available throughout town and at the CVG airport. Grab a snack halfway between Cincinnati and Indianapolis in Batesville, Indiana, where the historic and recently renovated hotel, The Sherman , boasts a new biergarten and bier hall serving authentic German fare.  

Lexington, Kentucky

Why go: Explore the Kentucky Bourbon Trail

Lexington is arguably the best place to soak up Kentucky’s culture, with attractions like the Keeneland horse-racing course and a host of stops to try the state’s signature beverage: bourbon. There are  14 distilleries within 45 miles of Lexington and Kentucky makes 95 % of the world’s bourbon. See the Kentucky Bourbon Trail for proof.   

The 250-mile Kentucky Bourbon Trail includes more than 30 distilleries, with shuttles and tours from Cincinnati, just 80 miles away. Cincy Brew Bus hosts private Bourbon Trail day tours to several distilleries like Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey, and Woodford Reserve. Executive Transportation offers similar all-day excursions from Cincinnati as well. 

If you’d rather hit multiple distilleries along the trail for a weekend-long trip, go a bit further west to Louisville, 90 minutes from Cincinnati, where Mint Julep Tours offers two and three-day options to safely hop from distillery to distillery. You can also do a self-guided bourbon trail tour following this map . (Always have a designated driver).

How to get to Lexington

Private tours offer transportation from Cincinnati to Lexington. If you’re driving yourself, the ride is roughly one hour and 20 minutes south along Interstate 75. Louisville is 100 miles southeast along Interstate 71. Tour transport or rental cars are suggested, as public transportation isn’t efficient. If you’re driving to Lexington, make a quick stop north of the city in Georgetown, where restaurant Local Feed pairs hip digs with drool-worthy comfort fare (don’t miss their crispy fried chicken).

7 Epic Day Trips From Cincinnati, Ohio That Are Less Than 3 Hours Away!

If you live in the Cincinnati, Ohio area (or are visiting), you are smack dab in the middle of some incredible destinations. These places make for excellent day trips from Cincinnati since they are all within in driving distance.

As someone who is based in Cincinnati, I’ve made it easier for you to plan your day trip from Cincinnati by narrowing it down to my top seven favorite spots. Read on to find out where they are plus my tips on what to do and see during each day trip.

Hocking Hills State Park – Logan, Ohio

Distance from Cincinnati: 135 miles – 2.5 hours

If you are looking for an outdoorsy day full of nature Hocking Hills is a great option. Hocking Hills is a State Park located in Ohio that is home to many great hiking trails, nature programs, and events to enjoy.

Hocking Hills Park is home to seven hiking trails ranging from shorter, simpler trails to longer and more challenging trails, making it the perfect spot for hikers of all skill and capabilities. In addition to hiking, you can sign up to learn a new activity like archery or fishing, or do some conservation work and volunteer for the litter pickup program.

While a day trip from Cincinnati to Hocking Hills State Park is more than doable, you might change your mind when you see the beautiful options for campgrounds and cabins at this state park.

Columbus, Ohio

Distance from Cincinnati: 100 miles – 1 hour 35 minutes

You can’t compile a list of day trips from Cincinnati without of course including the capital of Ohio! Columbus has so much to offer and is for a great way to spend the day without having to drive too far.

There are so many incredible experiences in Columbus but to highlight some of the most popular I have to mention Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, COSI, and the Easton Town Center:

• Columbus Zoo & Aquarium : The Columbus Zoo is home to 11,000+ animals with nearly 600 unique species. Ranked in the top five for zoos in the United States, the Columbus Zoo is an experience that you do not want to miss out on if you visit the Columbus area with kids or if you’re an animal lover.
• COSI : COSI, an acronym for the Center of Science and Industry, is an interactive Science and Research Museum. This museum is home to so many amazing exhibits that allows visitors to engage in experiments and activities while simultaneously learning the science and history of what is in front of them. Some of the most popular exhibits include “Space” (visitors ride in a space capsule and see what it is like to be an astronaut), “Life” (explore the human body and learn what makes it function), and “Progress” (travel through time and see how technology has evolved beginning in 1898 all the way up to the technology of today).
• Easton Town Center: If shopping is your thing, the Easton Town Center is something you don’t want to miss during your day trip to Ohio’s capital. This is a great way to spend the day because there is so much to offer all within one location. The campus is home to 300+ stores to fit all your shopping needs, there are some of the most delicious dining experiences if you’re looking for something to eat, and if you are wanting some more entertainment, you can even catch a movie at the largest movie theater in the state of Ohio: the AMC Theater in Columbus.

Lastly, if you haven’t seen it before, don’t head back to Cincinnati before stopping to see the stately capitol building.

Indianapolis, Indiana

Distance from Cincinnati: 112 miles – 1 hour 50 minutes

Being the largest city in the state of Indianapolis, the city has so much to do that it makes for a great place to spend a day. Some of the most popular attractions in Indianapolis include the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, and White River State Park:

• Indianapolis Motor Speedway: If you are a fan of Nascar I’m sure you are familiar with the Indy 500. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is home to the Indy 500 as well as multiple other Nascar races and is the largest sports venue in the world. Seeing the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a very cool experience and one I would highly recommend whether you are into racing or not.
• The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis: The Indianapolis Children’s Museum is the largest children’s museum in the world. With the incredible exhibits that it has to offer, I would highly recommend checking it out no matter what age you are. Some of the most popular exhibits include “All Aboard!”, “The Power of Children”, and “Beyond Spaceship Earth”.
• White River State Park: The White River State Park is home to many Indianapolis attractions including the Indiana State Museum, the Indianapolis Zoo, the Eiteljorg Museum, and Victory Field, the latter of which is home to the Minor League Baseball team, the Indianapolis Indians.

Young’s Jersey Dairy – Yellow Springs, Ohio

Distance from Cincinnati: 72 miles – 1 hour 15 minutes

This one may not be the most obvious day trip to those outside of Ohio but it is actually a very popular location and one that is a great place to see some farm animals and have some fun!

Young’s is a dairy farm and while there you can meet, pet, and feed the animals that live on the farm.

In addition to the animals, there is also a putt-putt golf course, a dairy store, and a batting range. There is also ice cream for sale for a delicious treat to finish off your day at the farm.

Throughout the year the farm also hosts seasonal events. Some of these include an annual Easter egg hunt, a pumpkin patch and haunted hay rides during the fall, and a tree farm in where you can choose and cut down your very own Christmas Tree in the winter.

Dayton National Air Force Museum – Dayton, Ohio

Distance from Cincinnati: 60 miles – 1 hour

Being the shortest distance on our list, the Dayton National Air Force Museum is a great place to spend your day and you won’t have to drive very far to get there from Cincinnati.

The National Museum of the United States Air Force is located at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and it known as the oldest and largest museum focused on military aviation in the world.

While there you will see some of the aircrafts and artifacts from the United States Air Force’s history. Not only is it a great day trip from Cincinnati, but it is also an affordable one. Admission and parking for the museum is completely free! The only thing you will be required to pay for is if you choose to participate in additional attractions such as the flight simulators or the Museum Theatre.

If the National Air Force Museum isn’t enough to fill your day, Dayton also has plenty of shopping, dining, and other attractions in the area to add to your itinerary.

Lexington, Kentucky

Distance from Cincinnati: 83 miles – 1 hour 20 minutes

If you love horses, you’ll love a day trip from Cincinnati to Lexington, Kentucky. Since Cincinnati is right on the southwest border of Ohio, the main sights of Kentucky aren’t as far as you might think! In less than 90 minutes you can find yourself surrounded by horse farms and race tracks.

Definitely don’t miss a visit to the Kentucky Horse Park where you can visit the International Museum of the Horse and see the Hall of Champions where former horse champions now live. A visit to Keeneland horse track is also a must-do for horse racing fanatics.

Non-horse related activities to do in Lexington include touring the Mary Todd Lincoln house, where you can learn more about the life of Abraham Lincoln’s wife; walk around the Arboretum where you can learn more about the natural world in and around Lexington; and take a tranquil hike through the Raven Run Nature Sanctuary. Lexington is also known for its many breweries and distilleries.

And, if you want to go to the most famous horse race of all, you’ll have to go to Louisville where the Kentucky Derby is held each year. Which brings us too our last day trip of this list…

Louisville, Kentucky

Distance from Cincinnati: 99 miles – 1 hour 30 minutes

Louisville blends southern charm and big city living with a perimeter of gorgeous countryside. It’s also home to Churchill Downs, the racetrack where the Kentucky Derby is held each year.

Even if you’re not in Louisville during the Kentucky Derby, you can still tour Churchill Downs. A visit to the Kentucky Derby Museum will also teach you more about the history of the storied horse race.

If you’re more into baseball than horses, check out the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, where baseball bats are produced for the Major League.

Louisville also has several Bourbon distilleries where you can learn more about the distilling process and taste some local Kentucky Bourbon.

If you are looking to plan a day trip from the Cincinnati area, I would highly recommend one of the above options. These are all great ways to spend your day and make for a quick and affordable escape from your everyday life.

Brookville Lake

Tucked away in Indiana's picturesque Whitewater Valley, Brookville Lake is one of the best places in the area for swimming, boating, fishing, and other water recreation activities. The lake stretches for approximately 17 miles from north to south, and its shores offer more than 25 miles of hiking trails as well as two public beaches equipped with dressing rooms, snack bars, and a lifeguard on duty. Visitors are welcome to use the picnic areas at the beaches, but there are also plenty of excellent restaurants in the area if you'd rather go out for lunch.

As the capital of Ohio, Columbus is an obvious choice for a day trip destination, but you might be surprised by just how many things there are to do here. The city's many distinct districts offer almost an incredibly wide range of experiences for visitors to enjoy; lunch on authentic bratwurst in the German Village, browse the boutique shops in the Short North Arts District, and check out the up-and-coming arts scene in Franklinton. If you're traveling with children, check out the exciting LEGOLAND Discovery Center or the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium for an afternoon of family-friendly fun.

The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force offer the opportunity to gawk at more than 360 missiles and aircraft free of charge, and the Wright Cycle Company complex gives visitors a glimpse at the workshop where Orville and Wilbur first came up with the idea to build a flying machine. If you need a break from learning about aviation, you can visit the Dayton Art Institute, kayak down the river, or stroll through one of the city's beautiful parks.

Indianapolis

If you'd like to spend the day in a different state, a day trip to Indianapolis fits the bill perfectly. Almost everything in the downtown core is within walking distance, so you can park the car and visit the Indianapolis Museum of Art, have lunch at one of the incredible restaurants on Mass Ave, and perhaps catch a live music show at the Old National Centre. Visitors with children can stop by the Children's Museum or spend the day at the zoo, and if you're looking for something more active, you can rent bikes and cycle along the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.

A fascinating blend of Southern and Midwestern charm, Louisville is a beautiful riverside city with a long list of attractions. Some say the city was built on bourbon, so take some time to stop by a distillery and check out a few of the bars on the Urban Bourbon Trail before visiting the Muhammad Ali Center, the elegant 19th-century, Conrad-Caldwell House, and the unique Speed Art Museum. Visitors also flock to the city for the Kentucky Derby in May, but don't worry if you can't make it; you can learn all about the history of the race at the fascinating Kentucky Derby Museum.

Yellow Springs

Conveniently located approximately six miles off both the I-70 and the I-675, the town of Yellow Springs is known for its relaxed, welcoming atmosphere and its bustling downtown streets. Aha a hands-on adventure.

In 2016, a group of moms got together to explore the possibility of creating a hands-on, interactive children’s museum for Lancaster, Ohio. Today, the 8,000-square-foot adventure space they dreamed up features more than 60 hands-on exhibits and activities for children ages 8 and under. The nonprofit museum provides a place for children to learn as they engage in their most important “work” of play.  

Behringer-Crawford Museum

This hidden gem is tucked away in Covington’s Devou Park, just 15 minutes south of Downtown Cincinnati. The Behringer-Crawford museum is great for the school aged crowd, featuring four levels of interactive fun. Highlights include a prehistoric gallery, trains exhibit and giant riverboat. Once you’re finished inside, head outside to the playscape: a free and contained handicapped-accessible green space which includes kid-sized log cabins and caves, a wooden replica of a flatboat, a cruise line swing and several gardens.

Butler County Donut Trail

Road trip to Butler County and hit the trails… the donut trails! Butler County’s Donut Trail features a dozen of the most delightful donut shops in the Midwest… all just a drive away! Pick up a Passport at any participating donut trail location, and enjoy a day (or two, if you want to pace yourself) on the most delicious trail in town.

Big Bone Lick State Park

Located just 35 minutes south of downtown in Union, KY, Big Bone Lick State Park is a hidden gem that definitely deserves a visit or two! Big Bone Lick State Park is a 813-acre state park that your kids will actually want to visit. Highlights include hiking, an interactive museum and real bison! The best part? Admission is FREE !

Boonshoft Museum of Discovery

Explore, play and be inspired at this Dayton museum’s exhibits that include more than 60 animals native to Ohio. And here’s a bonus: Boonshoft is part of the Association of Children’s Museums Reciprocal Network, meaning you can get half-price tickets if you’re a member of the Duke Energy Children’s Museum here in Cincinnati.

Carillon Historical Park

Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve

This 268-acre preserve protects one of the most spectacular dolomite and limestone gorges in the state. In some areas, cliff overhangs have broken off, forming massive slump blocks scattered along the valley floor.

Columbus Center of Science and Industry (COSI)

COSI Columbus “inspires the scientists, dreamers and innovators of tomorrow.” This dynamic hands-on science center is fun for all ages (its Children’s Museum is awesome), and the  Dinosaur Gallery is reason to go on its own.  Highlights include a 6-foot-long mechanical T. rex model that walks in place; an 8-foot tall Titanosaur femur; a huge, three-horned Triceratops cast; and (for you Jurassic Park fans), a 100-year-old piece of fossilized amber preserving an ancient feather. Definitely worth the trip!

Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

If you think a zoo is a zoo , think again. Columbus Zoo and Aquarium offers a one-of-a-kind experience that’s truly aimed to get families thinking about animals, the environment and conservation. The Columbus Zoo is huge; in each direction you’ll experience different habitats and species, all designed to be interactive and accessible. The polar bears, for example, could be seen both above ground and below; to access the below-ground viewing area, you’ll follow a mining-style path with signage about the bears’ habitat and how to protect this species from environmental and human threats. And of course, once you’re down there, you’re treated to a front-row view of the bears happily diving and swimming in the water.

Fort Ancient

Located in Oregonia, OH, this National Historic Landmark boasts the largest and best-preserved manmade earthworks in the country. It’s 100 acres of beautiful mounds that were used for protection, ceremonies, functional and social purposes a long, long time ago.  Fort Ancient is a living lesson in Ohio history that will definitely leave an impression on your kids.

Great Wolf Lodge

You don’t have to travel far in search of a great “staycation” — adventure awaits in Warren County, Ohio’s Largest Playground, at Great Wolf Lodge! Kentucky Horse Park

Located in Lexington, the Kentucky Horse Park is an easy 90-minute drive from Cincinnati (closer to an hour for you Northern Kentuckians!), making it the perfect day trip. With lots of kid friendly attractions and activities, the Kentucky Horse Park is definitely a gold medal winner – and a must for horse-obsessed kiddos!

Just an hour and a half away in the other Columbus (Columbus, IN), youngsters can explore three floors of interactive fun at KidsCommons. Get the ultimate bubble blowing experience in Bubble-ology, create a mini masterpiece in Kids-at-Art and investigate the science of optics and music with the Gateway Bridge Laser Harp. But the piece de resistance for kids of all ages is the giant toilet slide. You read that right – in ExploraHouse, kids can slide down the museum’s world famous giant toilet! LEGOLAND Discovery Center

Long’s Retreat

Created in 1971 by Eric “Tip” Long with a few campsites and a small lake,  Long’s Retreat Family Resort  has now grown into one of the top tourist attractions in Southern Ohio. With over 400 acres, Long’s Retreat offers permanent camping, cabin rentals, swimming, go karts, water slides, carousel, arcade, mini golf, and more!

Louisville Slugger Museum

Baseball fans of all ages will love this Louisville museum. A larger-than-life baseball bat welcomes visitors, who can get an up-close look at the magic during daily guided factory tours. Guests will see bats being made on every tour, every day. Everyone receives a miniature souvenir bat at the end of the tour! Personalized bats can be ordered when you arrive for pick-up after your tour, or they can be shipped.

National Museum of the U.S. Air Force

Ohio Caverns

The largest of all Ohio caves, this park is open throughout the year, offering guided tours for families. At a steady 54 degrees, the Ohio Caverns feature some of the most unique formations in America.

Otherworld is an interactive art installation built by more than 40 artists. Located in Columbus, Otherworld is a 32,000-square-foot space with large-scale works, secret passages and postmodern playgrounds that are reminiscent of laser tag or being inside a virtual reality (welcome to the matrix).  Otherworld was recently named one of TIME for Kids World’s Coolest Places — and it truly is. Each of Otherworld’s 47 (!) rooms is completely unique. There are endless spaces to explore, and like any art exhibition, the experience is personal and dynamic . It’s a completely immersive art experience that’s completely unlike anything else in the world.

Pyramid Hill

Pyramid Hill is a true hidden gem – it’s tucked away in Butler County off a rolling country road. But to be fair, nothing about Pyramid Hill is “hidden;” this outdoor sculpture museum is big and bold. A bright red sculpture stands at the entryway; and from there, the hills and valleys of Pyramid Hill’s 300 acres are covered with larger-than-life sculptures that demand to be seen (and admired). This 60-acre outdoor sculpture park is totally awesome and especially beautiful in the spring!

Red River Gorge

The Red River Gorge is a unique, scenic natural area featuring “gorge”-ous sandstone arches and towering cliffs. Outdoor enthusiasts come to the gorge year round to enjoy hiking, camping, canoeing, wildlife viewing and other recreational opportunities.

Serpent Mound

The Great Serpent Mound in southwest Ohio is the world’s largest serpentine effigy mound. Writhing in a seemingly effortless way, the mound winds through trees on a cliff overlooking the Brush Creek Valley of Adams County.

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis

35-minute drive from Cincinnati

Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park and Museum is one of the largest outdoor art displays in the Midwest! Located in Hamilton, this park covers 300 acres of outdoor space and is completely free and open to the public. You’re welcome to tour the grounds and explore the more than 80 sculptures.

The on-site museums include an art gallery with pieces of local and internationally-renowned creators, as well as an Ancient Sculpture Exhibit with pieces from the ancient Greeks, Syrians, Romans, Egyptians, and Etruscans.

Also, the park is surrounded by hiking trails, expertly bringing art and nature together.

Learn About History in Ripley | Ripley, OH

1-hour drive from Cincinnati

The Village of Ripley is a short drive outside Cincinnati. While the village offers a wide variety of attractions, including camping, boating, swimming, and shopping, it’s best known for its historic role in the Underground Railroad.

Today, you’re welcome to tour the village’s historic sites and learn how they helped slaves attain freedom in the 19th century.

Step Back in History at Carillon Historical Park | Dayton, OH

History lovers will enjoy exploring the house and grounds at Carillon Historical Park, a historic property showcasing some of the most interesting and important moments in Dayton’s history.

While the main house dates from 1940, other properties in the park were built in the 18th and 19th centuries. These include several family homes and a one-room schoolhouse.

In addition to the properties, you can enjoy live demonstrations of historic tools, such as a 1930s letterpress print. There’s also an impressive collection of historic vehicles and appliances, including an original Wright Flyer, Liberty aircraft engine, Frigidaire, and 1912 Cadillac.

Located just a short drive from Cincinnati in the City of Dayton is the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery. This museum is dedicated to the study of natural history and has been adding to its collections since 1893!

Today, it offers amazing exhibits throughout the year, including historical artifacts, fossils, and much more. All told, the museum has 1.8 million artifacts on display, including the Discovery Zoo, fragments of the Dayton meteorite, and relics from Native American cultures.

It even has relics from ancient Japan, Egypt, the Philippines, Oceania, and China. And, there are special exhibits throughout the year for toddlers, children, and more!

Eat Some Ice Cream at Young’s Jersey Dairy | Yellow Springs, OH

1-hour, 15-minute drive from Cincinnati

If you love ice cream, put Young’s Jersey Dairy on your list of places to visit. Located just a short drive outside Cincinnati, this dairy and ice cream parlor has been serving signature flavors since 1960.

Today, Young’s serves more than 60 flavors of rich ice cream made on site, as well as 30 flavors of gelato. You can also find milkshakes, sundaes, and other seasonal flavors.

Order ice cream on its own or as a follow-up to a delicious meal. You can even watch ice cream and cheese being made fresh through one of the dairy’s observation windows.

Explore Nature at the Edge of Appalachia Preserve System | West Union, OH

The Richard and Lucile Durrell Edge of Appalachia Preserve System is located in West Union Ohio. This stunning nature preserve covers more than 20,000 acres and is one of the richest and most diverse ecosystems in the American Midwest.

Here, you’ll find every land type from forests to riverbeds, promontories, waterfalls, and prairies, as well as an endless variety of plant and animal life. The preserve is a migratory corridor for animals and birds.

Visit the Serpent Mound | Peebles, OH

The Serpent Mound is one of the most fascinating day trips from Cincinnati Ohio and intriguing ancient sites in the Midwest. This ancient effigy is shaped like a snake with a curled tail and is thought to be a remnant of the Adena peoples who lived in the area between 800 BCE and 100 CE.

The mound includes three burial sites. Its age and cultural significance have earned it a spot on the list of World Heritage sites alongside the Egyptian pyramids, the Taj Mahal, Stonehenge, and the Great Wall of China.

Snorkel in the Clearest Lake in Ohio | New Paris, OH

In New Paris Ohio is Natural Springs, the clearest lake in the state. The 12-acre lake is surrounded by natural rock formations, once part of a stone quarry. These days, the spring is a resort and campground with RV hookups and tent pitches, as well as cabin rentals.

Most amazingly is the crystal clear water of the spring, which allows perfect visibility, making the site a great place to swim, fish, and snorkel. You may also rent paddleboats, scuba dive, or enjoy the many amenities of the resort, including fire pits, beach volleyball, and a playground.

Dive Deep Into the Ohio Caverns | West Liberty, OH

1-hour, 50-minute drive from Cincinnati

Just a morning ride from Cincinnati is one of Ohio’s most amazing natural attractions — West Liberty’s Ohio Caverns. These stunning caverns are widely known for their enormous size, fascinating stalagmite formations, and startlingly bright colors.

The caverns were first discovered in 1897 and remain almost exactly as they were 125 years ago. You can enjoy guided tours that lead 2 miles into the earth, exploring caves that range in height from 30 feet to 103 feet.

The adjoining park has a visitors’ center, picnic tables, playground, and gift shop where you can buy fossils and other souvenirs to remember your trip.

The Center of Science and Industry, popularly shortened to COSI, is one of the most famous museums in Columbus. The exhibits feature all things science related, with kid-friendly features and seasonally rotating attractions.

Depending on when you visit, you might be able to touch a real meteorite or observe how scientists train rats. But, live demonstrations are only a tiny part of what COSI offers.

The museum partners with science exhibits from around the world, so you can always find something new when you visit. You might see real dinosaur fossils, drive a Mars rover, watch a show in the planetarium, or ride in a submarine!

Learn at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium | Columbus, OH

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is widely renowned as one of the best animal exhibits in the American Midwest.

While visiting the African Safari Wildlife Park, you’ll get the chance to interact with and even feed some animals that you’ve never seen before! The drive-through tour includes species such as Bactrian camels, giraffes, bison, and llamas.

Hike at  big bone lick state historic site | union, ky.

30-minute drive from Cincinnati

Just 25 miles outside Cincinnati is Big Bone Lick State Historic Park, located across the Kentucky border. This amazing nature preserve is part hiking area, part outdoor museum. It’s an extremely popular spot for outdoor enthusiasts and anyone interested in history, geology, and animal life.

The park features fascinating ancient geological structures, and you’ll enjoy learning about these and viewing the prehistoric dioramas. Also, it’s a popular spot for birding, camping, hiking, and viewing the herds of bison that roam freely throughout the reserve.

You can stop for a round of miniature golf, and visit the gift shop as well!

Drink a Glass of Wine at Elk Creek Winery | Owenton, KY

Kentucky is known far and wide for its bourbon scene, but you might be surprised to find that there are plenty of excellent wineries there too! Elk Creek Winery is one of the best, located just across the Kentucky border in the town of Owenton.

You can get there from Cincinnati in roughly an hour, making it the perfect spot for a day trip. Elk Creek offers tours of the winery and tasting packages. The large menu features classic wines and unique fruit wines. There are also special events throughout the year, including live music!

Learn About Horses at the Kentucky Horse Park | Lexington, KY

Kentucky is famous for a few key things, and horse racing is one of them. The Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington is an entire park dedicated to the history of the relationship between humans and horses.

The property includes a 260-acre campground, museums, horseback riding trails, a parade route, and even a theme park. In other words, this is the one place you’ll ever need to visit to learn everything about horses and their care.

You can visit at any time of the year, but you might want to carve out time for a visit in the summer when there are horse shows galore!

Enjoy the Bourbon Scene at the Stitzel-Weller Distillery | Shively, KY

1-hour, 45-minute drive from Cincinnati

If there’s anything else you should know about Kentucky, it’s that its bourbon scene is unparalleled. You can find some of the best distilleries in the country around Louisville, and they serve signature products, of course.

There are dozens of places to find good Kentucky whiskey, but the Stitzel-Weller Distillery might be the best. The distillery has been in operation since Derby Day in 1935, following the end of Prohibition.

It closed its doors from 1992 to 2014 but is now open again, serving a legendary Louisville experience. Whiskey connoisseurs and newcomers alike will enjoy a visit!

Explore Ancient Rock Formations in the Red River Gorge | Stanton, KY

The Red River Gorge Geological Area is a stunning nature reserve featuring ancient rock formations that have been around for roughly 2.85 million years.

The gorge is located within the Daniel Boone National Forest and features many breathtaking geological characteristics, including dozens of natural sandstone cliffs and tunnels. It’s home to more than 60 miles of hiking trails, both easy and challenging.

Indiana Day Trips From Cincinnati Ohio

The Brookville Reservoir is a small section of the Whitewater River Valley located in Brookville Indiana. This stunning swimming area is flanked by two state nature reserves, making it the perfect place to enjoy outdoor sports of all kinds, from swimming to hiking, boating, angling, and more.

The fishing opportunities are renowned at Brookville Reservoir, and you’ll find walleye and many other species. The reservoir is also internationally renowned for its ancient fossils, which are as old as 450 million years!

Meet Sharks and More at the Indianapolis Zoo | Indianapolis, IN

Glen Helen Nature Preserve is home to the town’s namesake, the Yellow Spring. Hit the trails to explore the area’s natural beauty and see a waterfall (or two!).

Hike, bike, canoe, fish, and camp at John Bryan State Park . You won’t want to miss the limestone gorge and scenic river views!

Grab some homemade ice cream and see a real working farm at Young’s Jersey Dairy . Over the years, they’ve also added batting cages, mini golf, and the Kiddie Corral for more family fun.

Take a bike ride or walk along th e Little Miami Scenic Trail . This 78-mile shaded trail runs nearby downtown Yellow Springs and John Bryan State Park.

• Hocking Hills, Ohio

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 135 miles, approx. 2.25 hour drive

Hocking Hills is an Ohio State Park. Located in southeast Ohio, this area is popular in all four seasons. From hiking to camping to overnight cabin stays, put this one on your must-do list!

Rappel and rock climb with High Rock Adventures . They also offer guided Ecotours where you can take a nature hike and learn all about the area’s history, plants, and animals.

Enjoy locally crafted wine at family-owned Hocking Hills Winery .

• Frankfort, Kentucky

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 80 miles, approx. 1.5 hour drive

Here’s a day trip that took me by surprise! The town of Frankfort is so charming! Take a tour of the Kentucky State Capitol Building (in the image above). Be sure to take advantage of the self guided tour using the building’s Walking Tour brochure, and be sure not to miss the rotunda murals. There’s a nod to Cincinnati included there!

Right outside of Frankfort, you’ll find some popular spots along the Bourbon Trail: Buffalo Trace (love that place!), Four Roses Bourbon, Woodford Reserve, and Wild Turkey.

Daniel Boone is said to be buried at the nearby Frankfort Cemetery, along with his wife Rebecca. His final resting place provides a lovely view of the area.

Don’t miss the downtown area (so charming). If you’d like to stay over for the night, I can recommend the bed and breakfast in Frankfort – The Meeting House . Our room was wonderful, the hosts were super friendly, and the food was amazing!

• Lexington, Kentucky

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 83 miles, approx. 1.5 hour drive

Just a few hours south of Cincinnati and right off I-75, Lexington is the heart of Kentucky’s Bluegrass region. The city is best known for its beautiful rolling hills, fertile soil, and, of course, its horse farms.

Lexington is known as the Horse Capital of the World, so a visit almost wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Keeneland . See a live race, take a tour of the property, or grab dinner at the Keeneland Track Kitchen – or try them all!

Maybe a Zipline Canopy Tour through the Boone Creek Gorge is more your style? See the gorge from a new perspective via six zip lines, three sky bridges, a rappel, a spiral, and a floating staircase. The tour is perfect for 2-10 people and lasts 2.5 hours.

Visit Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co. for an authentic taste of the Bourbon Trail. Or, take a guided tour with Bourbon in the Bluegrass to tour and visit three nearby distilleries: Woodford Reserve Distillery, Historic Buffalo Trace Distillery, and Four Roses Distillery.

Grab a beer at one of our favorite Kentucky breweries: West Sixth Brewing . Enjoy a brew straight from the source and check out the building’s 100 year history, which was originally home to the Rainbo Bread Factory. The brewery has a huge taproom, a section full of picnic tables, and a few tables along the street.

• Columbus, Ohio

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 107 miles, approx. 1.5 hour drive

Spend hours exploring the gardens at Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens . Beautiful views are at every turn, between 400+ plant species, the Chihuly Collection of glass artwork, and the Light Raiment II light art installation at the Palm House.

With 300+ stores and over 30 million visitors each year, the Easton Town Center is one of the midwest’s premier shopping destinations. Beyond shopping, the campus is also home to Ohio’s largest movie theater, parks, town squares, dining destinations, and a comedy club.

Visit the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium , home to 130+ animals from around the world! Exhibits include Asia Quest, Expedition Congo, Heart of Africa, North America, Shores, and Voyage to Australia and the Islands.

Every Saturday from June to October (excluding July 4), Ohio farmers sell their freshly-picked produce at the North Market Farmer’s Market . Grab a bite to eat, shop local vendors, or pick up some produce to go at the area’s oldest and largest market of its kind.

Visit COSI , the “hands-on science museum and planetarium”. Exhibits are set up to make kids (and adults!) feel like they are actually experiencing the things they are learning about: see giant dinosaur skeletons, take a ride in a space capsule, drive an underwater ROV, and more!

• Dayton, Ohio

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 55 miles, approx. 1 hour drive

Located less than an hour away, Dayton is definitely day trip worthy. Enjoy some great food at the Oregon District, visit a musuem, take a hike… and don’t overlook nearby Yellow Springs too (see info about that above).

Here’s a trip that everyone needs to make at least once – Rabbit Hash!

Rabbit Hash is pretty tiny, but the Rabbit Hash General Stor e is definitely worth the drive! Started in 1831, this hidden gem draws visitors from far and wide and has survived three major floods. Shop its famous antiques, Bybee pottery, handmade goods from Berea College, and more.

• Hoosier National Forest, Indiana

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 144 miles, approx. 2.25 hour drive

Spanning across 9 counties in southern Indiana, this 200,000+ acre forest is the perfect outdoor escape from the city and suburbs. There’s TONS to do there, but here are a few ideas to get you started:

• Immerse yourself in nature in the forest’s trail systems and wilderness areas
• Learn about the area’s human history by visiting the Lick Creek African American Settlement (1815-1900), the Rickenbaugh House , and Mano Point (which was once a prehistoric village)
• Spend the day navigating the Orienteering area
• Fish at Sundance Lake
• Go waterfalling at Hemlock Cliffs

Located just three miles east of Yellow Springs, Clifton Gorge features 268 acres of spectacular dolomite and limestone gorges. The rushing waters of the Little Miami River flow through narrow channels and cliff overhangs.

Other great hikes in the Yellow Spring area include Glen Helen Nature Preserve and John Byran State Park.

Go Looking For Forest Giants 

Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest celebrated their 90th birthday by having Danish artist Thomas Dambo constructs three giant structures throughout the  Arboretum . Guests will enjoy meeting these three friendly forest giants as they explore nature trails in the area. 

Discover Mounds State Park

Located in Madison County, Indiana, Mounds State Park is known for its prehistoric Indian earthworks. The park is home to ten unique mounds. It is believed that the Adena-Hopewell people constructed these back in 160 B.C. with the largest being the Great Mound. Beautiful hiking trails make their way through the shady forest to all the earthworks.

A Nature Center, picnic areas, and camping are available on-site.

One of our favorite road trips from Cincinnati is to Big Bone Lick State Park in Union, Kentucky gives visitors the unique opportunity to view bison completely free! Remains of ancient mammoths, Pleistocene megafauna, have been found in the area making Big Bone Lick a state historical site.  Go for a hike, venture on the discovery trail, play a round of mini-golf, and more!

1. Celebrate the eclipse

With the solar eclipse's path of totality being so close to town, Cincinnatians are not waiting until Monday to celebrate. 2. Out of this world

Celebrate all things space at Woodland Mound. Kids and adults of all ages can walk through solar system, launch water-powered rockets, explore constellations and more. There will be sensory-friendly activities from 4-6 p.m. on Saturday.

3. Andrea Bocelli

Opera star Andrea Bocelli takes the stage this Sunday at Heritage Bank Center where he will perform as a stop on his international 2024 tour. Bocelli is an Italian tenor, famous for emotive songs such as "The Prayer" and "Vivo Per Lei." Tickets are currently on sale, starting at around $85.

4. Mercurial Landscapes

Cincinnati Ballet brings four dynamic contemporary works to the stage with Max Richter’s ethereal re-composition of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. You can watch a performance of the ballet from Friday through Sunday at the Aronoff Center for the Arts. Tickets start at $39.

5. Jayson Musson: His History of Art

Jayson Musson's exhibit opens this Friday at the Contemporary Arts Center and will be on display through early September. The exhibition centers around a new three-channel video series where Musson endeavors to educate his skeptical puppet sidekick Ollie on the relevance of art.

6. Attend a craft show

7. Greater Cincinnati Bridal & Wedding Expo

Are you a 2024 bride or groom? Check out the Greater Cincinnati Bridal & Wedding Expo this Sunday at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center. Here, you can expect a display of everything wedding-related from the perfect gown to venues, invitations, photographers, music, menu, honeymoon destination and more. There will also be a bridal fashion show and giveaways.

9. Relay for life

Support the American Cancer Society by attending Relay for Life at the University of Cincinnati. 10. Attend a Reds game

Now that the 2024 season is underway, you can head over to Great American Ball Park to watch the Cincinnati Reds. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday the Reds will take on the New York Mets in three home games. On Friday, fans can expect a post-game firework display. On Saturday and Sunday, fans heading to the ballpark can take home a Jake Fraley and Matt McLain bobblehead.
