Nope, I've always used zip-ties and always worked great! lol And you don't need to take the entire fork off to slide that over it (much more of a PITA on bikes with inverter forks...hence the zip-ties!). Tubes are 41mm.

For sure but I was going to be taking them off regardless that why I figured I'd slide these on. So the chrome is 41 and the black part is 43? I'm putting them on an FZ1 that I'm changing the fork oil and seals on as well.

Nice. Thanks for your help! Theoretically speaking- wouldn't I be able to run only 1 of those rings?

Yes, you only need one. Most people only do one side.

Thanks guys B)

I have one on mine but only because I got carts and did it at the same time lol.

Thats what I'm doing for mine too thats why I figured it would be cool

Oh, just the base kit?

Nice I always use zip ties, most of the time. The one time I rebuilt a set of 09 GSX-R forks I put on my SV I actually bought a red o-ring online in the correct size and slipped it on one of the fork tubes while I had it tore down during reassembly.

I use a zip tie on all my bikes too see where my fork travel is at. I can tell my GSXR 750 needs need fork oil since it is getting very low. I do like those sexy chrome ones, might be tempted since the 7fiddy will be getting fresh fork oil during the off season.😎😎😎

Does anyone know where to get these, what the part number is or if Ohlins even sells them on their own? The o-rings I've been using seem to dry rot and fall apart is short order and zip ties collect too much shit and debris under them and I'm worried it's going to scratch the surface.

I'm curious Robert, is the green O-ring too taught for your taste?
Robert Taylor said: ↑ 1565 series. Let me know the fork tube diameter and Ill let you know what the suffix is. For tensioning we ditch the o-rings and use the ''curtain rails'' out of old discarded fork seals. You can find the join, unwind and cut the female end to shorten and attain enough tension. Usually the ends need to be about a 1/2 inch apart when wrapped around the fork and prior to rejoining. Click to expand...
The fork tube od on GSXR1000 is 43mm, Ohlins ride height indicator part number 1565-04 is a perfect fit. Expensive but it does the job properly. With respect to the tensioning o rings. An earlier Ohlins part number gave you an o ring that was black and in pretty regular NBR70 spec, not so uv resistant so it would perish reasonably quickly. The later part number 338-54 is green in colour and in a more durable FKM70 spec. But we favour the seal ''curtain rails, especially if they are plated. And they are a lot more duranle than either o ring, also if you are in a trade that changes fork seals all the time they are free!
Bumping this up as I stumbled across a comparable unit that K-tech makes, alot easier to get a hold of and cheaper too. Everytime I use an o-ring from the hardware store they seem to fall apart in short order. Will see how resilient these guys are by comparison. http://www.orientexpress.com/p-1515...ersallow-frictionrequires-fork-disassemb.aspx

Just a thought before final assembly, assemble the fork w/o the spring and compress so you know where the mechanical stop is.

Also remember that these can be inaccurate if bump spikes or wheelie landings compress the fork beyond normal braking forces. They are ballpark indicators.

put 3 of the very small zip ties together, as using a 1 large one may be too wide if your mechanical stop will allow the dust seal to go to the bottom (actual seal is behind that dust seal). a large zip tie can damage them.. i wouldn't worry about scratching the tube, it's not like the zip tie is going up and down the entire ride.. it goes down and stops, then won't move any more till it's pushed further than the last time.

The New Cane Creek Invert Gravel Suspension Fork has Landed

fork travel markers

Previous Dispatch From Fri Apr 12, 2024

Friday Debrief: JPaks DropperStopper, the Perfect Framebag, Paul Crank Adapter, and More

Author Photo

Just launched, the new Cane Creek Invert is an inverted short-travel gravel suspension fork, and it’s the lightest one yet. Find details on the 30mm travel Cane Creek Invert SL and 40mm Cane Creek Invert CS here…

Short-travel gravel suspension forks designed for gravel bikes are nothing new. In fact, as of today, there are now five 30-45mm travel suspension forks on the market that are all based on the promise of soaking up gravel road chatter, pushing your rigid gravel bike further, and doing so without adding much weight. Today, Cane Creek announced what they are calling “the world’s first gravel fork,” which is definitely a long shot. I think a more appropriate claim would be the world’s lightest gravel suspension fork because, in reality, that’s true. Read on for details.

Cane Creek Invert Gravel Fork

Gravel Suspension Forks Compared

  • Cane Creek Invert (40mm): 1113 grams
  • RockShox Rudy (40mm): 1266 grams
  • MRP Baxter (40mm): 1420 grams
  • FOX AX (40mm): 1214 grams
  • Suntour GVX 700C (45mm): 1710 grams

According to the designers, the Cane Creek Invert is based on four key pillars: A smooth and controlled ride that boosts confidence, a lightweight design that does not work against riders, a visual design that integrates seamlessly into the drop bar bike’s silhouette, and a simple setup and operation that is not unnecessarily complex. Cane Creek chose an inverted suspension design as it allowed for the lightest overall weight and the most “visually integrated” compared to the forks currently available. It also reduces the unsprung weight of the entire system, a common benefit of inverted forks, which creates a more sensitive fork that they claim is better at actively smoothing surface variation.

Cane Creek Invert Gravel Fork

The Cane Creek Invert comes in two models. Cane Creek Invert CS has 40mm of fork travel and a Climb Switch that, when clicked, dramatically reduces the amount of fork movement needed to pedal out of the saddle. It weighs just 1,113 grams (2.5 pounds), with a 435mm axle-to-crown and a 45mm offset. The Invert SL has 30mm of travel, no Climb Switch, and weighs just 990 grams (2.2 pounds) with a 425mm axle-to-crown.

Both models are built around a carbon fiber crown and steerer bonded to aluminum uppers. The one-piece lowers are forged with machined 30mm stanchions with integrated hidden brake caliper bolts and a 12 x 100mm thru axle. The fork uses flat-mount brakes, has clearance for 700 x 50mm (29 x 2.0″) tires, and a 1 1/8″ tapered steerer tube. The Cane Creek Invert uses an adjustable air spring that has a set-and-forget design and requires no other adjustments. While we would have loved to see integrated bottle mounts, like on the MRP Baxter, and more tire clearance, its lightweight design is impressive and seems to be the real selling point.

The Cane Creek Invert CS and SL cost $1,199 and $1,099, respectively, and are available through retailers, distributors, and factory direct at CaneCreek.com .

KYB suspension settings

By Kris_r , April 17, 2023 in Beta Motorcycles

Recommended Posts

I picked up a 2022 250 RR Race Edition last fall. I finally got around to installing new Race Tech springs for my weight, I'm 225 lbs.

The pre-load is perfect now with the upped spring rate, but it's riding a bit rough in the rocky sections. I currently have the compression and rebound set to factory settings, and I'm going to try using the below suspension settings I found on betamotorcycle.com.

Quote   Fork: Compression – 16 clicks out from fully closed; Rebound – 14 clicks out from fully closed; Tube height – 1st line or flush depending on the terrain. (Flush for more high speed terrain) Shock: Low speed compression – 15 clicks out from fully closed; High Speed Compression – 12 clicks out from fully closed; Rebound – 15 clicks out from fully closed Sag: Static – 25-45mm; Rider – 100-115mm

Does anyone have any suspension setting recommendations for KYB? Maybe a setting for rougher enduro riding, and setting for faster/smoother track riding?

After riding the sections you get the rough feeling, did you check how much travel you use?

@Doc Brown  I didn't do any travel checks yet on the forks but plan to once I get a baseline setting for the suspension and do some testing. Hoping to do that this weekend.

Yes, a simple zip tie will do the job and gives you a rough idea what is going on. Let us know what you found pls.

Have a greta day!

The green vitron o-rings from the 2T expansion chambers work really well as fork travel markers. You will need to take the forks off to feed them down from the top.

Update here.

I set the fork and shock with the settings from Beta's site, and have gotten a handful of rides in. To be honest I'm not sure I need to make any changes! It seems to be using all of the stroke on the fork (I didn't add anything like a band or zip tie, but I can see from dust lines it's traveling to about 1.5" above the axle dropout).

Overall it rides nice, though I haven't ridden any really rocky sections and still need to see how I feel in that type of terrain. (Total sidebar: one of the things I miss with my 2016 350 XC-F is the WP suspension with the comp adjuster on one fork and rebound on the other, you could adjust it on the fly when riding if you got into super rocky terrain).

I'm trying to get the bike out to a track to see how it does in that setting, it'll probably need bumped up compression and rebound for that. Currently it feels pretty in the middle as far as stiffness of compression.

RockShox SID SL Ultimate fork review

The lighter of the two sids aren’t as butch as its big brother but if that’s what you’re after it’s brilliant.

RockShox SID SL Ultimate

BikePerfect Verdict

SID SL is genuinely superlight, , surprisingly plush yet predictably controlled and top value but options are limited

Super light

Impressive damping

Sensitive once moving

Well priced

Good tire clearance

Simple lockout

Torque Cap works great with the right wheel

Multiple lockout options

Linear without spacers

Tight off the top

Only one size/shape option

Torque Cap is infuriating without the right wheel

Why trust BikePerfect Our cycling experts have decades of testing experience. We'll always share our unbiased opinions on bikes and gear. Find out more about how we test.

According to RockShox the SID SL is the ideal fork “when you absolutely, positively need to go as fast as possible” and the podium-tuned performance and super-low weight means we’d probably agree. It’s an easy fork to set up and live with and cracking value, too,  but it takes a while to smooth out.

  • Best mountain bike forks : the best MTB forks for XC, trail, enduro and downhill
  • Best XC forks : the best cross country forks for a lightweight, plush ride

Construction

We’re massive fans of the 35mm legged SID Ultimate 120mm travel ‘downcountry’ fork but while the SL shares a lot of features it’s a very different fork.

For a start, the legs are ‘only’ 32mm and it only comes in a 100mm travel, 29er wheel, 44mm offset format. Those are the stats most XC racers will be after, but it definitely means some riders will be looking to Fox as it offers 51mm offset and 27.5 wheel options on its 32 SC forks. While the lower leg cutaways aren’t as obvious as they are on Fox's SC, the SID SL now has flattened inner sections and a narrower overall stance, too. The dropouts use RockShox’s proprietary Torque Cap oversized inner face to increase stiffness. There’s no bespoke fender like the SID Ultimate and space is tight if you’re using a 2.35in tire so there’s not much room for a clip-on unless you’re using narrow mud rubber. You can fit up to a 200mm brake rotor, too, or direct mount with a 160mm disc though and the hose holding clip is a really neat piece of design. Having reasonably accurate pressures printed on the back of the leg and easy to see sag markers on the stanchion makes ballpark set up straight forward, too.

The Charger Race Day damper has been shrunk right down in volume (losing 100g in the process) and the lockout lever on the right leg top is a tiny metal flag. Alternatively, you can opt for a TwistLoc or PushLoc remote trigger for handlebar actuation. The rebound adjuster is a removable 2.5mm Allen key that plugs into the adjuster halfway up inside the hollow lower legs. That gives an uncut weight of 1,340g (with no volume spacers) which is 100g lighter than an equivalent 32 SC, 140g lighter than the DT Swiss F232 ONE 29 and nearly 200g lighter than the previous SID - an exciting number for racers and gram watchers.

  • RockShox forks overview : models, details, pricing and specification

Performance

The first thing you need to know about the SID is that it takes a few rides to really release its full potential. In fact, our initial review said: “the fork naturally sits tall and taut with a notchy breakaway off the top so you’ll need to use lower tire pressures to make it feel comfortable rather than efficiently stubborn.”

Turns out we should have waited before calling it though as we’ve now put several hundred km into a couple of sets and they’re both now running super plush. That’s because once they’ve had enough use to get rid of stiction the Maxima Plush  damping fluid and SKF seals give it excellent sensitivity so traction judgment and trail feedback are very clear and precise. The Race Day version of the Charger is also impressively consistent considering its tiny size and you can carry on pushing hard on rocky descents without any worries about the SL getting dizzy. If you’re carving berms and pumping flow trails then the pre-set low-speed damping is enough to keep the fork stable in the mid-stroke, too. The DebonAir spring is naturally very linear though and the high-speed compression damping is more open than most race forks so the red travel marker pushes right up to the heavily machined crown without much provocation if you start clobbering stuff hard.

We’d rather have that than serious spiking issues though and it definitely aligns with the ‘for big hits only’ way most racers set up their suspension. You can add up to three ‘bottomless token’ volume spacers to increase ramp up, too, but each one you add makes a big difference. That meant we settled at one full token and a DIY chopped down 1/3rd volume token at 90psi rather than the recommended 100psi for our 70kg weight. Pressure and tokens are the only way you can control the compression of the fork as the lockout lever is exactly that - a completely solid lockout for rigid-forked sprinting (although it will blow open to protect fork internals and wrists if you forget to switch it off when you’ve finished climbing).

Despite the class-leading weight, cutaway lower legs and slim-arch tracking and braking stiffness are decent and, while it can deflect if you’re pushing hard through off-camber or rooty/rocky sections, it’s never terrifyingly twangy. That level of accuracy is entirely appropriate for a race fork anyway as it’s the super thin wall, Space Hopper bouncy 600g race tires it’s likely to be paired with, not the fork, that will set the technical trail limits of your front end. Combining the SID with a Torque Cap wheel/hub tightens tracking up considerably too so it’s well worth hunting out a wheel with that option if you’re building up a fresh bike.

RockShox SID SL Ultimate

RockShox has done an awesome job of leapfrogging to the front of the pack in terms of weight while improving suspension feel and keeping accuracy competitive for the category. Once you’ve put in enough ride time it’s extremely plush and sensitive too, boosting traction and reducing fatigue on rough terrain - although more aggressive riders will want to add spacers to the linear stroke. Once set up right classy looks, high-volume tire space, top-value pricing, and some really neat features and it’s our new benchmark XC race fork, especially when paired with a Torque Cap hub/wheel.

Substitute for O-Ring to track travel on stanchion?

fork travel markers

  • Add to quote

Is there a good substitute for a rubber O-ring to keep track of travel on a fork stanchion and rear shock? My rubber O-rings tend to tear after awhile (fork oil + heat) and I just don't want to disassemble the fork & rear shock in between services just to put on another. I've seen others use zip ties, and I'm considering the thinnest ones, but it doesn't go flush around the column. There's a tiiiiny space where the tie fastens, and I'd hate for a very small sharp pebble to get lodged in there risking scratching up the stanchions. Any suggestions?

fork travel markers

Rubber band. Like, any rubber band. Cut it, tie it around the stanchion, trim ends. You can even get them in colours to match your bike or fork. The cost for this mod is effectively $0. If you don't have a rubber band at home, go to a grocery store and steal one from some shallots or something. You don't even need scissors, 'cause you can just chew through it, or get a cat to chew through it [most cats love to chew on rubber bands like they're the tendons of some hapless rodent]. It will last through about two seasons of normal use before you have to find another rubber band and another cat / pair of scissors.

Haha, this might just do the trick! I'm sure one of my cats will be happy to help me with the installation.

Zip ties works fine. Don't worry about some tiny sharp pebble. How often do you slide the zip tie up and down anyways?

I was gonna go with a small zip tie. I tend to reset the o-ring several times during a ride, particularly after a big drop or some pretty gnarly sections, and even after a climb (to look for pedal bob). I used to be a set it and forget it kinda guy, but lately I'm putting more of an effort to understand my bike's suspension and trying to get the most out of it and overall become a smoother rider. As I was going through my zip ties, I found something that might just work. It's a velcro fastener that functions like a zip tie. The "soft" side will be in contact with the stanchion, "rough" side facing out. It wraps on itself, and the soft side is as soft as cotton. The rough part isn't too rough also. It won't stick to fabric, just the soft part of the tie. I think it's safe enough to use without risk of damaging wipers during a bad bottom out. I'll slap it on tonight and see how it works.

I wouldn't use zip ties, they may damage the seal if you bottom hard.

Dust was the first thing I thought of, but I don't have enough zen to sense it! Plus dust is hard to see on the gold/bronze colored stanchions of the RS Pike. I'd like an at-a glance indicator. It's bad enough with my near-sightedness lol!

Totally with pinkrobe. I use a thin rubber band tied round the stantion- works as good as a proper O ring and is free

Other honorable mentions are sewing thread and I've even used those rubber or paper covered wires to close bags.

i was just about to make a thread on the same subject. i may give the rubberband a try!

I used a zip tie then got paranoid so I switched a velcro strap used for tv wires. I trimmed the strap down to 1/8 of an inch and it works great in dry conditions. I take it off in the winter.

Introducing Invert, The World’s First Gravel Fork

fork travel markers

Asheville, NC-

Invert is the World’s First Gravel Fork. Early in the research and development process, Cane Creek identified four key ‘Pillars’ that would be integral to making the world’s first well-executed gravel fork:

  • A smooth and controlled ride that boosts confidence
  • Lightweight design that does not work against riders
  • Visual design that integrates seamlessly into the drop bar bike’s silhouette
  • Simple setup & operation that is not unnecessarily complex

Until this point, no fork made for drop bars, rigid or otherwise can offer this much rider benefit in one, clean package. This is what it means to truly be a Gravel Fork.

Riding beyond the pavement can be rough, physically taxing, and unpredictable. Invert goes straight to the source of this problem to offer a smoother ride with more traction, both uphill and down. With Invert, riders will be more efficient, more relaxed and have confidence to glide over gravel like they have never experienced before.

“Wider gear ranges, tubeless, INVERT: gamechangers! Most times progress is met with hesitation but often becomes the norm. Throughout the development of Invert, our team knew there was a better way, and was vested in making a true, legitimate option for Gravel. Invert is going to change the gravel landscape.”      – Kyle McNamee, Product Manager

Cane Creek will offer two models of Invert that will be available this summer – Invert SL and Invert CS. Invert SL and Invert CS differ in two simple ways – A Climb Switch and the amount of available travel.

Invert CS comes with 40mm of fork travel and a Climb Switch, that when clicked, dramatically reduces the amount of fork movement for pedaling out of the saddle. The Climb Switch button is inspired by the simple click of a pen and is as satisfying to click as the feature is to use.

Invert SL is a more minimal and lightweight variation, for those that want the least intrusive option, but still want the rider benefit of Invert. It forgoes the Climb Switch mechanism and comes with 30mm of travel. This shorter option may also be preferable to some riders that want to keep their stance on the front of the bike lower. Invert SL weighs less than 1 kilogram.

Why inverted? This layout proved to be the best path forward for Cane Creek to be able to adhere to the original ‘Four Pillars’ of the design concept. An inverted fork allowed for the lightest weight and most visually integrated design – two crucial aspects gravely missing from the market. It also has other beneficial side effects. The inverted design reduces the mass directly attached to the front wheel which makes it more sensitive and better at actively smoothing the surface below. This is known as reducing the unsprung weight of the system. Inverted forks also use gravity to help keep bushings and seals coated in suspension oil – playing another crucial role in reducing overall friction.

Lastly, the design leaves more clearance above the tire for riding in mucky conditions and places the wiper seals in an orientation where dirt, grit, and mud will not collect and sit as easily!

Using Invert is easy. Riders only need a basic shock pump to set the PSI in the air spring to 95% of their body weight. Cane Creek recommends this as a starting point , with further adjustment encouraged, based on rider preference. No other adjustments are necessary. Through blind testing with a variety of riders, Cane Creek decided that complex and wide-ranging damper adjustments simply aren’t needed when considering the minimal travel and primary use case of realistic gravel riding. Invert is everything a rider needs, and nothing they don’t.

Cane Creek’s all new Invert gravel fork will be available for purchase by early Summer 2024 through retailers, distributors, and factory direct at canecreek.com. Visit canecreek.com to sign up and receive email notification when they are available for purchase. Invert is available in the SL model for $1099.99 and the CS model for $1199.99.
