Pet Tours | Dog-Friendly Cruises and More
If we’re being well and truly honest, we would all take our pets along on every vacation if we could. Considering how many pet owners treat their animals with birthday presents, it’s not hard to imagine taking your pet along on an adventure.
Now more than ever, individuals are taking their beloved animal companions with them to pet-friendly hotels and cafes rather than leaving them at home.
While it sounds appealing to bring your pet along on your escapades, it’s important to take into account the stress levels of your favorite fur/feathered creature. While there are a few herbal options to help ease some anxiety in your pet when faced with adventuring in the outside world, the situation is going to differ depending on the type of pet you own. For more information on herbal remedies for stress in animals, check out CBD oil for pets South Africa .
This article is here to offer some tips and advice on touring with your pets, as well as mention a few ideal, pet-friendly tours.
Pet-Friendly Tours
You might want your pet in the lap of luxury alongside you at your vacation hotel or hanging out with you at a pet-friendly cafe. You may want to take them along on a hike or lounge on the shore at the beach together. The possibilities are endless. It all depends on the needs of you and your pet.
Top Dog Pet Travel
Top Dog Pet Travel is a pet-friendly travel agency that aims to help you plan the perfect vacation for you and your pet. Initially created by a loving pet owner, Top Dog Pet Travel strives to put together the best destinations and activities for you and your pet to partake in together.
Offering affordable rates and reliable services, this agency will have you vacationing with your pet to tourist hot spots like the Grand Canyon.
Take your pet with you to a luxurious houseboat or even share a spa day. Whether it’s kayaks, cruises, or just a good old beach day, Top Dog Pet Travel has an adventure for everyone and their beloved pets.
Pet-Friendly Cruise Lines
Pet-friendly cruise lines can be a little hard to come by. Most cruises do allow service animals on board with their owners. But finding a cruise line that will allow you to bring your pets, purely for the sake of having them tag along, may be a little difficult.
While some pet owners like to bend the rules in terms of specifying whether or not their pet is a necessary emotional support animal, there are other options that don’t involve loopholes.
For pet-friendly cruises from New York, the Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 is a viable option. This pet-friendly cruise ship moves between New York City and South Hampton. Provided you book a spot for your pet, this cruise will allow you to bring your pet along with you on board.
Take note, however, your pet will not be allowed to stay with you in your cabin but will, rather be housed in one of the kennels onboard the cruise. Pets will be allowed playtime and will be served food but will be confined to the kennels every night. It’s also important to note that the waiting list for such a booking can be incredibly long, so best book ahead of schedule! This cruise is also only accepting of dogs and cats. Any other winged, scaled, or smaller furry beings will not be permitted.
So long as you stick to the rules and consider the needs of your furry friend, a pet-friendly cruise is an awesome adventure to be had with your pet. While you may have to bid them goodbye every night, days on this cruise will be exciting and memorable for both you and your fur baby.
Walking Tours (USA)
Walking tours in new locations can be a momentous experience for the senses for both you and your pet. For those residing or vacationing in the US, there are plenty of walking tours geared towards indulging both you and your pets. With so many sights, scents, and sounds, USA walking tours are a fun way to hang out with your pet and take in the sights.
Walking tours are best for the kind of pets that can manage longer walks out in the open, such as dogs and possibly some adventurous cats. Although, there are a few bird species that could enjoy a ride on your shoulder as you walk.
You could take the iconic Asbury Park Photo Tour along the Asbury Park boardwalk. During this tour, your guide will snap some photos of you and your pet in front of the historic landmarks and street art. This pet tour can include up to five guests and afterward, you’d get to keep all the photos.
If you’re thinking of adding a little more excitement to the mix, you could participate in the NAWLINS SH’NANIGANS Scavenger Hunt in New Orleans. This pet tour will take you on an exhilarating scavenger hunt through New Orleans as you take in the sights and participate in a few fun activities along the way.
This event can accommodate up to thirty guests, so bring your friends and their own adventurous pets along for the ride.
There are a number of exciting US walking tours for you to experience with your pet. From pristine dog parks to informative, historical tours, there’s no reason your pet shouldn’t see it all with you.
Some Final Thoughts on Pet Tours
There are countless pet-friendly adventures and tours for you to experience. So long as you remain mindful and aware of your pet’s needs and stresses, you are bound to enjoy a vacation or small tour with your favorite animal companion.
So grab your leash and hold onto your hat as you set out on your new travel experience with your best furry friend!

Travelling Without a Passport
Pet-Friendly Travel Options: Your Complete Guide
We love travelling. Whether it’s taking off somewhere far, far away for a month or simply sneaking away for a long weekend, travel unlocks all kinds of adventures. And we don’t only travel for pleasure and we aren’t always travelling alone. Sometimes we’re boarding a plane or taking a long road trip because we’re moving or taking a gap year, and that means our furry friends are coming along with us.
But travel can be taxing, tiring, and generally stressful and that’s without a dog, cat, or iguana in tow! So let’s make it simple. We’ve scoured the web, asked our experienced friends, and even travelled with pets ourselves to put together this comprehensive guide to your pet-friendly travel options!

Booking accommodation with a pet
So whether your trip is for business or pleasure, it will most likely include a stay overnight in a hotel, motel or lodge. But are you allowed to bring your pet? And if you are, what are the exact circumstances or conditions you’ll need to abide by?
Luckily more and more places are starting to accommodate pets but depending on where you’re travelling the rules will all be different. Not everyone defines “pet-friendly” under the same conditions! So here’s a list of questions we suggest asking your accommodation providers before you book:
- What type of rooms are available to pet owners? The rooms that allow pets are typically on the main floor with easy access to the outdoors. If you were planning to book a fancier room, they may not be able to welcome your dog or cat.
- What types, sizes, and amounts of pets are allowed? Accommodations that allow dogs may not necessarily allow other pets, including cats. Others permit pets under a certain size and may restrict the number of pets per room.
- Are their special rules or restrictions that apply to pets? Your hotel might request that pets stay off the furniture and out of certain common areas like beaches or outdoor dining areas. Many will not permit pets to be left unattended in rooms, even for short periods of time.
- Are there any services available for pets? Plan to sightsee but would prefer to leave your friend at the hotel for a couple of hours? You can ask if your accommodation offers any pet-sitting services or knows of trustworthy local animal daycares. You can also ask if they have a list of nearby dog parks, or if they’re able to provide a water bowl and food.
How to fly with your pet
According to the Air Transport Association, over 500,000 animals are shipped via the air every year. While nearly all of these experiences go off without a hitch, there’s an undeniable truth that air travel can be tough on your pet. Which airline you choose can make a difference in how easy the journey is, so bookmark this story for later before reading on.
Read the article: The 20 Most Pet-Friendly International Airlines Ranked
Here are 8 steps for flying with your pet:
- Limit the use of sedatives. Contrary to what you might be tempted to do, the veterinarians we spoke to advised against the use of sedatives and tranquillizers. If your pet is kept in the plane’s hold, these types of medications can make it feel even colder to your furry friends and put them at risk of suffering dangerous drops in temperatures.
- Get a health certificate from your veterinarian (that includes vaccinations) . This health certificate needs to meet the specific requirements of your destination, as well as your airline. Usually, these certificates should only be obtained no more than 10 days before the flight to ensure the information is valid and up to date.
- Enquire about quarantines . If you’re taking an international flight, check in advance if your pet will need to be quarantined upon arrival. This can also change depending on their breed so be sure to thoroughly check in advance as quarantine times can be significant.
- Pick the right crate (and include food/water) . Use a portable kennel that meets your airline’s requirements and is well-reviewed by other travellers.
- Book a nonstop flight . Nonstop flights are simply easier and ensure fewer things can go wrong (think delays and unexpected rerouting).
- Feed your animal 4 hours before boarding Keep your pet happy, healthy and full by making sure they’re well-fed and hydrated fours before take-off to ensure they have time to go to the bathroom.
- Notify the airline you’ll be flying with your pet . When booking your flight, let your airline know you will be travelling with your pet and take note of the airline’s policies and requirements for travelling with your pet. Two weeks before your flight, check with your airline again to make sure you’ve done everything you need to.
- Put a detailed collar on your pet (and their crate) . Have your pet wear a collar that includes relevant identifying information with your address, and a friend’s address and phone number (in case of emergency), and a rabies tag if one is required.
While some people may question why you’re bringing your pet along with you on your relaxing holiday or gap year, many pet owners know that travelling with pets, when done right and responsibly, only strengthens the bond between the two of you – and makes your trip even better. Remember to understand your pet’s limits, though: if you notice that flying makes them especially anxious, or they have any medical issues that arise from or are worsened by travel, consider limiting how far you take them. Otherwise, get ready for the trip of a lifetime – both yours and your pet’s!

Pet-Friendly Trip to New Orleans: The Ultimate Guide
New Orleans is a city that is welcoming to everybody, including your four-legged friends. The city is full of pet-friendly parks and activities for your furry friends to enjoy, from dog-friendly restaurants to open-air markets. There’s even a dog parade, The Krewe of Barkus , during Mardi Gras ! You’ll find water bowls at most outdoor eateries, dog parks scattered throughout the city, and streets that are perfect for roaming with your best friend.
And with many of our vacation rentals being pet-friendly , you’ll have everything you need for the ‘pawfect’ getaway. We’ve put together our ultimate guide to your pet-friendly New Orleans trip below!
Pet-Friendly Parks in NOLA
- Address: 1 Palm Dr., New Orleans, LA
- Neighborhood: Mid-City
Boasting over 1,300 acres, City Park is the largest park in New Orleans. The park welcomes millions of visitors each year to its countless attractions.
City Park is home to 24 miles of walking trails, making it the perfect spot to give your furry friends some exercise while you explore. Along your stroll, you’ll find 100-year-old live oaks, sculpture gardens, historic landmarks, and even a central lake.
Pets are required to stay on leash throughout the park. However, City Park does have a designated dog park, Nola City Bark, where dogs can run free and enjoy the company of fellow dog travelers.
Audubon Park
- Address: 6500 Magazine Street, New Orleans, LA
- Neighborhood: Uptown
With plenty of outdoor space to roam, Audubon Park makes for the perfect pet-friendly spot. While smaller than City Park, this park is beloved by locals and visitors alike for its tranquil atmosphere, ancient oak trees, and large walking path that surrounds the park. It is a popular destination to run, golf, play tennis, and hear live music from local musicians.
Audubon Park is home to Audubon Zoo, a family-friendly destination that welcomes pets along for the journey. Dogs are welcome to enjoy the zoo on a leash but are not allowed inside animal exhibits.
Crescent Park
- Address: Crescent Park Trail, 2300 N Peters St, New Orleans, LA
- Neighborhood: Bywater
On the other side of the Big Easy lies Crescent Park, a riverfront park in the Bywater neighborhood. Crescent Park is long and narrow, making up 20 acres of urban landscape along the Mississippi River. The park provides unparalleled views of the river while strolling its 1.4-mile walking trail with your pet. The trail even connects all the way to the French Market in the French Quarter, a dog-friendly outdoor market.
Crescent Park is also home to a dog park, Crescent Bark. While dogs are required to stay on a leash in the main park, Crescent Bark is a gated area where dogs can roam free and enjoy the nice river breeze.
Lafreniere Park
- Address: 3000 Downs Blvd, Metairie, LA
- Neighborhood: Metairie
Just outside of New Orleans lies Lafreniere Park, the largest park in the suburb of Metairie . Lafreniere Park is a 155-acre park that is home to a 2-mile walking trail, multi-use sports fields, disc golf, and even a large lake in the center of the park.
Within Lafreniere Park is a 5-acre dog park with a large space to play, roam, and relax off-leash. There is a paved walking path within the dog park as well.
Pet-Friendly Activities
Go on a walking tour.
New Orleans is known for its infamous walking tours that highlight this unique city’s many historical and cultural aspects. Whether you choose to discover ghosts, explore murals, or get a taste of local breweries , Nola walking tours offer it all.
Many of the walking tours take place in the French Quarter, a pet-friendly neighborhood in the heart of New Orleans. You’ll enjoy roaming the French Quarter streets while learning about important aspects of New Orleans alongside your furry friend. They might not be able to appreciate the history, but they will love the views along the way!
Visit Frenchmen Art Market
- Address: 619 Frenchmen St, New Orleans, LA
- Neighborhood: The Marigny
The Frenchmen Art Market is your spot if you’re looking for a nighttime activity to enjoy with your furry friend.
This open-air market is a testament to the city’s diverse artistic talent. Located in the heart of Frenchmen Street, the market showcases local artists’ work, ranging from paintings to sculptures to jewelry. Enjoy live music while you stroll from tent to tent and browse the many treasures to be found here.
The Frenchmen Art Market opens nightly at 8 p.m. Pets are allowed on leashes.
Take a Swamp Tour
If you and your pooch want an authentic Cajun experience, there’s nothing more fitting than a New Orleans swamp tour.
Swamp tours range in location, price, and experience based on the company you choose, but one thing is for certain: you’ll get an immersive view of Louisiana’s wetlands. Swamp tours involve a boat ride along the murky waters that are home to alligators, turtles, and plenty of other species. Your swamp tour guide will help you spot all of the natural wildlife surrounding you and give you some fun swamp facts along the way.
While not all of them are pet-friendly, Bring Fido provides a list of tours that welcome your furry friend along.
Ride The Canal Streetcar Line
There’s no better way to take in the views of the city than from the Canal Streetcar . This historic public transportation method allows dogs to join if they are carried in small containers, so your small furry friends are invited!
This streetcar line takes you from Canal Street through the Central Business District to City Park , the perfect place to land for a play date with your pooch. You’ll spot historic landmarks all along the route, so be sure to soak in the views along the way.
You can purchase a Jazzy Pass for $3/day or pay $1.25/ride.
Pet-Friendly Restaurants
Cafe du monde.
- Address: 800 Decatur St, New Orleans, LA
- Neighborhood: French Quarter
- Website: shop.cafedumonde.com
- Price Point: $
Located in the heart of the French Quarter, Cafe du Monde is known for offering the best beignets in the city. But did you know it is also the ideal spot to dine with your pet?
With a large outdoor seating area, Cafe du Monde invites pets to join their humans for a delicious meal of beignets and chicory while people-watching in Jackson Square. While pets aren’t allowed indoors, you and your furry friend can enjoy plenty of space in the outdoor seating area.
- Address: 3336 Magazine St, New Orleans, LA
- Neighborhood: Garden District
- Website: datdog.com
It’s hard not to include this restaurant when it has the word “dog” in its very name! Dat Dog is a Nola staple serving up delicious hot dogs year-round. The menu features their own take on the classic hot dog, with items ranging from beer-battered cod fish to crawfish hot dogs. They also have vegan and vegetarian options.
While Dat Dog has multiple locations, we’re big fans of the outdoor space on Magazine Street, which is perfect for your four-legged friends. This is your spot if you’re looking for a laid-back, casual, pet-friendly food joint.
Cafe Amelie
- Address: 900 Royal Street, New Orleans, LA
- Website: cafeamelie.com
- Price Point: $$
Cafe Amelie is a quaint cafe in the middle of the French Quarter known for its decadent brunch menu. The cafe serves Creole staples such as Gulf shrimp and grits, gumbo, and salmon cakes.
Apart from the delicious food, Cafe Amelie boasts one of the most beautiful courtyards in New Orleans. Known as the Princess of Monaco Courtyard, this lush patio is the perfect backdrop to your pet’s (erm, your) vacation.
While pets are not allowed inside the restaurant, they are welcome to join you for your courtyard brunch. Reservations are recommended.
- Address: 701 St Charles Ave, New Orleans, LA
- Neighborhood: Warehouse District
- Website: herbsaint.com
- Price Point: $$$
If your pet prefers a fine dining experience, you’ll definitely want to take them to Herbsaint. Consistently rated one of the best restaurants in the city, Herbsaint is known for its French-Southern cuisine and extensive wine list.
Right in front of the restaurant, Herbsaint offers outdoor seating reminiscent of a Parisian bistro. Pets are welcome to join you in the outdoor space. We recommend making reservations ahead and letting them know you will require outdoor seating; walk-ins are welcome at the patio, but there is often a wait for these spots.
Have the Pawfect New Orleans Trip
We love a city that celebrates its pets, and New Orleans does just that! From inviting your pet on a streetcar ride to eating Creole food in a local courtyard, your four-legged friends won’t have to miss any of the fun.
With our pet-friendly vacation rentals scattered throughout New Orleans, it’s easy for you and your furry friend to have the best trip to New Orleans. We hope our guide helps you both enjoy the Big Easy!

30 best places to take your pet on vacation
Posted: November 30, 2023 | Last updated: November 30, 2023
Travel round the world with your pet with these top spots to explore with your cat or dog
When looking for somewhere to vacation with your pet, you may feel spoiled for choice. Whether you want to travel domestically or internationally, many places love dogs, cats and pets of all kinds just as much as we do and provide pet-friendly accommodation.
One thing to consider when it comes to how to travel with a dog or traveling with a cat are quarantine periods: if you want to visit another country for two weeks and the quarantine period for animals entering the country is that long in itself, it might be worth leaving your furry friend behind.
However, if you’re looking to take an extended stay in another country, there are plenty of options available that will allow you to cross their borders with your pet after a period of isolation. Here are some of the best...
New York, New York
If you like urban areas, you can’t go wrong with New York city. If you’ve been dying to explore the big apple, there are lots of pet friendly accommodation and pet boarding services if you don’t want to take them everywhere with you. Visit Central Park and tick something off your own bucket list, and your pet’s!
Bangkok, Thailand
Animals roam Bangkok freely, looked after by their local communities. You can take your pet to Petropolis Park, or visit the Petropolitan Hotel for spa treatments, the pet shop or simply to sit down with your pet for a little while. You can explore the temples and see the sights with or without your pet, with daycares around the city.
Chicago, Illinois
Take your dog with you on a canine cruise, or if you’re a cat lover visit The Catcade, an arcade that is home to many cats who are perfectly happy watching people win and lose at arcade games. You can also visit “the bean” - sorry Cloud Gate - by Anish Kapoor, but you’ll have to leave your pet behind for this one, as Millennium Park does not allow pet visitors.
Victoria, Australia
We have to include an Australian location, as pets are just as popular down under as they are here. Take a dog friendly winery tour, ride a talking tram or take your pet on a paddle steamer (no really). If your pet is well behaved, you might also be able to take them with you to meet some Koalas on Raymond Island.
St Petersburg, Russia
As well as pet-friendly accommodation, St Petersburg has plenty of walkable areas and parks to explore with your pet. In particular, lovers of dogs (and science) might want to visit the monument to Pavlov’s dog in the northwestern district. The statue commemorates a mutt named Bierka, who helped Pavlov with his research into conditioning. You can also visit Polyustrovskiy Market to pick up supplies for your pet and check out the tropical fish.
Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo, although a tightly-packed urban environment, is remarkably pet friendly. Due to the small sized apartments, many people own cats, birds, fish and toy dogs, but you do still see larger pets around sometimes too. Yoyogi Park is one of many dog friendly parks to visit with your pet and endless pet cafes where your companion will be treated as an honored guest.
Madrid, Spain
Madrid is well set up with pet friendly accommodation and lots of the restaurants and attractions are happy to accept non-human visitors too. Since 2016 you can take dogs on the metro, which makes it even easier to travel around the city with a pooch (or indeed a cat).
Dana Point, California
There can be no doubt that Californians love their pets, with almost 60% of California households owning pets. If you like shopping, there is an open air mall that you and your pet can explore and hopefully bring home some bargains.
Santorini, Greece
You may not think of Greece when we say “pet-friendly” but the island of Santorini has plenty of pet friendly accommodation. It is worth considering that there are feral dogs and cats on the island (taken care of by the Santorini Animal Welfare Association), so keep in mind your pet might interact with them before booking your ticket. The stunning natural landscape and beautiful white houses will give you and your pet plenty to look at while you explore.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
We couldn’t make a list of pet friendly destinations without mentioning Philadelphia. You and your pet can enjoy a Philly cheesesteak and traverse the Wissahickon Valley Park, although your dog will need to stay on leash here.
The Peak District, England
If you’ve tackled all your local peaks, it might be time to take your pet to the north of England and tackle some of the mountains there. You can even visit the grounds of Chatsworth House with your pet in tow and live out your Pride and Prejudice dreams as it was used as the location for Pemberly in the 2005 film. We’ve personally visited Chatsworth with dogs and they loved the sweeping estate land surrounding the house, and splashed in the stream chasing sticks and balls while we admired the architecture.
Riga, Latvia
The capital of Latvia offers several places to stay with your pet beside the Baltic Sea. Soak up some history as you walk around the city, check out the art nouveau architecture or visit the Old Town - your furry friend can accompany you for all of it.
Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada
If you and your pet are fans of hiking, Lake Tahoe is a great place to spend your vacation. It combines fantastic beaches with beautiful mountain hikes, giving you the best of both worlds.
Oudtshoorn, South Africa
There is an Africamps location in Oudtshoorn that is happy to accept visitors with their dogs. Indeed, they have a resident dog called Rufus, who can show your pet around. If your pet isn’t a fan of ostriches, this might not be the best place, as the camp site is on a working ostrich farm, but there are two other locations across South Africa that are also happy to accept animals.
Auckland, New Zealand
Auckland in New Zealand is a great place to visit with your pet, with plenty of pet friendly beaches, accommodation and plenty to do. Mellons Bay, Takapuna beach, and Piha beach are the most popular dog beaches, but if your pet is less sociable, you can find quieter places to go too.
Bruges, Belgium
You might remember the window-dwelling Labrador retriever, Fidèle, known for snoozing above the canal between 2003 and 2016, even making an appearance in the film In Bruges. While he has sadly died, you can visit the spot he used to sunbathe with your own four-legged friend, as Bruges is a very pet friendly city.
Lisbon, Portugal
If you want to visit Europe for the architecture, but want to get some sun in too, then Lisbon might be the city for you and your pet. The people of Lisbon love dogs, so you can guarantee your furry friend will get lots of pets as you explore the pastel-colored buildings and historic castle.
Wallonia, Belgium
You can enjoy some traditional Belgian waffles with your best pal, thank heavens, with over 1000 pet friendly hotels, B&Bs and apartments available in Wallonia. Enjoy the medieval and renaissance architecture and take in mountain views in Namur, the gateway to the Ardennes.
Hilton Head, South Carolina
If you fancy an all-inclusive getaway, this town will take you and your pet into their arms. With plenty of parks and beaches to keep you busy, there are also pet friendly hotels and resorts that are happy to accept pets up to 50lbs.
Venice, Italy
The sinking city, it’s worth getting a trip to Venice in before it completely vanishes below the waves (we’re kidding…mostly). Thankfully, your pet can tag along too, with lots of pet friendly accommodation options and several museums and galleries happy to accept pets as well as people.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
There are plenty of pet friendly places to stay in Kuala Lumpur, some will even offer a spa experience for your pet as well as you, with grooming services.
Taupō, New Zealand
Lake Taupō is a great place to go with an active dog, as there are tons of bike trails to keep you busy and dog friendly lakeside spots to take your pal for a walk. Dogs are also allowed in some theme parks. You can also visit historic Māori carvings and experience indigenous New Zealand from the water.
Cornwall, England
Another great place for a coastal trip, Cornwall is one of the most popular destinations in the UK for a weekend away. Roll into a traditional pub and you will probably find several dogs snoozing around an open fire, or a resident cat eyeing up your plate of fish and chips.
St. Augustine, Florida

If you or your pet are keen to get out on the water, you can hire kayaks or canoes and take a trip over Mirror Lake to the dog friendly beach on the southwest side.
Transylvania, Romania
While famous internationally as the home of Dracula, Transylvania is a stunning cultural hub full of medieval towns, castles and amazing hiking routes that will treat you and your furry friend to some amazing views.
Snowdonia National Park, Wales
Brits are known for their love of dogs, and the Snowdonia National Park is kitted out with lots of dog-friendly trails and campsites. Seattle, Washington
If you want to travel within the USA, Seattle is a great city to take your pet, particularly if you own a dog. Multiple off leash dog parks and a walkable city center make this a great city for a short break. There is even a cat cafe if you can’t take your own beloved fur baby with you.

20 Top Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations for You and Your Best Travel Buddy
Calling everyone who can't bear the thought of not being with your dog for more than 24 hours... here's the perfect guide to exploring the world with your furry companion.
- Choosing a Destination
- International
It was mid-2008 when Amy Burkert and her husband Rod found themselves adopting a stray German shepherd . The puppy was found near their home in Philadelphia, and after a few weeks of looking for his family to no avail, they decided to adopt him as their own and name him Buster. The issue? The couple, who at the time had a small dog named Ty, was planning a huge trip up to Canada about a month later and hadn't accounted for two dogs coming along.
Burkert searched online for dog-friendly hotels and dog parks along their route but didn't come up with much. The trip went well, but the experience taught her that other people probably were also looking for the same information.
In 2009, she launched GoPetFriendly.com , a comprehensive pet travel platform that quickly took off. Soon after, she and Rod, both who work remotely for their CPA firm, sold their place in Philly, hit the road in an RV, and haven't looked back since.
"In a few months, we will have been on the road for 11 years," Burkert says, adding that Ty and Buster have sadly passed, and they now have a new pup named Myles. "We love it, and by doing that with our dogs, we are walking the talk."
Since we're all attached to our dogs at the hip, here are some of Burkert's recommendations for how you can bring them along for a vacation.
How to Choose a Dog-Friendly Vacation Destination
Consider your itinerary.
There are many things to consider when traveling with your dog , from where you'll go to how you'll get there to fun activities to do along the way. While in the decision-making phase, Burkert recommends thinking about what you and your dog like to do together first.
"Do you like to go to the beach?" she asks. "What about hiking? Exploring cities? Or sitting at a coffee shop watching people walk by? It's important to think about how much your dog physically can and would want to do and what you'd want to do together."
And be prepared to make a few sacrifices for your four-legged companion. Dog-friendly vacation spots can come in various forms. Taking a road trip with your dog to New York City, for example, may not seem like a good spot because of the population density, but there are actually tons of great green spaces for your dog to play.
"That said, you might consider sacrificing your trip to the Guggenheim if you're with your dog," she says.
Think About Where You'll Stay
Your choice of accommodations is another important thing to keep in mind when planning your trip. While some locations have hotels that allow pets , other destinations with more natural surroundings might require flexible arrangements like renting a unique Airbnb or camping.
"A lot of people think that camping is a wonderful thing to do with a dog on vacation, but not if you're planning on leaving him or her in the camper all day," Burkert says. "That isn't much of a vacation for your pet. Instead, try to find a place that will work for you both."
As you decide the best vacation destination for your family (fur babies included), these Burkert-recommended places both domestic and international might just do the trick.
Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations on the East Coast
Eastern vermont.
Among the places on the East Coast to take your dog on vacation, a place called Dog Mountain in the Eastern Vermont town of St. Johnsbury ranks highly for Burkert.
"The people managing it have turned what was a dairy farm into an off-leash dog heaven," she says. "There is a pond, trails, even a dog chapel."
Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania
The town of Jim Thorpe , Pennsylvania, is home to the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway , which offers breathtaking trips through the Pocono Mountains. According to Burkert , the trip is a must for dog owners and is among the best dog-friendly vacation spots in the eastern U.S.
Bar Harbor, Maine
The 5,500-person town of Bar Harbor, Maine on Mount Desert Island is a great place to bring your pet companion, especially if you're interested in hiking at Acadia National Park . This island is the best of both worlds with mountains and sandy beaches within the park, and pet-friendly patios for eating in town. Doggie visitors are encouraged and there are tons of trails both you and your pup will enjoy.
Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations on the West Coast
Bend, oregon.
The 100,000-person town in central Oregon is so obsessed with dogs that they are allowed almost everywhere. Dog-friendly hiking trails are abundant at the foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range, and within the city limits, you'll find many outdoor food carts , food truck parks, and breweries (including the award-winning Deschutes Brewery ), all of which welcome dogs.
San Diego, California
Sunny San Diego is among one of the best dog-friendly vacation spots thanks to its many open areas that accommodate them. If your pup likes to play on the beach, there are plenty of dog beaches and off-leash dog parks in and around this SoCal city. Check out Fiesta Island in Mission Bay, or Morley Field Dog Park in San Diego's famed Balboa Park .
If you're a lover of the sea, take advantage of SD's coastal location and rent a boat or a yacht to let your dog feel the wind in her hair. If you're looking for an activity that will satisfy your pup's competitive nature, catch a Padres baseball game at Petco Park where they have a special viewing area called The Barkyard just for people and their pets.
Northern Arizona
Many people are surprised to learn that Grand Canyon National Park , located in Northern Arizona, is a vacation spot that allows dogs. As Burkert explains , the South Rim is your best bet if you're bringing your furry friend.
Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations in the Midwest
Chicago, illinois.
"I love going to Chicago with dogs ," says Burkert. She suggests checking out the trails along Lake Michigan and exploring Navy Pier, as just a few examples of things to do.
When you get hungry, grab a slice on the patio with your pup at Paradise Park or a pint at Empirical Brewery , which is also home to a colony of beloved brewery cats .
Grand Haven, Michigan
Grand Haven is a picturesque town on Michigan's West Coast loved by tourists and their dog companions alike, mainly for the number of greenspaces and beaches. Grand Haven City Beach is a great place to go with your pup on a warm summer day. The vacation town even boasts the Must Love Dogs Boutique & Spa , a pet-friendly shopping spot where you can bring your pup to sniff around the store.
Indianapolis, Indiana
Indianapolis is filled with great places to take your dog on vacation, including breweries, outdoor restaurants, and open spaces like White River State Park . The city's growing number of outdoor dining spots that allow dogs makes Indy a no-brainer for foodies bringing along their fur babies.
Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations in the Southern U.S.
Asheville, north carolina.
The sprawling Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C., allows dogs on its grounds and outdoor patios (but not inside buildings). Still, at more than 8,000 acres to explore, it's absolutely worth bringing along the pooch, especially on a beautiful day. Once you've gotten your steps in stomping around the mansion gardens, the nearby town of Asheville has a ton of pet-friendly activities for the two of you to take on, as well. Check out the street art in downtown Asheville, or sniff out some local goodies at one of the town's many bustling outdoor farmer's markets. After you've gotten your fix of city life, head out to explore the miles of trails in the Blue Ridge Mountains and book a camping spot for your and your furry friend to soak in the sounds of nature.
Charleston, South Carolina
Charleston is one of the most dog-friendly U.S. cities on our list, featuring many pets-allowed restaurants like Brown Dog Deli and Poogan's Porch , named after the friendly neighborhood dog who greeted guests until he passed in 1979.
If your dog wants to live like a princess for a day, Charleston Carriage Works offers historical tours of the city and allows dogs to come along for the ride in style. When you're ready to stretch your legs, check out Charleston's beaches at Sullivan's Island and Morris Island . If the weather isn't favorable, take your dog for a dip in the indoor dog pool at Wag-n-Splash .
Sarasota, Florida
Brohard Beach and Paw Park is among the top places to go in Sarasota if you have a pup in tow. The beach is especially accommodating for pet parents with its dog showers and fire hydrants for puppy bathroom breaks, according to Burkert.
International Dog-Friendly Vacation Ideas
Before you head out on an international adventure with your favorite travel buddy, keep in mind that there can be potential health risks when taking your dog on long flights . It may make more sense to explore the spots where you can safely bring your dog along in the car on a road trip, or even via train travel , before booking a trip to one of these pet-friendly international cities. As always, it's best to talk with your veterinarian about whether it's safe for your dog to accompany you on long flights or to visit other countries. Your vet will help you understand the risks and what you need to know before your pup gets a new passport stamp.
Venice, Italy
While may not be many sprawling greenspaces in Venice, dogs are still welcome in the charming Italian city limits. Pups are allowed in many water boats and are able to stroll the street with you. Just be aware that sometimes the small alleyways can be crushingly busy, so it's best to go in the off-season in November–March so your pup's not overwhelmed with the crowds.
Tokyo, Japan
Japan celebrates six native dog breeds , called the Nihon Ken, which have been designated as national monuments. So as you can imagine, the country is incredibly dog-friendly . Dogs are allowed in hotels, stores, and some restaurants, and there are tons of dog parks for them to run in cities like Tokyo. Some of the best of the capital city include Yoyogi Park Dog Run , Honmoku Sancho Park , and Ueno Park .
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Recognized as one of North America's most dog-friendly cities, Vancouver is well-known as a great destination for dogs and their human counterparts looking for an adventure. While here, make a stop at any (or all!) of the great beaches or off-leash parks throughout the city, and don't miss a day playing at the world-renowned Stanley Park and Arboretum.
When you get hungry, take an afternoon stroll through the Mainstreet Station Farmer's Market on Wednesdays in the summer months. Or explore all that Granville Island public market has to offer, from food to art to some pretty cool historical architecture, any day of the week. Outside of the city limits, Vancouver also has a lot to offer nature lovers, including some of the best hiking you'll ever do in every season.

Pets and animals, pets and animals | second dead humpback whale seen in atlantic washes ashore in virginia beach.
A dead humpback whale was spotted floating off Virginia Beach before washing ashore Monday morning at False Cape State Park. It was the second whale to wash up in Virginia Beach in as many days.
The first washed ashore early Sunday morning near 25th Street in Virginia Beach.
The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center’s Stranding Response Program team monitored the second whale and tracked it to the state park, said Kristina Scott, a spokesperson for the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center. The team is working with park staff and will assess the second whale in the next few days, Scott said. The Stranding Response Program coordinates responses for marine mammals, such as whales, and sea turtles that come ashore in Virginia.
The stranding response team brought the first whale , considered a sub-adult, up the shore to avoid high tide Sunday and began a necropsy Monday to gather as much data as possible and try to determine how the whale died, Scott said. As of Monday afternoon, NOAA said, the necropsy was still underway. Scientists performing the necropsy will likely use a technique called “peeling the banana,” in which they split the whale from mouth to tail, catalog and take samples. The samples help researchers determine the mammal’s diet, the health of its organs and potential cause of death.
Humpback whales pass through the Mid-Atlantic waters during their annual migration. The whales travel to the Caribbean in the winter, where they breed and give birth, then head back toward New England to feed during the spring and summer.
“Approaching marine mammals can be extremely unsafe for both humans and the animal,” Andrea Gomez, NOAA public affairs officer, said. “We ask the public to maintain a safe distance from the whales, and to please report all stranded marine mammals and sea turtles to NOAA’s marine mammal and sea turtle stranding hotline 866-755-6622 to be directed to a trained responder.”

Comedian Pete Davidson is stopping by Mobile’s Saenger Theatre on Saturday, March 23, as part of his ongoing “Prehab Tour.” Tickets to see the “Saturday Night Live” alum are available now, starting at $41.
The tour title references Davidson’s recent stint in treatment for substance abuse issues — a common theme in his sets.
“I am fresh out of rehab, everyone,” Davidson said to the crowd at a September show in Las Vegas, according to People . “I got that post-rehab glow. Seventh time’s the charm!”
The 30-year-old standup comic and actor is best known for his time on SNL, where he was a cast member for eight seasons.
The New York native also co-wrote, executive produced and starred in “The King of Staten Island.” He has been featured in films like “Trainwreck,” “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” “Big Time Adolescence” and “Set It Up.”
The Saenger Theatre website warns audiences that this will be a phone-free experience, and any use of cellphones, cameras, or recording devices will result in removal from the theater. The venue is at 6 S. Joachim St. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m.

America’s Best Pet Friendly Ghost Tours
- By Amy at GoPetFriendly.com
- October 12, 2022
There’s nothing better than putting a little howl into your Halloween celebration. And taking your pup on a pet friendly ghost tour is a fiendishly perfect way to celebrate the holiday!
Taking a pet friendly ghost tour is a popular activity around Halloween. But these tours are a fun way to learning the history of some of America’s oldest cities any time of the year!
Take A Pet Friendly Ghost Tour
When looking for a pet friendly ghost tour, focus on walking tours conducted exclusively outdoors. These tours are more likely to welcome your furry partner in crime.
There are some tour operators who believe dogs are especially sensitive to the paranormal and will make special accommodations for them. If you find a tour you really want to take, and it involves going inside building or riding on a bus, ask if they’ll allow you to bring your pet in a carrier or stroller.
Naturally, October is a very popular month to take a pet friendly ghost tour. Expect to book your place in advance, because few tour operators allow walk-ins. (Those that do are noted below.)
Check the company’s website carefully for information on how to make reservations and where to join the tour. Keep in mind that many tour companies offer non-spooky tours as well, if you have small kids or scaredy cats.

Calling all Pete Davidson fans: Head over to Atlantic City this summer.

‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ will be on Disney+ a day early
(Gray News) – Taylor Swift’s massively successful Eras Tour concert film will begin streaming on Disney+ starting March 14, a day earlier than previously thought.
Disney+ made the announcement last month that it will stream “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” starting March 15.
However, in a new trailer Monday , it was clarified that the movie will begin streaming March 14 at 9 p.m. ET.
The extended version of the film will include Swift’s performance of “Cardigan,” which had been cut from the rental version, and four additional acoustic songs.
Disney did not say which acoustic songs would be featured, but based on when the film was shot during Swift’s concerts in Los Angeles, it’s likely those songs are “Maroon,” “Death by a Thousand Cuts,” “You Are in Love” and “I Can See You.”
It’s also unconfirmed how much Disney paid for the streaming rights to the movie, but according to a report from Puck News , the deal was worth $75 million. The report said that Disney outbid Netflix and Universal for the streaming rights.
According to Variety , the movie pulled in $261.7 million at the global box office after its Oct. 13 debut, making it the highest-grossing concert film of all time.
Following its successful run in theaters, the movie has been available to rent for $19.89 (Swift’s birth year) on Amazon and other rental services.

Caitlin clark shatters ncaa basketball scoring record, passes pete maravich, caitlin clark new ncaa hoops scoring record ... surpasses pistol pete, 1.6k 3/3/2024 11:54 am pt.
Move over Pete Maravich , make way for Caitlin Clark ... there's a new all-time leading scorer in college basketball.
Caitlin just surpassed Pistol Pete as the leading scorer in NCAA Division I hoops, draining a couple free throws at the end of the first half of Sunday's game between her Iowa Hawkeyes and the Ohio State Buckeyes.
CC entered the game needing 18 points to pass Pete, and Iowa fans went bananas when she sank two free throws to break the longstanding record.
There's still a second half to play, so Caitlin's going to put more distance between herself and Pete, who scored 3,667 points at Louisiana State University way back in the day.
Caitlin was already the greatest scorer in women's college basketball history, breaking the women's scoring record last month when she eclipsed Kelsey Plum 's record of 3,527 points ... and now she stands above the rest in all of college basketball.
Some thought Pete's record would never be broken ... and he did it all in 3 seasons from 1967 to 1970 at LSU, before freshman played and before the 3-point shot was a thing.
Caitlin broke the record in her final home game, with former WNBA MVP Maya Moore in attendance.
CC's still got a lot more hoops to play ... Iowa plays in the Big 10 conference tournament before the NCAA tournament ... so expect a lot more buckets from Caitlin.
When she's done rewriting the college record books in a few weeks, Caitlin will set her sights on a new chapter ... she's already declared for the 2024 WNBA Draft.
Congrats, Caitlin!!!
