Corregidor Island Tour From Siargao: Complete Guide

Corregidor Island is found just off the coast of Siargao. It has several beautiful beaches and coves but it is well known for its palm tree-covered hills, which visitors can reach after undertaking a small hike from the beach. A Corregidor Island tour is part of many of the island-hopping trips that leave Siargao every day.

Table of Contents

WHERE IS CORREGIDOR ISLAND

Corregidor Island (also known as Casolian Island is south of the popular surf island Siargao in the south of the Philippines. There are a number of smaller islands nearby Siargao that are popular for island hopping, the most popular route is the day-trip to Daku, Guyam, and Naked Island .

From Siargao, it is about a 45-minute boat journey if you leave General Luna on a classic, outrigger boat. It’s important to note that on Google Maps, the island is listed as ‘Casolian Island’. There is another island in the Philippines, closer to Manila, which is also called Corregidor Island and shows up when you search it on Google Maps.

HOW TO GET TO CORREGIDOR ISLAND

To get to Corregidor Island from Siargao Island the most common way is to join a group tour that includes Corregidor but also another one or two island visits. For less than $25 USD, you can visit Corregidor Island and another spot to complete your day-trip. It is possible to book a private boat tour but this will be much more expensive. There are no public transportation options.

BOOKING A TOUR TO CORREGIDOR ISLAND FROM SIARGAO ISLAND

To book your Siargao Island hopping experience online, the best price and most reliable one is  this activity on Klook . This activity includes four islands all in one day. You get to visit Corregidor, Naked Island, Daku Island, and Guyam. It costs slightly more than the regular three-island trip but that’s because you get four islands and visit them all in one day!

The price is very similar to what you will find at the street vendors (and likely on the same boat anyway). You get your full day of island hopping and lunch included. It’s hard to go wrong.

Book your tour now: FOUR ISLAND TOUR (Corregidor, Naked, Daku, Guyam)

I’ve done the tour as the three-island, four-island and even Corregidor in combination with Mamon & La Janosa. It’s fair to say I’ve spent some time island-hopping out of Siargao.

MY EXPERIENCE ON CORREGIDOR ISLAND, SIARGAO

I’ve been to Corregidor Island twice now and both times were a fantastic experience. However, they were on different island-hopping itineraries. On the first occasion, I did the  FOUR ISLAND TOUR (Corregidor, Naked, Daku, Guyam)  and on the second occasion, two years later, I visited Mamon Island and then Corregidor.

There are many ways to include Corregidor Island in your itinerary. Therefore, in this blog post, I will just share my experience mostly about Corregidor Island not all of the islands included in the itinerary as it can vary.

Corregidor Island is one of my favorite islands to visit near Siargao because it has a small element of adventure rather than just the regular beach hangouts you find at the other islands like Guyam and Naked. Before our boat docked, I sent the drone up so I could show you guys an aerial of just how pristine the waters are around the island!

We jumped off the boat and met our guide. The guide is always organized by your boat crew and it is a requirement. It’s a great way for the local residents to monitor the visitors to the island and to make a small living by guiding tourists up the hill to visit the palm trees and check out the views of Corregidor Island. The walk takes about 30-minutes each way in total and you probably want about 30-minutes at the top of the hill to explore the palms, take some photos and enjoy the view.

So, after finding our guide, we set off through the village where karaoke was blaring and the little kids all offered high fives and beautiful smiles! It’s such a picturesque village with a small church, palm trees and a grass corridor through the middle that connects the beach to the top of the hill. It’s a nice walk and gives you some insight into how the island residents are living.

corregidor island siargao tour

The walk leaves the village and veers into the trees as you begin to enjoy a little bit of incline in the humid conditions. If you aren’t used to hiking or the humidity you may find this walk quite uncomfortable, even though it is very short and easy. It’s exposed at the top of the hill so packing sunscreen and wearing a hat is ideal. Many people get very burnt here as they hike in swimwear.

Once you reach the first little summit, you are now in the land of palm trees. It’s a pretty unique landscape of long grass, a collection of scattered palms and views of the ocean on all sides. There aren’t many places like it!

There are lots of little paths shooting off in all directions but basically there is no wrong or right way to explore Corregidor Island. Both times I’ve visited, we headed out all the way to the farthest point on the island to check out the coves on either side. Along the way, you will find a bent palm tree that has become a bit of a photo-op spot, which I’m sure your guide will point out for you.

To be honest, the best thing to do is just wander around and find new angles and explore different areas. With hundreds of palms up on the hill, it truly is a sight to behold and I’ve found different spots on both of my visits.

corregidor island siargao tour

After exploring the palm tree hill, we made the trek back down into the village. With 40-minutes left before our boat left to head back to Siargao, we got into an intense sand-volleyball match and really soaked in the island vibes.

If you want to read about the tri-island hopping nearby that can also include Corregidor Island on the itinerary I’ll leave that blog post link here:  SIARGAO ISLAND HOPPING – GUYAM, DAKU & NAKED ISLAND

And again, if you want to book the four-island hopping trip that includes Corregidor Island, Guyam, Daku and Naked all in one day that link is here: FOUR ISLAND TOUR

CORREGIDOR ISLAND MAP

As I mentioned earlier, on Google Maps you will find it named Casolian Island instead of Corregidor Island. However, everywhere on Siargao and all of the tour operators most definitely call the island Corregidor.

WHERE I STAYED ON SIARGAO ISLAND

Siargao is pretty straightforward when it comes to picking a region to stay. 90% of people choose to stay somewhere near General Luna. All of the bars, restaurants, tours, ports, and hotels are near General Luna and Cloud 9 surf break.

There are a couple of other regions you could stay in like Pacifico but unless you are purposely looking for isolation, General Luna is your spot. So what are my suggestions for where to stay in General Luna?

First, I’ll tell you where I stayed. Because I stayed for over a month, I managed to find an Airbnb . It was 4 blocks back from the beach, had wi-fi, A/C, a private bathroom, patio and inside were just two bunk beds. It was super basic and I stayed here with two mates and my sister. It was 900 USD for the entire month, which we split four ways so it was just $225 each.

There’s a photo below of our sweet Airbnb pad on Siargao Island.

Best time to visit Siargao Island

The best time to visit Siargao depends on what you are looking for. Many consider the best time of year when the weather is best but that also means crowds. I will give you a few options below about when is the best month to visit Siargao Island :

September: Siargao hosts the ‘Cloud 9 Surfing Cup’ each September, an official WSL Pro event

July – November: The best time period for surfing in Siargao is July until November. The easterly Mindanao current provides the islands with waves that came from the deepest regions of the Pacific.

March-May: If you aren’t as interested in the surf but are craving that sun. March until May should bring you guaranteed sunny days. But it’s the Philippines so you can’t guarantee it.

Where is Siargao Island Located

Siargao is located in the region of Mindanao in the Philippines. Mindanao is the southern region of the Philippines.

How to get to Siargao Island

When I visited in 2017 there was only one flight a day from Manila and one from Cebu. Now there are 10-15 flights a day so the question of how to get to Siargao has become much easier. Without going into deep detail on every single option. These are the options for how to get to Siargao:

  • Fly from Manila $90-$100
  • Fry from Cebu  $90-$100
  • Ferry from Surigao City to Siargao Island $5

There are ferries that leave from Manila and Cebu but they go to Surigao City first and then Siargao Island.

Hello! Can you personally recommend doing the tri island with Corregidor Island in 1 day or you would rather do Corregidor Island with Mamon separately?

It’s going to be my first time in July, staying for 7 nights and another Siargao trip perhaps in April-May 2023 because I still have a paid 7-night booking at the another hotel that’s reopening much later hence 2 separate trips. 😆

MY EXPERIENCE ON THE CORREGIDOR TOUR

At 10 am, my friends and I jumped on our private boat that was waiting on the beach directly in front of the Secret Spot Hostel. The trip over the channel to the island is a 45-minute journey, passing Naked Island and Hanoyoy Island.

The skipper beached the boat on Corregidor Beach, a glistening white sand coastline complemented by a palm tree forest, turquoise water, and a colorful reef.

I was in disbelief of how incredibly beautiful this island is before I even stepped foot off the boat.

The first few hours on the Corregidor Island Tour were spent snorkeling in the crystal clear waters, climbing palm trees, and enjoying a freshly cooked barbeque lunch and cold beers.

The local residents of Corregidor Island Siargao offer cooking services on the island, so we handed over our food and they prepared a feast for us all. The cost for the cooks is included in the Corregidor tour price.

After lunch, we decided to hike to the other side of the island, passing by a palm tree rainforest and a small local village in the center of the island.

There were kids playing basketball, teenagers singing karaoke from their homes, and elderly people watering their gardens. The beautifully slow pace of life on this island is something else!

We continued along a pebbly beach and up a large grass hill, and at the top was one of the most spectacular landscapes I have ever seen.

Coconut palm trees, rolling hills, long grass, herds of water buffaloes, and secluded beaches. I literally felt like I was dreaming… My friends and I were in awe and speechless of what laid in front of our eyes!

There is so much exploring to do on Corregidor Island Siargao and many awesome spots for photo opportunities.

I sent up my drone camera to get some aerial photos and videos which was the best idea I had all day. The view of the island from the air had me in disbelief that this place exists!

The day was coming to an end so we made our way back to the starting point of our hike, had another quick swim in the ocean, and jumped on board our boat for departure back to Siargao.

Despite the valiant efforts of American and Filipino soldiers, the island eventually fell to the Japanese after a fierce defense lasting several months.

Corregidor Island became a key Japanese stronghold, effectively cutting off the American and Filipino forces from retaking Manila. The island endured heavy bombardment and constant air raids during the occupation, resulting in extensive damage.

Surfing At Cloud 9

Siargao is best known as the surf capital of the Philippines. All around the island you can find beautiful surf spots, but none can beat Cloud 9. This section of waves are more for the advanced surfers, but if you are a beginner head to Jacking Horse. This is where you will find the more forgiving waves. Whether you just want to walk along the Cloud 9 Boardwalk or chill with a Shaka Bowl this small town in Siargao has some of the best vibes in the Philippines.

Palm Tree Lookout

The Palm Tree Lookout in Siargao has the best views on the Island, stretching out as far as the eye can see. Palm trees fill the island of Siargao, whilst surfers fill the shores. Siargao has recently become our favourite island in the Philippines, you will soon see why.

Palm Tree Lookout Siargao

The Palm Tree Road Siargao

This stop should be on top of everyone list when visiting the island. Travel out of the main tourist towns to explore the heart of Siargao. Although we are sure there are many amazing roads covered in Palm Trees, none can compete with this Palm Tree Road .

The Palm Tree Rope Swing

The Palm Tree Rope Swing on Siargao Island has become one of the most iconic spots to visit. Thanks to social media  the palm tree rope swing which was once a local spot, has become a top tourist attraction in the Philippines. Nestled away in the middle of the island is the Maasin River. This is where you will find the famous bent palm tree swing. You can spend hours here mastering your flips into the river.

Magpupungko Rock Pool

The Island of Siargao isn’t all about surfing and palm trees, it is also homed to the magnificent Magpupungko Rock Pools . These huge rock pools are one of the biggest and deepest, with crystal clear water we have ever come across. After living on Rottnest Island in Western Australia where there is a lot of rock pools, we think we are quite good judges.

Siargao Travel Tips ✔️

Best Time To Visit 🕒

Like most of the Philippines Siargao has a wet and dry season. Luckily the dry is a lot longer than the wet, however, it is the Philippines so anything can happen.

March – November:  The dry season is the best time to visit Siargao. The waves get bigger for the surfers between September-November.

December – February : The wet season, we recommend you avoid these dates.

Wifi &  SIM Cards Siargao 📱

The Wifi in Siargao is renowned for not being good, much like the rest of the Philippines. So most people rely on their phones. If you need to get a Sim Card whilst you are in the Philippines you can organise one right here.

Siargao Surf Competition 🏄‍♂️

Every year Siargao Island hosts an international surfing competition. This is typically around September-October and means the Island becomes a lot busier. If you are a keen surfer then this is the time to visit, for other’s you might want to avoid the competition.

Our Best Meal In Siargao 🍕

Although defiantly not the cheapest place on the Island, but in this case, you get what you pay for. At the Isla Cabana restaurant, the food was out of this world, you can order a mixture of local or western dishes.

Best Area To Stay In Siargao 🛏️

The most popular area of Siargao is General Luna, here you will find everything you need from bars and clubs to healthy breakfast spots. The main stretch of road is funnily enough called Tourism Road.

Premium Island Hopping Corregidor

This tour is especially meant as a couple getaway or friends who want to avoid the tourist traps and crowds and on top of that something most visitors don’t get to see.

On this premium tour we will cover 35km on our speed boat and on the way see multiple breathtaking locations. Our first stop is Guyam island, where just as on our standard snorkel tour, we will have a chance to be the first boat there (which we usually are) and get to enjoy the island completely alone. Once you are ready, we will then hop back into the boat and make the trip to the beautiful Corregidor Island, where the beach chairs of a small of local beach resort will wait for you to relax, drink a fresh coconut or have a second breakfast.

You can then choose to make the hike up the hills or, if you prefer, we will go snorkeling off the island on one of the absolute best reefs around Siargao where fishing is prohibited, and therefore offers a stunningly healthy reef with lots of fishes to observe. There is enough time to do both activities on the island if you wish. Just like on Guyam, chances to be alone at the beach are quite high. You will be far from noise of other people and truly recharge. Unlike all the other islands, on Corregidor you have the option to order a proper breakfast or lunch from the resort if you get hungry.

On the way back you have the option to stop at Naked island to have a quick swim and walk around on the small sandbar island before we head back to Siargao main island. You can spend the 5 hours on our tour where and how you please!

As on all our tours, we will make sure to take pictures of you, even underwater, so you have memories to take home.

What's included?

  • 3 islands. Guyam before other boats get there, Corregidor Island & Naked Island optional.

  • Water and snacks (bananas & coco bread)

  • Entry and environmental fees on all 3 islands

Requirements

  • One towel for the group and maybe a small snack.

Corregidor Island Siargao: What to Expect and Do

One of the highlights of our Siargao trip together with the Jeepsetters Team is when we had our Tri-Island tour, Naked, Daku, and Guyam Island with Corregidor Island tour . I wasn’t able to ask why it was named as Corregidor Island but I’m very sure it’s totally different from the one in Luzon. Corregidor Island could also be known as the B atanes-feels of Siargao .

We were actually picking if we’re to go to Sohoton Cove + Bucas Grande or Corregidor Island, but since it’s not much the season for jellyfish (where Bucas Grande is well-known for), we opted for Corregidor Island courtesy of GotMarked Tours , managed by a good friend, Mark Roa.

Table of Contents

Corregidor Island: Start of Island Tour

The quaint island of Corregidor is located around one (1) hour from the Boulevard, where all island tours start.

We started our day going to Boulevard at around 7:00 AM. Had our quick coffee and breakfast which only cost us around Php 50 each. After a while, Karl, our tour guide, went over and greeted us, and waited for us to finish so we could start with the tour as time easily slips by. When everyone is finished with their meals, we head off to the registration and then the boat. Corregidor Island Siargao

The boulevard itself has stunning crystal clear waters and white sand already, if it’s not beside the wet market, we think we would want to swim and stay there for a while. When we were all hopped in on the boat, our tour guide made some points about what we will do for today and where we will be.

Our first stop would be Corregidor Island, then Naked Island , Daku Island , and Guyam Island by the afternoon.

After a mere one (1) hour of boat travel, we arrived at Corregidor Island at SEArenity Shore Beach Resort. We occupied a cottage, which is also a part of what we paid for and will be there up until noontime for lunch.

corregidor-island-siargao-what-to-expect-and-do

We took our time to quite enjoy the beach, the fine white sand we are in, and the turquoise blue waters in front of us. Islands in this part of the Philippines truly are a piece of gem, and the Philippines is the biggest gem in itself. We took our time to take photos, of us, and our friends. After a short while, Karl told us if we would want to go hike, just let him know.

In Google Maps, the island is named as Casolian Island , but locals and tour operators refer to it as Corregidor Island.

The Hike to the Batanes Feels of Siargao

corregidor-island-siargao-what-to-expect-and-do

Karl asked one local to be our guide in this hike, the Batanes Feels of Siargao needed a short hike in order to get to the highest part of the island where there’s a 360-degree view of the area. Corregidor Island Siargao

When we started hiking, I’m actually surprised there was a huge community on the island. We passed by houses that were built in concrete, and an Iglesia ni Cristo church at the middle of the grassy road. The grassy road is like a peaceful part of the community, totally different from the sandy roads of other islands. This one is with bermudagrass growing everywhere. It’s actually like more magical if there were butterflies flying around.

corregidor-island-siargao-what-to-expect-and-do

A few minutes more, we started ascending to the summit, but it won’t be noted as a mountain climb, but rather a trek. The hills in this land are like landscaped, having the highest hill the views of the island. It was a trek with scorching heat, and so if one had not worn any sun protection, that one is doomed, or rather getting more melanin that what one is supposed to.

At the middle of the island where this hill lies, a great view is hovering in the field, and each angle is like picture-perfect. It’s a photographer’s delight to see such land. Not vast but from the horizon, you’d see the sun and the sea.

corregidor-island-siargao-what-to-expect-and-do

The most notable tree you can find on this island are the coconut trees displaying at the start of the horizon. Our guide told us one of the most photographed areas in the land, that one where Instagrammers are climbing up to get a shot. A coconut tree that is inclined and displayed at a perfect spot, like it was grown and designed to be the most photographed tree of all.

The Inclined Coconut Tree

Not far from the inclined coconut tree spot is another hill with coconut trees displayed like a painting in the background. One of the many areas where Instagrammers are gathering to take a good photo. Corregidor Island Siargao

corregidor-island-siargao-what-to-expect-and-do

Our guide said there is another spot to go but our group, and most of our friends are hungry and thirsty as we weren’t informed the trek will be long and we did not also expect that the sun will rise this high and mighty. That spot was where the stairs are located.

corregidor-island-siargao-what-to-expect-and-do

So we all went back after a group decision. We were then divided into two groups but the other one with no guide to go back from where we came from. The guide was walking with the girls on the first group and the second group didn’t know they were already left behind because they kept on talking more pictures while walking. So Franco and I decided to stay in the middle and waited for a little while so we could keep the left-behind group in check.

Feeling so irritated from the heat and turn of events and our guide not being a ‘guide’, my friend who’s with me became a little pissed at him. But while he was taking his time cursing the guide, I became a look-out for the second group so they won’t get lost. They found us waving at them and finally, we got a hold of them, not knowing anything from what happened there for a second. Anyway, both groups were then gathered again and we started walking back altogether to the shore.

corregidor-island-siargao-what-to-expect-and-do

When we got back, a perfect treat was waiting in front of us. Karl was waving and our food was already served at the table. A boodle setup with rice put into words “SIARGAO” surrounded by seafood, chicken, and fruits. A few ice-cold Coca-cola and Royal soft drinks were also waiting for us. It was an after hike delight!

We felt so refreshed and regenerated after a great meal. Oh, by the way, this type of meal served is only available when you opt for the Corregidor Island tour with Tri-Island tours.

They purposely throw food next to tourists so they swim within arm length. We got told to stay 5-6 meters away with the warning to get a big fine when you go closer. No guide said a word when people reached out to the whale sharks. Awful to realize this happens on a daily base. Read more Written February 11, 2024

  • Nenna91 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Horrible Horrible experience offered by Taug Whaleshark watching in Lila. The water is overcrowded by tourists packed on small boats that are sorrounding the animal. The whale shark is fed continuously with minced fish to keep the whale close to shore. The water is so smelly and dirty that the visibility is really low. At the briefing we were told to keep at least 5 m distance from the whale, however none respected the rule and the tourists were disturbing the animal all the time. After 20 minutes the visit is done and other boats are already on the shore to take your place around the whale. We spent 3000 pesos for two people, really not worthy: inhumane and not wild at all.

Corregidor Island Siargao The boulevard itself has stunning crystal clear waters and white sand already, if it’s not beside the wet market, we think we would want to swim and stay there for a while. When we were all hopped in on the boat, our tour guide made some points about what we will do for today and where we will be. Our first stop would be Corregidor Island, then Naked Island , Daku Island , and Guyam Island by the afternoon.

DOT sees Siargao Island leading Caraga’s Holy Week tourism resurgence

KAWHAGAN ISLAND. A group enjoys the clear waters on Kawhagan Island, Del Carmen, Siargao Island.

Ivy Marie Mangadlao/Rappler

BUTUAN, Philippines – Travelers have begun flocking to Caraga, especially Siargao Island , to take a break ahead of the holidays and spend the remaining days of the Holy Week in the region, renowned for its islands and ecotourism.

Tourism officials anticipate a staggering increase of 599.25% in Caraga’s tourist arrivals this week alone, attributed to the religious holidays, with the world-renowned Siargao Island being the driving factor, compared to the same period in 2023.

The projection is attributed to significant improvements that have made the region’s tourism destinations more accessible to travelers, such as the increased frequency of boat trips from the mainland to the islands and direct flights from other parts of the country.

corregidor island siargao tour

Currently, there are 12 to 14 inbound flights to Sayak Airport in Del Carmen town, Siargao, Surigao del Norte, varying by the day of the week, originating from Metro Manila, Cebu, Clark, and Davao.

In terms of sea travel, there are at least six trips daily from Surigao City to Dapa, and another two trips from there to Del Carmen in Siargao.

High expectations

The Department of Tourism (DOT) in Caraga anticipates over 38,137 tourists in Siargao and elsewhere in the Caraga region until Easter Sunday.

During the 2023 Holy Week, the region only logged 5,454 tourists, a performance not so impressive given that the country was still recovering from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the poor accessibility to its islands.

Based on the DOT’s projections for this week, Siargao Island’s tourist arrivals would increase by 785.56%, totaling 14,904 visitors compared to the 2023 record of 1,683 total arrivals.

Island hopping has been one of the major tourism activities in Siargao, especially in General Luna town.

DOT-Caraga Director Ivonnie Dumadag said the number of boats for tourists has been augmented by pools of boat operators from other Surigao del Norte towns not known to cater to island-hoppers.

This, according to Dumadag, was enough to accommodate the surge of tourists visiting the beaches on popular island destinations like the tri-island Daku, Naked, and Guyam.

During last year’s Holy Week, General Luna experienced a shortage of boats for island-hopping adventures, prompting former Surigao del Norte governor and now town Mayor Sol Matugas to apologize on social media .

Eco-tourism

In Del Carmen, where the famous Sugba Lagoon is located, local officials said they have strictly enforced environmental safeguards and are prepared to regulate the number of tourists visiting the town’s tourism spots if needed.

Del Carmen tourism officer Leilani Lipio said as many as 1,500 visitors were expected in the town until Maundy Thursday alone, and around 2,000 to 3,000 more were expected on Good Friday and Black Saturday.

Lipio said they have already regulated the number of tourists allowed at Sugba Lagoon to 300 at most per batch or every three hours. Afterward, the boats either return to the tourism center or proceed to the two other island destinations – Pamomoan Beach and Kawhagan Island.

Del Carmen is known for its ecotourism destinations, and its local government has been strict when it comes to environmental conservation.

Boat, Canoe, Canoeing

Measures in place

Dumadag said the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has been helping with enhancing security measures at local seaports and airports, managing the influx of tourists, organizing queues, and streamlining procedures to prevent extensive waiting lines.

She said the DOT also tapped local disaster risk reduction operation centers to set up calling centers and ensure that personnel are available to respond in case of emergencies.

Dumadag said much of the focus has been on Siargao Island given its stature as a major tourism draw in the region.

“The DOT regional satellite office in General Luna will remain open throughout Holy Week to monitor tourist arrivals, accommodation bookings, oversee major destinations on the island, and attend to tourists’ concerns,” she said. – Rappler.com
