For more than 40 years, Lance Rice , a gifted beer historian with autism from Vermilion, Ohio, has had a dream of travelling the nation to explore some of the country’s greatest breweries—all to write a book about the history and culture of American beer.

His acclaimed journey is titled Lance’s Brewery Tour , with his nephew, Andrew Rice, joining the excursion to document the trip for a future independent film released by Rare Brain Studios. As a project aiming to showcase the “beauty of autism, and the power of never giving up your dream,” Rice will visit 16 breweries during his travels, which started June 20 and runs through July 10. Rice’s first stop was Great Lakes Brewing Company of Cleveland, Ohio, and his last planned visit will be at Harpoon Brewery in Boston, Mass.

On July 3 , the Lance’s Brewery Tour team will hit Philadelphia’s suburbs to visit Downingtown ’s Victory Brewing Company , not only a stop on the tour, but also a partner in the project. As part of Lance’s visit, Victory will host a charitable happy hour from 4–7 p.m., to contribute to Lance’s quest and the  “Beer. Autism. Hope.” campaign, donating a portion of the sales to the cause.

Lance’s Brewery Tour was made possible by the generous support raised from his successful Kickstarter campaign, as well as the charitable contributions from breweries, including Victory Brewing Company. One hundred percent of the Kickstarter donations go to Lance’s Brewery Tour—which is more than just a film and book. Through Lance’s Brewery Tour, they will be able to establish a charity called Lance’s Room, which will help others with autism attend college, receive vocational training and more.

Victory Brewing Co. Announces Monkeyfest Experiential Tour

VBC Juicy Monkey VBC 9813 Edit | Yuengling

Victory Brewing Company continues to dominate regional craft beer through the impact of their Monkey franchise and its ability to reach new drinkers. Golden Monkey, Victory’s flagship brand holds rank as the #1 Belgian Ale in the U.S. while its sour sibling, Sour Monkey, ranks as the #1 Sour in the U.S. Last year’s launch of Berry Monkey proved the franchise shows no signs of slowing as it quickly became a top 5 launch across the entire craft segment.1 To harness the passion consumers have shown for these unique, fun-loving brands, Victory will partner with Wasserman Next Gen on a 5-city Monkeyfest experiential tour as part of their “It’s Monkey Time” campaign.

VBC_Juicy_Monkey_VBC_9889-Edit

The “It’s Monkey Time” campaign spotlights the many ways Victory fans enjoy and embrace the Monkeys. Meant to capture that 5-pm Friday feeling any time, and anywhere, drinkers are encouraged to enjoy the big energy, big flavor yet accessible and easy-to-drink varieties that the Victory Monkeys offer. The Monkeyfest multi-city tour is a natural evolution of Victory’s campaign, meant to bring a unique experience to existing and new drinkers. Included in that fanbase are those part of the Monkey Crew – Victory’s inner circle fan club that boasts hundreds of active advocates who drive influence in their local markets through Monkey Crew member ambassadorship.

On Saturday, May 13th in Atlanta, Georgia, the Monkeyfest tour will commence with plans to travel up the East Coast to Brooklyn – providing consumers with the chance to join a one-of-a- kind Monkey branded experience at some of Victory’s most valued partner venues. The tour will hit major Victory markets before the finale at Victory’s Parkesburg, PA Production Brewery & Taproom to wrap up summer. More details on location specifics to be released in the coming weeks, with high level timeline below:

  • –  Atlanta on May 13th at Boxcar
  • –  Charlotte on May 20th at Charlotte Beer Garden
  • –  Cleveland on June 4th at Wild Eagle Saloon
  • –  Pittsburgh on June 10th at 5 Iron Golf
  • –  Brooklyn on June 23rd at TailGate BK

To add to the excitement of Victory’s Monkeyfest Tour, Victory recently announced the launch of the newest Monkey to their crew – Juicy Monkey Hazy Imperial IPA. Set only to hit limited markets right now, those cities on the tour (Atlanta, Charlotte, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Brooklyn) are among some of the few to welcome Juicy Monkey in both cans and draft, providing something special and limited to nearby consumers. Loaded with notes of fruit juice, 9.5% ABV and ripe for the picking, Juicy Monkey is packin’ a punch as he joins the crew. Upfront pineapple and orange aroma meet Sabro, Lotus, and Sultana hops to drop a Hazy Imperial IPA that will have you on Monkey Time in no time.

“Our Victory Monkeys are accessible and approachable offerings that can bring new consumers into craft who may be intimidated by preconceived notions of what craft beer is ‘meant to’ taste like. If we were asked to define the Victory Monkeys, we’d characterize them as big in personality, big in flavor, and boasting a big 9.5% ABV, all while bringing easy-drinking to a variety of styles. This balance can be hard to strike but the Victory Monkeys deliver time and again and we’re excited to continue extending the Monkey franchise in a thoughtful but creative way to reach all drinkers – not just tradtional beer drinkers.” – Kelly Irvine, Victory Brewing Company Brand Manager

DOWNINGTOWN, PA. – Victory Brewing Company is announcing its 2020 marketing campaign that brings the characters from its Monkey family of beers to life, in hopes of spreading much needed laughter to its fans. The Monkey Family of beers is known for their high quality, and great tasting Belgian styles like Golden Monkey, the #1 Belgian Ale, and Sour Monkey, the #2 Sour Ale in the country.

The Monkey Family of beers are also known for the unique and interesting monkey characters that highlight the brand’s packaging. This year, Golden, Sour, and Twisted are coming to life to showcase their mystical and playful personalities that transcend beyond the world of craft beer. The “monkeys” are here to remind us that quality does not have to be too serious, rather that it should be fun. The characters are designed to tell light-hearted and fun stories about the beers.

“With the intense political environment, social media craze and overwhelming noise within the craft segment, 2020 felt like the perfect time to introduce some much-needed laughter”, says Bill Covaleski, co-founder of Victory Brewing Company. “The Monkeys have an innate light-hearted personality to fuel the fun and encourage drinkers to stop taking life too seriously. At the end of the day, our goal is to create delicious beers that help our customers escape the stress of everyday life and to transport them to a place of content. The Monkeys have earned their right in the craft industry to voice that reminder.”

The Monkeys (@VictoryMonkeys) have joined Instagram and Twitter to share their stories and content. Besides debuting their new social channels, the Monkeys are hosting a regional comedy tour in partnership with fellow Philadelphia native Mekki Leeper. They’re also launching a year-long national consumer sweepstakes, and they’ll be curating digital content throughout the course of the year.

Comedy Tour featuring acclaimed comedian Mekki Leeper

Starting in March 2020, the Victory Monkeys will embark on a 5-city comedy tour featuring Mekki Leeper. Mekki is a comedian from Philadelphia, now living in Los Angeles. His standup has been featured on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Just For Laughs: New Faces, Comedy Central’s Up Next, Comedy Central Stand Up Featuring and he was named a Comedian You Should Know by Vulture. He wrote for the 2017 White House Correspondents Dinner, and Crooked Media’s Lovett or Leave It. He also wrote and directed the digital series Resolutions on Comedy Central. He’s performed at Just for Laughs, Comedy Central’s Clusterfest, Bridgetown Comedy Festival, and headlines clubs around the country.

Victory Self-Guided Brewery Tour

Art Direction, Environmental Design, Icon Design, Copywriting, Illustration, Project Management

In the fall of 2015, Victory Brewing Company opened their state-of-the-art flagship brewery in Parkesburg, Pennsylvania, featuring full-scale production capabilities and a 350-seat restaurant. To showcase the facility’s capabilities and the company’s brewing expertise, we created an engaging and educational self-guided tour experience throughout the facility’s mezzanine hallway.

I spearheaded the project, responsible for design, initial concepting, establishing and managing vendor relationships, overseeing production and final installation, and content wrangling/cat-herding.

Above:  Tour entrance mural featuring custom backlit bottle cap sign.

Above:  Wayfinding color and iconography system.

Above:  Tour section marker chevrons. As a large portion of the tour hallway's lighting comes from skylight tubes, each of the columns is constructed with internal LED backlighting to be used during evening hours.

Left: Self-guided tour wayfinding board. |  Right: The Victory HopSniff. Imagine being immersed nose-first into your favorite IPA, and you’ve got the (delicious) idea of this Wonka-inspired creation. At the touch of a button, air—and sweet, sweet hop aroma—from the brewery’s hop freezer is blown through the opening and into the tour hallway.

Right: Samples of hops in both their whole flower and pelletized forms allow visitors to experience the aroma difference between the two.

Above:  The Fermentation area kicks off with a scale cross-section installation of a fermentation tank, complete with a monitor showing time-lapse footage of beer fermenting and an exterior made from the stainless steel cladding used on the actual tanks outside.

Above: As the brewhouse itself is off-limits on the self-guided tour, I brought its materials (including stainless steel and wood paneling) and colors into the tour hallway for the  Brewhouse section of the tour.

Above: a dimensional diagram walks the viewer through the equipment used and brewing process steps that occur within the brewhouse.

Above: Vinyl banners denote points of interest and extend the tour graphics into the production spaces, creating a cohesive system throughout the facility.
