These forums are organized by rig types and special interests, making it easy to connect and spark up friendships.

Best part? The RV LIFE forums won’t cost you a dime, leaving you with extra cash to splurge on a couple of the premium RV clubs below.

Escapees: A Comprehensive RV Community

Escapees is an RV community that aims to support various aspects of the RV lifestyle. With a range of discounts and support services, it also caters to different types of RVers through sub-groups like Xscapers, which is tailored for those who work while traveling.

Escapees offers educational resources for RVers at all experience levels. This includes in-person training sessions, online courses, and a variety of webinars and blogs. The aim is to help RVers operate their vehicles safely and efficiently.

The community aspect is a significant part of Escapees. Members often describe a sense of belonging and camaraderie that comes from participating in the club’s various events, which range from local gatherings to larger annual events like the Escapade.

On the practical side, members have access to a network of Club-owned and member-operated parks. Additional benefits include discounts at various RV parks and an extensive mail forwarding service. The club also offers roadside assistance and has partnerships for discounted RV tires.

Family Motorcoach Association: A Hub for RV Enthusiasts

The Family Motorcoach Association (FMCA) serves as a vital resource for RV owners. Known for its strong sense of community, FMCA facilitates networking and the exchange of ideas among its members.

One unique feature of FMCA is its “Stoppin’ Spots” program. These are emergency safe havens offered by members for members. Whether you’re in need of a temporary parking spot or require mechanical assistance, this initiative aims to provide a safety net for travelers.

FMCA also organizes RV rallies, which serve as in-person platforms for members to connect, share experiences, and learn from one another. These events often feature workshops, seminars, and social gatherings.

Membership benefits extend beyond community engagement. FMCA provides a range of educational materials on RV living, including a dedicated magazine. Additionally, they offer specialized cell phone plans to ensure you stay connected while on the road.

Specialty RV Clubs: Where Everybody Knows Your Name

If you’re seeking something a bit more “tailor-made,” specialty RV clubs are your go-to. These niche communities have a smaller, cozier member base, which is great for building meaningful connections. However, they might not be as generous on the perks and benefits, unlike their larger counterparts.

Fulltime Families: Your Home on the Open Road

Ever dream of turning the open road into a family affair? Fulltime Families is your jam. It’s not just a social circle; it’s a lifeline for parents and kids who’ve traded suburbia for highways and byways.

One of the highlights is their focus on education. Whether you’re into traditional homeschooling or the more adventurous “roadschooling,” they’ve got your back with resources and tips.

And let’s not forget the community aspect. With a calendar chock-full of family events and specialized groups, you’ll find your tribe in no time.

But it’s not all fun and games; there are practical perks too. Think exclusive discounts on RV essentials, making your nomadic lifestyle a bit easier on the wallet.

Republic of Nomads: Adventure Without the Price Tag

On the rise and easy on the pocket, Republic of Nomads is all about affordable family fun. Centralized Facebook group? Check. Wallet-friendly events? Double-check. And the kicker? Zero membership fees.

Handicapped Travel Club: Making the Road Accessible

If you’re juggling the RV lifestyle with a disability, Handicapped Travel Club is your sanctuary. It’s a tight-knit community offering resources and connections that make the road less daunting.

National African American RVers Association: A Community on Wheels

Looking to connect with fellow African American RV enthusiasts? NAARVA is where it’s at. They’re not just building a community; they’re building a movement.

Rainbow RV Club: Your Road, Your Rules

For LGBTQ RVers, Rainbow RV Club is more than just a club—it’s a celebration. Be yourself, and find others who are doing the same, all while exploring the open road.

RVing Women: Hit the Road, Ladies

For the solo female travelers out there, RVing Women is your ticket to freedom and fun. Think of it as your sisterhood on wheels.

So, there you have it—the lowdown on specialty RV clubs. Whether you’re after something niche or just a place that feels like home, there’s a club out there with your name on it. Do you have a favorite RV club we didn’t mention? Let us know in the comments.

AAA regularly inspects every Approved Auto Repair facility and surveys their customers to ensure ongoing performance. Access to the shop network is easy at AAA.com/AutoRepair.

AIDING MOTORISTS FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS

At the turn of the century when automobiles started replacing horse-drawn buggies, drivers began forming motor clubs. Nine of those clubs joined together to create a national motoring organization and on March 4, 1902, in Chicago, founded the American Automobile Association. Since its inception, AAA has dedicated itself to the ongoing needs of motorists – lobbying for safe and efficient highways, standing up for the legal rights of all travelers, and delivering quality benefits and services to its members, on the road and wherever those roads lead.

AAA IS MUCH MORE THAN A TOW TRUCK SERVICE

Our members count on us when the unexpected occurs on the road, but a AAA membership is much more than roadside assistance and tow truck service. So what does AAA membership include? AAA members have 24/7 mobile and online access to various products, services and information resources to assist them in everyday life, and the added benefit of in-person professional assistance at AAA offices across North America.

Join today and take advantage of all that a AAA membership has to offer. Use it for shopping and dining discounts. Save money on movie tickets and attraction admission. Even get complimentary identity theft protection and access to financial and insurance products. When traveling, get maps, travel guides and passport photos, and enjoy car rental discounts and special member offers on cruises, tours and more booked through AAA preferred partners.

AAA MEMBER SERVICES FOR EVERY MEMBERSHIP PLAN

AAA offers different membership plans so you can choose the one that’s best for you. Americas Road & Travel Club, Inc. Reviews

  • Aug 6, 2014

I purchased Good Sam RV Roadside Assistance for another year just prior to my trip to Utah from Florida ($99.95.) Enroute, I blew a tire (right rear inside) on my motorhome just outside the city of Middle of Nowhere, Wyoming. I contacted Roadside Assist to let them know that I had blown a tire and needed service. The call was routed three times, eventually winding up with a "tire technical expert" who was busy during our call talking to a fellow employee about what she was going to be doing over the weekend (in all fairness, she asked if I could hold a couple of times, and I don't think she knew I could hear her, but that was the conversation going on while I'm twenty minutes into a call to the service center.) Aggravating.

When the tech rep asked if I had a spare, I told her I did, and then made the mistake of mentioning that the spare was not on a rim. She informs me at that time that because the spare is not mounted, there will be a charge of $186.00 prior to sending service out to me. I was flabbergasted. I have had tires changed by AAA before (no such charge,) but arguably have never had the need to use Good Sam before (a two-year member.) I( pointed out that I thought there must be some mistake...a tire shop charges about $4 to $8.00 to put a tire on a rim if you don't buy the tire from them. They might charge $10 if you want it balanced. Please, correct me if I'm off base here...but that is what I have paid within the past 18 months at my local tire shop in Merritt Island, FL.

The tech takes my credit card number, and within two hours the service arrives. The guys with the tire service are great, and knock everything out quickly and professionally. It takes them 7 minutes to pull the bad tire off the rim and install the spare. As they were putting their tools away, I asked what they would have charged me to put the spare on the rim if it had been a service call that I was paying them for directly. They looked at each other and shrugged. One of the tire techs ventured a guess that the boss would have had them charge about $10-15, but he couldn't say for sure. He further stated that it wasn't a big deal...they would have put the tire on the rim for the same price as just switching out a tire that was already mounted if I bought them a six-pack.

After I reached civilization, I pored more carefully through the information that Good Sam had sent me touting their Roadside service. What I found was this (from the brochure:)

A service technician will replace a flat tire with your inflated spare, or we’ll tow your vehicle to the nearest professional service center. On occasion and whenever possible, we will make arrangements for the member to purchase a tire(s) for delivery to the disablement scene. In these cases Good Sam Roadside Assistance will pay for delivery of tire only, member is responsible for all additional costs including cost of tire(s), mounting, balancing, other parts or labor, tax and any other fees. Note: This benefit does not include seasonal tire changes. Member is responsible for all parts and labor.

Although I did not have an inflated spare (my bad,) the charge for mounting was exorbitant (more than 18 times the normal charge of a shop or onsite-tire service.) As a consequence, I have cancelled my membership with Good Sam Roadside Assistance. To their credit, they did (per their advertising,) refund my $99.95 membership fee since I was within the 30-day window from point of purchase. They kept the $186.00. I have since returned to AAA's RV service, and feel all the better for it.

I hope that Good Sam will revisit its pricing policies, although I doubt this will happen. Overcharging your customers is never a good practice, and I am certainly making it a priority to let all my RVing friends know that there is some blatant price gouging going on with this organization.

AMERICA’S OPEN ROADS ARE CALLING. HOW WILL YOU ANSWER?

May 17, 2023 | 5 min read.

Hannah Purnell

In the United States, our claim to fame has always been our thirst for adventure. This country was forged by fearless dreamers who believed anything is possible—as long as you’re willing to go the distance. America’s highways, byways, and back roads are stitched together with that mindset, linking from Alaska’s untouched wilderness all the way to the neon-splashed streets of New York City.

AAA partners with the world’s biggest names in travel to deliver unforgettable experiences by land, sea, and air. But our true passion is helping travelers discover America the way early trailblazers intended: from the driver’s seat.

As a leader in car travel for more than 100 years, AAA is counted on for advice and expertise that goes far beyond what’s Google-able—everything from ASE-certified car maintenance tips to secret, hyperlocal spots for the best dining and shopping.

In creating this guidebook, we relied on extensive AAA travel research, as well as insight from experienced AAA travel professionals and outside experts. As you explore, look for these icons, which contain at-a-glance info to pique your curiosity and boost your confidence as you plan for your next Great American Road Trip.

HIT THE OPEN ROAD: AMERICA’S HIDDEN GEMS

FIND YOUR ROAD TRIP STYLE: IT’S PERSONAL So, you’ve decided to plan a road trip. Terrific choice! Traveling by car is the perfect way to control your itinerary while saving money and spending quality time with the people who matter most. But just like any getaway, the perfect road trip starts with  basic details—the who, what, when, where, and why—of your one-of-a-kind journey.

Car Trips historically make up more than 95% of U.S. travel, and AAA Senior Vice President of Travel Paula Twidale expects that trend to continue. Learn more.

Packing for road trip

ASSEMBLING YOUR PRECIOUS CARGO

Long car rides are a rare chance for deep conversations, full-belly laughs, and incredible experiences that take you beyond your day-to-day routine. For that reason, your first step as voyage captain will be choosing the perfect passengers to share these moments. Will you…

These are all perfect reasons to plan a road trip, and here are some important factors to consider for each group:

  • Age. Older adults, children, and teenagers will all have different energy and enthusiasm levels for, say, an all-day jaunt along Kansas City’s historic museum trails.

Game time on road trips should be fun and collaborative. Check out these 4 Road Trip Games That Don’t Involve Screens at AAA’s blog, The Extra Mile. Learn more.

  • Activity and ability . That 10-mile Appalachian hike might not pose a problem for you, but it could be challenging for someone with a physical imparity or disability.
  • Spending power. Can everyone in your group afford to throw in on gas, lodging, food, and attractions, or will you cover or subsidize those costs?
  • Food and drink preferences. If your group includes non-drinkers or those with severe food allergies, you may need to rethink that decadent New Orleans food and wine tour.
  • Free time . Summer break is of course the most popular travel window for families, but others may have busy summer work schedules that don’t allow for a long getaway.

Enjoying an adventurous trip

CHOOSING A QUICK JAUNT VS. EPIC EXPEDITION

The average U.S. road trip lasts 7 – 10 days, but your ideal journey may be much shorter—or even longer—depending on how much you want to see and do. Here’s a helpful hint: Start at your endpoint and work backwards, asking yourself:

1. What is my ultimate destination? Be as specific as possible here. For example, instead of “California’s Pacific Coast Highway,” you might specify “Paso Robles winery tour.” That way, you can backfill your itinerary with stops at Big Sur, Monterey, and other popular surrounding areas.

California dream on a budget with AAA’s nature-centric sample itineraries for exploring the Pacific Coast Highway, with optional stops in L.A., San Luis Obispo, and more. Learn more.

2. What are my most important stops? Start by listing everything you want to see and do. Then, categorize each item as: must-have (e.g., weddings and other time-sensitive events); nice-to-have (e.g., festivals and multi-night performances); and negotiable (e.g., historical landmarks and other relatively permanent places and fixtures).

Are you open to other modes of transport? Keep in mind, it’s still a road trip, even if parts of your journey aren’t by car. Many travelers opt to expedite portions of their journey based on needs and time constraints. Train ride from point B to C? Still a road trip. Sailing from D to E? The water is your road. Flying home from your final endpoint? Yep, that’s a road trip, too!

Prepping to go on a road trip

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO BOOK IN ADVANCE

Advance planning is critical as your itinerary begins to take shape. Because when it comes to booking hotel rooms, dinner and tour reservations, and must-see concerts and events, the old adage rings truer than ever: The early bird gets the worm.

Gas prices can significantly impact your road trip budget. Check in periodically at gasprices.aaa.com for daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly national averages by zip code.   Learn more.

Here’s how to prioritize advance bookings for your road trip:

Priority #1: Picking the perfect road trip ride. Unless you plan to drive your personal vehicle, ask yourself these important questions before renting a car, SUV, or RV for your unique trip:

Click here to peruse U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Cars for Road Trips.”   Learn more.

Priority #2: Booking unforgettable accommodations. After a long day of driving, you may be tempted to crash on the first available pillow. And while there’s nothing wrong staying at your reliable go-to chain, it’s worth exploring these ultra-memorable overnight options.

  • Not-So-Humdrum Hotels . Choose from hundreds of offerings that range from quirky to downright peculiar. Find 70s-esque shag carpet, underwater rooms, snowy lodges, and heliport check-in options on Thrillist’s list of “ Coolest Hotels in Every U.S. State .”
  • Down-low Locales . No matter how popular a place gets, there will always be fairy-tale inns, secluded beach resorts, and hidden campgrounds that only the locals know about. Start your hidden-gem search with this roundup of “ Best Hidden Vacation Spots .”
  • Stargazing Sleepers . Traveling Lifestyle’s list of “ Top Outdoor U.S. Destinations  ” features Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort, a family-friendly riverside fun factory that puts a nostalgic spin on eco-tourism. We can almost smell the campfire s’mores!

Ready for a budget-friendly break from the road? Many of AAA’s 12 Coolest Campgrounds for Families offer rental bikes, mini-golf, and more for kids of all ages.” Learn more.

Priority #3 : Accessing pre-sale and sold-out tickets. What your road trip crew really craves are experiences—a chance to try something new, laugh out loud, and make lasting memories in the process. Here are three ways you can make that road trip magic happen with tickets from AAA:

Take a Silver Screen break with advance-purchase tickets for new releases at local and regional movie theaters nationwide.

Throw your hands in the air (because you really, really care) with tickets to must-see concerts, sporting events, and onstage performances.

Make memories to last a lifetime by surprising your crew with discounted tickets to world-class theme parks, museums, and other attractions.

The experts at AAA recommend Denver, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles still dominate road trip destinations, based on expert data from TripTik.AAA.com. Learn more.

Comfort on a road trip

PREP LIKE A PRO: MAX CAR COMFORT + SAFETY You’ve plotted your course, assembled your dream team, and booked all the necessary stays and events. Now it’s time to prepare your vehicle and crew for a seamless and safe trip from point A to point B, as you enjoy all the best of what’s in between.

ASE-CERTIFIED MECHANIC CAR MAINTENANCE TIPS

These four simple tips from ASE-certified master technicians will ensure you and your vehicle are up for any challenge the road may have in store.

Tip 1 : Start by checking under the hood . Before you hit the road, have a trusted mechanic check your engine compartment, tires, battery, belts, hoses, wipers, and fluids to make sure everything’s in tip-top shape and there are no pre-existing issues to interrupt your journey.

Schedule a pre-trip checkup at any of 7,000+ AAA Approved Auto Repair Facilities nationwide. Learn more.

Tip 2 : Maintain visibility before your trip and throughout your journey :

Keep clutter off front and rear dash, passenger seat, and other lines of sight.

Test headlamps, brake lights, turn signals, and all other interior/exterior lighting.

Keep prescription lenses on your face or in a case where you can easily reach them.

Tip 3: Don’t leave home without car safety essentials . Stash these items in your trunk, in case of unexpected road conditions, flat tires, and other car emergencies:

  • Spare tire kit
  • Tire gauge and small pump
  • Jumper cables
  • Blankets, gloves, and warm clothing
  • First-aid kit
  • Road flares
  • Ice scraper/brush
  • Tire shovel and sand or kitty litter (for digging out of snow or mud)

It also never hurts to keep a small amount of food and water in the event you become stuck and need to wait for assistance.

Tip 4: Give your tires extra TLC. Long-distance driving depletes tire pressure, which can exacerbate wear and tear and lead to poor overall vehicle performance. Have tires rotated before your trip, and check pressure visually or with a gauge should you notice performance issues.

At AAA recommend 32 – 35 PSI for most standard tires. Find exact specs in the car’s manual or interior driver’s door sticker. Click here for more tire pressure info. Learn more.

Planning Ahead : Up first (for good reason!) is AAA’s TripTik Travel Planner . Point-to-point precision made TripTik a household name, but its constantly evolving lead-gen interface makes it the go-to tool for finding everything from cheap fuel to quirky roadside attractions.

Fueling Up : The GasBuddy fuel-finding app crowdsources data to save drivers money at the pump, while the PlugShare  charging station finder gets five stars for reliability from EV drivers.

El Capitan Yosemite California

There’s something about feeling the breeze on your neck at an MLB game, paddling down a river corridor, or watching hawks high atop the tree line on a humid afternoon. It’s all part of our signature American need to be outside, and you can find it at iconic sports arenas, breathtaking national parks, and in millions of lesser-known outdoor places all across the U.S.

Just Outside the In-Crowd

Lone bison against the grand teton range

Up Close & Personal in Yellowstone

No road trip to-do list would be complete without wildlife spotting at iconic U.S. National Parks. Yellowstone, for just one example in this roundup from World Animal Protection , offers the largest concentration of mammals in the lower 48 states. If sitting on a soothing hot-springs perch while watching bison and river otters play strikes your fancy, this is the detour for you.

Must-See American Ballparks

The U.S. Midwest is baseball country, and with schedules heating up just in time for summer road trips, the seven stadiums highlighted in Itinerant Fan’s guide to ballpark road trip planning should top every fan’s list. Just to up the ante, here’s a fun fact for each:

Downtown eating outside

FOODIE PARADISE ON A BUDGET

America is known as a Melting Pot of cultures, ethnicities, languages, and customs that intertwine to create some of the world’s most innovative cuisine. But what makes our food unique is its accessibility. The best American dishes are infused with down-home comfort that lets visitors taste the essence of a place—without breaking the bank.

Food & a Whole Lot More

Drive-thru chains aren’t the only way—and far from the best way—to grab a cheap bite on the go. When the first tummy starts rumbling, skip the golden arches in favor of one of these far more satisfying American dining destinations.

Landmark Restaurants. Not to be confused with any run-of-the-mill tourist trap, places like Wall Drug near Mount Rushmore in South Dakota host millions of visitors each year. Families flock to places like these for affordable dining, as well as kid-friendly activities, unique gifts, and helpful visitor info. Pro tip: Leave room for Wall Drug’s impossibly fresh homemade donuts.

Low-Key Delish BBQ Joints. Part truck stop, part butcher shop, part café, the Neon Pig in Memphis pays homage to all things southern barbecue. This unassuming spot won Thrillist’s “2015 Best Burger In the Nation” and has been climbing national foodie indices ever since. Pro tip: Order the “Smash Burger,” a combination of locally sourced aged filet, sirloin, ribeye, and bacon cured in house.

Colourful shops and cafés on South Congress Street in Austin Texas

Food trucks are as American as apple pie, as exemplified by our four favorite Western cities serving up the most innovative concoctions on four wheels:

Austin, Texas . It’s been said that Austin isn’t just home base for food trucks—this city serves up entire food truck courts. For the uninitiated, we recommend sampling from the local cuisine with classic Texas BBQ and tacos first. Then, sit and people watch before moving on to course #2.

Los Angeles, California. L.A.’s year-round sunshine makes it an outdoor eating nirvana, with a vast array of food trucks serving every culinary style and preference. If you’re feeling intimidated, start with the ever-growing number of celebrity chefs who have gotten into the L.A. food truck scene. You might even get a reality show cameo out of it!

Portland, Oregon . If it’s an Instagram food trend, you’ll find it in Portland, whose vibrant food truck—or as the locals call them, “food carts”—scene is second to none. The predominant focus is on fresh, vegan, and gluten-free fare, so you can’t go wrong starting with Mediterranean and Thai, then working your way to Latin sections.

Seattle, Washington . Seattle’s food truck scene is an all-hands affair—even local legislators are working behind the scenes to make it successful, so you know it’s legit. Take a cue from the locals and sample authentic, bite-sized cuisine that hails from Spain, Guatemala, the Caribbean, and other international points. You’ll find myriad options to satisfy the most specific dietary restrictions and personal preferences.

Street food

USA STREET FOOD GLOWS UP

The Philly Cheesesteak is one great example of American street food that deftly blends history, culture, and pride of place, in a convenient mouthful. Here are just a few other region-specific street food creations to sample along your road trip route:

Tijuana Dog. Where hot dog, sausage, bacon, and heaps of cheese meet on a toasted bun topped with cool chives and kicky hot sauce.

Wisconsin Kringle. The state’s official pastry, featuring flaky butter crust filled with fruit and nuts and covered in sweet icing.

Mission Tacos . From the San Francisco neighborhood of the same name, filled with Latin-spiced carne asada and served with fresh lime and radish slices.

New England Clam Cake . A deep-fried combination of chopped clams, puffy flour-based batter, fried a golden crispy brown, and paired with clam chowder for dipping.

Read on for more of the “ 50 Most Popular American Street Foods ” from Taste Atlas.

Summertime road trip at the beach

SUMMER CELEBRATIONS OF HISTORY + CULTURE Each year across America’s cities and small towns, millions of people observe cultural holidays and important celebrations with community festivals, special museum and art exhibits, and heritage site tours.

Many host ongoing events and tours to highlight the history and contributions of African Americans. In this article, Travel + Leisure details a self-guided tour from Atlanta to Little Rock that begins at the birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr., as well as a journey through California’s wine country, with premier Black-owned vineyards and restaurants showcased along the way.

If your ideal road trip is about discovering new cultures and places, this section will introduce you to summertime opportunities that enrich the cultural experience through food, music, art, and shared history.

The Breakfast Club has been a locally-owned Moscow breakfast staple for 12 years. The food is delicious, and the portions are appropriate (not gigantic). They have stuffed biscuits and gravy which is biscuits cut in half with eggs and bacon in the middle, covered in in-house made sausage gravy. Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge? What to know about collapsed Baltimore bridge

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge , a major transportation link in the Baltimore area, sparked a massive search and rescue effort early Tuesday morning.

The bridge has been a critical transportation passageway along the East Coast for decades. Video captured the collapse , after Singapore-flagged container ship, the Dali, collided with one of the bridge's pillars.

The ship had caught fire, and several vehicles fell into the river below.

Here's what to know about the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Follow here for live updates → Baltimore's Key Bridge collapses after ship collision; rescue effort underway

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge located?

The bridge crosses over the Patapsco River on I-695 and is the final link on the Baltimore Beltway, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority .

It is the outermost of the three tollways that cross Baltimore's Harbor.

How long is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The 4-lane bridge structure alone is 1.6 miles long. The facility also includes the Curtis Creek Drawbridge. Including approach roadways, the entire stretch is around 10.9 miles long, MDTA said.

Why did a ship hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The ship, a container vessel chartered by Maersk, apparently lost power a few minutes before striking the bridge, a senior U.S. official told USA TODAY .

No Maersk crew or personnel were onboard the vessel when it struck the bridge, according to a statement from the company. It was operated by a charter company, Synergy Group, and owned by Grace Ocean Pte., based in Singapore, and ultimately bound for Sri Lanka.

Accidents like this, called Marine casualties, are not uncommon, the official told USA TODAY, with an allision (an immobile object being struck by a ship) occurring about every 10 years or so. Investigators will likely look into the cause of the power outage and whether there was a mechanical failure on the ship.

How old is the Key Bridge in Baltimore?

The Francis Scott Key Bridge opened in March 1977, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority .

What type of bridge is the Francis Scott Key?

The steel-arched bridge was the second-longest continuous-truss bridge span in the world when it was built and remains the second longest in the United States and third in the world,  according to the American Civil Engineering Society .

When was the Francis Scott Key Bridge built?

Construction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge began in 1972.

Francis Scott Key Bridge has a deep history

According to the MDTA, the bridge crosses over the Patapsco River, near where Francis Scott Key, the bridge's namesake, was inspired to write the lyrics of the Star Spangled Banner.

Key is believed to have witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry on the night of Sept. 12, 1814, within 100 yards of the modern-day bridge. That battle is what inspired him to the national anthem.

How vital is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The bridge is critical to East Coast shipping. The port’s private and public terminals handled 847,158 autos and light trucks in 2023, the most of any U.S. port. The port also handles farm and construction machinery, sugar, gypsum and coal, according to a Maryland government website.

The latest on the Baltimore Key Bridge collapse

By Kathleen Magramo , Antoinette Radford, Alisha Ebrahimji and Maureen Chowdhury , CNN

Maryland governor calls for full accountability in bridge collapse

From CNN’s Sabrina Souza

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore called for "a full and thorough investigation" of the Francis Key Scott Bridge collapse.

Divers working on recovery efforts have been operating under "pitch-dark conditions, frigid temperatures, in high tides, high winds, with mangled metal all around them ... looking and still searching for these individuals," he said Wednesday.

Moore added investigators do not yet know what caused the ship to lose power.

"There needs to be accountability to make sure these things do not happen again and that we have a system in place to make sure they don’t," he said.

Moore also said he spoke to families of those presumed lost and "prayed with them, prayed for them." He said that he promised the families that he would "exhaust all options to be able to bring them a sense of closure and that includes these heroic divers."

Maryland governor says there's no timeline for when channel will reopen as he stresses economic impact of port

From CNN's Maureen Chowdhury

Maryland Governor Wes Moore, center, addresses a press conference at the scene of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 26.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore told CNN on Wednesday that there currently is no specific timeline for when ships may be able to move in and out of the channel into the Port of Baltimore after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge — but that it is a priority.

The bridge collapse is currently blocking a key channel into the busy port and impacting thousands of workers. Moore said that approximately 15,000 workers are directly impacted and about 140,000 workers are indirectly impacted.

"The Port of Baltimore has such a significant economic impact not just on on my state, not just on the state of Maryland, but we're talking about 51 million tons of foreign cargo. That's the largest, we're the largest port in the country for foreign cargo," Moore said.

Moore also noted that Baltimore is a top 10 port overall for the country. He said there are people who will be impacted all over the country as the port remains closed, from the farmer a Kentucky to an auto dealer in Michigan.

Pressed again on when ships will be able to move in and out of the port, Moore responded, "We're prioritizing and focusing on how we (are) coordinating efforts. I mean, it's the reason that, that I've been on the ground marshaling the resources and marshaling and the efforts and and why we're going to stay here, to be able to make sure that we can get this thing open and get things going again."

State of Emergency remains in place for Baltimore, mayor says

From CNN’s Chris Boyette

A U.S. Coast Guard vessel sails near the Francis Scott Key Bridge, after the Dali cargo vessel crashed into it causing it to collapse, in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 27.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said the city remains in a state of emergency as recovery efforts continue for the six presumed dead a day after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed.

“There's still a state of emergency. We will have that for the foreseeable future," Scott told CNN’s John Berman Wednesday. "This is an unthinkable tragedy that impacts our city and our community and our state in so many different and ways," he said.

The mayor declared a state of emergency in the city Tuesday after a 984-foot cargo ship hit a pillar of the Key Bridge, causing it to collapse.

Authorities announced Tuesday afternoon that efforts had shifted from a search and rescue operation to a recovery operation. The mayor also acknowledged the work ahead to reopen the Port of Baltimore, a major hub for vehicles, containers and commodities which has suspended vessel traffic was suspended until further notice following the bridge collapse.

But, he said, his concentration remains on the recovery efforts. “We're all, right now, still focused on recovery. That's what we're talking about today — recovering those who we lost,” he said.

Divers are dealing with a "treacherous situation" as they continue recovery efforts, Maryland governor says

From CNN’S Sabrina Souza

Emergency vehicles are parked near the scene of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 27.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore says divers are dealing with a “treacherous situation” as they continue search and recovery efforts for six unaccounted people in the Francis Key Scott Bridge collapse, he told CBS News Wednesday morning.

“We’re talking about frigid temperatures, we’re talking about a moving tide, we’re talking about darkness and mangled metal, that’s still very much in the middle of this water,” Moore said describing the conditions divers are up against. “The heroism of our first responders was just outstanding,” Moore said on CBS.

Moore spoke to families of missing construction workers saying “these were fathers, and these were sons, and these were husbands, and these were people who their families relied on and so we let them know the state would be there for them,” he told CBS.

The governor pledged his commitment to the families in search and recovery efforts, saying he's confident officials are only looking for six unaccounted for individuals.

Moore stressed the economic impact the collapse will have, saying the port indirectly employs over 100,000 people and imports 51 million tons of foreign cargo, more cars, trucks, agricultural equipment than any other port in this country, he said.

Divers resume recovery effort for 6 victims, Baltimore mayor says

From CNN's Alisha Ebrahimji

Rescue efforts are still focused on finding six people who were on the Francis Scott Key Bridge during its collapse Tuesday, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott told CNN.

Just before talking with CNN, Scott received an update that divers were setting out to resume their search efforts in the water, he said.

"That work is already dangerous, but will be even more so today," Scott said. "With the expected rain, the choppy waters and we all know about the debris and other things that they'll be dealing with." "We also have to live those first responders up who are putting their own lives at risk to be able to bring home those who we lost to have some sort of closure for those families."

Transportation Sec. Buttigieg says investigations are ongoing into responsibility for bridge crash

From CNN's Antoinette Radford

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, center, speaks during a news conference near the scene where a container ship collided with a support on the Francis Scott Key Bridge, Baltimore, on March 26.

US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg says if private companies are responsible for the Francis Scott Key Bridge cargo ship crash, they will be held responsible.

“To be clear: if any private party is responsible and accountable for this, then they will be held accountable," he told CNN. “But we can’t wait for that to play out to get to work right now,” he said.

Buttigieg predicted a “long road to recovery” for the Francis Scott Key Bridge and the Port of Baltimore, telling CNN Wednesday that getting the bridge back up and the port reopen will be a priority for the Biden administration.

When asked if he had any idea when the Patapsco River channel might reopen, Buttigieg said he did not have an estimated time, but was working with relevant authorities, including the US Coast Guard, to get it open as soon as possible. He noted that the conditions of the remaining pier will also impact that timeline.

“Not only do we need to get those ships in, there are some ships that are already in there that can’t get out. So, it’s very important to get that channel open," he said.

Buttigieg also warned of disruptions to supply chains in the near-term: “The impact of this incident is going to be felt throughout the region and really throughout our supply chains. We're talking about the biggest vehicle-handling port in the country that is now out of commission until that channel can be cleared — and a bridge that took five years to build.”

Interviews with ship crew members will begin today, NTSB chair says

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy told CNN this morning that interviews with crew members will begin later today.

"With respect to those on the vessel, we will also interview fire and rescue and and people that were on the bridge as well," she said.

NTSB chair says investigators boarded Dali ship overnight and recovered its data recorder

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy speaks during a news conference on the Francis Scott Key Bridge incident, on March 26.

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy told CNN that investigators were able to board the Dali ship overnight.

“Some investigators boarded late last night to look at the engine room, the bridge and gather any sort of electronics or documentation," Homendy said on CNN News Central Wednesday morning.

“Right now, we do have the data record, which is essentially the ‘black box,’” Homendy added. “We’ve sent that back to our lab to evaluate and begin to develop a timeline of events that led up to the strike on the bridge.” She added that investigators should have information from the vessel's black box later today.

Homendy said that a team of 24 investigators will be returning to the ship this morning, with a focus on collecting the perishable evidence, including pictures of the vessel.

CNN’s Andy Rose contributed reporting to this post.

Port of Baltimore will remain in operation despite Key Bridge collapse, city council member says

Aerial view of the a container yard at the Port of Baltimore, Maryland, on March 26.

Councilman for Baltimore's fourth district, Mark Conway, said the Port of Baltimore will continue to operate despite the Key Bridge collapse.

Speaking to CNN, Conway said ships will still be able to move through the port, but larger cargo items will have to wait until the bridge debris is cleared.

"The port will still be operating to my understanding, folks will be able to come in and out of the port, but cargo will not be able to make it through the port until we are able to clear the bridge and the area," he said.

"And there's still at this point, no telling how long that may take," he said.
