When is Saudi International? TV channel, live stream, tee times including Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau

asian tour tee times

The controversial Saudi International might be an Asian Tour event but it is no ordinary Asian Tour field, with some of the world’s best players in attendance this week.

Both the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour reluctantly granted permission for players to compete in the event, which is sponsored by the Saudi public investment fund, though they expect future commitments in return.

The huge appearances fees have attracted a star-studded field, with Dustin Johnson , Bryson DeChambeau and Xander Schauffele among those arriving from the US, while Tommy Fleetwood , Tyrrell Hatton and Sergio Garcia lead the European contingent.

Two-time major winner Greg Norman is the face of Saudi investment in the Asian Tour and has promised there is more to come as he looks to threaten the dominance of the established bodies.

“In the beginning, we have to get off with baby steps, understand where we need to go and how we’re going to need to do it,” Norman said.

“This is just the infancy of this journey, and it’s really going to be an exciting journey.”

What comes next for the Asian Tour, and whether it can tempt players away from the PGA Tour and DP World Tour longer-term, remains to be seen, but for now the focus in on the Saudi International this week, taking place in King Abdullah Economic City.

How to watch Saudi International?

The first round of the Saudi International gets underway early on Thursday, February 3, before the winner lifts the trophy after Sunday’s final round in the early afternoon UK time.

TV channel: Golf fans in the UK will be able to watch the tournament on FreeSports, though there is only limited coverage.

It’s scheduled to be shown live 8am-10am GMT on Thursday and Friday, before more extensive live coverage from 8:30am-1pm GMT over the weekend.

With LIV Golf off until next week’s event in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, many of the league’s members are entered into this week’s International Series event on the Asian Tour.

In total, 21 LIV members are teeing it up beginning Thursday at Al Mouj Golf in Muscat, Oman, including three still ranked in the top 100 of the Official World Golf Ranking – No. 80 Lucas Herbert, No. 81 Joaquin Niemann and No. 95 Dean Burmester.

With LIV still not able to award world-ranking points, playing in the International Series remains one of few avenues for LIV players to boost their world ranks and potentially earn spots in major championships. The Masters and The Open award exemptions to the top 50 players in the OWGR – Masters the week preceding and The Open several weeks before. The U.S. Open invites the world’s top 60 a few weeks prior to the championship. The PGA Championship traditionally reserves spots for the top 100.

No. 137 Louis Oosthuizen, No. 141 David Puig (last week’s Asian Tour winner), No. 154 Mito Pereira and No. 165 Abraham Ancer are also entered in the Oman field, which also includes these LIV members all ranked outside the top 300 in the OWGR: Charles Schwartzel, Kieran Vincent, Jinichiro Kozuma, Matt Jones, Eugenio Chacarra, Scott Vincent, Anirban Lahiri, Matthew Wolff, Branden Grace, Carlos Ortiz, Sebastian Munoz, Peter Uihlein, Hudson Swafford and Danny Lee.

21 Aussies among stacked Asian Tour Q School finale

asian tour tee times

A field of 234 players boasting multiple PGA TOUR and DP World Tour winners will include 21 Aussies when Final Stage of Asian Tour Qualifying School tees off in Thailand on Wednesday.

A total of 35 countries – including Kiwis Denzel Ieremia, Nick Voke, Kevin Chun and James Hydes – will be represented across a 90-hole five-round marathon at Lake View Resort and Golf Club in Hua Hin for the opportunity to secure one of 35 tour cards for the 2023 season.

Twelve of the Australian contingent have played their way into Final Stage via Sectional Qualifying while nine others were exempt through the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit, the Asian Development Tour Order of Merit and past champion status.

Headlining the international presence is seven-time DP World Tour winner Alvaro Quiros, two-time PGA TOUR winners Sangmoon Bae and Matt Every and veteran PGA TOUR player Steve Marino.

There are tournament winners throughout the Aussie contingent also.

Brett Rumford has won six times on the DP World Tour, Sam Brazel won the 2016 Hong Kong Open, David Gleeson is a three-time Asian Tour winner and Deyen Lawson, Dimitrios Papadatos, Tom Power Horan, Jack Thompson, Aaron Pike, Aaron Wilkin and Austin Bautista have all won on the PGA Tour of Australasia in the past 18 months.

Final Stage also represents an important moment in the careers of young players relatively new to the professional ranks.

West Australian pair Hayden Hopewell and Connor McKinney turned professional prior to the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship in December while the likes of Louis Dobbelaar, Jack Thompson, Aaron Wilkin, Charlie Dann, Austin Bautista and Doug Klein are seeking to establish status on an international tour.

Close House to host Asian Tour’s International Series England this August

Close House’s Colt Course chosen for fifth event on The International Series 2023

Close House will host this year’s International Series England with some of the world’s leading players expected to tee it up in the North East this summer.

The $2million tournament will be played August 17-20 and will be the fifth stop on The International Series in 2023.

The International Series England made its debut last summer, at Slaley Hall, and was a landmark event for the International Series and Asian Tour as it marked the first time the tour had staged an event in the United Kingdom.

Close House managing director Jonathan Lupton said: “Welcoming The International Series back to Northumberland for a second consecutive year is an exciting development.

“Having had the pleasure to visit the International Series Oman in February, it was fantastic to see the growth of the Series over the last year and we’re looking forward to working closely with the Asian Tour to create a memorable event in England.”

The Scott Macpherson-designed Lee Westwood Colt Course will be used for the tournament. The par 71 layout measures just under 7,000 yards, and incorporates historical features throughout, including ha-ha walls and ancient woodland.

“I am sure that the players will relish the challenge of the Lee Westwood Colt Course along with enjoying a very warm welcome from the members and guests,” said Close House owner, Sir Graham Wylie.

“The people of the North-East are extremely passionate about sport and to host another world-class event in the region is a huge honour.”

The International Series was launched last year through a historic investment by LIV Golf that created a premier level of events to develop the next generation of stars and offer unprecedented pathways to top competition in the LIV Golf League. The ground-breaking initiative sits with the Asian Tour schedule and saw seven International Series events staged last season across seven countries in three continents.

“The Asian Tour is excited to be returning to Newcastle for the International Series England. We enjoyed a very successful event there last June, which marked the Tour’s first trip to the United Kingdom,” said Cho Minn Thant, commissioner & CEO of the Asian Tour.

“To be able to stage the tournament this year at Close House, a fantastic venue that has such strong ties with Lee Westwood – a nine-time winner on the Asian Tour – adds an exciting new dimension to the tournament and provides another great opportunity for our membership.”

“We thank Close House for making this possible and look forward to another trip to the North of England, which, as we learned in 2022, is an incredible region for golf.”

A strong field will once again make the trip to Newcastle hoping to emulate Scott Vincent’s win which was the start of a brilliant season for the Zimbabwean that culminated in him winning the International Series Order of Merit and a place in the LIV Golf League in 2023.

Asian Tour follows LIV's lead, allows golfers to wear shorts during tournament rounds

The LIV golfers competing in this week's Saudi International should feel right at home after the Asian Tour relaxed a longstanding rule about long pants.

Starting this week, Asian Tour players are allowed to wear shorts during tournament rounds. And it's a move that was directly affected by LIV Golf's decision to do the same last September.

RELATED: Should pro golfers be allowed to wear shorts? Our editors debate

"We just started it this week," Asian Tour CEO Cho Minn Thant told Golf Digest Middle East on Friday. "It is a new rule that has come about through our new TPC, which is selected every two years, and the current one just said: ‘Look, we are playing in destinations where it is very warm.’ They have taken a look at the LIV players last year and how it looks on TV and they were OK with it."

Pants are still required on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, although shorts have been allowed in practice rounds for several years. PGA Tour caddies have been allowed to wear shorts since 1999.

The DP World Tour allowed players to wear shorts at the 2019 Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa due to extreme heat. On the other hand, the LPGA has allowed players to wear shorts—and skirts–for decades.

“Obviously there is the debate about: ‘Do shorts make us look less professional?’" Cho added. "But in a climate like tropical South East Asia, destinations in the Middle East, it just makes sense."

Not surprisingly, Phil Mickelson, making his 2023 debut , was one of those players taking advantage of the rule change during the first two rounds in Saudi Arabia. This on the heels of a Saturday tweet from the man who loves showing off his calves mocking the PGA Tour for not allowing shorts, but allowing joggers.

Mickelson is part of a large LIV Golf contingent at this week's event on the Asian Tour, which has a partnership with the Saudi-backed league. However, golf fans won't see the six-time major champ in shorts, pants, or joggers this weekend after he missed the cut on Friday.
