Enjoy the delights of the gentle way of life of Martha's Vineyard

Enjoy the delights of the gentle way of life of Martha's Vineyard

Less well-known than its neighbour Cape Cod , the island of Martha’s Vineyard – or simply the Vineyard – is one of the pearls of New England . A favourite holiday destination of American presidents, who've been attracted by its tranquil calmness and mild oceanic climate since the 1960s, the island is also home to picturesque architectural treasures, ranging from the white houses of Edgartown to the toothed roofs of the colourful residences of the former Methodist community of Oak Bluffs – a charming "gingerbread village" like something straight out of Hansel and Gretel .

Strolling and wandering the old town of New Orleans

Strolling and wandering the old town of New Orleans

Founded ex nihilo in 1718, New Orleans stands at the heart of the Louisiana bayou between the banks of the Mississippi and the shores of Lake Pontchartrain. Sometimes languid, sometimes frenetic, but always festive and full of life, The Big Easy , as it's also known, is one of the most fascinating cities in the United States. Both the cradle of jazz and blues and the birthplace of Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet, the city positively gleams with its cosmopolitan identity. From the French Quarter – the courtyards, fountains, gardens and wrought iron balconies of which bear witness to a rich colonial past – to the streets of the traditionally authentic and Bohemian neighbourhood of Faubourg Marigny, an enchanting melting pot of European, Native American, African, Creole and Cajun influences come together, granting New Orleans a wonderfully endearing soul.

Explore Everglades National Park in southern Miami

Explore Everglades National Park in southern Miami

Six thousand square kilometres of wet meadows and marshes populated with cypress, mangrove and pine: Everglades National Park , at the southern tip of Florida, makes up the largest natural subtropical habitat on the North American continent. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park extends like a long river of grass flowing out to the sea from inland. This is one of the richest – and most fragile – ecosystems in the world, providing an important refuge for several hundred species of birds, mammals, fish and reptiles. Included amongst these are 36 endangered species, such as the Florida panther , the American crocodile and the West Indian manatee .

Immerse yourself in the cultural and artistic melting pot of the streets of Miami

Immerse yourself in the cultural and artistic melting pot of the streets of Miami

Sitting at the crossroads of the Americas and the Caribbean , between the national parks of the Everglades and Biscayne, Miami stands out as the very symbol of a multicultural Florida. It goes without saying that Miami is, of course, the endless sands of Miami Beach , dotted with those iconic lifeguard towers and washed by the turquoise waters of the Atlantic. But Miami is also the warm, friendly atmosphere of Little Havana and the high-class luxury of Coconut Grove . There are the Art Deco wonders of the South Beach neighbourhood, with its pastel-coloured apartment blocks and whimsical architecture. And then there are the immense murals of the Wynwood Art District, a global Mecca for street art . Multifaceted, diverse and highly colourful, Miami stands out as one of the most creative cities of the US East Coast.

Useful tips

Americans are not in the habit of kissing as a form of saying hello or goodbye. Opt instead for a handshake, or if greeting friends, a hug and a gentle pat on the back.

Essential phrases

Although English is mostly spoken (with a strong accent), some Maori words and expressions slip into everyday phrases. Here are some.

Hello / Good evening: Kia ora Goodbye, see you soon: Ka kite ano Welcome: Haere mai How are you?: Kei te pehea koe? (address to a person) My name is...

Quirky facts and insights

Key West , lying 200 kilometres from the continental mainland at the extreme tip of the Florida Keys archipelago, is the most southern point of the United States (excluding Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean). The island is in fact closer to Cuba, and the inhabitants of Key West have no hesitation in marking themselves out as different from their American compatriots. In 1982, as an act of protest against a road blockade set up by the US authorities, they declared their independence by creating a micronation named the Conch Republic .

Food & gastronomy

In Florida, fish and seafood , particularly crabs and oysters, are especially popular. Alligator meat (farmed), a somewhat more unusual and exotic option, is also widely available. Cuban and Puerto Rican cuisine , imported by the region's sizeable communities of people with a background in these countries, also form part of the local culinary landscape. One particularly notable speciality is the Cuban sandwich: ham, grilled pork and melted cheese on soft white bread.

Myths and legends

Maori has a rich mythology. Of all the legends told, the creation story is one of the best-known. In the beginning there was Rangi-nui (the Sky), who joined together with Papa-tuanuku (the Earth). Their constant embrace plunged the world into darkness. Fed up with the lack of light, their children decided to separate them. Pushing with all his might, Tane-mahuta (the guardian of the forest and the birds) managed to part them. In doing so, he injured his mother. Blood poured onto the Earth for the first time, dyeing New Zealand's soil red. This is why all Maori sites are ochre. Sad to no longer be alongside his wife, the Sky began to cry and rain fell for the first time, filling up the oceans.

In the spotlight

Kiwi birds are so symbolic of New Zealand that New Zealanders are called "kiwis". These birds are one of the species on the island that are especially endangered. Being unable to fly, kiwi populations have decreased sharply in recent years. The government has launched a plan to increase their numbers from 70,000 to 100,000 by 2030. Measures include extending the protected areas where they live, managing predators better and furthering knowledge about the five kiwi species.

Books. Florida , by Jean Dytar, tells the story of a little-known episode in the history of colonisation. Written in the form of a graphic novel, it deals with the tragic fate of a group of French colonists, the Huguenots, who set out for Florida at the end of the 16th century with the aim of conquering the New World. Very few of them would survive the tropical climate and the famine they encountered. Amongst the few who did survive this expedition was the cartographer Jacques le Moynes, who opted to set up home in England with his wife and two children instead – a decision that enabled him to escape the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre but not the vague colonialist desires of the nations of Europe.

Music. Music is an integral part of the cultural landscape of Florida. The existing Afro-American heritage was added to in the 1960s by Latin music imported by Cubans and Haitians: salsa, bachata, merengue, zouk, calypso… Disco then enjoyed a wave of popularity in Miami in the 1970s, followed later by hip hop.

Film. In The Departed (2006), Martin Scorsese used the streets of the Charlestown and Chinatown neighbourhoods of Boston as the setting for a drama in which the police and the mob play a dangerous double game. Starring Leonardo Di Caprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg, this great film brought together a stellar cast.

The Vibrant Charm of New England Ports

New England, with its tapestry of history, culture, and raw natural beauty, has always been a beacon for travelers. But for cruisers?

Oh, it’s like a siren song that beckons with its unique blend of the old-world charm and pristine landscapes.

Let’s sail into two of its most iconic ports, featured as some of the top cities to visit on the East Coast , and discover what they have in store!

Boston, Massachusetts

Ah, Boston! The Cradle of Liberty and one of America’s oldest cities. But don’t let its age fool you. This city is as lively as ever!

  • Historical Significance and Landmarks: Strolling through the cobblestone streets of Boston is like taking a step back in time. The Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile-long route, will guide you through 16 historically significant sites. From the Paul Revere House to the Old North Church, it’s a crash course in American history, minus the school desk.
  • Culinary Delights and Recommendations: A visit to Boston wouldn’t be complete without savoring its culinary offerings. And if you’re thinking seafood, you’re spot on! The Quincy Market is perfect for a quick clam chowder fix. For the more adventurous foodies, Union Oyster House, America’s oldest continuously operating restaurant, offers a seafood experience like no other. And of course, don’t forget to treat yourself to a classic Boston Cream Pie!

Bar Harbor, Maine

Nestled on the northeast shores of Mount Desert Island, Bar Harbor is a haven for nature lovers and food enthusiasts alike.

  • Natural Attractions like Acadia National Park: Just a stone’s throw away from the port, Acadia National Park offers cruisers a chance to experience Maine’s wilderness up close. Whether you’re up for a scenic drive along Park Loop Road or a short hike to capture panoramic ocean views, Acadia is pure, unadulterated nature at its best.
  • Local Delicacies, such as Lobsters: And now, for the pièce de résistance—Maine lobsters! Bar Harbor offers numerous quaint eateries where you can sink your teeth into fresh, buttery lobster rolls. And if you’re up for a little adventure, some local spots even let you choose your own lobster from a saltwater tank. Talk about fresh!

From the hustle and bustle of Boston to the tranquil settings of Bar Harbor, New England’s ports are the perfect starting point for our East Coast cruise adventure.

But hold tight, as we’re just getting started! Next up, the magnetic allure of the Mid-Atlantic awaits…

The Mid-Atlantic Wonders

As we continue our voyage southward, the East Coast’s vibrant spirit remains unwavering, but the flavor evolves.

The Mid-Atlantic boasts a seamless blend of rich history, urban charm, and seaside allure. Let’s anchor at three key ports that exemplify this beautiful meld.

New York City, New York

The city that never sleeps! The skyline of NYC, with its towering skyscrapers, serves as an iconic backdrop for any cruise ship.

  • Iconic Landmarks for Cruisers: You might be on a tight schedule, but spots like the Statue of Liberty and Times Square are easily accessible and not-to-be-missed. And if you can, sneak in a quick walk in Central Park or a gaze at the city from the Top of the Rock. The views are surreal!
  • Insider Tips for Quick City Exploration: Want to explore NYC in a jiffy? Hop-on hop-off buses can be a lifesaver! Also, local delis are perfect for grabbing a quick bite—a classic bagel with lox or a New York-style pizza slice!

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Often overlooked by cruisers, the City of Brotherly Love has a lot to offer, especially for history buffs.

  • Historical Sites and Offerings: The Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and the steps Rocky Balboa famously climbed—Philadelphia is a city teeming with stories. Dive into America’s roots while munching on a delectable Philly cheesesteak!
  • Unique Cruise Views: The Delaware River offers a unique vantage point to appreciate Philly. As your ship sails, enjoy the shimmering reflections of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and the city’s skyline.

Cape May, New Jersey

Cape May, with its Victorian charm and serene beaches, is the East Coast’s little secret gem.

  • Historic and Architectural Wonders: This town is famous for its colorful Victorian homes, making it feel like you’ve time-traveled to another era. Guided trolley tours are a fun way to learn about Cape May’s rich history and stunning architecture.
  • Relaxation by the Atlantic: After history lessons in Boston and NYC, Cape May offers a refreshing change of pace. Its pristine beaches are perfect for unwinding. And if you’re a bird enthusiast, the Cape May Bird Observatory is a must-visit during migration seasons!

The Mid-Atlantic region, with its metropolitan marvels and hidden seaside towns, offers a diverse array of experiences for every cruiser.

However, as the landscape starts to shift towards warmer climates and palm trees, get ready for some Southern hospitality up next in the Southeastern ports!

Charleston, South Carolina

Southeastern Serenades: From Carolinas to Florida

As we sail further down the East Coast, we transition from the urban spectacles of the Mid-Atlantic to the warm and breezy embrace of the Southeast.

Think sandy beaches, historic cities, and that undeniable Southern charm. So, let’s explore what this enchanting stretch of the coast has in store for us.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston is a city where history dances on cobblestone streets, and where every corner seems to hum a lullaby of the ages past.

  • Historic Downtown and Waterfront: Wander through the French Quarter, and be dazzled by Rainbow Row’s pastel-colored houses. The Waterfront Park, with its iconic Pineapple Fountain, offers cruisers a tranquil spot to relax and enjoy views of the Cooper River.
  • Culinary Delights: Southern cuisine shines brightly here. From shrimp and grits to mouth-watering barbecue, Charleston will indulge your taste buds. Don’t forget to grab a glass of sweet tea, the Southern staple!

Savannah, Georgia

With its Spanish moss-covered trees and antebellum architecture, Savannah exudes an eerie yet beautiful charm.

  • Historic Squares and Midnight Tours: Savannah’s 22 historic squares are a treat to explore. And if you’re in the mood for some spine-tingling tales, hop onto one of the city’s famous ghost tours that come alive, quite literally, after dark.
  • Savannah Riverfront: The bustling riverfront area, with its cobblestone streets and historic buildings, is filled with unique boutiques, art galleries, and cafes. The river views, paired with live street performances, make for a memorable visit.

Miami, Florida

Welcome to the Magic City! With its sunny beaches, vibrant neighborhoods, and Latin-infused culture, Miami is the East Coast’s vivacious finale.

  • Beaches and Art Deco Dreams: South Beach, with its iconic pastel-hued Art Deco buildings and lively beach scene, is the perfect spot for sunbathing and people-watching. And if you’re into vibrant street art, Wynwood Walls is an absolute must-visit.
  • Cultural Fusion: Immerse yourself in Miami’s rich cultural tapestry. Stroll through Little Havana for some Cuban vibes, complete with cigar shops and salsa rhythms. Enjoy a cafecito or a Cuban sandwich before you set sail once more.

Swaying palm trees, rich histories, and that delightful Southern twang—the Southeast has it all. As our East Coast cruising guide draws to a close, we hope your heart is full of wanderlust, ready to embark on your own journey through these captivating ports.

Tips and Tricks for Navigating East Coast Cruise Ports

So, you’re all set to explore the plethora of wonders the East Coast ports have to offer. But wait, before you embark, let’s ensure you’re equipped with a sailor’s bag full of insights and cruise travel tips to make your voyage smooth and memorable.

Here’s the insider’s guide to making the most of your East Coast cruise experience.

Packing for Diverse Climates

  • Layers are Your Friend: The East Coast weather can be a tad unpredictable. While Boston might greet you with a chilly embrace, Miami promises sun-kissed warmth. Here’s a cruise packing tip , pack in layers—light jackets, breathable tees, and maybe a scarf or two to ensure you’re comfortable throughout.
  • Footwear Matters: Cobblestone streets in Charleston, sandy beaches in Miami—your footwear needs to be versatile. Opt for comfortable walking shoes for city explorations and a pair of flip-flops for those beachy stops.

Local Customs and Etiquette

  • Tipping: While dining out or getting services, remember that tipping is customary in the U.S. A general rule of thumb is 15-20% of your bill.
  • Ask the Locals: Want to discover hidden gems? Don’t shy away from chatting up locals. They often have the best recommendations, be it food, sights, or entertainment.

Planning Shore Excursions

  • Book in Advance: Popular spots, especially in peak seasons, can get crowded. If there’s a specific tour or activity you’ve set your heart on, consider booking it ahead of time.
  • DIY Tours: With the abundance of information available online, consider exploring some ports on your own. There’s a certain joy in wandering around without a set itinerary.

Stay Connected

  • Wi-Fi and Data: Check with your cruise line for onboard Wi-Fi packages. However, while in port, local cafes or restaurants often offer free Wi-Fi. Alternatively, consider purchasing a local SIM for more extended stays.
  • Safety First: Always inform your cruise ship of your whereabouts, especially if you’re venturing out without a guided tour. Share your plans with someone and stick to well-traveled areas.

Culinary Delights: A Taste Tour of East Coast Ports

One of the most incredible aspects of traveling is the ability to immerse yourself in diverse culinary cultures.

As you sail down the East Coast, a medley of flavors and dishes, each deeply rooted in its region’s history and tradition, awaits. Here’s your gastronomic guide to savoring the East Coast, one bite at a time.

  • Seafood Galore: You can’t visit Boston without trying the New England clam chowder. Creamy and packed with flavor, it’s the city’s signature dish. And for the brave-hearted, a plate of fresh oysters is a must!
  • Boston Cream Pie: Indulge your sweet tooth with this delightful dessert. It’s not a pie, but a cake layered with creamy custard and topped with chocolate glaze.
  • The Classic Bagel: A chewy bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon, perhaps with a dash of red onion and capers? It’s a breakfast staple in the Big Apple.
  • Street Food Sensations: From Halal Guys’ chicken over rice to the iconic pretzel stands, NYC’s streets are a culinary paradise.
  • Low Country Boil: A delicious mix of shrimp, corn, potatoes, and sausages, seasoned and boiled to perfection. It’s a communal dish, best enjoyed with friends and family.
  • Sweet Tea: The South’s preferred beverage. It’s chilled, sugary, and absolutely refreshing.
  • Cuban Sandwich: Pressed to perfection, this sandwich boasts ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard, all encased in Cuban bread.
  • Key Lime Pie: This tangy and sweet pie, with its graham cracker crust and creamy filling, is a slice of Floridian paradise.
  • Philly Cheesesteak: Thinly sliced steak, a generous helping of melted cheese, all nestled within a long roll. Choose your cheese and decide if you want onions. Pro-tip: locals often order theirs “wit” or “witout” referring to the onions!
  • Salt Water Taffy: Chewy and flavorful, these candies are a beachside treat. Grab an assortment to take back home as souvenirs.

From the hearty flavors of the North to the spicy and tangy tastes of the South, the East Coast serves a culinary journey as diverse and memorable as its ports and landmarks. So, as you dock, be sure to disembark with an appetite. After all, to truly know a place, you must taste it!

FAQ: Cruise Ports East Coast

1. How do I pick the best cruise line for an East Coast voyage?

Consider your budget, desired amenities, ship size preference, and specific destinations you want to visit. Reading reviews and seeking recommendations can also help in making an informed choice.

2. What’s the best season to cruise the East Coast?

Spring (April to June) and Fall (September to November) are considered ideal. The weather is pleasant, and you’ll avoid the summer tourist rush and potential hurricane season in the late summer.

3. Are there smaller ships or yachts for a more intimate experience?

Absolutely! There are several smaller cruise lines and private yacht charters that offer a more personal cruising experience along the East Coast.

4. Can I embark and disembark from different ports?

This depends on the cruise line and specific itinerary. Some cruises offer one-way routes, while others require round-trip journeys. Always check in advance.

5. Is it cheaper to book shore excursions with the cruise line or independently?

Booking independently can sometimes be cheaper, but booking through the cruise line often offers the convenience and assurance that the ship won’t leave without you if the tour runs late.

6. What are the must-try dishes in each of the ports?

From Boston’s clam chowder to Miami’s Cuban sandwich, each port offers unique culinary delights. Refer to our Culinary Delights section for more specifics.

8. What’s the best way to stay connected while cruising?

Many cruise lines offer onboard Wi-Fi packages. Alternatively, you can opt for local SIM cards or seek out cafes with free Wi-Fi while in port.

9. How accessible are these ports for travelers with disabilities?

Most major ports on the East Coast are equipped to accommodate travelers with disabilities. However, it’s always advisable to check in advance and notify your cruise line of any specific needs.

10. Is it safe to explore the ports on my own?

Generally, the major cruise ports on the East Coast are safe for tourists. However, always follow general safety precautions—stick to well-traveled areas, avoid venturing out late at night alone, and inform someone of your plans.

Remember, every cruise and traveler is unique. What remains constant is the allure of the East Coast—a region steeped in history, culture, and natural beauty. We hope this FAQ helps as you chart your course for an unforgettable voyage!

Cape Liberty Bayonne cruise port

Region East Coast USA and Canada New England

Local Time 2024-04-04 17:02

Port Cape Liberty Bayonne cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Cape Liberty Bayonne, New Jersey. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

The Port of New York and New Jersey occupies a large area in New York Harbor, encompassing the coastline within a 25-mi/40-km radius of the Liberty Statue. The Port (locode USNYC) has a total of three cruise ports - two in NYC (New York) and one in Bayonne (New Jersey). These ports have separate passenger terminals and docking infrastructure.

In New York City are the New York Passenger Ship Terminal (Manhattan Island's western coast, Hudson River) and Brooklyn Cruise Terminal (~6 mi / 10 km to the south, on eastern Upper New York Bay, Buttermilk Channel, Brooklyn's Red Hook waterline).

Cape Liberty Cruise Port (part of Port Jersey) is also in New York Harbor (Upper NY Bay, fka MOTBY/Military Ocean Terminal at Bayonne) but is part of Bayonne NJ.

IMPORTANT : Bayonne New Jersey Port's cruise terminal serves Royal Caribbean Group/RCG-owned ships from the fleets of RCG's subsidiaries RCI-Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises . The ships of RCG's subsidiary Silversea dock at NYC's Manhattan Terminal.

The Port of NY and NJ is also a district of the New York-Newark NJ Metro (part of the Greater New York (ranked the world's largest Metro by population/~24 million). New York Metro is a Tri-State region grouping 23 counties (13 in NY, 9 in NJ, and 1 in Pennsylvania/Pike County PA).

By annual cruise ship passenger traffic, Port NY and NJ's terminals are currently ranked the USA's 6th and the world's 16th busiest.

Cape Liberty Cruise Port (Bayonne)

Cape Liberty is an exclusive cruise port in New Jersey (Bayonne Harbor) featuring a 2 mi/3,2 km long dock/pier and a passenger terminal. Port Cape Liberty was inaugurated in May 2004.

Form Bayonne, Royal Caribbean-owned ships operate mainly roundtrip itineraries visiting destinations in the Caribbean (including Florida and The Bahamas) and Bermuda.

In the autumn are operated one-way "Fall Foliage" themed voyages to ports in Canada and New England USA.

On seasonal relocation (RepositionCruises.com) are often offered Transatlantic crossings between NYC-NJ and Europe (Mediterranean) and the UK ( Southampton ).

Cape Liberty is a convenient homeport for sea voyages because most of the tourists arrive by flight, and the cruise port is in close proximity (approx 10 mi/16 km to the east-southeast) to Newark Airport (around 40 minutes drive distance via Highway I-78E).

The Port's main tenant is RCI-Royal Caribbean International , which homeporting/turnaround operations from New Jersey started in May 2006 with Freedom of the Seas . In 2015, RCI's second QUANTUM-class vessel Anthem of the Seas was also homeported in Cape Liberty, replacing Liberty of the Seas .

In 2016, Cape Liberty reported a record number of handled cruise passengers - 509,306, which was 2,4% increase over 2015's 497,780 passengers.

RCI's roundtrips from Bayonne NJ are operated the whole year round. Cruise itinerary lengths vary between 5-12 nights. During summer, Celebrity Cruises also homeports one vessel at Cape Liberty. In 2023, in Bayonne were homeported RCI's ships Oasis OTS , Anthem OTS, Liberty OTS, and Jewel OTS , as well as Celebrity Summit . The Port's schedule 2024 listed the liners Anthem OTS, Liberty OTS, Symphony OTS , Odyssey OTS , and Celebrity Eclipse .

In October 2018, Bayonne City officials selected the company SeaStreak Ferry (1986-founded as TNT Hydrolines) to provide regularly scheduled high-speed commuter ferries for the NY-NJ route. The deal included leasing 65000 ft2/6040 m2 of land at Port Jersey's Marine Terminal. As of 2023, SeaStreak Ferry has a fleet of 9 vessels (double-hulled diesel catamarans) and operates on 3 waterways (Hudson River, East River, New York Bay) linking 8 terminals. On Hudson River, SeaStreak operates the routes linking Belford NJ (Monmouth County) with NYC's Manhattan (Battery Park City Ferry Terminal), and Jersey City (Paulus Hook Ferry Terminal) with NYC's West Midtown Ferry Terminal.

On February 13, 2020, the NY-NJ Port Authority's commissioners approved a 10-year lease for the new commuter ferry service linking Jersey City (Cape Liberty's Military Ocean Terminal) with NYC's Lower Manhattan (Wall Street Pier 11, and East 34th Street Ferry Landing).

In 2018 was inaugurated the ferry route connecting Bayonne with Manhattan (across Hudson River). A US$650,000 federal grant was given to the city for building of a ferry terminal. The facility is on the southern part of Military Ocean Terminal, on an artificial peninsula east of Route 440. The 1,5-acre land site (former US Navy base) was purchased in 2010 and leased for ferry docking at US$200,000 per year.

In the previous year (2017) NYC Ferry inaugurated the commute ferry service linking Manhattan with Long Island (Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Bronx). In 2016, NYC Ferry's fleet consisted of 19 newbuild boats.

  • On May 1st were launched the East River route (North Brooklyn to Midtown and NYC's Financial District) and the Rockaway route (Lower Manhattan to Sunset Park and The Rockaways).
  • On June 1st was launched the South Brooklyn route (8 terminals/between Corlears Hook and Bay Ridge) linking Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, Red Hook, Brooklyn Bridge Park.
  • On August 29th was launched the Astoria route (between Western Queens and Roosevelt Island) linking Wall Street/Pier 11, East 34th Street, LIC/Long Island City Queens, Roosevelt Island Manhattan, and Astoria Queens.

In August 2018, NYC Ferry launched a link between Soundview (South Bronx) and Manhattan. The landing site in Bronx is at Clason Point Park (Sound View Ave's end). The nearest subway station (Morrison Ave-Sound View) is 2 mi (3 km) away. Ferry travel time Bronx-Manhattan is 45-min. In Manhattan, ferries stop at 90th St (Upper East Side), East 34th Str (Midtown), Pier 11 (Wall Str). Currently, NYC Ferry operates 6 routes.

Cape Liberty Bayonne cruise terminal

Port Cape Liberty is to the south of Hudson River, and approx 18 mi/29 km from Manhattan NY (via roads NY-9A S and I-78W, or around 45-min drive distance) and approx 11 mi/18 km from Newark NJ (via Highway I-78E, or around 40-min drive).

Cape Liberty can be accessed from Highway I-95 (exit 6, then NJ Turnpike's exit 14A). Drivers should follow the signs for New Jersey Route 440 South, then continue to "4 Port Terminal Blvd".

The following NY & NJ cruise port map shows the locations of all three cruise terminals (NYC's Manhattan and Brooklyn, and Bayonne NJ's Cape Liberty ).

The Port's address is "4 Port Terminal Boulevard Bayonne, NJ 07002".

Bayonne's cruise port is in close proximity to EWR-Newark Liberty Airport (10 mi / 16 km to the west, ~20-min travel time by car) and easy to access, skipping NYC's heavy traffic and bridges.

In October 2014, Royal Caribbean and NYC & NJ Port Authority dedicated a Cape Liberty Cruise Terminal for the RCI's ship Quantum OTS . The new terminal started operations on November 10, 2014.

The new facility is located at Port Terminal Blvd (Bayonne waterfront), adjacent to the Tear Drop Memorial (Russia-built, 10–story sculpture).

The US$55 million project included port expansion and also improvements to the existing docking pier. The new passenger terminal has a total covered area of 125000 ft2 (11600 m2) and has check-in, customs and immigration, luggage storage and processing areas, public restrooms, free WiFi (throughout), adjacent to the terminal parking area (capacity 950 cars, fitted with its own restroom).

Cruise parking costs US$25 per day (including taxes).

The new terminal building is adjacent to the 2004-inaugurated cruise terminal.

Directly in front of the Cape Liberty Cruise Port's terminal, there are designated luggage drop-off zones.

Fly-cruisers arrive in New Jersey via NYC's LaGuardia Airport and JFK Airport, and also via New Jersey's Newark Liberty Airport. Royal Caribbean provides bus shuttles for direct airport-cruise port transfer on the embarkation day. This is the fastest, cheapest and most secure/guaranteed transfer option.

The alternative is NYC's public transportation system (trains/buses to either Newark (Pennsylvania Station) or Bayonne (45th Street Light Rail Station), then you need to taxi to the cruise terminal. Newark' Penn Station serves regularly scheduled Amtrak trains interconnecting numerous destinations along the US East Coast.

Taxis (as well as Uber and Lyft) are available from all the three international airports but are costly.

MOTBY (Military Ocean Terminal at Bayonne) was operational and used by the US Navy in the period 1967-1999 The terminal was an upgrade/expansion of the former Bayonne Naval Drydock (1942-1967).

Six presumed dead after cargo ship crash levels Baltimore bridge

BALTIMORE — A major Baltimore bridge collapsed like a house of cards early Tuesday after it was struck by a container ship, sending six people to their deaths in the dark waters below, and closing one of the country’s busiest ports.

By nightfall, the desperate search for six people who were working on the bridge and vanished when it fell apart had become a grim search for bodies.

“We do not believe that we’re going to find any of these individuals still alive,” Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon N. Gilreath said.

Jeffrey Pritzker, executive vice president of Brawner Builders, said earlier that one of his workers had survived. He did not release their names.

Up until then, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore had held out hope that the missing people might be found even as law enforcement warned that the frigid water and the fact that there had been no sign of them since 1:30 a.m. when the ship struck Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Moore expressed heartbreak after officials suspended the search for survivors.

"Our heart goes out to the families," he said. "I can’t imagine how painful today has been for these families, how painful these hours have been have been for these families."

It was a crushing blow to the loved ones of the missing men, who had waited for hours at a Royal Farms convenience store near the entrance of the bridge for word of their fate.

Follow live updates on the Baltimore bridge collapse

The tragic chain of events began early Tuesday when the cargo ship Dali notified authorities that it had lost power and issued a mayday moments before the 984-foot vessel slammed into a bridge support at a speed of 8 knots, which is about 9 mph.

Moore declared a state of emergency while rescue crews using sonar detected at least five vehicles in the frigid 50-foot-deep water: three passenger cars, a cement truck and another vehicle of some kind. Authorities do not believe anyone was inside the vehicles.

Investigators quickly concluded that it was an accident and not an act of terrorism.

Ship was involved in another collision

Earlier, two people were rescued from the water, Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said. One was in good condition and refused treatment, he said. The other was seriously injured and was being treated in a trauma center.

Moore said other drivers might have been in the water had it not been for those who, upon hearing the mayday, blocked off the bridge and kept other vehicles from crossing.

“These people are heroes,” Moore said. “They saved lives.”

Nearly eight years ago, the Dali was involved in an accident. In July 2016, it struck a quay at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium, damaging the quay.

The nautical commission investigated the accident, but the details of the inquiry were not immediately clear Tuesday.

The Dali is operated and managed by Synergy Group. In a statement, the company said that two port pilots were at the helm during Tuesday's crash and that all 22 crew members onboard were accounted for.

The Dali was chartered by the Danish shipping giant Maersk, which said it would have no choice but to send its ships to other nearby ports with the Port of Baltimore closed.

The bridge, which is about a mile and a half long and carries Interstate 695 over the Patapsco River southeast of Baltimore, was "fully up to code," Moore said.

National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said that her agency will lead the investigation and that a data recorder on the ship could provide more information.

"But right now we're focusing on the people, on the families," she said. "The rest can wait."

President Joe Biden vowed to rebuild the bridge and send federal funds.

"This is going to take some time," the president warned. "The people of Baltimore can count on us though to stick with them, at every step of the way, till the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt."

Speaking in Baltimore, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg echoed the president's promise.

"This is no ordinary bridge," he said. "This is one of the cathedrals of American infrastructure."

But Buttigieg warned that replacing the bridge and reopening the port will take time and money and that it could affect supply chains.

The Port of Baltimore, the 11th largest in the U.S., is the busiest port for car imports and exports, handling more than 750,000 vehicles in 2023 alone, according to data from the Maryland Port Administration.

Writer David Simon, a champion of Baltimore who set his TV crime drama "The Wire" on the streets of the city he once covered as a reporter, warned online that the people who will suffer the most are those whose livelihoods depend on the port.

"Thinking first of the people on the bridge," Simon posted on X . "But the mind wanders to a port city strangling. All the people who rely on ships in and out."

Timeline of crash

Dramatic video captured the moment at 1:28 a.m. Tuesday when the Dali struck a support and sent the bridge tumbling into the water. A livestream showed cars and trucks on the bridge just before the strike. The ship did not sink, and its lights remained on.

Investigators said in a timeline that the Dali's lights suddenly shut off four minutes earlier before they came back on and that then, at 1:25 a.m. dark black smoke began billowing from the ship's chimney.

A minute later, at 1:26 a.m., the ship appeared to turn. And in the minutes before it slammed into the support, the lights flickered again.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said the workers on the bridge were repairing concrete ducts when the ship crashed into the structure.

At least seven workers were pouring concrete to fix potholes on the roadway on the bridge directly above where the ship hit, said James Krutzfeldt, a foreman.

Earlier, the Coast Guard said it had received a report that a “motor vessel made impact with the bridge” and confirmed it was the Dali, a containership sailing under a Singaporean flag that was heading for Sri Lanka.

Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapses After Being Struck By Cargo Ship

Bobby Haines, who lives in Dundalk in Baltimore County, said he felt the impact of the bridge collapse from his house nearby.

"I woke up at 1:30 this morning and my house shook, and I was freaking out," he said. "I thought it was an earthquake, and to find out it was a bridge is really, really scary."

Families of bridge workers wait for updates

Earlier in the day, relatives of the construction crew waited for updates on their loved ones.

Marian Del Carmen Castellon told Telemundo her husband, Miguel Luna, 49, was working on the bridge.

“They only tell us that we have to wait and that they can’t give us information,” she said.

Castellon said she was "devastated, devastated because our heart is broken, because we don’t know how they have been rescued yet. We are just waiting for the news."

Luna's co-worker Jesús Campos said he felt crushed, too.

“It hurts my heart to see what is happening. We are human beings, and they are my folks,” he said.

Campos told The Baltimore Banner that the missing men are from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.

Active search and rescue ends

The Coast Guard said it was suspending the active search-and-rescue effort at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"Coast Guard’s not going away, none of our partners are going away, but we’re just going to transition into a different phase," Gilreath said at a news conference.

Maryland State Police Superintendent Roland L. Butler, Jr., said it was moving to a recovery operation. Changing conditions have made it dangerous for divers, he said.

Butler pledged to "do our very best to recover those six missing people," but the conditions are difficult.

"If we look at how challenging it is at a simple motor vehicle crash to extract an individual, I'm sure we can all imagine how much harder it is to do it in inclement weather, when it's cold, under the water, with very limited to no visibility," he said.

"There's a tremendous amount of debris in the water," which can include sharp metal and other hazards, and that could take time, Butler said.

'A long road in front of us'

Built in 1977 and referred to locally as the Key Bridge, the structure was later named after the author of the American national anthem.

The bridge is more than 8,500 feet long, or 1.6 miles. Its main section spans 1,200 feet, and it was one of the longest continuous truss bridges in the world upon its completion, according to the National Steel Bridge Alliance .

About 31,000 vehicles a day use the bridge, which equals 11.3 million vehicles per year, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

The river and the Port of Baltimore are both key to the shipping industry on the East Coast, generating more than $3.3 billion a year and directly employing more than 15,000 people.

Asked what people in Baltimore can expect going forward, the state's transportation secretary said it is too early to tell.

"Obviously we reached out to a number of engineering companies, so obviously we have a long road in front of us," Wiedefeld said.

March 26, 2024 - Baltimore Key Bridge collapses after ship collision

By Helen Regan , Kathleen Magramo , Antoinette Radford, Alisha Ebrahimji , Maureen Chowdhury , Rachel Ramirez , Elise Hammond , Aditi Sangal , Tori B. Powell , Piper Hudspeth Blackburn and Kathleen Magramo , CNN

Our live coverage of the Baltimore bridge collapse has moved here .

Crew member on DALI said everyone on board was safe hours after bridge collapse, official says

From CNN’s Amy Simonson

A crew member on the DALI cargo ship sent a message hours after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed Tuesday saying everybody on board was safe, according to Apostleship of the Sea director Andy Middleton.

Middleton, who spent time with the captain of the DALI Monday, told CNN’s Laura Coates he reached out to a crew member after hearing about the incident Tuesday morning.

He said there were 22 members aboard the ship from India who were setting sail earlier Tuesday morning and were heading toward Sri Lanka.

“I was able to reach out to a crew member very early this morning around 5:30 (a.m. ET) or 6 (a.m. ET) and get a message to them asking if they were OK,” he said. “That crew member responded within just a few minutes advising that the crew was safe, and everybody that [was] on board was safe.”

Middleton was told by the ship's captain Monday that the vessel was going to take a longer route to avoid risks along the Yemen coast.

“When I was out with the captain yesterday, we were talking while we were driving, and he advised that they were sailing down and around the tip of South Africa in order to avoid the incidents that are going on off the Yemen coast, and it was a safer way to go,” he said.

Middleton said the  Apostleship of the Sea  is a ministry to seafarers with members that spend time in the port and on the vessels as a friendly face to the seafarers that visit the Port of Baltimore, “taking care of their needs to make sure that they're reminded of their God-given human dignity when they're here in Baltimore.”

Search operation ends in "heartbreaking conclusion," Maryland governor says. Here's the latest

From CNN staff

The Dali container vessel after striking the Francis Scott Key Bridge that collapsed into the Patapsco River in Baltimore, Maryland, on Tuesday, March 26.

Six people, who were believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead after Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning. The collapse came after a 984-foot cargo ship hit the bridge's pillar.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore told reporters Tuesday evening it's a "really heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day."

Late Tuesday, it was discovered that two of the construction workers who went missing after the bridge collapsed were from Guatemala , the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said late Tuesday.

Here's what you should know to get up to speed:

  • The victims: Eight people were on the bridge  when it fell, according to officials. At least two people were rescued — one was taken to the hospital and was later  discharged , fire official and the medical center said.
  • The incident: Video shows the moment the entire bridge structure falls into the water, as the ship hits one of the bridge's pillars. CNN analysis shows that the  ships lights flickered  and it veered off course before it hit the bridge. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the crew on the ship were able to issue a "mayday" before colliding into the bridge, which allowed the authorities to stop incoming traffic from going onto the bridge.
  • Response efforts: Earlier, dive teams from various state and local agencies were brought in to assist in search-and-rescue operations, according to Maryland State Police Secretary Col. Roland L. Butler Jr.. The mission started with 50 personnel and continued to grow before the Coast Guard announced Tuesday evening that it was suspending its active search-and-rescue operation and transitioning to a "different phase."
  • The investigation: Authorities are still working to establish exactly how the crash occurred. The National Transportation Safety Board will look into  how the bridge was built  and investigate the structure itself. It will "take time to dig through" whether the bridge had ever been  flagged for any safety deficiencies , NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said.
  • Rebuilding the bridge: US Sen. Chris Van Hollen said the path to rebuilding the bridge will be "long and expensive." Senior White House adviser Tom Perez told reporters Tuesday “it’s too early” to tell how long it will take to rebuild the bridge. President Joe Biden said Tuesday he wants the federal government to bear the full cost of rebuilding the collapsed bridge, noting that it will not wait for the company who owns the container ship DALI to shoulder the costs. Funding could come from the Federal Highway Administration as well as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, but it may require additional funding from Congress.

2 of the missing construction workers from bridge collapse were from Guatemala, foreign ministry says

From CNN’s Allison Gordon, Flora Charner and Amy Simonson

Two of the construction workers missing from the bridge collapse in Baltimore were from Guatemala, the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement late Tuesday.

Those missing included a 26-year-old originally from San Luis, Petén. The other is a 35-year-old from Camotán, Chiquimula, the statement said.

The ministry said both were part of a work team “repairing the asphalt on the bridge at the time of the accident.”

The statement did not name the two people missing, but it said the country’s consul general in Maryland “went to the area where the families of those affected are located,” where he hopes to be able to meet with the brothers of both missing people.

The consulate   also issued a statement Tuesday saying its consul general in Maryland "remains in contact with local authorities," and also confirmed that two of those missing "were of Guatemalan origin.”

Six people, who were believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead after Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning when a cargo ship hit the bridge's pillar.

State and federal officials have not released information about the identities of any of the six missing workers.

Underwater mapping of bridge collapse area to begin Wednesday, Baltimore fire chief says

From CNN's Jennifer Henderson

Search operations near the Key Bridge collapse have shut down for the night due to dangerous conditions, but the process of underwater mapping with many local, state and federal dive teams will begin Wednesday, Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace told CNN’s Anderson Cooper Tuesday night.

Wallace said the portion of the Patapsco River is “tidal influenced, so it goes through tide cycles just like the open waters of the Chesapeake Bay does.”

The water depths in the area under the bridge vary from 40 feet to more than 60 feet, Wallace said. The deeper the divers go, the colder the temperatures they encounter, and the visibility is zero, he added.

Wallace said when crews arrived Tuesday morning, the surface water temperatures of the Patapsco River were about 47 degrees with an air temperature of 44-45 degrees.

Here's what you should know about the historic Francis Scott Key Bridge

The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday after a massive container ship lost power and crashed into the iconic Baltimore bridge, sending people and vehicles into the frigid Patapsco River.

Six people, believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead and the Coast Guard has ended its active search and rescue mission.

Here's what you should know about the historic bridge:

  • How old?: The Francis Scott Key Bridge, also referred to as just the Key Bridge, opened to traffic in March 1977 and is the final link in the Baltimore Beltway, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA.) It crosses over the 50-foot-deep Patapsco River, where former US attorney Francis Scott Key found inspiration to write the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner, the MDTA says.
  • How long?: The bridge was 1.6 miles long when standing, MDTA reports.
  • Traffic volume: More than 30,000 people commuted daily on the bridge, according to Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.
  • How much did it cost?: The bridge cost $60.3 million to build, MDTA says. Since its collapse, President Joe Biden said he’s committed to helping rebuild the bridge as soon as possible.
  • About the port: Baltimore ranks as the ninth biggest US port for international cargo. It handled a record 52.3 million tons, valued at $80.8 billion, in 2023. According to the Maryland state government, the port supports 15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in related services.
  • About the ship: The bridge collapsed after a container vessel called Dali collided with one of its supports. Dali is operated by Singapore-based Synergy Group but had been chartered to carry cargo by Danish shipping giant Maersk . The ship is about 984 feet long , according to MarineTraffic data. That’s the length of almost three football fields.

Baltimore woman says bridge collapse was "like a piece of family dissolved"

From CNN's Kit Maher

For longtime Baltimore resident, Ceely, who opted not to share her last name, seeing footage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse  Tuesday was deeply personal.

“I was very heavy-hearted,” Ceely told CNN. “Very tearful, thinking about the families whose loved ones may be in the water and just remembering when the bridge was constructed, and it was just like a piece of family dissolved.”

Ceely was at a prayer group Tuesday morning when she saw the news. She recalled being afraid when she first crossed the bridge while in Ford Maverick in 1975, but grew to like it because it saved time on the road.

“It was a main artery just like a blood line. It was a main artery to the other side of town. It was awesome. It beat going through the city all the time,” she said.

Elder Rashad A. Singletary , a senior pastor who led Tuesday night’s vigil at Mt. Olive Baptist Church told CNN that many church members watched the bridge's construction.

"It’s a part of the community. A lot of our individuals in our congregation drive that bridge to go to work, and so now it’s really a life changing moment,” he said.

"Heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day," Maryland governor says as Coast Guard ended search operation

From CNN's Aditi Sangal

People look out toward the Francis Scott Key Bridge following its collapse in Baltimore, Maryland on March 26.

More than 18 hours after the collapse of the Baltimore bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said it was a heartbreaking conclusion after the Coast Guard ended the search-and-rescue operation for the six people who were on the bridge when it collapsed.

It's a "really heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day," he said.

"We put every single asset possible — air, land and sea" to find the missing people, he told reporters on Tuesday evening. "While even though we're moving on now to a recovery mission, we're still fully committed to making sure that we're going to use every single asset to now bring a sense of closure to the families," the governor added.

6 people presumed dead after Baltimore bridge collapse, Coast Guard says. Here's what we know

As the sun sets in Baltimore, six people are presumed dead after a major bridge collapsed overnight Tuesday, according to the Coast Guard. The Francis Scott Key Bridge came down around 1:30 a.m. ET after a cargo ship collided with it.

The Coast Guard said it has ended its active search-and-rescue operation for the missing construction workers who were on the bridge when it collapsed.

  • What we know: Eight people were on the bridge when it fell, according to officials. At least two people were rescued — one was taken to the hospital and has been discharged . The Coast Guard has been searching for six other people. But, around 7:30 p.m. ET, the Coast Guard said it has transitioned to a “different phase” of operation, now it did “not believe we are going to find any of these individuals alive,” Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath said.
  • About the ship: The bridge collapsed after a container vessel called Dali collided with one of its supports. The vessel is operated by Singapore-based Synergy Group but had been chartered to carry cargo by Danish shipping giant Maersk . The US Embassy in Singapore has been in contact with the country’s Maritime and Port Authority, a State Department spokesperson said.
  • The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the collapse. A team of 24 experts will dig into nautical operations, vessel operations, safety history records, owners, operators, company policy and any safety management systems or programs, said NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy. A voyage data recorder will be critical to the investigation, she added.
  • Vehicles on the bridge: Officials are also working to verify the numbers of how many cars and people were on the bridge, Homendy said. Gov. Wes Moore said the quick work of authorities in closing the bridge had saved lives . Radio traffic captured how authorities stopped traffic and worked to clear the bridge seconds before the impact . Maryland State Police Secretary Col. Roland L. Butler Jr. said there is a “ distinct possibility ” more vehicles were on the bridge, but authorities have not found any evidence to support that.
  • Looking ahead: NTSB will look into how the bridge was built and investigate the structure itself, including if it was flagged for any safety deficiencies , Homendy said. The federal government has also directed its resources to help with search and rescue, to reopen the port and rebuild the bridge, Vice President Kamala Harris said . Earlier, President Joe Biden said t he federal government will pay to fix the bridge.
  • The economy: Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg warned the collapse will have a serious impact on supply chains . Until the channel is reopened, ships will likely already be changing course for other East Coast ports. Ocean carriers are already being diverted from the Port of Baltimore, where the bridge collapsed, to the Port of Virginia to “keep trade moving."

‘A Lot of Chaos’: Bridge Collapse Creates Upheaval at Largest U.S. Port for Car Trade

A bridge collapse closed Baltimore’s port, an important trade hub that ranks first in the nation by the volume of automobiles and light trucks it handles.

Shipping in the Port of Baltimore

Monthly cargo handled by the Port of Baltimore

The Baltimore bridge disaster on Tuesday upended operations at one of the nation’s busiest ports, with disruptions likely to be felt for weeks by companies shipping goods in and out of the country — and possibly by consumers as well.

The upheaval will be especially notable for auto makers and coal producers for whom Baltimore has become one of the most vital shipping destinations in the United States.

As officials began to investigate why a nearly 1,000-foot cargo ship ran into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the middle of the night, companies that transport goods to suppliers and stores scrambled to get trucks to the other East Coast ports receiving goods diverted from Baltimore. Ships sat idle elsewhere, unsure where and when to dock.

“It’s going to cause a lot of chaos,” said Paul Brashier, vice president for drayage and intermodal at ITS Logistics.

The closure of the Port of Baltimore is the latest hit to global supply chains, which have been strained by monthslong crises at the Panama Canal, which has had to slash traffic because of low water levels; and the Suez Canal, which shipping companies are avoiding because of attacks by the Houthis on vessels in the Red Sea.

The auto industry now faces new supply headaches.

Last year, 570,000 vehicles were imported through Baltimore, according to Sina Golara, an assistant professor of supply chain management at Georgia State University. “That’s a huge amount,” he said, equivalent to nearly a quarter of the current inventory of new cars in the United States.

The Baltimore port handled a record amount of foreign cargo last year, and it was the 17th biggest port in the nation overall in 2021, ranked by total tons, according to Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

Baltimore Ranks in the Top 20 U.S. Ports

Total trade in 2021 in millions of tons

Baltimore ranks first in the United States for the volume of automobiles and light trucks it handles, and for vessels that carry wheeled cargo, including farm and construction machinery, according to a statement by Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland last month.

The incident is another stark reminder of the vulnerability of the supply chains that transport consumer products and commodities around the world.

The extent of the disruption depends on how long it takes to reopen shipping channels into the port of Baltimore. Experts estimate it could take several weeks.

Baltimore is not a leading port for container ships, and other ports can likely absorb traffic that was headed to Baltimore, industry officials said.

Stephen Edwards, the chief executive of the Port of Virginia, said it was expecting a vessel on Tuesday that was previously bound for Baltimore, and that others would soon follow. “Between New York and Virginia, we have sufficient capacity to handle all this cargo,” Mr. Edwards said, referring to container ships.

“Shipping companies are very agile,” said Jean-Paul Rodrigue, a professor in the department of maritime business administration at Texas A&M University-Galveston. “In two to three days, it will be rerouted.”

But other types of cargo could remain snarled.

Alexis Ellender, a global analyst at Kpler, a commodities analytics firm, said he expected the port closure to cause significant disruption of U.S. exports of coal. Last year, about 23 million metric tons of coal exports were shipped from the port of Baltimore, about a quarter of all seaborne U.S. coal shipments. About 12 vessel had been expected to leave the port of Baltimore in the next week or so carrying coal, according to Kpler.

He noted that it would not make a huge dent on the global market, but he added that “the impact is significant for the U.S. in terms of loss of export capacity.”

“You may see coal cargoes coming from the mines being rerouted to other ports instead,” he said, with a port in Norfolk, Va., the most likely.

If auto imports are reduced by Baltimore’s closure, inventories could run low, particularly for models that are in high demand.

“We are initiating discussions with our various transportation providers on contingency plans to ensure an uninterrupted flow of vehicles to our customers and will continue to carefully monitor this situation,” Stellantis, which owns Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram, said in a statement.

Other ports have the capacity to import cars, but there may not be enough car transporters at those ports to handle the new traffic.

“You have to make sure the capacity exists all the way in the supply chain — all the way to the dealership,” said Mr. Golara, the Georgia State professor.

A looming battle is insurance payouts, once legal liability is determined. The size of the payout from the insurer is likely to be significant and will depend on factors including the value of the bridge, the scale of loss of life compensation owed to families of people who died, the damage to the vessel and disruption to the port.

The ship’s insurer, Britannia P&I Club, part of a global group of insurers, said in a statement that it was “working closely with the ship manager and relevant authorities to establish the facts and to help ensure that this situation is dealt with quickly and professionally.”

The port has also increasingly catered to large container ships like the Dali, the 948-foot-long cargo vessel carrying goods for the shipping giant Maersk that hit a pillar of the bridge around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The Dali had spent two days in Baltimore’s port before setting off toward the 1.6-mile Francis Scott Key Bridge.

State-owned terminals, managed by the Maryland Port Administration, and privately owned terminals in Baltimore transported a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo in 2023, worth $80 billion.

Materials transported in large volumes through the city’s port include coal, coffee and sugar. It was the ninth-busiest port in the nation last year for receiving foreign cargo, in terms of volume and value.

The bridge’s collapse will also disrupt cruises traveling in and out of Baltimore. Norwegian Cruise Line last year began a new fall and winter schedule calling at the Port of Baltimore.

An earlier version of this article misstated the Port of Baltimore’s rank among U.S. ports. It was the nation’s 17th biggest port by total tons in 2021, not the 20th largest.
