Is Santa Barbara Worth Visiting?

Santa Barbara is one of my absolute favorite cities not only in California but probably in most of my travels. I went to college in Santa Barbara and still go back to visit the city a few times every year because it’s just that incredible to spend time in!

However, the answer to whether or not Santa Barbara is worth visiting for YOU ultimately depends on what you’re looking for in a vacation. On the one hand, Santa Barbara boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in California, with crystal-clear waters and golden sands. It’s also home to a thriving wine country, with plenty of vineyards and tasting rooms to explore. Additionally, the city’s Spanish Colonial architecture and rich history make it a fascinating cultural destination.

On the other hand, Santa Barbara can also be quite expensive, with high costs for accommodations, dining, and activities. The city is also a popular tourist destination, which means it can be crowded during peak season. Overall, if you’re looking for a picturesque coastal destination with plenty of outdoor activities, rich culture, and great wine, Santa Barbara is definitely worth considering.

34. Parking: Compared to other large coastal cities in California, parking here is heavenly! 35. Stearns Wharf: Spend some time exploring the wharf where you will find plenty of souvenir shops, ice cream parlors, restaurants, and the Sea Center.

CONS – Why Santa Barbara Is NOT Worth Visiting

 36. Cost: The cost of living is high in Santa Barbara. It’s a lovely area because it can’t be overdeveloped as it’s wedged in between the mountains and ocean, however, that also means property value is extremely high. This translates to high costs for accommodation, dining, attractions, etc.

37. Flooding: When heavy rain comes in the winter, the potential for flooding increases. It can get fairly bad in the city, with flooded streets and road closures.

38. Crowds: Santa Barbara is a popular tourist and wedding destination, meaning it can get fairly crowded, especially during the high-season tourist months over the summer.

Stearns Wharf

39. Wildfires: There have been increasing cases of wildfires in the Santa Barbara region, especially in the fall after the plants have dried up from the summer heat. While wildfire doesn’t tend to directly affect tourist areas, it can cause excessive smoke and road closures leading into and around town.

40. Mudslides: Intense rain with a lack of plants after the fires means there is an increased potential for mudslides as well. Areas in the mountains and Montecito are especially at risk for destruction due to mudslides.

41. Weather: While the weather stays fairly mild and nice year-round, it can get a bit chilly, grey, and windy during the winter months.

grey day in Santa Barbara

42. Homelessness: Like many other bigger cities in California, Santa Barbara has some cases of people experiencing homelessness. While these people do not typically cause any problems, they may be a concern for some.

43. Nightlife & Events: For some that are looking for a big city and an excess of choices of nightlife and events, Santa Barbara may feel too small.

How Many Days Should I Spend in Santa Barbara?

The ideal length of a trip to Santa Barbara depends on your interests and travel style. If you want to explore the city’s attractions, sample its cuisine, and enjoy some beach time, plan to spend at least 2-3 days in Santa Barbara.

However, if you want to explore the surrounding area, including nearby wineries, hiking trails, and beaches, consider staying for 4-5 days or more . Whether you have a few days or a week, Santa Barbara offers plenty of opportunities to explore its natural beauty, culture, and history.

Is Santa Barbara Safe?

Yes, Santa Barbara is generally considered a safe destination for tourists and locals alike. While no place is entirely free from crime, Santa Barbara’s crime rate is relatively low compared to other California cities of its size.

The city also has an active police department and a strong community policing program that focuses on building relationships between law enforcement and community members. Visitors should still exercise common sense safety practices , such as locking their vehicles, securing their valuables, and not walking alone at night, but overall, Santa Barbara is a safe and enjoyable place to visit.

Santa Barbara offers a variety of neighborhoods and areas to stay in, each with its own unique charm and attractions. There are options on Upper State Street as well as Lower, though I would recommend staying towards Lower State Street and the wharf if you don’t have a car or want to walk as much as possible while visiting.

Otherwise, there are also some budget options in Goleta to the north and some quieter areas outside of downtown.

Best Months to Visit Santa Barbara

The mild Mediterranean climate makes Santa Barbara an ideal destination worth visiting year-round. However, the best months to visit Santa Barbara depend on your interests and what you want to do during your stay.

If you’re interested in beach activities and want to experience the warmest temperatures, the best time to visit Santa Barbara is during the summer months of June through August . During this time, the weather is generally sunny and warm , with temperatures in the mid-70s to mid-80s ° F (23-30 ° C). However, it’s also the most crowded time of year.

If you’re more interested in hiking and exploring the city’s natural beauty, consider visiting Santa Barbara in the spring or fall . During these months, there are not as many tourists and temperatures are still mild, with highs in the 60s to low 70s ° F (15-23 ° C). Plus, the hills and mountains surrounding the city are lush and green and during the spring you will see beautiful flowers in bloom.

Winter is also a great time to visit Santa Barbara, especially if you’re interested in holiday festivities or want to take advantage of off-season rates . While temperatures can be cooler, with highs in the 50s to low 60s ° F (10-16 ° C), the city is still bustling with activity and there are plenty of indoor attractions to explore.

Should I Go to Santa Barbara With or Without a Car?

If you plan on staying in the city center and primarily using public transportation or walking to get around, it may be more convenient to forego renting a car . Santa Barbara has a relatively comprehensive public transportation system, including buses and shuttles, that can take you to many of the city’s top attractions. Additionally, many hotels and vacation rentals in the city center are within walking distance of restaurants, shops, and other attractions.

On the other hand, if you plan on exploring the city and its surrounding areas, renting a car might be the best option . Santa Barbara is a relatively spread-out city, and many of the top attractions, such as the beaches, the Santa Barbara Mission, and the Santa Ynez Mountains, are located outside of the city center. Having a car will allow you to easily access these areas and explore at your own pace.

driving along the PCH

Additionally, if you plan on taking day trips to nearby destinations, such as Solvang or the Channel Islands, having a car will be essential. Plus, it can be a bit tricky to reach Santa Barbara without a car. Though you can take Amtrak from Los Angeles for easy access from the south.

If you decide to rent a car, make sure to check out  DiscoverCars . They compare prices across leading car rental companies to find you the best deals and lowest prices.

Old Mission Santa Barbara

Old Mission Santa Barbara is the city's most iconic landmark. Called the "Queen of the Missions" for its graceful beauty and picturesque setting, this distinctive building shaped the look of the entire city. In 1925, a major earthquake destroyed much of Santa Barbara, and it was rebuilt in Spanish Colonial Revival style, inspired by Old Mission Santa Barbara.

This is the only California mission to remain with the Franciscans since its founding in 1786, and a community of Franciscan friars still lives here today.

Most visitors spend an hour or two taking a self-guided tour, and scheduled docent-led tours are available on certain days.

One of the top places to visit is the church. It was completed in 1820 and was built by Chumash Indians under the leadership of Father Antonio Ripoli after an earthquake destroyed the original chapel and surrounding buildings in 1812.

Highlights include its Roman temple facade, the twin towers (which are unique among the missions), and colonial-era art and sculptures. Today, the mission serves as a parish church — an evocative place to attend a Sunday service.

Mission Rose Garden

Also within the complex is a museum, with art pieces from the colonial period and many interesting artifacts. Especially worth seeing is the beautiful La Huerta Historical Garden , with mission-era plants such as citrus, grapes, pomegranates, and prickly pear.

Another stop on a self-guided tour is the cemetery. Here, many prominent early Spaniards, as well as 4,000 Chumash Indians, found their last resting place.

After visiting the mission, wander across the street and explore the ruins of the old mission aqueduct, built by the Chumash Indians in the early 19th century.

Also, save time to explore the fragrant Mission Rose Garden . A romantic picnic here is one of the best things to do in Santa Barbara for couples.

Address: 2201 Laguna Street, Santa Barbara, California

Stearns Wharf, Santa Barbara

Stearns Wharf offers breathtaking views of the harbor and beaches, backed by the Santa Ynez Mountains. This iconic Santa Barbara pier sits at the bottom of State Street, in the heart of the waterfront tourist area, and a stroll along here to snap some photos is one of the best free things to do in Santa Barbara.

Stearns Wharf was built in 1872 and was, at the time, the longest deep-water pier between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Today, this tourist magnet is home to specialty shops; restaurants; and the Sea Center , one of two sites of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History .

Looking for a restaurant with views? This is a great place to enjoy a seafood lunch overlooking the ocean.

If you're visiting with kids, a fun way to arrive here is to catch the Lil' Toot water taxi from the Santa Barbara Harbor . Once you're here, you can buy an ice cream, stroll around, and soak up the ambience with the kids. Look for harbor seals as you gaze out at the water, and if you have any budding anglers in your family, visit the bait and tackle shop and cast a line off the end of the pier.

Want to stay right near this buzzing tourist hub? Some of Santa Barbara's best beach resorts and several excellent Santa Barbara restaurants overlook the shoreline on either side of the wharf.

Address: 217 Stearns Wharf, Santa Barbara, California

Santa Barbara County Courthouse

Completed in 1929, after an earthquake destroyed much of the city in 1925, the Santa Barbara County Courthouse is a National (and State) Historic Landmark and an architectural jewel. This is one of the top places to visit in Santa Barbara, not just to admire its graceful architecture, but also to enjoy beautiful views of the city from the clocktower.

In the heart of downtown Santa Barbara, this eye-catching landmark occupies a full city block and is an example of Spanish-Colonial Revival style. As you wander the tiled corridors, notice the hand-painted ceilings; ornate tile work, some of which is from Tunisia and Spain; and wrought-iron chandeliers.

Another highlight is the Mural Room, which tells the story of Santa Barbara's history. Free docent-guided tours are available at scheduled times.

View over Santa Barbara's red-tile roofs from the courthouse clock tower

Surrounding the courthouse is a beautiful sunken garden , with palms and plants from more than 25 different countries. Concerts, community events, and weddings are often staged here, including lively dance performances during the Old Spanish Days Fiesta celebrations in early August.

Photographers take note: For one of the city's best photo ops, take the elevator to the top of the 85-foot El Mirador clock tower for gorgeous views over the red-tiled roofs of the city towards the ocean. It's also a popular place for wedding proposals.

Address: 1100 Anacapa Street, Santa Barbara, California

Cabrillo Bike Path

Looking for a way to get fit and go sightseeing at the same time? Biking along the waterfront on the Cabrillo Bike Path is one of the top activities in Santa Barbara. Tall palms wave overhead, a cool breeze blows in off the ocean, and you can bike between some of Santa Barbara's best beaches, as well as some of the city's top tourist attractions.

Wondering where to rent a bike? Head to Wheel Fun Rentals on Cabrillo Boulevard, opposite Stearns Wharf, and you'll be spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing a bike style. Beach cruisers, mountain bikes, Taga bikes, push buggies, Deuce Coupes, pedal go-karts, and scooters are all available. Traveling with kids? You can even rent a family-size Surrey with a fringe on top.

If an electric bike is more your style, keep an eye out for Santa Barbara BCycle . This new electric bike share app has docking stations scattered along the waterfront.

Hop on the bike path, and cruise for miles in either direction. From Stearns Wharf, pedal east, past Santa Barbara's ocean-view skate park, Skater's Point , and you can bike all the way past the big estates to Montecito's Butterfly Beach. Head west, and you'll end up at Leadbetter Beach. Along the way, stop off at the Santa Barbara Harbor for a bite to eat, or Shoreline Beach Cafe , where you can dine with your toes in the sand.

Leadbetter Beach

Santa Barbara beaches are among the best beaches in Southern California . Backed by the rugged Santa Ynez Mountains and protected by the Channel Islands offshore, the south-facing coastline offers the perfect slice of sand and sea for every type of beach lover.

East Beach and West Beach are tourist favorites. Stretching in either direction from Stearns Wharf, these two beaches capture the classic image of the California coast. Tall palms line their shores, and volleyball nets line up along the soft sand.

From West Beach, head west on the Cabrillo Bike Path, and you'll end up at sheltered surfer-fave, Leadbetter Beach .

Head east on the bike path, and you'll end up at petite and picturesque Butterfly Beach in posh Montecito, a perfect picnic and people-watching spot. Also in Montecito, the beautiful Miramar Beach is suited for swimming and gawking at the impressive beachfront homes.

Need a kid-friendly Santa Barbara beach? Hendry's is a top choice. Officially known as Arroyo Burro County Beach Park, this local favorite offers gentle surf; a fantastic beachfront restaurant, the Boathouse ; and lifeguards in season. Best of all, your pooch can run wild on the off-leash section of the beach.

And if you're just looking for the best pockets of sand for sunbathing, you're in luck! All of Santa Barbara's beautiful beaches offer stunning scenery, soft sand, and almost year-round sunshine.

Santa Barbara Zoo

The superb Santa Barbara Zoo is one of the top things to do in Santa Barbara with kids . Encompassing more than 30 acres, the zoo occupies a beautiful setting on a hilltop overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Its large, open spaces and lush gardens of palms and native plants impart the feel of a botanical garden, making it a lovely place to stroll around.

For such a small zoo, you'll find an impressive variety of animals here. Highlights include the lions, snow leopards, California condors, meerkats, and the excellent western lowland gorilla exhibit.

Best of all, you'll find an engaging line-up of interactive experiences for the kids. Little ones can feed the animals at the barnyard and hand-feed giraffes as well. Don't miss the new Australian Walkabout exhibit, with emus, wallabies, and kangaroos.

If you want a quick overview of the exhibits, or you just want to rest your feet, hop aboard the zoo train. It travels around the exhibits and offers views of Santa Barbara along the way.

Humpback whale

Few things are as exhilarating as watching a humpback whale breach from the ocean, and in Santa Barbara, you can enjoy a front-row seat. Whale-watching cruises whisk you right to all the action.

More than 30 different species of whales and dolphins swim in the waters of the Santa Barbara Channel, making it one of the best places in the country to view marine mammals in the wild. From May through November, humpback and blue whales feed here, and gray whales migrate along the Santa Barbara coast on their northern and southern migration.

Even if you don't spot whales, you can usually see other wildlife such as dolphins, sea lions, and even orcas.

One of the most popular whale-watching cruises takes place aboard the Condor Express, which also offers a whale-watching guarantee — if you don't spot any marine animals on your cruise, you can take another cruise for free another time.

Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History

For more than a century, this interactive museum has featured fascinating displays on the region's natural history. Today, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History encompasses two campuses: The Mission Canyon campus, nestled in beautiful oak woodland along Mission Creek, and the Sea Center on Stearns Wharf, which offers a window into the underwater world of the Santa Barbara Channel.

One of the first things you'll notice at the Mission Canyon campus is a life-size 72-foot blue whale skeleton at the entrance, a great exhibit to see before heading out on a whale-watching trip.

Other popular exhibits here include displays on the Chumash Indians; the mammal hall; the Gladwin Planetarium , with interactive exhibits on space exploration; and the lovely woodland nature trail along the creek. Special exhibitions complement the permanent collection — there's something fun here for adults and kids alike.

During summer, don't miss the Butterflies Alive! exhibit for up-close views of these winged beauties.

Jellyfish at the Sea Center

The Sea Center , with beautiful views over the water, is also wonderful for families with children. Here, you can touch a baby shark, feel the texture of a sea anemone tentacle, hold a hermit crab, and see alien-like jellyfish. Other interactive exhibits involve hauling up a catch in the crab pot, studying animal behavior, and examining microscopic marine life.

Santa Barbara is a haven for shoppers, and the epicenter is State Street downtown. Since May 2020, 10 blocks of State Street have been converted to a pedestrian-only thoroughfare. Wander along the walking street and browse specialty shops, antique stores, and boutiques.

Cafés and restaurants spill out onto the sidewalks here and make great people-watching spots. Locals' favorite dinner locations include Arigato Sushi ; Jane ; and the Santa Barbara classic, Joe's Cafe . For breakfast, Jeannine's at the Shore serves up all your favorites — from eggs benedict to berry-topped waffles.

State Street also hosts Paseo Nuevo , a Spanish-style outdoor shopping mall punctuated by potted palms and fountains. Once the beating heart of downtown, it now hosts a few alfresco eateries and small boutiques.

Santa Barbara Harbor

The Santa Barbara Harbor is a lovely spot for a stroll on a sunny day. Wander along the breakwater and look for harbor seals, watch the sailors rigging up their boats, or dine along the waterfront — locals' favorite Brophy's Santa Barbara is one of the best restaurants in Santa Barbara for fresh seafood with a harbor view.

After soaking up the salty sea air, you might want to learn a little about Santa Barbara's rich maritime history. The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum on the waterfront is the place to go. You'll see all sorts of antique equipment here, and you can also explore exhibits on military history and model ships.

Boutique in the Funk Zone in Santa Barbara

The Funk Zone in Santa Barbara is urban renewal at its best. Boutique shops; cutting-edge art galleries; street art; tasting rooms; and some of Santa Barbara's best restaurants, cafés, and entertainment venues now reside in imaginatively converted warehouses in this hip arts district.

Looking for things to do in Santa Barbara at night? This is one of the best places to visit for Santa Barbara's nightlife scene. Funk Zone Live is a trendy new art walk held every second Saturday of the month. Pop into the open studios and galleries and mingle with painters, jewelers, printmakers, musicians, and other artists.

And if dining is your main mission, consider taking a foodie tour. That way, you can explore the district and sample some of the artisan foods and beverages in the local tasting rooms at the same time. Don't miss a meal at The Lark , one of Santa Barbara's best restaurants, or the Asian street food at the plant-forward Tyger Tyger .

Trying to find a unique gift or vintage treasure? You can probably find what you're looking for in one of the eclectic boutique shops here. Loveworn and The Blue Door are favorites. If you're visiting with the kids, MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation sits right on the district's edge.

Getting here is easy. It's only two blocks from the beach, between Cabrillo Blvd. and Highway 101.

Lotusland

Lotusland has been called one of the most beautiful gardens in the world . This inspiring collection of botanical beauties lies in the upscale enclave of Montecito, about 10 minutes from downtown Santa Barbara.

Three different owners contributed to this stunning botanical collection, but it was the last and most flamboyant, the famous Polish opera singer Madame Ganna Walska, who transformed it over more than four decades into the dramatic display you see today. The gardens lie on Ganna Walska's estate, where she lived until she passed in 1984.

Madame Walska was one of the first garden designers to use mass plantings for dramatic emphasis. Entire gardens of sculptural agaves, contorted cacti, slender euphorbia, and spiky cycads impart a theatrical quality to the garden's design, and the garden's namesake lotus flowers flourish in the former swimming pool.

Highlights are the Blue Garden; Palm Garden; Japanese Garden; and Theatre Garden, with a collection of antique stone figures from France.

Don't miss Madame's prized specimens: three extremely rare and gigantic cycads that are now extinct in the wild.

Two-hour guided tours are offered from Wednesday to Saturday. Advance reservations are essential.

Santa Barbara Botanic Garden

Craving a dose of nature? Head to the beautiful Santa Barbara Botanic Garden . Set on 78 acres of natural woodland, with beautiful views of the mountains and ocean, the gardens showcase around 1,000 types of native California plants and trees.

More than 5.5 miles of paths wind their way through the pine-scented woodland. Highlights include the historic Mission Dam and aqueduct, built in 1807 to funnel water to the Santa Barbara Mission; the magnificent redwood grove; a wildflower meadow; and a lovely Japanese teahouse and tea garden.

A portion of the garden is designated a Santa Barbara County Historic Landmark, and you can take a guided tour or stroll the paths on your own.

Afterward, stop by the museum gift shop and nursery, where you can buy your own California native plants. Reservations are required for all guests.

El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Site

El Presidio is a striking slice of history in the middle of downtown Santa Barbara. This fortified military settlement (presidio) was founded by the Spaniards in 1782.

Two of the fort's original adobe buildings still stand: El Cuartel and the Cañedo Adobe. Tours start at the visitor center with exhibits on the history of the presidio and a brief orientation.

From here, you can take a self-guided tour of the reconstructed Chapel, Comandancia, and Padre's Quarters, as well as reconstructions of rooms that once housed the Presidio's Lieutenant; a two-story observation tower; and a beautiful heritage garden, with plants from the era, like prickly pear and grapes.

Behind the north wing are the 1940s Whittaker orchards and the archaeological site of the Presidio outer defense wall.

El Presidio also hosts the monthly market Farmer & the Flea , where you'll find a unique mix of vintage clothes, artisan goods, and local art.

Address: 123 East Canon Perdido Street, Santa Barbara, California

El Paseo shops

El Paseo feels like a small Spanish village in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara. Steeped in Spanish Colonial Revival style, this evocative complex of shops, restaurants, and galleries was built around the historic Casa de la Guerra adobe in 1920. Today, the adobe is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The adobe was built by the commander of El Presidio de Santa Barbara, José de la Guerra, between 1819 and 1828. The commander and his wife raised their family here, and over the years, it became the social, political, and cultural center of Santa Barbara. It remains an excellent example of an affluent, Spanish-Mexican-style home during the period.

Casa de la Guerra adobe

El Paseo Restaurant , located here, is the oldest restaurant in Santa Barbara and is especially popular during the annual Old Spanish Days Festival events.

Guided tours of El Paseo are available with advance reservations. Note that the main entrance is on the 800 block of State Street .

Address: 15 East De la Guerra Street, Santa Barbara, California

is santa barbara nice to visit

One of the most idyllic cities in the entire country, you can’t go wrong when you visit Santa Barbara. Thanks to hundreds of activities and things to do in Santa Barbara, you’ll never get bored. Plus, with temperatures that hover between 67-80 degrees year-round, you can plan a beach day almost 365 days a year. Plus, no matter where you live, you’re no more than 15 minutes from the ocean, mountains, or great food and drinks.

Some call it perfection. We call it Santa Barbara.

Below you’ll find some of my favorite places to visit and things to do in Santa Barbara, California!

is santa barbara nice to visit

18 Amazing Tours and Things to Do in Santa Barbara

1. go whale watching in the santa barbara channel.

is santa barbara nice to visit

The Santa Barbara Channel is nutrient-rich, attracting wildlife from all over during their migration routes north and south. I’ve been on three whale-watching outings and cannot speak more highly of the team at Condor Express. Their summer trips are 4.5 hours and 100% worth it.

For those with a camera, this is one of those things to do in Santa Barbara that you can’t pass up.

2. Enjoy McConnell’s Ice Cream

Some swear it’s the most incredible ice cream on Earth. I’m not sure I could say that (though I believe most ice cream is one deviation away at max, so they all taste the same), but it is dang good. There are three locations in Santa Barbara, with the most popular two on Upper and Lower State Street.

3. Visit the Santa Barbara Mission

places to see in Santa Barbara Mission

Founded in 1786, it was the tenth of 21 California Missions. It’s a stunning architectural feat, and its historical implication for the city are immense. I highly recommend taking the tour ($15) and learning about the mission and town.

4. Go Wine Tasting in and around Santa Barbara!

Going wine tasting is one of my favorite things to do in Santa Barbara.

Santa Barbara has some of the most incredible wines in the entire country. (Sorry, Napa.) You can either do it in town or drive for 35 minutes and go wine tasting at the vineyards in Santa Ynez Valley. This is definitely one of the top things to do in Santa Barbara.

Book your wine tastings here.

5. Eat at Cold Springs Tavern

A hidden gem in the Santa Ynez Mountains, the Cold Springs Tavern is about 30 minutes from downtown but is at the top of places to visit in Santa Barbara. This old stagecoach stop is now a fantastic meal spot. Unfortunately, they are only open Thursday – Sunday, with varying hours.

We had their Tri-Tip sandwich for lunch when I went, which was delicious.

6. Enjoy the smells at the Botanical Garden

Spend a half day adventuring around the beautiful botanical gardens and end it with a stunning view from the high point overlooking the city. There are so many plant species here it’ll have your head spinning!

Checking out the botanical gardens was an amazing things to do in Santa Barbara.

7. Take a boat to the Channel Islands National Park

Visiting Channel Islands National Park is one of the best things to do in Santa Barbara.

Now, this is technically not in Santa Barbara. You’ll have to drive 30 down the coast to Ventura to hop on one of the boats, which will transport you to the National Park. However, I highly recommend visiting if you have the chance. Make sure to hike out to Potato Harbor when you visit.

There are animals and plants found nowhere else on Earth!

Book your trip to the Channel Islands!

8. Enjoy Beer and Wine in the Funk Zone

There’s a drink for everyone in the Funk Zone. With two dozen breweries or wineries to choose from, it’s the perfect place to spend the entire day and night. My favorites are TopaTopa, Biergarten, and Pali Wine, but they’re all delicious, and you can’t go wrong.

9. Visit the Santa Barbara Zoo

A lioness staring at the camera at the Santa Barbara Zoo.

Visiting the Santa Barbara Zoo isn’t just great for families but for anyone wanting a calm day amongst beautiful animals. We loved spending half a day here and found the lions to be especially playful!

Free things to do in Santa Barbara

10. visit the santa barbara hot springs.

It’s a four to five-mile round trip hike to the hot springs, which makes it far enough away to keep crowds decent but not too far where you’re exhausted afterward. It’s been built up into a nice multi-tier system, with the hottest pools at the top and cooler ones at the bottom.

Easily one of my favorite things to do in Santa Barbara.

visit santa barbara hot springs

11. Visit Butterfly Beach

Enjoying sunset at Butterfly Beach is one of my favorite things to do in Santa Barbara.

My favorite beach in Santa Barbara . The views are mesmerizing, and the flower and plant display next to the bike path is beautiful. During the summer months, it’s a beach that gets busy during the day, but as the sun begins to dip, people leave, and you’ll have a much more peaceful time.

Make sure you add this to your things to do in Santa Barbara checklist.

12. Enjoy Sunset at Lizards Mouth

Lizards Mouth Hike places to see in santa barbara

Lizard Mount is a beautiful sunset spot 35 minutes from downtown Santa Barbara. There’s no official parking lot, so park on the side of the road. If you hit the gun range, you’ve gone too far. The hike is mostly flat for .33 of a mile. Once you’re on the rocks, you’ll have to create your route to the “Lizards Mount” area.

Totally one of the things to do in Santa Barbara at sunset.

13. See the Santa Barbara Courthouse

Make sure to check out the great architecture at the Santa Barbara Courthouse.

I’ve only been to a few courthouses in my days, but this one  has to be one of the most beautiful. It’s on my route to the gym and seemingly has a wedding at least 5/7 days a week. It’s gorgeous, and you can walk to the top to get a better view of the city.

14. Enjoy a beach sunset from 1000 Steps Beach

Enjoying a beach sunset is one of my favorite things to do in Santa Barbara.

Another great beach! This one’s over near Shoreline Park, further west and up the coast. Take the stairs down and enjoy walking in the sand and enjoying the views. I highly recommend this place for Santa Barbara photography, especially in the fall and winter months, as the sun will set over the ocean.

15. Hike to Inspiration Point

hike to inspiration point in santa barbara

Inspiration Point is a local favorite and can get busy on the weekends. Get there early, as the parking isn’t great, and you can add another mile or two just on the road. The hike is half on a forest service road and then on a standard mountain trail.

Overall, it’s about 3.7 miles and should take about 90-100 minutes, but it is 100% one of the things to do in Santa Barbara. This is also a phenomenal Santa Barbara photography destination.

16. Take a trek on the Cold Springs Trail

hike cold springs trail

At 2.7 miles, the Cold Springs Trail is just long and hard enough to get the blood pumping without wiping you out. Before climbing up for ocean views, this loop follows a creek for a while. The trailhead is in Montecito and a mile from the Royal Couple’s house. (Fun Fact.)

If you’re looking for a more challenging hike, keep going up and summit Montecito Peak. It’s eight miles round trip with about 2,400 feet of elevation gain. I’d suggest starting before 9 am to beat the heat.

We did the loop multiple times, and it was one of our favorite things to do in Santa Barbara.

17. Walk Chase Palm Park

One of the things to do in santa barbara is visit chase palm park for sunset!

Run. Walk. Bike. Yoga. Play with your dog. Chase Palm Park offers all of this right next to East Beach. So when you visit Santa Barbara, make sure to stop here too.

18. Enjoy the Santa Barbara Harbor

is santa barbara nice to visit

There are few things more soothing than soaking in the calm waters of a harbor. This is a great place to go if you have young kids who love watching boats come in and out. You can also turn this into a two-mile walk by walking around the harbor and getting next to the ocean.

You’ll have great views of the Wharf and the mountains behind it. Additionally, keep an eye out for local wildlife!

Is a trip to Santa Barbara worth it?

Let’s just get this out of the way. 100% yes. It’s one of my favorite places I’ve ever been to. Even better, I had the amazing opportunity to live there for one year, and the ridiculously beautiful weather will always call me back!

You will love your time here and enjoy all the things to do in Santa Barbara.

Where to stay in Santa Barbara

The beauty of Santa Barbara is you’re almost always within five minutes of the ocean. It’s one of the selling points of this beautiful destination. The best places to stay are down by the water, on the ocean side of the train tracks.

Furthermore, there are some very high-end resorts with fantastic views!

8 Fabulous Things To Do In Beautiful Santa Barbara, California

is santa barbara nice to visit

  • Destinations
  • Santa Barbara
  • United States

Spanish-Moorish architecture, the Pacific Ocean, and the Santa Ynez mountains define the beauty of Santa Barbara, located just an hour and a half north of Los Angeles, California. This charming coastal city with a laid-back ambiance entices visitors to enjoy the sandy beaches, museums, galleries, fine dining, and wine tasting. From the moment you take a breath of fresh salty air or stroll storied State Street, you’ll understand why it’s often referred to as the American Riviera.

Heading to Santa Barbara, California? Book a stay at one of the best boutique hotels in Santa Barbara.

My trip was partly sponsored by Visit Santa Barbara.

Santa Barbara Harbor

1. Santa Barbara Harbor & Stearns Wharf

Miles of sandy beach and surf beckon visitors to Santa Barbara. Surfing, swimming, and working on a tan are all part of the fun, but Santa Barbara has a lot more to offer. Head to the harbor to catch a whale-watching excursion, rent a sailboat; go kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or rent jet skis, fishing charters, and more. Almost all water sports and rentals are going to leave from the harbor or Stearns Wharf.

The Santa Barbara Harbor is also a lovely spot to take a walk along the breakwater, admire thousands of yachts, relax over a waterside drink, or dine with a view.

Santa Barbara Water Taxi

For a fun and affordable narrated tour around the harbor, take the Lil Toot Water taxi between the Santa Barbara Harbour and Stearns Wharf. Rides are one-way only and are on a first-come-first-served basis. Lil Toot serves the public on weekends but is available for private rentals during the week.

Brophy Brothers

Brophy Brothers is a perennial favorite with both locals and visitors to Santa Barbara. Take a seat at the bar and soak up the view of the harbor, while chatting with whoever is sitting next to you, though there is table seating too. Brophy’s is always crowded so prepare to wait for a table. Order one of their signature Bloody Marys with oysters on the half shell. The ceviche is also a solid choice.

Pro Tip: If you’re staying near the beach, leave your car at your hotel and walk to the harbor.

Stearns Wharf

2. Stearns Wharf

The most visited tourist attraction in Santa Barbara, Stearns Wharf has had a tumultuous history, imperiled by many traumatic events, both natural and manmade. The oldest working wooden wharf in California, a walk along the wharf comes with fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez mountains.

You’ll find a variety of restaurants, wine-tasting rooms, and tourist shops. Enjoy an ice cream from The Great Pacific Ice Cream Co . while strolling the wharf and don’t miss the dolphin sculpture, which marks the entrance to the wharf and is a popular spot for photographs.

Pro Tip: Every Sunday the Santa Barbara Arts and Crafts Show lines Cabrillo Boulevard from Stearns Wharf to East Beach. The show features 200 local artists working in every medium imaginable from jewelry making to painting, to ceramics, and digital art. I always attend this show if I’m in town on a weekend and never fail to find something to bring home.

Leadbetter Beach

Hendry’s Beach

Hendry’s is also known as Arroyo Burro Beach Park. It’s a lovely sheltered beach and you can walk for miles, which many people do with their dogs. Hendry’s has a grassy area with picnic tables and barbecue grills, and there’s a place to rinse your feet after a walk in the sand.

I usually go to Hendry’s to eat brunch at the Boathouse At Hendry’s Beach. It’s casual but the food is fantastic. There’s usually a wait but that allows you time to work up an appetite with a  nice walk on the beach. Try the huevos rancheros.

Pro Tip: Parking is very limited, so if you plan to dine there, arrive early.

Leadbetter Beach

Leadbetter is just south of the harbor. It’s a wide sandy beach with tall palm trees, volleyball nets, picnic tables, grills, and public restrooms. There’s also a café called Shoreline Cafe where you can eat lunch and dinner.

Pro Tip: The Santa Barbara visitor’s center has three locations and one is just a stone’s throw from Stearns Wharf at the intersection of Garden Street and Cabrillo Boulevard.

4. State Street Promenade

State Street cuts through the heart of Santa Barbara for ten blocks and runs to Stearns Wharf. It’s the perfect place to wander in and out of unique shops like Lewis and Clark . You can also visit galleries, stop for a coffee or a bite, and go wine tasting at one of the tasting rooms located in El Paseo. Part of the street has been closed since 2020 allowing restaurants to expand their outdoor dining options. Upper State Street is home to the historic Granada Theater, a beautiful venue for the performing arts. Check in advance to see who or what is on.

Pro Tip: Be sure to wander down the many side streets and alleys off State Street where you’ll discover pretty fountains and hidden courtyards.

5. Santa Barbara Museum Of Art

The Santa Barbara Museum of Art opened in 1941, in a building that had been a post office. The collection includes textiles, photography, ceramics, prints, paintings, and ceremonial art. A recent renovation includes expanded galleries and the Luddington Court, a captivating introduction to the wonderful museum. We especially enjoyed the photography exhibition and paintings included some of the most notable names in art history.

6. The Santa Barbara County Courthouse

Across the street from the Santa Barbara Museum of Art is the Santa Barbara County Courthouse, a major landmark in a city known for its architecture. The Spanish-Moorish style, colorful tiles, and wrought iron work make the courthouse a popular place for photo shoots, and the sunken gardens are prime for romantic weddings.

Completed in 1929, it is a working courthouse but visitors are welcome to explore. Be sure to visit the bell tower for sweeping views of Santa Barbara. In the summer there are movies, concerts, and various events on the lawn.

Mission Santa Barbara

7. Old Mission Santa Barbara

Often referred to as the Queen of the California Missions, this is certainly one of the prettiest missions with its signature rose gardens and fountain. The Old Mission Santa Barbara was established on the feast day of St. Barbara in 1786 by Franciscan Friars. One of twenty-one missions established in California, it is the only mission that has been under the continuous guidance of the Franciscans since it was founded.

There’s an expansive lawn in front and you’ll often find visitors camped out there enjoying a bit of sun. The mission is still active and may close at times for services and funerals. Be sure to check the website for hours. You can also take a self-guided tour.

8. Wine Tasting

When I first became a regular visitor to Santa Barbara, we always went wine tasting in Santa Ynez, forty minutes away. Today there are over 20 tasting rooms in Santa Barbara representing some of the best producers in the area for excellent pinot noir, chardonnay, sparkling wines, and more. You no longer need to drive to Santa Ynez, you can simply follow Santa Barbara’s Urban Wine Trail to one of the many excellent tasting rooms.

The Presidio

The Presidio (which means fort in Spanish) is the heart of old Santa Barbara. El Paseo, California’s first shopping center is located in this neighborhood. Tucked away in the many side streets are several tasting rooms, each with its own charm and wine style. Grassini, Jamie Slone, and Au Bon Climat are all located in El Paseo. Kunin Wines is just a block away. While you’re sipping fine wine, admire the Spanish architecture and learn the history of Santa Barbara.

Grassini Family Vineyards

Grassini Family Vineyards specializes in Bordeaux varietals, especially cabernet sauvignon and sauvignon blanc. The tasting room is cozy and it’s a good idea to reserve a table. Try the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and chocolate pairing.

Au Bon Climat

Au Bon Climat is known for its pinot noir and chardonnay and keeps an extensive library collection. Founder, the late Jim Clendenen, is largely responsible for putting Santa Barbara County wines on the map. Anything you try here will be excellent, but of course you must try one of the outstanding bottlings of pinot noir.

Kunin Wines

Kunin Wines is a small production winery making Rhone-style wines plus zinfandel, syrah, and viognier. The indoor tasting room can be loud when it’s full but if the weather is nice, there’s an outdoor patio. Kunin also has a tasting room in the Funk Zone. Try the 2019 Grenache Alisos Vineyards.

La Paloma Café

For a taste of historic Santa Barbara head to La Paloma Café , just a few blocks off State Street in the Presidio. The original stucco building opened in 1915 as an Italian bakery. In 1940 it opened as La Paloma Café and was an instant success.

Enter through the bar downstairs and stop to admire the circa 1941 mural above the bar and the original barstools, now recovered with cowhide. The food is casual, the portions are ample and delicious. Try a Mezcalita cocktail if you like smokey flavors or the hibiscus margarita for something more refreshing. We ate the pork shoulder carnitas, which had a complimentary smokiness with the mezcal… a good pairing.

Where To Stay

The Eagle Inn is an attractive bed and breakfast property that looks like it might have been someone’s home. This is an excellent location if you want to stay close to the beach in a quiet area.

The Eagle Inn has a variety of king and queen rooms, some with in-room spa tubs and balconies. If you need more space you can book a casita, which is like a small condo with a private entrance. Room amenities include Wi-Fi, a coffee maker, a fridge, a complimentary refillable water bottle, wine glasses, and a corkscrew. Note that the Eagle Inn is pretty low-fi and not all rooms have USB ports. Bikes are available and there is plenty of free, off-street parking. A convenient and affordable location for a beach holiday.

Ramada By Wyndham

Ramada By Wyndham is an older property that has been tastefully updated. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. They have high-speed Wi-Fi, a microwave, coffee makers, and a fridge. Most rooms have a full-size balcony as well and some face a pretty inner courtyard. There’s also a solar-heated pool and hot tub.

Located just off of Highway 1, the address is Santa Barbara but you’re basically in Goleta, home to the University of Santa Barbara. It’s only a five to ten-minute drive to Santa Barbara Harbor. The Ramada offers a Santa Barbara Value Pass with discounts on all sorts of activities like golf and wine tasting.

Santa Barbara is a beautiful destination that’s convenient to the big city (Los Angeles) but feels worlds away. Anyone who enjoys nature and fine food and wine in a casual setting will love Santa Barbara.

15. Hiking in Santa Barbara

santa barbara hikes

There are some unique hikes in Santa Barbara . There’s several great trails in the area, and each has their own specific look to them that makes each hike different than the rest. There are mountain trails, trails along the coast, and waterfall trails.

For a trail to a waterfall, try the Seven Falls trail. It’s a moderate difficulty hike, and you should probably pack good hiking shoes if you’re planning on taking this trail. It’s 2.5 miles round trip, and at the end you get a view of the Seven Falls waterfall.

Another popular hike in the area is the hike to Inspiration Point. The great part about this one is that there are multiple ways to get there depending on the length of hike that you want. You can take San Roque road to the Jesusita Trail for about 8 miles round trip and it takes you by the ocean for some great views. The other way is to take Tunnel Road to Jesusita Trail for a 3.75 mile hike, but it doesn’t have the same views as the longer hike.

16. Fishing off Stearns Wharf

is santa barbara nice to visit

In the Santa Barbara harbor is Stearns Wharf, and it’s construction was completed in 1872. Nowadays there’s plenty of things to do, such as taking a Water Taxi, or getting some food on the dock.

But one of the cooler experiences on the wharf is to cast your line off the edge and try your hand at catching some fish while you’re there. If you head to Stearn’s Wharf Bait and Tackle , they’ll get you all set up with rental fishing poles and bait.

17. Whale Watching

A whale breaching

If you’re looking to see some marine life on the waters outside Santa Barbara, whale watching is the adventure for you. The best times to visit for whale watching are late spring to early fall, when the waters are warmer are there will be whales passing through. You may also see dolphins in the water along with whales and possibly other sea life.

There are several companies you can use to go on whale watching tours, such as The Sunset Kidd yacht or Captain Jack Tours . But if boats aren’t your thing, there’s plenty of places along the coast that give you good vantage points. Many of the trails that hug the coastal bluffs will allow you to whale watch from land.

18. Santa Barbara Trolley Tour

The Santa Barbara Trolley Company has been providing tours of the city for over 30 years, and with a single ride you’ll see lots of the hot spots of Santa Barbara in one go. Each trolley seats about 32 people, and the tours last for about an hour and a half. There’s 3 tour times per day, so you have lots of opportunity to go.

» Book a 90 minute trolley tour here .

19. Dine Out

Rudy's burrito

Santa Barbara is well known for its Mexican food. I recommend a burrito from Rudy’s Mexican Restaurant (pictured above).

Make a reservation for dinner at The Lark (131 Anacapa St.). It’s right next to the Funk Zone, so there’s not too much walking required. I am always impressed with the meal, as well as the atmosphere. It’s just something special.

If you can’t get in to The Lark, other options that I really like are Black Sheep (26 East Ortega Street). It’s just a block off State Street and has a really solid local menu, plus a veggie and non-veggie tasting menu.

After dinner, if you haven’t had enough sweets for the day, head over to McConnell’s Ice Cream to join the line waiting for a scoop of their locally made ice cream that everyone loves so much.

20. Santa Barbara Maritime Museum

To learn more about the city’s history and the history of the water that surrounds it, The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is a great place. They have multiple on-going exhibits, as well as new exhibits and lectures always rotating into the museum.

If you’re interested in the sea, whales, boats, and the history of the waters of Santa Barbara this will be the perfect place for you. And it’s for a great price, tickets are only 8$ for adults.

21. Wine Tasting in Paseo

Paseo

Santa Barbara has a serious wine culture. With many wineries, vineyards, and restaurants with great wine lists, if you’re a fan of wine you’re going to have a blast in Santa Barbara. Found in the Presidio Neighborhood is the El Paseo wine collective , a group of historic buildings with Spanish style courtyards and side streets that make a very relaxed energy and experience.

El Paseo is a group of six different tasting rooms, including Jamie Sloan Wines, Grassini, and Au Bon Climat, that are all within a small area, making it super easy to hop between the different rooms and get a good variety of wines. There’s also several other wineries in the area that you can also go to, and El Paseo can be a great place to start.

22. Casa de La Guerra

Located in the Presidio Neighborhood, this historical building was built by Jose de la Guerra between 1818 and 1828. Now the museum is dedicated to the La Guerra family and the architectural history of the building itself. During the Mexican period of Santa Barbara, Casa de La Guerra was the social, cultural, and political center of the city.

ln the museum you can learn about the history of the family, Jose de la Guerra’s enterprises and political undertakings, and many other things. Multiple rooms are dedicated to rotating exhibits of art and history.

23. McConnell’s Ice Cream

McConnell's Ice Cream

McConnell’s Ice Cream is a fine ice cream brand with their roots in Santa Barbara. They’re committed to using simple, high quality ingredients that make their ice cream super creamy and delicious.

The Old Dairy, the original dairy company that created McConnell’s Ice Cream, was one of the first 10 family-owned dairies in the area. Now you can enjoy their flavors at their shop, or get their ice cream delivered to you in certain areas. My favorite is the Salted Caramel Chip. It’s incredible.

24. Natural History Museum

The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History has lots of exhibits that showcases the regions natural history. Birds, insects, paleontology marine life, and mammals are the stars of some of the exhibits. You can also find information about the Native Americans of the area, and their culture and history.

This museum has rotating exhibits, so there’s always something new and exciting to see. There’s two locations in Santa Barbara, one for the Museum of Natural History and one for the sea center of the museum that looks more in depth on marine life in the area.

25. Electric Bike Tour

We also love going on a Santa Barbara bike tour . The typical tour can be done in the morning or afternoon, lasts about 2.5 hours, and takes you around to all the top sights and along the beach on a comfortable beach cruisers. They limit numbers to just 5, so it’s easy and fun.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SANTA BARBARA

Is parking a problem in santa barbara.

Parking isn’t terrible in downtown Santa Barbara, except on busy weekends. You can find street parking, if you look for it. There are also a ton of beach parking lots. On the street, you’ll pay from to 9am to 6pm every day, but it’s free after that.

Some spots are metered with limited time, some are free with limited time during the day. Most hotels will charge anywhere from $25 to $45 a night for parking.

What are some good wineries in Santa Barbara?

There are a ton of great winery tasting rooms in downtown Santa Barbara in the Funk Zone and Paseo Nuevo shopping center. Our favorites are Riverbench and Pali Wine Co in the Funk Zone; Happy Canyon and Jamie Slone in Paseo Nuevo.

Outside of Santa Barbara, we like to visit Solvang, Los Olivos, and the Foxen Canyon Wine trail for wine tasting, especially at E11even, Bien Nacito Winery, and SamSara in Los Olivos, and Zaca Mesa and Riverbench up in Foxen Canyon.

Is Santa Barbara worth the money?

Yes, Santa Barbara is a very expensive city, especially if you want to stay in 4- to 5-star hotels or right on the beach. Whether that expense is worth it to you is very subjective. I feel that Santa Barbara is definitely worth a visit, though you don’t necessarily need to stay in the expensive downtown hotels.

The town has a lovely setting along the California Coast with beautiful surrounding mountains. The architecture is California Spanish Revival and there is year-round foliage of natural plants, flowers, and cactus to enjoy. If you like wine tasting, some of the best central coast wineries are located nearby.

Travel Planning Guide

🚙💨  Where should I book my rental car?

Renting a car is one of the best ways to get around in California, no matter where you’re visiting. Public transportation can only get your so far, even in big cities. I always rent with  Discover Cars , which checks the prices of all major rental car companies, so you get the best rates.

🛌  What’s the best way to book my accommodations?

For hotels and vacation rentals,  Booking.com or Expedia.com  are the best sites, but you can also book through TripAdvisor. If you’re considering renting a house instead, don’t forget to also check  VRBO , which is often cheaper than Airbnb.

🧳  What do I pack for California?

Head to the our California Packing List or Disneyland Packing List  to get all the info on packing.

✈️  What’s the best site to buy flights to California?

For finding cheap California flights from around the world, I recommend  Skyscanner . I’ve also had pretty good luck with Kayak.com .

First-Time Visitor’s Guide to Santa Barbara

  • by HANA-LEE SEDGWICK

Mark Weber

Located along the Central Coast between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains, Santa Barbara is inarguably one of the most beautiful places on the West Coast. But beyond the picturesque scenery and stunning ocean views, Santa Barbara captivates with its historical charm, luxury accommodations, outdoor activities, and thriving wine and food scene worth exploring. Our guide to Santa Barbara breaks down everything you’ll want to experience during your first time visiting this idyllic coastal paradise.

Getting There

Known as The American Riviera, Santa Barbara is situated on a south-facing stretch of coastline along the Central Coast, roughly two hours north of Los Angeles and five hours south of San Francisco. If not traveling by car, Santa Barbara is accessible by Amtrak train, which makes stops in downtown Santa Barbara and the neighboring communities of Carpinteria and Goleta, as well as via the Santa Barbara Airport — a quaint (and super charming) airport that partners with seven different airlines.

Old Mission Santa Barbara | Jay Sinclair

Right off of State Street, near the ocean, is what is known as The Funk Zone neighborhood. What was once an abandoned warehouse district is now a popular place to get your drink on, thanks to the two dozen tasting rooms and several breweries all within walking distance. At The Valley Project , you’ll find a minimalist tasting room with an impressive focal point: a floor-to-ceiling chalk art mural depicting Santa Barbara County’s winegrowing areas. Acquaint yourself with the lay of the land as you taste through the small-lot wines, then head next door to Pali Wine Co. , known for chardonnay, pinot noir, and their line of natural wines under the label, Neighborhood. Nearby, Riverbench Winery ‘s Santa Barbara tasting room specializes in flights of sparkling wine, and is next door to Santa Barbara’s first distillery, Cutler’s Artisan Spirits . Down the street, Municipal Winemakers offers a funky, retro vibe in which to enjoy a bottle or tasting. It’s the sister winery of Potek , an urban winery and tasting room located at The Mill .

Best Things to do in Santa Barbara

With views of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains, Santa Barbara is the perfect place for an outdoor adventure. The Top 15 Things to Do in Santa Barbara, CA

1. climb the clock tower at the santa barbara county courthouse.

Unique Things to do in Santa Barbara, California: Santa Barbara County Courthouse

After much of the city was ruined by the 1925 earthquake, the Santa Barbara County Courthouse was completed in 1929, occupying a full square block of the downtown area. Frequently called the most beautiful government building in the United Space, the space is surrounded by lavish gardens, including the beautiful Sunken Garden, where the 1872 courthouse once stood.

Best Things to do in Santa Barbara, California: Santa Barbara County Courthouse

Visiting the Santa Barbara County Courthouse is one of the best things to do in Santa Barbara if you’re a history and art lover. Take a seat by the peaceful Spirit of the Ocean statue, and then head inside to the Mural Room, an ornately decorated room with four murals depicting Santa Barbara’s Chumash, Spanish, Mexican, and immigrant cultures. Then, head up to the 85-foot El Mirador clock tower for an unforgettable view of the city and the natural beauty surrounding it.

2. Visit El Presidio de Santa Barbara

Fun Things to do in Santa Barbara, California: El Presidio de Santa Barbara

If you’re a history fan, El Presidio de Santa Barbara belongs on any list of must-do things in Santa Barbara. This historic park preserves the site of the last four military outposts built by the Spanish along the coast of Alta California. Two buildings of the original Presidio have been restored, with additional reconstructions and archaeological excavations being ongoing.

You’ll find four presidios built by Spain throughout California: Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Diego, and San Francisco. All of them played a vital role in protecting the missions and settlers from attack and guarding the country against invaders. The Santa Barbara Presidio was both a military and government headquarters.

Currently, you’ll find two remaining original sections of the Presidio. The El Cuartel was a family residence of the soldier assigned to guard the western gate. It’s the oldest building in Santa Barbara and the second-oldest in all of California. The other building is the Canedo Adobe, named for another Presidio soldier to whom the Presidio was deeded when it became inactive.

Inside the Presidio, you’ll now also find the Buenaventura Pico Abode, an example of a Mexican-period abode built around 1830. You’ll also discover the Rochίn Adobe, an example of an American-period abode.

3. Explore the Beauty of Lotusland

Unique Things to do in Santa Barbara, California: Lotusland

Lotusland is one of the most unique things to do in Santa Barbara and a can’t-miss stop if you love being at one with nature. Located just outside the city in Montecito, Lotusland is a 37-acre estate once owned by opera singer and socialite Madame Ganna Walska. She spent 43 years transforming it into a lush paradise filled with extraordinary botanical treasures like water lilies, euphorbias, and, of course, lotuses.

Lotusland is made up of 25 distinct gardens, each with its own themes, like the Blue Garden, the Japanese Garden, and the Topiary Garden. Throughout the gardens, keep your eyes peeled for beautiful hidden gems, like the Neptune fountain.

Cool Things to do in Santa Barbara, California: Lotusland

If you’re hoping to see the lotuses in bloom, you should aim to visit in mid-to-late summer. However, with so many plant species here, there is something in bloom all year round. No matter when you visit, be sure to make your tour reservation in advance.

To celebrate the city’s Spanish founders, Santa Barbara honors its heritage every August with the Old Spanish Days Fiesta . This celebration has been going on for nearly a century. 7. Grab a Drink at Cold Spring Tavern

Located 15 miles inland from downtown Santa Barbara, the Cold Spring Tavern was once a stagecoach shop, opening all the way back in 1868. The tavern has since changed hands multiple times, but the structure has stayed the same. Stop by for a bite while you take in the fascinating history of this woodland treasure.

A visit to the Cold Spring Tavern is about more than visiting the tavern itself, though. This land is also home to several other historic buildings. The Road Gang House, once housed by 11 Chinese immigrants who were paving the toll road through the San Marcos Pass, still stands proudly, despite part of the structure being destroyed.

The Ojai Jail, built across from the Road Gang House, was built by Constable Andrew Van Curen in his backyard. Gopherville is actually a series of buildings from an abandoned ghost town, while Blisshaven was once a cook shack.

You can still grab a drink at the Log Cabin Bar, which was once a water bottling plant. And in the Bunkhouse, you can grab a one-of-a-kind find at the Treasures and Trash Gift Shop.

Santa Barbara, California Things to Do: Bart's Books

Located in nearby Ojai, Bart’s Books is a must-do thing to do in the Santa Barbara area if you’re a book lover. As the world’s largest outdoor bookstore, this store hosts a collection of over 130,000 new and used books. You may just find a rare treasure hidden among its stacks.

What started as a few bookcases outside the home of Richard Bartindale, an avid reader who adored the Parisian book carts by the Seine, has become one of the best places to visit near Santa Barbara. 27 Unique Things to Do in Santa Barbara

Unique Things to Do in Santa Barbara, CA

Looking for some unique things to do in Santa Barbara? Here’s my full list!

Of all the places to visit in California, I’ve gotta say Santa Barbara has to be up there. It’s hard not to like a place that sits along the coast and has sunny weather in the 60-70s year round. My friend, Sher , and I stopped in for a few days as part of our coastal road trip, and I think we each agreed it was our favorite stop! For a relatively smaller city, there’s a lot to do from sightseeing to outdoorsy activities. I can see why so many celebrities wind up buying homes here.

Here’s my guide on what we got up to as well as some things I already know I want to do on a future visit!

This trip was in collaboration with Visit Santa Barbara . All opinions are my own .

Quick Tips for Your Santa Barbara Trip

Before I get into all the unique things to do in Santa Barbara, here are some tips to help you when planning your own trip.

If you’re doing a California coastal road trip, Santa Barbara is a great place to drive into! It’s two hours from San Luis Obispo and two hours from LA. Perfect in-between stop as I don’t recommend driving more than 2 hours a day to avoid exhaustion. I will say if you’re driving from LA on a weekend, the traffic looked intense, so leave early. We were driving the opposite way and it just seemed to go on and on .

You can also fly into Santa Barbara if you’re coming from elsewhere! Southwest now flies to SB from Oakland, Las Vegas, and Denver while Alaska Airlines started a new route from San Diego.

Getting Around

Santa Barbara is that nice size where it’s slightly too big to be totally walkable but slightly too small to feel like you want to drive everywhere. After doing my e-bike ride, I wished we’d actually just rented e-bikes for our whole stay! I really liked my experience with Cal Coast Adventures . They’ll bring you the bikes wherever you are, and I find their daily rental prices quite reasonable. Plus if you want that cute bicycle aesthetic, they have a vintage-looking style in the Trek’s Electra Townie Go.

Weather & Packing

I have decided that when it comes to SoCal, your best bet is to not believe anything the weather map app tells you. When we were packing for our trip, it told us SB, LA, and San Diego would be in the 50s-60s for our days. Absolute lies . It’s hot as soon as you cross over into California’s southern region. Santa Barbara is sunny like 300 days of the year, and it was warm even in November! So with that in mind, make sure to have at least some of these things:

  • Sunscreen – my go to at the moment is from La Roche Posay
  • Sunglasses/Hat – remember, it’s going to most likely be sunny on your visit
  • Shorts – I was really, really regretting not having at least one pair of shorts here
  • Sneakers – Good to have for any hiking, walking, or sports. I had my Allbirds
  • A Swimsuit – Especially if you plan on doing anything in the water
  • Comfortable sandals – Also something I was missing! As always, I’m a Birkenstocks fan

When you’re thinking of what to wear, just remember California has a much more relaxed vibe, especially outside of LA and San Francisco. Santa Barbara is mostly an outdoorsy town, so everyone seemed to be in casual wear at the fanciest. Just wear comfortable clothes and dress for the sports you plan on doing!

Hideaway Hotel, Santa Barbara, CA

Where to Stay

As you might guess, Santa Barbara is home to a lot of really cute hotels ranging from boutique to absolute luxury! If you do want to be able to walk a little, I’d stay more towards the main part of town or near the Funk Zone. We stayed at the Hideaway , which has been newly renovated and was really cute. Definitely get a room with a fireplace, especially if you’re doing any water sports! It’ll be nice and cozy when you warm up from the ocean, which is freezing year round. Also do not miss out on their breakfast. It changes everyday and is absolutely delicious. I’m still thinking about the burrito from our first morning!

Unique Things to Do in Santa Barbara (That I Did)

Biking in Santa Barbara, CA

1. Go for a (e)bike ride

Of course this is my very first recommendation. As soon as you arrive in Santa Barbara, have Cal Coast Adventure drop off an e-bike for you. Head towards the waterfront where there’s a great biking and walking path you can follow past Santa Barbara Zoo and the Andree Clark Bird Refuge. If you’re lucky, you might spot a giraffe having his afternoon snack as you bike by!

From there you can bike through Montecito and even on to Summerland. I promise it’s really not that far apart and there’s only one tiny hill. This’ll just give you a lay of the land as you start planning out the rest of your trip and let you stretch your legs a bit after driving or flying in.

2. Grab a coffee and do some window shopping in Montecito

A cute spot to stop on your e-bike ride is Bree’Osh Bakery Cafe in Montecito. The cafe was founded by French couple, so you know they know their way around bread. I liked it so much, I stopped in for a second time on our way out of Santa Barbara!

The road that Bree’Osh is on, Coast Village Rd, is also worth walking or biking a long to do some window shopping. Loads of cute boutiques, restaurants, and storefronts. Another restaurant recommendation we had but couldn’t fit in was Bettina’s for some authentic Italian pizza.

Overlook, Santa Barbara, CA

3. Take in the views from the Winslow-Maxwell Overlook

If you don’t mind another hill on your e-bike ride, head up to the Winslow-Maxwell Overlook by Santa Barbara College for some of the best views overlooking the harbor.

Old Mission Santa Barbara, CA

4. Visit the Mission Santa Barbara

Located more towards the mountains and on the outskirts of town is the beautiful Old Mission Santa Barbara . It was built in 1786 and of the 21 missions originally built, it’s the only one that is still under the guidance of Franciscan friars. While you can visit the museum and gift shop, the best is to simple enjoy the grounds and the exterior architecture. It really is quite beautiful!

Depending on what time you’re visiting, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History is also nearby and may be worth a visit.

City Hall, Santa Barbara, CA

5. Stop into the Santa Barbara County Courthouse

Now, I know typically county courthouses aren’t exactly something you put on a list of must-sees in a new city. However, the Santa Barbara one is really beautiful and worth stopping in to enjoy the Spanish architecture! It was built in 1929 and occupies an entire city block. The whitewashed buildings which feature red tile roofs and semi-surround a sunken garden. We couldn’t explore too much as there was a wedding going on when we visited! If you go at the right time, you can also take the elevator up the El Mirador clock tower for some more scenic views.

Santa Barbara Museum of Fine Arts, CA

6. Enjoy the newly renovated Santa Barbara Museum of Art

There are actually quite a few museums in Santa Barbara that I’d like to visit on a return trip, but this time we could only fit in one. We ultimately chose the Museum of Art after our hotel recommended it as her favorite. Newly renovated, it really is a beautiful museum with multiple exhibitions across two floors. I loved the main area where you can look at all the portraits and use a QR to read more about each one.

Boathouse, Santa Barbara, CA

7. Catch the sunset from Boathouse at Hendry’s Beach

If you’re looking for a good sunset view, plan to get a late lunch or early dinner at the Boathouse at Hendry’s Beach . We didn’t see sunset, but we did get a taste of golden hour towards the end of our lunch. The food is delicious and way more filling than you’ll realize!

After appetizers of steamed black mussels, fried calamari, and tostada ceviche, we were almost too full for our main meals! I got the fish tacos (made with local snapper) as my main, though the apple and walnut salad looked pretty good too.

One thing to try if you they have it is the Santa Barbara uni, a type of sea urchin! It’s a local speciality, but they were out when we ordered.

8. Check out the Funk Zone district

The Funk Zone is a favorite district in Santa Barbara. It covers the area between the ocean and Highway 101 and is full of cool restaurants (one that’s next on this list), cafes, shops, and more. We saw bits of it as we went in and out, but I also think on a return trip it’d be fun to do an art walk to see all the murals!

The Lark, Santa Barbara, CA

9. Get the crispy Brussel sprouts at The Lark

Okay, you should get a lot of food at The Lark when you go, but I really wanted to point out the Brussel sprouts because they were recommended to us, and I’m not sure even that prepared us for how good they were. Looking at the menu, they’re made with sesame, medjool dates, garum, and lime, and I’m probably going to wind up attempting to make a less delicious version of them soon, that’s how good they were!

When you go, I recommend getting one dish from each section (farm, ocean, ranch) and splitting it. Obviously, the Brussel sprouts should be your farm option. We also got the diver scallops (ocean) and buttermilk chicken (ranch), which was deceptively light. They also have two fun mocktail options, and I loved the Bougainvillea one.

La Paloma, Santa Barbara, CA

10. Get a taste of history at La Paloma Cafe

La Paloma got its start all the way back in 1940 as a Mexican restaurant founded by Jennie Luera. For 43 years they served classic Mexican cuisine and lived in the house next door until selling it in 1983. From there it became Paradise Cafe all the way through to 2019 when Acme Hospitality bought the restaurant and wound up deciding to bring back La Paloma in a new way. Luckily for them, Jennie Luera’s granddaughter still owned the building and was on hand to recount stories of her grandparents and the old La Paloma. Today the restaurant takes inspiration from the now blended culture of Santa Barbara and has created dishes that are a blend of Spanish, Mexican, and Chumash.

All I can say is that when you go, go hungry so you can enjoy all the food! Shoutout to our server Bobby for helping us pick dishes and describing them all to us! We started with the La Paloma salad, made from local rose apples and with a hibiscus vinaigrette, Kumiai oysters that had a nice kick with the scallion oil and hot sauce, and some ranch fries, made with scallion dressing and served with queso fresco. Then we decided to split the oak grilled fish of the day (ours was albacore tuna) and I also got a side of their glazed carrots. For dessert we managed squeeze in a Mexican salted chocolate tart made with dulce de leche and raspberry sauce. YUM!

Flor de Maiz, Santa Barbara, CA

11. Try the Oaxacan cuisine at Flor de Maíz

Craving some Mexican? Try Flor de Maíz , which specializes in Oaxacan cuisine! Located along E Cabrillo Blvd, across from the beachfront and Stearns Wharf, Flor de Maíz is the perfect spot for lunch and drinks. Definitely grab a seat outside! We split some homemade lobster and cheese empanadas and then I got the duck taquitos in mole coloradito while Sher got the fish tacos. If you’re unsure of what to get, they have a really helpful photo menu so you can see what the dishes look like.

McConnell's, Santa Barbara, CA

12. Grab an ice cream sandwich from McConnell’s

You know, if only I’d come to Santa Barbara eleven years earlier. I might’ve run into Taylor Swift on her California trip with the subject of her Red album… Apparently they came to McConnell’s for ice cream. Never mind, I was eighteen at the time and it would’ve been in the middle of the school year!

Anyway, potential celebrity run-ins aside, if you stop into one ice cream spot in Santa Barbara, it’s gotta be McConnells. It’s basically been an institution ever since it was first founded in 1949. Couple Gordon and Ernesteen McConnell decided to start an ice cream company that would forgo the fillers, stabilizers, and preservatives other companies were using to make their ice cream from scratch.

Get the ice cream sandwich for something truly delicious! I can’t remember the exact combo I got, but both cookie and ice cream included sea salt.

Flor de Maiz, Santa Barbara, CA

13. Sample all the mocktails and cocktails in SB

Over all, Santa Barbara is home to a bunch of really cool bars, wineries, and breweries! Almost every place has an extensive list of drinks and many include great mocktails for nondrinkers. We didn’t go to a ton, but I can say I enjoyed the ones I had a Flor de Maiz, The Lark, and La Paloma Cafe. If you don’t see any on the menu, just ask your server and they’ll be able to give tell you your options! For even more ideas, check this Santa Barbara cocktail guide .

Lotusland, Summerland, Santa Barbara, CA

14. Spend the morning in the Ganna Walska Lotusland

Lotusland is easily one of the most unique things to do in Santa Barbara! As it’s known now first came about in 1941 when Polish opera singer Ganna Walska purchased it. She was inspired to purchase the property during a six-week trip to California with her then husband, Theos Bernard.

Renaming it Tibetland, she intended to use it as a retreat for Tibetan monks. However wartime visa issues and a divorce from her husband in 1946 led her instead to change the name again to Lotusland and spend the rest of her years cultivating the many gardens you see today.

It really is such a gorgeous place and so worth the visit! Remember to reserve in advance and know tickets are timed. I recommend opting for the morning as it can get pretty hot by midday! When you go, you can either opt for an extensively guided tour or walk around yourself and chat with the many guides around the property.

Red Kettle Coffee, Summerland, Santa Barbara, CA

15. Get a coffee and do some antiquing in Summerland

Once you’ve finished at Lotusland, go down into the main part of Summerland. You can gawk at the price tags while antiquing and grab a coffee at the very cute Red Kettle Coffee , recognizable by the gnome statue hanging out outside. Both their coffee and their teas are made locally and they also sell various products from local small businesses in their cafe. If you’re an iced chai latte fan, don’t miss it here!

Summerland Beach, Santa Barbara, CA

16. Enjoy Summerland Beach

Right across the main road from Summerland’s main town road is its beach. Actually if you’re driving, I’d park at Lookout Park which overlooks Summerland Beach and just walk into town from there (it’s all of 5 minutes on foot). It’s a quiet, pretty beach area at least when we went. Good if you need an afternoon of sunbathing and relaxing!

Field + Fort, Summerland, Santa Barbara, CA

17. Grab lunch at Field + Fort

If you’re headed to LA next, then be sure to stop off at Field + Fort for a quick lunch before continuing south. Likewise stop here first if you’re coming from LA! It’s located a bit towards the end of Summerland town and is half an elevated home good store and half a restaurant with outdoor seating. Cannot recommend the market greens salad enough! Get it with the chicken salad on top and use the carrot ginger vinaigrette liberally .

18. Say hi to all the cute dogs!

California as a whole has to be on the most dog-friendly places I’ve ever been and Santa Barbara one of the most dog-friendly in the state. I don’t think I saw a single place where dogs weren’t allowed in some form! If you’re a dog person, you’re going to love seeing all the cute, happy pooches on their walks or hanging out at their owners’ feet. I think my favorite was seeing the dog wash station at Lookout Park.

More Unique Things to Do in Santa Barbara that are on My List for Next Time

19. visit channel islands national park.

I definitely want to check out the Channel Islands on a return trip. They’re an eight-island archipelago split between Santa Barbara, Ventura, and LA counties. Of those eight islands, five make up the National Park including Anacapa, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, San Miguel, and Santa Rosa.

There’s a ton to do from island hopping to camping to hiking to scuba and more, and the islands are known as the “Galapagos of the North” because of their unique ecosystems.

20. Take advantage of all the water sports in Santa Barbara

As you might guess from a coastal city with 300+ days of sunshine… Santa Barbara is home to a ton of water sports! While I was doing my bike ride, Sher was actually taking surfing lessons with Surf Happens . After a disastrous turn attempting SUP in Da Nang, I decided to forgo anything that required me to try to stand up on a board in the freezing Pacific Ocean. However, next time I think it’d be fun to do some kayaking.

Stearns Wharf, Santa Barbara, CA

21. Explore Stearns Wharf

We only saw from the beach, but if you want to visit, Stearns Wharf has been a Santa Barbara landmark since 1872. Today there are quite a few restaurants and speciality shops, and the one I want to visit is the Shellfish Company !

22. Stroll around the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden

If you want even more nature, then you’ll enjoy the 78-acres of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden . Definitely would want to do one of its trails in the future and enjoy more the scenery!

23. Visit more of Santa Barbara’s museums

Like I said above, I’m planning on visiting more museums on a return trip! Here are some on my list:

  • Museum of Natural History – near the Old Mission and home to over 3.5 million specimens
  • Historical Museum – goes into over 500 years of history Santa Barbara history
  • MOXI, the Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation – cool museum for science, technology, and the arts
  • Santa Barbara Maritime Museum – cool place to learn about the exploration history of the Santa Barbara Channel

24. Try the Mexican at La Super-Rica Taqueria

One specific spot I wanted to try, but wasn’t really close to anything else we were doing, was the Mexican at the no frills La Super-Rica Taqueria . Julia Childs herself named it as one of her favorite places to eat and the photos look amazing. Definitely have to try the Super-Rica Especial.

Rosewood Miramar Beach, Santa Barbara, CA

25. Get a pool pass for Rosewood Miramar Beach

Rosewood Miramar Beach is probably one of the most luxe places to stay in Santa Barbara. Situated in Montecito, you wouldn’t believe it surrounds a train track and is off a freeway. Seriously once you step through the lobby, the freeway noise magically disappears. At well over $1,000 a night, it’s probably not in most people’s budgets.

However, you can purchase a day pass that includes the Manor pool, Cabana pool, access to the Cabana bar, Bocce ball, and complimentary wifi. You could also upgrade to a Manor Cabana or Adult Cabana as well. Not too shabby a way to relax for the day, especially if you’re spending your other days fitting in a bunch of outdoor activities.

26. Visit some wineries

I know I don’t drink, but I do love visiting wineries and hearing about how each one makes its wine as well as its history. As you might guess – Santa Barbara has its own urban wine trail to help guide you!

27. Visit nearby Solvang

Want to feel like you’re in Denmark but with sunny Socal weather? Then check out Solvang in the Santa Ynez Valley. I’ve actually been wanting to visit for a while, but it just didn’t fit into this road trip. It’s only a 40ish minute drive from Santa Barbara, so next time I think I’d carve out a day for it!

And those are all the most unique things to do in Santa Barbara! Anything to add? I feel like I’m going to need to plan a week here next time I go to fit in all I want to do !

So glad to find your webpage. Tons of great tips for SB! Thanks! I wonder if the bikes can be delivered to the airport and then no rental needed? I’ll ask. The food and places to eat look amazing. Thanks for the names. Saves a ton of time finding non tourist places with clean food.

Oh interesting; let me know what you find on the bike rentals at the airport! And yess, the food was so good. If you can ONLY do one, it’s gotta be The Lark. The whole meal lives in my mind rent free.

Best Times To Visit Santa Barbara

The best time to visit Santa Barbara is from March to May or from September to November. Temperatures are fairly mild year-round, hovering in the 60s and 70s, but traveling in early spring or fall ensures you won't be fighting crowds and rates will be less expensive. Summer welcomes most of the city's annual events and it's also peak season if you're looking for a beach vacation, but you'll have to contend with more crowds. If you're traveling during the winter months, make sure to pack an umbrella because Santa Barbara sees most of its rainfall between December and February. No matter when you decide to visit, pack layers as the morning and late evening temperatures tend to be much cooler than the daytime highs.

When to visit Santa Barbara: the best weather and the liveliest events

Coastal perfection – in the form of a Mediterranean-esque climate, clusters of palm trees, and the looming Santa Ynez Mountains beyond the city skyline – is a year-round constant in Santa Barbara .

But, depending on the type of California escapade you seek, there are optimal times for planning it. Whether you are a deal hawk looking to maximize a trip budget, a festival-lover seeking a stretch of uniquely Santa Barbara gatherings, or a sun-seeker looking to escape cooler climes, the time of year you land on can make all the difference.

This month-by-month guide to events in Santa Barbara can help you time your visit perfectly.

Grab yourself a bargain during low season from December to February

Don’t count on a white snowy winter in Santa Barbara, folks. But, for white sand beach bliss without the crowds, the December to February timeframe is it. High temperatures rarely crawl out of the 60ºFs and lows have been known to hover in the low 40ºFs. January and February are also, historically, the town’s rainiest months. You’ll see Santa Barbarans all bundled up, but perhaps the hot hotel deals will keep you feeling cozy? The holiday warmth is also omnipresent in December leading into January, with the Santa Barbara Parade of Lights and open-air Christmas light tours aboard the Santa Barbara Trolley being annual staples. Fans of whale watching will find gray whale numbers at their peak between January and March as they move northward along the coast.

A shot of a surfer carrying a board down wooden steps to the ocean

Enjoy outdoor adventures in the sunshine during shoulder seasons (March to June and September to November)

For lovers of the in-between, you will find solace in Santa Barbara’s shoulder seasons. Not too hot and not too cold, these are the months you’ll want to stroll down State Street, bike along the beach, and winery hop that much more. It’s easy to be fooled by the pleasantness of these months, but you’ll still want to pack your sunscreen during the day and a jacket at night. To experience Santa Barbara’s spring in full bloom, the Santa Barbara Vintners Spring Festival remains a must for wine lovers and visitors alike.

High season in July and August brings high temperatures and prices

With typical year-round highs hovering in the low-60s to upper-70ºF range, Santa Barbara’s temperatures are as pleasant as its laid-back locals. But, with an uptick in temps in the months of July and August (highs just below 80ºF), there is also a noticeable increase in hotel prices as well as visitors.

The masses flock here during summer’s peak for good reasons. This is the time of the year when wetsuits are not an immediate necessity for taking a swim/surf/kayak in the Santa Barbara Channel. Water temps are at their peak in August – in the lower 60s – upwards of 10ºF warmer than the lows of March and April. Adding that much more sizzle to the mix, July/August is typically the time for Santa Barbara’s most beloved annual celebration, the Old Spanish Days Fiesta.

January is one of Santa Barbara's coldest months

By Santa Barbara standards, the year typically kicks off on a crisp note with high temperatures in the low 60ºFs. To escape the cooler temps – especially at night – a show at the Granada Theatre keeps spirits warm. Key events: New Year’s Day Polar Dip, Martin Luther King, Jr Birthday Celebration.

February means rain and beautiful sunsets

To take that Valentine’s date to the next level, hit the beach with a jacket for a Santa Barbara sunset. The pops of color are arguably best in February as cooler temps begin their exit. This is also the city’s rainiest month, so keep an eye on the weather forecast. Key events: Black History Month at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum.

Flowers in bloom in pinks and yellows in the garden of a Spanish-style church building

March brings blooms as spring arrives

Spring literally blossoms before your eyes, with purple jacarandas lining State Street and the International Orchid Show taking center stage. Speaking of stage, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival – which attracts A-list celebs – is always a town-wide spectacle. Key events: Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Santa Barbara International Orchid Show.

April's temperatures keep on climbing

The temperatures just keep climbing toward even more pleasant status. The Santa Barbara Bowl opens its season – which runs through October – always a winning spot to take in a show and the fresh air. Key events: Santa Barbara Earth Day Celebration, Lucidity Festival.

May is the perfect time for wine

There is never a bad time for wine in Santa Barbara. However, with the Santa Barbara Vintners Festival and an end-of-spring climate, many argue that May is the best time. Key events: Santa Barbara Restaurant Week, The I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival, Santa Barbara Vintners Festival.

Lots of people gathered in groups, sitting on picnic blankets and relaxing at an outdoors event

June is when it starts to get crowded

Summer kicks off – literally with a solstice celebration. The crowds visibly begin to grow along the town’s beach and State Street arteries. Key events: Santa Barbara Wine + Food Festival, Santa Barbara Summer Solstice Celebration and Parade.

July is busy with lots of great events

Loaded with festivals and fireworks, this is the peak of summer tourism and annual activities. Key events: California Wine Festival, Santa Barbara French Festival, Santa Barbara Greek Festival, July 4th Fireworks at West Beach.

August is party time

In 2022, August's mantra is “Viva La Fiesta!” as Santa Barbara’s cultural spectacle – the Old Spanish Days Fiesta – spills into the street with a parade, dancing, and related events for days. Key events: Old Spanish Days Fiesta, Santa Barbara Jewish Film Festival, Pacific Pride Festival

September may be the start of fall, but it's still warm

While fall begins, the summer temperature-bliss lingers. With cold beer and sizzling barbecue, the California Brew & BBQ Festival strikes the perfect chord for September. Key events: Santa Barbara Sea Glass & Ocean Arts Festival, California Brew & BBQ Festival.

October is when the Santa Ana winds blow their hardest

Santa Ana winds typically peak in Santa Barbara in October. So, hold on to your hats and, on the occasion of a very rare rainy day, your umbrella, too. Key events: Santa Barbara Harbor & Seafood Festival.

November marks the start of the chillier weather

High temperatures finally and consistently dip below 70 degrees. Many locals stay warm by signing up for the annual half marathon. Key events: Santa Barbara Half Marathon.

December is full of festive spirit

With lights draping palm trees, main streets and some over-the-top, decor-loving residences, the holiday spirit is pervasive all month long. Key events: Holiday Zoo at Santa Barbara Zoo, Trolley of Lights Tour, Parade of Lights, Annual Downtown Holiday Parade.

The Best Time to Visit Santa Barbara: A Detailed Guide

There really isn’t a bad time to plan a Santa Barbara vacation. The Central Coast city has generally pleasant weather year-round, and there’s always something to do, whether it be relaxing on the beach, shopping on State Street, or indulging in the wine scene. Of course, there are still some times to visit that are better than others.

In general, the best time to visit Santa Barbara is from the late spring to early summer, or in the early fall. That said, you can still have a wonderful vacation in this beautiful destination during other times of the year – it will ultimately come down to what you’re interested in doing and what your priorities are while on vacation. There are also a few cons to be aware of when visiting in the late spring, early summer, and early fall.

In order to help you determine the best time to visit for your specific needs and preferences, I’m breaking down the pros and cons of visiting during each season.

Great Arch at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse. A large arch with Spanish-style architecture with grass and some lush gardens in front.

The Best Time to Visit Santa Barbara: A Breakdown by Season

Here’s a complete guide into what you can expect when visiting the gorgeous city of Santa Barbara during each season.

Visiting in the Spring

Best For: Travelers who want to hike, be outside, and enjoy the pleasant weather (but are okay with not swimming at the beach!) while avoiding the big crowds of the summer.

The late spring is one of the best times to vacation in Santa Barbara . The weather tends to hit the low 70s, which is perfect for spending time outside without getting uncomfortably hot. The early spring is still a nice time to visit, but keep in mind that temperatures are typically a bit cooler, hitting the mid to high 60s. There’s also a good chance you’ll experience some rain.

Keep in mind that those who really want to swim at the beach should wait for the weather to warm up a bit more. In the spring, it will still typically be too cold to jump in the water (unless you’re bringing a wetsuit!).

What’s also great about visiting in the spring is that, while it can get somewhat busy (particularly during schools’ spring break weeks), it’s generally not going to be as crowded as it is in the summer .

The spring is also a particularly nice time to spend a day in Solvang , Los Olivos, or one of the other towns in the Santa Ynez Valley – Santa Barbara’s wine region . Temperatures are warmer in the area, ranging from the low 70s to the low 80s during the day, depending on the exact time of year. Just keep in mind that there’s still a good chance you’ll run into some rain in March and early April.

I also highly recommend travelers going to Santa Barbara in the mid to late spring make their way to the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden for a chance to see the California poppies in bloom! You’ll also see other seasonal wildflowers, and will be able to explore the lush landscape (which is particularly beautiful after a good rainy season!).

Santa Barbara Spring Events

  • Santa Barbara International Orchid Show (One Weekend in March)

Visiting in the Summer

Best For: Travelers who want to soak up the sun at the beach (so long as you don’t mind crowds!).

As you can probably guess, Santa Barbara sees the biggest influx of visitors in the summer – particularly in July and August. Travelers flock to the city to spend time outside, swim at the beach, and enjoy the warm weather.

The best weather is in July and August, when the temperatures tend to average around the high 70s – perfect beach weather! Santa Barbara’s weather in June is still super pleasant, with temperatures typically hitting the low 70s during the day. If you want to enjoy the warm weather and avoid the worst of the crowds, you might want to consider visiting in June, before the majority of summer travelers make their trips. That said, keep in mind that “June gloom” – a common California weather pattern characterized by overcast skies – may happen, so you might miss out on sunny days.

Another thing to consider when planning a summer Santa Barbara trip is that hotels and house rentals will be more expensive . They can also book up more quickly, so you should make your reservations as soon as you’re ready to commit.

One last important note: travelers interested in spending time in the Santa Ynez Valley during their trip may want to think twice before visiting in the summer . Temperatures are much hotter once you’re in the valley, typically hitting the mid-80s in June and the low 90s in July and August. It’s still doable, but just be prepared to face the hotter temperatures.

Santa Barbara Summer Events

  • Santa Barbara Wine and Food Festival (One Day in June)
  • Santa Barbara Summer Solstice Celebration (One Weekend in June, Free Admission!)
  • Summer Courthouse Film Series (Fridays in July and August, Free Admission!)
  • Old Spanish Days Fiesta (Five Days in July or August)

Pros of Visiting SB in the Summer

  • Perfect weather for going to the beach and spending time outside
  • Lots of fun seasonal events

Cons of Visiting SB in the Summer

  • Huge influx of crowds
  • Higher hotel and house rental prices
  • Uncomfortably hot temperatures in the Santa Ynez Valley

Visiting in the Fall

Best For: Travelers who want the benefits of good weather without the crowds of the summer.

If you have complete flexibility in your schedule, I’d recommend planning a Santa Barbara vacation in the fall – particularly the early fall. In September and October, the daytime temperatures average around the mid 70s, so it’s still an ideal time for swimming at the beach and enjoying the beautiful hikes in the area.

The crowds from the summer also drastically drop, which means you’ll have more of the city to yourself . Just keep in mind that hotel and house rental prices in the early fall can still be somewhat comparable to what you’d find in the summer.

Once you get into November, the temperatures average around the low 70s during the day. You can still comfortably spend time outside – just don’t expect to jump in the ocean! Crowds are even thinner during this time, as well.

Just like during the summer, if you’re planning on heading to the Santa Ynez Valley, you may want to wait until the later fall , depending on your tolerance for heat. Temperatures in September and October typically hit the mid 80s to low 90s during the day. It’ll be much more comfortable in November, when temperatures average around the mid 70s.

The fall in Santa Barbara is also an especially amazing time for food and wine aficionados . There are some excellent events, including the Santa Barbara Seafood Festival and the Vintners Festival.

Santa Barbara Fall Events

  • Santa Barbara Sea Glass & Ocean Arts Festival (One Weekend in September)
  • Santa Barbara Vintners Festival (One Day in October)
  • Santa Barbara Harbor and Seafood Festival (One Day in October)

Pros of Visiting SB in the Fall

  • Great weather, especially in the early fall
  • Fewer crowds compared to the summer

Cons OF VISITING SB IN THE FALL

  • Uncomfortably hot temperatures in the Santa Ynez Valley in the early fall
  • Hotel and house rental prices can still be somewhat high, particularly in the early fall

The Sunken Gardens at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse. A white Spanish-style building with lush gardens in front, featuring palm trees.

Visiting in the Winter

Best For: Travelers looking to visit in the off-season to get great deals on hotels and house rentals.

Winter in Santa Barbara tends to be a bit quieter , with the exception being around the holidays. Since this is the off-season, this is a particularly nice time to visit for those who would prefer to spend less on accommodations . Of course, there are some trade offs to visiting during this time.

If you’re planning on visiting Santa Barbara in the winter, the biggest factor to consider is rain. The winter is Santa Barbara’s rainy season , so it’s not an ideal time for those prioritizing going on hikes or spending time lounging at the beach. While still pleasant, temperatures are “cold” by Santa Barbara’s standards, averaging in the mid 60s during the day. Keep in mind that the rain and cooler temperatures extend to the Santa Ynez Valley, as well.

With this in mind, if you care more about indulging in the amazing food and wine scene and exploring the downtown area, the winter can still be a wonderful time to visit . Just be sure to bring an umbrella!

If you’re planning on visiting Santa Barbara in December, you can enjoy some of the fun holiday activities . There is the Santa Barbara Trolley of Lights , which takes guests on a tour throughout the area to check out some of the most festive holiday lights. Travelers can also kick off the holiday season during the waterfront Parade of Lights, which includes a firework show.

Santa Barbara Winter Events

  • Santa Barbara Harbor Parade of Lights (One Day in December, Free Admission!)
  • Santa Barbara International Film Festival (One and a Half Weeks in February)
  • World of Pinot Noir (One Weekend Around Late February or Early March)

Pros of Visiting SB in the Winter

  • Generally lower hotel and house rental prices (except for around the holidays!)
  • Fewer crowds (again, with the exception of the holidays)

Cons of Visiting SB in the Winter

  • Mild temperatures, but still too cold to spend time swimming at the beach
  • Higher risk of rainy weather

If you want to try something new head to the rental shop and pick up a paddle board or foam board to try out! Nearby, we recommend trying Padaro Beach Grill which is known for their fish tacos!

Amenities: There are no public toilets other than the chemical toilets at the entrance so plan ahead. Parking is located along Santa Claus Lane and the surrounding area.

Recommended Nearby Hotel : The Best Western Plus Carpinteria is great for the budget and a nice location for getting around all of Santa Barbara County, it is located right off of Highway 101.

Status quo in downtown Santa Barbara appears to be no longer an option

is santa barbara nice to visit

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The message is getting louder as the calendar dates disappear when it comes to an action plan for downtown Santa Barbara. The current configuration of some creative dining and entertainment options in one area and a stagnant look in other areas has been economically frustrating for businesses owners, the Santa Barbara City Council and with multiple interested parties.

Efforts to create a master plan are going forward but in the meantime, the leader of the charge to do something now is Mayor Randy Rowse. In addition to making his point at the council meetings, he is getting his message to local media outlets for a further reach to the public

He said this year is marking the fifth year of the current look of the downtown business corridor and he worries, without something fresh happening soon, the summer season will not have the vital financial benefits the area has enjoyed in the past. For certain, both of the biggest city parades will not be taking place on State Street. The summer Solstice Parade is on Garden Street and the Old Spanish Days Parade is on Cabrillo Boulevard.

The mayor said the economic impacts of a slower paced downtown are showing up in the budget. The downtown parking system is in the red, and he has favored clearing out barricades and letting cars come back into the streets that are now closed.  For special events, Rowse said barricades and designated areas are the way to go for just those events. That would allow for parades, the Farmers' Market (on Tuesday and soon on Carrillo Street), and other outside activities on the street.

Keeping the status quo, he said over and over, is not an option. Opening it is something that can be done immediately.

At this week's city council meeting, many voices were heard, including the mayor and council about a Community Benefit Improvement District (CBID).  If approved, businesses in a specific area will pay into a tax base for improvements in that area including, but not limited to, street cleaning, security, beautification and event planning.

The CEO of Montecito Bank & Trust Janet Garufis favored the CBID but also said, "I was recently walking up State Street and had to ask myself I’m not sure why our visitors want to walk up and down State Street because it really is it’s not a compelling place to be anymore."

She is on a CBID committee with Developer Peter Lewis who said, "this effort was born out in necessity. The status quo is no longer acceptable, an option or strategy."

AttorneyTrevor Large works in downtown and said, "for too long, there’s been a lot of finger pointing both at property owners, at the city, or the city council saying who’s to blame for this who’s gonna do something about this?"

Rowse said the solutions are long over due and the impacts are painful. "The fact that there are some self-inflicted wounds, the continued closures of State Street and now the deficit we face seriously in our parking systems from whatever reason, the fact that we voted away 2/3 of the proposed by staff budget to clean State Street," he said.

A bouncy house at a birthday party was a highlight of my childhood, but a 24,000-square-foot one? To my younger self, that would have been like winning the lottery.

From April 26 to 28, Elings Park will transform into a bouncy-house wonderland as the Big Bounce America 2024 tour stops in Santa Barbara. At the heart of the excitement lies The World’s Largest Bounce House, a sprawling 24,000-square-foot inflatable wonderland equipped with basketball hoops, ball pits, and climbing towers. This bounce house also has a deejay at the center providing music as you bounce.

“Anything you imagine in a bounce house is inside this massive bounce house,” said Sophia Wilson, the Chief Operating Officer at Big Bounce America.

The tour boasts seven inflatable attractions, each offering unique experiences. On the list of attractions are “The OctoBlast,” a 900-square-foot, foam-filled bouncy house; “SportSlam,” a sports area equipped with nets, hoops, and balls; “The Giant,” a 900-square-foot bounce house with 50 different obstacles; and “airSPACE,” a 25-foot-tall, space-themed attraction with a ball pit. Each bounce session is broken up by age group, so both kids and adults can enjoy an afternoon of fun at the inflatable attractions.

Attendees can also refuel at one of the many on-site food trucks.

“Parents and children can expect a day filled with bouncy family fun and creating lifelong memories,” said Wilson. “Parents can also expect to drive home with worn-out, sleepy children.”

Tickets start at $22 for toddlers. Prices go up for juniors, bigger kids, and adults. See thebigbounceamerica.com/tour-dates .
