Chalbi desert.

This small desert, east of Lake Turkana and encompassing North Horr, offers an otherworldly landscape and a fascinating array of natural wonders. The name “Chalbi” originates from the language of the Gabbra people, meaning “bare, salty area,” which perfectly captures the essence of this extraordinary desert.

Welcome to Chalbi Desert, a captivating and unique destination located in northern Kenya near the Ethiopian border. Stretching over 1,000 square kilometers, the Chalbi Desert is characterized by its ancient lakebed, rocky terrains, and lava hills that provide a striking contrast to the surrounding plains. The ground consists of dried mud and salt, transforming into a soft, sticky surface during the rare rainfall that occurs in this rain-shadow desert.

As an important geosite of Kenya, the Chalbi Desert has yielded preserved fossils that contribute to our understanding of the region’s Quaternary climate, including fascinating aquatic creatures like the Nile perch. While the climate is arid, with an annual rainfall of approximately 150 mm, the desert occasionally experiences heavy downpours, forming temporary lakes that sustain diverse wildlife and lush vegetation. Prepare to be mesmerized by the Chalbi Desert’s enchanting beauty, its relentless winds, and occasional sandstorms, creating an unforgettable experience in this remote and awe-inspiring desert landscape.

Best time to visit

The ideal time to explore the captivating Chalbi Desert is during the dry seasons, which typically span from July to October, as well as January and February. During these months, the desert landscape is at its most enchanting, with the arid terrain providing an ideal setting for exhilarating game drives and invigorating safari walks. This is also a time when wildlife gathers around the limited water sources, offering incredible opportunities to witness the unique adaptations and behaviors of desert-dwelling animals. The absence of rainfall during these months ensures clearer skies and more predictable weather conditions, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the mesmerizing beauty and tranquility of the Chalbi Desert. Whether it’s witnessing the resiliency of life in this harsh environment or capturing stunning photographs of the desert’s dramatic landscapes, visiting during the dry seasons guarantees a truly unforgettable experience.

Chalbi Desert Flora and Fauna

Flora in the Chalbi Desert is scarce due to the high salinity of the soil. Most parts of the desert are barren with no vegetation. However, there are a few areas where plants can be found, particularly near the outlets of tributary streams after seasonal rainfall. Species such as Salvadora persica, Acacia tortilis, and Cordia sinensis can grow in the vicinity of Chalbi’s drainage system. The desert is predominantly inhabited by annual plants, with Drakebrockmania somalensis being one of the notable species. During years of abundant rainfall, grasses like Aristida adscensionis and A. mutabilis can cover these areas. In the former lake bed, the plant Lagenantha nogalensis can be found, while on the desert’s edges, species like Dasysphaera prostrata and Hyphaene coriacea thrive.

As for fauna, the Chalbi Desert is home to a variety of herbivores, including oryx, African elephants, Somali ostriches, Grevy’s zebras, and reticulated giraffes. However, it is important to note that black rhinoceros, which used to inhabit the area, have been driven to extinction due to hunting. Despite the arid conditions, the region also supports a population of African lions, representing the large predator guild in the desert. The presence of these diverse animal species adds to the ecological significance and biodiversity of the Chalbi Desert, making it a unique and captivating destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Chalbi Desert in Kenya

Chalbi Desert Safari

Surrounded by volcanoes and ancient lava flows, Chalbi Desert is the hottest and most arid region in Kenya. Though it is a harse and sparsely populated desert, its known for its stunning natural beauty. It has towering sand dunes and volcanic mountains. The Kalacha oasis is an assured watering point – several days’ walk from the closest suitable grazing areas, and camels, cattle, donkeys and goats gather here in mass. With its traditional caravan routes, the region is also home to Kenya’s last nomadic tribes, such as the Turkana, Samburu, Marakwet, Pokot, El Molo, and the Gabbra tribes. The Gabbra people of this area are a hardy race, and adaptation to a nomadic way of life ensures their survival.

The Chalbi Desert, a paradise located on the Northern Side of Kenya near the border with Ethiopia. It’s approximately 500 Km from Nairobi and approx 50km from Marsabit. Surrounded by volcanic remains, Chalbi Desert is the aridest and hottest place in Kenya. It has incredible huge sand dunes and beautiful natural sceneries.

The Chalbi Desert in northern Kenya has more to offer in picturesque and tranquil oases for some worthy moments. That and the fact that it is almost a sheer miracle that such a cool and vegetative spot can exist in such a vast region of nothing but sand and bareness.

When staying at Marsabit, you will be able to visit Lake Paradise in Marsabit National Park located in Marsabit County. It’s home to one of the huge elephant tuskers that reigned back in the 1960s and 70s called Ahmed.

Tribes and Culture

With its traditional nomadic routes, the region is also home to Kenya’s last nomadic tribes, such as the Turkana, Samburu, Marakwet, Pokot, Rendile, El Molo, and the Gabbra tribes. The Gabbra people of this area are a hardy race, and adaptation to a nomadic way of life ensures their survival.

Since Chalbi is an arid area, it gets hard for such communities to find water and food for their livestock and their own use. They tend to move and never spend a long time at a place.

They build temporary structures called manyattas, that are easy to demolish once time to move to the next stop arrives. In most cases, women and children are the ones left to build manyattas, while the men and young boys are out to graze and take care of their livestock.

This Kenya Northern Safari will include Samburu National Reserves, Lake paradise at Marsabit National Park, Lake Turukana, Loiyangalani town, Ngurunit/Ndoto Mountains, Camping in the wild, Bonfire plus Mbuzi choma covering Chalbi Desert, Lake Turkana, Samburu National Reserve & Marsabit National Park Cultural Interactions Expedition.

The north is BIG and very beautiful, vast, and magnificent. Getting yourself to the desert country that is Northern Kenya is no mean feat. The land is hot, parched, and broken by volcanic activity where ancient blackened lava flows and endless thorn trees stretch from horizon to horizon. The journey's experience is part of the destination and it’s only by taking the long difficult road that a real sense of remoteness is gained. The trip winds through some beautiful countryside, and travellers invariably encounter Rendille camel trains and pass by tiny villages and nomadic encampments along the way.

Travel to Chalbi Desert and Free Your Mind

' src=

Chalbi desert a former lake that dried up about 10,000 years ago is located in Kenya’s North, in the middle of the county of Marsabit.

Chalbi Desert, Extreme Climate, Oasis and Pictures?

The equator on the east of Great Rift valley passes through Nanyuki town, which marks the beginning of a swathe of Climatic Extremes. Starting with the immediate snow capped Mount Kenya, to the Lowlands of Samburu along the tarmacked A2 highway. All the way to Lake Turkana, Kenya’s largest lake and world’s largest permanent desert lake.

On the East of Lake Turkana is Chalbi Desert, Extreme heat strangles the towns of North Horr through the Desert where the elements reign absolute. To the periphery where you can find the Oasis at Kalacha that’s the lifeline support for local communities and their herds.

Maikona, Camel Caravan

Geology and Climate

In a book, Sabkha Ecosystems: Volume III: Africa and Southern Europe – edited by Münir Öztürk, Benno Böer, Hans-Jörg Barth, Siegmar-W. Breckle, Miguel Clüsener-Godt, M. Ajmal Khan.

Chalbi desert is composed of saline and alkaline sediments and stabilised sand dunes; a resulting formation of the old bed of Lake Chalbi. During the Pleistocene (1.8mya to 10,000 years BP) this lake drained the volcanoes of marsabit. It has since dried up to form the extensive Chalbi desert. The area lies in depression between 430 and 500 mm above seal level sorrounding a large central plain. Precipitation is low with an average of between 100 and 250 mm a year for the region. This mostly occurs between March-May and October-December. The drainage from sorrounding mountains (Mt Marsabit, Hurri Hills, Mt Kulal, Mt Nyiru, Ol Doinyo Mara and Ndotos) maybe lost by evaporation and never reach the Chalbi Desert Sabkha Ecosystems

The observations by Sabkha Ecosystems is however flawed in part; as there are flash floods from Mount Kulal and Hurri Hills. This happens especially in the rainy months of April and October that makes the ground soggy and impassable

The flash floods only last a couple of hours and are soon drained or evaporate by mid the following day. At night, Chalbi Desert provides the best environment for sky observatory . Astrophotography is also suitable as the night skies remain unpolluted with city lights.

The Chalbi Desert Experience

chalbi desert tour

Interestingly, all you have to do is contemplate a simple grain of sand, and you will see in it all the marvels of creation where the desert is a natural extension of the inner silence of the body. In my secret reveries, I had always wanted to experience a desert safari. Its vast emptiness scorching sun, blinding heat, red soils, cold night, beautiful sand dunes and the heart of every desert which is an oasis.

The Chalbi Desert, located 500 kilometres from Nairobi in Marsabit County, serve the purpose to satisfy all your desert fantasies. The Chalbi Desert is one of the aridest places in Kenya occupying approximately 100,000 kilometres Of land and is surrounded by volcanic hills.

WHAT TO PACK FOR A DESERT SAFARI

The desert is a harsh and unforgiving environment that every individual should take enough time to prepare for.

Here is a list of essentials to pack.

A popular quote often reminds us that water tells none of its secrets, but in all its forms it carries the knowledge of life throughout the universe. The average temperature in the Chalbi desert is around 43 degrees Celsius to 46 degrees Celsius. It’s advisable to carry more than enough water, but should this sound not doable, Staying at home saves the day. Keeping yourself hydrated in the desert is as important as every gasp of air you breathe.

chalbi desert tour

2. Sunscreen

The misconception that sunscreen is only for the coast will have you roast and toast in the desert as your skin flares with sunburns. Apply your sunscreen before stepping into the desert to allow enough UV protection, and keep reapplying every two hours.

3. Extra food

Hunger pangs are as bad as the need for a bathroom break while racing on a busy highway. They are inconsolable and no amount of brain convincing allows you to ignore the insides of your intestines, which constantly knock in a quest to be full. It is hard to access stopovers for meals during a desert safari, hence the need to take some extra snacks with you.

4. Appropriate Clothes

The greatest walk of shame is glamorously dressing to kill in your favourite wedding attire when attending a burial where mourning will be more popular than your colourful dress. More often people park less and more revealing clothes for the desert safari. This is not always advisable due to the harsh conditions in the desert and it is hence advisable to pack the following.

ACTIVITIES TO DO AT THE CHALBI DESERT

1. Desert safaris

Using a land cruiser and an experienced driver, there are various places to visit within Chalbi Desert.

The Kalacha Oasis is a pleasant surprise in the middle of the arid countrywide.

Loiyangalani A tourist town on the shores of Lake

Turkana and you can enjoy the Sundowner or visit the Elmollo Shrine island by boat.

Ngurunit An Oasis is surrounded by Ndoto ranges which is popular for its birdlife.

2. Camel Rides

Probably the most beautiful thing about the camels is that they can work a week without a drink, But man can drink a week without work. A desert safari without a camel ride is like attending a wedding and missing a slice of cake, which is the reason some of us attend weddings anyway.

3. Culture tour

Culture is a way of coping with the world by defining it in detail. Some communities have perfected the skill of redefining what we consider difficult. The Rendille, Samburu, Turkana and the Gabbra who are pastoralists in nature have a beautiful culture and system of survival in the harsh climate something we can borrow a leaf from.

THE DON’TS DURING A DESERT SAFARI

1. Don’t underestimate the amount of water

What makes a desert beautiful is that somewhere in it hides a well. However, let this not blind you into underestimating the amount of water you will need throughout the safari.

2. Don’t wear tight and dark clothes

You can have anything you want in life if you dress for it. Dress appropriately for the desert and let not tight and dark clothes become part of your suitcase delicacy.

3. Do not stray away from the caravan

It’s popular to imagine that a camel that never leaves the caravan will never discover a new oasis. However, hold that thought before the desert launches its wrath on you with its vast empty stare that will leave you stranded alone away from the group.

Kenya’s Two Deserts: A Quick Guide

Kenya’s deserts are quickly rising in popularity among the adventurers who live in or visit Kenya. They provide magnificent vistas and wide open playgrounds where off-road enthusiasts and hikers can fully let themselves go.

There are only two deserts in Kenya: Chalbi and Nyiri. Below is a quick exploration of both, with the best time to visit and activities you can do. If I’ve missed something, let us know and we’ll happily add it in. For now, let’s have a look at what the deserts in Kenya are all about.

Table of Contents

Chalbi desert in Kenya

Chalbi Desert

Chalbi Desert is the most visited of the two deserts by a mile so you know it’s a delight. To begin with, the road trip to get there is fantastic, with almost vacant roads, grand open skies, and lots of scenery.

Chalbi used to be a huge lake millennia ago. Now, it’s a wide expanse of sand dunes, oases, and cracked ground. The human population is sparse and consists of the Dasanatch, Gabra, Rendille, and Turkana – some of the most isolated communities in Kenya.

The desert is the hottest and most arid in Kenya, with temperatures reaching up to 45 degrees celsius and dropping to about 15 degrees at night.

Chalbi Desert is located in the North of Kenya, in Marsabit County. It borders  Lake Turkana  and stretches about 100KM East to the border with Ethiopia.

Find Chalbi Desert on Google Maps .

How to Get There

You can only get to Chalbi Desert by road. The trip from Nairobi will take about 8 hours in good conditions.

Places to Visit/Things to Do

For a desert, Chalbi has a lot of interesting and fun activities to do:

Explore desert features

If surfing sand dunes and basking by oases are experiences on your bucket list, then Chalbi has the locations you’re looking for. Driving up and down sand dunes in a 4×4 is another thrilling way to explore the desert.

Interact with the communities

The communities found within Chalbi desert are very unique. Hanging out with them, understanding their culture, and learning how they survive the harsh environment could honestly be a life-changing experience.

Camel rides

This is the most authentic camel ride you will have in Kenya because – you know – you’re in a desert. Maybe you can find out if you and a friend can race them?

Lake Turkana

There’s a lot to see in and around Lake Turkana. The islands within the lake are shrouded in mystery and myth by the local people and there are several serene picnic spots where you can spend an easy afternoon.

Marsabit National Park

A short trip away from Chalbi Desert will get you to Marsabit National Park where you can take a game drive with elephants, rare birdlife, and much more in picturesque landscapes.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Chalbi Desert is during the dry seasons: January – February, and July – October. The rainy seasons make exploration a whole lot tougher and it’s just not worth the trouble.

Chalbi Desert Tours

Chalbi Desert is best experienced with a skilled guide. These tour companies are the most knowledgable that we know:

  • Tulivu Safaris
  • Kwezi Safaris
  • Bonfire Adventures

Nyiri Desert

Nyiri Desert is the lesser known of Kenya’s deserts. The dunes are not as high as Chalbi but they are still awesome to climb and drive over. It also has more green and wildlife to look out for.

There are fewer communities here to interact with, however, mostly due to where it’s located. But if you want a pure, almost solitary desert experience, Nyiri provides in spades.

Nyiri Desert is found in Kajiado County, about 80 Km east of Lake Magadi, and stretches to Kenya’s southern border with Tanzania.

Find Nyiri Desert on Google Maps

You can get to Nyiri Desert from Nairobi by road. The drive takes 4 and a half hours.

There are various sightings of wildlife and rare vegetation across the desert. Take an off-road drive with a few friends and see who can pick out the most amazing fauna and flora.

National Parks

Nyiri Desert extends into three of the most fascinating  national parks in Kenya :

  • Tsavo West National Park
  • Amboseli National park
  • Nairobi National Park

These parks offer different wildlife and nature experiences and are guaranteed memorable adventures.

Sunrise and Sunset

The vast, barren landscapes of Nyiri Desert provide a beautiful view of sunrises and sunsets, with shifting shades and colours. Take out your camera and take shots against the light for some of the brilliant.

The best time to visit Nyiri Desert is during the dry season, June – October. The desert is easier to get around and the surrounding national parks have more action.

Nyiri Desert Tours

You could hire a personal car and take the trip to Nyiri on your own. But if you’d prefer to have a guide and just sit back and enjoy the ride, they are the best tour companies you can employ:

  • Zunguka Safaris

Final Thoughts

Chalbi and Nyiri are on opposite sides of the country and offer vastly different experiences. But the main draw for me is that in the desert, you are mostly in charge of your own fun. The open landscapes that stretch to the horizon take you back to being a child, where anything your imagination thinks up is possible.

Let us know below what you got up to when you visited either of the deserts in Kenya.

And if you prefer your sand dunes with a cool ocean breeze, check out my two favourite towns on the coast,  Diani  and  Kilifi .

Chalbi Desert in Kenya

Chalbi Desert in Kenya : Between Mount Marsabit in southern Ethiopia and Lake Turkana in northern Kenya, there is a small desert known as the Chalbi Desert. The Gabbra pastoralists who live in this region of Kenya refer to it as Chalbi, which is a dry, salty location. About 100,000 square kilometres of desert sit at an altitude of 370 metres above sea level. It is the only area in Kenya that can be considered a real desert. It’s one of Kenya’s hottest deserts and driest areas.

A lake that was created by damming lava flows from volcanic activity near Mount Marsabit once spanned the immense desert. This region’s lowlands are made up of a sizable lava plateau and volcanic hills. The terrain is dotted with Inselbergs of all sizes and shapes, ash-grey ridges, fragmented groups of tiny houses, and dunes. Sand and silt particles are being moved north-westward by dust storms across Chalbi, while camel lines shimmer in the background like reflections in a mirage. Massive clay animates the bleached stretch of coarse sand, and storms in the desert frequently hit the clear rocks.

The Climate

The Chalbi Desert has temperatures that range from over 36°C in February, which is the hottest month, to as low as 18°C in July, which is the coolest month. The daytime highs are very high, and the night-time lows are very low.

A rain-shadow desert is Chalbi. The region experiences irregular rainfall, with some years seeing little to no precipitation at all. The average annual rainfall is roughly 150 mm (or up to 350 mm) and occurs during two rainy seasons. Meanwhile, there will probably be more than 2,600 mm of evaporation. There are numerous springs along the border of the desert, which produce oases of water and vegetation.

Occasional severe downpours of rain cause the water to flow off the hard desert surface and collect in surface depressions. A transient lake that can last a few months forms in years with exceptionally heavy rainfall. For instance, in 1978, a temporary lake with a depth of 50 cm was created and maintained for long enough for ducks to use it.

High winds are a constant in the Chalbi desert . In fact, the region features some of the world’s fiercest and longest-lasting wind systems. The region regularly experiences winds that gust over 50 km per hour. Sandstorms are a common occurrence in the area.

Animals found in Chalbi Desert

Oryx, African elephant, Somali ostrich, Grevy’s zebra, and reticulated giraffe are among the herbivores present in the area. Black rhinoceroses once inhabited the region, but they were killed to extinction. African lions are among the area’s huge predator species.

Only a few plant species may be found there because of the excessive salinity. The Chalbi Desert is mostly vegetated-free and arid. After the seasonal rains, one of those places where plants do develop is typically along the tributary stream exits. In the vicinity of Chalbi’s drainage system, Salvadora persica, Acacia tortilis, and Cordia sinensis can thrive, however the majority of desert plants are annuals. The plant Drakebrockmania somalensis is one of the species. These places can be observed covered by grasses like Aristida adscensionis and A. Mutabilis during years of heavy rainfall. The former lake bed is another location where certain flora can be found. One can discover Lagenantha nogalensis there. Last but not least, there are other plants that may be found on the outskirts of the desert, including Dasysphaera prostrata or Hyphaene coriacea.

Around here in Kenya, there are Gabbra pastoralists. These nomadic people mostly herd camels, goats, and livestock. There are also a few other pastoralists in the area, including the Rendille, Dasanech, and Turkana.

Chalbi Desert in Kenya

Things to Do in Chalbi Desert

Desert Safari rides

The Chalbi Desert has a lot to offer in terms of beautiful landscapes and serene oasis. You can board a land cruiser there and do a short desert safari while you’re there. The cars are great for surfing and racing down sand dunes.

Camel rides

Impressive isn’t it, riding a camel through the desert? It is the perfect approach to take in the desert and learn about how ancient civilizations and some contemporary desert dwellers moved around. It’s an individual experience.

Nyiri Desert

Southern Kenya is home to the Nyiri Desert, also known as The Nyika, Taru Desert, and Taru Desert. It is situated between the Amboseli, Tsavo West, and Nairobi National Parks and lies east of Lake Magadi. The Nyiri Desert covers a large amount of Kajiado County’s land area. The rain shadow cast by Mount Kilimanjaro is what makes it so dry.

The trees have green leaves and blossoms during the brief wet season, but during the dry season they are barren and covered in horn-like fronds of thorny euphorbia and greyish green creepers. Except for a few major springs and widely separated riverbeds, water is rare. The plain is peppered with rocky hills that sit on top of much older rocks. Baobab trees can be found in the desert; some of them are more than 2000 years old, and their grey boles can measure up to 10 feet (3 metres) in diameter. Elephant, giraffe, rhinoceros, lion, leopard, lesser kudu, and impala are examples of fauna.

In some parts of the desert, tiny trees, many of which are prickly and poisonous, are densely planted. There are also markers that point to game trails. The foliage and blossoms of the trees are green throughout the brief wet season. The thorny euphorbia fronds and greyish-green creepers that cover them during the dry season, on the other hand, leave them bare and twisted. In the deserts of Kenya , this is typical.

There aren’t many significant springs and riverbeds in the area, therefore water is scarce. Rock hills, some of which are constructed atop even older rock, are scattered throughout the plain. Many different baobab trees, some of which are over 2,000 years old, can be found in the desert.

Kaisut Desert

One of Kenya’s lesser-known deserts, the Kaisut Desert, is a hidden gem that is frequently disregarded by travellers. A wide area of sand dunes, rocky outcrops, and prickly shrubs may be found in the northern region of the nation. Sand dunes, rocky outcrops, and dry riverbeds are all features of the Kaisut Desert’s rugged landscape. Visitors can learn about the region’s distinctive flora and animals, including as Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, and lesser kudu, by hiking across the desert.

One of the most outstanding characteristics of the Kaisut Desert is the presence of the Turkana people, who have lived in this area for thousands of years. The Turkana are nomadic herders who have maintained their traditional way of life while adapting to the desert environment. Exploring the desert on foot or by camel offers breath-taking views of the arid landscape and its distinctive flora and animals. Interacting with Turkana’s allows visitors to learn about their unique culture and traditions.
