2022 Tour of Denmark Stage 1 Preview

Allerød > Køge 222.5km

tour of denmark 2022

The opening stage of the Tour of Denmark is a long one, and it could be a touch on the boring side, but not if the wind blows. It’s still likely to end in a sprint, but there is a chance of echelons.

A hot one up in Denmark with temperatures close to 30 degrees, but what about the wind? The opening 25km is mainly crosswind, which is then followed by 100 km of headwind. Then the road heads east and we get more crosswind sections. The wind will be around 20km/h for most of the day, which is strong enough to cause some problems, but I’m not sure we’ll see major splits. The problem is that the exposed sections don’t last too long, but hopefully someone still puts it in the gutter.

The stage finishes with this circuit, it is done on three full occasions. There is a cobbled section of road that lasts around 500m, and last time of asking finishes with 2km to go. They’re a little bit rougher than your normal town centre cobbles, but still shouldn’t cause the pros any problem.

The circuit itself has several corners, which will help the sprint teams line out the bunch. The last of these comes with 1.3km to go, before a long finishing straight that curves to the right. Sprinters take note, the finishing straight is into a strong headwind, don’t go too soon.

Does anyone want to try and put it in the gutter? Jumbo-Visma and Ineos look the most likely to try something, they come here with riders who perform well in windy conditions. I get the feeling we’ll see attempts to create echelons, but nothing will stick, and we’ll get a big sprint.

The first intermediate sprint of the day comes after just 20km. Jumbo-Visma and EF will be keen on controlling the opening kilometres to set up a sprint for Laporte and Cort. Ineos arrive with a strong squad, but they don’t have a quick man to threaten in the sprint, making it easy seconds in the GC fight.

The circuit is a good one for sprint teams. It’s technical enough to line things out, but not overly technical to the point where it becomes dangerous. Teams will need a good position for the final 3km, as we have a few corners in the next 2km and cobbles.

Jasper Philipsen  – two wins in the Tour de France was a brilliant return for the Belgian, he cemented his place at the top table of sprinting. He arrives in Denmark without his usual sprint train, but given the level at this race, he should still be up the front for the final 3km. This is his first outing since the Tour, we’ll have to see how his legs respond.

Olav Kooij  – took his first World Tour win over in Poland, the youngster is an enormous star of the future. Jumbo-Visma arrive with a brilliant sprint train, expect to see Van Der Sande and Laporte as his final men. Van Dijke was excellent in position 4 in Poland, but they also have Eenkhoorn at this race, he’ll likely be used earlier in the stage. They should dominate the finale of the stage and release Kooij from the front.

Ethan Vernon  – he’ll have Štybar and Mørkøv as his lead out men, which will give him a good chance of fighting for the win. He took a win early in the season in Catalunya and was very close to getting a second in the Tour of Norway. He’ll see this week as a big chance of getting another win.

Stanisław Aniołkowski  – started the season well but has fallen away a bit. He’s capable of challenging for the podium.

Sasha Weemaes  – after a successful season, I’m expecting him to move to the World Tour for 2023. He’s consistently been in the mix in sprints this year, he’s another who’ll see this is a chance to land a big win.

Alexander Salby  – I thought he was brilliant in the ZLM Tour, he was very unlucky not to take a win. The 24-year-old rides for Riwal, and has a brilliant lead out man in Elmar Reinders, he’s off to join BikeExchange next year. If he gets Salby into a good spot for the sprint, he’s got the speed to surprise the big names.

Prediction Time

It should be a straight fight between Kooij and Philipsen. Given the way he rode at the Tour de France, I’ll take a win for  Jasper Philipsen .

Profiles Tour of Denmark 2022

Denmark has hosted an immensely popular Grand Depart for the Tour de France, and with a Danish race winner the country is in an all-time high. The Danmark Rundt - or Tour of Denmark , set to take place between the 16th and 20th of August will see the peloton back on Danish roads.

It will be a five-stage race starting with a long day into Koge which will be a strong fit for the sprinters. Stage two will have the riders go through an individual time-trial of 12.2 kilometers which will set an early order for the fight for the general classification. Stage three will be tricky, flat on paper but besides the 239 kilometers on the menu, it features seven gravel sectors which can cause havoc but also very exciting racing.

Vuelta a Espana 2022 Stage Analysis | Profiles Vuelta a Espana 2022

It is a race for all types of riders except those who enjoy the long ascents. The fourth day will once again see a bunch sprint likely in the town of Skive, whilst the final day of the race will go through the iconic Vejle circuit. It will be a short stage with only 126 kilometers on the menu but it will feature a very complicated finale, with a five-lap circuit including three hilltops in fast sequence that make it incredibly hard to keep any sort of race under control and is ideal for those looking to make spectacle.

Easter 'hometown not tourist town' sign highlights Denmark's debate over visitor numbers

It is a simple four-word sign that has sparked a complex debate for one of Western Australia's most popular holiday towns.

"Hometown not tourist town" was scrawled on a sign greeting Easter visitors to Denmark, 400 kilometres south of Perth.

Sitting between towering karri forests and pristine, white beaches, Denmark is known for its surf, wineries and food.

It is home to about 3,000 people, but that population can quadruple during busy holiday periods.

One group of residents claims the influx is putting unsustainable pressure on the town, while local government and businesses say tourism is needed to diversify its economy.

A woman with her arms crossed, standing in front of sign

"Things have got out of balance the last few years," Helen Spencer said.

Ms Spencer is part of Denmark Sustainable Tourism Action Group, which installed the sign and was met with both criticism and support from locals and tourists.

"It's our home, we're happy to see tourists but hometown first, tourist town second," she said.

"Resources are stretched … it's not a good experience for a tourist and it's very uncomfortable for locals.

"You can't get parking, you have to queue, food shelves are empty, issues with telecommunications and there are lots of inconveniences."

Ms Spencer said her concerns were deeper than just day-to-day inconvenience.

She was also concerned for the diverse natural habitats surrounding the town.

Two panels lying on a grass field

Within days of the sign's installation, it was posted on social media and discussed on national television before somebody covered it in black paint and pushed it down.

A sign was also put up near it stating "tourists welcome", accompanied by a smiley face.

'People felt unwelcome'

Shire of Denmark president Kingsley Gibson said he was shocked by the sign.

"When I saw it hit social media and their responses, it was clear that that people felt unwelcome to come here," Mr Gibson said.

A man in a short sleeve shirt and glasses smiling

"I don't think that reflects the broad sentiment of the town.

"We've long recognised that we share this town, both permanent residents and temporary residents.

"It's made Denmark a dynamic and wonderful place to live."

Tourist numbers growing

In the five years to 2022, the number of visitors to Denmark grew from about 140,000 to just under 170,000.

Ocean pool with boulders

Mr Gibson believes the shire can balance tourism and local interests.

A 2021 survey of residents found 60 per cent did not want more tourists during peak periods.

But 70 per cent did say they want to see more during the off-season.

A family walking along rocks, next to a beach.

Tourism is the fifth-biggest employer in the town, worth an estimated $66 million a year.

"People that live here appreciate the diversity of cafes, restaurants, retail shopping that is available to us," Mr Gibson said.

"Most of our teenagers have had jobs in bakeries, cafes, and so on that were supported by tourism.

"It does put pressure, and we need to manage that."

A winding road with many cars parked on both sides.

Ms Spencer said the sign was not designed to make tourists feel unwelcome, but to raise awareness of their message.

"It was primarily intended to place pressure on local government and state government," she said.

"To stop this undue unsustainable primary promotion of tourism growth."

Diversifying trade

Local farmer Steve Birkbeck runs several businesses, including a popular farm-to-table restaurant and a cannabis distillery.

He is also planning to build an eco-retreat, which he says is an example of low-cluster accommodation that can sustainably manage tourist demand.

A man wearing a cowboy hat standing outside with a lake and trees behind.

Mr Birkbeck said he shared some concerns, but with the traditional pillars of Denmark's economy — agriculture and forestry — struggling, he said tourism was an opportunity to build a bright future for the town.

"It's an amazing opportunity for us to grow with the young millennial workforce that's coming here with their own young children," he said.

"Because that's a new phenomenon … our kids are staying, finally."
