The 2021 Trek Powerfly FS 7 on test – Is this the all-round eMTB of tomorrow?

Trek have completely redesigned the Powerfly FS, overhauling the concept to target a much wider audience, from trekking and leisure riders, to moderate trail adventurers. We tested the 120/100 mm travel eMTB with the Bosch Performance Line CX motor to find out whether the new Trek Powerfly FS 7 is the all-rounder that many have been looking for.

There’s no doubt that if we won the lottery, we would own more than one bike: one for long rides, one for flowing single track, one for fast commutes… But since none of us have a goose that lays golden eggs, we have to think carefully about which bike to invest in. Trek aim to solve this problem with the new Powerfly FS 7. We put the American eMTB through its paces in the Alps of South Tyrol to find out what it’s capable of. Can the 120 mm front and 100 mm rear travel eMTB with 29″ wheels and its Bosch Performance Line CX motor be the one bike for (almost) everyone?

The Trek Powerfly FS 7 in detail

The Powerfly FS has a distinct look and the unique design with the shock positioned behind the seat tube, together with the low-slung top tube, immediately catch your eye. A fender protects the rear shock from being bombarded by dirt from the rear wheel. The 85 Nm Bosch Performance Line CX motor and the 625 Wh battery are neatly integrated into the frame while the battery is easy to remove from the side of the down tube, even featuring a convenient carrying handle. Mounted in front of the stem, the Bosch Kiox display is easy to read but its navigation function is rudimentary at best. Unfortunately, Trek don’t offer any builds featuring Bosch’s new Nyon display with its extensive navigation functions. It’s a shame, the Nyon would look great on the bike! However, a model with the Bosch SmartphoneHub is available.

The components of the Trek Powerfly FS 7

In general, the componentry is good, consisting of a Shimano SLX/XT drivetrain, Shimano SLX brakes, 120 mm TransX dropper post and RockShox SIDLuxe Select+ shock. However, the 120 mm travel RockShox 35 Gold RL fork could be better. It does a good job of absorbing large impacts but a more sensitive fork would significantly increase comfort and traction at the front. The tires, handlebars, stem and wheels are supplied in-house. For frame size XS and S, Trek rely on 27.5″ wheels whereas sizes M, L and X roll on 29″ wheels. This should allow for consistent handling across all frame sizes. The Powerfly 7 is available for a reasonable € 5,360 and is approved for a maximum permissible weight of 136 kg. If you want to use the Powerfly FS for commuting and running errands, Trek have made the bike compatible with all the accessories you might need, including mudguards, a stand, luggage racks and lights. Alternatively, the € 6,335 Trek Powerfly FS 9 comes equipped with all of this as standard, including the Bosch SmartphoneHub.

The Geometry of the Trek Powerfly FS

Almost like you’re flying

How does such a versatile bike ride? The first thing you’ll notice when you climb aboard is the very low top tube and the freedom of movement that it provides. The riding position is compact and upright, which is great for long, leisurely rides and sightseeing. Your weight is evenly distributed between your hands and seat, contributing to the bikes overall comfort. An added bonus is the dropper seat post which makes getting on and off even easier.

With its predictable handling, wide handlebars, reliable brakes and high-volume tires, the bike instils you with confidence. The response of the RockShox 35 Gold fork is mediocre. A better fork could significantly increase comfort and, above all, traction. The rear suspension does a good job of managing its 100 mm travel as it doesn’t bottom out harshly and only releases as much travel as is absolutely necessary. The rider always stays informed about what’s happening on the trail beneath them without it being unpleasant. With an active riding style, the bike offers a lot of support and also responds to quick direction changes with immediate precision. The Trek Powerfly FS 7 is a nimble and intuitive ebike, allowing both beginners and experts to get their money’s worth. The Powerfly is a versatile eMTB that is equally suited to relaxed cruising, sightseeing and enjoying the outdoors as it is to more action-packed rides in moderate terrain. It’s an excellent companion for classic trekking riders who want to explore new terrain and aren’t afraid of tackling easy trails. Experienced riders will also get their money’s worth for demanding riding but you’ll have to know what you’re doing. The Powerfly FS 7 only reaches its limits on alpine trails and rough tracks.

Conclusionn

With its smart concept, the Trek Powerfly FS 7 is sure to meet the needs of many trekking riders. With its upright and comfortable riding position, efficient suspension and intuitive handling, it performs well on moderate off-road terrain as well as long gravel and forest path rides. If you’re looking for a trekking bike that rides like a sofa, this isn’t it, but if you’re looking for the trekking ebike of tomorrow, you’ll love the Powerfly.

Who does the Trek Powerfly 7 FS suit?

The Trek Powerfly 7 FS isn’t one of those e-bikes designed to replace a shuttle van or chairlift. With 130mm travel at both ends, this bike is built as more of an all-rounder, rather than a pedal-assisted downhill weapon. Its forte is long cross-country rides, letting the generous range supplied by the Bosch motor system take you to places you’d normally avoid or put in the too-hard-too-far basket.

We knocked out rides well over 50km long and always finished with plenty of power left in the battery. Of the four modes you can run the bike in, we spent most of our time in the Tour mode, which gave plenty of assistance for a lightweight rider, though heavier riders will probably use the Sport mode more. The Turbo mode is off-the-charts powerful, and for us was more of a novelty than anything else.

Unlike the Trek Fuel, which rolls on 29er wheels, the Powerfly uses the 27.5+ format, with 2.8″ Schwalbe Nobby Nics on 40mm-wide rims. With great power comes great traction responsibility.

Hard to miss it, hey? Subtly is not this bike’s caper – it’s got all the impact of a fire engine, in its bold red livery and with that massive down tube. The size of the tube isn’t just a product of fitting in the battery, it also provides a tremendously stiff core to the frame as well, a hallmark of the recent generation of Trek dual suspension bikes.

Look more closely and there’s a lot of finer detail to appreciate too. The smooth integration of the motor, battery and cabling is superb, and the build quality is typical Trek – top shelf.  A small amount of geometry adjustment is available via the Mino Link (we ran it in the slack setting).

About that fork…

Our bone of contention with the Powerfly is the fork this bike comes with, a basic RockShox Recon Silver. It’s just not up to scratch. We get it; building an e-bike is expensive, pricepoints need to be hit. But compromising in an area like the fork doesn’t make sense to us, particularly when you’ve got the weight and momentum of an e-bike to grapple with. We ultimately fitted one of the new FOX e-bike optimised 34 forks , which let us ride the bike to its full capacity.

Buttery supportiveness

Trek always deliver in the rear suspension department, and the Powerfly nails it once again. We’ve ridden many an e-bike where the rear end seems to struggle a little (the extra weight of the bike, coupled with the mass of the heavy wheels perhaps), but the Powerfly is on top of the game. The rear end has a brilliant progressiveness to it, staying up in its travel nicely, saving the last 20% for the truly nasty hits.

Let’s torque about it

Bosch provide the grunty motor. There’s a tonne of low-down power here, and when you combine it with the climbing gears offered by the 46-tooth Shimano cassette, even the heaviest riders on the steepest climbs aren’t going to be left wanting for more power or gear range. Our only criticism of the Bosch system is the bulky display unit. It doesn’t need to be so big, surely, and it looks ripe for destruction sitting up there!

Longer than a wet weekend

When it comes to the handling of the Powerfly, the bike’s long chain stay play a big role. At 474mm, the Powerfly’s rear-centre measurement is one of the longest on the market, and this has both positive and negatives implications in our mind.

Climbs like Bitcoin

The biggest upside of the Powerfly’s long chain stay is the way it climbs, particularly when it’s steep and loose. Keep your butt in the saddle and the traction is exceptional, you’ll climb things that you’d never have dreamed of.

But not a playful ride

If you’re looking for an e-bike that handles just like a regular mountain bike, then this isn’t it. Getting the front wheel into the air takes plenty of body language, it prefers to stay on the ground. And when descending steep, technical terrain the long stays push your centre of gravity forward when compared to a bike with a shorter rear end.

All up then?

There’s a lot to like about this bike, so it’s a downer that the fork is below par. Finger crossed Trek take this feedback on board for future versions of this bike. While the Powerfly didn’t blow us away on tricky, technical descents, that’s not really what this bike is aimed at. It excels at exploration, long cross country rides, or hooning flat-out up and down fireroads and smooth singletrack, so if that sounds like your bag, give it a look.

Our Click and Collect Service from our High Street store is free of charge. We are located in the High Street in Kenilworth, Warwickshire. When you place your order, you’ll be asked how you would like to receive updates, and we will use this method to notify you of when your product is ready to collect.

If your order is currently in stock in store, it will be ready to collect within 24 hours.

Generally, if your order is for a product stocked at our supplier’s warehouse, it will be ready to collect in 5 – 7 working days. You will receive notification of when it is ready to collect.

All bikes collected from store will be fully built and inspected by a trained mechanic so that it’s ready to ride. We will notify you when your bike is ready to collect, usually within 3 – 5 working days. As a family bike shop we are proud of our handover process. We are happy to make minor adjustments to the fit of your bike and we’ll go through any questions you have.

Please note, if you are purchasing a bike online through finance, it is not possible to collect your bike from our shop as the terms and conditions of the finance scheme state that your bike must be delivered to your home address.

UK Delivery

Our delivery charges are mased on delivery to mainland Britain. Additional delivery charges apply for Northern Ireland, Northern Scotland and offshore UK islands.

Bikes will be delivered within 5 working days with a delivery charge of £35.

If you order a bike that attracts a higher delivery charge, we will let you know.

All bikes are built, inspected and boxed by a trained mechanic before being shipped. To allow for shipping, bikes need to be partially disassembled before being boxed. We recommend that a trained bike mechanic assembles your bike ready to ride.

If you do not wish to receive a built bike, please let us know at time of order.

If your bike is to be delivered to an address within 20 miles of our store, we will deliver your bike, fully built and inspected. We will make minor adjustments to the fit of your bike and we’re happy to answer any questions you have as part of the handover process.

Delivery fees to islands within the UK and to Northern Ireland and Northern Scotland are higher.

Stocked in store.

If your order is stocked in our store, your order will be ready to collect, or despatched within 24 working hours. Our store is closed on Sundays, Mondays and Public Holidays, so any orders that are placed after 3pm Friday will be picked for despatch on the following Tuesday.

Stocked in Supplier's Warehouse

If your order is stocked in our supplier’s warehouse, please allow 7 – 10 working days for your order to arrive. Please note, some products have longer lead-times, particular with new bike models. If this is the case, we will contact you to inform you of the lead-time and discuss options such as waiting for the delivery, swapping for an alternative product or receiving a full refund.

Our courier will require instructions on where to leave your goods in a safe place if they are unable to make delivery. Please note we can take no responsibility for lost or damaged goods that have not been signed for.

If the courier fails to deliver your order, they will leave details on how to make alternative arrangements.

Free 6 Week Service

With any purchase of a new bike from us we offer a free six-week check. During the first few weeks of riding, your bike will be going through a settling in period and to keep your bike running smoothly and efficiently it may well need a few adjustments. During the six-week check we will happily check your bike over and make any adjustments necessary.

Please give us a quick call or message before you come in for your free six-week service. We would like to do this at a convenient time for you while you wait and browse around the store.

*Items that are a “Special Order” or “Custom made” for you cannot be returned unless there is a fault with manufacture.

With Pre-Launch , the date when we expect to receive the product ourselves is still a little too hazy to be confident in accepting Pre-Orders.

So, instead, you can submit your email address against the item you are interested in and we will email you as soon as stock arrives on the system.

Estimated Delivery & Collection Dates are given on Pre-Order and Pre-Launch products. They are for indication purposes only and can change at any time without notice.

The dates we provide are based on indications given by our suppliers. Whenever we get updated information from our suppliers we will endeavour to update the Estimated Delivery & Collection Dates provided on product pages.

If you are not happy with any items purchased via our website, under Consumer Contracts Regulations you have the right to return any unused products for a refund or exchange within 30 days.

When the customer sends an item back to the company (or, when the company arranges for collecting from the customer), the company will process the returned item then notify the customer via email of the refund. The refund will be issued within 3 - 5 working days of the product being received by us, it may then take an additional 3 - 5 working days for the refund to be paid into the customers account.

For items returned within the cooling off period...

• By law, customers have the right to withdraw from the purchase of an item within 14 working days of the date on which the item is delivered.

• Returned goods should be unused, in a saleable condition and in their original packaging with all labels still attached. Team Cycles is entitled to refuse the return or deduct from a refund as a result of the product not being in the above condition.
• We are only able to exchange like for like products. If you require a different item, you will need to opt for a refund and place a new order. All returns must have a completed returns form.
• We will refund you to your original payment method.
• We make no charge for returns, there is no restocking fee.
• Customised items cannot be returned. *
• Please do not send your purchase back to the manufacturer unless you have been advised to.
• Team Cycles customers have 30 days from date of delivery to return their orders.
• Once we have received the returned goods we will refund you, by the method you used to pay for your order. This may take 5-7 working days to appear as cleared funds.

*Faulty customised goods (or goods that have been altered in any way) will need to be returned for inspection as customisation may void your warranty and therefore faults may not be covered.

All products ordered from Team Cycles come with a full warranty which covers manufacturing faults and defects in workmanship. If you feel that your purchase has developed a fault, please contact our store for an assessment. To do this you will need proof of purchase.
