Mandaluyong City – Travelers planning on local and foreign trips now have one more annual event to look forward to, with the successful launch of the Travel Sale Expo, organized by the Global Tourism Business Association and One Klik Events Management.

The travel fair, happening from September 29 to October 1 at the SM Megatrade Hall, featured thematic tour packages and new offerings from travel agencies, tour operators, hotels, airlines, and other tourism groups. “This endeavor is a product started from falling in love and committed to the beauty of what I love to do, and that is promoting tourism to create a business that will bring jobs to many people that would help them to make a living,” Taylan said.

Some 200 booths and more than 100 exhibitors participated in the three-day event with around 60,000 foot traffic. Travel Sale Expo 2023 Chairperson Michelle Taylan led the opening of the event, with the goal of providing consumers with yet another option for their travel needs.

“[We are] here at the SM Megatrade Hall for the launch of something new – a passion project of mine that has been years in the making… All great things come from small beginnings and I am ultimately eager to see this project grow and prosper further,” said Taylan, a former PTAA President and now the President of the Global Tourism Business Association (GTBA).

The Department of Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco also supported the event and welcomed the organizers’ effort to promote travel in the Philippines, and boost tourism in general. Frasco, who was the event’s keynote speaker, said the recoup of the country’s tourism industry is attainable this year, regaining huge tourism sales made during the pre-pandemic stage in 2019, which was at 8.3 million tourists (including non-resident OFs), largely from Korea, China, the United States, Japan, and Taiwan.

These comprised 70 percent of the year’s tourist arrivals.Travel receipts reached $9.3 billion in 2019, up by 20.8 percent from the tourist receipts of $7.7 billion in 2018.

Frasco also outlined the programs and projects that are currently being implemented such as the establishment of Tourist Rest Areas across the country, the enhancement of airports and seaports,  and the incorporation of the Filipino brand piloted at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2, as well as the provision of internet connection to at least 94 tourism destinations as part of the Memorandum of Agreement between the Department of Tourism and the Department of Information and Communications Technology.

She also relayed projects in the pipeline such as the creation of a Tourist Lifecycle App, the establishment of a Tourist Call Center, and the anticipated signing of an agreement with the Department of National Defense and the Department of the Interior Labor and Government recognizing the necessity of ensuring peace and security in tourist sites.

The Travel Sale Expo now joins other travel trade shows mounted by other seasoned travel and tourism groups and associations in the country.

Taylan, who is no stranger to organizing travel fairs as a longtime professional in the field, is hoping to expand operations and the activity’s reach soon.

“…the work does not stop here. We are aiming to make things bigger – bigger deals, bigger venue, and bigger travel opportunities for everyone,” she said.

The Travel Sale Expo is co-presented by UnionBank, in partnership with the Tourism Congress of the Philippines, Israel Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines and the Global Tourism Business Association.

Travel Sale Expo 2023: An unstoppable growth for travel

WITH much optimism, the tourism industry is riding high with more than 2 million international visitor arrivals recorded from January 1 to May 12, 2023. This latest data is most welcomed by the Department of Tourism ( DOT ) as it aims to surpass this year’s foreign tourist arrivals target of 4.8 million visitors by the end of the year. Thus, this is the most exciting and opportune time to kick off a new travel sale expo that aggressively pursues the growing demands of the traveling public.

The Travel Sale Expo 2023 recently had it grand launch at the Marco Polo Hotel with no less than the former PTAA President Michelle Taylan at the helm as the Chairperson of the Travel Sale Expo 2023. Special guests are the ff: Mandaluyong Mayor Benjamin Abalos Sr.; Melany Sy and Vishal Kadian of Unionbank; , Hotel 101 Director of Sales & Marketing Gel Gomez; Malaysia Ambassador H.E. Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino; Egypt Ambassador H.E. Ahmed Shehabeldin; Israel Ambassador H.E. Ilan Flus; Qatar Ambassador H.E. Ahmed Saad N.A. Al-Homidi; Spanish Ambassador Miguel Utray Delgado; Vietnam Ambassador Huang Huy Chung; Czech Republic Charge de Affairs Mr. Dalibor Micka; Consul Ms. Ivone Gomes Embassy of Brazil; KTO Director Hyung Joon Kim; Romy Go of Guam Visitors Bureau; Malaysia Tourism Anna Oraiza T. Aban; OneKlik General Manager Raj Joshua Bangi; Megaworld’s Director of Sales & Marketing Cleo Albiso; TCP President Bob Zozobrado; Department of Tourism Undersecretary Ms. Myra Paz V. Abubakar; Starlux Country Manager James Huang; Airswift’s Fely Anne Salvador; Pam Navarro of United Airlines; Turkish Airline Joan Marie Pagdanganan; Cebu Pacific Angela Andrea C. Velez and Donald J. Morris of Cathay Pacific Airways . Various National Tourism Organizations, Airlines, Hotels, Insurance, Theme parks and other guests from the travel and tourism sector were also be present.

The launching of the OneKlik’s Travel Sale Expo 2023 with the theme “Travel Is On and It’s Unstoppable” is very timely as the travel market is growing and the demand for travel-related products and services is at an all-time high. “I organized the Travel Sale Expo 2023 because I wanted to help promote tourism in the country by encouraging more people to travel. Now that the travel industry is picking up, I wanted to bring back the volume of tourism business during the pre-pandemic levels and even go beyond that”, said Ms. Michelle Taylan.

On September 29, 2023, the Travel Sale Expo 2023, to be held at the Megatrade Halls in SM Megamall, in Ortigas, Mandaluyong City, will open its doors and present a wide array of travel-related products or services at huge discounts under one roof.

As the Travel Sale Expo opens in a few months from now, it will have more offerings that will easily be made available to the traveling public. Furthermore, access to this whole variety of travel services will be more frequent. Before there were only a few travel expos that you can visit in a year but with the launching of the Travel Sale Expo 2023, special travel packages are now readily available almost the whole year round.

This upcoming travel expo promises to be distinct from the rest, in terms of offering more value by welcoming more and varied stakeholders such as travel agencies, hotels, airlines, resorts, tour operators, travel insurance, and travel accessories retailers among others. Taylan shares, “We are doing the Travel Sale Expo a little different. We are open to anybody who wants to join our expo. You don’t have to affiliate yourself with a specific travel association to qualify to join. As long as you are a stakeholder in the tourism industry (and a legitimate one), you can join us. As a come on, we offer a hefty discount to possible exhibitors to make it easier for them to join.”

The new Travel Sale Expo is certain to perk up the travel industry, Taylan believes “there’s enough room for everyone to participate and enough room for a healthy competition.” She adds, “Let me put it this way, the travel or tourism industry is a huge market and it is even expanding especially now that business is picking up. In the end, it is the traveling public who benefits from this thru more choices, more suppliers, and lower prices.”

Among the new offerings of the Travel Sale Expo 2023 includes thematic tour packages involving honeymoon packages, sports tourism, health and wellness themes, as well as travel tours in emerging local and international destinations. In addition, several amusement parks and museums will also be participating in the event.

On the expo day, guests can expect a venue jampacked with activities that can enhance their experience like never before in a travel expo. There will be game shows, entertainment numbers like cultural shows from different local government units and presentations from participating schools. Also, business conferences will be organized featuring the best speakers in the country.

To add thrill and excitement for the public, a boatload of cash prizes and trips to local and international destinations are to be given away to lucky guests. On-the-spot gifts, gift checks, raffle prizes, and freebies will also be allotted to lucky visitors. And the most exciting part are the various travel fares and tour packages on sale that they can avail of during the three day expo event.

The Travel Sale Expo 2023 with a theme “Travel is On and It’s Unstoppable” is organized by OneKlik Events and Co-presented by Unionbank in partnership with Tourism Congress of the Philippines and Global Tourism Business Association.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

travel sale expo

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

travel sale expo

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

travel sale expo

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

travel sale expo

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

travel sale expo

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
