Oceania Marina Itineraries

Oceania marina review, review of oceania marina.

The 2011-built Oceania Marina cruise ship is one of the fleet's newest vessels , with sistership Riviera . Both liners were constructed by Fincantieri's Sestri Ponente shipyard (in Genoa Italy ) and designed by the Norwegian marine architecture company Y&S "Petter Yran and Bjorn Storbratten".

The vessel (IMO number 9438066) is currently Marshall Islands /France- flagged (MMSI 538003668) and registered in Majuro .

A modified version of this design is Oceania's new ALLURA-Class represented by the ships Vista (2023) and Allura (2025).

History - construction and ownership

Oceania Cruises is a US passenger shipping company and luxury travel brand owned by NCLH-Norwegian (shipowner), Between April 2007 and September 2014, the company (as part of "Prestige Cruise Holdings") was owned by Apollo Management LP - one of the world's largest private investment equity funds. Since September 2014, Oceania and the sister company RSSC-Regent are owned by NCLH - acquired at the total cost of USD 3 billion. Oceania ships offer luxury cruises with relatively shorter itineraries, as well as Around The World voyages up to 180 days in length.

Oceania Marina cruise ship

The 1260-passenger ship Marina debuted in January 2011 as Oceania's first newbuild . Shiny, large and chic, Marina marks a huge step forward for the upper-premium line.

Decks and Cabins

Oceania Marina staterooms (629 total in 17 grades/based on the sisterships' design) include 147 Suites, 444 Balcony, 20 Oceanview, 18 Interior. Most (94%) are the 240 ft2 / 22 m2 sized Balcony cabins. The largest passenger accommodations are the aft-facing Owners Suites (1335 ft2 / 124 m2 plus 665 ft2 / 62 m2 wraparound terrace).

The boat has 15 decks , of which 12 are passenger-accessible and 6 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Oceania Cruises Marina ship offers four reservations-only restaurants, plus a buffet restaurant and casual snack spots. Speciality restaurants come with no additional charge but require reservations. The most high-profile of all is Jacques, the first restaurant ever created, on land or sea, by celebrity chef Jacques Pepin. Jacques is designed with the feel of a French bistro and focuses on traditional French cuisine. Other speciality restaurants include the Polo Grill steakhouse and the Mediterranean Toscana - both carry-overs from the earlier ships of the line, and Red Ginger, which is an excellent pan-Asian spot.

Follows the complete list of Marina restaurants and food bars.

  • Red Ginger (feng shui Asia specialty restaurant with a 5-course “tasting” and a la carte menu)
  • Jacques (124-seat complimentary dinner restaurant, reservations-only; features French cuisine by chef Pepin)
  • Grand Dining Room (complimentary 340-seat restaurant for open seating Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner; offers French-inspired dishes, and menus change daily)
  • Waves Grill (casual dining fast-food bar; serves the pool deck area with made-to-order daily specialties and gelato ice cream)
  • Terrace Cafe & Bar (casual buffet restaurant, complimentary; open for breakfast and lunch; features indoor and outdoor sitting areas; the Terrace Bar serves as a small pizzeria as well; the Terrace Cafe transforms into “Tapas On The Terrace” at night serving traditional Mediterranean cuisine)
  • Culinary Center (for cooking classes and demos; hosts the “Gourmet Explorer Series” which consists of 20 new cooking classes; there is also "La Technique" - an exclusive cooking class focusing on the techniques of master chef Chef Jaques Pepin.
  • La Reserve (24-seat wine bar at surcharge; offers wine tastings and a 7-course dinner menu)
  • Toscana (96-seat Italian fine dining restaurant, dinner-only, reservations-only, complimentary; offers traditional Italian cuisine)
  • Polo Grill (96-seat Steakhouse restaurant, complimentary; reservations required)
  • Privee (a limited capacity private dining room, between Toscana and Polo, 10-seat, charge $1000 for the entire room; features Chef’s Table and 7-course gourmet menu)
  • In October 2015, Oceania announced its plan to combine the Toscana and Polo Grill speciality restaurants into a new venue - “Tuscan Steak”, with quality wood paneling decorated with platinum and silver. The gourmet dinner menu of the new restaurant includes items, such as “Bistecca alla Fiorentina”, “Maine Lobster & Shrimp Fra Diavol”, “Tuscan Porterhouse Steak”, and the signature pork chops of Oceania Cruises “Iberico de Bellota”. At the entrance, there is a wine cellar with a selection of fine wines.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Much of the inspiration for the layout of Marina came from such high-end establishments as Miami's Mondrian Hotel, the Palm Court at NYC's Plaza Hotel and Bouchon dining venue in Napa. Marina cruise ship is not a true luxury vessel; her cruises sell at a more moderate price point and are considerably less inclusive. Cruisers should bring out their wallets for a range of fares charged a la carte, from cocktails to enrichment programs and facilities.

Oceania Marina cruise ship

Follows the complete list of Marina lounges, clubs and other entertainment venues for kids, teens and adults.

  • Marina Lounge (main showroom/theatre for live evening entertainment and themed dancing parties; hosts daily trivia quizzes, lectures and presentations)

  • Martinis (a piano bar serving a variety of Martinis)
  • Three Boutiques (duty-free perfumes, jewellery, Oceania-logo merchandise, clothes, gifts, convenience goods)

  • Sun Deck (served by the Polo Bar; has sunloungers, showers, deck games - Shuffleboard, Golf Driving Net, 9-hole Mini-Golf putting greens, paddle tennis).

Following the drydock refurbishment in 2924 (April-May), on the ship will be introduced three new dining venues/options:

Aquamar Kitchen is a wellness-themed dining venue (introduced on Oceania Vista in 2023). This signature restaurant is complimentary and without reservations. It offers wellness-inspired food and beverages including smoothies, fresh-pressed juices, mocktails (made with Lyre’s Non-Alcoholic Spirits), energy bowls, avocado toasts, salads, wraps, tuna tacos, chicken sandwiches, Oceania's "Impossible Burger".

The poolside Ice Cream Bar serves the gourmet Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream as well as milkshakes and smoothies.

Waves Grill in the evenings transforms into an alfresco trattoria/casual restaurant serving Italian food including fresh-baked pizza by the slice and gourmet desserts.

Oceania Marina ship is the first of the line's two newbuilt vessels. Her sister and fleet mate is  ms Riviera . On September 2, 2014, the NCL Norwegian company purchased the company "Prestige Cruise Holdings" (owner of Oceania and  RSSC-Regent Seven Seas ) for USD 3,025 billion, thus becoming the official owner of all vessels in both fleets.

The line's owner NCL Norwegian received the Government's permission to operate cruises to Cuba from the USA, with three Oceania ships - Marina (starting at the end of 2016), Regatta  (starting in 2017) and Insignia (Nov-Dec 2017). Oceania ships operated a variety of itineraries, including a circumnavigation of Cuba (with stops in ports  Cienfuegos  and  Havana ) and also visiting Cuba as part of some  Panama Canal transition cruises .

The Apollo Group company provides all Oceania ships with the entire onboard hotel product and services. This includes administration, food staff (preparation and serving), housekeeping staff, also the vessel's provisioning and crewing. Other cruise lines served by Apollo are  Thomson UK (Marella Cruises)  and  RSSC-Regent .

Oceania Marina refurbishments review

The ship's drydock refurbishment in May 2020 (by the OceaniaNEXT project) resulted in several deckplan changes (details to be announced soon). What is known so far is adding a new cabin category (Owner Suite) designed by Trevor R. Howells (Los Angeles-based interior design firm).

Owner Suites are 2-room cabins furnished with Ralph Lauren Home furniture. The color scheme is white-navy blue-camel-creme. Upholstery and fabrics are in melange (stripes and solids), with pops in silver-gold-metallic. The Suite's foyer features premium wood paneling and stone flooring (limestone, black cabochon). The in-cabin bar is mahogany and with a quartzite stone top.

The Suite's living room has floor-ceiling windows, Grimaldi-weave sail white fabrics, a self-playing piano (made from polished ebony-black hardwood), a sectional sofa (with navy blue cushions), mahogany lounge chair. The dining room has a Mayfair table and Barrett Medium Knurled chandelier (natural brass). The Master Bedroom has a King-size bed, Mayfair Bergere armchairs, and nickel-trimmed lighting.

The Suite's wraparound balcony is premium teak-floored and fitted with custom-made (by Ralph Lauren) outdoor lounge furniture.

Drydock 2024

The scheduled drydock in 2024 (April 30-May 18) will be conducted at Navantia Shipyard in Cadiz Spain .

The multi-million refurbishment project includes the complete renovation of all passenger staterooms.

All public spaces (hallways, stairs, bars/lounges and dining venues - Grand Dining Room, Polo Grill, Martinis, Horizons, The Library) will be renovated, receiving new carpeting, furnishings, fabrics, lighting fixtures, artworks, Tuscan marble as well as refreshed upholstery.

The Penthouse Suites will be redesigned and completely refurbished, to receive new custom-made furniture, wardrobes and cabinetry, carpets and upholstery, lighting, more power outlets and USB ports. Penthouse Suites' bathrooms will receive Italian marble throughout, more drawers and larger showers.

All top-tier staterooms (Oceania Suites and above) will be redesigned and revamped.

The ship's three existing restaurants will be renovated and three new dining venues/culinary options will be added.

The new Ice Cream Bar (poolside) serves the gourmet Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream as well as milkshakes and smoothies.

The Polo Grill (steakhouse) will receive new carpeting, dining chairs, and window treatments.

Grand Dining Room

Handsomely decorated in rich woods, designer tapestry fabrics and oversized armchairs, the expansive dining area exudes classic splendor. The Grand Dining Room’s formally attired and classically trained wait staff graciously serve course after course of European-inspired cuisine or delectable alternatives such as healthy Canyon Ranch® signature dishes. As variety is essential, menus change daily with a brilliant choice of at least ten appetizers, soups and salads and twelve entrées at dinner.

Jacques

Exquisitely decorated with heirloom antiques, pickled wood furnishings and art from Jacques Pépin’s personal collection, Jacques was modeled after a Parisian bistro. Comfortable and eclectic, the ambiance is pure French, as is the cosmopolitan yet wonderfully embraceable cuisine. Luscious aromas waft from the gleaming show rotisserie, where chicken, duck, pork, beef and veal roasts slowly turn. Each dish is a classic, ingeniously reinterpreted by Master Chef Pépin. This is Coq au Vin beyond the imagination. Rotisserie-roasted chicken falls off the bone, bursting with flavor. His Steak Frites pairs the succulence of prime beef with the crisp sweetness of pommes de terre. Jacques is absolutely magnifique!

La Reserve

At La Reserve, guests may sample a flight of distinctive wines, hand-selected from the cellar that day by the head sommelier. The vintages might reflect the area of the world where Marina is sailing, or simply highlight their own unique characteristics. Other days, La Reserve will host premium tastings for more intimate gatherings.

Polo Grill

Polo Grill embodies all the elements of a classic steakhouse, expressing them with timeless reverence. Mindful of tradition, the decor features crisp, white linen tablecloths, dark wood furnishings and supple, high-back, burgundy leather chairs. Each course stands as the very definition of time-honored favorites, most notably the beef dishes, all of which are USDA Prime and dry-aged for 28 days to enhance tenderness and flavor. Succulent seafood dishes such as Grilled Swordfish and Whole Maine Lobster Gratinée are also classics in their own right. The Classic Caesar Salad, too, is prepared according to tradition, tableside and with gusto

Privee

Red Ginger’s chefs have created contemporary interpretations of Asian classics. The interior simply glows with ebony woods, a soothing waterfall wall and striking, modern Asian artworks. To complement the stunning decor, Red Ginger’s chefs have created contemporary interpretations of Asian classics. Begin with a Salad of Spicy Roast Duck and Watermelon with Cashews, Mint and Thai Basil. Savor a Malaysian Beef Penaeng with Coconut Rice and Paratha Roti. Or try Thai Vegetable Curry with Sweet Potatoes, Aubergine, Mushrooms and Basil in Green Curry Sauce. In Red Ginger, the gustatory pleasures are as striking as the visual ones.

Terrace Cafe

Terrace Cafe

Informal and carefree, the Terrace Café is wonderfully inviting any time of day--feel free to dine inside or alfresco at one of the shaded teak tables on the terrace. First thing in the morning, enjoy sumptuous breakfast selections. Come lunch, the expansive menu of international-inspired dishes changes entirely, beautifully complemented by flavorful roasted and rotisserie meats and the magic of the pizzeria’s oven. Feel free to dine inside or alfresco at one of the shaded teak tables on the terrace. Evenings, the impeccably clad wait staff shines, and the cuisine takes on a more sophisticated flair. Lobster tails and lamb chops are prepared to order, and freshly made hand-cut sushi and sashimi await your selection. Tomorrow, an entirely different series of menus awaits the opportunity to delight you.

Toscana

Waves Grill

Sometimes, the ultimate luxury is casual dining on all-American favorites, a style laid-back Waves Grill epitomizes. During lunch, the chefs grill gourmet burgers, tangy barbecue and succulent seafood to order in the open galley, accompanying them with side dishes like garden-fresh salads and crispy, hand-cut truffle fries dusted with grated aged parmesan.

Oceania_OClass_Oceania_Suite_Bedroom-3 - Wake up to an ocean view: Your Oceania Marina suite will provide you with the comfort and privacy you desire throughout your stay.

Patti Pietschmann

Los angeles, cruiseclout score: 95.0, oceania cruises’ marina: a sleek, sophisticated foodie paradise.

Marina, a comfortable, gorgeous looker in the  Oceania Cruises  fleet, was the first in the line’s new-build program and was joined by sister ship Riviera . They were clearly meant to be game-changers among midsize, balcony-studded cruise ships targeting reasonably well-heeled cruisers who appreciate luxury but revel in value pricing.

The Owners Suite aboard Oceania Marina.

With 1,250 passengers, the ship is larger than Oceania's Regatta , Insignia  and Nautica , but it retains the intimate feel of a smaller ship. Marina's look is well sculpted: sleek, elegant and sophisticated, with designer touches ranging from the Lalique Grand Staircase to the Owner's Suites furnished by the Ralph Lauren Home Collection. And while your fellow passengers will tend toward the upper crust, the atmosphere is hardly haughty. There's a casual vibe, and crew members offer smart, personalized service.

Oceania folds in some of the features extolled by lines that claim to be all-inclusive — exhibit A are the four no-charge alternative restaurants — though wine, drinks, shore excursions and gratuities are extra. In other words, you decide how you’re going to spend your money on board and what you’re going to spend it on.

Where Marina sails

Destinations:  Itineraries are worldwide and much in demand. Marina sails across the globe with cruises in and around Europe, Australia and New Zealand, New England and Canada, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, French Polynesia and the South Seas.

We found it almost remarkable on our 18-day cruise from Florida to California that a cruise through the Caribbean didn’t stop at a single island.

A woman at the table next to ours in Red Ginger , one of four complimentary alternative dining venues on board the then brand new ship, looked down at her miso-glazed sea bass wrapped in a  ti  leaf closed with a tiny green clothespin. Then she looked up at her dining companion with misty eyes. “I think I could eat here every night,” she said with a note of awe in her voice.

Richard (my first mate) and I boarded the ship in PortMiami. It was our first night on board and the Marina’s second voyage in her maiden season. By the time we were halfway through the 18-day inaugural voyage through the Panama Canal to San Francisco (via Los Angeles, where we disembarked), it was evident that the fourth vessel in Oceania Cruises’ fleet is clearly meant to be a game-changer among mid-size, balcony-studded luxury cruise ships. And in many ways, it is — particularly the food in those four specialty restaurants.

I thoroughly enjoyed Marina’s casual country-club style, semi-inclusive pricing, spaciousness and unusually generous number of balcony cabins —  95 percent of the total. But it’s truly the food that turns heads. That's mostly thanks to Frank Del Rio, the line’s founding CEO and chairman (he’s now CEO of parent company Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings), who pulls no punches on this matter: “We … (budgeted) more per guest for food than any other cruise company. Some spend that money on stage shows and dancing girls. We put it on the plate. We want the food to be the show, and the dining experience to be the entertainment.”

Dining on the Marina

Anyone who loves food will love it aboard the Marina, and it is a big reason why Oceania’s repeat passengers are enviably loyal. Even the Terrace Café’s lunchtime buffet is a surprising culinary event. Aboard other ships, the three-meal restaurant is often an afterthought. Not here. Like our fellow passengers, I stared open-mouthed at the paella displayed in the authentic huge copper paella pan — that’s something I would wager is a first at sea. Your faithful reporter herself waxed ecstatic over lamb curry that was ideal in every respect, save for the odd absence of chutney. Missteps that go unobserved on other ships tend to stand out on Marina precisely because they are so out of character.

A table setting at La Reserve aboard the Marina.

The Marina offers guests nine dining venues: the Grand Dining Room, four specialty restaurants  for no extra charge, two specialty restaurants for an extra fee and two casual spots.

Grand Dining Room: The ship's main dining room offers offers multiple courses of French-inspired Continental dishes and features fine china, crystal and silver alongside the formally attired wait staff, frescoes and domed ceiling. We found it to be big and largely impersonal, with an atmosphere that was a bit harried and with dishes too far removed from the promised a la minute (made to order). Service here slips a bit.

Here are the four no-fee alternative restaurants, which do require reservations:

  • Jacques : Oceania’s culinary godfather, the celebrated French chef Jacques Pepin, lends his name and his talents to the first restaurant with his name on land or sea. Decorated with rich fabrics, heirloom antiques, wood furnishings and art from Jacques' personal collection, the restaurant resembles a classic Parisian bistro. We ordered the smoked salmon-wrapped salmon tartar and it did not disappoiint.
  • Red Ginger: Another specialty restaurant, Red Ginger provides contemporary interpretations of Asian classics. Along with striking visuals that are rooted in the tradition of feng shui, Red Ginger's chefs have created a menu that draws from a variety of cuisines such as Thai, Malaysian and Indian.
  • Polo Grill : With decor that recalls Hollywood celebrities of another era, the Polo Grill offers the atmosphere of a classic steakhouse. This intimate restaurant offers guests old-time ambience and romantic moonlit views at night. We had a 20-ounce prime porterhouse steak, deftly prepared.
  • Toscana : With Tuscan recipes straight from Oceania's Italian culinary staff, this restaurant looks to create an authentic Tuscan experience. Toscana prepares its dishes with flavors rooted in family traditions, while sommeliers recommend a vintage to pair with each dish. I had the beef carpaccio.

Which alternative restaurant was the best? That’s like asking fraternity guys which Victoria’s Secret model they favor.

How do they offer these dining experiences without charging a fee? Well, unless demand is somehow absent, you will probably be limited to one dinner in each of the four restaurants during your cruise.

Privée : Oceania has decked out the private-dining Privée with Ferrari red carpeting, oversized white baby crocodile throne chairs, Baroque millwork and backlit onyx-clad walls. The goal is to create a refined yet intimate space for discerning foodies. The cost is $1,000 for up to 10 persons for a multi-course menu degustation.

La Reserve: Atop deck 12 is La Reserve by Wine Spectator, where wine tastings meet gourmet dinners. Daytime tasting menus offer vintages from the wine cellar selected by the head sommelier to reflect the region of the world in which you're sailing. Evenings are reserved for more elaborate affairs, such as seven-course gourmet dinners. Cost is $75 to cover the elevated wine pairings.

Casual options with open seating

Breakfast and lunch buffets at the Terrace Cafe offers an informal option for dining. Guests can dine indoors or outdoors, since the cafe opens onto both the teak-lined pool deck or aft onto the Terrace.  Waves Grill  is near the swimming pool and offers gourmet burgers, barbecue and seafood. The open galley allows you to observe the chefs in action while you sample fresh salads or hand-cut fries on the side.

All in all? What's inescapable is that Marina’s cuisine is as far above average as Lake Wobegon's children. This may be the first foodie destination ship.

Get your evening started with a colorful tropical drink in Oceania Riviera's Waves bar.

Bars & lounges

Martinis : Before dinner, Martinis is crowded as if gin was rationed and will make you feel you’re fighting for a drink in a Manhattan saloon an hour before the last bar car train leaves Grand Central Terminal for Old Greenwich. Martinis serves numerous incarnations of the classic cocktail in an atmosphere reminiscent of a private gentleman's club, featuring live piano music.

And, by the way, the wine lists have been paid attention, to, with lots of California bottles at prices that wouldn’t be surprising on land. On the other hand, bottled mineral water, soft drinks and espresso are available everywhere without charge.

Grand Bar: Before dinner, you can also sample a rare vintage or sip on a handcrafted cocktail amid the opulence of the Grand Bar.

Baristas : Want a quick low-key escape? Marina's coffee bar is right next to the library, with an arc of floor-to-ceiling windows that provides panoramic views of the sea. Baristas offers espressos, cappuccinos, pastries and homemade biscotti.

Marina Lounge: From headline acts to comedians and magicians to jazz ensembles, the ship's lounges offer nightly entertainment.

Horizons : An observation lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows, Horizons offers views and vistas while nursing a cocktail at the bar.

Enjoy the serene environment of the Canyon Ranch SpaClub on your cruise aboard Marina.

Entertainment & activities

Marina features three stage shows, "Con Molto!," "River Rhapsody" and "Groovin." All three are produced by Gary Musick Productions, an award-winning entertainment group that provides musical revues on cruise ships and resorts. Del Rio made it plain that anything not having to do with food assumes a secondary role. We attended one show and decided our time was better spent reading books from the elegant library.

There’s a gym and a casino, of course, and the Canyon Ranch Spa at Sea provides pricey pamper options — a facial set me back $150 plus tip. But there is a big-for-sea swimming pool whose length we could never discover — much head-scratching and blank stares — but we pace-estimated it at 35 feet in length.

High tea aboard the Marina is served at 4 pm each day in the  Horizons observation lounge. Pastry chefs offer a collection of English-style finger sandwiches, scones and other edibles.

Enrichment on board

You'll find an elaborate Culinary Center designed in conjunction with Bon Appetit magazine that affords the food-obsessed the opportunity to prep and cook along with an expert chef in a professional kitchen setting. Now, that’s entertainment.

The ship also offers a hands-on program for budding artists called the Artist Loft , a creative enrichment center where artists-in-residence offer step-by-step instruction in their areas of expertise. Passengers can learn how to paint in a variety of mediums, take needlepoint or create arts and crafts.

Wake up to an ocean view in Marina's O Class Suite.

Staterooms on Marina

Standard staterooms measure 262 square feet, hardly spacious but noticeably comfier than the 212-square-foot cabins found in Oceania’s smaller ships. Décor is attractive with dark woods, bright modern art, a flat-screen TV and a posh bedding system similar to those found at upscale hotel chains. Bathrooms have a full-size bathtub and separate shower stall of, shall we shall, compact and sometimes painful dimensions.

We were in a concierge-level cabin, a category amped with 1,000-count bed linens, supposedly priority specialty restaurant reservations (nope, not on our sailing), the option to receive full room service breakfast and the use of a laptop — nice, though we had our own. But given the endlessly balky wi-fi in our stateroom and the slow speed and high cost, the perk was considerably diminished.

Other amenities

Internet & connecting with loved ones.

Passengers can connect with friends and family back home or monitor business through the ship's 24-hour Internet center, Oceania@Sea, or use the ship's onboard wireless. Laptops are provided in all suites aboard the Marina as well as in the ship's Concierge Level Veranda Staterooms. Passengers in all Owner's, Vista and Oceania Suites get the use of an iPad throughout the voyage. (Starting in late 2015, Oceania is providing free Internet to guests who book premium suites; others will pay  99 cents per minute or $28 for the day. We can't vouch that the connectivity issues have been solved.)

Letters and postcards with the appropriate postage can be mailed at the Reception Desk.

A Dubai Marina cruise without dinner or lunch can last anywhere between 1 and 3 hours, while evening dinner cruises usually last around 2 hours.

Yes, Dubai Marina is a beautiful neighborhood and it’s very walkable. Whether you’re taking a stroll during the day or after dusk, the marina’s boardwalk is a beautiful place to walk along.

Prices for Dubai Marina cruises depend on the experience you choose, but they range between $20 for a 1-hour Marina sightseeing tour to around $280 for a private yacht cruise . A pricier experience would be a romantic sunset cruise with sushi and drinks for around $400 for two.

This New Yacht Is Sailing to Gorgeous, Lesser-known Ports in the Caribbean Sea — and I Was on Board With 'Below Deck's' Chef Ben

E merald Cruises' new Emerald Sakara ship brings guests to smaller ports in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, with an onboard marina and the occasional Bravo-lebrity.

With a couple dozen guests looking on, chef Ben Robinson was showing how to slice and dice a fresh red snapper. “You kind of feel him — but you don’t fondle him,” said Robinson, the fan favorite from the Bravo reality show Below Deck, who’s always ready with a quip. As he pulled a perfect filet off the bone, he explained how to salt the fish and that there’s no more important relationship than the one you have with your fishmonger. “My advice is to always be friendly,” he noted. “I like to support my mom-and-pop [businesses]. If you become familiar with them, they’ll say, ‘Hey, I got this in this morning.’”

The cooking demo, which also featured a ceviche how-to and tips on knife sharpening, was one of many “Chef Ben” moments on my trip aboard Emerald Sakara . It’s the newest 100-passenger vessel from Emerald Cruises, which launched in the fall of 2023, a sibling vessel to the Emerald Azzurra .

During an eight-day voyage in March from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, the reality personality was definitely one of the star attractions. Robinson spent several evenings in the galley, creating special dishes such as a panko-crusted veal striploin stuffed with pesto.

He also hosted a well-attended Q&A about his life in the kitchen — and spent plenty of time connecting with fans, many of whom booked the trip specifically to chop it up with Below Deck alum.

“We definitely booked because of Ben,” said Shannon Welnel , a Montana-based travel advisor who had lots of praise for his cuisine — and the yacht-like atmosphere on board the 100-passenger ship. Other guests I spoke with admitted they hadn’t seen much Below Deck, but were intrigued by the chance to chill with a Bravo-lebrity.

Emerald Sakara

  • With a max of just 100 passengers, Emerald Sakara feels at times like a private yacht, with no lines and no crowds, and outstanding service from a highly experienced crew.
  • Minimalist rooms recall the stripped down aesthetic of Miami Beach or Mykonos, Greece, with pops of color from Missoni Home accents and a sleek-yet-functional bathroom with plenty of storage space.
  • While this small ship has but one restaurant and one poolside cafe, there’s plenty of choice when it comes to meals, whether you’re hitting the breakfast or lunch buffet or choosing from the dinner menu.
  • The onboard marina, which is open in favorable weather conditions, offers watersports and swimming off the stern of the ship.
  • Easy to understand and mostly inclusive pricing covers meals, beverages at mealtime, many tours, and surprisingly speedy Wi-Fi.

The intimate-ship vibe was also one reason the chef wanted to hop aboard. “This definitely has more of a yacht vibe than any other [ship] I've been on,” Robinson told me one afternoon. “A hundred passengers is not a lot,” he said. “I've been on boats with 2,500 passengers, and you really do feel like you're anonymous. But here, the service is great, and you really are treated as an individual and someone important. And you kind of lose that on the big boats.”

While Robinson doesn’t have immediate plans to join another Emerald cruise, he told me that there were plenty of parallels between his life on megayachts and what the Sakara offers its guests. “It’s been incredible,” he said.

I had to agree. The Sakara certainly has much to offer, both in spite of its smaller size and because of it. While it’s available to book by the cabin, like any cruise ship, it still manages to feel at times like a private yacht, particularly when it sails to less-commonly visited ports such as Culebra, on Puerto Rico, or St. Bart’s. In the latter, we dropped anchor near Eric Schmidt’s yacht, Whisper , and had the whole day to explore the glitzy island and its capital, Gustavia. (After a drive around in the morning, I managed to catch the beautiful sunset from the lovely little Shell Beach, right in town.)

“The benefit of being on a small cruise ship like this one is that we can enter small ports and areas where others can’t,” said Robert Kuznin, the captain of Sakara , who previously worked with several cruise lines, including Paul Gauguin, Seabourn, and Virgin Voyages. “For example, when we dropped anchor in Esperanza Bay,” he explained about our stop at the island of Vieques, “there were only two meters under the keel — and that was the shallowest I’ve ever been!”

The ability to go places that larger ships can’t was also on display one morning on St. Kitts, one of the final stops of my trip. It was still early in the morning, but already four mega-ships were docked in Basseterre, the island’s capital. Instead of tying up next to them on the busy cruise pier, we dropped anchor just off the beach in South Friar’s Bay, a long sweep of sand in the island’s southern reaches. There were no crowds to contend with, no paperwork hassles, no touts offering dodgy cab rides. A five-minute tender ride to the beach was all it took to meet our local guide. Time from leaving the breakfast buffet to our first stop? About 25 minutes. Even the most efficient mega-ship would struggle to make that happen — and they can’t drop anchor right off the one of the best beaches on the island.

Other moments aboard Sakara felt like something out of Below Deck . One afternoon, I made my way to the yacht’s marina, a platform at the stern stocked with lounge chairs, refreshments, and water toys such as a floating trampoline and inflatable sea kayaks. I jumped off the stern into the Caribbean and then tried out the ship’s Seabob, a floating gadget that’s like a cross between a Jet Ski and an electric scooter.

As I continued my joy ride, I could see another vessel anchored just north of us. Turns out, it was David Geffen’s private yacht , Rising Sun . Of course, we were there first.

Here’s a closer look at all the amenities of the Emerald Sakara , which sails seasonally in coastal waters in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean Sea.

The Staterooms

Welcome to your starship: the stripped down, white-and-gray cabins on Sakara feel sci-fi chic, particularly when the accent lighting is switched on. They’re also, thankfully, spacious and super functional, with ample storage space (including a safe), a small minibar, a coffee station, and a clever headboard built-in that’s a great spot for your charging devices and water bottle. Most of the 50 rooms and suites have verandas; ocean-view staterooms are the exception. Bathrooms are just big enough, with plenty of storage, and are stocked with Espa products and a hair dryer. My cabin, 421, was a 300-square-foot balcony suite toward the aft of the ship on deck four: I never once heard noise from the surrounding cabins or in the hallway, though I did occasionally notice sounds and vibrations from the vessel, something that is common on even the largest of ships. A note on power plugs: my stateroom had U.S.-style outlets throughout as well as USB-A charging ports on either side of the bed, a nice touch.

Bars and Restaurants

Because Sakara is smaller than most cruise ships, it can’t compete on sheer volume of bars and restaurants. Still, the food on board is solid. La Cucina is the only true dining room, with both indoor and outdoor seating; it has somewhat limited hours compared to the round-the-clock dining options on bigger vessels. That being said, I certainly didn’t go hungry: a breakfast buffet is complemented by traditional à la minute options such as omelets and pancakes; lunch is also buffet style with a carving station. Dinner is more restaurant style, with options from an ever-changing daily menu plus always available classics such as Caesar salad, shrimp cocktail, grilled salmon, and spaghetti bolognese on offer. (Many dietary restrictions and preferences can be accommodated.)

On my voyage, chef Robinson put together several special plates, including what might’ve been the best dish of the week: a sesame-crusted seared yellowfin tuna with celeriac puree. The Below Deck star also put together a panko veal striploin roulade one night and, another evening, offered a citrus-cured hamachi with, in a touch of molecular gastronomy, “mango spheres.” Elsewhere on board, a poolside cafe, Aqua Café, has quick bites like burgers and flatbreads, as well as sweets and coffee pulled from a Cimbali espresso machine. The cocktails served in the Amici Lounge and the Sky Bar were consistently excellent, mixed by a talented team of pros who’ve previously worked on Seabourn ships and in some of Dubai’s top hotels. One weaker spot was the selection of wine on board: pours at mealtimes are included, but they didn’t rock my boat. A short list of “chairman’s wines,” available at extra cost, included a couple by-the-bottle finds such as 2013 vintage Cristal ($650) and some mid-tier Bordeaux and Burgundy options.

Where Emerald Sakara Sails

Though small, this ship isn’t an expedition yacht. Rather, it’s specifically designed for warm-weather coastal cruising, meaning it spends the lion’s share of its time in places such as the Caribbean and, in the Northern Hemisphere’s summer months, the Mediterranean. My trip aboard was spent entirely in the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean, where passages between ports were short and the seas were often calm. (We did occasionally encounter some swells of up to two meters, or 6.6 feet. I saw many guests wearing medicated patches to prevent motion sickness throughout the trip.) Sakara typically spends a season of several months in a given region, with a variety of cruise lengths offered, ranging from six to 24 days. In 2024, the ship will spend April through November in the Mediterranean. Sakara will return to the Caribbean at the end of the year, through April 2025.

Shore Excursions

Tours off the ship were a strong suit for Emerald, at least on my voyage. Most stops offered a variety of activities, ranging from a simple transfer to a nearby beach to a full-on, multi-hour tour. Usually, I found myself ashore with a very small group of folks — fewer than a dozen — and all the guides Emerald arranged were true pros. Passengers raved about a kayak paddle through the bioluminescent bay on Vieques, something I sadly didn’t try myself. I did, however, enjoy a short guided hike on the island of St. John, to the pristine beach along Salomon Bay, which was all but deserted. The organization of excursions felt flawless to me, thanks no doubt to the crew and shore excursion manager, Pilar Atencio. Worth a mention, too, were Atencio’s detailed briefings on what to expect each day. While these sorts of “port talks'' are common on ships of all sizes, they felt particularly useful on Sakara because of how intimate our groups were; many passengers made a point of attending the pre-dinner talks every night, for info on what to expect about our anchorage, historical background on each island, and detailed info about what each tour offering would entail.

Amenities and Entertainment

Call it small but mighty: Sakara has all the essentials, which is a bit of feat for a ship this size. A cozy spa has wellness and beauty treatments, as well as a small hairstyling and facial studio; morning yoga and stretching are available on deck. The fitness center, with a few cardio machines, a Peloton bike, and a variety of weights and other gear gets the job done. The smallish pool and a top-deck whirlpool were lovely — though I spent most of my time in the ocean: the Sakara ’s marina deck is a key feature, and it was open several afternoons during my trip. It’s like the greatest pool party you’ve ever been to, complete with piña coladas, sea kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and a trampoline, right off the stern of the ship. It is, truly, as much fun as it sounds like, though it is subject to the whims of weather and ocean currents. Also available in some destinations are e-bikes from Gocycle, which are available on a first-come, first-served basis; during my trip, several guests gave them a spin on the island of Vieques. Sakara also carries a ton of snorkeling gear and beach towels, which passengers can borrow whenever they like. In terms of performances, this isn’t the vessel for Broadway-style shows, but guitarist Jamie Ferguson and voyage director Nathalie Millet added plenty of live music to the trip.

Family-friendly Offerings

The youngest passengers I spoke with on my cruise were in their 20s — and they were traveling with their parents. Sakara is perhaps the perfect ship for families traveling with adult children, since it offers such a diverse array of activities to suit different tastes and activity levels, while visiting intriguing destinations. The ship is also intimate enough that everybody can gather easily for meals — or a swim off the stern — without fighting the crowds common on larger vessels. On the other hand, Sakara is probably not the best choice for families with younger children: there’s no kid-specific programming, and you’re likely to be the only ones aboard with little ones. “Emerald Cruises yachts are recommended for people aged 12 and up, and they must be accompanied by and share a cabin with an adult aged 18 or [older],” a spokesperson shared with T+L.

Accessibility

Sakara is probably best described as somewhat accessible: the ship has elevators to all decks and the crew was, on my trip, very accommodating to those with mobility challenges. There are handrails throughout, and bathrooms feature shower grab bars. That being said, several areas of the ship — the outdoor dining terrace, for example — require navigating at least one step even once you’ve reached the deck in question by elevator. “Due to the nature and size of the ships, wheelchairs and scooters are not allowed to be used on board,” a spokesperson told T+L. When the ship is at anchor, it’s only possible to go ashore by tender or Zodiac, both of which could be challenging for those with limited mobility. As Emerald’s FAQ explains: “Guests with limited mobility will require help from a companion, since the crew is limited.” Also of note: many announcements are made only by loudspeaker with no hearing-impaired alternative.
