coldplay tour 2023 cardiff support act

British rock group Coldplay are preparing for a two-night concert in the Welsh capital this week.

Having recently hosted global superstar Beyonce at the Principality Stadium as well as Tom Jones, the city is gearing up once again to see thousands descend on Cardiff for the next big gig.

Coldplay, led by frontman Chris Martin, will play the huge open air concert on Tuesday 6 and Wednesday 7 June as part of their Music Of The Spheres world tour.

The band, known for their anthemic tunes and impressive light displays during their live concerts, are due to play a variety of songs from their catalogue dating back to 2000.

The sell-out show's tour has been heralded for its groundbreaking set which includes green initiatives such as a show powered by 100% renewable energy in almost all locations.

The tour also claims to have the world’s first tourable battery system, power bikes and kinetic dancefloors allowing fans to help power the show.

Fans have been encouraged to travel by green transport and there is a tree planted for every ticket sold.

And Chris Martin led by example on Tuesday morning when he was spotted getting off a train at Cardiff Central .

So, what time are Coldplay due to perform, what road closures are in place and what can't you take into the concert? Here's everything you need to know.

The gates at Principality Stadium open to the public at 5pm with Coldplay expected to start performing around 8:30pm with the show finishing approximately two hours later.

Who are the support acts?

There will be two support acts performing before the main show begins.

Welsh singer-songwriter Hana Lili, will be the first act to take to the stage. She will be followed by Glasgow synth pop group Chvrches.

Road closures

To ensure that people can get into and out of the stadium safely, there will be a full city centre road closure from 4pm until midnight on both days.

As a result, the M4 and surrounding network is expected to be very busy for the event and people are urged to plan ahead.

To avoid congestion, people are being urged to use the Park & Ride at Leckwith Stadium or the Park & Walk facility at County Hall in Cardiff Bay.

More detail on the road closures can be found here.

Banned items

The following items are all prohibited inside the Principality stadium: Alcohol, illegal substances (drugs), smoking - including any form of electronic cigarette except within designated areas, fireworks, flares, pyrotechnics, air horns, musical instruments, smoke canisters, laser pointers, bottles, glasses, cans, cooking devices, banners, poles, golf-type umbrellas, selfie-sticks, knives or any form of blade, all promotional commercial political and religious printed matter, banners, flags, signs. Full list here.

These are the songs the band reportedly played at their recent Manchester dates and are expected to play similar tracks in the Welsh capital.

Further travel advice

Transport for Wales will be putting on extra trains where possible in and out of Cardiff, but services are still expected to be very busy.

People are urged to allow plenty of time for their journey.

TfW is carrying out infrastructure work across the Core Valley Lines network for the South Wales Metro, resulting in buses replacing rail on services north of Pontypridd (Treherbert and Merthyr Tydfil Lines) and Mountain Ash (Aberdare Line) on June 6 and 7.

Post-event queues for mainline rail services will be on Central Square and queues for Valleys services will be to the rear of the station. Cardiff Queen Street station will close at 22:00, except for direct journeys to Cardiff Bay.

Great Western Railway are also putting on extra trains to help people get home and they will run from Cardiff Central to Swansea, Newport, Bristol and Swindon.

Bus services will be diverted while the city centre road closures are in place.

Disabled drivers are advised to use Sophia Gardens. Disabled parking is also available at various private car parks.

People living in Cardiff are being encouraged to cycle or walk to the venue.

Cardiff Council said: "Research shows us that 52% of car trips made in the Welsh capital are less than 5km. This is a distance that can be comfortably cycled in 20 minutes.

"We also know that 28% of Cardiff residents who currently do not cycle would like to do so.

"When the roads are congested this makes cycling an even more attractive option as travel by bicycle would be quicker than a car during rush hours or during big events."

Coldplay announce support acts for 2023 European tour

The band's massive 'Music Of The Spheres' tour is extending into this summer

Chris Martin of Coldplay

Coldplay have announced the support acts for their upcoming 2023 UK and European ‘Music Of The Spheres’  tour dates.

  • R EAD MORE:  Coldplay live in London: a fantastical, feel-good bonanza that delivers on a bold promise

The band have been on tour across the planet since last spring, and played a host of UK stadium gigs last summer including six  sold-out Wembley Stadium gigs .

This summer, the band will return to the UK and Europe for further stadium dates following gigs in South America. Across May, June and July, the band will play Portugal, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and more, with two new UK dates in Manchester and Cardiff.

The new dates will kick off in Coimbra, Portugal on May 17, before the band will play two shows at Manchester’s Etihad Stadium on May 31 and June 1.

Leading the list of support names for the stadium shows are Griff and Chvrches , the latter of whom supported the band in South America, with vocalist Lauren Mayberry joining them on stage in São Paulo.

Other bands set to support Coldplay include Hinds and Porij . See the full dates and corresponding support acts below and buy tickets here .

Reviewing one of Coldplay’s 2022 Wembley gigs ,  NME  said: “It’s a joyful spectacle; a masterclass in how a massive pop show can be done. The band seem genuinely thrilled at the reaction, too. “Thank you for coming. These days, it’s so difficult to get to see a show,” Chris notes appreciatively at one point. “Thank you for coming and restoring our faith in humanity; for being peaceful and singing together.” The roars in response indicate that the feeling is mutual.”

In a recent interview with NME , Chvrches said they were “out of their comfort zone” when supporting Coldplay, and that it helped them develop as a band.

Mayberry said: “My mood on it goes and swings and roundabouts. One minute I’m very excited about it, and then the realisation of what it actually is sinks in and I shit my pants. There’s a lot of pressure on everybody, but especially on the front person.

“I think to cover that amount of ground and figure out how to communicate and connect in that space is quite a big challenge.”

Coldplay in Cardiff 2023: Who is the support at the Principality Stadium gigs?

Coldplay are back in Cardiff after a long six years, with their Music of the Spheres tour, and are performing at the Principality Stadium. But what acts are supporting the band known for their vibrant and colourful shows?

Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion perform Music of the Spheres over two nights on Tuesday, June 6 and Wednesday, June 7, and thousands of people will descend on the city to put on their now-famous twinkly wristbands, bounce huge colourful balls off their heads and probably a special guest with a Welsh connection (fingers crossed).

We have the support act details below if you are attending the gig and need to know more.

Read more : What to expect if you're going to see Coldplay in Cardiff

Who are Coldplay's support act?

Coldplay's gigs in Cardiff will see two acts warm up the crowd ahead of the big guns - CHVRCHES and Welsh singer Hana Lili.

Formed in Glasgow in 2011, CHVRCHES broke out with their debut single The Mother We Share Across their four UK top 10 albums, the band have amassed over 234 million UK streams and 1.7 billion global streams to date. Their most recent, 2021 album Screen Violence' saw widespread acclaim.

In 2022 they have returned with single, Over which sees them team up with producer-songwriter Oscar Holter (The Weeknd, Charli XCX, Coldplay and BTS) for a soaring, alt-pop anthem.

Also on the bill is Hana who is a self-produced indie pop artist and songwriter who learned how to produce songs in her bedroom.

She recently released her EP Existential, along with its titular track. Hana explains: “The EP follows the evolution of being happy with my own solitude. It’s a chronological journey and it's an honest account from the stark loneliness of the summer months, reconnecting with friends, fixing relationships, learning to be alone and questioning everything, even our existence. Writing songs has always been an outlet for me, and feels more like a need than a want.”

Coldplay are back in the UK

Coldplay will play a massive show at Cardiff's Principality Stadium next summer. The band have added a huge string of extra dates to their popular Music of Spheres World Tour 2023. The British rock band will visit Cardiff and Manchester as part of their major world tour, it was announced on Monday.

It comes after the band completed a triumphant run of six sold out nights at London’s Wembley Stadium. The further European and UK stadium shows for their Music Of The Spheres World Tour in summer 2023 include visits to Portugal, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands, alongside UK shows in Manchester and Cardiff.

Since the band’s record-breaking tour began in Costa Rica in March 2022 more than four million tickets have been sold for the dates in Latin America, North America and Europe, which have attracted rave reviews from fans and critics alike. The tour has also been heralded for its groundbreaking set of sustainability initiatives which include a show powered by 100% renewable energy in almost all locations; the world’s first tourable battery system (made from 40 BMW electric car batteries); power bikes and kinetic dancefloors allowing fans to help power the show; solar panels and wind turbines at every venue; a pledge to cut tour emissions by 50%; incentives to encourage fans to travel by green transport; and one tree planted for every ticket sold.

The new tour dates were teased via Easter eggs in the band’s new video for Humankind which premiered last week. To the excitement of the band’s eagle-eyed global following, the video also hinted at further shows being announced for south-east Asia and North America.

Coldplay rose to prominence at the turn of millennium with the release of ‘Yellow’ in 2000 before their anthemic brand of pop/rock led to the band becoming one of the biggest acts of the early 21st century.

Consisting of Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion, the group formed in 1996. However, it was not until 1999 that they began to attract public interest with a string of early EPs, a new label in the shape of Parlophone and an appearance at Glastonbury.

The band’s debut record, Parachute, was released in 2000 along with the release of ‘Yellow’, a song that peaked at number four in the UK chart and has become one of Coldplay’s staple songs.

Success continued with their third album, X&Y (2005), becoming the bestselling record of the year and their fourth, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friend (2008), proved to be one of the fastest selling in UK music history.

2015’s A Head Full of Dreams saw a clear evolution for the group with a new sound and collaborations with the likes of Beyonce and Noel Gallagher. Throughout their career, Coldplay have sold over 100 million albums making them the most successful band of the 21st century.

Released in October 2021, Music of the Spheres is Coldplay’s ninth, and most recent, album. Featuring Selena Gomez, We Are King, Jacob Collier, BTS and Jon Hopkins; the record debuted at number one in the UK chart.
