Need Help - Broke the Antenna Stud Off

  • Add to quote

This was posted in 2012 with no answer. But I broke the antenna stud off the tour pack. Does anyone know how to replace it? I have purchased a new stud and antenna. From the looks of the new studd it should just purll right out with an extractor? Thanks.

I guess I should mention it's an 05 ultra classic. I understand that some studs you can unscrew and pull them out and others are molded in and you need to replace the whole wrap around light on the tour pack.

Miles Tequillya

This will not answer your queation... Some pictures might help coax an answer from someone...I use a internal antenna and don't have my antennas on at all... I cover the threads with vacuum tube covers... Sent from Motorcycle.com App

Dave63

The entire antenna mount is $35 off eBay. You can spent time trying to drill it but personally, I'd just replace it. Sent from Motorcycle.com App

I figured it out. the connector on the inside of the tour pack just unscrews from the antenna stub then the stub just pulls out. I then just stick the new one in and screw the connector on. Simple.

Glad it worked out for you!

Replacing antennas on Ultra Classic

  • Add to quote

Hey Everyone, I have an 08 Ultra Classic. I am tired of the long whip antennas. I read somewhere I can replace the antenna with a commercial off the shelf antenna, such as GM antenna from an Autoparts Store. I bought one from Advance Auto for 10 buck (sure beats what the HD shop sells them for). Here are my questions: 1. Does this work? 2. If so, will it work if I replace the CB and Radio Antennas with teh same type off the shelf antennas? 3. Looking at the bike from the back, which antenna is the CB and which is the radio? 4. Has anyone done this? If so, do you instructions on how to properly remove the stock Antennas? Thanks all, We are supposed to have record high temps in NC (mid 70s) . I am looking forward to getting some riding in. Take care..

mgb939

Any antenna probably will work. I bought shorties from J&L in Az. they work. Right side. I have to remove ant when I cover the bike, loosen set screw and unscrew the ant. I mix and match and it doesn't seem to make any difference on reception. I never put the set screw back in, ant stay put.

2010hdultra

The am fm may work fine. But if you actually use your cb then you need to get a cb antenna made for your bike. If you use an off the shelf am fm antenna it is not designed to broadcast cb frequencies. And if the standing wave is off, which it will, you can burn the transmit circuits out on you cb side. If memory serves me correct its the right side is cb. If you just doing it for show then get what ever. But if you use cb get a set from dealer or something made for cb and radio. ...---... ...---... ...---.... ...---... I have lost my mind. I have ventured out to find it. If it returns before me, please hold it until I return. Thank You.

I also think the CB antenna is on the right side when facing the rear.

gusotto

If you buy the shorty H-D antennas, there is one for the AM/FM radio and one for the CB. CB is on the right. You can verify it with the load coil in the Tour-Pak. Don't put them on the wrong side. You can blow out the CB with the wrong antenna. The replacement Harley antenna ($30) is marked at the antenna base (CB or AM/FM). They screw on, don't have a set screw. I had the long whips on my '07 Ultra but took them off. When staying at a motel, I unscrew the antennas and place in the Tour-Pak. Too easy for someone to otherwise get your antennas.

hogcowboy

I just did the SWR on a friends 08 with the shorty J&M antennas. it was 2.0. The OEM whips were 1.6. 2.0 is too high and may affect your range. Any higher and may damage your CB.. I would not use off the shelf antennas. You could probably get by with the Shorty's sold but I would have the SWR checked...

Geoff of NV

1L243, What's involved in checking the SWR and if it's in need of adjustment, how do you do it?

Rendell

I'm lovin this thread. I have tried to callout to truckers I see as I'm riding, through full face intercom helmet, and PTT button. I've only get increased static back.. These are trucks that are approaching oncoming and less than a 1/2 mile distance. I'm looking to get it tune So I can talk to my other ultra riding friends while we are riding. I'll be watching this thread.

I think if you stay with the OEM CB antenna from the Manufacturer you won't have to worry about the SWR. The radio and the antennae are designed for each other. If your getting static or poor performance on a HD system you could be having another problem or a bad CB.. You can get an cheap SWR meter from Radio Shack. The problem your going to have is connecting the SWR meter to the HD CB. The industry standard screw on CB connector is much bigger than the one on the HD CB. Technically your supposed to connect the SWR meter as close to the CB as possible. However the CB antenna connection under the Tour Pak liner (right side) is more like a standard AM/FM car antenna connector. What I did was I had the two cables that came with the SWR meter made with a male and female AM/FM connector so I could plug into the HD CB connection under the Tour Pak liner. PS If your getting static make sure your running the right resistor type spark plugs for your bike.

When I bought the bike used it has short antenna, that both look Identical. I am unsure of the plugs, Did buy a set of stock OEM HD Plugs. I will change them and check for a difference... I am sure they are OEM. I don't want the whips, So I may purchase a set of the HD OEM short flexible antenna and see what happens as well. SO to be certain, the CB is the antenna that is on the right, as you are standing behind and looking at the back of the tour pack?

If you got the bike used it would be good idea to check your spark plugs to make sure you have the right resistor type. If you go with shorty antennas I would go with the ones sold by HD for your specific year as it will make a difference. http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?WebLogicSession=K0fM2PvGBo6a9U4uFG5CFv4gSEtQdwykU2d8Z5NskKsgiV24lKTU!3583657!hiwpbmsp04.ihd.hd!7005!8005&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448772523&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302290635&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302290635&bmUID=1253318413010&bmLocale=en_US Standing at the rear of the bike the CB antenna is the one on the right side. The antennae on my 2009 are marked at the bottom on each antenna for AM/FM or CB. If you get the shorty check them out and see if they are marked. I don't know if they are or not. If your having real problems with static, squealing and low performance you could have a bad CB.. The reason I got my SWR in the first place was for my 2006 Ultra. From day one the bike had poor CB performance with alot of static. Finally got HD to replace it and fixed the problem. But not until I had eliminated everything else.

elPrez

Found the cb to be pretty useless (for me), put an antenna in the faring and got rid of those on the tour pak altogether. Love the look.

That would work. Just turn the CB off so you don't transmit without an antenna... For me I ride with other guys who have Ultras and somebody is always saying something, which could be a bad or good thing...

yep, if I replace the antennas and the plugs and it don't work, I will take it to HD, and have them fix it. I have the extended warranty..

04ctd

FWIW, i used the Advance auto parts shorties for a long time. NEVER use them with the CB, and I only use FM radio for local traffic, keep a MP3 CD in there, the HD radio will only read up to about 70 songs (you can get ~120 on a CD) but keep the receipt, they break about every other month, and it just got old having to replace them finally put long ones back one.

I removed the wire part of the antenna from the tour pak mount, cut it off and reinstalled it. The top of the antenna is threaded for the ball on the end so do not cut the top. The entire job took less than ten minutes, including gathering tools. I have tested the radio reception and it seemed fine to me but, I am sure it is not as good as the longer antenna. I have never used the cb but I see no reason why it would not work.

RF_R_US

I'm going to jump on this thread as am learning about my newly acquired '05 FLH Ultra Classic. It has the CB and CD in it and I'm wondering if there is any advice on the list for getting headsets that will work other than the HD pieces. The PO didn't have them for me and I'd like to get all the electronics working right away so any advice would help. Is there a thread or copy of the radio owner's manual available online as well? Thanks, John

Got mine from IMC Motorcom .

CrazyBlonde

I have two friends that went with the shorties and their CB's sounded bad..... Seemed to be a direct link to the antenna's....

bigbadal

I tried to switch to the shorties...didn't work for the cb...went back to the whip...works good.

Good to know BigBadAl.

I have a 2012 Limited with the HD shorty antennas and a buddy has a 2011 with the original whip antennas. We were out Monday with a 3rd guy on a 2015 Limited with whip antennas. The 2015 hung back while the 12 and the 11 rode on to check what effect the shorty's really had. We were out over a 1 1/2 mile apart from him and found very low or even no difference in the range between the long whips and the shorty's. He also said there wasn't any difference in static. I know that that isn't very far but for a bike, that's good. I think the HD shorty's do perform better than an aftermarket thus the $$ can be justified.

I'm running the H-D shorty antenna's on my '07 Ultra and don't have any problem with them. Rode with another couple (Iowa-California) and we didn't have any trouble hearing/talking to each other. Very handy when letting the other person know when a stop was needed or an exit would be needed. I think the H-D antenna's work fine. Only reason I swapped from whips was easier to get the cover on.

Tour Pak antenna stud covers

GermanyBert

  • Add to quote

I don't use my radio or CB so I plan to just remove the antennas. I am gonna leave the antenna stud on though so if I decided later to use the radio or CB, I still can. Question is does HD or any aftermarket company make covers that screw on the studs? If so, where can I buy them?

Rowdy

I had the same issue on mine. I picked up what were supposed to be "the covers" from HD, but they don't fit correctly. Too big in diameter, and not long enough to cover the stud completly. I wrapped the stud with electrical tape, and put the cover on. It's pretty hard to tell, but still bugs the crap out of me. That was for the CB side, on the Radio side, I just left the shorty antenna on until I can find a suitable cover. Rowdy

CHAINSAW

Rubber vacuum hose ends. Buy the variety pack at an auto parts store. Couple bucks. Stays on , looks good.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
