Darwin travel FAQs
Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.
Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).
However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.
What is the weather like in the Northern Territory?
The climate in the Northern Territory is different depending on which part of the region you're travelling to.
The southern part of the territory experiences a desert climate with very dry, hot summers and warm winters.
The northern part of the state enjoys more of a tropical climate with two distinct seasons, a dry one from May to October and a wet one from November to April.
Regardless of which part you're travelling to, you can expect the average temperature to be in the high 20°s to low 30°s during every season.
When is the best time to visit the Northern Territory?
The best time to visit the Northern Territory would be during the winter months of June, July, and August as temperatures are still high without being extreme and there's less expected rainfall than in the summer months. Due to this, the humidity levels are also quite low making it easier to spend lengthy periods of time outside.
You generally want to avoid travelling to NT from November to April, especially if you're destination is the top end, due to potential cyclones.
Can I swim in Kakadu National Park?
The short answer is yes. However, you need to take note of a few precautions before racing to the water’s edge as it can be dangerous if you don’t know what to look out for.
Kakadu is a tropical destination with two major seasons: hot and wet (November to March), and hot and dry (April to October). The wet season poses more risks for swimming as some areas are susceptible to flash flooding and rapid currents during heavy rain. Some waterways are also home to crocodiles.
How many national parks are in Northern Territory?
The Northern Territory boasts 24 national parks. From captivating waterfalls to jaw-dropping landscapes, here are a few of our favourite Northern Territory national parks:
- Nitmiluk National Park
- Litchfield National Park
- Kakadu National Park
- Umbrawarra Nature Park
- Limmen National Park
- Flora River Nature Park
Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?
We are committed to making travel widely accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.
We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?
Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

The best darwin tours: see the top end of australia.
There isn’t anywhere in the world quite like Darwin.
Completely isolated from any other city in Australia, Darwin is synonymous with dramatic weather, crocodiles (they don’t run around the centre, don’t worry!), modern and ancient Aboriginal history, unique surrounding nature and… a lot of drunk backpackers.
Even if you don’t want to join in with the drunk backpackers, it’s well worth spending some time to experience Darwin city centre. There’s some intriguing war history to explore at the Darwin Military Museum, you can learn all about the harsh climate, the unique flora and fauna and Aboriginal history at the AGMNT, you can cool off in the lagoon (don’t swim in the open water – there are crocs out there!) and you can enjoy some of the restaurants or cafes.
But the real beauty of Darwin is in the surroundings.
Kakadu, Litchfield, the Tiwi Islands and Katherine should all be on your Australia bucket list. These Darwin tours will show you some of the highlights of the city, as well as the stunning national parks of the state. Darwin is a great base to explore the best of the NT. Note: I don’t partake in, write about or have anything to do with animal tourism . Even though I’m wary petrified of crocodiles, they still are beautiful creatures that deserve to be treated with respect. So I won’t mention anything that involves crocodile tourism here, and would advise people against avoiding them as well.
The Best Darwin Tours
Inner city darwin tours.
I give Darwin a bit of slack, mainly due to the OTT party atmosphere of Mitchell Street. But if you stay off this drag, there’s quite a bit that’s worth exploring. Taking part on one of the tours of Darwin will help you see the best of the city. The hop on hop off bus will take you around the highlights of the city, so it’s great to use as transportation.
You’ll swing by the Botanical Gardens, the Military Museum, the Mindl Beach Markets and more. You can get off wherever you want and you’ll learn a little about the city on the way. Click here to learn more about the hop-on-hop-off Darwin bus tour If you’ve got limited time in Darwin half day tours might be your answer. A walking tour will help you get to grips with the tropical city, deatailing the way it has become the city it is today, including the devastations like bombings and cyclones. Highlights include:
- Mitchell Street
- Darwin’s Chinese Temple and Museum
- The Waterfront
- The Esplanade
- Mindil Beach
You’ll learn all about the history on the way. Click here to learn more about walking tours of Darwin If you’re wanting a cheaper tour, you could take an audio guided tour which takes you through the city. You can go at your own pace, learning all Darwin’s tales on the way. Click here to learn about the Darwin self-guided tour by audio
Darwin Harbour Sightseeing Cruise
See Darwin from a different perspective! The harbor sightseeing cruise will help you see the view of the city from the water and enjoy the live commentary detailing the city. Drinks and snacks are available to purchase on board.
Tiwi Islands
The Tiwi Islands are a really unique place to visit in Darwin. They are known for their friendly locals and Aboriginal art. The Wurrumiyanga people have called the islands home for thousands of years, and they kindly welcome tourists who are keen to learn about their culture. There’s plenty of history to engage with on the Tiwi Islands, and it’s the number one place to buy artwork near Darwin. You can catch a ferry from Cullen Bay Ferry Terminal – it takes around 2.5 hours to sail there. Click here to purchase tickets . Alternatively, it is possible to do an entire guided tour which includes the ferry. You’ll get a deeper understanding of the Tiwi Islands as your guide talks you through a walking tour of the community, the Tiwi Museum and a screen printing session with a local artist. Because the Tiwi Islands is all about cultural immersion, the guided tour option is definitely better if your budget can reach it. The guides are all local and the money goes directly into the community, which is great for us sustainable travellers ! Click here to learn more about the day tours from Darwin to the Tiwi Islands
Kakadu National Park
Kakadu is one of my favourite places in Australia . The landscape is like nothing else I’ve ever seen – think outback meets savannah – and there are waterfalls, 4WD tracks and hiking trails galore. If you don’t have your own vehicle, it’s possible to visit Kakadu as part of a tour. None of them are cheap, but honestly, I’d think about remortgaging your house to visit Kakadu. It’s something worth splurging on. If you’re short of money and time when you’re in Darwin Kakadu day tours do exist – however be aware that just the entrance of Kakadu is 3 hours away from Darwin by car so you will be spending a lot of time on the bus! This trip includes ancient Aboriginal rock art, the Kakadu wetlands, a yellow water billabong cruise and the Warradjan Cultural Centre which details the life of the Bininj people. Click here for more information, prices and to book the Kakadu day tour from Darwin A much more relaxed option is a 3-day tour. This will take you to the highlights of the national park, including the plunge pools, the Mary River Wetlands, Cahill’s Crossing for a spot of crocodile watching and you’ll learn all about the local Aboriginal Dreaming stories. Click here for more information on the 3 day Kakadu tour from Darwin Your guide will tell you this, but make sure you are crocwise and don’t go swimming where it’s not safe. Croc danger is real.
Arnhem Land
Kakadu can be twinned with a visit to Arnhem Land. This part of the Northern Territory that you cannot visit independently – you need a permit or a tour. You’ll be able to see some really untouched landscapes and learn all about the Aboriginal history from a Bininj Guluyambi guide. A 3 day tour will show you the highlights, including the billabongs and watering holes of Kakadu and the indigenous Mawurndaddja Rock Art in Arnhem Land. You’ll learn all about the significance of this land to the Binninj people through your friendly and knowledgeable tour guides, and see the stunning landscape in an off-road adventure that few travellers to Australia, and even the Top End, get to see. Click here for more information about the 3 day Arnhem Land tour from Darwin If you have 5 days, another tour will take you to Kakadu, Arnhem Land and Cobourg. You’ll see the highlights of Kakadu and then head to Arnhem Land and the Gunbalanya Aboriginal Community. Here you’ll get to see the Injalak Arts and Crafts Centre and enjoy some remote Aboriginal rock art. Cobourg is on the coast and you’ll be taken there in a 4WD. It’s a really off the beaten path place to visit, and you’ll camp out there. The tour also includes the RAMSAR wetlands and the beautiful northern beaches. Litchfield National Park
Litchfield isn’t quite as mesmerising as Kakadu, but it’s still a great spot to visit and to cool off from the Northern Territory’s immense heat. The national park is one of the most popular day tours from Darwin, which will take you to all of the highlights – including Wangi Falls, Florence Falls and the spectacular Termite Mounds. The tour prices start at just $99, making it one of the best budget-friendly tours in Darwin. Click here for more information about the day trip to Litchfield Park from Darwin You can also twin visiting Litchfield with Kakadu in a 3 day/ 2 night tour. Two days are spent exploring Kakadu’s highlights (including Jim Jim falls which must be accessed by 4WD) and then you’ll be off to Litchfield to explore the park there. Nitmiluk National Park
Located near the country town of Katherine, Nitmiluk National Park shouldn’t be overlooked while you’re in the top end. Also known as Katherine Gorge, tours here will show you the beauty of the gorge-land and detail some of the history. When you’re searching for Darwin day tours Katherine Gorge is a less frequented, but still stunning and very unique spot. The tours include a cruise through the gorge on which lunch is served, enabling you to see it from a unique perspective. Some stop at Edith Falls, a stunning part of the National Park, and others include a hike through Katherine Gorge itself. Scenic flight over the Mary River
This is an unmissable bucket-list experience; a flight over the fascinating Mary River Wetlands. The wetlands have the highest concentration of saltwater crocodiles in the Southern Hemisphere – so you’ll be glad you’re in an enclosed space! You also might be able to spot wallabies, jabirus, sea eagles, buffaloes and jacanas. Proper Aussie animals! The tour includes 45 minutes on an airboat, a 90 minute safari cruise and scenic helicopter flights. It’s one of those adventures that you’ll never stop telling people about once you’re back at home! The best tours in Darwin
These Darwin tours will really help you get to grips with this fascinating tropical city. They’ll help you see why Darwin is so unique and renowned, and you’ll experience a side of Australia that many people miss. So what are you waiting for? Grab your mozzie spray, find your sense of adventure (sorry, that was really corny), and work out how you’re heading to the top end – my recommendation would be a road trip from Broome or Adelaide! I’ll C U in the NT! (If you’re wondering how on earth a British person managed to make that up, I didn’t. It’s actually the Northern Territory tourism campaign . Oh Aussie humour…) I hope you’ve enjoyed this post about the best Darwin tours! Please share it or follow me on Facebook for more.

The Best Tours in Darwin & the Northern Territory
One of the largest, wildest and most uncompromisingly beautiful remote regions in the world, the Northern Territory has a unique curiosity and charm that’s difficult to match. But with such long roads and unapologetic terrain, capturing the full experience of Australia’s Top End can be difficult, especially if you’re only visiting for a short period of time. If you’re looking for some of the best tours that Darwin and its surrounds have to offer, then read on. From breathtaking airboat tours, fishing with crocodiles, to full-blown safari experiences, the Outback Wrangler has some truly amazing adventures to share with you.
Airboat tours from Darwin Harbour
If you’re looking to feel the exhilarating rush of an airboat adventure without spending hours in transit to get to your location, try booking a tour with Wild Territory’s Darwin Adventure Boats . Designed to give you the experience of a lifetime, our adventure boats are the only airboat tour in the city with access to Darwin Harbour and its stunning marine environments. So, if you’re in town, all you’ll need to do is book your tour and walk down to the harbour. Just remember to bring a bottle of water, a camera, a hat, and maybe a change of clothes… experiences like these can get muddy!
Day and Night Safari Tours out of Darwin
For a taste of some of the best activities that the Top End has to offer, come and check out our all-inclusive Top End Safari Camp Tours. Available as a day tour or as an overnight glamping experience , the Top End Safari Camp is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the rugged scenery of Darwin’s surrounds.
Disembarking from Darwin City, the tour starts with sights of the NTs floodplains from a scenic helicopter, followed by close sightings of crocodiles, birds and even wild buffalo while whipping around in an airboat. Unwind on a billabong cruise while enjoying a fresh BBQ brunch, while taking in the beauty of the Litchfield region. The day tour then concludes with some up close and personal action, meeting and greeting monster crocodiles, caught by the ‘Outback Wrangler’ himself. If you’re sticking around for the night, you’ll be moving on to a private location off the Finnis River for a bespoke outback glamping experience, featuring a BBQ dinner by the fireside as you gaze at the amazing Northern Territory night sky.
Tours of Tiwi Island – Darwin’s Best Kept Secret
Imagine a remote, natural paradise, where you’re completely off grid, and you’d be imagining the secluded marine sanctuary that is the Tiwi Island Retreat . One of Australia’s premier barefoot destinations, the Tiwi Island Retreat is in a hidden spot on the edge of Bathurst Island, offering spectacular beach front views and the perfect base to take part in the Retreat’s package offerings which include world-class fishing adventures, Indigenous culture tours and breathtakingly unique wildlife encounters.

6 Unforgettable Day Trips from Darwin
After spending a couple of days exploring Darwin city, we suggest you set aside some time and choose one of these best day trips from Darwin to experience more of the top-end magic.
Darwin isn’t exactly on the radar of most travellers. Yet, people who want to experience the best that Australia has to offer usually end up there. That’s because Darwin is the gateway to the Northern Territory and all the stark, ancient landscapes that the state offers.
So rent a car or check out one of the recommended tours below and see more on your visit.
Kakadu National Park
Nitmiluk national park, fishing tours, tiwi islands, wildlife tours.
This page may contain affiliate links. Read our full disclosure policy for more information.
Kakadu has to be on any list of the best day trips from Darwin. It’s the largest national park in Australia and stretches over nearly 20,000 square kilometres (7,722 square miles) of land. The stark, harsh landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with waterfalls, rainforest, birds and wildlife both shy and deadly, and some of the best Aboriginal rock art in the country.
What to see in Kakadu
Located around 1hour and 40 minutes drive from the city, a trip to Kakadu makes for one of the best day tours from Darwin. Here’s what to see and do while you’re there:
- Visit Nadab Lookout at sunset for the most stunning views possible.
- Follow the Nourlangie Rock Art Walk to experience the history and culture.
- Hike the rocky trail to Jim Jim Falls.
- Go for a swim in the pristine Maguk Gorge.
- Join a day tour from Darwin to pack as much into the experience as possible.
Recommended Kakadu Day Tours
Kakadu, nourlangie and yellow waters tour.
This one day tour from Darwin is exhausting, but if you have limited time, it’s your best option for seeing this amazing UNESCO site. The tour includes visiting Nourlangie Rock, a cruise on the Yellow River to meet the local crocs. After lunch, visit Warradjan Aboriginal Centre and learn the history of the area.
If you can stay longer, do one of these multi-day tours. We did the 3-day tour, and it was brilliant.
Located about 90 minutes from Darwin, Litchfield National Park is one of Darwin’s more manageable day trips. It’s a smaller park with a loop road that passes by all the best attractions and has many places to stop and take in the scenery. You’ll still get the fantastic landscape, varied wildlife, and great outdoor activities in this park. It’s just on a smaller, more manageable scale.
What to see in Litchfield
When you visit Litchfield National Park on one of your Darwin day trips, here’s what to see and do:
- Stop off to admire the Florence and Wangi Falls and their crystal-clear pools.
- Visit the sandstone pillars and termite mounds of the Lost City.
- Go for a swim at Buley Rockhole.
- Test yourself on the Walker Creek Walk, which is part of the 39km Tabletop Track.
- Stay out of the water in the wet season unless you want to get eaten by crocs!
Recommended Litchfield Day Tours
There are dozens of operators who sell tours to Litchfield, but we highly recommend you choose a company that offers small group sizes and are eco-certified. Two we recommend are:
Litchfield National Park Full-Day Safari from Darwin
This tour is run by Wayoutback Safaris , who have offered tours in the Northern Territory since 1999. I first travelled with them back in 2002 and had a brilliant time. Since then, everyone who we have recommended to them has felt the same way. We are due to go again later this year.
This 11.5 hour day tour takes a maximum of 27 travellers and includes a BBQ lunch and hiking and swimming. Visit Florence Falls, Wangi Falls and Buley Rockhole. You will also see the impressive termite mounds that the area is famous for.
Darwin: Premium Litchfield Regional Small Group Day Tour
If you prefer a smaller group, then this premium tour from ethical NT . You visit the same places as the tour above but with the addition of Berry Springs and Batchelor. Each trip includes a maximum of 11 guests and an average of only eight. The included lunch is BBQ barramundi, and there are plenty of healthy treats along the way.
Local tip: If you want to stay overnight in the area, consider Litchfield Safari Camp .
Other Litchfield options
Nitmiluk National Park is around three hours drive from the city, making it one of Darwin’s more isolated day trips. If you’re heading out to this area, you might want to stay the night. The park will reward you for that because there’s so much to do there that a single day could never be enough.
What to see in Nitmiluk National park and Katherine
When this park is one of your Darwin day tours, here’s what to do there:
- Marvel at the beauty of the Nitmiluk Gorge as well as the Aboriginal artwork that decorates its walls.
- Take a sunset or sunrise cruise to see the gorge in its best light.
- Cruise or canoe in Katherine Gorge with its fantastic sandstone walls and rock art.
- Go swimming at Edith Falls, one of the few crocodile free places in the Northern Territory.
- Go camping in the idyllic grasslands around Edith Falls.
- Walk the Jatbula Trail or the 2.6km Leliyn Trail.
Tours to Nitmiluk and Katherine
Many of the tours from Darwin to Nitmiluk are multi-day offerings and include Kakadu over 3-5 days. For a one day option , you are looking at a 14 hour day. You will visit the gorges of the Nitmiluk National Park and take a 2-hour cruise, have a chance to swim in the waterhole at Edith Falls and even make a brief stop at the town of Katherine.
If the idea of 14 hours is a bit much or you prefer to travel in style, and you have a budget to match, a tour includes a scenic flight from Darwin, a chopper ride over the 13 gorges a 2-hour cruise. This tour with Kookaburra air runs for 8 hours.
Fishing in Darwin is almost an extreme sport. Any time you’re near the water, you have to be aware of the danger of crocodiles. And that’s half the fun, isn’t it? If you enjoy fishing and want to include it in your day trips from Darwin, then you’ll have a lot of choices. You can fish for freshwater fish like Barramundi or Saratoga or take a tour offshore and try saltwater fish like Coral Trout, Jewfish, and Golden Snapper.
What’s certain is that you’ll have a great time when you include this in your day tours from Darwin. And you might be able to have a great meal afterwards too.

- Go fishing off the islands.
- Take a tour and watch the locals create their traditional arts and crafts.
The islands are a 40 minute flight or 2-hour ferry ride from Darwin, and tours that travel via ferry are about half the cost of those that include flights. Must know : You can only visit the Tiwi Islands as part of a tour or by the invitation of a local who must sponsor your permit.
Tours to the Tiwi Islands

This full-day tour includes 4.5 hours on the island plus travel time via ferry. After a welcome ceremony, you will tour the island with a local guide, visit the Tiwi Museum and historic mission precinct. After lunch, join a cultural art session and, with some help, create a souvenir to take home.
You can’t leave Darwin without seeing some of its most iconic animals . Getting up close and personal with koalas, possums, dingoes, wallabies, kangaroos, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species is one of the best things about day trips from Darwin.
