Experience the Walleye Fishing Trip of a Lifetime

Walleye use their excellent vision in dim light to prey on minnows. With its dense forage base and complex structure, Eagle Lake provides all the habitat and food walleye need to grow fast and big, with several 14 pounders landed recently. This is the place to seek a trophy walleye!

Walleye are even more sensitive to changes in temperature than most fish, so catching them is a matter of knowing what depth they find comfortable at any point in the season. This is where the famous guides at Andy Myers Lodge are so important to the success of your walleye fishing trip to Canada. These experienced pros freely share tips about which weedbeds or mid-lake humps are holding schools of walleye and will mark your maps for you. This can easily mean the difference between frustration and hundred fish days. If you choose to be guided, they will find the fish, manage the boat, and cook a memorable shore lunch from your catch.

Walleye Fishing Season

Walleye spawn around the season opener on the third Saturday in May, so look for them in warming bays with emerging grass, shallow rocks, and downed timber. Be aware that the biggest fish may leave the spawning grounds immediately after mating, heading for deeper water with baitfish where they can replenish their bodies after the winter and the spawn.

With the warming temperatures of summer, walleye movements are fairly predictable. Some remain in the shade of weeds while others find comfortable temperatures and food along deeper main-lake reefs, humps, and points. The pros at Andy Myers Lodge will tell you which types of structures and which depths the fish are using. Although many types of baits will catch them, a simple live bait rig is usually your best bet, and the lodge has the finest bait suppliers in the region. Armed with a carefully marked map and a bucketful of big dace, you are well on the way to a dream day of walleye fishing. Check out our Muskie and Walleye Special Week with guide, tournament champion, and TV personality Rob Manthei on hand to share his secrets.

As fall approaches and the thermocline drops, some walleye move deeper toward the mud line and hard bottom areas. The first class depth finders on the camp boats at Andy Myers Lodge will help you stay over the right kind of structure. Walleye also follow migrating schools of baitfish into far-flung current areas and channels. This is a beautiful time of year to experience the remote wilderness areas of the lake. Welcome to Walleye Heaven

What is the average size walleye in ontario, when do ontario walleyes spawn and where.

In the lake the Walleyes start to spawn as soon as the ice along the shore starts to melt. Generally they like to spawn on a sandy bottom like a beach but the prime spot is off sandy points where eggs do not get washed up on shore like they would on a beach. By the time Walleye season opens in Ontario the Walleyes have been finished spawning for a couple of weeks. The reason the season stays closed for so ling is because the males will hang around the spawning beds for a week and sometimes two weeks after spawning. Since Walleyes spawn in schools if someone was to find one of these schools; catching fish would be just too easy and create the temptation of keeping more of their limit.

What are the fishing regulations & catch limits in Ontario?

#1) Four fish with an Ontario sports fishing license and only one can be over 18.1 inches.

#2) Four fish with an Ontario sport fishing license and you can only keep Walleyes between 15.75 and 19.75 inches (40 to 50 mm). Anything smaller or larger needs to be let go.

I think right now the regulations are an experiment. I guide on Crotch Lake, which is about 80 miles north of Kingston. They have regulation #2 on that lake and in the last 5 years I have seen the Walleye fishing get better and better. Not only am I seeing more Walleye my guests and I am are catching bigger Walleye. A link to my guiding page is on the Sharbot Lake page from the menu above.

What kind of accommodations are available in the far north of Ontario?

Lodges: Most lodges in Ontario offer multiple levels of accommodations, which is usually a main lodge with lakeside cabins or cottages. American Plan means the lodge prepares your meals. Housekeeping Plan means the cabin has a kitchen and you make your own meals. In Ontario modified American Plan, also known as European Plan, means you get a housekeeping cabin with a kitchen but the lodge make you dinner. Google defines European Plan as being the same as housekeeping but that is not correct when describing Ontario's lodges.

Outpost Camps: If you really want to experience the northern wilderness and don't mind roughing it a bit an outpost camp is a great choice. Outpost camps are usually fly-in but many outfitters also have remote boat-to outpost camps. Outpost camps are almost always housekeeping.

Walleye Fishing in Ontario's Lakes

In my website I have written fishing tips based on fishing different lakes across Ontario. I would like you to read them and consider some different options and tactics that you have not tried before. One technique that is great for one lake may not work in another. The depth of the lake, water clarity, water temperature, oxygen levels, the type of weeds, the structure, other species of fish in the lake and the lake's distance north all affect how they feed and behave. Ontario is a big place with many different regions and habitats. First, it is best to ask the lodge owner what works. Also keep in mind that lodge owners are way too busy to go fishing most of the times so if you are not satisfied with the fishing try different things. You should also try the techniques you are used to because they may prove to be better than what other people are doing on that lake. I want you to come to Ontario and have the best Walleye fishing trip of your life. My email is below if you have questions.

Gary's Quick Walleye Lures & Baits List

• Jigs with salted or unscented twistertails (white usually works best) • An assortment of Rapalas, Thundersticks, Cotton Cordell Big O's or similar style of lures • Spinners and worm harnesses • Live worms and/or salt-cured minnows • Spinner jigs, Lindy Rigs, deep diving Husky Jerks and Erie Dearie style lures for the deeper Walleye

Double your Walleye Catch by Washing your Worms & Fishing Deeper:

Wash your Worms: I live out in the wilderness near Sharbot Lake in Northeastern Ontario. The company that used to distribute worms to all the stores in my area gave its territory to a company in Quebec. Now all the worms we are buying in local stores are packed in dry dirt and half dead. First I tried washing all the dirt off the worms and putting them in a container with damp moss. The worms came back to life and became plump and juicy but no fish would not touch them; not even Perch. I assumed the species of moss I have on my land has a smell the fish don't like. So I turned to what my dad used to do. You wash your worms in spring water, lake water or well water. You can't use city water because it's chlorinated. After washing the worms you put them in a container full of shredded damp newspaper. You need to get the paper wet and then squeeze the excess water out and then shred and crumple into loose balls. This way the worms can move around, stay damp but not drown.

Next you put the worms in the fridge for a few days before you go fishing. I guess it takes a few days to get any bad scent off the worms. After doing this I double or even triple the amount of Walleyes I catch. I did an experiment. Down the lane lives Vernon Scott. We went Walleye fishing on Crotch Lake. Vernon used worms from the store and I used my clean newspaper worms. I caught the first eight Walleyes. Vernon did not get a bite. Vernon got fed up and put one of my clean worms on and about three minutes later caught a nice 24-incher.

Fishing Deeper: I have full-page Walleye fishing tips for deep water with details about various rigs. On a quick note I would like to share something. I get a lot of business guiding in the heat of the summer because people have a hard time catching Walleyes this time of year. In July and August troll very slowly with a 3/8 oz. spinner-jig and a big fat worm. The spinner should be silver or brass and you need to troll 18 to 25 feet deep. Follow the contour of the shore staying in that depth range. Fishing deeper is your winning ticket. Please check out my deep water Walleye tactics from the menu above.

On big lakes many of the walleyes will be suspended out in open water feeding on schools of Lake Herring and Fall Fish (Giant Lake Chub). On the depth finding I find the Walleyes are usually down around 30 feet when actively feeding. You can troll with deep diving Husky Jerks and Cotton Cordell Big O's and Cotton Cordell Wally Divers. In the summer I find white and perch color are the best. You can also use a 3-way swivel rig with a 1 oz. weight and a spinner / worm harness and a big fat worm.

Ontario has thousands of the best lakes and Walleye fishing is more popular and in more demand than all other sportsfish put together. Because of their poplarity in the USA American fisherpersons bring 2 $billion into the northern economy every year and we dearly thank you for that. You could say mining, forestry and Walleye drive the northern economy.

Walleye Biology & Research Information:

The scientific name for Walleye is Sander Vitreus. Most people in Ontario used to call them Pickerel but back in the 60s somebody started calling them Walleye down south and that name slowly made it's way north into Canada and by the mid-90s most people in Ontario accepted the new name. A few of us old timers still slip once in a while and call them Pickerel.

Biomagnification & Eating Walleye:

Biomagnification is when toxins get absorbed out of the environment by microorganisms and as you move up the food chain the toxins become more concentrated with game fish being at the top and having the highest concentrations of toxins. You can drink glass after glass of water right out of Lake Ontario for 100 years and not consume as much toxins as eating one pound of game fish out of Lake Ontario. I bet you would not even think about drinking one glass of water out of Lake Ontario. Many people still have the attitude that what they can't see can't hurt them. The Ontario Guide to Eating Fish is only accurate when describing lakes and rivers that are not close to government owned casinos or resorts. For example: If you fish the Niagara River you can actually see chemicals boiling up from under rocks forming oily slicks on the surface of the water yet the government lists the Niagara River as one of the top 5 fishing destinations. They also fail to tell people that the Niagara River is an extremely dangerous river to fish.

Here is the Truth About Eating Walleye:

Walleyes that come from Lake St. Clair, Detroit River, Lake Erie, Niagara River, Lake Ontario, (including Hay Bay and the Bay of Quinte) and the St. Lawrence River have dangerous levels of Dioxin, PCBs, Lead and Mercury. Many of these chemical-filled Walleyes can be caught while migrating up the Ottawa River and into tributaries like the Petawawa River. If you don't want cancer don't eat any fish out of the above waters. Choose a smaller inland lake farther north where the Walleyes are perfect and clean.

Ontario has thousands of the best lakes and Walleye fishing is more popular and in more demand than all other sportsfish put together. Because of their poplarity in the USA American fisherpersons bring 2 $billion into the northern economy every year and we dearly thank you for that.

Walleye Fishing in Ontario

Sioux Lookout Fly In Fishing

DESCRIPTION : This species averages from 15 inches to 27 inches in length, and many in the 27 inch to 30+ inch range. Walleye’s have a dark green back and a gold to white coloured belly. On their back is a dorsal fin which has 12 to 16 spines which are very sharp, almost needle like. Some of their key characteristics are its large silvery eye, a black blotch at the base of its dorsal fin, and a white blotch at the tip of its tail.

Spring and fall are great times to try artificial hard baits such as the Shad Rap, Wally Diver, Rattlin Rap, Live Target, etc… Soft plastics work year round and we have good success with Berkley Power Grubs, Gulp, and Ribbon Tails.

As the Walleye move into deeper water you cannot go wrong with jigs tipped with a minnow. It is best to have a variety of size and colour of jig.

If the bite is soft, try resting your jig near/on the bottom with a very gentle twitch every once in a while ~ this slow action will convince even the finickiest fish.

DISTRIBUTION:  These fish are found in great numbers on Lac Seul and Map B Lakes. As spring spawners they can be found in relatively shallow waters during the months of May and June. They migrate to the deeper water as the season progresses where they settle into their summer holes for some of the most consistent fishing we see. As the summer starts to turn to fall, these large schools of fish start to move back to their spawning areas where they find an abundance of bait fish. You can expect to find these fish in depths of water ranging from 6 feet to 35 feet.

ANGLING METHOD:  The most common method used to catch these fish is to jig for them using various size lead head jigs tipped with a minnow. The most important key to jigging for Walleyes is to be able to feel the lake bottom. Other techniques used in this area include casting or trolling crankbaits (this is best suited for spring and fall fishing when they are shallow), and trolling weighted spinners, also tipped with a minnow.

TROPHY WALLEYE FISHING:  Lac Seul is the top producing trophy Walleye lake in our area and is rated as one of the top three Walleye fisheries in Ontario, but we also fish Minnitaki Lake for trophy walleye. We also walleye fish on Abram and Pelican Lakes, and while trophy walleyes are possible, these lakes tend not to be as productive as Lac Seul and Minnitaki Lakes, because of the superb structure and spawning areas they have. Also, our  Lac Seul Fly-in Outposts , on the northeast end of Lac Seul, are in the heart of some of the best trophy Walleye fishing Lac Seul has to offer!

Lost Lake Wilderness Lodge has combined the best of two worlds. For over thirty years, one lake has been an honorary Catch and Release lake while the other 7 were based on conservation fishing. We have recently moved in the direction of enforcing catch and release on all the lakes, which translates into very large Northern Pike, Walleye, Bass or Trout for picture taking.  We promote as much catch and release as possible, but we also like to see our guests keep a couple for the frying pan while here.  We ask that no fish leave camp.  With our policies and diverse choice of waterways it ensures satisfaction for everyone.

Boats & Motors

Our 14′ boats on Lost Lake come complete with 9.9 HP outboards. One is supplied for every 2 full fare Guests. All gas, life jackets, anchor, paddle, minnow bucket, landing net, live minnows or worms and bailing bucket are supplied. All boats have padded swivel seats and a mandatory boater’s safety kit is also included. You will notice from year to year, we will replace older boats with new ones, in an attempt to keep our fleet up to good standards for our Guests to enjoy and appreciate.

The remote lakes are equipped with new 8 HP Yamaha 4 stroke motors and boats that are 14′  long. All remote lake boats also feature padded swivel seats to ensure your comfort.

We offer a daily shuttle service to other drive-to lakes by either our 6 seater Polaris Ranger UTV or by truck for Guest convenience and comfort.

New boating regulations do not allow children under 17 years old to operate power boats. Regulations require a safety kit in each boat. These are supplied for your use.  We also provide a short (10 minute) mandatory boaters orientation given dockside prior to be assigned your boat.

Catch Walleye, Northern Pike, Bass, Whitefish, Perch, Speckled Trout and more!

Loch Island Lodge and Camp Lochalsh, located on the shores of Wabatongushi Lake in Ontario Canada, offer some of the best Walleye and Northern Pike fishing to be found.

The lake is 22 miles long and over 10,000 acres, with an average depth of 22 feet. The basin in front of Loch Island, which is 3 miles long by 1 mile wide, is all over 100′ deep — with the deepest hole coming in at just over 175′. This area is surrounded by points and sunken islands, making it the perfect habitat for Walleye . Northern Pike are plentiful in the long, weedy, shallow bays that line the shore. Whitefish , Jumbo Perch , and Burbot also inhabit this large body of water. For more info and a detailed map of Wabatongushi Lake, visit our lake page . Also available for download is a topographical  2-page depth map of the lake  ( opens in new window) .

Loch Island Lodge Great Fishing in the Wilderness

In addition to Wabatongushi Lake, we offer over 10 different portage lakes and streams for additional Walleye , Northern Pike , Whitefish , Perch , Speckled Trout / Brook Trout , and Smallmouth Bass fishing. These lakes and streams are all easily accessible via portage, and all have either aluminum boats with motors or canoes to fish from.

Trophy Walleye – Great Ontario Fishing

Loch Island Lodge Trophy Walleye Ontario

The Walleye here average 1.5-2 pounds, which is the the best eating size there is. However, it’s not uncommon for our guests to catch the big ones.

Our clean, northern Ontario water not only adds to the flavor but also eases the mind with its absence of harmful contaminants. Fish fillets from Wabatongushi Lake are as clean and fresh as they can be!

There are many different techniques for Walleye fishing . In our area, it really depends on the time of year you are fishing.

The most common question we get is what is the best time to come up fishing? Well, that depends! If you like shallow water fishing, then May and June are the times for you. That time of year, we use a lot of jigs with live bait, mostly minnows and leeches. Chartreuse or Orange color in the 1/4 oz. range works well. During May and June, casting or “twitching” with Rapalas is also productive. Most of the fishing that time of year is done in 5-10 feet of water. Walleye are numerous and easy to catch. It is a very popular time with fishermen of all levels.

Later in July, August and September, the Walleye migrate into deeper water. This migration begins sometime in late June or early July. During this time, the fish are leaving the shallow bays and heading for cooler, deeper water in the main lake. Sunken Islands, points and deep water drop offs are great spots that hold schools of Walleye this time of year. Our larger Walleye are usually caught during this period. Jigging with live bait is still a good way to catch fish, but you will have to use a heavier jig to get down deep, 15-40 feet. Crawler harnesses and bottom bouncers tipped with night crawlers work very well for deep water Walleye. Many people will also troll with weighted Hot-N-Tots or deep running Rapalas. Gold color always seems to work well.

Trophy Northern Pike Fishing

Loch Island Lodge Trophy Northern Pike

For Northern Pike , the season is pretty consistent. These monsters have been referred to as assimilation machines. They will devour anything that crosses their path — when they feel like eating. At other times, they just lay in the shallow water and “sun” themselves. They are at the top of the fish food chain in our waters, and anything else near them is fair game for a meal. They average 4-5 lbs. and can go up to over twenty pounds. Their long, powerful body is a naturally designed aquatic missile perfectly adapted for quick attacks on their prey. We have cut open Pike in the past and found whole Chipmunks inside!

Pike are plentiful in Wabatongushi Lake and are also present in a number of our portage lakes. Crankbaits, big spinners with or without bucktails, or large “Suicks” work well. Another easy way to catch Pike is a big sucker minnow on a bobber. It’s a bit lazy, but what the heck!

In addition to Walleye and Northern Pike, we offer exceptional Whitefish fishing in June. During June, usually when the mayflies hatch, Whitefish which are normally a deepwater fish, come to the surface to feed. It is that time that they can be caught on a fly rod or light spinning rod with artificial flies or a dead mayfly from the surface of the lake. They have very delicate mouths, so you have to be very careful not to set the hook too hard! Whitefish, when properly cooked, are fantastic eating. They are also wonderful when smoked.

Speckled Trout Abound

Speckled Trout on Indian Lake

Speckled Trout are found in several portage lakes and steams. Also known as Brook Trout , they average 10-12″ in the streams and larger in the lakes. We’ve had Specks caught up to 7 lbs in some of our outpost lakes. They are extremely aggressive and pound-per-pound will outfight anything else in the area, including the Northern Pike. Well known for their delicious fillets, they are well worth spending a day or more pursuing.

(Perch Page LINK – hidden – don’t erase)

Delicious Perch

Perch are some of the best eating fish available anywhere. They are abundant in Wabatongushi, yet underfished. Their size is what limits most fishermen from pursuing them. Most Perch average in the 8-12″ range, although some get to be much larger. The small size requires more to make a meal. Generally found in shallow, weedy bays and easily caught on spreader rigs with worms, the larger ones sometimes forget their families and school with Walleye. Those fish can be much bigger. The largest we’ve had in our fish shack was a whopping 17″.

(Small Mouth Bass Page LINK – hidden – don’t erase)

Smallmouth Bass

Loch Island Lodge Smallmouth Bass

Another species of aggressive fish located in two of our portage lakes is the Smallmouth Bass . Similar to their southern cousins, the Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth tend to congregate around rocky points and will favor more flowing waters. They are an aggressive fish and can be caught with the same techniques used for Northern Pike. Spinners, Rapalas, and small spoons work well. We do have a two-fish limit on Smallmouth Bass, but you can catch and release all day!

With all the water we have in our area, it would take years to explore and fish. It would be easy to spend an entire week just fishing our portage lakes, then years to tackle Wabatongushi. All of this is yours to explore for three days, four days, a week, or more. Use of any of our portage lakes and equipment is free of charge, so get out there and explore!

Welcome to Loch Island Lodge and Camp Lochalsh!

Gary's Guiding: Crotch Lake Fishing Guide

Final 2023 walleye count: 400 walleyes in the boat. there would have been more but i had cancellations due to crappy weather. updated october 11/2023.

The 2023 final average is 12.12 walleyes per full day. In 2022 the average was 5.78 walleyes per day. Unforturetly we have had six bad days in 2023, which brought the average way down. It happens sometimes; usually because of weather, which also caused some cancellations. The walleye fishing gets better every year and I find new hotspots every year.

My name is Gary. I live a short distance from Crotch Lake. I run an Internet business specializing in designing websites for tourism businesses with a main focus on fishing lodges. It's my full-time job but I do have time to guide. I bring you to the hotspots and show you what baits and techniques are working at that time of year. Whether you are staying in local accommodations or just coming for the day we will have a lot of fun

In 2024 I am available from Saturday, May 11 (Walleye Opener) to Saturday, October 8 (day before Thanksgiving Monday)

Please Note: Land O' Lakes Lodge is permanently closed. It's now a summer camp for kids.

Bookings: Please email me at [email protected] or you can phone me at (613) 335-5383 . My return email will say it's from iMarket Canada so please check your junk mail folder if you don't hear from me. I live out in the wilderness and don't always get a phone signal so please leave a message.

Parking: Based on Tumblehome Lodge's insurance policy; if you are not a guest of the lodge you cannot park at the lodge or walk on lodge property. You will need to park at the public boat launch off of Ardoch Road where I will meet you. You can buy a park day-pass here ($9.50). Crotch Lake Access Road & Boat Launch on Google Maps . For people camping on the lake I will pick you up at your campsite.

How Long is the Day: I am very flexible as far as how long the day is. A standard full day is usually fishing until you have had enough...lol...

2024 Rates: • Full day is $195 US or $260 CND (two people) - usually 10 to 12 hours depending on the time of year and the length of the day in regards to sunlight.

• Half day is $125 US or $170 CND (two people) - usually 5 to 6 hours.

US to CAN conversion is always fluctuating. No charge for follow boats

Shore Lunch: It's $35 for two guests. For bigger groups we can work something out with the cost of buying extra food. I only make shore lunch on full day guides.

I only accept cash: I supply the gas for my boat & worms for the people in my boat. In most cases guests are using and losing my fishing tackle. I have a really good Nikon camera and will take high-quality photos (16 megapixel) of you and your fish.

My Boat: I have a 16.5' Naden Big Fish with a 15hp Mercury Motor. I have brand new seats, which I installed on June 18/2022. I can only take two adults with me and maybe a child. If you have a larger group; your friends can follow us in other boats.

Walleye Regulations: Walleyes need to be between 16" and 19.5" (40cm to 50cm) to keep. Anything smaller or bigger must be let go. This new style of regulation is working wonders as far as the Walleye population increasing. The fishing gets better every day. You can keep four with a sports license and two with a conservation license. The fine for keeping a Walleye outside of the slot is $180 if the Walleye is releasable. If the fish does not look healthy or is dead it's a $280 fine. I will not let any guest keep a Walleye outside of the slot size.

Factors Affecting the Walleye Bite: • A full moon and clear skies at night means the Walleyes feed all night long. As a result they will not start feeding again until the afternoon, sometimes late afternoon and sometimes not at all.

• All fish will be hard to catch for a couple of days after the Dragon Fly Hatch. (Usually the end of May)

• All fish will be hard to catch for a few days after the May Fly Hatch (usually a week after the first full moon in June. It usually lasts three days.)

• All fish will be hard to catch when the pine trees start pollinating (right at the first full moon in June, which is around the 10th.)

• In the spring and summer Walleyes are very hard to catch when the wind is coming from the east, north-east or south-east. When the wind comes from the west; fish bite the best. When the wind comes from the east; fish bite the least . That is especially true on Crotch Lake. BUT!!! in late summer and fall the Walleyes gravitate to the western shore so an eastern wind is good.

• On days when it's brutally hot with no clouds and no wind the Walleyes will go deep; sometimes as deep as 50 feet. You have to fish deep. BUT!!! I have had some of my very best Walleye fishing on these terrible days. In 2019 I went out with my buddy thinking we would not catch a Walleye with a gun to our heads. That day we caught over thirty Walleye and came in after running out of worms. Crotch Lake is a strange lake and has a lot of surprises; both good and bad.

• The lake is absolutely stuffed with Walleyes. The problem is there is too much food. If your depth finder has a good display you will see countless schools of minnows and some of the bait-balls are gigantic. Crotch Lake has a species of fish called a Fall Fish. It looks like a cross between a Chub and a Shinner and they get big. They spawn in the Mississippi River and lay trillions upon trillions of eggs. They are the main feeder fish. As a result using minnows for bait is not effective. Also as a result the Walleyes are never really hungry rather they take very soft curiosity bites and most times you don't even know they are on your line until you set the hook. If you lure feels a little heavy like you have a small weed on always set the hook.

• Jigging is not effective unless you know the lake very well and know the rare spots where they are concentrated at certain times of the year. The Mississippi River is a Mecca for canoeists. They are constantly lowering King's Dam to keep water levels down stream high enough for canoes. As a result the Walleyes in Crotch Lake are always on the move and are spread out all over. Trolling is the most effective way to catch them as you are covering ground.

The perfect Walleye day is a steady 10 MPH wind coming from the west, lots of cloud cover but not clouds from a low pressure system and no rain. Walleyes will go into a feeding frenzy right before a thunderstorm. When it starts raining they shut right down and will not start feeding again until after the low pressure system has been pushed out of the area.

Washrooms on Crotch Lake: Crotch Lake is within the North Frontenac Parklands and has recently been classified as a biodiversity wilderness region and is now fully protected. Hundreds of people each year canoe down the Mississippi River and stop and camp on Crotch Lake for a night or two. There are many backcountry campsites dotted along the shore of the lake. Each campsite has an "Out", which is an outhouse without the house part. Some people call them thunder boxes. Each campsite will have a trail leading to the out, which is placed in a spot for privacy. In most cases it is easy to find an empty campsite where you can go if you need to.

About Me: My father was a fishing fanatic. As a kid I grew up freezing cold standing in the middle of the Saugeen River casting for Rainbow Trout in early spring & late fall. My mom was a high school teacher and had summers off so she and I spent many summers at the cottage (Pigeon Lake near Bobcaygeon) where all I did was fish for Walleye, Musky & bass. During high school I started guiding for lodges in the far north and eventually found myself at a 5-star fly-in fishing lodge about 600 miles north-west of Thunder Bay, where I worked for many seasons. I guided along side many highly experienced Cree guides who showed me a lot of Walleye fishing tricks.

On Crotch Lake I like to focus on Walleye but I do know a ton of hot bass spots where they go crazy over Wacky Worms and Ned Rigs. Most people hire me to get the Walleyes because even though there are tons and tons of Walleyes in the lake; they can be tricky to catch because they are always on the move.

Alcohol: You cannot under any circumstances have open alcohol in the boat. The fines in Ontario for open alcohol in a boat are monstrous.

Thanks Gary

An “Eye” on Opening Day

walleye fishing trips ontario canada

All across Ontario’s Algoma Country anglers are casting an eye towards opening day. Walleye fishing season opens on the third Saturday in May, and countless residents and non-residents alike have their calendars already marked.

The opening day of the walleye fishing season is the unofficial beginning of the open-water fishing season in Ontario . While a host of other species are already open by the third Saturday in May, walleye are the species that the masses gravitate to. No surprises here, as walleye are not only popular in Algoma Country, but they are abundant and clearly the most prized on the table.

Jigs Get The Nod

Walleye are especially eager to bite early in the season when the water is cool. After a long lean winter and the rigours of spawning season, walleye hit the shallows in May looking for an easy meal. Hands down, the most productive lures for spring fishing are lead head jigs, and most anglers prefer to tip their jigs with a live minnow.

walleye fishing trips ontario canada

Just a quick reminder, non-residents are not allowed to transport live or dead minnows or leeches across the border. These regulations are in force to stop the spread of invasive species. Thankfully, a host of live bait dealers within Ontario are sure to have plenty of lively walleye minnows on hand.

Read: Minnows, Leeches or Nightcrawlers? Walleye bait for June, July and August

In May when walleye are found in shallow water, jigs in the 1/8- to 1/4-ounce sizes are usually best. The garden variety round-head jig does a good job, but stand-up style jigheads help reduce snags. These unique jigs also keep the bait positioned up off the bottom, where walleye are more likely to spot the offering.

Stand-up jigs have the added advantage of doing a great job of hooking walleye in the upper jaw. This feature helps to ensure hooked fish are landed and also makes it easy to live-release walleye unharmed. A number of trusted manufacturers produce stand-up jigs designed for walleye fishing. Some of the most popular brands include Bait Rigs Tackle, Northland Tackle and Fin-Tech Fishing Tackle.

Tips For Hooking Minnows

Using a jig and tipping with a minnow is almost a guarantee that walleye anglers across Algoma Country will be successful. Most anglers bait their jig by hooking the minnow through both lips or by placing the hook point in the minnow’s mouth and protruding out the back of the minnow’s head.

This standard way of baiting a jig works great, but unfortunately, the hook point is positioned in such a way it’s pretty easy for a walleye to slurp up the minnow and not get a hook in the mouth! A better alternative is to use a jig with a long shank hook. My personal favourite is the Bait Rigs Odd’ball Jig; place the hook point into the minnow’s mouth and then out through the gill cover. Slide the minnow up the hook shank of the jig and twist the minnow so the hook point can be run up the vent and out the back of the minnow.

walleye fishing trips ontario canada

Hooked in this fashion a walleye is going to have a very difficult time getting the minnow off the hook, without getting the point of the hook in its mouth. This method of baiting a jig works great for vertical jigging, drifting fishing, dragging jigs, and also for casting jigs to shoreline cover.

Plastics Are Almost As Good

To the hardcore walleye fisherman, minnows are king when it comes to spring fishing. It’s true that minnows are pretty tough to beat when jig fishing, but open-minded anglers are experimenting more and more with soft plastics that imitate live bait and do a better job of staying on the hook, especially in casting applications.

The latest generation of soft plastics not only look like live bait, but they have the advantage of being scented and also flavour enhanced. A few of the soft baits that rival the fish-catching powers of live bait include Berkley Gulp, Power Bait, Rapala Trigger X and Yum Baits. All of these manufacturers produce action tail grubs, split tail grubs and shad body grubs that do an excellent job of imitating forage minnows while smelling the part.

walleye fishing trips ontario canada

Plastic baits can also do something that live bait cannot. Plastics come in a host of fish-attracting colours. In Ontario waters, some of the best soft plastic colours for walleye jigging include chartreuse, chartreuse/glow, and chartreuse/orange. pearl, pearl/pink and fire-tiger. All of these colours show up well in the tannic acid-stained waters of most Ontario lakes and rivers.

An Extra Boost of Enticement

A jig is deadly and when tipped with a live minnow it’s almost more than any self-respecting walleye can resist. Anglers who fish jigs with soft plastics often go an extra step and slather their baits with after-market fish scents designed to create a defined scent trail and also to entice bites.

Pro-Cure is the industry’s leading producer of fishing scents made from natural forage species like emerald shiners, crayfish, alewives, herring, smelt and gizzard shad. These natural forages are ground up and then mixed with a stabilizing agent that keeps these scents from spoiling. Pro-Cure has a five-year shelf life. Adding these scents to jigs tipped with plastic establishes a natural and pungent scent stream in the water that makes it easier for walleye to zero in on jigs tipped with plastics. The Trophy Walleye Super Gel is one of the more popular scents in the Pro-Cure line. This sticky paste adheres nicely and stays on soft and hard baits.

Read: Making Sense of Fishing Scents

On average, anglers should re-apply fishing scents about every 30 minutes while fishing. When using scent products, it also helps to clean lures before adding scent. A quick bath in Joy dishwashing liquid does a great job of removing foreign odours like insect repellent, sunscreen or tobacco smells that can spook fish.

For more information on how to use fishing scents, visit the www.pro-cure.com web page for insights.

Summing It Up

The opening day of walleye season in Ontario’s Algoma Country is the third Saturday in May. Avid anglers everywhere will be heading north for this special event. It’s a safe bet most of these fishermen will be fishing jigs and it’s also a given that bait buckets everywhere will be overflowing with minnows.

The jig and the minnow is the traditional way to catch spring walleye. Jigs dressed with soft plastic bodies and doused with scent products are a close second when it comes to fooling these tasty and sought-after fish. The smart move is to show up at the party with both and let the walleye decide which trips their trigger.

The Ontario government is safeguarding fish populations by ensuring anglers follow fishing regulations.

Three men were fined a total of $7,605 for spearing walleye, obstructing a fisheries officer, abandoning fish, possessing walleye out of season and possessing a spear at night within 30 metres of the water’s edge. Two of the men were also suspended from fishing and had equipment forfeited to the Crown.

Patrick Moroso of Sudbury pleaded guilty to possessing fish caught in contravention of Ontario Fishery Regulations under the Fisheries Act, abandoning fish suitable for food, fishing by means other than angling and possessing a spear for fishing. He was fined a total of $2,469, suspended from fishing for a total of two years and the fish and spear were forfeited to the Crown.

Aiden Joly of Val Caron pleaded guilty to possessing fish caught in contravention of Ontario Fishery Regulations under the Fisheries Act, obstructing a fisheries officer, fishing by means other than angling and possessing a spear for fishing. He was fined a total of $2,469, suspended from fishing for two years and the fish and spear were forfeited to the Crown.

Jack Horsfall of Garson pleaded guilty to possessing fish caught in contravention of the Ontario Fishery Regulations under the Fisheries Act, fishing by means other than angling and unlawfully using artificial light to attract fish. He was fined a total of $2,667 and the fish were forfeited to the Crown.

The court heard that on April 29, 2023, conservation officers were conducting surveillance near the town of Azilda in response to public complaints of individuals spearing spawning walleye during the closed season. In the early hours that morning, officers observed Patrick Moroso and Aiden Joly in the water in possession of spears, spearing large walleye during the spawn. All walleye successfully speared were observed to be brought onto shore to Jack Horsfall, who was aiding in spotlighting the speared walleye. Walleye that had been injured during the spearing and managed to release themselves from the spear barbs floated down river and no attempt to recover them was made. When officers contacted the individuals, Aiden Joly obstructed the officers by throwing evidence into the river and fleeing the scene.

Justice of the Peace Lori-Ann Toulouse heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Sudbury, on September 11, 2023.
