SINGER TRAVEL CAN TAKE YOU "OUT OF THIS WORLD". SPACE TRAVEL WITH VIRGIN GALACTIC.

Here's a unique travel experience for a special birthday, occasion, or gift. Virgin Galactic's sub-orbital space trips are the most intense and wonderful experiences that passengers have ever had.

Astronauts will spend two to three days of training at or near the Virgin Galactic New Mexico Spaceport before embarking on their sub-orbital flight. SpaceShip2 will be carried by a revolutionary mothership called WhiteKnightTwo. She will climb to a height of around 50,000 feet (the cruising altitude of Concorde) and be released before firing her rockets and accelerating in a vertical climb into space! After enjoying some of the most spectacular views and sensations ever experienced by humankind, the wings of the spacecraft will feather to allow a safe re-entry at around 6 g's. After re-entry the wings will re-configure to allow a gentle glide back to the spaceport. On your return to terra firma you will be given your Virgin Galactic astronaut wings!

We are now taking reservations for travel in the near future. Interested in an out-of-this-world experience? Call Helene Singer at 610.378.1610.

FIFTEEN WAYS TO SPEED THROUGH SECURITY CHECKPOINTS.

DON'T tell a screener that you are about to miss your flight (it won't win you any sympathy and could even arouse suspicion).

DON'T wear clothing with metallic objects such as buckles.

DON'T wear lots of jewelry or hairpins that can't be easily removed.

DON'T say you "forgot" you have liquids in your bag.

DON'T try to jam everything into one bin in a misguided effort to be helpful — it's much harder to screen.

DON'T accuse screeners of theft. Once you're certain an item is missing, speak to a supervisor.

DON'T tell screeners "it only comes in this size" or "it's almost empty" when asked to surrender containers of liquid larger than three ounces.

DON'T tell them how much you spent on the toiletries — it won't make any difference if they're the wrong size.

DON'T block traffic by repacking your belongings on the conveyor belt.

DO wear easily removable shoes.

DO keep your boarding pass in hand.

DO take the one-quart plastic bag holding containers of liquids and gels (each 3 oz. or less) out of your carry-on before putting it through the x-ray machine.

DO lay your bag on its side (the up-right position is much harder to "read" and may trigger a rescreening).

DO put items through the x-ray machine only when you are ready to walk through the metal detector. This minimizes the time you're separated from your belongings.

DO make sure that you have all items before you leave the checkpoints.

For US flights and procedures travelers should check the TSA website at www.tsa.gov .

"The trip was absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for arranging everything for us. We could not have asked for a better visit to South Africa. The hotels for the safari and in Franschhoek were especially amazing. The safari was an experience I'll remember for the rest of my life, it was phenomenal!" –Emily R.

"Just have to tell you that our trip to South Africa was amazing. Thanks to Singer Travel, everything was perfect including the nice gift we received on arrival and the very nice welcome home gift. The T's were all crossed and the I's all dotted. Happiness is a trip planned by Singer Travel. The only way to go." –Barbara G.

"We returned last night from England — your assistance to us was flawless in every way and Bob and I are most impressed and appreciative. Thank you both for everything. Can hardly wait for another trip so that we can again benefit from your services!" –Gene P.

"Thank you very much for all you've done... i.e., seat assignments, limos, etc. You just sail through all these rather confusing reservations with ease. Enjoy your very well deserved vacation days and thanks again for all your help. We'll be talking next week for sure (more reservations)." –Susana M.

"Thank you very much for your help with making the arrangements and for taking care of the issue with the bill. Efforts like that make working with you and Singer Travel a pleasure, and keep us coming back to you. We are already thinking of our next vacation — possibly a posh photo safari to Africa. We'll be in touch as our thoughts get more set." –Richard D. CLICK HERE TO VIEW IMAGE

"We had a wonderful trip to Alaska! The weather was spectacular for the entire trip, and we got to join the 30% Club, those chosen few who get to view The Big One — Denali (Mt. McKinley). We got great views and pictures on numerous days. The only day it rained was the day we went white water rafting and we were going to be wet anyway J. We were able to see and photograph a lot of wildlife... bears, moose, caribou, dall sheep, and a fox catching a squirrel! We did not get to see a wolf, but we understand that is hard to do. All in all, we consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have experienced Alaska during such phenomenal weather. Thank you for your assistance with the arrangements." –Donna R.

"Scheduling nine guys from four different airports to the same location I'm sure was not an easy task. The best part of the whole deal was she got us in on those 'great' rates. We received our tickets today — everything was letter perfect!"

"Thanks again for helping us plan and book our trip to France. We had an amazing time." –Terese G. CLICK HERE TO VIEW IMAGE

I cannot recommend Click And Fly highly enough. We have now had two holidays in South Africa and Mike has made all the arrangements for us. Both times he has given us advice to iterate to an itinerary which suits us and then he has made all of the arrangements. All of the hotels have been fantastic – and somehow Mike has managed to get us some of the best rooms within the hotels. We will return – no doubt will the help and advice of Click And Fly.

Four arrested after Spanish blogger on India motorcycle tour gangraped

The couple had set up a tent to pass the night in Jharkhand state’s Dumka as seven men attacked them.

Women in India protest rape

Indian authorities have arrested four people suspected of being part of a group that gangraped a Spanish tourist and assaulted her partner.

The woman – whose identity was not revealed by the authorities – is a travel blogger with more than 200,000 followers on Instagram.

She was travelling with her partner in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand when the attack happened on Friday night.

The couple had stopped their motorbikes and set up a tent to pass the night in the state’s Dumka district before a group of seven men attacked them.

All the members of the group have been identified and the remaining suspects will be arrested “soon”, Jharkhand police chief Ajay Kumar Singh told The Indian Express newspaper.

“They had beaten us and robbed us, although not many things [were taken] because what they wanted was to rape me,” the 28-year-old woman said in an Instagram post.

In another post, her male partner said he was hit several times in the head with a helmet and that his “mouth is destroyed”.

A patrol car rescued the duo late on Friday night after the assault and escorted them to a local hospital.

The couple were touring South Asia and had concluded a trip to Sri Lanka before the Indian leg of their journey.

Sexual violence targeting women is common in India, with women from minority tribal communities being particularly at risk. Taboos around speaking up about the crime and low conviction rates of suspects add to the problem.

An average of nearly 90 rapes were reported in India every day, meaning one woman was raped every 18 minutes, in 2022, according to the National Crime Records Bureau, which recorded 31,516 rape cases that year.

Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh states recorded the highest number of cases.

In Senegal's capital, Nicaragua is a hot ticket among travel agents as migrants try to reach US

In Senegal's capital, Nicaragua is a hot ticket among travel agents serving people who want to live in the United States

DAKAR, Senegal -- Gueva Ba tried to reach Europe by boat 11 times from Morocco, failing each attempt. Then, in 2023, the former welder heard about a new route to the United States by flying to Nicaragua and making the rest of the journey illegally by land to Mexico's northern border.

“In Senegal, it’s all over the streets — everyone’s talking about Nicaragua, Nicaragua, Nicaragua," said Ba, who paid about 6 million CFA francs ($10,000) to get to Nicaragua in July with stops in Morocco, Spain and El Salvador. “It’s not something hidden.”

Ba, 40, was deported from the U.S. with 131 compatriots in September after two months in detention, but thousands of other Senegalese have gained a foothold in America. Many turn to savvy travel agents who know the route — touted on social media by those who've successfully settled in the U.S.

They are part of a surge in migration to the United States that is extraordinary for its size and scope, with more people from far-flung countries accounting for crossings at the border. And as with this route used by the Senegalese, more are figuring out plans, making payments, and seeking help via social networks, and apps like WhatsApp and TikTok.

Arrests for illegal crossings on the U.S. border with Mexico reached record highs in December. January saw a drop for the month, but arrests have topped 6.4 million since January 2021. And Mexicans account for only about 1 of 4 arrests, with the others coming from more than 100 countries.

U.S. authorities arrested Senegalese migrants 20,231 times for crossing the border illegally from July to December. That's a 10-fold increase from 2,049 arrests during the same period of 2022, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Many cross in remote deserts of western Arizona, like Ba, and California.

Word of the Nicaragua route began spreading early last year in Dakar and took hold in May, said Abdoulaye Doucouré, who owns a travel agency that sold about 1,200 tickets from Dakar to Nicaragua in the last three months of 2023, for the equivalent of several thousand dollars each.

“People didn’t know about this route, but with social networks and the first migrants who took this route, the information quickly circulated among migrants,” he said.

Some are motivated by Senegal's political turmoil — authorities delayed February’s presidential elections by 10 months — but the sudden draw seemed to hinge largely on social media posts and the spread of the route there.

Spikes attributed to social media have occurred in other West African nations, whose people have historically turned first to Europe to flee. Mauritanians have arrived at the U.S. border with Mexico in similarly large numbers, and migrants from Ghana and Gambia have come, too.

Many are eventually released in the U.S. to pursue asylum in immigrant courts that are backlogged for years with more than 3 million cases.

Passports from many African countries carry little weight in the Western Hemisphere, making the journey by land to the United States difficult to even begin. Senegalese can fly visa-free to only two countries in the Americas: Nicaragua and Bolivia, according to The Henley Passport Index. Nicaragua is much closer than Bolivia and avoids the notoriously dangerous Darien Gap in Panama.

As U.S. sanctions against Nicaragua's repressive government have increased, the government of President Daniel Ortega has used migration to push back.

The Nicaraguan government went so far as to hire a Dubai-based firm to train Nicaraguan civil aviation to manage national immigration procedures for charter flight passengers. More than 500 charter flights landed from June to November, mostly from Haiti and Cuba, according to Manuel Orozco, director of the migration, remittances and development program at the Inter-American Dialogue.

But migrants from farther afield, like Ba, also made their way to Nicaragua on a series of connecting commercial flights from Africa. In African capitals, migrants typically buy multileg tickets from travel agents connecting through Istanbul or Madrid, followed by stops in Bogota, Colombia, or San Salvador, El Salvador, before ultimately arriving in Managua, Nicaragua. From there, they meet smugglers offering to take them to the Honduran border, or arrange the trip all the way to the U.S.

The U.S. State Department has called on Nicaragua to “play a responsible role” in managing hemispheric migration, but that has yet to be seen. Nicaraguan first lady and Vice President Rosario Murillo did not respond to a request for comment on the surge in extra-continental migration through her country.

In October, El Salvador began charging $1,130 for citizens of 57 largely African countries and India transiting the country’s airport. Authorities said most of those charged were on their way to Nicaragua aboard Avianca, a Colombian commercial carrier.

El Salvador’s fee caused airfares from Dakar to rise toward the end of 2023, said Serigne Faye, an agent at the Touba Express travel agency in Senegal’s capital. Some passengers instead fly through Bogota. Stopovers in Turkey are the most expensive.

While most asylum claims fail, the immigration court backlog means that people can remain in the U.S. for years, with eligibility for work permits. The asylum grant rate for Senegalese was 26% in the U.S. government’s budget year ended Sept. 30, compared with 14% for all nationalities, according to Justice Department figures.

Ousmane Anne, 34, left Senegal on Sept. 25 with a plane ticket to Nicaragua, purchased from a travel agency. His journey took a month — longer and costlier than anticipated. Mexico was treacherous, he said, describing his traveling group as frequently harassed, threatened and robbed by gangs.

Despite the enthusiasm back home, he said, he'd be hard-pressed to recommend the trip to anyone who doesn't understand the risks. But he made it to New York, which has the largest Senegalese population of any U.S. metropolitan area, according to census data.

“I knew it would not be very easy to come here to the States, but the hope that I had was higher than all the obstacles and problems,” Anne said. “I knew the opportunities would be greater here.”

He recently attended a forum in Harlem, hosted by the Senegalese Association of America. He learned basics of U.S. law, heard some do’s and don’ts from police officers about the e-bikes and mopeds that are popular with migrants, and got tips on navigating the health care system.

Even if he came away with more questions than answers, Anne said, he remains hopeful.

American Airlines raises bag fees, won't allow some travel agency bookings to earn miles

thumbnail

  • American Airlines has raised the prices of checked baggage to $40 at the airport.
  • American Airlines is also reducing fees for slightly overweight bags.
  • The carrier said Tuesday it will start limiting which tickets purchased through a third party are eligible to earn AAdvantage frequent flyer miles.

In this article

American Airlines has raised the price to check a bag for the first time in more than five years and said it would limit which travel agency bookings are eligible to earn frequent flyer miles.

Passengers will pay $35 to check a first bag for domestic flights if the service is booked online in advance, or $40 if they purchase the option at the airport, the carrier said Tuesday. Both options previously cost $30. A second checked bag will cost $45, up from $40, whether purchased in advance or at the airport.

Travelers' first checked bag on flights between the U.S. and Canada, the Caribbean or Mexico will be $35 whether in advance or at the airport.

American Airlines last raised bag fees in September 2018 along with other major airlines. Carriers are looking for ways to increase revenue as airfare has declined over the past year. The last inflation report showed airfare fell more than 6% in January from a year earlier.

"Our cost of transporting bags is significantly higher" over the past few years, said Scott Chandler, American's senior vice president of revenue management and loyalty. "Fuel is a big component of it."

Airlines and other companies have been grappling with how to cover higher costs , such as new labor contracts, while pricing power has waned.

Other airlines have also recently raised bag fees. This year, Alaska Airlines increased the charge for economy passengers to check bags by $5 to $35 for a first piece and $45 for a second bag. JetBlue Airways started charging most coach travelers $45 to check a bag within 24 hours of departure, up from $40. In advance, JetBlue is now charging $35 for the first bag.

"While we don't like increasing fees, it's one step we are taking to get our company back to profitability and cover the increased costs of transporting bags," JetBlue said in a statement. "By adjusting fees for added services that only certain customers use, we can keep base fares low and ensure customer favorites like seatback TVs and high-speed Wi-Fi remain free for everyone."

United Airlines and Delta Air Lines  declined to comment Tuesday on potential changes to their policies. Southwest Airlines offers passengers two free checked bags.

In the first nine months of 2023, U.S. airlines brought in $5.5 billion from baggage fees — including more than $1 billion by American alone. The total was up 9% from the year-earlier period, and up more than 25% from the first nine months of 2019, according to the Transportation Department's latest data.

American's frequent flyer members with elite status and some American Airlines credit card holders will still receive a complimentary checked bag, it said Tuesday in announcing the changes.

The Forth Worth, Texas-based airline is also reducing fees for slightly overweight bags, so travelers will no longer have to frantically remove items from their suitcases at the check-in counter. For example, customers will pay a fee of $30 on checked bags that are as much as three pounds over a 50 pound limit, instead of the previous $100 fee.

American also said on Tuesday that it will start limiting which tickets purchased through a third party are eligible to earn AAdvantage frequent flyer miles, a move that aims to drive traffic to American's website and the latest in a series of changes to the program . It said it will provide a list in April of preferred travel agencies whose bookings will still be eligible for the rewards credits.

Customers who buy basic economy tickets will only earn frequent flyer miles if they book on American Airlines' website.
