Report on my visit to High Tech High in San Diego

I was very impressed by Tony Wagner ’s account of High Tech High , both in his Global Achievement Gap book and in the video he showed us during his recent Purdue visit, so I decided this is a place I must visit. I took the day tour this past Monday.

I arrived there Monday morning at 9:00. This is a cluster of five buildings surrounding a large open area with playgrounds, basketball hoops, and plenty of green grass. I was looking for a gate, or a fenced place, none appeared. Instead there were several groups of kids playing outside. I went into the building that says High Tech High. It is a very large hangar with high ceilings with art everywhere. There isn’t a single square inch surface that is covered by art; there isn’t a single square inch of ceiling that does not have something dangling from it. The variety is as amazing as the quantity, from paintings, to multi-media arrangements, to musical instruments, to gear systems, to masks. The mood of the place hits you immediately as a place where there is work and joy. Students are going in and out, talking, and laughing, yet they all seem busy and fully engaged in their work. All the classrooms have glass walls or many low windows so I was able to walk around and see most classrooms. None was arranged in the traditional mode with students in rows listening to teacher. They all had the students talking to each other and working with each other.

High Tech High corridor

Student art is abundant in High Tech High’s corridors.

At 10:00 our student ambassador came to give us a tour. She is a middle school student. High Tech High is in fact a conglomerate of an elementary school, a middle school, and three high schools. They all have the same philosophy and approach, are run together but also independently. All of them use the same pedagogy and emphasize student independence; students co-design their learning with the faculty. There is a strong emphasis on exhibition of student work. In their view, it stimulates students’ intrinsic motivation, promotes self reflection and assessment, and makes room for all students to contribute in their diversity. The focus on exhibition also promotes collaboration between faculty.

It was very interesting for me to see some of the values we have been talking about all year in action:

1. During our tour, a student opened a classroom and invited us in to observe the senior calculus class which was about to start. We went in. The professor was doing the roll call. When he called a name, others responded, “She is baby sitting.” A few minutes later, a student walks in with a young child on her back. She walked to her table, dropped the child next to her, and got to work. The class proceeded naturally. This is the whole person value in action. Students are accepted with all of their lives and their baggage. Nothing is sliced out or isolated.

High Tech High learning space

High Tech High’s classrooms are very open and airy.

2. While talking to the principal, I mentioned the diversity in their student body. She explained that this is by design. Admission to this charter school is by lottery. They make sure that they are representative of all classes, ethnicities, geographic locations, etc. They take all students irrespective of preparation or scores, yet, by the end, they surpass the most selective schools in the country in their performance. 98% of their graduates go to college. What is even more remarkable, 88% of these actually complete their degree. This is close to three times the national average. Their explanation is that their graduates do not know any more material than others, and they face as many challenges as any other student. The key is that their graduates have grit; they have learned to seek help; they have learned to collaborate; they have learned to trust adults and seek their input and advice. This is really remarkable. And this is the value of access and diversity in action. This is the argument with which I find we face most resistance. It is so refreshing to see that others believed in it and put it in action.

3. I asked how they managed with so many students of all ages roaming around with no gates and no fences. She laughed and said, “Our founder teaches us how to break the rules creatively.” She continued, “With all state and local regulations, you have no idea how many rules we actually break, but our focus is laser sharp on the students and their well being and at the end of the day we end up all winning. We are constantly walking a fine line, though.”

Some other features of what they do: every student is assigned an advisor who stays with them until they graduate. They meet twice a week but in group.

High Tech High runs its own teacher accreditation program. They train their teachers while they are teaching for them. The first year (the entry point) is the hardest for students because they are not used to organizing their time. They do quite a bit of hand holding in those years, and then students pick it up from there.

They have honors and special education but they are integrated together. Students are in the same class, but work is customized.

Microsoft Makes High-Stakes Play in Tech Cold War With Emirati A.I. Deal

Microsoft said it would invest $1.5 billion in G42, an Emirati company with ties to China, as Washington and Beijing maneuver to secure tech influence in the Persian Gulf.

Peng Xiao, wearing a dark blue blazer over a black shirt, looking toward the camera in front of a screen that says OpenAI and G42.

By Paul Mozur and David E. Sanger

Paul Mozur reports on global technology and David E. Sanger reports on the White House.

Microsoft said on Tuesday that it would make a $1.5 billion investment in G42 , an artificial intelligence giant in the United Arab Emirates, in a deal largely orchestrated by the Biden administration to box out China as Washington and Beijing battle over who will exercise technological influence in the Persian Gulf region and beyond.

Under the partnership, Microsoft will give G42 permission to sell Microsoft services that use powerful A.I. chips, which are used to train and fine-tune generative A.I. models. In return, G42, which has been under scrutiny by Washington for its ties to China, will use Microsoft’s cloud services and accede to a security arrangement negotiated in detailed conversations with the U.S. government. It places a series of protections on the A.I. products shared with G42 and includes an agreement to strip Chinese gear out of G42’s operations, among other steps.

“When it comes to emerging technology, you cannot be both in China’s camp and our camp,” said Gina Raimondo, the commerce secretary, who traveled twice to the Emirates to talk about security arrangements for this and other partnerships.

The accord is highly unusual, Brad Smith, Microsoft’s president, said in an interview, reflecting the U.S. government’s extraordinary concern about protecting the intellectual property behind A.I. programs.

“The U.S. is quite naturally concerned that the most important technology is guarded by a trusted U.S. company,” said Mr. Smith, who will take a seat on G42’s board.

The investment could help the United States push back against China’s rising influence in the gulf region. If the moves succeed, G42 will be brought into the U.S. fold and pare back its ties with China. The deal could also become a model for how U.S. firms leverage their technological leadership in A.I. to lure countries away from Chinese tech, while reaping huge financial awards.

But the matter is sensitive, as U.S. officials have raised questions about G42. This year, a congressional committee wrote a letter urging the Commerce Department to look into whether G42 should be put under trade restrictions for its ties to China, which include partnerships with Chinese firms and employees who came from government-connected companies.

In an interview, Ms. Raimondo, who has been at the center of an effort to prevent China from obtaining the most advanced semiconductors and the equipment to make them, said the agreement “does not authorize the transfer of artificial intelligence, or A.I. models, or GPUs” — the processors needed to develop A.I. applications — and “assures those technologies can be safely developed, protected and deployed.”

While the Emirates and United States did not sign a separate accord, Ms. Raimondo said, “We have been extensively briefed and we are comfortable that this agreement is consistent with our values.”

In a statement, Peng Xiao, the group chief executive of G42, said that “through Microsoft’s strategic investment, we are advancing our mission to deliver cutting-edge A.I. technologies at scale.”

The United States and China have been racing to exert technological influence in the Persian Gulf, where hundreds of billions of dollars are up for grabs and major investors, including Saudi Arabia , are expected to spend billions on the technology. In the rush to diversify away from oil, many leaders in the region have set their sights on A.I. — and have been happy to play the United States and China off each other.

Although the United Arab Emirates is an important U.S. diplomatic and intelligence partner, and one of the largest buyers of American weapons, it has increasingly expanded its military and economic ties with China. A portion of its domestic surveillance system is built on Chinese technology and its telecommunications work on hardware from Huawei, a Chinese supplier. That has fed the worries of U.S. officials, who often visit the Persian Gulf nation to discuss security issues.

But U.S. officials are also concerned that the spread of powerful A.I. technology critical to national security could eventually be used by China or by Chinese government-linked engineers, if not sufficiently guarded. Last month, a U.S. cybersecurity review board sharply criticized Microsoft over a hack in which Chinese attackers gained access to data from top officials. Any major leak — for instance, by G42’s selling Microsoft A.I. solutions to companies set up in the region by China — would go against Biden administration policies that have sought to limit China’s access to the cutting-edge technology.

“This is among the most advanced technology that the U.S. possesses,” said Gregory Allen, a researcher at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and a former U.S. defense official who worked on A.I. “There should be a very strategic rationale for offshoring it anywhere.”

For Microsoft, a deal with G42 offers potential access to huge Emirati wealth. The company, whose chairman is Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed, the Emirates’ national security adviser and the younger brother of the country’s ruler, is a core part of the Emirates’ efforts to become a major A.I. player.

Despite a name whimsically drawn from “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” in which the answer to the “ultimate question of life” is 42, G42 is deeply embedded in the Emirati security state. It specializes in A.I. and recently worked to build an Arabic chatbot, called Jais.

G42 is also focused on biotechnology and surveillance. Several of its executives, including Mr. Xiao, were associated with a company called DarkMatter, an Emirati cyber-intelligence and hacking firm that employs former spies.

In its letter this year, the bipartisan House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party said Mr. Xiao was connected to an expansive network of companies that “materially support” the Chinese military’s technological advancement.

The origins of Tuesday’s accord go back to White House meetings last year, when top national security aides raised the question with tech executives of how to encourage business arrangements that would deepen U.S. ties to firms around the world, especially those China is also interested in.

Under the agreement, G42 will cease using Huawei telecom equipment, which the United States fears could provide a back door for the Chinese intelligence agencies. The accord further commits G42 to seeking permission before it shares its technologies with other governments or militaries and prohibits it from using the technology for surveillance. Microsoft will also have the power to audit G42’s use of its technology.

G42 would get use of A.I. computing power in Microsoft’s data center in the Emirates, sensitive technology that cannot be sold in the country without an export license. Access to the computing power would likely give G42 a competitive edge in the region. A second phase of the deal, which could prove even more controversial and has not yet been negotiated, could transfer some of Microsoft’s A.I. technology to G42.

American intelligence officials have raised concerns about G42’s relationship to China in a series of classified assessments, The New York Times previously reported. Biden administration officials have also pushed their Emirati counterparts to cut the company’s ties to China. Some officials believe the U.S. pressure campaign has yielded some results, but remain concerned about less overt ties between G42 and China.

One G42 executive previously worked at the Chinese A.I. surveillance company Yitu, which has extensive ties to China’s security services and runs facial-recognition-powered monitoring across the country. The company has also had ties to a Chinese genetics giant, BGI, whose subsidiaries were placed on a blacklist by the Biden administration last year. Mr. Xiao also led a firm that was involved in 2019 in starting and operating a social media app , ToTok, that U.S. intelligence agencies said was an Emirati spy tool used to harvest user data.

In recent months, G42 has agreed to walk back some of its China ties, including divesting a stake it took in TikTok’s owner, ByteDance, and pulling out Huawei technology from its operations, according to U.S. officials.

Korn Ferry Tour

Miles Russell, 15, earns another Korn Ferry Tour start with top-25 finish

Cards final-round 66 at lecom suncoast classic, youngest to top-25 on record.

Change Text Size

After a historic made cut at the LECOM Suncoast Classic, high school freshman Miles Russell could’ve been forgiven for cruising through the weekend, relishing his accomplishment before returning to Earth science, geometry and the standard cadence of life as a high school freshman.

Russell, 15, had other ideas.

Russell shook off a slow start Saturday – 4 over through three holes – to grind out a third-round, 1-under 70 at Lakewood National Golf Club’s Commander course, and he turned on the jets with a final-round, 5-under 66 that included seven birdies in a 10-hole stretch (Nos. 4-13). That was good for a T20 finish at 14-under 270, becoming the youngest player on record (since 1983) to notch a top-25 finish on the PGA TOUR or Korn Ferry Tour.

With the top-25 finish, Russell also qualifies for next week's Veritex Bank Championship in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. (Prior to turning 18, players are not eligible for non-member Korn Ferry Tour Points toward Special Temporary Membership.)

"It was an awesome week. It was a blast," Russell said afterward. "Especially for my first one, you may get a couple weird looks, like, 'Who's the little kid on the range?' But, you know, everybody was so nice and so helpful with everything.

"I just try to kind of go with flow and take it as it comes to me, and I'm trying to just stay cool. I was able to hit some good shots in the right moments."

The Jacksonville Beach, Florida, resident authored history this week as the youngest player to make a cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at 15 years, 5 months, 18 days (surpassing Gipper Finau at the 2006 Utah Championship) and captivated the greater golf world with his combination of youthful firepower (17 birdies, three eagles) and veteran poise. He arrived at Lakewood National with belief in his abilities to compete at this level, a humble confidence that he backed up with four consecutive under-par rounds in competition. Russell shot 31 on his first nine Thursday and kept the pedal down through the weekend, unfazed by the moment as the buzz continued to build.

Russell, the AJGA's top-ranked junior, cannot join the Korn Ferry Tour this year, or next year, or the year after. But he’s welcome to stay around for a while if the results correspond. Seventy-two holes in west Florida have proven that he’s got the requisite game, here and now.

Miles Russell, 15, becomes youngest to make cut on Korn Ferry Tour

Russell advanced to the weekend with ease, opening the LECOM in rounds of 68-66 to finish three strokes inside the 36-hole cut line. His first three holes Saturday represented a test of adversity – a double bogey at No. 1, followed by bogeys at 2 and 3. But the reigning winner of the Junior PLAYERS and Junior PGA Championship remained poised, going bogey-free the rest of the day while adding an eagle and three birdies. It meant that rather than holding a spot near the bottom of the board, he stood T48 into Sunday, three strokes off the pace for a top-25 finish.

He was within striking distance and he took advantage. It means another week on the Korn Ferry Tour and the valuable experience that accompanies it.

"When I play well, I think I can compete with some of the better pros, but this week I played well and I think it kind of showed it a little bit," Russell said. "But good play is always good, and definitely confidence-boosting to finish where we're going to finish today."

Russell was safely inside the top 25 at the time, but plenty of competitors remained on the course who could have bumped him out. His number held up, though, for the first top-25 on record by a player under age 16. Another historical marker for a player too young for a driver's license but whose game is on the road to the Lone Star State.

Tesla layoffs hit high performers, some departments slashed, sources say

'i lost 20% of my team, some really good players too'.

high tech high tour

Tesla management told employees Monday that the recent layoffs — which gutted some departments by 20% and even hit high performers — were largely due to poor financial performance, a source familiar with the matter told TechCrunch.

The layoffs were announced to staff just a week before Tesla is scheduled to report its first-quarter earnings. The move comes as Tesla has seen its profit margin narrow over the past several quarters, the result of an EV price war that has persisted for at least a year. The company delivered a record 1.81 million vehicles in 2023. Its margins, however, took a hit after Tesla repeatedly slashed prices in a bid to drum up sales and undercut the competition.

Tesla informed employees that more than 10%, or about 14,000 workers, will be laid off across the global organization that has operations in the United States, Europe and China. In a regulatory filing , Tesla referred to the layoffs as a “company-wide restructuring.” The layoffs, which affected employees across all departments and seniority levels, were made to reduce costs and increase productivity to prepare for its “next phase of growth,” according to an internal email from CEO Elon Musk that TechCrunch has viewed.

High performers also cut

Many of the laid-off employees were high performers, according to two sources who spoke to TechCrunch on condition of anonymity. One source expressed shock at the number of talented employees cut and noted that many of those affected were working on projects that have fallen lower on Tesla’s priority list. The source declined to specify which projects.

Some departments saw layoffs beyond the 10% outlined in the companywide email, according to sources. One manager told TechCrunch that 20% of their employees were cut.

“I lost 20% of my team, some really good players too,” they said.

The shakeup also comes as Musk continues to bend the company’s trajectory toward building fully self-driving cars. Tesla recently dropped plans to build a lower-cost EV that would retail starting at around $25,000, opting instead to use the underlying platform being developed to power an alleged robotaxi that Musk said will debut August 8.

Musk previously tried to prioritize the dedicated robotaxi vehicle project, according to his biographer, Walter Isaacson. In 2022, he told employees that he wanted a “clean robotaxi” with no steering wheel or pedals. Tesla lead designer Franz von Holzhausen and engineering VP Lars Moravy kept running the low-cost EV project in secret and eventually convinced him to make both — that is, until last week when it was reported that Musk changed his mind.

Top execs leave

Two high-profile executives — Drew Baglino, Tesla’s SVP of Powertrain and Energy, and Rohan Patel, VP of Public Policy and Business Development — also left the company .

Patel told TechCrunch he decided Sunday evening to leave Tesla because of “[b]ig overall changes” at the company. Patel, who had been engaging regularly with Tesla customers and fans on X in recent months, declined to be specific. He noted in a message that it would be “better for me not to speculate. … Tesla is going to be stronger than ever, and change is good,” he added.

Baglino told TechCrunch that after 18 years, it was time to leave Tesla. “I feel good about the impact I’ve been able to achieve, my leadership team is strong, the energy businesses I’m responsible for are doing well, etc.,” he wrote in a message to TechCrunch.

“Baglino was in charge of powerdrives and new battery projects, and there’s a sense that there isn’t a whole lot of innovation that’s sustainable at this point, which is probably why Baglino is leaving,” Sandeep Rao, head of research at London-based financial services company Leverage Shares, theorized in an interview with TechCrunch.

Baglino’s departure comes just a few months after Tesla’s previous CFO, Zachary Kirkhorn, stepped down. In January, Musk posted on X , formerly Twitter, that he would want to have around 25% voting control of Tesla in order to focus more fully on the company, rather than on his other companies, and help the EV maker become a leader in AI and robotics.

This article was updated to include information from a regulatory filing that refers to the layoffs as a “restructuring.”

Teenager Miles Russell makes Korn Ferry Tour history in first pro start with top-20 showing

Fifteen-year-old Miles Russell made a hard push up the leaderboard at the Korn Ferry Tour’s LECOM Suncoast Classic, rising to as high as tied for third place.

Russell shot a final-round 66 and was 14-under-par for the week at the event at Lakewood National in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. After a bogey on 18 he was tied for 15th as he walked off the course. He finished in a 10-way tie for 20th place.

Russell, who is 15 years, five months and 19 days old, became the youngest player to make the cut in a Korn Ferry Tour event after shooting first- and second-round scores of 68 and 66, including a front-nine 31 on Thursday.

The left-handed Russell followed that up with a 70 on Saturday, well within his stated goal of a top 25 in his first professional start (he’s playing on a sponsor exemption). He did far better than that, grabbing an early birdie on the par-4 4th, then going birdie-birdie-bogey-birdie-birdie-par-birdie-birdie over the next eight holes. That’s 6 birdies, one par and one bogey against two par 3s, three par 4s and three par 5s.

With a top-25 finish, Russell is automatically eligible for next week’s Veritex Bank Championship in Arlington, Texas.

Russell and Guan Tian Liang are the only players younger than 16 to make a cut in a PGA Tour or Korn Ferry Tour event. Russell drew praise from Phil Mickelson on X , the latter giving a fellow left-handed golfer praise for “playing such incredible golf.”

He broke one of Tiger Woods’ records last year, becoming the youngest player to be named the AJGA Player of the Year. Russell, who is from Jacksonville Beach, Fla., is a high school freshman who has also won the Junior PGA and Junior Players Championship events. He shot a 66 at TPC Sawgrass in the latter. Russell said that he began playing golf at age 2 and broke par by age 6.

Russell told reporters Friday that he has a sponsor exemption into the PGA Tour’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship in November. In the meantime, he expects to continue to play AJGA events as well as elite amateur tournaments.
