The French verb  visiter  means "to visit," and it's a relatively easy word to remember because it resembles its English counterpart. When you want to use it in the present, past, or future tenses, you will need to conjugate it. 

How to Conjugate Visiter ​

If you have studied many French verbs, you've likely come across a number that are  regular - er verbs  as this is a very common conjugation pattern.  Visiter  falls into this category, so you can apply the same endings you learned for similar verbs to this one.

The first step in any verb conjugation is identifying the verb stem. In this case, that is  visit- . As you work through the conjugations, various endings will be added to indicate which tense the verb is used in.

The indicative verb mood is used most often in French. You will use it for the basic conjugations of  visiter  in the present, future, and imperfect (past) tenses. All you need to do is study the chart and find the correct form that matches both the subject pronoun and the tense. For instance, "I am visiting" is  je visite  and "we will visit" is  nous visiterons .

Visiter  and the Present Participle

When you add the ending - ant to the stem of visiter you form the present participle . The result is the word visitant . It can become an adjective, gerund, or noun as well as a verb depending on the context of the sentence.

Visiter  in the Past Tense

Another common way to form the past tense of visiter is to use the passé composé . This requires a simple construction using the auxiliary verb avoir and the past participle visité . For example, "I visited" is j'ai visité and "we visited" is nous avons visité.

More Conjugations of  Visiter

There are a few other conjugations of  visiter  that you may encounter as your French fluency increases. For instance, the subjunctive verb mood is used when the action of visiting is uncertain. Similarly, the conditional verb mood is used when the action is dependent on something else occurring.

It is likely that you'll only find the  passé simple and imperfect subjunctive forms in French writing. However, it's good to be able to at least recognize them.

When you want to use  visiter  in short sentences, the  imperative verb mood can be used. For this, you do not have to include the subject pronoun. Instead of  tu visite , you can use  visite .

You can also create a memory palace . The idea of this memorization device is to visualize a location—say, your childhood home—and populate it with the relevant vocabulary. For example, you could visualize a building and each hallway, room or object would be associated with a word you wish to remember.

It’s a great technique for visual learners to create context for seemingly isolated terms.

The best way to remember any new French vocabulary is to learn it in context. And one of the best ways to do that is to watch videos in French from French sources. You can easily find French TV shows and movies on streaming services like Netflix. If you prefer shorter videos, you can find French videos about all sorts of topics on YouTube.

Visiter vs Rendre visite à whether you visit a place or a person

In French, you use two different verbs to express visiting someone and visiting a place.

How to say to visit someone or a place in French

Look at these sentences:

J' ai visité Paris. I visited Paris.

Il a visité le Musée d'Orsay. He visited the Museum of Orsay.

J' ai rendu visite à ma soeur. I visited / went to see my sister.

Il rend visite à ses parents. He's paying a visit to his parents.

Note that the verb visiter  is used with places .  

When visiting people (friends, family...), we use the expression rendre visite à [quelqu'un]  and never visiter   alone. (This is similar to the English to pay a visit to [someone]. )

Which french verb to use when you’re visiting a place, a friend, or a professional..

In English, we can use the verb ‘to visit’ for a place, a person, or a doctor.

However, in French, le verbe visiter is only used when a traveler is doing some sightseeing, a guided tour, or a house :

Je visite la Tour Eiffel aujourd’hui . = I’m visiting the Eiffel Tower today.

Demain, je vais visiter le vieux quartier de Bruxelles = Tomorrow I’m going to visit the old quarter of Brussels.

Vous voulez visiter la maison ? = do you want to visit the house?

So what verb is used when we’re visiting a friend or a family member?

You’ll hear the French say rendre visite (you’re really saying that you’re paying a visit to someone):

Je rends visite à mon père ce soir = I’m visiting my dad tonight.

Nous rendons visite à Carla ce week-end = we’re visiting Carla this weekend

If you wish to tell someone to come and visit you, you can say:

Venez me rendre visite!

Note that the small preposition ‘ à’ has to follow after ‘ rendre visite’.

And what about visiting a doctor, a dentist, a lawyer, etc…?

Je vais voir le dentiste demain matin = I’m going to see the dentist tomorrow morning

Je vais chez le dentiste = I’m going to the dentist

Note that if you are going to use aller only, then you’ll need to follow with chez for indicating at someone’s home or professional place.

However, if you’re visiting colleagues, your boss, or clients, it’s best to just use aller voir.

Je vais voir un client = I’m goint to see a client

Je vais voir le patron = I’m going to see the boss

You’ll hear at times the word visite used as a noun such as : “ je vous souhaite une bonne visite !” (I wish you a good visit!) but again this will be in reference to a travelling related visit such as a visit of a museum.

Now I’ll give you a hint – when in doubt if you should use visiter , rendre visite or aller voir , you can always use aller voir for all the above contexts:

Je vais voir la Tour Eiffel

Je vais voir mon père ce soir

Je vais voir le docteur

Je vais voir le grand patron

In French, there is a difference between visiting a place , and visiting someone .

It’s very easy to say that you are visiting a place.

All you have to do is conjugate the French verb visiter .

Je vais visiter Paris. I am going to visit Paris.

However, the idiom for visiting someone is slightly different.

In the next chapter you will learn how to say “to visit someone” in French!

To Visit Someone In French

If you want to say “to visit someone”, then you will use the following idiom:

• rendre visite à [quelqu’un] = to visit [someone]

Je vais rendre visite à mes grands-parents . I am going to visit my grand parents.

Il ne va pas rendre visite à sa sœur . He is not going to visit his sister.

Laurent rend visite à Janine . Laurent is visiting Janine.

Nous rendons visite à mes parents . We are visiting my parents.

If the sentence is in the futur proche , then you will have to use the infinitive of the verb rendre .

If the sentence is in the present tense , then you will have to conjugate rendre .

In both cases, you MUSN’T conjugate the verb visiter .

Also, if you want to say that someone is going to visit me/you/him/her/us/them , then you will use:

• me/te/lui/nous/vous/leur + rendre visite

Je vais lui rendre visite . I am going to visit her.

Vas-tu me rendre visite ? Are you going to visit me?

Allez-vous leur rendre visite ? Are you going to visit them?

Ils vont lui rendre visite . They are going to visit her.

I’ve written about France for 20 years – here are my favourite places to visit

After a lifetime exploring the country’s cities, coast and countryside, our France expert chooses her personal highlights My favourite places to eat in France

When you can gaze on the salt pans of Guérande, near Nantes, cycle through lavender fields in Drôme, in the south-east, and bask in the splendour of the Cirque de Gavarnie in the Pyrénees, you have to wonder how France got so lucky with its diverse landscapes. Most recently, the volcanic landscape of the Massif Central captured my heart. The chain of extinct volcanoes runs south from the highest, Le Puy de Dôme (there’s a rack railway to the top) near Clermont-Ferrand.

South of the rugged peaks in Cantal, the town of Chaudes-Aigues has two hot springs – Europe’s hottest at 65C and 82C – that spurt from spouts in the town square. Two hours east, the extraordinary town of Le Puy-en-Velay is the starting point for the medieval pilgrimage trail to Santiago de Compostela . Its Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe chapel sits atop a basalt needle, while its other peaks are topped by the cathedral and a Notre Dame de France statue.

It isn’t just the landscapes that vary so much across the country – France’s coast has so many characteristics there is a name for every stretch. On the Côte d’Opale , on the north coast, I’ve sat and admired the belle époque villas; further west, on Brittany’s Côte de Granit Rose , I have swum in coves surrounded by pink-hued boulders carved into extraordinary shapes by wind and sea. In the south-west, I’ve basked in the sunshine and dug my toes into silky blond sand as the Atlantic rolled into shore at Capbreton on the Côte d’Argent; and I’ll never forget an impromptu paddle from a tiny beach hidden between oyster farmers’ huts at L’Herbe on Cap Ferret , on the other side of Arcachon Bay.

France’s coast is dotted with islands, all with distinct identities. On the Atlantic coast, I fell in love with the Île d’Yeu , which was reminiscent of Greece, with its whitewashed houses and colourful shutters, while the Île de Porquerolles off the Côte d’Azur saw us cycling past pine-fringed beaches and vineyards.

The one that really sticks in the memory, though, is Brittany’s Ushant (Île d’Ouessant in French), in the Iroise Sea off the far west coast. On a warm summer’s day, we cycled over its moorland, past lighthouses and green-shuttered cottages. When we reached the Pointe de Pern, the most westerly point of metropolitan France, I couldn’t believe the roar as the Atlantic waves crashed against the tumble of brown rocks.

Those in search of natural highs aren’t short of opportunities in L’Hexagone . Now our children are a bit older, paddling on the beach won’t cut it, so we’ve hired sand yachts and darted across the broad beach at Barbâtre on the Île de Noirmoutier off the coast near Nantes. In many forests across France, we’ve swung and climbed through the trees on acc robranche treetop adventures.

Of course, the activity the French excel at is le cyclisme , and the Île de Ré off the west coast was made for it. We’ve pedalled along smooth cycle paths between whitewashed villages adorned with hollyhocks, our legs powered by salted butter caramels.

Paris is always the first stop in France for art lovers, and little can rival the experience of standing eye-to-eye with Van Gogh’s self-portrait at the Musée d’Orsay , reflecting that, as he made those distinct and colourful brush strokes as a penniless artist, he would never know his impact on the art world 135 years later.

Beyond Paris, I’ve loved getting immersed in lesser-known galleries, which also offer moments of wonder. Le Havre’s light-filled Musée d’art moderne André Malraux holds one of France’s largest collections of impressionist art, including works by Renoir, Pissarro, Sisley, Degas and Courbet. It’s a must-visit during this year’s Normandy impressionist festival .

It never ceases to amaze how the French manage to make museums on such wide-ranging subjects, from the surprisingly fascinating Musée de la Fraise (strawberry) in Plougastel, Brittany to the exquisitely intricate models in the Musée Cinema et Miniature in Lyon. There are big-budget ones, such as the recently revamped Musée National de la Marine in Paris’s Trocadéro, which blends historical model ships and paintings with modern innovations such as a giant CGI wave to bring the history of seafaring alive.

But smaller museums can be as engaging. In a beautiful mansion in the north-eastern walled town of Langres, the House of Enlightenment tells the story of the town’s most famous son, Denis Diderot, the philosopher, art critic and writer who wrote most of the 1751 Encyclopédie .

Architecture

France’s many chateaux and cathedrals get the most attention, but I’ve been enchanted by more modern architecture, too. On my visit to Le Corbusier’s concrete Saint-Pierre church in Firminy, in the Loire Valley, I caught a group of music students practising four-part harmony in the extraordinary acoustics of the sloped walls, while the sunlight was shining through dozens of tiny windows like a constellation of stars.

In Le Havre, towering above the Lego-like apartment blocks, is the similarly impressive St Joseph’s church . Inside, I sat beneath the kaleidoscopic octagonal tower in reverence as I stared up at its 12,000 panes of coloured glass.

I love Lyon for its gastronomy, Marseille for its myriad quartiers and characters, Bordeaux for its splendour and Nice for its light. But lesser-known cities also hold delights. Nantes is a creative powerhouse with its own magic, encapsulated by the Machines de Nantes , including the giant robotic elephant that roams around an island in the Loire, next to a three-storey Jules-Verne-inspired carousel (their creations can be found in Toulouse and Calais now, too). There are street art installations and, along the river towards Saint-Nazaire, a collection of  kooky art installations .

Getting around

There’s a joy to making the journey part of the holiday, especially for those who choose not to have the stress of the airport and want to keep their carbon footprint low. I’ve always loved standing on deck as the ferry comes into Saint Malo : the view of its stately walled town is particularly good from the sea.

Driving in France is a joy (certainly compared with the much busier UK): those empty roads lined with plane trees are justly famous. The A49 from Grenoble is an awesome route as it skirts past the Vercors mountains and walnut groves, while the Millau viaduct on the A75 is always a thrill to cross.

And trains are fast, efficient and comfortable; I love the route along the Côte d’Azur from Marseille to Nice – TGV OuiGo trains depart from Marseille’s Saint-Charles station and arrive in Nice Ville in less than three hours, offering glimpses of the shimmering Mediterranean between the terracotta roofs and cypress pines.

Where to stay

Whatever you have in mind for accommodation, France has it. A bedroom in a castle – Château de Saint Paterne is my favourite. A beautiful gîte – Le Mas and Le Mazet in the Dordogne eclipsed all others. A cute chambres d’hôtes , where the owners treat you like long-lost friends – I’ve never been disappointed by Sawday’s places. And the French are in a class of their own when it comes to more unusual places. There are fabulous tree houses – at La Chouette Cabane in the Mayenne our delicious dinner was winched up to the deck on a pulley and accompanied by a frog chorus as night fell.

In lesser-known Lorraine, the rustic cabin with its own sauna next to the Lake de Pierre-Percée felt wildly remote. And then there was the eco-lodge shaped like a cow: in deepest Burgundy, a region rightly proud of its beef and cheese, the Vache Ecolodge sleeps 12 and is decorated on a bovine theme throughout. Quite mad, but brilliant fun.

French journalist Julien Laurens shares who played better last night… Ibrahima Konate or William Saliba

Liverpool’s medical staff could be forgiven for watching yesterday’s international matches from behind their respective sofas.

At such a crucial stage of the season, the Reds cannot afford to pick up any more injuries. With a bunch of needless friendlies being played – and so many Liverpool players involved – it felt inevitable that someone would be struck down.

Prior to the games, the most likely candidate for that had felt to be Ibrahima Konate . Despite only returning from injury in the past few days, Konate started France’s match against Chile. Jurgen Klopp must have been furious.

As it turned out, Konate was fine. Andy Robertson was instead the unlucky soul to pick up the dreaded international injury curse. Again. Ibou actually played the full 90 minutes alongside Arsenal’s William Saliba, a man he’s very often compared against.

With both Konate and Saliba playing for teams at the top of the Premier League table, a comparison between them is natural.

Liverpool fans will tell you – rightly – that Konate is the better of the two . Meanwhile, Arsenal fans will – incorrectly – push Saliba as the number one.

So far for the national team, coach Didier Deschamps has favoured the view of Liverpool supporters. And given some footage seen of the two players coming up against each other in France training last week, you can see why.

But last night, Deschamps opted to pair them together. And according to French journalist Julien Laurens, there was a clear victor in the battle between Konate and Saliba.

Speaking on ESPN FC following France’s 3-2 win over Chile, Laurens declared Saliba to have been the most impressive of Les Blues centre-backs.

Deschamps chose to use four different central defenders across his team’s two games, and Laurens actually thinks Saliba was the outstanding player of that quartet.

“I think he did really well tonight to show Deschamps that there’s certainly more to come and better to come,” raved the journalist.

“He’s still a young player but already for me, obviously Chile are not as strong but, of the four centre-backs [used by France across the two games] he was the best one of the four.”

With work to do to force his way into France’s best XI, Saliba needed a good display. Konate meanwhile has nothing left to prove. We’ll let him have this one.

For now, it’s back to club football where these two look set to tussle each other for the Premier League title. The Arsenal man may have won this battle, but let’s hope Ibou wins the war.

Flights to Erie, Pennsylvania, and Little Rock, Arkansas, are averaging over $900, according to travel platform Hopper. Hotel prices in major domestic cities slated to witness the eclipse are up over 200% compared to the weekend before the eclipse. The average nightly rate in Buffalo, New York, for a stay during the eclipse is $608.

However, there are still some last-minute deals available for travelers who want to witness a total solar eclipse.

"For those that haven't yet booked, we recommend booking both flights and hotels ASAP as prices will continue to rise as we get closer to April 8 and availability may become limited," Lindsay Schwimer, Consumer Travel Expert at Hopper, said in a statement to USA TODAY. That goes for rental cars, too.

Speaking another language is always helpful, especially if you love to travel. And French, commonly thought of as one of the most beautiful in the world, is also more useful than you might realize. Here are 25 destinations outside of France where you can put your French language skills to good use!

Home to delicious beer, chocolate, waffles, and fries (no, they actually didn’t originate in France), Belgium is also a French-speaking country. The language is one of three officially spoken in the country; the other two are Dutch and German. French is mostly spoken in the capital, Brussels, and in the south of the country.

Another multilingual state that borders France, the Grand Duchy has French, German, and Luxembourgish as official languages. However, French is one most commonly used on signs and in written communication in the country. You’ll also find it most helpful for small talk and chatting with residents.

Switzerland

Yet another European country with French as one of the official languages (the others are German, Italian, and Rhaeto-Romance). You’ll find French most useful in Geneva and the surrounding area, although it’s used throughout Switzerland.

Many people make the mistake of assuming that this tiny state is a part of France. And while Monaco is surrounded by its’ much larger neighbor and uses the French language, it is a sovereign city-state with a monarchy. There is also a Monégasque language that has official status.

Aosta Valley

This region of Italy is located in the northwest of the country, near France. Latin was replaced by French as the official language after the fall of the Roman Empire and then, in the 19th century, was replaced with Italian. Today, the region is bilingual, and you’ll see French and Italian written on road signs and hear the two spoken by locals.

The French Empire had a strong presence in North Africa, and thus many nations in the region still use French as an official language. Morocco is one of these, and French is widespread along with Arabic and various Berber dialects. As a visitor, you’ll find it extremely useful when speaking to locals or reading signs and menus.

Algeria’s official languages are Arabic and Berber, but French is also commonly understood. While not as widely used as in neighboring Morocco, it will be your best bet if you don’t speak one of the official languages.

Another former French colonial outpost, the language is used and understood throughout the country in addition to Arabic and Tunisian. It’s estimated over half the population speaks French, and it’s the teaching language of high schools in the country.

Cameroon was a colony of both the UK and France in the early 20th century. So, English and French are spoken in the country. However, French is the most prevalent, with eight of 10 regions considered Francophone. Locals also speak numerous other indigenous languages.

Ivory Coast

Known as “Côte d’Ivoire” in French, this coastal nation uses the old colonial language as the official one. Additionally, numerous indigenous languages also have recognized status in the Ivory Coast.

Senegal has six recognized indigenous languages, the most well-known and commonly spoken is Wolof. However, French is still the official language of the country despite Wolof being more widely used and understood.

Yet another multilingual former French colony, Burundi has three official languages. In addition to French, Kirundi, and Swahili are recognized by the government. In 2014, English also gained status in the country.

Republic of the Congo

Also known as the Congo or Congo-Brazzaville, it is not to be confused with its neighbor, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Formerly known as the French Congo, due to colonization, the language is still the official one of use to this day. The local Bantu language, Kituba, Lingala, and numerous other indigenous languages are also widely spoken.

Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)

The DRC has four main languages: Kikongo (Kituba), Lingala, Swahili, and Tshiluba. However, as a former Belgian colony, French is still widely used and understood.

Togo is a very multilingual country, and in addition to the official language, French has over 40 in use throughout the country. Many signs will be in French, and most locals speak some.

Yet another former French colony, visitors to Mali will find the language very useful in most interactions. Additionally, the country is home to more than 80 other local languages.

The British and French fought over Canada, with the former finally winning out, but the Francophone portion of the population remained influential. So much so that the country has two official languages: English and French, with over 70 indigenous languages in existence. And the province of Québec only has French as the official language (and frequently threatens to secede from Canada). Its neighbor, New Brunswick, is the only officially bilingual province.

When the U.S. purchased Louisiana territory from the French in 1803, it probably wasn’t considered how long the language would stick around. In the 1960s, efforts were made to revive the language in the state after decades of suppression and Americanization. Now, French is spoken by an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 residents, ranging from traditional and Cajun (Louisiana) French.

The Spanish colonized this Caribbean island before the Brits and French arrived. Then in 1763, France took over, and in 1943, it became semi-autonomous before gaining its current status as an Overseas Department in 1946. French is the official language, and visitors will find it helpful to know basic phrases, but Martinique Creole is unofficially the local language of communication.

Another current French Overseas Department first colonized by the Spanish, Guadalupe has French as its official language, but like Martinique, Creole is widely used by locals.

French Guiana

This small section of the South American continent, located between far northeastern Brazil and Suriname and Guyana, is a former colony that housed a penal colony of France. Today, it is a French Overseas Department. Thus, French is the official language, but Creole is the language of use by many residents.

French Polynesia

Colonized by the French, the islands received the name “French Polynesia” after being designated a French Overseas Territory in the '50s. Then, in 1977, the country received autonomy and is now considered an overseas country of the French Republic, with French as the official language.

New Caledonia

The British initially colonized these islands in the South Pacific before the French took over in 1853. Recent years have brought referendums for independence, but a slim majority of the population has voted in favor of remaining part of France. French remains the official language of the territory.

This Pacific country is very multilingual, with French, English, and Bislama all considered official languages. However, it doesn’t stop there, as over 100 languages are spoken on the island. After centuries of colonization, independence was finally declared in 1980. 

Wallis & Futuna

Made up of the Wallis, Futuna, and Alofi islands, all three were French protectorates and colonies until 1961. Then, the islands became a French Overseas Territory until 2003, when they received status as an Overseas Collectivity. French has been the official language throughout all the status changes.

House passes $1.2 trillion spending bill, sending it to Senate hours before shutdown

WASHINGTON — The House voted 286-134 on Friday to pass a sweeping $1.2 trillion government funding bill , sending it to the Senate just hours before the deadline to prevent a shutdown .

Soon after, the Senate voted 78-18 to advance the bill procedurally, but all 100 senators will need to greenlight a final vote to skip other hurdles and pass the bill before the midnight deadline. If that doesn’t happen, the government would be forced into a partial shutdown on Saturday morning. President Joe Biden has called on Congress to pass it quickly and said he’ll sign the bill.

“This hasn’t been a perfect process. But we should never let the perfect be the enemy of the good,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said. “This is a good result for the American people.”

The bill , released early Thursday, funds the departments of Homeland Security, State, Labor, Defense, Health and Human Services and various other agencies. Together with the $459 billion bill passed earlier this month, it fully funds the federal government to the tune of $1.659 trillion through September, after months of stopgap bills and negotiations.

“I’m confident we will take up and pass this bill. Whether or not we can avoid a government shutdown solely depends on a small number of Senate Republicans, and whether they will drag this out through the weekend,” Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., said on MSNBC.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said the impending two-week recess would motivate the Senate to get unanimous consent to vote quickly and pass the bill. “This is the United States Senate,” Murkowski said. “We’re motivated by recesses.”

The legislation was negotiated by House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., top appropriators in both parties and the White House. Both parties touted some wins: Democrats said they “defeated outlandish cuts” proposed by Republicans and kept out abortion restrictions. GOP leaders touted more immigration funding for border agents and detention beds for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“Against all odds, House Republicans refocused spending on America’s most crucial needs, at home and abroad,” House Appropriations Chair Kay Granger, R-Texas, said before the vote.

Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, complained that members only had about 24 hours to review the bill and attacked his fellow Republicans for failing to secure the immigration restrictions they wanted, referring to the killing of a University of Georgia student that has been a rallying cry for GOP members.

“My Republican colleagues cannot go campaign against mass parole and use the name of Laken Riley , because you pass a bill in her name, when you fund the very policies that lead to her death,” Roy said on the House floor. “Any of my Republican colleagues you want to spend this year campaigning against open borders — it’s a laugh. Because today, if you vote for this abomination of a bill, you will be voting to fund it. You will be voting to fund the very policies that you will campaign against.”

Prior to the vote, leaders of the hard-right House Freedom Caucus held a news conference trashing the bill, calling it “capitulation,” “surrender" and “chock full of crap.”

But they didn’t take questions about whether they’ll seek to retaliate by removing Johnson or calling for changes in GOP leadership, whom they blamed for the final product.

“This is not a personnel discussion for us today,” Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., the chair of the Freedom Caucus, told reporters. “We’re talking about the bill and the policy today.”

On the eve of the vote, Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., who led the push to remove Kevin McCarthy , R-Calif., as speaker last year, said he doesn’t plan on filing a motion to vacate Johnson.

“If we vacated this speaker, we’d end up with a Democrat,” Gaetz told reporters. “I worry that we’ve got Republicans who would vote for Hakeem Jeffries at this point. I really do.”
