LEGENDARY POP ICON ADAM ANT ANNOUNCES FIRST U.S. TOUR IN FIVE YEARS

ANTMUSIC 2024 KICKS OFF MARCH 21ST IN ST LOUIS, MO

THE ENGLISH BEAT TO SUPPORT

Adam Ant is pleased to announce his ANTMUSIC 2024 U.S. tour, which commences March 21st in St. Louis, MO. The English Beat will be supporting on all of the dates.

In the mid-seventies, Adam Ant joined the band Bazooka Joe as a bassist; they played pubs and colleges around London. On one decisive night in November 1975, Adam saw The Sex Pistols playing their first-ever show, supporting Bazooka Joe. The explosive punk band inspired Adam to start something new. He formed The Ants and began performing around London, landing a residency at the legendary Marquee Club.

In 1979, Adam and the Ants released their debut album,  Dirk Wears White Søx , which immediately topped the independant charts. Adam hired the former Sex Pistols manager  Malcolm McLaren  who suggested a more accessible and pop-oriented, rhythmic variation on punk that inspired a new album,  Kings of the Wild Frontier . Released in 1980, it became a worldwide hit, topping the British charts for twelve weeks.* But it was a ferocious ferocious debut performance on  Top of the Pops  that set fire to the phenomenon. With ‘Antmania’ in full force, Adam received the  Brit Award  for Best British Album.*

Stand and Deliver,  released in 1981 ,  was another chart-topper, and remained in the top spot for five weeks becoming his most successful single, and winning him the prestigious  Ivor Novello Award  for songwriting. His follow-up record,  Prince  Charming , went straight to number one, This honor coincided with Adam becoming the first VJ on the brand new 24-hour music video channel, MTV.

Adam’s solo career started with the album,  Friend or Foe. which had   three top twenty hits in the Billboard Top 100. “Goody Two Shoes'” was also number one in the UK and Australia. After being voted  Sexiest Man Alive  by the viewers of MTV, he celebrated this success in the USA with a  Best New Artist GRAMMY nomination.

In 1983, he appeared on NBC Television Network’s ‘Motown 25 Special’, alongside Michael Jackson and Diana Ross. He release his second solo album,  Strip  which was followed by another solo effort,  Vive Le Rock , recorded with legendary producer, Tony Visconti. This led to a memorable performance of the title track at  Live Aid .

Taking a break from the music business, Adam emerged as an actor, first appearing in theatrical productions then in numerous films that included  Nomads, Junk , and  Slam Dance!, followed by a string of television shows;  La Femme Nikita, Northern Exposure, The Equalizer, and SledgeHammer!  In the 1990s, Adam split his time between acting and music, returning to the studio to record  Manners and   Physique,  which produced  the  Top Ten U.K. hit,  “Room at the Top”. In 1994, Adam recorded his next album,  Wonderful , at London’s famous Abbey Road studios, the Beatles fabled studio.

It would be twelve years before he would play live again, with an acoustic show, in 2007 at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London, where he read extracts from  Stand and Deliver , his recently released brilliant autobiography.

In 2008, Adam was presented with the  Q Music Icon Award , placing him alongside fellow recipients Paul McCartney and Bryan Ferry. In 2011, Adam performed at Hard Rock Calling in London’s Hyde Park. After several successful tours of the US, Europe, and Australia, Adam released his first album in 16 years:  Adam Ant is the Blueblack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner’s Daughter.

In 2014, at the Hammersmith Apollo, Adam performed the entire album,  Dirk Wears White Søx  and released   a DVD of the show. Adam finished off 2015 working on the remastered anniversary release of his iconic LP,  Kings of the Wild Frontier . With the album back in the charts, the sold-out tour that accompanied it found Adam playing the classic and now iconic album, in sequence, to over 30,000 people. Never one to sit idle, in 2017, Adam toured the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand, performing the  Kings of the Wild Frontier  album to great acclaim, followed in 2018 with the ANTHEMS Tour, and in 2019, he returned to the U.S. to perform the  Friend or Foe  album in its entirety. After the global pandemic, Adam embarked on the ANTICS U.K. tour for the Summer of 2022.

Adam Ant is instantly recognized and admired by millions of people around the world. Wherever he performs, there is something personal and unique about his presence that commands attention and respect.

Stuart Leslie Goddard, better known as his stage name, Adam Ant, is a singer songwriter who led his band to success, scoring 10 UK top ten hits at the beginning of the 1980s, three of which were number 1s.

Adam and the Ants were a huge force of nature throughout the music world, founded in May 1977, fronted by Adam Ant himself. They were at the frontline of the post-punk era, and made their radio debut on the John Peel show on January 23rd 1978. It was around this time that they would tour extensively, usually alongside Siouxsie and the Banshees. The band became quite unpopular with a lot of the press with their controversial lyrics, but they soldiered on, until the release of “Dirk Wears White Sox” released on October 30th 1979, making it to number 16 in the UK Albums Chart, and become a gold record.

It was the following year however that the band released the album “Kings of the Wild Frontier” which shot up the charts right to number one, and also charted in the US, Sweden, New Zealand and Australia, eventually being certified Platinum. The album produced the hits, “Dog Eat Dog” which went to number 4 in the UK Singles Chart, and “Antmusic” which went to number 2, whilst making it to number 1 in Australia. They also re-released the title track as a single the following year, and earned themselves another number 2 single.

It paved the way for Adam and the Ants to release “Prince Charming”, a huge album that also became a Platinum record, and produced the title track of course which went to number 1 and the song “Stand and Deliver”, earning the band consecutive number 1 hits. Also from the album was the single “Ant Rap” which went to number 3. After yet another international tour, the band was back into the studio, working on an album called “Friend or Foe” which was later released in October 1982. It went to number 5 in the UK Album charts and was certified Gold. It produced the number one single “Goody Two Shoes” and the number 9 single “Friend or Foe”.

Between the albums “Strip” released on November 1983 and “Wonderful” released on March 7th 1995, the bands success whilst remaining consistent, dropped to charting around the number 20 mark.

On January 21st 2013, they released “Adam Ant Is the Blueblack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner’s Daughter”. The album peaked at number 25.

Live reviews

Adam Ant, well, you may not like him now, but you will! Not too sure about your reasoning behind seeing him play? Thinking to yourself, wasn't he a "girl thing?" Well, I think the girls have done a good job protecting him like a cocooned butterfly waiting to emerge into the light of day. But he's definitely no pretty fly!

He's a hardworking, dedicated rocket with punk roots! But no labels please! Being a person who demands to be entertained fully, and in all areas of life, I have obviously found my fix with the Ant. Adam refuses to leave behind a bored crowd! Pure energy and at the pinnacle of success, you would never think that this close to 60 year old was anything less then a 35 year old man!

I have never thought "pop" with Adam Ant, but some do, because of the mainstream attempt to box him up! But, he escaped and with some hit and misses we have all learned a lesson, it's not about the charts! It's about personal lust and enjoyment of music!

The man rocks and rolls! Screams, sweats, works you up, then drags you around for some more! Charming, slightly a smart ass, witty, and very sexual... undertones of course! I wouldn't want to be anywhere else but at the foot of the stage being purely stimulated, visually, time wise physically, mentally and with songs that span over decades!

If you miss Adam Ant, you have missed out on part of history, that you will never get a chance to blend with! I am proud to have been an AntWarrior from the get go! And trust me, it's not so easy a title to hold, but I will forever love and support a man who's desire is to purely entertain! Every show is unlike the other with the exception..."You will always ROCK!!!" .......And meet a lot of girls all fired up! See you there! Wink!

There is no doubt that Stuart Leslie Goddard will forever remain an icon of the UK's music scene in the 80s. Better known by his eccentric stage persona of Adam Ant, he did not only enjoy commercial success but he also created a tour that was revered globally and took him and a slick live band to all corners of the earth to reach fanbases that can only be described as cult.

Although his original band Adam & the Ants shortly demised after their early fame, Adam quickly went on to record solo albums and singles of equal success in the UK. The nation has always held Adam in high acclaim so he has barely been off the road in his three decade spanning career as the fans continually pack out venues to see the ageing musician. The music may be getting more and more mature yet there is still a charming touch of eccentricity in the costumes and the set this evening as Goddard pulls out covers of 'Cartrouble' and 'Prince Charming' for the crowds which inevitably leads to huge roars of approval. The man simply loves being onstage and shows no sign of slowing his schedule anytime soon.

I have been a devoted fan of Adam Ant since 13 years old. I am now 50. A year and half ago was my first time seeing him at the Observatory in Santa Ana. it was great after all these years to finally see my child hood Idol. when I heard he was coming back to do an A and B side version concert, I jumped right on it. I must say he was much better this time around. 63 years young, 25 song set, and was pitch perfect on them all. He did much of his older tunes to my delight, and words cannot describe what I was watching. Still looks great and by far one of the best shows I have ever seen. Please come back to the states again real soon Adam Ant. Your Number 1 fan will be waiting.

Absolutely brilliant. Adam was on for nearly two hours and didn’t stop for the whole time. He wasn’t very chatty but instead let his music do the talking.

He kicked off the show playing the entire Friend or Foe album replacing the brass sections with some excellent rock guitar. After this Adam launched into a mix of his popular hits with maybe some of his favourite songs which were better known by his ardent fans featuring album tracks from Dirk Wears White Sox and Kings of the Wild Frontier to some great versions of some of Adam’s early songs, better known as B-sides in the heyday of vinyl.

An absolutely compelling performance by a true entertainer.

Fantastic!! This was my first Adam Ant gig and he was incredible, better than I'd expected. The only downside was I think the venue was to small for the amount of people attended, therefore somewhere like the 02 Academy would have been ideal, anyway still awesome. I did like the fact that there was a bar and grill attached to the Arts Club which is where we started off and then just walked back through after the gig to finish off the night, which was excellent. I would definitely go to see him again, I also like the no messing booking of the show with songkick, I opted for the ecomms method.

Again was a fantastic night. Thank you,xx

(Re: Nottingham, UK Anthems final show.) I'll get a little philosophical. I believe our essence/who we are doesn't change with age, appearance, etc.; Adam's comes through so purely while he's on stage it's almost as though his audience can get to know him (at least some facets anyway) just by watching him. Triumphant passion there. Loads of fun, too. His band, too, they're so intense & passionate about what & how they're playing. Super tight. I enjoyed the selection - haven't heard a few of the songs live ever til last night. He has such a nice voice, as do the guys backing up. His music resonates right to the gut. :) Excellent concert.

Glam Skanks was the opening act. They were so AWESOME! When Adam came on stage, I was so glad to see he hasn't lost his spark. He and his band (with 2 drum kits) played music from his album "Friend or Foe", as well as all his hits. They also played music from "Ant Songs", stemming from his time with Adam and The Ants. Everyone was on their feet for the entire 2 1/2+ hour treat. It was raucous, loud, hot and transported everyone back to The Post-Punk Era. I was delighted that Adam Ant has not lost his voice, his look, his energy or his edge. I would 100% love to see him again.

Amazing performance by an amazing artist and his very talented band at Celebrity Theatre. Adam was very animated - dancing, smiling, chatting. The band on point as always. This was my third time seeing Adam on his Anthems Tour and every show seems to be even better than the last. It was a very triumphant return for Adam who hasn't played Phoenix since 1995. Adam is a visionary and a true punk pioneer. And the excellent musicians in his current band - Will, Joe, Jola, Andy & A P Leach - execute Adam's songs with perfection. Adam Ant remains on the top of his game!

Adam Ant was absolutely amazing at the Merriam Theater in Philly on 9/20/19. His vocals were steller and his band was tight and spot on. He had two drummers that were amazing to watch. The drums have always been my favorite part of the Adam Ant style. The two guitarists were incredible. The bassist was impeccable and joined in on the drumming which was super cool. Adam looked sharp and is still one sexy daddy-o! He was engaging and wonderful to watch. Such a great night!

‘Prince Charming’ Adam Ant will be getting up to his ‘Antics’ at the Brighton Centre

‘Prince Charming’ Adam Ant will be getting up to his ‘Antics’ at the Brighton Centre

The legendary Adam Ant has today announced an 18 date UK tour for February and March next year. Titled the ‘Antics’ tour, Adam will be dropping into our city on 13th March 2022, when he will be performing live at the Brighton Centre .

Tickets will be going on sale Friday 28th May 2021 at 10am. You can purchase them HERE or from your usual ticket agency.

Adam said: “I’m very much looking forward to playing live again . . . there’s nothing like it … I hope everyone hasn’t forgotten how to have fun!! …“

It was on a Thursday night, 16th October 1980, when millions of living rooms across the UK were set on fire by a blazing TV performance by Adam and the Ants . After 3 ferocious minutes of ‘Dog Eat Dog’, on the weekly music show, Top of the Pops, the phenomenon rapidly began and they would go on to dominate the charts with extraordinary success.

But this was no ‘overnight success’, Adam Ant had been working hard behind the warpaint and feathers for his moment. The journey had started at Hornsey College of Art, where Adam had teamed up with some college friends to form the band Bazooka Joe. With Adam on bass guitar, they played the pubs and colleges around London and it was on a night in November 1975 that he saw a group that was to change his life forever.

The Sex Pistols played their first ever gig, supporting Bazooka Joe , at St Martins College of Art and the explosive punk band inspired Adam to start something new. He formed The Ants and performed live repeatedly at many venues including the Vortex and The Roxy before getting a Thursday night residency at the famous Marquee club in London.

The band built a huge cult following despite being unpopular with the established music press, and in 1979 they released their debut album, ‘Dirk Wears White Søx’, which topped the independent chart on release. It has been said that if Adam and the Ants had appeared on television at this time, then they would have ‘made it’ but the moderate success made the rest of the band despondent and in early 1980, the Ants left Adam, after an offer to work with the former Sex Pistols manager, Malcolm McLaren.

With a new sense of freedom and clarity, Adam immediately put his ideas for a new ‘warrior’ sound into practice and within months had put together a fresh band that included two drummers.

The new band signed a major label deal and recorded the album ‘Kings Of The Wild Frontier’. Released in November 1980 it became a worldwide hit, spending 12 weeks at number 1. The singles, ‘Kings Of The Wild Frontier’ and ‘Antmusic’ both hit number 2 in the UK chart and ‘Dog Eat Dog’ reached number 4. “Antmania” swept the nation and after winning the Brit Award for ‘Best British Album’, Adam Ant became one of the most publicised faces in Britain.

In May 1981, ‘Stand And Deliver’ hit the number 1 spot and stayed there for 5 weeks, and became his most successful single, winning him the prestigious Ivor Novello Award For Songwriting. On its release, the follow up album and single ‘Prince Charming’ went straight to number one and a further 12 singles went top 30, at one point, Adam had 8 singles in the top 40. . . in one week!

He became the first VJ (video jockey) on MTV and at a time when videos were the most popular way to promote music, Adam’s charismatic performances in some of the most lavish visuals of the period paved the way for his acting career.

His first solo album, ‘Friend Or Foe’ continued his success in the USA, delivering 3 top twenty hits on the Billboard Top 100. ‘Goody Two Shoes’ was also a number 1 in both the UK and Australia and after being voted ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ by the viewers of MTV, he celebrated this success in the USA with a ‘Best New Artist’ Grammy nomination.

In 1983 he appeared on NBC Television Network’s ‘Motown 25 Special’, alongside Michael Jackson and Diana Ross. The second solo album ‘Strip’ produced the top 5 UK hit ‘Puss ‘n Boots’ but the follow-up single ‘Strip’ and the sexy spectacular video was banned by the BBC.

While recording his third solo album ‘Vive Le Rock’ with legendary producer, Tony Visconti, Adam set out on an acting career by appearing in a theatre production of Joe Orton’s ‘Entertaining Mr Sloane’ at The Royal Exchange in Manchester.

In 1985 Adam performed ‘Vive Le Rock’ at Live Aid and spent the next few years concentrating solely on acting in a string of films including Nomads, Junk and Slam Dance! as well as appearing in several US TV shows such as La Femme Nikita, Northern Exposure, The Equalizer and Sledge Hammer!

adam ant antics tour

During the 1990’s, Adam again, split his time between acting and music, returning to the studio to record and release the album ‘Manners And Physique’ in 1990 which included the UK top 20 hit, ‘Room At The Top’. The follow up album, ‘Persuasion’ remains in limbo without an official release to this day, but in 1994 Adam recorded his next album , ‘Wonderful’ in London’s famous Abbey Road studios. Released the following year, the album, along with ‘Wonderful’ the single and the follow up ‘Gotta Be A Sin’ were accompanied by successful tours of the UK and USA.

It would be twelve years before he would play live again, with an acoustic show, in 2007, at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London, where he read extracts from ‘Stand And Deliver’ his recently released autobiography.

In 2008, Adam was presented with the ‘Q Music Icon Award’ placing him alongside fellow recipients Paul McCartney and Bryan Ferry. This rekindled recognition resulted in a series of low key gigs in 2010 which enabled him to select a new band and to perform several sell-out shows in London.

In 2011, Adam performed at the Hard Rock Calling in London’s Hyde Park and over the year continued playing live to over 250,000 people. After 2 successful tours the USA, mainland Europe and Australia, Adam released his first album for 16 years: ‘Adam Ant Is The Blueblack Hussar In Marrying The Gunner’s Daughter’.

adam ant antics tour

2014 saw Adam return to his roots to perform the ‘Dirk Wears White Søx’ album at a sellout show at Hammersmith Apollo, along with 2 live performances for Record Store Day in London that afternoon. This coincided with the release of a limited edition white vinyl of the ‘Dirk’ album.

Adam then closed the year with 4 more performances at Islington’s Assembly Hall. Due to public demand Adam toured the Dirk album early in 2015 at a series of intimate concerts around the country to much critical acclaim with several of the venues selling out within minutes.

A DVD of the 2014 Apollo show was made available and Adam finished off 2015 working on the re-mastered anniversary release of his iconic ‘Kings Of The Wild Frontier’ album, which was released prior to Adam embarking on the ‘Kings Of The Wild Frontier Live 2016’ tour throughout the UK.

With the LP back in the charts, the sold out tour had Adam playing the classic and now iconic album, in sequence, to over 30,000 people, which culminated at Brixton Academy in London in a true riotous Ant gathering with fans coming together from all around the world to be part of the spectacle.

Over the summer of 2016 Adam took part in the Isle of Wight festival closely followed by 3 headlining slots at each of the Rewind festivals in Perth, Cheshire and Henley.

After the phenomenal success of the ‘Kings’ tour Adam returned to the Roundhouse venue in Camden for one additional sold out date, in his hometown, to finish off the year in a glorious celebration of style and jubilation.

adam ant antics tour

The “Dandy Highwayman” headed out on his ‘Friend Or Foe’ tour in 2019 and performed two sold out shows here in Sussex. The first being at the iconic De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea on 3rd December and three days later he was wooing the crowds and showing them exactly how it is done, with a thrilling show here at the Brighton Centre. The Brighton & Hove News Music Team were in attendance at both performances. Read our reviews HERE .

After the global pandemic of 2020, Adam is now very pleased to announce his ‘Antics Tour’ of 2022 which will include dates in the UK and USA.

Adam Ant’s still ready to ‘Stand and Deliver’ as he nears 70

Adam Ant 2024

  • Gary Graff, special to cleveland.com

Forty-five years ago Dirk put on his white socks and Adam Ant was born.

London-born Stuart Goddard became Adam Ant during the punk rock revolution of 1977, forming the band Adam and the Ants and debuting with “Dirk Wears White Sox” in 1979. Despite a false start with the infamous Sex Pistols Svengali Malcolm McLaren, Ant and his Edwardian-attired company became all the rage with hits such as “Antmusic, “Stand and Deliver,” “Prince Charming” and “Ant Rap,” and the persona was strong enough to sustain Ant himself into a solo career that began in 1982.

Since then he’s been more passionate than prolific, with just nine studio albums during these past 45 years -- most recently 2013′s “Adam Ant is the Blueblack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner’s Daughter.” He’s also acted on screens large and small (“Nomads,” “Love Bites,” “The Equalizer,” “Northern Exposure,” “Tales From the Crypt”) and on stage, in “Entertaining Mr. Sloane” and “Funeral Games” and producing the musical “Be Bop a Lula” about early rockers Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent.

Primarily Ant, 69, has been a road warrior; his Friend Or Foe Tour took him around North America and the U.K. during 2019, and he was on the road back in Great Britain This year finds him back on our side of the pond, with show dubbed ANTMUSIC that assures us this rock prince is still charming after all these many years. Her performs Saturday with the English Beat at the Goodyear Theater in Akron.

Tell us about the show?

Ant: After the pandemic, I just want to come back with something that’s a celebration of the entire catalog -- not just the hits but some songs I haven’t played live before out of the catalog and just take a new look on it all.

It’s been 45 years since “Dirk Wears White Sox,” your first album. What’s that feel like?

Ant: I don’t think about the time, really. In the lead-up to a tour I just think about the set I’ve got to do, choosing the order of songs and which songs to put where. That takes quite a bit of time and rehearsal. I’ve got my routine of getting the legs going again and getting in shape for everything, so hopefully by the time I go on stage I’ll be rockin’ ready.

What kind of perspective does that passage of time give you about the career?

Ant: I think I’ve created quite a diverse sort of quality of music. The instrumentation’s different on a lot of songs from album to album. A song from “Dirk” is a completely different kettle of fish than doing one from “Kings of the Wild Frontier” or “Strip” or “Wonderful” or “Friend or Foe.” They’re so different that it’s almost like you have to go back and say, “How’s this gonna work with that? How’s this gonna blend in?”

What accounted for that kind of diversity?

Ant: It’s kind of a lower boredom threshold. With the success of “Kings” I could’ve pretty much stayed in that zone of musicality, but I found that after working the album for over a year and touring and going around the world with it, and you’re wearing similar costumes...After that I wanted to completely start again with a fresh, white page. I look at that with every album and every concept, not just a visual concept but a musical concept as well. Each album was completely different, hopefully, both musically and visually, not just for me but for the audience as well.

What’s surprised you over the years?

Ant: I think hitting in America with the “Goody Two Shoes” single (in 1982). Having a brass section was quite a bit turn for me. I was recording “Goody Two Shoes” in London and there was a group of guys, a brass section, who had just been in there doing a session for somebody and I listened to some of the session they were doing and it was such a completely different avenue of music than anything I’d tried on any of my records before. I thought, “OK, I think I’ll just try with this [sings the horn riff], and instead of doing that on guitar let’s do it on brass. So they tried it and it just sounded really great; these were top-class musicians and they really delivered the goods and we kept it and it sounded great. And then of course we had a new secret ingredient, if you like, to put into the “Friend or Foe” album tracks, and then we made it part of the live show. It was very exciting.

You’ve had that kind of brash attitude throughout your career. Are you generally confident that even the wild ideas will work?

Ant: Yeah. Back then, I think calling the album “Kings of the Wild Frontier” we had to sort of get up some kind of bravado to that and to feel like kings and go out and perform like kings and give it our best shot. In a way we wanted to be the best band around -- not that there’s anything wrong with that. I think it’s something all good bands are; they want to be the best band around, so there’s a healthy competitiveness of really great bands out there.

And there were a lot of those at the time Adam and the Ants crawled out there?

Ant: Oh, definitely. We had the punk scene and the post-punk scene. You had bands like the Stray Cats, for instance, who were my favorite band of all time. But there was some competition there; you really had to bring out your best act on the night, because everybody else would be doing the same thing. You had Dexy’s Midnight Runners and Spandau Ballet and Duran Duran...just a lot of good bands. It was all around us.

Where did the Adam Ant character come from? Was it an extension of Stuart or a completely different kind of person?

Ant: I didn’t look like a ‘70s pop singer, a rock singer; I was sort of skinny. But I used to be a grounds man on the tennis court and get up early in the morning and push a roller up and down a sand tennis court to flatten it. I built up my physique by doing that and doing these sort of physical jobs before I’d go to school. So the shape of me was not waif-like. I liked the name Adam; it seemed to be an appropriate name for someone who looked like I did. And then the Ants came together so I was Adam Ant.

What did the persona allow you to do, or be, that was different from what you otherwise were?

Ant: The best and most useful place to put it was on stage, really, to just immerse yourself in the moment and immerse yourself in the music completely, and then off stage be the opposite of that. I’m quite quiet, really, and just focused on writing the songs. What you saw on stage wasn’t what you saw off stage; off stage I was quite relaxed. I think it would have been too much to try to live with that 24-7.

Other performers have been taken over by their personas, though. How did you keep Adam Ant from taking over the rest of your life?

Ant: It was a sort of balance. I know how to go places. I don’t go to many sorts of events and openings and things like that where I know there’s gonna be people. All throughout that period I just kept to myself, really, apart from the occasional awards event or something like that. Most of the time I was quite happy to be at home with a book. I used to walk a lot. When I was off stage I was focused on writing the music and getting on with the work, which was the most important thing to me. The work was its own reward. I was fortunate in that I was in love with my work -- and I still am.

You turn a certain age (70) in November. How’s that feeling?

Ant: I feel OK. If it’s anything like I feel now, I’m ready to rock, as they say. I still give everything I’ve got on stage; that’s going to be different now, but I still feel there’s a lot of energy to use up on stage and I try to use all of it I’ve got every single night.

With all the years of experience you have now, what would you tell that kid who put the war paint on 45 years ago?

Ant: I’d say go for it -- and I pretty much would’ve done the same thing, anyway. Nothing would have stopped me from going for you. You throw a certain caution to the wind. You’ve got to go for the adventure. You’ve got to pursue it and create the opportunity. That’s the art of it, creating the opportunity and then being ready to take it when it’s there and give it everything you’ve got.

Adam Ant and the English Beat perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 30 at the Goodyear Theater, 1201 E. Market St., Akron. 330-690-2307 or GoodyearTheater.com .

Adam Ant – first night of the tour review

Adam Ant – first night of the tour review

Given recent events in the life and times of Adam Ant , it is almost impossible not to feel a slight twinge of panic as the change-over time between support act Krakatoa and the supposed arrival of our returning hero begins to drag on…and on…and on. The stage certainly looks equipped and ready for a rock ”Ëœn’ roll show, but nothing is ever 100 per cent certain in Antworld. Visions of the 56-year-old pop legend shuffling along the beach in nothing but his pants, brandishing a giant stick of rock and shouting expletives at seagulls may have flashed through the minds of even the most patient and optimistic fans, and yet there is a tangible atmosphere of excitement and goodwill in a packed Concorde tonight: people want this to happen and to go brilliantly, not just for themselves but for the man himself too. Adam’s fans have waited for a long time to see their idol tread the boards again and if recent media appearances have revealed him to be more than a little combative and defiant, that has only added to the sense that this time, finally, he is on course to reignite that once glittering career.

And then the interminable wait ends and there he is. Adam Ant. Large as life, eyes twinkling, a belligerent snarl making it plain from the opening seconds of a spiky and urgent ”ËœPlastic Surgery’ that this is not going to be some cynical, neutered exercise in showbizzy 80s nostalgia. Adam’s new band ”’ seemingly to be known as The Good, The Mad & The Lovely Posse ”’ look and sound fantastic; a ragbag of insouciant, ice-cool misfits, replete with two drummers, that perfectly complement their leader’s eccentric garb and gait. But what really matters is Adam himself, and even though there are moments during the set when he seems a little antagonised and uncomfortable, there is more than enough evidence of both the magisterial pop star that towered above his peers 30 years ago and the cocksure art school punk that never tried nor cared to abide by anyone else’s rules. From ”ËœDog Eat Dog’ and ”ËœStand And Deliver’ through to ”ËœVive Le Rock’ and even a touching ”ËœWonderful’, these are great songs with renewed fire in their bellies, performed by a band that clearly believe in them and understand why this music continues to resonate with so many after all this time. In fact, despite dutifully playing the majority of his biggest hits, Adam is clearly more interested in revisiting the edgier parts of his catalogue and so tonight, much to the delight of the die-hards, we get a huge amount of material from the brilliant ”ËœDirk Wears White Sox’, including bullish, pointedly abrasive versions of ”ËœCatholic Day’, ”ËœCleopatra’ and ”ËœNever Trust A Man (With Egg On His Face)’, plus fistfuls of b-sides and obscurities ranging from the crowd-pleasing likes of ”ËœBeat My Guest’ and set closer ”ËœFall In’ through to a snotty ”ËœFat Fun’ and a turbo-charged ”ËœPhysical’. And while it is undeniable that Adam’s backing vocalists, one of whom appears to be Andrew Sachs’ tabloid-(dis)approved granddaughter Georgina Baillie, are involved more for their boss’s entertainment than for ours, their presence does add a dash of camp and kitsch to what is an otherwise fervently fiery and insubordinate affair. There is an exhilarating frisson of danger in the air tonight: a far cry from the cosiness of the Here And Now has-been circuit that Adam now seems determined to avoid. Far from being a tentative toe in touring waters, tonight is all about expectations being audaciously surpassed. It is also more than apparent that Adam is rather enjoying the opportunity to vent his spleen and settle a score or two. “Beady Eye?” he spits, unprompted, at one point. “Most appropriate name for a band I’ve ever heard. They should be called Monobrow. They’re a pub band! Shit!” He grins wickedly, wiggles his hips and takes a large glug from his beer. Adam Ant is having fun.

Meanwhile, if The Good, The Mad & The Lovely Posse are already this good, barely a handful of shows into their existence, then we can only imagine how monstrous they will sound at the end of this lengthy tour. Gloriously, and perhaps surprisingly, Adam Ant seems more than ready and able to take on the challenge too. He leaves the stage tonight without saying goodbye or thank you: a living, breathing, thrillingly haughty punk rock pop star to the last. How fucking splendid it is to have him back.

Thanks for the link to my photos. I totally concur with excellent review. Like Dom I was mightily relieved to witness an enjoyable and professional show from Adam that lingered long and hard on the punkier end of his back catalogue. Welcome back Adam. A great gig – my favourite so far of 2011.

First time I saw Adam and the Ants was in Brighton. I’ve been to many gigs over the years but these two will be amongst my most memorable. Plastic Surgery has always been a top ten desert island disc for me so what a great way to start the evening. So glad I made it on crutches and with my leg in a brace, welcome back Adam.

omg i saw you there hopping along, you did well. hardcore fan ,well done, i went on my own to the Indigo last night to see him too, and he was alot more talkative. A great set ,i love him x

Agree with everything written here. 30 years between shows and Adam fulfilled every expectation and more. The man knows how to keep his fans happy!

Totally agree, great show. Adam still showed a lot of character without the outbursts, the spitting , the swearing of the previous gigs at the 100 club and Electric ballroom, Also it was good to see all his songs apart from 1 cover… T Rexs classic get it on, were previous shows have been about 50/50 covers. Shame we didnt get any new material though.. especially as the album is already recorded apparently… but all in all,an awesome Rockin show by a true Pop Punk Rock n roll star !!

Been following Adam closely since last Spring and his new beginning. He is getting better and better. Am dashed at not being able to see him right now. Next year perhaps in the UK and sooner if he manages to make it to the Stales before then. Very good article.

First time I’ve seen him, despite being a fan back in the day and have to say the gig was fantastic, if not better. Playing so m uch old stuff really made it for me. He looked good too.

Hope he can pull it off at Guilfest in front of several thousand, if he does then the Skys the limit!!!!

Oh, I tried to get tickets for this gig but they were like golddust, unless you wanted to pay 3x the ticket price on Ebay. I have got a ticket for June and from reading these reviews I cannot wait! I am beyond excited :)

This is a great review, it now seems like the real Adam Ant is back in the room fighting fit and performing to the high quality standard that I myself and many others associate with the man. For once there’s a couple of fantastic clips on YouTube that provide a great advertisement whilst regenerating excitement for the rest of the tour. Hopefully it casts aside and lays to rest any doubts that have stock piled over the past year with every bizarre interview, his overpriced gigs and more. It’s all in the past right? Lets bloody hope so! Fans know that when Adam delivers he delivers with true finesse, Adam Ant the showman is back! Good luck with tour

great review and great that louder Than War were the first to realise just how good Adam was when there were loads of doubters last year. Some of whom were whining on the comments section of this site.

Great article. Even though I was not able to be there I see that Adam is in great form and I can tell he is enjoying being onstage. All the best with this tour and American/Canada is waiting.

Adam was excellent at Dundee on 21/05/2011. After all the tweeting etc he will be unfortunately remembered for the good natured booing about his St Georges Kilt during the encores – and taking it badly, he eventually stormed off stage.

But the gig should really be remembered for the storming set instead and enthusiasm of the crowd who couldn’t believe their luck. And for Adam’s very entertaining and just like 30 years ago show – better even with it’s post punk edge. Even Goody Two Shoes changed vibe into a much edgier number!

I’m sure most people wondered what they were in for. And everyone had one heck of a night. I’d like some of his energy please.

Nice one Adam.

I agree with Gareth. The show in Dundee was fab. Adam Ant still has it. Shame about the end, i was waiting for him to sing “Prince charming”. A fab night though

hurry up and get to Manchester Adam!

Just back from the gig at O2 in Glasgow – and still bouncing! Vibrant, edgy, punky, cheeky it was a belter of a show laced with a touch of bitterness and vulnerability from the man himself. He really engaged with the crowd and we engaged right back! A great night’s entertainment – loved, loved, loved it!

Was at o2 last night – Adam was fantastic – as if he hadnt been away !!!! Wife drove as I was the fan and she hasnt stopped enthusing about the show since !!

im going to see him ion cardiff on the 31st… im wetting myself thinking about it!

saw adam on saturday at the pyramids, must be honest was not sure what to expect as the wife was the one who wanted to go,FANTASTIC,GENUINE SHOWMAN ARTIST WHAT EVER YOU WANT TO CALL ADAM,a full 2 hour set,i think you would be a fool to miss……i think this is the mature adam at his peak and it seems he is where he wants to be judging by how totally relaxed he was on stage, good on you adam, fantastic evening

Awesome gig! not a big fan of his own tunes but any tunes that i did know was superb kings of the wild fronter oh yes!!!! fandabulosis in other words fantastic

just saw adam in brisbane, oz. i think he is better now than he was in the 80’s, and that is saying something. the intensity of the show, the tightness of the band, the live recreation of some of the production on the records, and even how well he is singing compared to many ‘comeback’ tour singers i have seen over the last few years just blew me away. i think i cried during ‘kings of the wild frontier’ – it was that good. i haven’t had goosebumps during a gig since i was a teenager, and i’ve seen hundreds of bands since then now i’m 44. do yourself a favour, that music’s kept it’s taste!

Would you be capable to guide me personally for your webmaster or perhaps the guy that manages your blog, I’d like to determine it could be possible to certainly be a guests poster. creme para estrias httpss://cremepara-estrias.com/

Things To Do

Things to do | adam ant’s masonic cathedral show leads weekend music lineup.

Adam Ant claims “I don’t think about time, really.”

But he does have some perspective on the music he’s made during the 45 years since his debut “Dirk Wears White Sox” — including three albums with his New Wave band The Ants and six as a solo artist.

“I think I’ve created quite a diverse sort of quality of music — so different that it’s almost like you have to go back and say, ‘How’s this gonna work with that?'” says Ant, 69, who was born Stuart Goddard in London. “I look at that with every album and every concept, not just a visual concept but a musical concept, as well.

“Each album was completely different, hopefully, both musically and visually, not just for me but for the audience, as well.”

That variety is exactly what Ant is putting on display with his current tour, dubbed ANTMUSIC after the single from his 1980 album “Kings of the Wild Frontier.” The shows, he promises, will be loaded with hits such as “Stand and Deliver,” “Prince Charming,” “Ant Rap,” “Good Two Shoes”, “Friend or Foe” and more — unrepentant nostalgia even if he’s no longer sporting the Edwardian fashions and war paint of his early ’80s heyday.

“I felt that after the pandemic, I just want to come back with something that’s a celebration of the entire catalog — not just the hits but some songs I haven’t played live before out of the catalog and just take a new look on it all.  I still give everything I’ve got on stage. It’s different now, but I still feel there’s a lot of energy to use up on stage and I try to use all of it I’ve got every single night.”

Adam Ant and the English Beat perform Friday, March 29 at the Masonic Cathedral Theatre, 500 Temple St., Detroit. Doors at 7 p.m. 313-548-1320 or themasonic.com.

Adam Ant: The flamboyant icon of new wave

A s Adam Ant starts his 2024 tour , let's look at who this artist is: Adam Ant, born Stuart Leslie Goddard on November 3, 1954, is an English singer and musician who rose to prominence as the lead singer of the new wave band Adam and the Ants in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He later pursued a successful solo career. Adam Ant's music often combined elements of punk rock, post-punk, and new wave with catchy melodies and theatrical flair. His distinctive style, both musically and visually, made him a significant figure in the British music scene of the early 1980s.

Some of Adam Ant's most well-known songs include "Stand and Deliver," "Prince Charming," "Goody Two Shoes," and "Antmusic." His songs often featured prominent drum beats, catchy guitar riffs, and Adam Ant's charismatic vocal delivery. In addition to his musical career, Adam Ant is also known for his distinctive fashion sense, which often incorporated elements of pirate and military attire, as well as Native American influences. His bold and flamboyant style made him a fashion icon of the new wave era (like Boy George, but typically with far superior music, in my opinion).

Throughout his career, Adam Ant has experienced both critical acclaim and commercial success, with his song's drum beats being a huge part of his success. However, he also faced personal challenges, including struggles with mental health issues. Despite those challenges, he has continued to make music and perform, maintaining a dedicated fan base.

Other details about Adam Ant

Adam Ant remains an influential figure in the history of British music, known for his innovative sound, unique style, and impact on the new wave genre. Given his relatively ordinary origins, Adam Ant somewhat reflects the "Do It Yourself" principles commonly associated with punk rock , and, despite being assocoated primarily with new wave pop, the punk giants known as the Sex Pistols were among his key influences.

Friend or Foe (1982) reached number five on the UK Albums Chart and number 16 on the US Billboard Album Chart, and included the single "Goody Two Shoes." Though sometimes overlooked today, he had 10 UK top ten hits from 1980 to 1983, including three UK No. 1 singles. With new wave acts still going strong , they owe some of their success to Mr. Ant.

Also, maybe it's time to consider adding him (or Adam and the Ants) to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame .
