Winter is my favorite time to cruise in the Mediterranean. The crowds are less, the weather is not scorching hot, the atmosphere is more calm and relaxing. Don’t get me wrong, I also really enjoyed my Greek island cruise during the summer. It is just a very different experience.

A winter cruise in the Mediterranean is a completely different experience, though. While the weather is usually still milder than many places, it is definitely not a beach-y vacation. But if you want to see some amazing destinations, explore and are ok with it not being hot, you are in for a real treat.

10 Tips You Need To Know Before Your Mediterranean Winter Cruise

I recently was invited on a 8 day Eastern Mediterranean cruise by Celestyal Cruises and my husband and I had a wonderful time. They have an amazing sale going on with cruises starting at $339/person . Hurry up and see if you can snatch a deal. This was my first winter cruise and I have a few helpful tips for you next Mediterranean winter cruise that you need to know before you go:

Pack Layers & Pack Light

Leave your thick sweaters at home. They are bulky to pack, hard to wash, and heavy. They also can be uncomfortably hot when you are inside. And the Mediterranean countries do not get super cold, even in winter.

I highly recommend to pack layers instead. Bring clothes that you can mix and match with each other. I like to bring a few long-sleeve shirts or blouses, a few tank tops for colder days underneath, and a few cardigans in various warmths.

As a top layer, I bring this 3-in-1 jacket from Tommy Hilfiger . I love this jacket. So convenient and perfect for every occasion.

Woman dressed in white cardigan and white pants dancing on the beach

For travel pants, I like to bring 1-2 thin jeans, 1 pair of slacks and 1 pair of hiking/travel pants, and a few leggings. I can layer those under my other pants if it is really cold or wear with a longer tunic-style shirt.

For dressier occasions, I bring 1-2 nice tops to wear with slacks, a few fun scarfs, as well as a long-sleeve dress.

My husband brings a few undershirts, a few button-down shirts, and a few thin sweaters or cardigans to layer on top the button down shirts. He also brings 1-2 long-sleeve button downs, a sport coat, jeans and 1 pair of slacks as well as 1-2 ties.

Laundry is usually pretty cheap on cruises, so take advantage of that as well. We paid only 20 EUR for a large bag with next day delivery (~ 1 weeks worth of underwear and socks for 2 people, 8x shirts, 4x pants, 2x pajamas). This makes your suitcase easier to handle, and leaves more room for souvenirs.

While winter is technically off-season, most cruise companies reduce their number of sailings to accommodate for lesser demand. That means, even in the off-season, but especially if you are traveling during major holidays, the best cabins for winter Mediterranean cruises can book up quickly.

If you plan to travel during Thanksgiving week, Christmas break until the first week of January, I highly recommend to book a few months in advance. If you are more flexible and can travel during non-peak time, I would highly recommend it to avoid the biggest of crowds.

Find A Great Winter Cruise Itinerary

Picking a great itinerary is especially essential on a winter cruise in the Mediterranean. Cruising during that time is less about fun in the sun and beach time, but more about cultural and historic places.

Pick a cruise that takes you to places that have more to offer than beaches and snorkeling, such as great museums, castles, or palaces so you have some indoor alternatives in case the weather is not so great.

On our recent cruise in December, we visited 3 continents: Egypt, Israel, Cyprus, Rhodes, and Turkey. While we were lucky with the weather in each of our destinations, we spent quite a bit of time inside. And remember to pack a good raincoat in case you do experience some not so great weather.

Know What To Expect From A Winter Cruise

Yes, the winter in the Mediterranean is milder than in most places. Freezing temperatures are rare, but they do happen. So does rain and the occasional gloomy day. So if you are looking for HOT weather and beach time, snorkeling excursions and sunbathing, a Mediterranean winter cruise might not be the right thing for you.

However, if you prefer milder, spring-like temperatures, fewer crowds, and a romantic walk on the beach makes you equally as happy as frolicking in the water for hours, a winter cruise might be just the right choice for you.

Prepare For Rougher Seas

As the weather is colder during the winter months, the sea can also be a bit rougher than in the summer. We had two rough nights at sea, where we sailed across the open water of the Mediterranean. While it wasn’t dangerous in any way, the waves were very noticeable and strong enough that some of our belongings rolled off our table and shelves. Our ship, the Celestyal Crystal , had stabilizers which made it a lot smoother though.

If you have even the slightest notion to get seasick, I highly recommend to bring your medication along and take it, if need be.

Plan Your Shore Excursions Carefully

Do some research about the weather at the ports on your itinerary before you sign up for any excursions. Also check if there are any alternatives offered, if the weather is bad and if you can get a refund for bad weather or if it is considered “an act of god”.

If you do decide to sign up for an activity that takes place mostly outdoors, make sure that you bring some appropriate clothing. I always say: “There is no bad weather, only bad clothing mixed with a bad attitude.” If you can stay warm, dry and have a positive attitude, you can still have tons of fun, even if the weather is not so great.

Pay Attention To Time In Port

Depending on the cruise line, you have more or less hours in port. Make sure that those hours in port are taking advantage of the most daylight hours. During the winter, it can get dark quite early, so make sure you pick an itinerary that offers you the most daylight hours in port.

This was one of the reasons why I really fell in love with Celestyal Cruises . They have some of the longest times in port I have ever seen on any cruise line. In Egypt, we had 15+ hours of shore time. Some of their cruise stops in Greece even offer overnight stays in some ports (Mykonos), so you can watch the sunset from land and take advantage of the local nightlife.

Helpful Things You Should Pack

  • Rain coat (I already mentioned my favorite one above!)
  • A waterproof bag or a few ziplock bags to keep things like your camera or passports dry in your purse/backpack.
  • Books/ Kindle to keep you occupied during sea days and not so great weather.
  • Travel Towel for your backpack/purse – just in case you get caught in a downpour.
  • The right attitude to make the best out of your trip.

Check If Kids Clubs & Other Amenities Are Open

During winter cruises, some of the amenities on the ship might not be open due to low demand. For example, not all bars might be staffed at all hours, or the kids club might be closed during non-school holiday sailings. Make sure to check ahead, if you plan to use specific amenities during your winter cruise.

Holiday Cruising

If you are cruising during the winter Holidays, I not only recommend to book early, but also a few other things. When you are away from your home, family, and friends for the Holidays, you might want to bring along a little something to remind you of them.

Our cruise ship was beautifully decorated for the Holidays. There were Christmas trees and Gingerbread houses everywhere. We sailed during the first half of December, but if I were to sail during the Holidays directly, I would bring 1-2 of my favorite Christmas decorations from home to put up that remind me of home. I also would have a scheduled Face-Time call to connect with my loved ones at home and wish them Happy Holidays. Maybe there is a way you can bring your favorite Holiday tradition with you on your cruise?

Gingerbread houses and Holiday Decoration on the Celestyal Crystal in December - Mediterranean Winter Cruise

Also keep in mind that people like to dress up more festively during the Holidays, so maybe bring 1-2 more dressy outfits for your dinners and Holiday parties. Maybe you even have a special Holiday-themed outfit you want to bring for some photos?

Don’t forget the presents – if your traveling companions do that kind of thing. However, I think a Holiday cruise might be the perfect occasion to focus on giving experiences rather than things. That way, you don’t have to worry about packing, wrapping, and breaking your gifts and can rather make some amazing memories together.

A Mediterranean winter cruise is a unique experience, but certainly a lot of fun. I actually prefer cruising in the winter, because I don’t like HOT weather and prefer to visit places when they are not as crowded.

To book this winter cruise I mentioned above, just go to the  Celestyal Cruise website  and read more details about sailing dates, cabins and of course to go through the booking process.

A big thank you again for the team from Celestyal who invited us on this cruise around the Eastern Mediterranean in December and made this trip possible. Thank you Chuck, Marios, and Frosso for taking such great care of us.

Best Winter Cruise Destinations: Cold Weather and Winter Sun Cruises

I absolutely love a cruise. I love them for many reasons but one thing I especially like is that they are a year round holiday as cruises move to position themselves for the best weather. In this guide we round up the best winter cruise destinations to help you find your perfect winter sun escape.

Table of Contents

Best Winter Cruise destinations

Note about this best winter cruise destinations guide : This guide is written with the Northern Hemisphere Winter in mind.

If you are looking to do your first cruise these tips will be helpful from booking to disembarkation!

Where to Cruise During Winter for Sun

If you are wondering “Where can you cruise in the Winter?” the answer is that are lot of places are nor only accessible by cruise in Winter but are actually better visiting during Northern Hemisphere Winter than Summer. In our option the best winter cruise destinations for sun are:

Australia

Cruise Ship in Sydney Port - one of the best Winter Cruise Destinations - the answer to where to cruise during Winter

Australia is one of the best winter cruise destinations in my opinion. It offers a great blend of ports from beautiful beaches to bustling cities.

If you take a cruise directly  from Sydney you will be rewarded with one of the most beautiful sailaways in the world as the main Sydney cruise port is in the centre of the city at Circular Quay and sails past both the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Top Tip : If you can get a room on the port side of the ship you will get the best views.

From Sydney you have option to go South to Melbourne, Tasmania and New Zealand (see below for more on New Zealand cruises) or Alternatively you could look at getting a cruise that heads north towards the Great Barrier Reef, New Caledonia and the tropics of the Northern Territory.  Taking a cruise in Australia between December and March will reward you with perfect snorkelling weather to explore one of the best natural habitats on earth.

South Pacific Cruise

What to wear in Bora Bora Packing List

The South Pacific is a bucket list destination for many people but it comes with a hefty price tag especially if you want to experience the overwater bungalows. A cost effective way of seeing the beautiful islands of the South Pacific is to take a cruise.

In some ways cruising to the South Pacific is a great idea as it takes the stress out of travelling between islands and you can to sample a number of islands on the same trip. For instance you can visit Tahiti, Bora Bora and Moorea  in French Polynesia all on the same cruise, whilst also ticking off tropical paradises like Samoa and Tonga along the way. You won’t get the overwater bungalow experience but you will get to sample more of the islands and experience the epic scale of the south Pacific ocean.

For more information and South Pacific cruise tips check out this post!

Please note : South Pacific cruises during the Northern Hemisphere Winter occur during the French Polynesia rainy season. You may experience some rain during these months but it is a tropical island after all and the rain is usually short and warm. For more information on Tahiti click here!

New Zealand Cruise

Cruise ship in port - tips for cruising while pregnant - babymoon cruise

If you aren’t bothered about 100% Winter sun but want a great winter cruise destination you should consider New Zealand. The New Zealand weather is extremely temperamental and the best comparison I can think of is taking a summer holiday in Scotland – chances are you are going to see rain but that won’t matter when you see the amazing scenery on offer.

I recommend taking in both a North and South Island Cruise if you can as each island offers something unique. If you like amazing scenery, outdoors pursuits, wine and beautiful cities then a New Zealand cruise might be the best winter cruise destination for you.

Caribbean Cruise

Tips for Cruising While Pregnant - How to Take a Babymoon Cruise (People in sea infant of cruise ship)

If you are wanting Winter sun then the best winter cruise destination I can think of is the Carribbean which pretty much has year round perfect weather. It really doesn’t matter whether you decide to go on a cruise in November, December or January the Caribbean will be great whatever winter month you travel in.

The first Caribbean cruise we took sailed from New York. It is bizarre sailing away from a city covered in snow and arriving in a tropical paradise a couple of days later.

Note: Cruises make a great Winter babymoon but if you are cruising pregnant or are thinking about getting pregnant you should look for Zika-free Caribbean beach destinations when planning which cruise you should take.

Canary Islands Cruise

La Gomera - Canary Island Cruise - why this is the best winter cruise destination

In Europe for me there is one main choice for taking a winter cruise and that is the Canary Islands, an archipelago sitting a few hundred miles off the west coast of Africa which is part of Spain and by extension in the EU Schengen zone. If you like volcanoes and black sand beaches then the Canary Islands are for you. There are seven islands in the Canary Islands they are

  • Tenerife
  • Lanzarote
  • Fuerteventura
  • Gran Canaria
  • La Gomera
  • La Palma
  • El Hierro

Like Hawaii and other volcanic archipelagos the islands of the Canaries vary in age and microclimate meaning tropical alive volcanoes leading to flattening arid deserts as you move from west to east toward the African continent. a cruise is a great way to experience several of these quite geographical spread islands on one trip.

Madeira – the best New Years Eve Cruise Destination

Maderia is another great Winter cruise destination and if you are planning on doing a cruise over New Years Eve I would strongly recommend looking at doing a cruise where Madeira is one of the ports of call as Madeira has some of the best New Years Eve fireworks in the world. Some years there are as many nine cruise ships docked in Funchal on New Years Eve specifically there to watch the fireworks. I can’t think of a much better place to ring in the New Year than watching the fireworks at Funchal from my cruise ship balcony room .

Middle East Cruise

The beautiful Doha skyline

Having being a long time Middle East resident both in Qatar and in Abu Dhabi I can tell you that the Middle East has the perfect Winter weather. Temperatures in the Gulf states in Winter tend to stay around the 20 degree mark making it much more pleasant to visit than during the summer months when it can top 50c.

You will also get to tick quite a few countries off your bucket list on your Middle East cruise as many will visit the UAE , Qatar and Oman at least with many others adding Bahrain as a stop.

Again if you are looking at the best place to cruise over New Years Eve you might want to consider a ship that docks in Dubai overnight on New Years Eve as this is another place that does New Year fireworks brilliantly.

Southeast Asia Cruise

Southeast Asia is another great cruise to take in Winter and another that will tick many big ticket items off your bucket list. Many of the South East Asia cruises stop at Cambodia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and some go as far as Indonesia. Winter is the perfect time to visit these places as in Summer the heat and humidity are much higher.

Galapagos Island Cruise

I unfortunately haven’t done this one but my husband did before I met him. He swears that his best ever New Year’s Eve was celebrating on board a Galapagos cruise. If you love wildlife but still want good weather then a Winter Galapagos cruise could be perfect for you.

Where can you cruise in the winter if you aren’t bothered about sunshine?

Antartica cruise .

One of the items on my bucket list is to visit all the continents including Antartica and one of the easiest ways of doing this is to take a cruise. The time that taking an Antartica cruise is possible is a relatively short window. An Antartica Cruise is best taken between November and March.

Taking an Antartica Cruise in December or January will mean you will get about 20 hours of sunlight and a wealth of wildlife to spot including whales, seal pups and penguin chicks.

Of all the Winter Cruise Destinations I’ve found this is the itinerary I am most desperate to go on.

Christmas Market River Cruise – the best cruise to take in December?

Best Winter Cruise Destinations - Christmas Market in Germany

I’ll be honest I have never done a river cruise but my mother in law makes an annual pilgrimage to do a Winter Christmas market river cruise. If you want to get in the Christmas spirit and looking for the best cruise to take in December then this might be the perfect solution for you. Just remember to pack layers and an umbrella!

For a complete cruise packing list click here!

Norway Northern Lights Cruise

Not many cruise lines offer this itinerary but you could join a Hurtigruten Cruise and head to Norway and the Artic Circle. It is definitely going to be cold but you stand a pretty good chance of seeing the Northern Lights which in my opinion is worth the cold weather.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cruising During Winter

Where is the best place to go on a cruise in november.

The best place to go on a cruise in November is probably the Caribbean. You can find some great deals and the weather is pretty consistent.

Where is the best place to go on a cruise in December?

Anywhere on the above list is good to go on a cruise in December. However if you want to get in the festive spirit I would recommend a Christmas Market Cruise or a Cruise to Sydney, Dubai or Madeira if you love celebrating New Years Eve.

What is the cheapest month to go on a cruise? Are cruises cheaper in the winter?

If you are looking for the cheapest month to go on a cruise this will definitely depend on the destination as some places are peak season during the Northern Hemisphere summer. The best value winter cruise destination for me is the Caribbean mainly due to the quantity of ships in the area and number of embarkation ports.

Is December or January a good month to take a cruise?

December and January are great months to take a cruise so long as you pick the destination right.

Are cruises fun in the winter?

I think cruises in Winter are great fun. With the exception of the Christmas and New Year cruises you may find the crowds smaller and have a slightly older demographic (certainly on Caribbean itineraries). We went on a mid January Caribbean cruise and we were the youngest passengers by a long way. This didn’t bother us but if you want more of a party ship you might want to factor this in.

Our Favorite Destinations for Winter Cruises This Year

By Zachary Laks

Phillip Island Australia

Swapping blizzards for trade winds, winter cruises can be the tonic to your seasonal downswing. Not unlike birds, cruise ships head south for the winter, chasing the sun, sand, and appeal of tropical paradise. Though with an increase in expedition travel, shifting routes are leveraging the winter months as prime time for glacial destinations, from the northern lights to Antarctica. If you’re going to travel to the ends of the earth, 2019 was the year ships stepped up to take you there in luxury and style. This past year alone saw 10 new expedition builds hit the seas, including the ultra luxury flair of Scenic Eclipse , complete with two helicopters and a seven-person submarine, and Hurtigruten's Roald Amundsen , the industry's first hybrid ship powered by LNG and electric battery. Whether the destination is a remote island or an iceberg, these winter cruises are your best bet for the season.

Caribbean

The Caribbean

From Boston to Miami , ports swell throughout the winter months with ships headed south to the Caribbean. This season’s mega-ships joining the fray include Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas , the world’s largest cruise ship; Norwegian’s newest and largest ship, Norwegian Encore , and the design-forward Celebrity Edge . Narrowly avoiding extensive damage from Hurricane Dorian , the cruise-favorite ports of The Bahamas are all back and operating at full capacity. As for determining what Caribbean itinerary is best for you, the cruise line and ship should take top priority. There’s not too much variation in beach quality at destinations along the eastern and western Caribbean routes, and nearly all islands offer comparable thrills such as zip-lining, scuba diving, and liquor tastings.

Private cruise line island stops help distinguish Caribbean itineraries, where well-kept beaches are steps from the ship and the shore-side BBQ lunches are included. New this year, Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day CocoCay enhances the private island experience. The Bahamas-based outpost features an expansive water park featuring North America’s tallest water slide, a helium balloon that takes adventurers 450 feet high, and floating cabanas available to rent for the day.

For smaller ships, Viking has three of its sister ships traversing the Caribbean this winter , sailing seven to 21 nights from Miami, San Juan, and New York. Silversea continues its annual Caribbean winter itineraries spanning five to 24 days, with highlights that include swimming with the pigs of Exuma Island, a day in the remote Mayreau Island with a population of 200, and the remarkable 365 beaches at Falmouth, Antigua, and Barbuda.

Antarctica

Topping the bucket list as the final frontier for the world’s most avid travelers, Antarctica has never been more accessible, as a surge in expedition cruising has chartered new ways south. Only a select few vessels in the world are outfitted with ice-strengthened hulls strong enough to forge through the waters and iceberg-flanked passageways of the sprawling continent. The range in cruises spans small, expedition-focused ships that can accommodate 50-100 passengers to larger, 200-passenger five-star vessels. Voyages originate predominantly from Argentina’s Buenos Aires and Ushuaia before crossing the choppy seas of the Drake Passage, where whales can often be spotted frolicking in a ship’s wake. Temperatures on the Antarctic Peninsula (where most cruise ships frequent) are warmest December through February, with averages in the 30s. Nearly 24 hours of daylight makes up for the climate, with endless hours of sightseeing and sporadic excursions from the ship by way of guided Zodiac boats and kayaks.

On trend is the new fly-cruise experience, optimizing your time cruising the Antarctic coast by flying over the trying swells of the Drake Passage, normally a two-day trip by sea completed in two hours by plane. Having launched just last month, Antarctica21's Magellan Explorer is the region’s newest ship purpose-built for the operation of Antarctic fly and cruise expeditions. If you prefer your white ice caps with white glove service, Silversea’s newly announced Antarctica Bridge will be the first to bring an ultra-luxury touch to the fly-cruise experience. An all-business class private charter jet will transport passengers from Punta Arenas, Chile to the Silver Explorer , ready to cruise through the remote paradise (slated for its first expedition December 2021).

Bagan Myanmar

Southeast Asia

Ocean and river cruises continue to expand their routes throughout Southeast Asia, with ports in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore showing significant growth in cruise traffic this past year. Avoiding the heat of the summer, most cruise lines focus their itineraries on the region in the fall and winter months. Singapore is a major hub for ocean liners as well as a popular stopover for smaller ships passing through. The island city-state is a seasonal home to Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas from October through April, sailing mostly four- to five-day trips north to Malaysia and Thailand; Princess Cruises’ Sapphire Princess from December through February sailing a wide variety of Southeast Asia itineraries; and Costa Cruises’ Costa Fortuna , which does primarily week-long tours of Malaysia and Thailand.

River cruises are most predominantly found on the Mekong in Vietnam and Myanmar’s Irrawaddy river . Viking Mekong has a seven-day Mekong river tour that shifts from a northbound to southbound river expedition weekly, with the most temperate weather found in the low 70s from December through March. December and January are best for Myanmar’s river cruises as it’s one of the sunniest and driest times of the year, with temperatures along the river banks averaging from 75 degrees in Mandalay to 80 degrees in Bagan. Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours’ year-round Bagan and Mandalay river cruise on the Scenic Aura adds the comforts of luxury as you explore one of the world’s most remote destinations.

Phillip Island Australia

The most popular port in Australia is the coveted Sydney Harbour, home to the iconic Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. January and February are the warmest months to head down under, averaging temperate 72-degree days with an average of nine hours of sunshine. Royal Caribbean has invested heavily in the market, steering four ships with more than 80 sailings throughout their 20/21 season. Ovation of the Seas returns for its fifth winter homeport in Sydney with two- to 19-night itineraries that include the South Pacific. Opting for a more intimate and luxurious cruise of the Tasman Sea, Seabourn Encore ferries passengers one way between Sydney and Auckland on a 14- to 16-day New Zealand & Australia itinerary from December through March. (One warning: Come prepared with layers and rain gear, as it’s not uncommon to experience a swell of weather patterns in a matter of hours.)

As elusive as they can be magical, the Northern Lights are the primary drive for opting to coast along the frigid waters of Norway in the winter months. Drastically dropping below zero as you near the Arctic Circle, temperatures will rarely peak above 20 degrees. Add in an average of five to six hours of daylight (or even less in the Arctic Circle as polar nights bring days without the sun). But the discomfort is tamed by the majesty of a Northern Lights sighting. Among the most dependable guides to the region, Hurtigruten’s Norwegian-owned and operated history with the coast dates to 1893. Predominantly known as a ferry line that shuttles locals, Hurtigruten welcomes expedition travelers on no-frills Northern Lights tours. The 12-day sailings run October through February. With their experience and northernmost-reaching itineraries, they’re so confident you’ll glimpse the Northern Lights during this time that if you don’t, they offer compensation by way of a six- or seven-day cruise free of charge. Of the larger lines, British-based P&O Cruises offers only one to two itineraries each year in search of the phenomenon, while Royal Caribbean offers a single itinerary that reaches the Arctic Circle this year on Jewel of the Seas . Select smaller lines that traverse the Arctic Circle with a little more regularity during the wintery months include Cruise & Maritime Voyages, Saga Cruises and Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines.

NCL Cruise Line Pride of America Na Pali Coast Kauai Hawaii

Regulations prohibit foreign-flagged ships (a.k.a. nearly all major cruise lines) to sail a U.S.-based itinerary without stopping at one foreign port. Cruise lines have skirted around this issue by creating Hawaiian voyages that originate in Vancouver , make a pit stop in Ensenada, Mexico on the way to Honolulu , or make Hawaii a destination on a transpacific crossing. Hawaii’s winter temperatures average in the high 70s and cruises that sail the island waters January through March are timed for a chance encounter with humpback whales . Norwegian Cruise Line currently operates seven- to 14-day itineraries roving the Hawaiian islands and making its way to the South Pacific in the spring. Go for the seven-night “greatest hits” cruise that hits up ports including Maui, Kona, and Kauai. If you’re looking to sail from the mainland, Princess Cruises’ Star Princess and Grand Princess feature round-trip 15-day itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Vancouver .

Silversea Galapagos

Galápagos Islands

Cruises are the most practical and immersive way to experience the natural wonder of this archipelago of volcanic islands, which straddles the equator in the Pacific Ocean. Smaller, intimate ships sail uniform routes approved by Galápagos National Park . December through March marks the high season on the islands, as the temperatures average in the upper 70s and low 80s, and endemic species enter into breeding and nesting season. Choosing a Galápagos cruise comes down to what kind of adventure you want, and what standard of luxury you’re seeking. Sailing its inaugural winter season, Celebrity Flora has arrived in the islands as one of the most high-tech and luxurious ships to navigate the islands in years. The 100 passenger ship is sailing 10- to 16-night itineraries. Silversea’s Silver Galápagos seven-day trek continues its all-inclusive sailings as capacity demands lead to the line’s expansion with Silver Origin , set to debut summer 2020. For a more intimate and eco-conscious expedition , Ecoventura sails luxury yachts with capacity for only 20 passengers on 7-night itineraries.

Austrias Schlögener Schlinge Horseshoe Bend AmaMagna

Prioritizing the romanticism of strolling Piazza San Marco in Venice with room to breathe over a beach is a real consideration—especially as European cruise ports continue to manage overcrowding issues in the high season. Cruising Europe in the winter months adds a convenience factor that’s hard to find any other time of the year, as restaurants welcome you in off the street, winding lines for top museums and attractions are almost non-existent, and bargaining at the deserted markets is in your favor. The Christmas market river cruises are among the most popular of the season, alighting at each frankincense-filled pop-up along the Rhine and Danube rivers. It’s important to note for ocean cruises that the seas can be rough, especially the Bay of Biscay. Weather conditions can often lead to last-minute itinerary changes and canceled excursions. Also, some of the port highlights use the slow season to close for break or refurbishment. Plan ahead and come prepared with a few options for each port.

Among the new ships making their way through Europe this winter season, AmaWaterways' 196-passenger AmaMagna is turning heads as the first-of-its-kind, extra-wide river ship. The ship is nearly twice the width of standard riverboats, increasing capacity but also adding more interior space for dining venues, a heated pool, and a water sports platform from the back of the ship. The ship will roam the Danube year-round, including an annual November and December Christmas Markets on the Danube tour .

Antarctic Cruises

Having worked in Antarctica , we know all too well the continent’s appeal. These days the world’s most remote place is more accessible than ever.

The 7th Continent; a dream destination, and the ultimate winter cruise destination. It may be the most remote place on earth, but Antarctica is loaded with unique wildlife and breathtaking beauty.

Cruising is the most common way to access Antarctica. Many will opt for the two – three-week cruises that depart from Punta Arenas, Chile.

Antarctic Cruise Itinerary and Destinations

Cruising through the Chilean Fjords before rounding Cape Horn and on to the Antarctic Peninsula, you can tick off some pretty big-ticket cruise destinations.

After spending time in Antarctica, some cruise itineraries will head north to the Falkland Islands before docking in Montevideo, Uruguay for disembarkation.

Antarctic Cruise Highlights

The highlight of this adventure cruise is, without a doubt the time spent in Antarctica. Watching penguin colonies onshore while fur and elephant seals jostle for prime position.

And then, the spectre of the Antarctic landscape continually reinforces – The cost of a trip to Antarctica is worthwhile and a once in a lifetime experience.

Zodiac rides through the Antarctic sea ice, to realise how small we really are.

For many checking off the 7th continent holds the greatest appeal but zodiac cruising around icebergs and kayaking in Antarctic waters will leave you spellbound.

Breaking the thin layer of ice on top of the ocean with your kayak while penguins dart about, we are reminded how small we are in the natural world.

Antarctica is cold, but with the proper gear, not unbearable. Cruise companies will supply appropriate boots and polar jackets that are rarely required on a calm sunny day, providing you have adequate under layers.

Essential Clothing for Polar Cruises

Baselayers are so crucial for keeping you warm in polar climates. Merino wool is the best option. The fabric needs to be close to your skin, so it needs to wick moisture away, such as sweat when you are active but also keep you warm when you cool down. Merino is also great for wash and wear as it is quick-drying.

There are some great designs around now that don’t have to be worn strictly as “underwear”. Some base layer tops are fashionable enough to be worn around the ship without having to change every time you head outside.

One good set of merino baselayers will see you through an entire cruise without issue.

Cost of an Antarctic Cruise

There is no doubt an Antarctic cruise is going to be expensive. Expect anywhere upwards of $6,000 USD for a lower end cruise.

As the market expands, the opportunity to snag some excellent last minute deals are increasing. Deals of up to 50% off are possible if you are flexible.

If you have ever wondered about voyaging to Antarctica, anyone who has been will say – save your pennies and go; you won’t regret it. Antarctica is a once in a lifetime experience.

Sunset over Halong Bay is beautiful on a winter cruise

Winter may not be the best time for swimming, but it is for scenic landscapes and beautiful photographs.

With the cold weather comes overcast skies, light drizzles and often thick fog. It is these conditions that give Ha Long Bay the aura of mystery and dramatic scenes often seen in promotional photographs.

Cruises to Ha Long Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay depart from Ha Long city and usually take either two days with one night on the boat or three days sometimes with one night spent on the ship, and one at an island hotel.

Mist falls over Halong Bay in winter creating a mysterious landscape with boats anchored in Halong Bay.

Ah, the first-timers trip to Rome; early July and temperatures hovering in the high 80s. Each day spent jostling with crowds of fellow tourists at the Colosseum and St. Peter’s Basilica make the city feel even hotter. After a few years of European summer vacations under our belt, we’ve learned the joys of traveling to Europe during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall), which come with shorter lines and milder temperatures—and on a recent visit, we discovered that winter (Europe’s off-season) might just be the best time of all.

Why Visit Europe in the Winter Off-Season?

couple on bench in europe looking over mountain and lake

At first, the thought of visiting Europe in winter might not sound so enticing: You’ll find chilly temperatures, fewer hours of daylight, and many attractions closed for the season. (You’ll also probably want to buy travel insurance in case you encounter snow- or ice-related airport delays.) But there are some major advantages to visiting Europe in winter that could make up for these drawbacks.

1. Smaller Crowds

The time of year you travel can mean the difference between standing in a two-hour line and having an incredible historical monument nearly to yourself. While many European cities are popular year-round, traveling during the winter will help you avoid the worst of the crowds, which can reach truly epic proportions in July and August.

2. Lower Fares (and Less Crowded Planes)

On a recent flight to Barcelona in December, one SmarterTravel editor found herself in a row of four seats alone with her travel partner. And while we can’t guarantee such good luck on every winter flight, the odds are better than they are during the summer high season.

The lower demand for winter flights to Europe means not only a chance of an undersold plane but also lower fares. According to Co-Founder and Chief Flight Expert Scott Keyes of Scott’s Cheap Flights : “The difference between dead-of-winter fares and peak-summer fares isn’t a few bucks; it’s the difference between a hamburger and filet mignon. Whereas flights in January or February to Europe regularly drop as low as $250 roundtrip out of major U.S. airports, July and August flights are normally well over $1,000, especially if you didn’t book months in advance. I would expect summer fares to be priced at least 300 percent higher than the best winter fares, depending on routing and how far in advance you book.”

Airfare analyst Peter Thornton of SmarterTravel’s sister site, Airfarewatchdog , says: “Flights will be cheapest to destinations where there is competition from budget carriers like Norwegian and Level. Places like Madrid, Barcelona, London, Paris, and Amsterdam.” Thornton also advises that while percentage differences vary by route, flash sales during the winter off-season can be more than 50 percent cheaper than many routes in the summer. Other cities in Europe in winter that will have cheaper airfare include those that are major hub cities for airline alliances, like Frankfurt, Munich, Helsinki, Zurich, as well as the cities already mentioned.

3. Lower Hotel Rates

Flights aside, you’ll also save money on winter hotels in Europe—and likely have more choice. The most popular spots to stay (including both hotels and vacation rentals ) tend to sell out early over the summer months, but in the winter you’ll have more options at better prices. Winter is also an ideal time to do a home exchange and save even more on accommodations (read more about that process, here ).

4. Mild Weather

This one varies depending on where you go, of course; if you’re looking for temperate climates, you’ll want to avoid cities such as Oslo (where the average winter temperature is 33 degrees Fahrenheit) or Moscow (a brisk 25 degrees). But you might be surprised by how pleasant it is to take a winter wander through cities like Barcelona, Athens, or Lisbon, where average winter temperatures are in the high 50s. Pack a light jacket and enjoy not having to sweat through your entire European vacation. Read more about what to pack for Europe here .

Where to Go in Europe in Winter

castle with dusting of snow

Depending on what you’re looking to do in Europe in the off-season, you’ll want to decide on a general area of the continent. For those looking to see the northern lights or ski, Scandanavia or the Alps would be the place to go; for milder temperatures head to southern Europe or the United Kingdom. You can’t really go wrong, but here are standout destinations for Europe in the winter off-season.

What to do in europe in winter.

group of people viewing the northern lights in norway

Every European destination has something that makes it stand out in winter, but here are two things you can only do in Europe in the off-season.

Northern Lights

Take advantage of those long winter nights by seeing one of the world’s most remarkable natural phenomena: the northern lights. You can check this off your bucket list in the northern reaches of Norway, Sweden, and Finland. One cool option: At Kakslauttanen , an Arctic resort in Finnish Lapland, you can sleep in a glass igloo and watch for the aurora borealis without even getting out of bed!

Check Prices for Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort in Saariselka

More easily accessible spots for northern lights viewing include Iceland and Scotland. (Icelandair offers free stopovers in Reykjavik if you want to combine a trip to Iceland with a visit to the continent.) Wherever you go, choose a clear night and venture outside the main cities to seek dark skies in remote areas.

Christmas Markets and Holiday Cheer

We’re cheating a little bit with this one, as the weeks leading up to Christmas are technically still part of autumn. But you’ll feel the winter spirit as you sip warm spiced wine, munch on gingerbread, and browse handcrafted holiday ornaments at Christmas markets across the continent. The most traditional markets are located in Germany, Austria, and parts of Italy and France. (Here are a few of our favorite European Christmas markets .) And of course, you can’t beat the holiday shopping and spirit in England.

Aside from the markets, many cities are at their most charming in December, with white lights twinkling from every lamppost and enchanting holiday displays in every shop window.

Cruise the Med

According to our sister site, Cruise Critic , some ships stay in the Mediterranean over winter and booking a cruise during this time can be a great way to save on a dream trip to Europe. If that’s not your thing, consider a cruise that stops in Spain’s Canary Islands … while it won’t be beach weather, it’ll most certainly be milder than at home.

Preparing for Your Cruise

The thrill of an upcoming cruise is unmatched, but a smooth sailing experience requires thoughtful preparation.

From documentation to packing and pre-booking excursions, here’s a roadmap to ensure you’re fully geared up for your January cruise.

Necessary Documentation and Visas

Passports: Always ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your return date. Some countries might deny entry if this requirement isn’t met.

Visas: Depending on your nationality and the countries your cruise will dock in, you may need visas. Some cruise lines can facilitate ‘group visas’ for certain ports, but it’s crucial to verify in advance.

Boarding Pass and Cruise Documents: Print out any necessary boarding passes, cruise tickets, or reservation confirmations. Many cruise lines also offer e-documents via their mobile apps.

Health and Travel Insurance Considerations

Travel Insurance: This is a must. Ensure it covers cruise-specific scenarios, including trip cancellations, medical emergencies onboard or at foreign ports, and emergency evacuations.

Vaccinations: Some destinations may require specific vaccinations. Consult your doctor or a travel clinic to ensure you’re up-to-date.

Medications: Pack necessary medications in their original containers, preferably in your carry-on. It’s also wise to bring a copy of your prescriptions.

packing traveling tips

Tips for a Smooth Embarkation Process

Arrival Time: While it’s tempting to arrive early, adhere to the check-in time given by the cruise line to avoid overcrowding at the terminal.

Luggage Tags: Most cruise lines provide tags to attach to your luggage. Fill these out in advance to expedite the baggage delivery process to your stateroom.

Carry-On Bag: It might take a few hours for your luggage to reach your room. Pack a carry-on with essentials like medications, a change of clothes, swimwear (if you’re planning to hit the pool immediately), and important documents.

Dress Appropriately: Sometimes, there’s a gap between boarding the ship and accessing your cabin. Dress comfortably, considering the climate of your embarkation port.

Online Check-in: Many cruise lines offer online check-in facilities, allowing you to input necessary information and even upload a security photo. This can save considerable time during the embarkation process.

Pre-booking to Enhance Your Experience

Shore Excursions: Popular excursions can sell out quickly. If there’s an activity you’re particularly excited about, book it in advance through the cruise line or reputable third-party operators.

Onboard Activities: Some cruise lines allow you to pre-book shows, specialty dining, or spa treatments before you set sail.

Beverage and Dining Packages: If you plan to indulge in drinks or specialty dining, consider purchasing a package in advance. It often works out cheaper than paying for items individually onboard.

Special Needs and Requests

If you have dietary restrictions, mobility issues, or any other special requests, inform the cruise line well in advance. They’re typically accommodating, but early notification ensures they can cater to your needs effectively.

In the exhilaration of an upcoming cruise, meticulous preparation can sometimes take a backseat.

However, with a well-laid-out plan, not only will you ensure a seamless embarkation and sailing experience, but you’ll also be poised to make the most of every moment onboard and ashore.

Things to Watch Out For

Things to Watch Out For

January cruises can be an exciting and enjoyable way to beat the winter blues while exploring stunning destinations. However, there are some unique considerations and potential challenges that come with cruising in January.

From weather concerns to packing tips and itinerary choices, here are several things to watch out for when planning and embarking on a January cruise.

1. Weather and Climate Variability:

January brings a range of weather conditions depending on your cruise destination. While some travelers opt for warm-weather cruises to the Caribbean or Hawaii to escape the winter cold, others may choose cruises to colder regions like Alaska or the Baltic.

Be sure to research your destination’s climate and pack accordingly. In warmer destinations, bring sunscreen and light clothing, while in colder climates, pack layers and cold-weather gear.

2. Packing for All Occasions:

Since January weather can be unpredictable, packing for a January cruise can be a bit more challenging than a summer one.

To prepare for varying temperatures, pack a mix of clothing options, including swimwear, warm jackets, and comfortable shoes. Also, don’t forget essentials like a rain jacket, an umbrella, and gloves, just in case.

3. Potential for Rough Seas:

January is known for experiencing rough seas in certain regions due to winter storms. If you’re prone to motion sickness, be sure to pack motion sickness remedies like wristbands, medications, or patches. Booking a cabin in the middle of the ship or on a lower deck can also help minimize the feeling of motion.

4. Crowds and Peak Season Prices:

January is a popular time for cruising, especially during holidays like New Year’s and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This means that cruise ships can be crowded, and prices may be higher. To avoid excessive crowds, consider booking your cruise for mid-January, after the holiday rush has subsided.

Things to Watch Out For

5. Special Events and Themed Cruises:

Many cruise lines offer special themed cruises in January, such as music festivals or wellness retreats.

While these can be a great way to enhance your cruise experience, they can also affect the atmosphere onboard. Be sure to research the cruise’s theme and schedule to ensure it aligns with your interests and preferences.

6. Flight Delays and Weather Disruptions:

If you need to fly to your cruise departure port, keep in mind that January is notorious for flight delays and cancellations due to winter weather.

To minimize the risk, book your flights well in advance, consider arriving a day or two before your cruise departs, and purchase travel insurance to cover any unexpected disruptions.

7. Limited Port Accessibility:

Some cruise destinations may have limited accessibility in January due to adverse weather conditions or seasonal closures.

Research the ports of call on your itinerary and be prepared for the possibility of itinerary changes or missed ports. Having a flexible attitude can help you make the most of your cruise, even if adjustments are necessary.

8. Health and Safety Concerns:

Given the potential for illness outbreaks during the winter months, it’s essential to practice good hygiene and follow cruise line health guidelines.

Wash your hands frequently, use hand sanitizers provided onboard, and consider getting a flu shot before your trip to protect yourself and your fellow passengers.

9. Early Sunsets:

In many regions, January means shorter daylight hours. This can affect your shore excursions and outdoor activities. Plan your activities accordingly and be aware that you might not have as much daylight for exploration as you would during other times of the year.

10. New Year’s Resolutions:

January is often seen as a time for fresh starts and resolutions. While it’s wonderful to use your cruise as a way to kickstart a healthier lifestyle, remember to balance it with indulgence and relaxation. After all, you’re on vacation!

January cruises present an exciting opportunity to embark on an unforgettable voyage during the heart of winter.

While they come with unique challenges like weather variability, potential crowds, and health considerations, careful planning and flexibility can help ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey.

How to visit the Norway fjords in winter (2023 guide)

View of the snowy Norway fjords

Are you dreaming of the Norway fjords in winter? As far as winter destinations go, this postcard-perfect part of the Nordics boasts epic winter activities, charming villages and fascinating history. Here’s a travel guide with all you need to know about visiting the epic fjords in Norway in the winter months!

Snow-covered fir trees lined the dark road as we ploughed through the darkness, en route from Sogndal airport to Fjaerland, a small fjordside village some 40 minutes away.

The sun had set long before, but the moonlight bounced off the snow as our driver skilfully drove us over fjords and into the countryside.

The windows were brightly lit at the Fjaerland Fjordstove Hotel, a beacon in an otherwise silent landscape, and our host stood at the door.

“Welcome to the Norwegian fjords”, she said cheerfully, “you can’t see it right now, but here we’re right on the edge of one! Just wait until sunrise”.

I was on a trip visiting some of Norway’s fjords in winter; to experience some of their cooler-season activities and discern what the destination has to offer in the cooler months. Discover more about them in this blog post!

This blog post contains affiliate links. I visited as a guest of Widerøe Airlines and Visit Fjord Norway. All opinions are my own.

Are the Norwegian fjords in winter worth visiting?

View over the snowy cliffs at a viewpoint near Flam

“Let’s cut to the chase – you can’t live here if you don’t like snow” Jarle, the owner of Fjaerland Guiding , told us the next morning. “Our lives in winter are entirely snow-based.

The fjords look completely different from November to March – as you can see, they’re totally covered by thick white snow”.

Most Norwegian fjord destinations will be at least a little snowy throughout the winter months – except for Bergen, which sees snow sometimes, but more often has temperatures above freezing.

Boats on a fjord in Norway

While the colder weather means that you’ll need to don a few extra layers, the bright white snow does nothing but enhance the landscape (and fjord tours run all winter round!), plus it brings a plethora of other attractions: skiing, snowshoeing and glacier chasing are always on the menu when visiting the Norway fjords in winter.

Kayaking or swimming in the fjords may seem less appealing during this season (although there are certainly people who still do both – the Norwegians are a hardy bunch), but the enticing snow-covered streets and cosy winter atmosphere are enough to draw even the most sceptical of travellers in.

Norway’s fjords aren’t necessarily better in winter, but they’re different to the summer months, and anyone who’s a fan of wintery landscapes and snowy activities should mark it as a must-visit travel experience.

How to get to the Norwegian fjords in winter

We flew to the Norway fjords as a guest of Widerøe , a local airline that, using Bergen as its hub, connects 41 destinations in Norway (including many of its fjord towns and cities) with eight European destinations (including London and Aberdeen).

Widerøe connects Bergen to Sogndal by way of a small propellor plane; and uses a slightly larger vessel to carry passengers all the way up north, to Tromsø – the self-proclaimed “ capital of the Arctic ”.

All of its planes are in a 2×2 configuration – ideal for people who are travelling as a couple or group of two or four – and the airline offers free tea and coffee for flights of over 40 minutes and free entertainment (which you’ll need to use a smartphone to view).

However, one of the main drawbacks to visiting the Norwegian fjords in winter is that there can be delays.

Our plane from Bergen to Sogndal was delayed for around an hour due to the weather – and, according to some of our fellow (local) plane takers, there was a chance that the plane would have been taken to Oslo if the weather didn’t permit us to land in Sogndal.

We had further delays when flying from Tromsø to Bergen; the plane was delayed three hours, causing us to miss our connection back to London and meaning that we had to spend another night in Bergen.

While this shouldn’t deter you from visiting fjord Norway in winter, from my experience I recommend keeping plans fairly flexible (you never know what the weather will do here!) and allowing an extra day in Bergen or Oslo before flying back to your home country.

Sogndal is the heart of the Norwegian fjords, and from here you can take public transport to places like Fjaerland and Flam.

Places to visit in fjord Norway in winter

You’ll find rocky cliffs tumbling into narrow bodies of water throughout the western part of Norway. Here are some of the best fjord destinations to visit throughout the cooler months:

Beautiful colourful houses made from wood in Bergen

The second-largest city in Norway and the hub of its fjord country, Bergen offers the perfect mix between urban and rural.

The beautiful city is much more well-connected than other destinations on this list – making it most certainly the easiest place to visit in fjord Norway in winter – but its city charms don’t just stop at its connectivity.

Bergen’s nestled right in between fjords; you can explore one on foot as you walk around the UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf, which was built by the Hanseatic League after the city was destroyed by fire time and time again. You’d think they would have stopped building from wood at one point!

Snowy streets in Bergen in winter

The city’s home to art galleries and museums (the Bergen Maritime Museum explains its intrinsic link to the city and was a personal favourite of mine), and there are opportunities to try fresh seafood (which fjord Norway unsurprisingly excels in), summit up surrounding mountains or toast to a successful day exploring at an abundance of bars – Frescohallen, which boasts beautiful murals depicting Bergen’s maritime history, was my favourite.

Historic sightseeing fjord cruise in Bergen

But you came here to see the fjords, and the fjords you will see! Boat trips leave from right outside the visitor’s centre, taking 3.5 hours and sailing past Bergen’s local fjords.

It’s not quite as immersive an experience as staying in Fjaerland, but if you want an easy-to-reach destination boasting a mix of city life and nature and with something for all ages, Bergen’s just the ticket.

An icy and snowy fjord, with the Norwegian flag in the foreground.

The chalk to Bergen’s cheese, Fjaerland is quiet, secluded and rather tricky to get to.

The best way (considering the Norwegian roads can be exceptionally difficult to navigate in the winter season for anyone who isn’t experienced in driving in these kinds of conditions), is to fly to Sogndal, take a bus to Sogndal city centre and then board another bus to Fjaerland.

Fjaerland’s not one to visit if you’re just on a quick city break – but if you’re on a longer winter trip around Norway and want to see some of its cosiest yet most dramatic locations, this village is one to not miss.

While Fjaerland is tricky to get to, when you’re here you’ll be welcomed like an old friend with exceptional hospitality at the Fjaerland Fjordstove Hotel and a range of activities organised by Fjaerland Guiding.

Girl standing on the fjord at Fjaerland, wearing a thick snowsuit.

Immerse yourself in the fjord’s natural scenery by taking a fishing trip (we went in rough, snowy weather – remember there’s no such thing as bad weather, only such thing as bad clothing!) or kayak right on the fjord if the weather’s smoother (it’s possible in the winter!).

Fjaerland is down the road from Jostedalsbreen , the largest glacier in mainland Europe, and guided snowshoe tours are available throughout the winter season.

There’s also the impressive Norway Glacier Museum , where you can take a virtual flight over the glacier, educate yourself on its geography and learn about the perils that glaciers all over the world face – and most importantly, what we can do to protect them.

An ice cave from the Glacier Museum in Fjaerland, Norway

If you’d rather sit and appreciate the views, step into the floating sauna, perhaps cooling down by taking a dip in the near-frozen waters.

You could also warm up in the Fjaerland Fjordstove Hotel , which was built in 1937 and nowadays boasts a range of homely, cosy rooms with fjord views and a large communal area where guests are invited to sit on squashy sofas and watch fjord life go by, and enjoy a steaming hot cup of coffee.

Coffee’s only the beginning of Fjaerland Fjordstove Hotel’s culinary offerings. “We don’t do things by halves,” our host Inna told us as she brought out plates of freshly-made pasta, mine served with a rich, creamy sauce and four different types of mushrooms.

By the time we were eating our light and zesty raspberry cake, topped with lashings of cream, I was considering moving there!

The wooden houses of Flam with snow covered mountains in the backgroud.

“The story of Flåm starts in 1850 with salmon and English lords” Anne, our host from Norway’s Best, described.

What was once a remote, cut-off village quickly drew the attention of tourists, with Frentheim Hotel (Flåm’s most famous) opening first as a manor house and gradually expanding to become a hotel.

This was largely thanks to the Flåm Railway, a lifeline link from Myrdal, a stop on the Bergen – Oslo line, down to the village.

Snowy streets of Flam with lights and cloudy sky in the background

While the railway started for logistical purposes, it quickly rose to fame as one of the world’s most beautiful railway journeys.

Flåm is also close to some of the deepest and largest fjords in Norway.

See these from above by partaking in a snowshoeing tour with Fjord Safari; the guide will take you into the mountains, to the epic Stegastein viewpoint. If you don’t want to walk the whole way down, there’s a quicker way – sledging!

Snowshoeing in Flam

You’ll find a range of fjord-based winter activities in Flåm as well.

All-day trips depart from the village on large electric boats with a warm indoor area – which could be preferable in freezing winter weather.

We opted for the more intrepid option, a RIB safari, which enabled us to get closer to the cliff edges (useful as visibility wasn’t great while we were in town); but the howling wind did get a little too bracing after three hours, even with over five layers of clothing on!

If you’re prone to cold, the electric boat is probably the better option – but if you think you can deal with a few hours of being in the great outdoors in sub-Arctic conditions, a RIB tour might be an adrenaline-boosting adventure.

Whatever your activity of choice, rest your head at Fretheim Hotel , which boasts a fine-dining restaurant serving delectable vegetarian, fish and meat courses; I had a beetroot salad, multi-layered vegetable terrine and a decadent white chocolate mousse.

Frentheim Hotel in Flam

Rooms at Fretheim are the perfect antidote to warm up from the cold, with comfortable beds, period furniture, heating control and roll-top baths.

Flåm’s the perfect mix between an immersive fjord experience and being relatively easy to access, thanks to its rail connections to Bergen and Oslo.

In the summer, cruises and daytrippers frequent the city in their hordes, but in the winter months, Flåm remains a well-kept secret.

Trondheim’s landmarked by Trondheimsfjorden, which is the third-largest fjord in Norway. Like other destinations around Norway, the landscape comes alive in Trondheim with a blanket of snow and a dramatic backdrop of ice.

The temperatures may be freezing, but the open sea fjords are ideal for cruising and sightseeing. In the surrounding countryside, you can enjoy snowmobiling, snowshoeing and skiing; Bymarka has more than 100 kilometers of cross-country skiing trails.

If the weather’s not on your side when you’re in Trondheim, the city encompasses several indoor attractions, such as the Norwegian University of Science and Technology Museum and the Trondheim Art Museum.

It’s also famous for the Nidaros Cathedral; an ancient church with a rich history.

Dating back to the 11th century, it’s a must-see attraction and is beautifully illuminated at night. Inside, you can marvel at the Crown Regalia.

Sogndal’s stunning fjords are surrounded by snow-capped mountains and frozen waterfalls.

In winter, the fjords are peaceful and quiet, with only the sound of the wind and occasional cracking of ice breaking the silence.

The snow and ice create a stunning contrast against the dark waters of the fjords, making it a photographer’s paradise.

Visitors to Sogndal can go on a fjord cruise or kayak to witness the beauty of the landscape from the water.

Or, try your luck at cross-country skiing or snowshoeing to explore the fjords and the surrounding mountains.

Panoramic view of Tromso Norway Scandinavia Europe

Northern lights tours, Sami culture, Arctic voyages…. Tromsø in winter is famous for a multitude of reasons, and fjords are often left off the list.

While Tromsø doesn’t sit amongst fjords itself, there are some nearby; and, like most other fjords in Norway, these are visitable throughout the year.

You’ll want to don some waterproof, thermal gear – you’re in the Arctic, after all – but Northern Yachting offers cruises ploughing into the fjords, with a commentary about the city and its surrounding nature as you go.

birds eye view over Tromso with a dusting of snow

The fjord destinations further south are probably more immersive, but Tromsø’s bursting with fun activities to try in the winter season – so if you’re looking for somewhere where you can enjoy all of Norway’s main winter draws (skiing, northern lights , reindeer , koselig culture) AND see some fjords, Tromsø delivers.

View of the Arctic Cathedral with the bridge spanning from Tromso island and a view of the Arctic Cathedral.

If one of your main reasons for visiting Tromsø is to see the rugged fjords, I’d recommend avoiding the polar night season; this is when the sun doesn’t really rise, meaning that the fjords will be in near total darkness. For a good mix of dark nights and some light in the day, try Tromsø in February.

The most budget-friendly way to visit Tromsø is to fly into Bergen or Oslo and transfer to Tromsø airport (we flew from Bergen). There are direct flights to the Arctic city from European destinations, but they’re pricey!

Things to do on the Norway fjords in winter

Jump into the snow at ski resorts and warm up in saunas. Head out on fishing trips and dine on freshly-caught seafood for lunch. Unleash your inner adventurer by taking a boat tour and then relax with a glass of wine at a homely hotel bar. Here are the best things to do on the Norwegian fjords in winter.

Sightseeing

RIB safari boat near Flam

There are few places quite as scenic as the Norwegian fjords, both in winter and summer.

So, obviously, one of the best things to do in the area is to see the stunning fjords themselves!

Sightseeing means something different for everyone, depending on your unique interests and abilities. It might mean layering up and sitting on the side of a fjord, hot chocolate in hand, or taking a boat tour to see the glacial rock formations up close.

With hotels in some of the most beautiful destinations in Norway, you won’t need to worry too much about factoring sightseeing into your winter itinerary – you’ll encounter breathtaking natural beauty every time you look out of a window.

Fishing tour in Fjaerland

Norway’s cod is something to shout about; the nation of Portugal , some 1,600 miles (2,600 kilometres) to the south, is obsessed with the stuff!

But it’s not just cod that you’ll find in the waters.

Fish for salmon, catch a gunard or look for crayfish on a fishing trip. Or, if you prefer your seafood already sauteed and served, ask for local specials in any restaurant.

Don’t worry if you don’t eat fish – I’m actually vegetarian (and am going off my partner’s and other travel mates’ word on how delectable the seafood was!), and I dined on fresh vegetables cooked in a variety of creative ways, crusty bread, deliciously doughy pasta and sweet and creamy desserts.

While Norway’s fjord landscape entirely alters in the winter months, some things never change – you’ll nearly always find someone tackling the fjord waters, even on the coldest of days!

We were invited on a kayaking trip in Fjaerland, and while I was enticed, the unruly waters when we were there meant that it was a no-go – at least for a bunch of novices.

“You’re unlucky though”, we were told by virtually everyone we met in the village. “The weather’s not usually this wild!”.

Floating saunas

Sauna with views out of the fjord at Fjaerland.

The tumultuous waters also meant that floating saunas were off the cards for our Norwegian fjords trip – but luckily, Jarle, the owner of Fjaerland Guiding, had a land-based alternative for us to try.

“You’re welcome to take a dip in the water too”, he told us. “It might not be as easy as in the floating sauna, though”.

The floating sauna bobs on the water’s surface, with a platform outside and a ladder descending into the chilly depths below.

The land-based sauna in Fjaerland

After a stint in the land-based alternative, watching the floating sauna sway on the waves, I stepped out and gingerly stepped toward the water’s edge, feeling the bite of the cold air on my skin.

Unfortunately, the land-based sauna was just a little too far from the water, giving my body the chance to cool down considerably and beg for another stint in 65°C+ temperatures before I reached the water’s edge.

But if I’d been in the floating sauna, I’d have definitely gone in , I told myself.

Snowshoeing

Beautiful fjord views that you can take in while snowshoeing.

Our feet crunched in the snow as we stepped, one foot in front of the other, up the mountain. With snowshoes, our feet stayed gripped onto icy terrain and ensured that we didn’t fall into the waist-height levels of snow.

We hiked to the epic Stegastein Viewpoint close to Flåm, the ideal place to see the fjords in their entirety, visualising how they were made by glaciers retreating, carving the landscape as they leave a comparative ribbon of water in their wake.

The tour starts and leaves from Flåm, bypassing some of the nearby villages before starting a climb up the mountains.

Claire on the slopes as she has snowshoe hiked to an epic viewpoint overlooking Flam.

Involving just one hour and 30 minutes of hiking, with a stop for Norway’s famous hot blackcurrant drink, it’s a fantastic way to explore the snowscapes without getting too cold.

Stay in cosy hotels

Denmark may have hygge , but Norway has koselig ; a concept surrounding cosiness in the cold and dark winter months.

can you cruise europe in winter

As we walked into Fjaerland Fjordstove Hotel , past bookshelves groaning with literature and toward a table accommodating eight slices of raspberry cake, with a candlelit view of the darkening fjords out the window, I finally started to understand this concept.

Fretheim Hotel is larger than the intimate Fjaerland Fjordstove, but its floor-to-ceiling windows and atmospheric bar offer guests the chance to witness fjord scenery while remaining toasty.

These cosy hotels, restaurants and bars are dotted throughout fjord Norway (and indeed, the entire country), and offer the ideal bases for winter trips to the country.

Australia and New Zealand, two mesmerizing countries in the Southern Hemisphere that are a part of Oceania, offer unique wildlife and natural wonders.

Keep in mind that winter is actually summer from November to February in the land down under because it's in the Southern Hemisphere, so pack accordingly.

Australia is home to iconic landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House, the Great Barrier Reef, and the ancient monolith of Uluru (Ayers Rock). The country's coastal regions offer pristine beaches, vibrant cities like Melbourne and Brisbane, and the chance to encounter unique wildlife. See kangaroos, koalas, and the elusive platypus in Australia.

New Zealand boasts awe-inspiring landscapes, from the geothermal wonders of Rotorua to the dramatic fjords of Milford Sound and the breathtaking mountains of Queenstown. It's renowned for its Maori culture and warm hospitality.

Popular ports in Australia include Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Cairns. In New Zealand, cruises often visit ports such as Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin, offering opportunities to explore stunning national parks and experience Maori culture.

Both Holland America and Princess Cruises focus on exploring these regions. You can even sail across the Pacific from San Diego to Oceania for an epic adventure.

Magical (Cold) Destinations for Winter Cruises

➜ river cruises in europe.

The Danube River in Central Europe is a popular cruise option year-round, but nothing compares to Christmas time. You’ll see bridges and buildings aglow with holiday decorations. You will feel as if you’re in a real-life Hallmark card.

You’ll be able to explore the incredible Christmas markets like nowhere else in the world and may even see European cities covered in fresh snow cover.

Christmas market in Budapest during a river cruise on the Danube in December.

Viking Cruises is highly regarded as a cruise line offering some of the best Christmas Market cruises . They often offer a new Christmas river cruise itinerary each year and repeat the most popular itineraries. For example, experience the holidays in Europe along the Elbe, the Seine, the Rhine, the Main, and Moselle rivers.

Other river cruise lines, such as AmaWaterways and Emerald Cruises , offer similar destinations and ports of call throughout Hungary, Austria, Germany, and France.

Other Christmas and New Year Cruises

One of the best places to cruise in December is to an area that really embraces the holidays or on a cruise with a special, seasonal itinerary.

For something spectacular over Christmas, head to Norway. Sail up into the Arctic Circle past Norwegian Fjords to witness the Northern Lights, and spot orcas and humpback whales. Take a cable car ride up for a picturesque view of the city of Tromsø , and even try a dog sledding adventure. A holiday cruise will include festive food, music, and cheer.

Or enjoy a magical Christmas cruise in the South Pole with Global Journeys. Embark in Buenos Aires to experience 13 days of exploring the Antarctic. You can also choose to take a very special journey and cruise into the New Year .

Disney lovers will appreciate a Very Merrytime Cruise by Disney Cruise Line , where you’ll experience a larger-than-life Christmas at sea. Various cruises voyage from Fort Lauderdale ,  Port Canaveral , or Galveston, Texas to the Bahamas or Caribbean islands .

We loved our experience aboard Riverside Mozart, the best cruise ship on the Danube River . The programming they provide to make this time of year extra cozy and special for their guests is impressive.

Special Thanksgiving Cruises

Surprise your family with a unique Thanksgiving. Travel aboard a “Funtastic Thanksgiving Cruise” with Carnival or stay close to home with American Cruise Lines river cruises. Explore Mississippi , Florida, Napa Valley, Charleston, or Portland while enjoying a traditional Thanksgiving feast.

PRICELESS PANORAMAS, FABULOUS FJORDs

Europe is beautiful in every season, but the peak of comfortable weather (especially in the north) is between May and September.

You should always be prepared for rain and colder weather when you travel to Europe, especially in the North. Dress in light layers for your vacation.

Europeans speak more English the farther north you go. Your phone's translation app (or, at minimum, learning how to say "Hello" and "Thank You" in local languages) will aid you along the Mediterranean.

Europe Travel Packing List

With help from Princess, creating your Europe travel packing list is easy. Between the weather and the excursions, each country offers something unique, which is why our comprehensive list considers all the experiences ahead. With most of our sailings lasting seven days or more, bring a larger-sized suitcase to pack all the necessities you may need and to make room for souvenirs you’ll bring home. In addition to the standard cruise items you’ll need, here’s our ultimate checklist for cruising to Europe.

Europe Packing Checklist: Daytime Clothing

The clothes you include on your European trip checklist will vary depending on your sailing date and the destinations you’ll be visiting. Average temperatures can range anywhere from lows around 20 degrees Fahrenheit in early winter to highs around 80 degrees Fahrenheit in mid-summer. Much of Europe has similar weather throughout each season, so we’ve broken down clothing into two categories — summer and spring as well as fall.

Summer Clothing

  • A swimsuit and a cover-up
  • Beach-friendly sandals
  • Comfortable walking shoes and socks
  • Casual dresses or skirts
  • Shorts or lightweight linen pants
  • T-shirts or tank tops

If you plan on spending a lot of time in the sun, add clothes made of moisture-wicking fabrics like polyester or Nylon to your Europe trip checklist. Please be aware that some settings — like religious institutions — will require that you cover your skin more than you may want to during the warm summer weather. If you plan on visiting these places, be sure to pack a long sleeve shirt and pants in a backpack. Women may also wear a maxi skirt or dress with a light sweater.

Fall and Spring Clothing

  • Jeans and pants
  • T-shirts and long-sleeved tops
  • Light sweaters
  • Light jacket or windbreaker
  • Sandals (for beach or water excursions)

Depending on where you travel, you may still want to bring a swimsuit when cruising in the fall or winter. For example, many cities in Greece enjoy temperatures in the high 60s and low 70s well into November.

Europe Packing Checklist: Evening Attire

When you cruise to Europe with Princess®, discover even more through More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays in select ports like Amsterdam, Barcelona and Stockholm. Sip on French wines during a dinner under the stars, or savor fresh Italian gelato while walking through the moonlit Piazza Navona in Rome. No matter what excursions you choose, make sure you’re prepared for cooler evening climates with our Europe packing checklist for More Ashore ports:

  • Sweaters
  • Dresses or jumpsuits
  • Dress pants and a blouse or button-down shirt
  • Comfortable shoes

If you don’t plan on returning to the ship between daytime and nightfall, be sure to pack your evening attire in a backpack. Remember that certain restaurants and venues may require more formal wear than others. We recommend planning ahead to find out which sights and attractions you’d like to explore. Adjust your Europe travel packing list according to their dress code. Or, pack an extra set of appropriate clothes just in case.

Europe Packing Checklist: Medicine and More

All Princess cruises come equipped with 24-hour medical service. You may still want to include the following items on your Europe packing checklist to bring on shore excursions:

  • Insect repellent
  • Nausea-relief medicine
  • Daily medication

Europe Packing Checklist: Technology

Europe is brimming with landscapes that have inspired some of the world’s most famous artwork. From the lush Cliffs of Moher to the pastel village of Positano, every port offers an idyllic backdrop for your photos. To show your loved ones at home the beauty that awaits them on the other side of the world, be sure to come prepared with the right devices, including:

  • Waterproof camera
  • USB converter
  • Portable charger
  • Memory cards
  • Extra batteries
  • Adaptor (for overnight stays)

If you’re cruising to a country where English is not the primary language, consider downloading a translator app to your mobile device prior to your departure. This can help you communicate with locals and decipher menu items or signs. That said, Princess shore excursions offer English-speaking guides for your convenience.

Your Europe travel packing list should complement your chosen itinerary and excursions. From tasting a pint of freshly brewed Guinness in Dublin to relaxing on the golden shores of Mykonos, make sure you’re prepared for the unforgettable opportunities that await you when you sail with Princess to this enchanting place.

8 best winter river cruises

by Emma Smith - 10/12/2018

Updated 13/07/2023

River cruises are synonymous with the stunning landscapes and local landmarks of picturesque villages and towns – watching the world pass by as you glide along the world’s waterways. Pair this with the winter season and you are in for a treat as some of our favourite scenes are sprinkled with snow and come alive with carols, markets and celebrations.

For the scenery

Hallstat in Austria in the snow

Often voted one of Austria’s most beautiful towns, Hallstatt is a destination draped in muted pink and yellow houses alongside the waters’ edge, overseen by breath-taking mountains which are blanketed by snow during the colder months. This UNESCO World Heritage site isn’t directly featured in any river cruises, but is well worth a visit beforehand or even afterwards.

For a warmer climate, sail along the Douro and visit Lisbon where you can still experience 15 degrees in January and it is sunny almost every day. Explore the city by day and take the Santa Justa elevator to appreciate one of the best views of the city. By night, catch the soulful sound of Lisbon’s famous fado as it spills out of the bars and drinking venues throughout the city for a truly local experience.

For festive fun

Another reason to river cruise in winter is to see the exceptional range of Christmas markets throughout Europe, from authentic German stalls to the fairs and winter festivals of Budapest .

A small journey away from the Rhine river is the Stuttgarter Weihnachtsmarkt, just a two-hour drive from the riverbanks. The market is considered one of Germany’s more traditional markets, stretching across the central square and featuring a miniature railway, ice rink and collectors’ fair.

Close to the banks of the Danube , Budapest’s Christmas Fair and Winter Festival is one of the oldest and most popular festive markets throughout the city. Boasting hundreds of wooden stalls selling novelty gifts, wander between the aisles with a mulled wine in hand and sample culinary delights.

For the celebrations

Chinese New Year lanterns

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site and, unsurprisingly, another Austrian beauty, Salzburg is the perfect winter getaway on a longer river cruise stopping at Vienna. Be welcomed by the aromas of spicy apple punch and roasted chestnuts emanating from Christmas market stalls, before taking a stroll down Getreidegasse, the city’s main shopping street which is illuminated by Christmas lights and twinkling storefronts.

Depending on the time of year you are travelling, why not experience Chinese New Year first-hand during a Yangtze river cruise? Running between January and March, this country-wide celebration sees locals decorating their houses with lanterns and paintings, setting off fireworks and partaking in the Lantern Festival, where colourful glowing lanterns float across the rivers, sea and lakes of the regions in beautiful unison.

For the culture

Architecture in Bruges during winter

If you are cruising along the Dutch-Waterways towards the end of the year, you will be amazed by the chocolate-box medieval city of Bruges. As the snow starts to fall, this region becomes awash with warm lights and festive flair – perfect for exploring whilst your ship is docked. Excursions can include a visit to the Christmas markets, a lesson on the history of cocoa at the Chocolate Museum, or simply time spent admiring the architecture of the city along the cobbled alleyways.

For the ultimate winter break, a river cruise along the Seine visits some of the most picturesque ports during the last few months of the year. Travelling from the characteristic harbour town of Honfleur towards the landmark location of Paris , the Seine is rich in cultural and architectural delights. See the Eiffel Tower sprinkled with icing-sugar snow, explore Mont St Michel with fewer crowds, or enjoy the many festivals and celebrations as they come alive along the riverbanks.

With so much to see along the rivers of Europe, Asia and beyond, there is a perfect winter river cruise for everyone. Whether you are looking to celebrate Christmas somewhere new or want to beat the winter blues after the busy festive season, take a look at our fantastic river cruise deals and book your perfect getaway.

My 7 Favorite Cruises In And Around Europe

W hat I love most about cruising around Europe is the huge choice in types of cruises you can go on. Because Europe includes hot and sunny destinations like Spain and Italy, and cold and interesting places like Scandinavia and Scotland, you can take a very different cruise each time around Europe. You can pull up in pretty ports in Greece and swim from the boat and you can sail around the shores of Scotland and take a cold water plunge — if you’re brave enough.

The coastlines of Europe are vastly different to one another and the types of cruises you can take are too. River cruises, yachts, island cruises, and large fun-packed cruise lines all sail around these shores. Plus, you can start your cruise in Europe and sail off beyond the continent, and then return after an adventure.

Here are my 7 favorite cruises in and around Europe.

1. Starclippers

Rome round trip .

This seven-night cruise begins and ends in Rome, visiting Lipari, Sicily, Amalfi, Sorrento, and Ponza. What I love about the Starclipper cruises is they are informal and casual — you dine with other guests or by yourself, you don’t have a set table for meals, and you can wear what you like as there’s no dress code. But at the same time, the interior of the ship and the cabins are sophisticated and semi luxurious, so it feels casual and chic all in one go.

This particular cruise is on the Starflyer , which has two pools and a sun deck. There’s no entertainment on board, though there might be some games in the evening, but children are welcome over the age of 6 months. I love these small-yacht ships that can get you into ports the larger cruise ships can’t, and this one is a beautiful ship with an atmosphere of relaxation and easygoingness. You can even join with the crew and help to sail the ship if you like.

2. French Waterways

Hotel barge prospérité: côte d’or.

If you like things really intimate, you can book a six- or eight-person cruise with French Waterways and have the barge to yourselves. This one is a canal cruise in France, but they also offer river cruises. The rooms on the barge are hotel standard and there’s a sun deck and a hot tub on board. The cruise ambles along the canals in the Côte d’Or, stopping off for a walking tour in Dijon, shopping and markets, and wine tasting at a vineyard.

This is a really relaxing way to cruise in France with family or friends, but you can’t book onto this cruise as a single person or a couple. This is a chartered barge that is priced for the maximum number of people it sleeps — six or eight. If you’re experienced, you can also choose to pilot the boat yourself.

3. G Adventures

Sailing from split to dubrovnik.

Sailing along the Dalmatian Coast is a unique experience and visiting Croatia is a trip full of historical sites and exploration. The yachts you’ll travel on with G Adventures give you a truly small-boat experience. If you want a luxurious cabin and lush interiors, this isn’t for you, but if you want a sense of adventure and an authentic sailing experience, this is definitely it.

The yacht accommodates a maximum of eight people, but you don’t have to be a part of the group, you can book onto this as a single person or couple. Note: If you book a solo trip, you will be sharing your cabin with someone else. It’s also worth noting that you’ll need a medium level of physical fitness to take part in the activities on this tour, which can include kayaking and hiking.

This is a self-catering trip, and while there’s plenty of opportunities to eat at the destinations, there aren’t any meals offered on board. This also means that when you eat your own food on the ship and/or cook for yourself in the kitchen, you are expected to tidy up after.

4. Hebridean Adventures

Hebridean island odyssey.

Sailing on board the MV Hjalmar Bjørge with the Northern Light Cruising Company, Hebridean Adventures brings you a trip like no other around the Hebrides Islands in Scotland. This nine-night cruise stops at Mull, Coll & Tiree, the Small Isles, and the Isle of Skye. Most people who take this cruise are wildlife enthusiasts and are sailing with the hope of spotting dolphins, puffins, eagles, and more. But even if you only have a passing interest in wildlife, this is a stunning way to get a bit closer to it.

Facilities are limited on board and the cabins are no-frills, with some only including bunk beds. You do have to share bathroom facilities, which is a challenge for some people, but guests are all aware of this and are very considerate. The onboard chef is a real plus on this cruise and they cater for any dietary requirements, cooking all meals fresh every day. The boat might be basic, but the scenery is breathtaking and it’s a unique type of cruise.

5. Celebrity Cruises

Egypt & israel.

Beginning in Athens, Greece, this 10-night cruise with Celebrity Cruises will stop off at Israel and Egypt before returning to Athens. There are 3 days at sea on this cruise, and on board the Celebrity Infinity , there’s a casino, an art gallery, a sun deck, indoor and outdoor pool areas, a spa, tennis, nightlife, and restaurants and bars.

This is a large cruise ship experience with capacity for 2,170 people. Rooms are hotel standard, some with verandas, and the experience of being on the ship is as much a part of the trip as exploring the stop-off destinations. The cruise gives you the perfect mix between Europe and a little further afield. For anyone who hasn’t strayed beyond Europe before, it’s a great way to get a taste of Egypt and Israel.

6. Variety Cruises

Italy & malta.

Beginning in Naples and sailing along the coast of Italy and around its islands, this small boat intimate cruise with Variety Cruises ends on the 8th day in Malta. At first, I thought it was unusual to end in a totally different place than where the cruise began, but actually, I loved the chance to get to know somewhere separate from the starting point.

The ship has capacity for 44 people and is a laid-back experience with just a sundeck, informal restaurant, bar, and swim platform. Most of your time is spent off the boat, exploring parts of Italy tourists don’t usually visit, and that’s the real draw with these small-boat cruises. These are ports large cruise ships can’t enter, so you feel like you’re on a voyage of discovery. Rooms are comfortable and pleasantly decorated and designed, but you won’t be spending much time in them. The Italian islands and Malta are beautiful places to explore.

7. Princess Cruises

Grand 11-day mediterranean.

This big cruise ship experience with Princess Cruises begins in Rome and travels to Greece, Turkey, Sicily, and Mallorca, ending in Barcelona, Spain. Aboard the Sun Princess ship, it’s all about fun on a large scale, with climbing walls, swimming pools, a spa, bars, cafés, restaurants, evening entertainment, and kids clubs.

It is aimed at families and there’s lots for all ages to do, but it’s also a great cruise to take as a couple or by yourself. There’s something going on all the time, but you can still find some quiet time on the sun deck. There’s 3 days at sea on this 11-day cruise and you’ll certainly never get bored. I love the stop-offs and visits to four different countries, with some really diverse excursions offered at every stop.
