YOUNG FATHERS

Scottish group Young Fathers will make their debut for Teenage Cancer Trust at Royal Albert Hall on Friday 22 March. Alloysious Massaquoi, Kayus Bankole and G. Hastings met as teenagers and formed Young Fathers in 2008, and the Edinburgh-based trio released several EPs and singles before breaking through with their 2014 debut album, Dead , for which they won the prestigious Mercury Prize. They continued to hone their categorically evasive hybrid sound, following with the heavier White Men Are Black Men Too in 2015. They’ve won the Scottish Album of the Year Award three times, including their third album, Cocoa Sugar in 2018 and their latest record, Heavy Heavy.  After a lengthy break, Young Fathers began 2023 with the release of Heavy Heavy; released on February 3rd via Ninja Tune and widely regarded as one of the best albums of the year, the album was nominated for the 2023 Mercury Prize and reached the Top 10 in the UK Albums Charts and No.2 in the Scottish Albums Chart.

Young Fathers announce 2023 UK tour dates

The Mercury Prize nominees hit the road this autumn

Young Fathers performing live on stage in 2023

Young Fathers have announced a run of UK tour dates for 2023 – find all the details below.

  • READ MORE: Young Fathers on playing with Depeche Mode and the “community” of ‘Heavy Heavy’

The Scottish trio are due to hit the road this autumn for headline gigs in support of their Mercury Prize-shortlisted fourth album, ‘Heavy Heavy’ , which was released back in February.

Kicking off at The Dome in Brighton on October 20, the upcoming tour will also include a show at the Eventim Apollo in London (October 21), a double billing at Glasgow’s legendary Barrowland Ballroom (23, 24), a stop-off at the O2 Institute in Birmingham (27) and a date at Manchester Academy (28).

Tickets go on general sale at 10am BST this Friday (August 4) – you’ll be able to purchase yours here . Alternatively, fans can access a pre-sale from the same time tomorrow (August 2).

Check out the official tour poster in the announcement tweet below.

This summer has already seen Young Fathers make appearances at festivals such as Glastonbury , Latitude and Best Kept Secret. The band’s upcoming dates include slots at Green Man Festival , Connect Festival and Electric Picnic .

In June, the trio opened for Depeche Mode at their huge Twickenham Stadium concert . Speaking to NME recently , Young Fathers’ Graham G Hastings described that show as “a different beast” compared to what they’re used to.

“It took us back to how we always operated before when we were always playing to a wee crowd,” he added. “How do you make an impact in 30 minutes with people who don’t know you?”

Young Fathers also claimed to have a shared “telepathy”. Kayus Bankole told NME : “You hear the music, but it actually has life when you see it live.

“As much as we can see through the recording process, being together, having this bond and telepathic communication where we don’t even have to speak in the studio – that translates on stage.”

Additionally, the group revealed that they have “an abundance of ideas” for their next studio album. Check out the video in full above.

The conversation took place last week at the launch of the 2023 Mercury Prize, where ‘Heavy Heavy’ was shortlisted alongside records by the likes of Arctic Monkeys, J Hus, Jessie Ware, Jockstrap, RAYE and Ezra Collective .

The winner of the Mercury Prize will be announced at a live ceremony at London’s Eventim Apollo on September 7.

Glasgow Dreamers: The Songs of Ivor Cutler

Summerhall, Edinburgh

There are several reasons why Young Fathers currently feel like the most exciting live band in Britain, but for now let’s concentrate on effect rather than cause. The Edinburgh trio have somehow managed to dispense with all the froth and blather of concert-making – gratuitous chat; choreographed audience interaction; the fat and gristle – to deliver a show that is all attack. Every minute is a prime lean cut, direct and thrilling.

They don’t mess about during the first of two sold-out Glasgow shows, but then brevity appears to be a kind of manifesto. The new album, Heavy Heavy , their fourth and not quite their best, lasts barely 30 minutes. Tonight, they perform 17 songs in an hour. The set is similarly minimalist. A huge white curtain hangs crookedly at the back of the stage, against which the musicians cast looming shadows as they whirl around.

There is something of the old-school soul revue about the way Young Fathers assemble. Think a post-apocalyptic Temptations. The three members – Alloysious Massaquoi, Kayus Bankole and Graham ‘G’ Hastings – line up at the front of the stage, alongside two female singers. Behind them is a drummer. Stage right, support act Callum Easter plays keyboards and guitar. Stage left is a contraption that looks like some kind of 19th-century Hebridean loom.

Young Fathers are like an old-school soul revue. Think a post-apocalyptic Temptations

From this they make a hugely exhilarating noise, an ugly-beautiful blend of beats, entwined vocals, melody and meaning. It’s never entirely clear where all the music is coming from. Apart from bashing an occasional drum, Massaquoi, Bankole and Hastings just sing, their blend of voices ranging from Tom Waits rasp to high, honeyed tones. The styles are fluid, a quick-changing mash-up of gospel, soul, rap, R&B and indie. The tonal shifts are extreme but never jarring. ‘Get Up’, ‘In My View’, ‘Rain Or Shine’ – with its woozy ‘Ghost Town’ keyboards – and ‘I Heard’ are all exemplary pop songs.

Most popular

The trouble with apple cider vinegar.

They don’t say much but their energy is propulsive. Towards the end the intensity levels spiral higher and the songs stretch out. ‘I Saw’ is a loping glam stomp, epic and kinetic. ‘Geronimo’ evokes Massive Attack; heavy, clicking, ominous. ‘Shame’ has a joyous Motown simplicity. ‘Toy’ builds to a frenzied coda and ends in a scream of sirens and shouts. No encore. No need. An hour of feelgood fury felt like a cleansing. Angry yet joyous.

Ivor Cutler would surely have loved the fact that a tribute to his uniquely sweet-and-sharp sensibility is taking place in the Dissection Room in Summerhall, formerly the royal veterinary school. More prime cuts. This year marks the centenary of the birth of the Scottish humourist, poet, philosopher and surrealist, beloved of everyone from John Peel to Robert Wyatt, and a guest star in the Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour.

Cutler died in 2006. In 2020, drummer Matt Brennan, guitarist Malcolm Benzie and saxophonist Raymond MacDonald compiled a tribute album, Return to Y’Hup , which they performed that year at Celtic Connections. Tonight they perform it again, with guest musicians including vocalists Emma Pollock of the Delgados, and Rick Anthony from the late, lamented Phantom Band.

Cutler’s presence is palpable throughout. The star of the show, plum centre stage, is a suitably battered old harmonium that once belonged to the man himself, played with all the reverence usually afforded a holy relic. Now and then, his taped voice is stitched into the songs.

The septet make a woolly, appealingly ragged kind of alternative rock comprised of conventional instruments alongside bells, chimes and things that whirr and clang. Their music is as much an act of invention as reclamation, adding structural heft to Cutler’s often threadbare songs. Benzie is particularly impressive, marrying the minimalist originals to a series of twisty hooks and riffs, bringing to mind early R.E.M. on ‘Size Nine and a Half’.

Lead vocals are shared around. ‘I Got No Common Sense’ is deployed as a Greek chorus, hollered out by the ensemble every 20 minutes or so. The songs are often comically short, and retain Cutler’s signature blend of lemony humour, Celtic melancholy and Zen-like acuity. Sung beautifully by Pollock, ‘Walking To A Farm’ epitomises his gift for shimmering simplicity: ‘The sky is blue, the sun is yellow.’

Elsewhere, there are songs about green rain, vitamin P, the boo-boo bird, dentistry and pickling your knees with cheese. In the second set we get some Cutler ‘classics’, including ‘Jam’, ‘I’m Going in a Field’ – Paul McCartney’s favourite – and Anthony’s lovely rendition of ‘Yellow Fly’. It’s all slightly disjointed and homespun, which seems an entirely fitting way to meander through the twists and turns of Cutler’s singular vision.

Young Fathers hometown show!

We came to Edinburgh especially to see Young Fathers, seeing as it was the final date on their current tour, and a hometown gig. The venue is stunning, such a beautiful old theatre, and we were sat upstairs in the Grand Circle. We had a great view, and the sound was fabulous. The staff at the hall were all very friendly and helpful, and Young Fathers played an incredible set. All in all it was a terrific evening!

This was my first visit to the Usher Hall.We came down from Aberdeen to see Young Fathers. What a great venue for a gig.Staff were very attentive, the bars were easily accessible and we managed to squeeze right down the front for an outstanding set from Young Fathers.Thank you

Awful!!!!!!!, Security prowled dead eyed stalked whoever in upper stalls...instead of dealing with whatever issue they had. Right beside me. Scared me , distracted be...no explanation , no reassurance...nothing. we finally left as we couldn't see the band anyways/,and were anxious about why the house lights rose and someone was removed. Security covert,?, not at all!!! Awful. A very very much anticipated night...very expensive...that lasted 45 mins of Dead South. Cheers...not!

Alfie Boe was as usual excellent but the cheap seats were appalling it was like 3rd class rail. If it wasn't for them seats it would be a sellout

We saw the amazing Deacon Blue at usher hall last night and it’s our first time there! Stunningly beautiful building , great staff and all round ambiance. Would love to come back to Edinburgh and Usher Hall another time

Just seen Nile Rodgers concert. Bad view despite being told other wise by the Halls booking office. Hard seats, narrow gangways. Bad sound system, with much of the concert being distorted.

Young Fathers announced as Scottish Album of the Year Award winner

Article Source: The Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award Last Updated: 27 October 2023 8:51

YOUNG FATHERS CLAIM £20,000 WITH NATIONAL MUSIC PRIZE PAOLO NUTINI’S ‘THESE STREETS’ AWARDED MODERN SCOTTISH CLASSIC AND NO WINDOWS WINS THE SOUND OF YOUNG SCOTLAND 26th October - Young Fathers ‘Heavy Heavy’ was tonight announced as winner of The Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award at the prestigious Ceremony in Stirling’s Albert Halls. Young Fathers claimed the title ahead of a Shortlist including Paolo Nutini, Becky Sikasa, Joesef and more, taking home £20,000 and the coveted title of Scottish Album of the Year for the third time. Paolo Nutini’s debut record ‘These Streets’ was awarded the Modern Scottish Classic Award, in association with YouTube Music, with the Paisley singer-songwriter’s manager and sister taking to the stage to accept the award on Paolo’s behalf as he’s currently in the USA. No Windows was named The Sound of Young Scotland, winning a £10,000 funding package to create their debut album. Since its inception in 2012, The SAY Award has now distributed over £350,000 in prize money, recognised 240 Longlisted albums and championed Scottish music from legends of the scene to new and emerging artists. Alloysious Massaquoi, Young Fathers winners of The Scottish Album of the Year Award 2023 said, “Thank you to the judges, and all the nominees and everybody that’s turned up tonight - it's a bit radge! The album is called ‘Heavy Heavy’ for a reason, it’s the trials and tribulations of everybody. It’s one of those things where we sort of had to start from scratch, it had been 4 or 5 years since we put something out since Cocoa Sugar. For us to get back together and get excited again with each other, all the ideas that everybody else brings - it's great and this is topping off a great year. “We did two shows at the Barras and I think the Scottish crowd is one of the best - it's always nice to come to these places because it feels very homely! So it's mad, it's topping off a great year for the guys and I. One has responsibilities - he's got two bairns so he's not allowed out.I want to take a whole bunch of shots but I'm a lightweight so I just want to watch myself! “Watching the young folk coming up there - it's inspiring. I don't think the guys and I will ever lose that - we look at stuff right across the board. There's a lot of room for inspiration here and we gain a lot of inspiration right across the board. Thank you to everybody. Thank you, we love you all and appreciate it.” Paolo Nutini, winner of 2023’s Modern Scottish Classic Award for ‘These Streets’ said. “It was nice to hear that ‘Last Night In The Bittersweet’ was being recognised and that means a lot and hearing the news about ‘These Streets’ was a surprise to say the least. Mental news that I never expected for a minute! “All I can say is thank you so much to those who the music means something and for listening to the songs. It’s nice to be mentioned in the same breath as these people who I have a lot of respect for. I really appreciate it and I’m proud to be a part of it all. I’m sorry I couldn’t be there on the night to say thanks in person but please know that it means a lot. Thank you.” No Windows, winners of The Sound of Young Scotland Award said, “Thanks so much to The SAY Award for this award. If you couldn’t tell, we didn’t write anything - it’s such an honour to just be here. We were just happy for the day out. Thank you to everyone here. Scotland right now is such an exciting time and place for music and it feels like a complete honour to be a part of that and be part of such an incredible group of musicians.” The biggest night in Scotland’s music calendar, The SAY Award Ceremony was held in the heart of Scotland at The Albert Halls in Stirling for the second consecutive year. Hosted by Nicola Meighan and Vic Galloway, the event saw the country’s top stars celebrate the very best of Scottish music - past, present and future - in a resounding display of the strength and diversity of Scotland’s music industry. Young Fathers are the first act to win The SAY Award for the third time. Their two previous wins came in 2014 with ‘Tape Two’ and 2018 with ‘Cocoa Sugar’. Young Fathers won the overall final prize from a record-breaking eligible album list of 437, whittled down to a Longlist of 20 and then a Shortlist of 10. Listen to The Scottish Album of the Year, ‘Heavy Heavy’ by Young Fathers here . Robert Kilpatrick, Interim CEO and Creative Director of the Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA) said, “In 2018, Young Fathers made history by becoming the first artist to win the Scottish Album of the Year Award twice. As the band continued on a meteoric rise; defying definitions with their sound and bringing a level of energy and power that’s uniquely theirs, tonight sees them claim Scotland’s national music prize for the third time with their strongest and most mesmerising body of work to date. “Their win signifies the importance of recognising and investing in outstanding Scottish talent, and through the support of The SAY Award (and many other well-deserved accolades), Young Fathers continue to capture the magic and bring it into the lives of music fans worldwide. “Tonight’s win further cements their world-class status, and through doing so, Scotland’s global reputation as a country overflowing with outstanding and idiosyncratic creative talent. They’re a band we can be proud of, a band we can be inspired by and a band who, quite simply, keep astounding, delighting and enthralling us. “This year’s Ceremony also saw us shine a spotlight on Scottish music’s bright future and rich past, with dream-pop Edinburgh duo No Windows winning the Sound of Young Scotland Award and now set to make their debut record. Paolo Nutini’s iconic 2006 debut ‘These Streets’ was also recognised as 2023’s Modern Scottish Classic Award winner; celebrated through a specially curated performance featuring some of this year’s SAY Award Nominees who chose it as the winner. “Past, present and future, Scottish music is the stories and soundtrack of our lives. The SMIA is proud of its ongoing commitment to strengthen, empower and unite Scotland’s music industry, and The SAY Award once again highlights the cultural impact and contribution of outstanding Scottish music.” Head of Music at Creative Scotland, Alan Morrison, said, “Young Fathers’ stunning SAY Award hattrick crowns a magnificent year that saw the Edinburgh trio reach the UK Top Ten Album Chart for the first time and deliver the summer’s most talked-about set at Glastonbury. One of the foundation stones of this success was Creative Scotland’s funding of Heavy Heavy’s recording costs, proof that public funding keeps artistic excellence and cultural diversity at the forefront of Scotland’s boundless music scene. Congratulations too to No Windows whose edgy but ethereal dream-pop puts the future of our music in adventurous hands.” Stirling Council leader, Cllr Chris Kane said, “Congratulations to all three winners, including the well-deserved 2023 Scottish Album of the Year recipient: Young Fathers, No Windows as The Sound of Young Scotland and Paolo Nutini’s ‘These Streets’ as the Modern Scottish Classic. “Stirling’s historic Albert Halls was the perfect stage for this special event, welcoming artists and fans for a great evening’s entertainment. “Our award winning Tolbooth theatre, well known and used by many of the Shortlisted artists, will also host an exhibition by local designer Stuart Blackman on the back of his commission to create the trophies. “Thanks to everyone involved in making The 2023 SAY Award such a success and reaffirming Stirling’s reputation as a cultural hub and major events destination.” Music fans, artists and industry flocked to Stirling city centre to enjoy a stellar line-up of performances before the winner was revealed. The Ceremony opened with 2022 SAY Award winner Fergus McCreadie who returned to the venue for the first time since winning, and closed with an epic live set from electronic DJ and producer TAAHLIAH. The audience enjoyed an electric performance from one of Scotland’s most exciting rising talents Dead Pony, to mark 10 years of PRS Foundation’s PPL Momentum Music Fund, before it was time for a special set celebrating the Modern Scottish Classic Award winner, Paolo Nutini’s ‘These Streets’. Guest vocalists Becky Sikasa, Shortlisted for this year’s SAY Award, and Brownbear, Longlisted this year, took to the stage with The SAY Award house band (led by former SAY nominee Joe Rattray of Admiral Fallow) to perform hits including ‘Jenny Don’t Be Hasty’, ‘These Streets’, ‘Last Request’ and ‘New Shoes’. Each Shortlisted album was celebrated on the night with acts including Joesef, Bemz, Andrew Wasylyk and more collecting their awards onstage and recognising the incredible talent on offer from this year’s list. The nine runners-up received £1,000 as well as statuesque concrete totems, created via The SAY Award Design Commission by local Stirling artist Brutal Concrete Workshop. Winners of each prize, The SAY Award, Modern Scottish Classic Award and Sound of Young Scotland Award, took home beautifully unique concrete and terrazzo bowls. Highlighting the enduring links between music, art and design in Scotland, The SAY Award Design Commission worked with Brutal Concrete Workshop to use low-carbon concrete and sustainable methods to create a lasting award commemorating 2023’s artists. The SAY Award Shortlist for 2023 in alphabetical order was: Andrew Wasylyk Hearing the Water before Seeing the Falls Becky Sikasa Twelve Wooden Boxes Bemz Nova’s Dad Brìghde Chaimbeul Carry Them With Us Brooke Combe Black Is the New Gold Cloth Secret Measure Hamish Hawk Angel Numbers Joesef Permanent Damage Paolo Nutini Last Night In The Bittersweet Young Fathers Heavy Heavy A panel of esteemed experts from across the UK’s creative industries gathered to debate 2023’s Shortlist and choose this year’s winner. Chaired by Arusa Qureshi, the judging panel was: Adem Holness (Head of Contemporary Music, Southbank Centre), Andrea Gibb (Screenwriter), Ariel Cohen (Strategic Partner Manager, Artist Development, YouTube Music), Becci Scotcher (Senior Grants and Programmes Manager, PRS Foundation), Charles Jeffrey (Fashion Designer), Gordon Smart (Broadcaster), John Rostron (CEO, Association of Independent Festivals), Katie Goh (Writer and Editor), Laura Boyd (Entertainment Reporter and Presenter), Pete Sparkes (Artistic Director, Drake Music Scotland), Titania Altius (Head of Member Services, PPL). The Modern Scottish Classic Award (in association with YouTube Music) is an annual recognition of an iconic album from Scotland’s past that still inspires today, with ‘These Streets’ selected as the winner by 2023’s Longlist. The Paisley singer-songwriter was also part of this year’s Shortlist with his latest album ‘Last Night in the Bittersweet’, showcasing a career spanning over 17 years which continues to inspire new and established artists alike. Recognised for both his debut and latest record, Paolo Nutini is one of the UK’s most talented songwriters and beloved artists and his Modern Scottish Classic Award was celebrated on the night before enjoying a four song set of tracks from ‘These Streets’. The Sound of Young Scotland Award (supported by Help Musicians, Youth Music Initiative and Youth Music) winner was revealed on the night with No Windows chosen by a panel of 11 former SAY Award nominees. With the award aimed at providing key financial support to young and emerging artists to enable the creation of their debut album, No Windows receives a £10,000 funding package including cash grants, in-kind use of The Old Tolbooth’s recording studio in Stirling, business advice sessions with Help Musicians and up to 500 vinyl pressings from Seabass Vinyl, Scotland’s first vinyl pressing plant. No Windows was chosen as this year’s winner from a line-up of five finalists: Danny Cliff, Pearling, Pippa Blundell and Queen of Harps. David and Dominique Harvey from Seabass Vinyl said, “Congratulations to No Windows on winning The Sound of Young Scotland Award. What fantastic recognition! We can’t wait to work with No Windows in the next coming months, and we hope you’ll visit us whilst your record is being manufactured in our plant! Supporting new artists and being involved in the Scottish music infrastructure are some of the key reasons why we started this family-run pressing plant based in East Lothian, and we’re very proud to be part of this initiative.” The SAY Award once again joined forces with Scotland’s national children’s and young people’s mental health charity, Tiny Changes, set up in memory of Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison to help young minds feel better. The SAY Award is a Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA) production and has distributed over £350,000 in prize money to Scottish artists since its inception in 2012. The SAY Award 2023 is delivered in partnership with Creative Scotland, Stirling Council, Stirling Alive with Culture, YouTube Music, Seabass Vinyl, Ticketmaster, Help Musicians, HMV, FOPP, PPL, Spotify, Go Forth Stirling, Youth Music Initiative, Youth Music, Music Declares Emergency and The Golden Lion Hotel. Now in its twelfth year, previous winners of The SAY Award are: Fergus McCreadie ‘Forest Floor’ (2022), Mogwai ‘As The Love Continues' (2021), Nova ‘Re-Up’ (2020), Auntie Flo ‘Radio Highlife’ (2019), Young Fathers ‘Cocoa Sugar’ (2018), Sacred Paws ‘Strike A Match’ (2017), Anna Meredith ‘Varmints’ (2016), Kathryn Joseph ‘Bones You Have Thrown Me And Blood I’ve Spilled’ (2015), Young Fathers ‘Tape Two’ (2014), RM Hubbert ‘Thirteen Lost & Found’ (2013) and the inaugural winner Bill Wells and Aidan Moffat ‘Everything’s Getting Older’ (2012). At home with Young Fathers’ Alloysious Massaquoi, where vintage menswear is king

At home with Young Fathers Alloysious Massaquoi where vintage menswear is king

Being on tour, for many musicians, is a poisoned chalice, one that hides myriad discomforts beneath a haze of glamour. Not for the perennially-sunny Alloysious Massaquoi of the Mercury Pirze-winning Scottish group Young Fathers, who gets up every morning to “watch the sunrise from the top deck of the tour bus”.

The trio, who met as teenagers in Edinburgh, last found acclaim in 2018 with  Cocoa Sugar , a unique, rollicking hip-hop album that won them their second Scottish Album of the Year award. Right now, Alloysious is on tour with his bandmates, performing the follow-up to that triumph: the comparatively sunny (in sound, at least)  Heavy Heavy . Was he nervous about filling his own enormous shoes? “Nah. To put it simply: the follow-up is better,” he tells us. “We know the record is great because we can all confidently stand behind it without flinching. It feels like a classic to me.” And indeed, it is a wonderful listen, brimming with driving electronics, choirs, and unusual percussion. Clearly, it was created by a group of powerfully creative and ambitious individuals — if we’re to go by Alloysious consistent sense of joy, that is, which shines through in every essential he runs us through.

And what’s in the future for Young Fathers, the band Alloy calls “something that goes beyond ourselves”? He simply has this to say, “‘Gee Brain, what are we gonna do tonight?’ The same thing we do every night, Pinky: try to take over the world!’” Here are the home essentials helping him do it.

Let's start in the kitchen! What inspires you there?

Conversations with my mother and watching her cook. It’s influenced me a lot because I can apply all that to life lessons. Going with your gut, feeling things out using instincts. It’s  Heavy Heavy on emotional intelligence (see what I did there). In all my life I've never seen her measure or say it takes x amount of time to cook something. She instinctively knows how to gauge it all. She puts enough of whatever is needed in the mix and knows when to turn the fire up and when to let things simmer down.

Any cooking techniques that she’s taught you?

Seasoning, and FFS wash your rice.

Which parts of your kitchen do you love the most?

My kitchen countertop by Concrete Studio Scotland! It’s all the different textures and colours complementing each other within close proximity. The backdrop has gold fan tiles, amber glass blocks where a door used to be and it’s all cocooned by terracotta-coloured walls. The worktop looks like a sculpture. Full bullnose over a waterfall edge that wraps the brushed gold profile & light wooden cabinets. Uh-huh: sexy, right?

Which are the books that you consider essential; your desert island books, if you will.

OK, so if we were on a cruise, the weather got choppy and the ship capsized…  I’d have to do the complete works of James Baldwin. I’d also take Bell Hooks’  The Will To Change: Men, Masculinity & Love .  Footprints In The Sand by Reshad Feild and  Darwin Devolves by Michael J. Behe.

Oh, actually I’d take both David Goggins books  Can’t Hurt Me and  Never Finished . Preferably on Audible with a solar-powered phone that never runs out of battery. He’d give me the kick up the backside to tap into a warrior mindset to get things done and, eh…survive?!  I’d like to think it would help turn a complete disaster into some form of paradise.

Tell us about your morning routine.

I watch the sunrise from the top deck of the tour bus. I try to have food earlier in the day, followed by some stretches and a shower. I also prefer to choose the outfit that I’m going to wear onstage after I’ve been to the space so that I get a sense of what to wear for the occasion.

What is your grooming essential of choice?

It's 100 per cent pure coconut oil, but I also love Abbey perfume, a quality unisex perfume brand at affordable prices. It makes me question all those expensive niche perfumes (ones I have and paid a lot of money for). But you live and you learn… sometimes. Buy the ‘perfume library’ first, then decide on which ones you like and work best for you. I tend to mix and match my day-to-day and evening scents, so I like Kir Cashmere, Piper, Kindled Rose & Terra Mirus but lately my go-to is Piper.

Where do you source your wardrobe?

It's mostly vintage and charity shop clothing . The best thing I ever found was when I bought a Versace bottle green leather trench coat. I try to steer clear of what people expect of me being an artist, but this just looked good too damn good. Plus, it almost became like my second skin. I think people tend to talk about clothing and style as quite futile things but it really can be connected to a sense of self.

The jacket contributed to where I was at with the band around 2012/13. It made people see me in a way I wasn’t quite sure I wanted to be seen as. That forced me to get out of my head and embrace the moment. I've really enjoyed the PDSA charity shop and Armstrong’s Vintage in Edinburgh. Bintus Vintage and HUMANA in Berlin are both also excellent.

Calvin Klein x Raf Simons Mariachi Trousers

What's a piece that you bought new that you love?

My Calvin Klein x Raf Simons Mariachi trousers. At $1,700, I was initially too scared to wear them. I got the trousers along with a pair of expensive earrings to mark an important moment when we toured internationally for the first time and started making some money from our music. The trousers became a bit of a symbol for someone like me, coming from a working class background. Being able to afford a luxury item like that was something that was out of my reach until then.

I packed them away for some years, then when I felt a bit more courageous, I couldn’t find the right occasion to wear them…until earlier this year. They came out at Paris Fashion Week where I went with a childhood friend of mine who owns a modelling agency in London.

All items here were recommended by Alloysious. When a product wasn't available for purchase, we've provided an alternative.

YOUNG FATHERS

Australian tour september 2014.

young fathers tour scotland

From the UK via Liberia, Nigeria and Scotland, Young Fathers have pursued a unique trajectory, from mid-teen hip hop trio via psych-pop rap to where they are now, on their own original island thrown up by a pop volcano, tectonic plates of genres rubbing up against each other like under-sea dirty party-people; seams of molten pop history spewing lava more fertile than guano, upon which the rich foliage of hook, rhythm and bass grow immodestly in the sun.

Catch them in Australia for the very first time as part of Listen Out festival.
