5 of the Best Small Group Tours of Ireland

Dubbed the “Emerald Isle” for its lush landscape, Ireland is a fabulous destination to explore, whether independently or as part of a guided group tour.

Dramatic cliffs, medieval castles and a rich culture steeped in literature, folklore, art and music are just some of the appeal of this fascinating country that occupies most of the island of Ireland, off the coast of England and Wales. And while travelling independently here is perfectly possible thanks to its relatively small size and well-developed transport network, there’s plenty to say for coming as part of a group, too. If you like the idea of meeting like-minded travellers during your Ireland adventure, we’ve picked out 5 of the best small group tours of the country currently available.

Irish Explorer (7 days)

Taking in almost the length and breadth of the island of Ireland, this action-packed tour will see you visit a huge number of cultural, religious and historic sites over a full week. Starting in Dublin, you’ll spend your first full day exploring the capital of Dublin, with some free time included. Next, it’s on to neighbouring Northern Ireland for an insight into the country’s often tumultuous past and a look around the capital of Belfast by car and foot. For the remainder of the week, there’ll be visits to Galway via the famous Wild Atlantic Way – the longest coastal drive in the world – the magnificent Cliffs of Moher, traditional pubs and art museums in Limerick, hiking trails, churches and golf courses in Killarney, and plenty more. The tour ends back in Dublin, via a stop at Blarney Castle, where you’ll have the chance to kiss the legendary Blarney Stone. In Dublin, you can celebrate your last night with an Irish music evening, including dinner and a show. From €958 per person.

Corners of Southern Ireland (7 days)

ireland small group tours reviews

Focussing on the Republic of Ireland, this week-long tour starts and ends in Dublin and takes in some of the country’s most spellbinding scenery. After an introductory evening and dinner in the capital, the next morning you and your small group will head off into the countryside, passing through bucolic fields and past ancient castles, maritime towns and picture-postcard villages. Along the way, your guide will regale you with stories and facts about the country’s past and present. There’ll be plenty of stop-offs too, including visits to Molly Gallivan’s Cottage, where you’ll learn the story of a widow who supported her children by brewing illicit whiskey, a look around the famous House of Waterford Crystal, home to a traditional Irish craft, and a walk atop the sublime Cliffs of Moher. From €2,779 per person.

Best of the West (5 days)

Discover one of Ireland’s most beautiful regions on this immersive five-day tour of its western reaches. Each day you’ll be treated to different landscapes and landmarks, from dramatic sea cliffs with crashing Atlantic waves to ancient monasteries to historic castles. The tour also includes famous routes such as the Ring of Kerry as well as a number of “off the beaten track” sites and places of interest. Wherever you go, there will be the chance to meet locals in traditional pubs and quaint village cafes, sample authentic Irish cuisine, and listen to traditional music, all designed to get under the skin of this beguiling country.  The tour starts and ends in Dublin. From €1,160 per person.

If you’re short on time or budget, this three-day whistlestop tour may well fit the bill. Visiting a total of ten destinations, you’ll take in unspoilt coasts that blend into rocky shores, ancient ruins, local pubs, and plenty more. Departing the capital, you’ll travel south towards Cork, through the lush farming counties of Kildare, Laois and Tipperary, and stopping in the heritage town of Cahir. You’ll continue to Blarney, on the outskirts of Cork, with time to wander the castle grounds and kiss the famous Blarney Stone, before visiting the Jameson Whiskey Distillery. Over the ensuing days, there’ll be visits to the historic port town of Cobh, Ireland’s oldest city of Waterford, the thriving town of Kilkenny, the Wicklow Mountains, the 6th-century monastery of Glendalough, and the famous Sally Gap, before the short journey back to Dublin. From €589 per person.

Amazing Ireland (14 days)

For those with plenty of time on their hands and a hefty budget to go with it, this incredible two-week adventure is certain to leave you with life-long memories. Over a leisurely fortnight, you’ll get to soak up tons of iconic sights, landmarks and places of interest in both rural and city settings, as you travel across the country by a combination of land and sea. Among the most notable stop-offs will be the Titanic Belfast, Kilkenny Castle, Giant’s Causeway, Belleek Pottery Visitor Centre, Kylemore Abbey, Connemara, Cliffs of Moher, Blarney Castle, the John F. Kennedy Arboretum and the Dunbrody Famine Ship. There’ll also be the chance to enjoy several special activities including a curated dinner with a celebrity chef at her home in Ballyknocken. The tour starts and ends in Dublin. From €3,380 per person.

Best time for travel the best of ireland featuring the wild atlantic way.

While just about any month is great to visit Ireland, there are a few prime times of the year for the Best of Ireland tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.

Spring: After a sleepy winter, the Emerald Isle reveals its lush landscape against fields bursting with bluebells, daffodils, and frolicking spring lambs. The season heralds longer days, which means more time to visit must-see sites without the crowds.

Summer: In the course of a summer day in Ireland, it might feel like you’re experiencing all four seasons! As the sun sets late in the evening, longer days mean having more time to take in the spectacular scenery and see the landscape in full bloom.

Fall: Ireland turns red and gold in autumn, enhancing the emerald colors of its epic landscape, so it’s appealing to leaf peepers, too. Also, it’s a cozy time to visit.

Venture though Connemara National Park, where bogs and forests cut through the rolling mountains. Take in breathtaking scenery before arriving at Kylemore Abbey, situated on the shores of Pollacapall Lough. The monastery was founded in 1920, but the castle that houses the abbey was earlier a private home. Explore the Abbey with an expert guide, getting a glimpse into this storied building’s past. Containing over 50 rooms in addition to incomparable views of the natural landscape, a visit to Kylemore Abbey is more than you would expect of a Irish monastery. With free time to discover the area more on your own, perhaps you’ll wander through the extensive gardens or rest along the shore.

This culinary and cultural adventure begins at the Guinness Storehouse, Ireland's top international visitor attraction. This self-guided tour allows you time to wander over 7 floors with your audio guide, learning about how Guinness is brewed, it's various advertising campaigns over the years, and of course you get to taste the iconic drink at its spectacular Gravity Bar. Enjoy a sweeping 360º view of Dublin as you savor a complimentary pint. Then, indulge in a quintessential Irish dinner at a contemporary restaurant that explores “New Irish Cuisine,” serving up cutting-edge dishes using the freshest, local ingredients.

Experience the ethereal landscape of Giant's Causeway.

Learn about Derry's political history during a locally guided city tour.

With a traditional seanchaí (Irish storyteller), listen to folklore and legends that have been passed down through generations.

Our small groups guarantee Never more than 26 guests per tour

We always keep our tour group sizes small. That's because we want every guest to get the comfort, space and service they deserve. Although many other companies squeeze in groups of up to 50, even the largest of our tour packages are strictly limited to just 26 guests. That leaves empty seats on the coaches. So why do we limit our tours to such small group sizes? Here are six reasons.

Superior Service

Guests consistently list our small group sizes as a top reason why they would book with us again. See our reviews...

More focus on you

With a smaller group, our tour guides have more time to get to know you and your interests.

We deliberately leave empty seats on our coaches, so you can relax and spread out.

Experience each attraction up-close and personal, with more time to ask questions and see what interests you.

Speedier Check-Ins

Compared with many of our rivals, our smaller group sizes make checking in and out of the hotels a breeze.

More Relaxed Pace

Experience Ireland at your own pace. No rushing to keep up and no waiting around for large groups to assemble.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Ireland; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact an embassy or consulate of Ireland to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

If you are interested in sporting activities, many opportunities await you on this particular journey. Golfing is available at select resort hotels. You may rent clubs and purchase golf balls but you will have to bring your own footwear. If you would like to fully enjoy the exceptional courses at Ashford Castle, you may wish to schedule additional nights either before or after your tour. Experience has taught us that the earlier you book your tee time the better – even ahead of your departure! If you decide you would like to play once you have arrived, your Tauck Director will endeavor to honor your request. Tennis facilities are available at several hotels including Ashford Castle and Aghadoe Heights Hotel. Fishing is possible at Ashford Castle. Horseback riding is available at Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa and Ashford Castle. You will have the opportunity to swim in the pool at several of the hotels used on this tour. Any expenses incurred in conjunction with these optional activities are at your own expense.

Ireland has introduced a ban on smoking in all enclosed places of work in Ireland. This includes all bars, night clubs, restaurants and hotels. Although the public spaces within the hotel are non-smoking, you may request a smoking guest room at your hotel.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S., no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Ireland. For complete vaccination and inoculation information please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here.

If you are a resident of another country, please contact an embassy or consulate of Ireland to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

The Best of Ireland, Small Groups involves a considerable amount of walking. To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. The visits to the Cliffs of Moher, Kylemore Abbey and Giant's Causeway are challenging due to the steep climbs and long walks involved in the sightseeing.

Most hotels do not have special handicap access rooms.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The weather in Ireland can be variable, alternating between wet and cool days, and sunny and mild days. The climate is generally moderate throughout the country, tempered by the Atlantic Ocean Gulf Stream. Average high temperatures from April through October range from 55 to 65˚F (13 to 18˚C) and the average low temperatures range from 40 to 55˚F (4 to 13˚C). Ireland, like other European countries, has experienced unusually warm spells in recent summers. Ireland's greenery owes its notoriety to the frequent rainfall.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

The weather in Ireland is moderate. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. The Emerald Isle owes its name to its precipitation, so rain is to be expected anytime.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket and tie for men are acceptable dining attire, although it is not required. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but by all means be comfortable.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. Irons and ironing boards are available upon request. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are also available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to Ireland:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Review: luxury gold in ireland.

Posted by David Porter on Monday, July 11, 2022 · 6 Comments

Here is our review after experiencing a 12-day small-group tour of Ireland with Luxury Gold .

Carol and I are just home after spending nearly two weeks in Ireland on a small-group, 5-star land tour with our friends from Luxury Gold.

The Best Way to Experience Ireland

While ocean, river, and expedition cruising is very popular because you’re only unpacking once, many destinations in the world don’t lend themselves to a cruise.

When it comes to Ireland, most cruise lines will visit Dublin and Belfast, leaving vast parts of Ireland’s beauty and charm untouched.

For this reason, we decided that our trip to Ireland would be on land. And, as we do not enjoy traveling with large packs of people, we also agreed that we would travel in a small group and with a luxury small group tour company that offered guests luxury accommodations.

It’s been over 10 years since Carol and I have experienced a small-group luxury tour.  We greatly enjoyed our Luxury Gold experience in Ireland.  Let me share a few of the reasons why:

Why Luxury Gold?

Luxury Gold Luxury Coach Seating

  • The Guide – As you spend a fair amount of time traveling from place to place on a land journey, you must consider the person guiding you on your way. First of all, our guide was our traveling concierge. She managed every trip detail along the way and recommended restaurants and sights for our free time. But more importantly, she was a licensed travel guide. The amount of information she passed along to us on our way was pretty remarkable. Further, she was native to Ireland.  If you’re going to learn about a country, the only way to learn is through the eyes of a local. For example, having a guide imported from the United States will significantly change the experience. When our guide, Erica Dalton-Joyce, talked about some of the troubling times in Ireland’s history, you could feel the emotion as she shared these stories from her native perspective. And from the opposite perspective, her Irish pride was also palpable as she shared all that is good about her home country. Oh, I also immensely enjoyed Erica’s Irish brogue. It just wouldn’t be the same to learn about Ireland’s “wee people” without the color of her native tongue.

  • The Hotels – Hotels and resorts are an important piece of any land journey. A lumpy mattress, or a room the size of a closet can cast a shadow of gloom on your experience.  To complicate this for luxury travelers, there may not be 5-star hotels in every destination along the way. Here again, I thought Luxury Gold did a wonderful job.  Where 5-star hotels weren’t available, we enjoyed fabulous 4-star properties.  And we even enjoyed two nights in Ashford Castle which would meet the needs of even the most discriminate 5-star traveler.

Traditional Irish Breakfast

Traditional Irish Breakfast

  • The Pace – We found the pace of the tour to be a good blend of sightseeing and relaxation. Certainly, our time in the coach traveling from place to place was relaxing and comfortable, but we also enjoyed the fact that three of our mornings included a “relaxed start” to grab a little extra sleep. And our earliest start time on the whole journey was 8:30. Some tour companies will have you up and out early in the morning.  There was none of that here.

Summing it all up

I was a little apprehensive about doing a small-group land journey.  The first bit of reluctance revolved around the frequent packing and unpacking required to move from one place to the other. However, each of the hotels loaded our luggage in the coach each morning, so we weren’t lugging heavy luggage each day. And we learned to pack differently so that we could live out of our suitcase packing cubes. We quickly developed a system of what needed to come out of the suitcase at each location (typically bathroom necessities), and our specially designed suitcase cubes kept our dirty laundry separate from the clean.

My biggest relaxing deep breath came when I saw and experienced how comfortable the coaches were with Luxury Gold. We had plenty of room, and reclining seats, and we all greatly enjoyed the Irish countryside as we traveled around the country.

So, the question becomes: would I go on another Luxury Gold small-group land tour? Yes. Yes. And, Yes.

In fact, there are a number of destinations that I would love to enjoy in Luxury Gold style. Japan quickly comes to mind. And so does Scotland.  And while we have already experienced Italy a number of times, we think Italy with Luxury Gold would also be the cat’s meow.  I’m also thinking that New Zealand would be an excellent destination to visit by land.

So, while we have become one of the nation’s leading cruise booking travel advisors, because of our Luxury Gold experience, I am now far more open to exploring a destination by land.

Thank you Luxury Gold for opening my eyes to land journeys done right.

Thank you so much for the review. My husband and I are booked on the same trip in late September. You answered so many questions that we had, so helpful. I am finding it very difficult to book flights to Belfast without several long layovers, so we are going to fly in to Dublin and take the bus from the airport to Belfast, will have an extra day and night in Belfast. Did you have any difficulty with your flights? Thank you.

You’re welcome, Maureen. You’re going to have a great time. Flights are a constant battle right now. I hope everything works out for you and you can enjoy all that Ireland has to offer.

We made such great friends along the way.

I consider Vagabond the best choice because they are flexible and open to suggestions ...

It was obvious that Vagabond's only goal is to make sure their customers have an excellent experience while visiting Ireland. Highly recommend!

Our Driftwood Tour was amazing. Having a small group made the adventure so much more fun.

Having a smaller vehicle let us explore places that big buses couldn’t reach.

My only dilemma is what trip to book with them next.

Traveling with a small group is definitely the way to go.

If Ireland is on your bucket list, be sure to go with a Vagabond Driftwood tour!

"The tour with Jason far exceeded my expectations. Jason was an amazing VagaGuide. He is professional, witty, and very well informed about all things Ireland. I asked a lot of questions, and if he didn't know — which was rare — he did some research and came back to dinner or breakfast with an answer... The guesthouses and hotels were top-notch. I wasn't sure what the expect and I was pleasantly surprised. The van was super comfortable and was a perfect way to travel... I watched the packing guide... which was super helpful! Because of all this, I was very well prepared for the trip. That made for an even more enjoyable experience. Your staff were very helpful. I asked a few questions in advance of our trip, and got prompt responses... I can not stop thinking about Ireland... Every chance I get I tell everyone about Vagabond Tours. I can't wait to go again and I've even convinced my husband to join me on our next one."

"We are back home now and feel like our trip to Ireland was a dream... From the beginning when we first booked to the end, the trip exceeded our expectations. From the itinerary, to the hotels, to the guides, this was perfection. Where do I start with Tim? He was knowledgeable, kind, encouraging, with a wicked sense of humor and has a great appreciation for adventure. He really made the trip memorable and one we will look back on years to come with a smile. Not only did we have some awesome hikes/walks we really learned SO much about Irish history. Tim always seemed to have a little surprise in store for us that was always so fun. I loved the picnics that we were able to enjoy due to such awesome weather. Between the stories, music and games while traveling the rides seem to go very quickly. Tim always had great recommendations of places to eat for lunch or dinner and were never a disappointment. We never felt rushed, and the timing really flowed well."

"I'm writing directly to you to express our gratitude and appreciation for the flexibility and creativity of your company in adjusting to my family's special circumstances. It was a pleasure to meet you on August 11 in the lobby of the Grand Canal Hotel. You very quickly introduced us to Bébhinn, one of the two fantastic guides who shepherded us around Ireland. You already know what a gem she is. There is nothing I can add. She was superb in every aspect of her duties. Denise had the difficult task of taking over in the middle of the trip. She was top-notch in every way as well. Both women were great story-tellers, and could continue talking through the hairiest traffic situations. Really professional drivers. Our thanks to everyone in your company who made our trip so memorable. We appreciate the changes... made to accommodate our grandson joining the tour in the middle. We have nothing but good things to say about the experience, and will say them to anyone who asks."

Honest reviews help future guests make informed choices (which helps our independent business grow too).

We love hearing back from recent guests and the many, many Vagabonds and Driftwooders who come back to us for their 2nd, 3rd and more tours.

Thank you for helping maintain our 5 star rating over 21 years in business!

An amazing experience. Small group is the way to tour. The country is beautiful.

I got to know everyone on the tour and made some lasting friendships.

Andrew, our tour guide was the best. He was so accommodating to everyone and took care of our needs. His sense of humor can’t be beat.

I just finished the Treasure Ireland Driftwood tour and it was fantastic!

We had an amazing guide, Andrew, who was experienced, knowledgeable, funny and kind. I definitely felt like I was in good hands.

The other people on the tour were great company and we enjoyed many meals together, but there were opportunities to branch out on our own as well.

I would absolutely recommend Vagabond!

We had a such a great trip from beginning to end.

Our guide Brian was very knowledgeable of Irish history, stories and the best sites to see.

We had a great time seeing fantastic sites and historical places in the company of really great people, and under the care of a really diligent and caring guide.

The small group really helped us to click quickly.

I really like the flexibility afforded to our guides...

[They] took us to some extra places that I think only local people would know about.

Private Tour Reviews

Private Tour of Ireland group at Gougane Barra

Every one of our guests loved every single day and we couldn’t have been more pleased with how it all came together.

Our tour was a unique one for our group and it was the perfect hybrid for everyone. The adventure activities were truly breathtaking and the people who didn’t want to do those activities were happy at the pubs and sleeping in...

We felt so lucky with what all we got to see and do and the fact that the weather was so good.

Edwina was amazing and we feel so lucky she was our guide and we got to spend the week with her showing us around your fantastic and beautiful country! We had multiple guests who cried when we came home because they didn’t want to leave and one who seriously is considering moving there.

Thank YOU for all you did in making the rest of our trip a huge success. You were a dream to work with and we hope to come back in the future! 😊

Private tour of Ireland group in Donegal

Our family just completed a Private Tour which was wonderful for all of us from age 9 to 76. The plan for our group met the need for variety and action.

Our guide, Rhys, rolled with whatever the day held... He made the trip interesting and was able to answer our historical queries and find great places for all 12 of us to eat together.

The tour you arranged for the north of Ireland allowed us to venture into stunning country on the coast. Our hikes were unforgettable and our son declared one to be the ‘best ever’. Every place held charm of its own...

The places you found for our accommodation were excellent. The grandkids, well, all of us, appreciated the castle stay... It was a magical setting.

Private tour group with vehicle in Connemara

The whole tour was one of the best tours we have been on.

From the beginning there were great updates provided of the culture and what to expect in Ireland.

We really liked the small bus tour versus a large bus.

Both guides, Brian and Eamonn were fantastic. They provided great stories, a ton of local knowledge and made the trip more enjoyable.

The people were fantastic, the food was great and the drinks were superb... Great scenery, great stops, great hotels...

We will recommend Vagabond to others here!

Things to Consider Before Booking Your Day Tour

Consider distances and driving time before booking and keep in mind you’ll spend a couple of hours in transportation for most of these day trips.

Weather is often bad in Ireland which can be disappointing. Make sure to pack rain gear and wear layers. You might want to bring snacks and water as well. For some tours, bad weather might require a change of itinerary.

The more places are included in the day tour, the less time you’ll get to spend at each stop, so you might feel rushed.

Make sure to read carefully the itinerary, what’s included, and the reviews, so you know what to expect. I would advise contacting the tour company after booking to confirm your reservation and the itinerary.

Best Small Group Day Tours From Dublin

1 – cliffs of moher, the burren, and bunratty castle.

Cliffs of Moher, Ireland

⭐️  Rating : 4.5 out of 5 Stars | 🚶  Group Size : 25 people | ☘️  Check Rates and Availability

The Cliffs of Moher are simply a must-see when in Ireland. It’s one of West Ireland’s top tourist attractions and you’ll understand why once there. On this tour, you can choose to see the cliffs from above , at the visitor center, or from sea level with a cruise .

If you pick the cruise, there will be an additional fee, and note that the cruises only run from March to October.

On your way there you’ll drive by the Burren along the Wild Atlantic Way, offering some of Ireland’s most striking landscape.

Visiting the Burren was one of the highlights of my trip, the landscape is unique and like nowhere else. While you won’t have time to go for a hike at the national park, you’ll be able to take in the scenery while driving through the region.

“Incredible! Our group ended up just being 4 people so we got an extremely personal experience. Our tour guide, Nick, was great and very knowledgeable!”

– HALEY (READ MORE REVIEWS )

On your way back, you’ll stop at the 15th-century Bunratty Castle and Folk Park where you can have lunch, tour the castle, and have a glimpse of what rural life looked like centuries ago, before making your way back to Dublin.

All entrance fees are included, except if you pick the cruise, and you’re free to bring a packed lunch or have something at the cliffs or at the castle.

The tour is operated by PaddyWagon one of the leading tour companies in Ireland. Their guides and drivers are usually known for making the trip fun and informative.

2 – Connemara Full-Day Small-Group Tour from Dublin

Kylemore Abbey, Ireland

⭐️  Rating : 4.2 out of 5 Stars | ⏳  Duration : 12 hours | ☘️  Check Rates and Availability

The Connemara is one of Ireland’s most beautiful regions. On this small-group day tour from Dublin, you’ll get to drive around the peninsula , seeing its wild landscapes, rugged mountains, and breathtaking lakes.

During the nicer month (April – October), you’ll get to go on a 1.5-hour boat cruise around Killary harbor and the fjords. The rest of the year, you will visit the Killary Sheep Farm where you’ll watch a sheepdog demonstration and be told about life in the Connemara.

“Long but great trip! Our excellent bus driver Jonathan made sure we were happy and content and even entertained us with some beautiful Irish singing”

– HELLEN (READ MORE REVIEWS )

You’ll then stop by the 19th-century Kylemore Abbey where you’ll have time to get lunch (not included) and take some photos. You might have time to visit the abbey but it’s not planned in the tour.

You’re last stop is the city of Galway where you’ll get free time to explore the downtown area. Try to catch a live traditional music performance at one of the pubs if you can!

3 – Wicklow, Powerscourt, and Glendalough Day Tour

Powerscourt House & Gardens

⭐️  Rating : 4.5 out of 5 Stars | 🚶  Group Size : 16 people | ☘️  Check Rates and Availability

Just an hour south of Dublin lay the beautiful Wicklow Mountains known for its great hiking trails, stunning scenery, and hidden gems.

If you don’t want to feel rushed and spend many hours in transportation, I recommend booking this tour as the places visited are not too far from Dublin.

You’ll start the tour with a stroll around Powerscourt Gardens , considered some of the most beautiful gardens in the world . You’ll find a cafe and a souvenir shop there as well.

Then you’ll head to the charming Enniskerry Village where you can have lunch and stroll around.

“Very comfortable van for our small group. John gave us a detailed explanation of everything and all the tour activities were on time. The places we visited were stunning.”

– DANIELA (READ MORE REVIEWS )

In the afternoon, the tour will take you through Wicklow Mountains National Park with stops at the “PS I Love you” bridge and Guinness Lake . You’ll take the scenic road (aka the Old Military Road) so you can enjoy the beautiful scenery all around.

Then comes the highlight of this day trip: Glendalough , known for its ancient monastic settlement and the hiking trails up the mountains and around the 2 lakes. You’ll get free time to explore the ruins of the settlement and stroll around the first lake.

You can also just hang out at one of the cafes if you’re not up for a walk, it’s pretty flat though.

The tour does not include lunch and the Powerscourt entrance fee (9 euros).

4 – Wicklow and Glendalough Day Tour with Horse-Back Riding

Glendalough Ruins

⭐️  Rating : 4.5 out of 5 Stars | 🚶  Group Size : 8 people | ☘️  Check Rates and Availability

Run by the same company as above, this tour is similar except that the stop at Powerscourt is replaced with horseback riding . You’ll be assessed and then given a horse that matches your skills before heading for a 1,5-hour ride through the beautiful Wicklow’s countryside.

“This was a very great day and the guide was just marvelous! The horses are very well taken care of. The whole trip is smoothly and perfectly planned.”

– ANNA (READ MORE REVIEWS )

5 – Celtic History Tour: Newgrange & Knowth

Knowth, County Meath, Ireland

Also a great option if you want to stay close to Dublin and not spend many hours in transportation, this small group day tour will take you to 2 of Ireland’s most important historic sites .

Newgrange is the largest burial site and place of ancient worship in Ireland, aligned with the winter solstice, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site . You’ll start the day visiting it and you’ll get explanations about the site and its history on the ride there.

Right next to Newgrange, you’ll also get to visit Knowth , a smaller site with 17 tombs.

“This was the best tour we did in Ireland. I recommend it to everyone. Our guide, Johnny was a fount of information and brought many historic stories to life. “

– SERINA (READ MORE REVIEWS )

Then you’ll head to Oldbridge Estate where the Battle of the Boyne took place. You’ll learn more about Irish history and the importance of this fight between the forces of the deposed King James II and those of King William III.

The Monasterboice Monastic Site is the last stop of the day. It was founded in the 5th century by St Buithe and today, two churches from the 14th century remain as well as a round tower from the 10th century and many Celtic high crosses.

6 – Aran Islands Scenic Flight and Galway Rail Tour

Aran Islands

⭐️  Rating : 4.5 out of 5 Stars | 🚶  Group Size : 10 people | ☘️  Check Rates and Availability

This tour is a great option if you want to see the Aran Islands but only have one day. A 3-hour train ride will take you to Galway where a shuttle awaits to take you to the airport.

The scenic flight is only 10 minutes and will take you to the island of Inis Mor . You’ll then visit the island, with some of the stops requiring a short hike , passing by thatched cottages, sandy beaches, medieval churches, and Celtic stone crosses.

Some of the highlights include the pre-Christian fort of Dún Aonghusa, the Seven Churches, and the charming village of Kilronan.

“The tour was well planned and very informative. We very much enjoyed both the train ride and the flight over to the islands. Frank our guide was so nice and very helpful! All the sights on the island were enjoyable.”

– SANDI (READ MORE REVIEWS )

Before taking the train back, you’ll have some free time to stroll around Galway .

The guide will meet you at the train station in Dublin and travel with you and your group. Meals are not included.

Note that the flight might be canceled last minute, even on your way there, because of bad weather. In this case, you’ll be offered an alternate tour of the Connemara region and a refund for the difference.

7 – Giant’s Causeway and Bushmills Tour

Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland

⭐️  Rating : 4 out of 5 Stars | 🚶  Group Size : 25 people | ☘️  Check Rates and Availability

This Northern Ireland day tour from Dublin is a great way to see the country’s highlights when you’re short on time.

Your day will start with a tour of the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world, Bushmills Distillery . You’ll get to see the factory at work, sample the beers they produce, and shop for souvenirs.

You’ll then have lunch at a local pub before starting on the Giant’s Causeway , where you’ll get skip-the-line admission to the Visitor Centre, free time to explore, and a visit of the interpretative center.

“This tour was a great way to see two outstanding attractions. We especially wanted a small group and the extra cost is well worth it. Though it is a long day stops along the way and returning to Dublin made the travel just fine. Our guide was informative and upbeat throughout the entire day.”

– TONI (READ MORE REVIEWS )

Travel along the coastal routes through the Glens of Antrim on your way to Belfast before returning to Dublin.

Everything is included except for food.

8 – Glendalough, Wicklow Mountains, and Kilkenny Day Tour

Kilkenny

⭐️  Rating : 4.5 out of 5 Stars | 🚶  Group Size : 16 people |  ☘️   Check Rates and Availability

I’ve already listed 2 tours for the Wicklow Mountains but this one also includes Kilkenny, a must-visit during a trip a Ireland.

On this tour, you’ll drive through Wicklow National Park and have some time in Glendalough to visit the ruins and walk around the lake.

Then you’ll spend the afternoon in Kilkenny . Once you arrive you can pick a place to have lunch before meeting back with the rest of the group to go visit the castle .

“Our tour was lovely. It was nice having just a small group along the way. Richard was very friendly and funny, and knowledgeable about the area. The van was comfortable and the drive between the sites was scenic and informative. We had the freedom to explore each site at our leisure and thoroughly enjoyed the day.”

– AMANDA (READ MORE REVIEWS )

The town is really charming with old colorful buildings and paved streets, perfect for a stroll. You’ll get some free time to explore on your own as well.

Lunch and the entrance fee for the castle (8 euros) are not included.

Overall Kilkenny is a nice town to visit and small enough to do so in a short time, but it will add driving time to the day compared to the two other options that include Wicklow.

9 – Blarney Castle and Rock of Cashel Day Tour

Rock of Cashel, Ireland

If you don’t mind the long drive, and you know you won’t go to Southern Ireland or Cork later on, then this is a great day tour to take. You’ll visit two of Ireland’s most beautiful castles: the Rock of Cashel and Blarney Castle.

Entrance fees to both are included and you’ll have time enough to visit both thoroughly.

“Great trip, driver very knowledgeable”

– CHRISTINE (READ MORE REVIEWS )

The Rock of Cashel is one of the best-preserved medieval buildings in Ireland. There don’t miss the stunning  Cormac’s Chapel  from the 12th century, the  Round Tower , and the  Gothic Cathedral  from the 13th century.

In Blarney, don’t miss kissing the Blarney Stone , believed to give the gift of dab.

Frequently Asked Questions

This tour starts from centrally located Abigail's hostel in Dublin, please note this is subject to change and the confirmed starting location will be provided with your travel documents.

The tour ends at approximately 4-6pm depending on traffic, with a dropoff outside Abigails Hostel or Dublin Airport. (Please note this is subject to change)

Airport transfers are not included in the tour cost, however, you will be able to get a taxi for about €20-€25 or there will be a public bus for approximately €6-€8 to take you to the city centre.

The group sizes can vary however there will only ever be a maximum of 15 travellers on every tour.

It is always hard to pack for a holiday, however, Overland Ireland kindly requests to try to keep your luggage to a medium size suitcase or a 70L backpack plus a day pack not larger than 25L.

Whilst on the tour you will stay in locally run and highly-recommended guesthouses along the way. Each guesthouse on your tour has been carefully sourced and tested to suit every traveller.

If you have a dietary requirement such as gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan etc please let our team of travel experts know at the time of booking. Once you are on the tour Overland Ireland will do everything they can to ensure all the included meals are suitable for you.

If you are a solo traveller, you can choose to either share a room with another traveller of the same gender or if you would prefer the privacy of your own room there is an additional single supplement cost. To choose a private room please contact our team of travel experts or simply select 'Single Room' on the booking page.

On the tour, you will meet a wide variety of travellers including plenty of solo travellers, friends travelling together, couples and siblings. Don't worry by the end of the first day everyone will know each other so you will no longer feel like strangers but more like great like-minded friends!

There is not a set packing list however it is recommended to travel light and bring a few essentials such as: - Walking or hiking boots/shoes - Waterproof jacket and a few sweaters - Beach towel - Music - Camera In Ireland, it is known to experience all 4 seasons in one day so its best to bring plenty of light layers.
