Acquaintance between persons supposes that each knows the other; we may know a public man by his writings or speeches, and by sight, but can not claim acquaintance unless he personally knows us. There may be pleasant acquaintance with little companionship ; and conversely, much companionship with little acquaintance , as between busy clerks at adjoining desks. So there may be association in business without intimacy or friendship . Acquaintance admits of many degrees, from a slight or passing to a familiar or intimate acquaintance ; but acquaintance unmodified commonly signifies less than familiarity or intimacy . As regards persons, familiarity is becoming restricted to the undesirable sense, as in the proverb, " Familiarity breeds contempt;" hence, in personal relations, the word intimacy , which refers to mutual knowledge of thought and feeling, is now uniformly preferred. Friendship includes acquaintance with some degree of intimacy , and ordinarily companionship , though in a wider sense friendship may exist between those who have never met, but know each other only by word and deed. Acquaintance does not involve friendship , for one may be well acquainted with an enemy. Fellowship involves not merely acquaintance and companionship , but sympathy as well. There may be much friendship without much fellowship , as between those whose homes or pursuits are far apart. There may be pleasant fellowship which does not reach the fulness of friendship . Compare ATTACHMENT; FRIENDSHIP; LOVE. As regards studies, pursuits, etc., acquaintance is less than familiarity , which supposes minute knowledge of particulars, arising often from long experience or association .

I began to feel uncomfortable being naked in front of them because of the questions and the poking and prodding and search for Mommy's 'inside penis' -- that's what they thought a vagina was, i don't think it makes them terrible people or scars them for life if they stumble into the bathroom while I'm going, but it's easily avoidable awkwardness none of us really needs to experience on a daily basis.
Darrin Vick :
It's just like brushing the greatness of the country all into one picture and one experience.

Why Petrified Forest National Park deserves to be a destination, not just a detour
Petrified Forest National Park may not ring a bell, even though more than half a million people visited last year, according to National Park Service data .
“People come to Petrified Forest unintentionally, often. They're on their way, typically, to or from the Grand Canyon or during spring break , they’re headed to spring training ,” said park ranger Jessica Barnett.
The park is located right off Interstate 40 in eastern Arizona, about 3 hours from Albuquerque International Sunport and 3.5 hours away from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport by car.
“The really great part of this park is there's something for everyone,” Barnett said. “I think people don't realize it when they come in. They pass it by because they're like, “Hmm, petrified wood. What's good about that?' There’s so much more.”
Here’s what travelers should know about Petrified Forest, the latest national park in USA TODAY’s yearlong series .
What is special about Petrified Forest National Park?
Petrified Forest calls itself a Triassic park . It preserves more than 200 million years of history, including its namesake petrified wood .
It’s the only place chindesaurus fossils have ever been found. Coelophysis fossils have also been discovered in the park, but dinosaurs only make up a fraction of the prehistoric life that once thrived across its more than 221,000 acres.
“Everything else is an ancient reptile or ancient mammal ancestor or ancient plants,” Barnett said.
Visitors can see paleontologists work on a variety of fossils and artifacts at the park’s Museum Demonstration Lab or ask park rangers about Petrified Forest’s more modern history.
“We're working on rehabilitating our prairie dog population, so maybe someday we'll get to reintroduce the black-footed ferret , which is the most endangered mammal in North America,” Barnett said.
The park also preserves a portion of historic Route 66 .
What Native American tribes were in the Petrified Forest?
“We have an incredible record of people, human history in the park – more than 13,000 years,” Barnett said.
Thirty-six Native tribes are connected to the land:
- Colorado River Indian Tribes of the Colorado River Indian Reservation
- Havasupai Tribe of the Havasupai Reservation
- Hopi Tribe of Arizona
- Hualapai Indian Tribe of the Hualapai Indian Reservation
- Jicarilla Apache Nation
- Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians of the Kaibab Indian Reservation
- Las Vegas Tribe of Paiute Indians of the Las Vegas Indian Colony
- Moapa Band of Paiute Indians of the Moapa River Indian Reservation
- Navajo Nation
- Ohkay Owingeh
- Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah
- Pascua Yaqui Tribe of Arizona
- Pueblo of Acoma
- Pueblo of Cochiti
- Pueblo of Isleta
- Pueblo of Jemez
- Pueblo of Laguna
- Pueblo of Nambe
- Pueblo of Picuris
- Pueblo of Pojoaque
- Pueblo of San Felipe
- Pueblo of San Ildefonso
- Pueblo of Sandia
- Pueblo of Santa Ana
- Pueblo of Santa Clara
- Pueblo of Taos
- Pueblo of Tesuque
- Pueblo of Zia
- San Carlos Apache Tribe of the San Carlos Reservation
- San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe of Arizona
- Santo Domingo Pueblo
- Tohono O'odham Nation of Arizona
- Tonto Apache Tribe of Arizona
- White Mountain Apache Tribe of the Fort Apache Reservation
- Yavapai-Apache Nation of the Camp Verde Indian Reservation
- Zuni Tribe of the Zuni Reservation
Can you take rocks from Petrified Forest?
No. Federal law prohibits removing, defacing or trafficking in archeological resources on public or Native lands.
Leave No Trace: How to protect national parks for future generations
Why is the Petrified Forest cursed?
“There is this really interesting history of people taking petrified wood and then bad things happening to them and them associating it with having taken the petrified wood,” Barnett said. “I think that's more guilt than anything.”
She said the park prefers to focus on the good.
“Rather than you're bad and you're going to be cursed if you take the wood, you're a good person if you leave it behind for future generations. That's such a huge part of the Park Service mission,” she said.
How long does it take to go through Petrified Forest National Park?
“You can do all of the main road hikes in a day,” Barnett said.
The park’s website suggests several itineraries ranging from an hour to a half day for travelers passing through, but visitors who like to get off the beaten path will need more time.
“You could easily spend two or three days in the park and really experience it to kind of its fullest potential,” Barnett said.
Petrified Forest’s operating hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MST. Guests who are already in the park gates by 5 p.m. can usually stay until around sunset. Visitors who want to stay later to stargaze in the certified International Dark Sky Park can get a free Dark Sky Viewing Permit at the park’s Painted Desert Visitor Center.
There are no lodges or campgrounds in the park, but wilderness camping is allowed in the park with a free permit.
Can you just drive through Petrified Forest National Park?
Yes, the park’s main road spans 28 miles and takes about an hour to travel by car. There is $25 park entry fee for private vehicles.
“We try to tell people, if they're going east, to come in the south entrance because GPS always brings people to the north entrance and then have to go in and come back out,” Barnett said. “If you're going any other direction, you can start at either end of the park.”
Visitors can see petrified wood scattered through the park’s southern end and clustered in five large petrified wood deposits referred to as forests: Rainbow Forest , Crystal Forest Jasper Forest , Blue Forest , and Black Forest.
“You have a huge range in the colors of the petrified wood, the textures that you get, and even the way it looks at the surface – whether it's sparkly and like individual crystals that you can see, that look like a geode, or if it's all grown together and it looks like a candle wax,” Barnett said. “Every single stop has something really incredible there.”
Is Petrified Forest National Park worth it?
“It's worth a trip on its own,” Barnett said. “It is such an incredible place if you know what it's about. If you don’t know, If you're driving on the interstate, it’s like, ‘That looks like a bunch of grassy fields. What could be interesting about this place?’ And then you get into the park, you go over the hill, and you're like, ‘The Painted Desert is amazing! It's so beautiful!”
To make the most of trips, she encourages visitors to talk to park rangers who can tell them more about the park.
“There's such amazing history, archaeology, modern biology, geology, paleontology,” she said. “It’s a great place, and I hope more people come just to see it.”

Historic meeting of French impressionists recreated in Paris exhibition
Immersive tour at Musée d’Orsay takes visitors back to 15 April 1874 – the moment that marked the movement’s birth
In a lush red-and-gold carpeted photographer’s studio in northern Paris, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Edgar Degas are adding the final touches to the hanging of their paintings, while fellow artists Berthe Morisot and Camille Pissarro lament the lack of recognition for their work and Claude Monet bemoans being mistaken for Édouard Manet.
Outside, Parisian gentlemen in top hats and ladies in bustles are admiring the newly completed Opera House or enjoying an early evening drink on the café terraces while horse-drawn carriages clatter down Baron Haussmann’s new grands boulevards.
The Musée d’Orsay’s exhibition that opens this week – Paris 1874 Inventing Impressionism – will take visitors on a virtual voyage back 150 years to the very moment that marked the birth of the movement that changed the history of art.
When the 30 artists now known as the Impressionists gathered at the studio of the photographer Félix Nadar at 35 boulevard des Capucines in Paris on the evening of 15 April 1874, they were largely unknown and struggling.
Many had been shunned by the jury of the annual Académie des Beaux-Arts Salon, the official arbiters of artistic merit, and had decided – almost in desperation – to open their own independent exhibition.
At the time, they were not known as “Impressionists”: the term emerged shortly afterwards when the journalist Louis Leroy employed it as a sarcastic synonym for “unfinished” in his critique of Monet’s Impression, Soleil Levant, later hailed as the symbolic founding masterpiece of the exciting new movement.
During the 40-minute immersive tour, visitors will spend a virtual evening with the young artists at their breakaway exhibition and travel by steam train to Bougival, west of Paris, where many of them worked, helped by the development of oil paints in tubes that liberated them from their studios.
They will then tour the main exhibition that opens into a gallery with Renoir’s La Parisienne and La Danseuse, both of which featured in the 1874 exhibition, and other impressionist masterpieces, paintings, drawings and sculptures hung with the more classical work accepted by the official salon that same year.
Agnès Abastado, the director of digital development at the Musée d’Orsay, said the immersive experience was “unique and innovate” but based on painstaking scientific research. The verbal exchanges were scripted from hundreds of letters the young artists exchanged at the time.
“You can go into this exhibition and relive the evening with the artists and discover the genesis of this [artistic] movement. We wanted to recreate the emotion for visitors of the 1874 exhibition, but we took a precise scientific approach so it is based on what we know of this evening,” Abastado said.
“The narrative of the exhibition is invented, but we spent two years studying documents and letters to reconstruct it so everything is as near as possible to the reality.”
While little is known of Nadar’s studio, which was destroyed in 1989, and there were no photographs taken of the first Impressionist exhibition, Stéphane Millière, the head of Gedeon Media Group, which co-produced the VR experience, said they had tracked down architects’ plans, details of lighting and upholstery and even receipts for wallpaper to enable them to reconstruct the studio and the streets around it.
“The boulevard you see in the VR is an exact reproduction of what it would have looked like in 1874,” Millière said. “For visitors, the VR experience makes the exhibition come alive and become something extraordinary.”
Anne Robbins, the co curator of the exhibition, said the aim of it and the VR experience was to “retell the rich and passionate story of the beginning of Impressionism”.
“We look at the circumstances of this [1874] event, we situate it in its time and place and present a selection of the works: some of which are very great chef d’oeuvres while some are less noteworthy paintings and sculptures but are still significant.
“In it we see the novelty of these paintings and how this group of artists who took part in the 1874 exhibition were very diverse and their work eclectic. We want to offer a new look and understanding of impressionism.”
Pierre-Emmanuel Lecerf, the general administrator of the Musée d’Orsay, added that the VR experience was not simply entertainment.
“It allows us to go back in time, to evoke the surroundings, the decor and to bring the painters back to life, but the approach is scientific. It’s not made-up entertainment, but allows us to immerse ourselves in that time and learn,” Lecerf said.
“Then you walk into the exhibition and see the real paintings that are just astonishing. No VR can replace that.”

Copilot in Windows and Windows 365: Helping customers advance in the new era of work
- Melissa Grant, Senior Director, Product Marketing, Windows Enterprise
Are you ready for a new era of productivity with AI technology that is changing the way people work? The modern workplace is constantly evolving, and AI is helping employees to work more efficiently, have more time for creativity and to really adopt this new way of working as the key to delivering business innovation. Every organization is going to need an AI strategy – one that enables them to enjoy all the benefits it unlocks for individual productivity and creativity. And we know as IT leaders, you have a critical role to play.
Today at our digital event “Advancing the New Era of Work,” Jared Spataro, corporate vice president of AI at Work, shared how we are continuing to advance Copilot capabilities across our software, services and devices that businesses rely on with updates from Windows 11, Windows 365 and new Surface devices for business.
3 strategies to advance AI across your business with Windows
At today’s event, I highlighted three strategies for how Microsoft and Windows are helping customers securely and efficiently scale AI across their business.
Advancing your goals with Copilot – your task slayer
The first strategy is to get Copilot in the hands of employees advancing their goals and freeing up their time, so they can accomplish more of what matters. Copilot in Windows is an AI orchestrator, taking on tasks across apps, files, settings, data and the web, so people can get better answers faster, grow their skills, and let Copilot do more of the busy work. This enables employees to focus on strategic work and get things done faster.
At today’s digital event, we shared how we are making Copilot super easy to access by clicking on the Copilot icon from the Windows taskbar or the Copilot key on new Windows PCs 1 and the new Surface devices for business.
In addition, Copilot in Microsoft 365 capabilities are now available in Windows. With Copilot in Windows, people can now select “Work” to enable Copilot in M365 which works across their entire universe of data at work, including emails, meetings, chats, documents and more, plus the web.
Screenshot of a Windows 11 desktop with Copilot in Microsoft 365 in Windows on the right side of the desktop. The work or web tab is set to “Work” which enables Copilot in M365 to work across a person’s entire universe of data at work, including emails, meetings, chats, documents and more, plus the web.
There are a host of new skills Copilot in Windows can do, becoming an adjunct IT assistant and a personal assistant.
Microsoft Copilot improvements for Windows 11
Work without limits – more flexibly and securely
The second strategy focuses on empowering employees to work without limits more securely on their approved device of choice, whether it’s on the new Surface devices for business or streamed from the cloud with a Windows 365 Cloud PC.
The new Surface devices for business announced today are the first AI-powered Surface PCs built exclusively for business. The Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 were designed with features that business customers have been asking for – from Copilot 2 to ports to NFC readers, security and performance with the latest Intel Core Ultra processors and integrated Neural Processing Units to increase battery life and reduce tax on the CPU and GPU. These new devices are built for Copilot and Windows 11, with the new Copilot key that makes accessing AI experiences just a click away.
When you need to deliver Windows across any device for any type of worker, Windows 365 Cloud PCs provide a great option for flexible secure work and ensure that you can control costs and manage more efficiently.
The following are three exciting advancements we’ve made with Windows 365 in how we empower a flexible and secure work experience.
Windows 365 Security Updates
Windows 365 supports single sign-on, Cloud PC encryption, and screen capture and watermarking protection to deter data leaks and data loss.
Single sign-on (SSO) and passwordless authentication support for both Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop are now generally available, along with third-party IDP support. We are actively enabling the same capabilities for Azure Virtual Desktop approved providers.
Watermarking, screen capture protection, and tamper protection support for both Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop are also now generally available. Together, these capabilities help protect against unauthorized access and manipulation of data, help ensure the safety of sensitive information, and help maintain organizational data integrity.
Windows App – over 3 million active hours of usage across platform
At Ignite, we launched a preview of the Windows App — a single, unified app that provides access to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, Remote Desktop, Remote Desktop Services, Microsoft Dev Box and more, across platforms, securely connecting your employees to a Windows Cloud PC from the device of their choice. Since the preview launch, Windows App usage has reached over 3 million active hours across platforms! Customers like Vodafone and Zurich Insurance Group are using Windows App today to enable their employees to securely connect to their cloud resources.
Windows App is available via the Microsoft Store for Windows devices, the web, or TestFlight for Apple devices in public preview.
Windows 365 GPU
Windows 365 has new offerings with Windows 365 GPU support, in preview, which makes it ideal for workloads such as graphic design, image and video rendering, 3D modeling, data processing and visualization applications. When you’re working on one of these powerful GPU-enabled Cloud PCs, you can run apps that use the local GPU resource. Windows 365 GPU support addresses one of the most frequently requested service capabilities for customers looking for simplified management and access to a GPU in a Software as a Service solution.
Innovation with you at the center, so you can become an AI powerhouse
The third strategy involves innovation that puts you and your organization at the center, helping you take advantage of AI by shifting to the cloud with your end-user computing solution that is integrated and secure, so you are future ready to become an AI powerhouse.
Windows is integral to a secure and flexible end-user computing solution set, tightly integrated with core services and applications. Working together, this means that:
- Windows works with AI in Intune to automate and analyze your device estate, ensuring management efficiency and cost savings.
- Devices are always up to date with Windows Autopatch, with the latest security protections.
- Windows empowers an ecosystem of partners to deliver the latest devices, optimized for AI like the new Surface for business devices.
- App developers can create AI-powered apps with Windows AI Studio
We are also advancing sustainability and accessibility as technology advances.
Customers like Kantar moved from on-premises management to cloud management with Microsoft Intune to deploy Windows 11 Enterprise, Windows 365 Cloud PCs, and Surface devices, improving employee productivity and satisfaction while streamlining costly, time-consuming IT processes.
Kantar adopts Windows 11 Enterprise to build the foundation for Copilot and AI
The following are two highlights of the Microsoft end-user computing solution with AI integration and innovation.
