Ford Excursion

ford excursion

No matter what the new Ford Excursion's virtues may be--and there are many--a fair number of folks seem to have a problem seeing past the sheer mass of this thing. Some of these same folks raised an almighty furor when Ford's new imperial-size utility vehicle--now the absolute monarch of the motorized mastodons--was unveiled earlier this year. They portrayed the Excursion as an unmitigated menace to smaller vehicles and, with fuel economy unlikely to top 18 mpg, a serious spewer of carbon dioxide--the so-called greenhouse gas--despite the Excursion's Low-Emission Vehicle status.

To be sure, there's no denying the Excursion's dimensions. At 226.7 inches by 80.0 inches by 77.4 inches (including roof rack), it's 7.2 inches longer, 3.3 inches wider, and between 5.4 and 5.8 inches taller than the current General Motors Suburban. It's also heavier, with curb weights crowding the four-ton frontier.

But let's acquire a little perspective here. The Excursion is one big bopper, for sure, but the Suburban is no wraith, and it's had the full-size-sport-utility market cornered for about 65 years. Although Ford did grab a chunk of the full-size-SUV business with the Expedition and the Lincoln Navigator, Suburban sales continued to soar, topping 150,000 last year. Ford execs couldn't see any reason to allow GM to define and dominate a steadily expanding segment.

"This has been essentially a one-vehicle segment for a long time," says Ford Division president Jim O'Connor. "That's simply unheard of in this business."

Ford's entry into the mastodon market is driven by a couple of compelling motives. First, the Expedition/Navigator program, which succeeded beyond Ford's wildest dreams, proves that the market for king-size sport-utilities still has a considerable potential for growth. People want the big utes for heavy-duty chores, such as towing, that the smaller ones can't handle, or can't handle as well. The Expedition's upper towing limit, for example, is 8300 pounds; a suitably equipped Excursion can drag a trailer weighing up to 10,000. The same goes for the Suburban.

Second, there's money to be made on big expensive SUVs based on large-volume pickups. Financial analysts calculate that every Navigator nets almost $15,000 for FoMoCo. It's not unreasonable to assume that each Excursion will contribute almost as much cash to the corporate bottom line. You don't make that kind of money on Escorts, folks. Or on Explorers.

There are a couple other ironies relative to the initial Excursion backlash. Although it's heftier, the Excursion's dimensions are about the same as those of the largest Ford Econoline van, a vehicle type that has thus far failed to provoke righteous indignation among the self-appointed environmental ombudsmen. For that matter, there are Ford full-size pickups that are a root and a half longer than the Excursion. Where were these people when the civilian edition of the AM General Hummer came along? Of course, the Sierra Club doesn't go after companies that sell only a handful of $70,000-to-$85,000 vehicles.

Speaking of safety, one of the major concerns of the anti-ute hysteria is what happens when a giant SUV, with its high ground clearance, smites an ordinary passenger car. We think Ford has a pretty good answer in the Excursion's patented BlockerBeam system, a tubular steel fixture mounted below and behind the front bumper. If or when hard contact occurs, the beam is designed to prevent the Excursion from riding up and over a smaller vehicle. In the rear, a modified Class IV trailer hitch serves the same function.

The Excursion can ingest up to 165 cubic feet of car go with its center seats folded forward and its rearmost seat removed. Thanks to a pair of rollers, one person can manage the removal task, although it entails crawling inside to lift the base free of the latches. There's room for those ubiquitous four-by-eight-foot sheets of building material on the almost-flat floor, despite the inside spare-tire stowage (which helped to make space for the 44-gallon fuel tank).

2000 Ford Excursion review: Our expert's take

With Dodge getting ready to muscle in on the super-sized sport-utility vehicle market in 2002, you could forgive the marketing folks at General Motors Corp. for wistfully reminiscing about the days when they had a virtual monopoly on the full-size SUV segment.

Ford horned in on that exclusivity several years ago when it introduced the Expedition as a derivative of its F-150 pickup. Last year, the Dearborn-based company upped the ante with the launch of the Excursion, the industry’s largest and heftiest sport-ute to date.

Fortunately, GM had scheduled a full makeover last fall of its big SUV twins, the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL. The good news is that, while Suburban has surrendered the sheer-mass and size crown to the Excursion, it is a considerably better vehicle than its predecessor. And, in many ways, it’s notably better than the competition.

In early June, we tested two nearly identically equipped examples of these head-to-head rivals – a 2000 Ford Excursion Limited 4×4 and a 2000 Chevrolet Suburban LT 4×4.

Ford Excursion Limited 4×4

Our Excursion had a neutral-color cabin trimmed in leather and wood which, upon closer examination, revealed oodles of plastic that looked cheap and tacky in a vehicle that costs this much. Several pieces of trim didn’t fit together well, leaving unsightly gaps.

We found the seating comfort to be better in the front buckets than in the middle and rear benches. Legroom is only marginal in the third row. The rest of the vehicle is amazingly roomy. That holds true for cargo space as well, with the Excursion enjoying a decided edge over the Suburban, with seats up or folded flat.

Ford has bundled a good assortment of safety features into the Excursion, including antilock brakes and side air-bags. Convenience features abound, from air conditioning and a premium sound system to a huge overhead console. There is a comprehensive instrument panel, with excellent rear-seat controls for audio and climate systems.

Two dimensions may prove troublesome to shorter people. The step-in height from the ground to the running board is about 14-12 inches, with another 10-inch hike into the cabin – considerably higher than the Suburban. And the rear liftover height into the cargo bay is a difficult 35 inches making loading groceries difficult.

Our test vehicle was fitted with one of the biggest truck engines on the planet, a massive 6.8-liter V-10 that pumps out 310 horsepower and a whopping 425 lbs. ft. of torque. Even in a vehicle that weighs more than three tons unladen, you’ll feel that muscle when you put your foot to the throttle. Ford doesn’t have to report fuel-economy figures under the government rules for this vehicle class, but you’ll be lucky to realize much more than 10-12 m.p.g. on average.

Again, due in part to the vehicle’s sheer size, we found the steering to be a bit vague and cumbersome, making parking and maneuverability even mor e of a chore than we anticipated. The ride feels bouncy and truck-like.

To sum things up: If towing and cargo capacity are your chief concerns, by all means, buy the Excursion; in that regard, it’s best in class. But with its macho, in-your-face styling, the Excursion will turn off many female buyers. It simply looks and feels too much like an uncivilized brute next to the Suburban.

Chevrolet Suburban LT 4×4

Our test vehicle was leather-trimmed and amply equipped, but the biggest differences from the Excursion were the adaptation of twin captain’s chairs in the middle row and the use of a much smaller engine, a 5.3-liter V-8.

Seating comfort was excellent, with adjustable lumbar support and heat for front occupants. Access to the third row is to squeeze between the two middle buckets – not necessarily a better solution than the Excursion, on which the middle bench slides forward to facilitate entry and exit to the rear. Although it’s not as big ins as the Excursion, the Suburban feels quite roomy at every seating position except the rear most. Visibility is good, and the vehicle is a tad quieter than the Excursion at freeway speeds.

The cargo area, while a bit smaller than on the Excursion, is still exceptional. Chevrolet has freed up space by mounting the full-size spare under the vehicle; Ford mounts the spare inside the cargo bay. Where the Excursion has a glass liftgate and double-Dutch doors in the rear, the Suburban uses a more conventional tailgate.

Safety features are every bit as good as the competition, with the added bonus of shoulder harnesses that are built into the seats. In terms of convenience items, we can’t think of too many features that are lacking on the Suburban, which even comes with GM’s OnStar communications system.

Workmanship is better in nearly every respect, from paint quality to trim fits. GM uses a higher-quality plastic throughout, and the attention to detail is impressive. As far as exterior styling, we’d characterize it as subtle and conservative, but tasteful. Simply put, it works.

With the 5.3-liter engine, acceleration is adequate, but not overwhelming. Likewise, fuel economy is about what you’d expect at around 12-14 mpg.

The power steering is fairly responsive, considering the Suburban’s size and mass, and the antilock brakes work well. The premium ride suspension on our test vehicle seemed to soak up bumps and potholes with surprising ease.

This is still a mighty big horse, and it’s not fun to park but otherwise, the Suburban is amazingly easy to operate.

In short, the Chevrolet Suburban is a good, solid package, with subtle, tasteful styling. It is expensive but equipped like a luxury car. And it remains best in class.

I have owned many trucks in my life, but my 2000 Ford Excursion was the greatest vehicle I have ever owned because of its flawless reliability, luxury, safety beyond anything I could possibly drive, and the gorgeous looks INSIDE & OUT. Freezing AC in all THREE compartments from drivers seat, 2nd row, and third row that are all adjustable. Gorgeous leather, the Best V10 engine ever made, & it still gets decent gas mileage. I love this truck, as FORD went out of their way to beat any truck ever made. MY FAVORITE VEHICLE....my LIMO.

Russia establishes special site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600

!{Model.Description}

A special production site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600 fast reactor under construction has been established at Russia’s Mashinostroitelny Zavod (MSZ - Machine-Building Plant) in Elektrostal (Moscow region), part of Rosatom’s TVEL Fuel Company.

As part of the project, MSZ had upgraded existing facilities fo the production of fuel for fast reactors, TVEL said on 3 March. Unique equipment has been created and installed, and dummy CFR-600 fuel assemblies have already been manufactured for testing.

The new production site was set up to service an export contract between TVEL and the Chinese company CNLY (part of China National Nuclear Corporation - CNNC) for the supply of uranium fuel for CFR-600 reactors. Construction of the first CFR-600 unit started in Xiapu County, in China's Fujian province in late 2017 followed by the second unit in December 2020. The contract is for the start-up fuel load, as well as refuelling for the first seven years. The start of deliveries is scheduled for 2023.

“The Russian nuclear industry has a unique 40 years of experience in operating fast reactors, as well as in the production of fuel for such facilities,” said TVEL President Natalya Nikipelova. “The Fuel Division of Rosatom is fulfilling its obligations within the framework of Russian-Chinese cooperation in the development of fast reactor technologies. These are unique projects when foreign design fuel is produced in Russia. Since 2010, the first Chinese fast neutron reactor CEFR has been operating on fuel manufactured at the Machine-Building Plant, and for the supply of CFR-600 fuel, a team of specialists from MSZ and TVEL has successfully completed a complex high-tech project to modernise production,” she explained.

A special feature of the new section is its versatility: this equipment will be used to produce fuel intended for both the Chinese CFR-600 and CEFR reactors and the Russian BN-600 reactor of the Beloyarsk NPP. In the near future, the production of standard products for the BN-600 will begin.

The contract for the supply of fuel for the CFR-600 was signed in December 2018 as part of a governmental agreement between Russia and China on cooperation in the construction and operation of a demonstration fast neutron reactor in China. This is part of a wider comprehensive programme of cooperation in the nuclear energy sector over the coming decades. This includes serial construction of the latest Russian NPP power units with generation 3+ VVER-1200 reactors at two sites in China (Tianwan and Xudabao NPPs). A package of intergovernmental documents and framework contracts for these projects was signed in 2018 during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
