An Intimate Evening with JOHNNY REID Love Someone Tour

Over an illustrious career spanning more than two decades, JUNO Award winning singer-songwriter Johnny Reid  has captured the hearts of fans and audiences around the world. The critically acclaimed singer is widely known for his lyrical honesty and musical ability, as demonstrated by a vast catalogue of hit songs, platinum selling albums, 26 Canadian Country Music Awards, six JUNO Awards and multiple sold-out national arena tours.

On October 15, 2021, six-time JUNO Award winning singer-songwriter Johnny Reid released his brand new full length album,  Love Someone  via Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company.

Love Someone is the artist’s eleventh album and features 14-tracks in which Reid leans into his country roots. The album marks the artist’s most intimate and inspired collection of songs to date. True to Reid’s wide range of repertoire, the album is a refreshing blend of country, pop and soulful ballads. Highlights include the album’s lead single, the pop country track, “Hey Delilah,” the beautifully heartfelt, “I Owe It All To You,” and “Have A Little Faith In Me” a cover of the John Hiatt classic. As a bonus, the album includes a special acoustic version of Reid’s moving song, “People Like You,” dedicated to the people of Nova Scotia after the devastating tragedy that hit their tight knit community in April 2020. In his new video series, Reid shares the stories behind Love Someone and reveals his songwriting process.

“Love Someone is a call to action,” says Reid. “The pandemic has taught us all a lot about the significance of time and how we spend it. We need to look out for each other now more than ever. ‘Roll your windows down, feel the sun, take some time, love someone.’”

Next up for the multi-platinum artist is a long-awaited live tour. The Love Someone National Tour is set to be one of the longest running Canadian tours in history. The extensive tour will go cross-country, mainly in small theatres in secondary markets, something Reid has wanted to do for quite some time as an opportunity to connect with his audience through storytelling on a more intimate level.

“Take a pinch of Bruce Springsteen, a dash of Bob Seger and enough Rod Stewart to give the mix vocal gravel, and you start to get the vibe of this Scottish-born singer/songwriter.” – The New York Post

IN CONCERT : Love Someone: An Intimate Evening With Johnny Reid

Where : Mary Winspear Centre, 2243 Beacon Ave., Sidney

When: Saturday and Sunday, May 7-8, 7:30 p.m.

Tickets : Sold out

Note : Reid also performs May 5 in Campbell River at the Tidemark Theatre, May 9 in Duncan at the Cowichan Theatre, May 11 in Nanaimo at the Port Theatre, May 12 in Victoria at the McPherson Playhouse, and May 14 in Courtenay at the Sid Williams Theatre

Johnny Reid has played to more than one million fans in the plast decade alone, so there’s certainly a method to the madness of his current tour, one of the lengthiest ever by a Canadian musician.

“For years and years, I’ve asked people to come see me,” Reid, 47, said. “If we played Edmonton, I would ask people from all these different communities in a 150 kilometre radius to come see the show. Why would I do that this time? I thought, why don’t I go visit all these communities where I’ve never been?”

Love Someone: An Intimate Evening With Johnny Reid got underway Feb. 10 in London, Ontario. The tour, in support of the Scottish-Canadian’s new studio album, Love Someone , which arrived in October, lands on Vancouver Island tonight for a sold-out show at Campbell River’s Tidemark Theatre, followed by two sold-out concerts at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney on Saturday and Sunday.

The Nashville-based Reid and his three bandmates will also perform May 9 in Duncan at the Cowichan Theatre, May 11 in Nanaimo at the Port Theatre, May 12 in Victoria at the McPherson Playhouse, and May 14 in Courtenay at the Sid Williams Theatre. The only one with tickets available for sale is the McPherson Playhouse performance.

“The reaction to the tour has been staggering,” Reid said. “Ninety-seven per cent of the shows have been sold out, so that alone is a very humbling experience.”

The routing is unique, for most provinces, in that Reid is playing multiple shows within a small footprint. That’s usually a no-no in the touring business, based on the assumption that diehard fans will purchase the best seats available, thus leaving the less-desirable seats unsold come showtime. Reid’s tour is bucking convention, in that regard. When he caught up with the Times Colonist on Tuesday, he was prepping for his sixth and final sold-out show in Abbotsford.

“If you look at the bigger picture, it’s somewhat daunting,” Reid said. “But I just felt like that this was the right thing. Where we’ve been in the last couple of years, it was a great opportunity to get re-connected by playing these smaller shows.”

During the pre-tour planning process, Reid’s booking agent said he could accommodate any number of dates on the tour. Reid jokingly suggested they start at 100, “and he hit that pretty quick,” he said. “They started adding more shows, and that quickly become 124.”

When it was announced in November, the tour was expected to close June 24 in Nova Scotia. Reid learned yesterday that his booking agent now has shows scheduled for him through October. There is a chance he could surpass the 200-show mark by year’s end. Playing smaller, more intimate shows for audiences who may never have seen him perform has been a surprisingly efficient way of minimizing risk during these uncertain times.

“We were watching all these other concerts go on sale, in these big rooms, and instinctively I wasn’t sure if audiences were going to be ready for that,” he said.

Love Someone is a product of the COVID-19 pandemic — it was was written and recorded amid the lockdown — but Reid chose to focus on songs with a positive perspective for his 11th album. He wrote deeply and reflectively about his life as a father and husband, in hopes that his new music will provide some sense of hope for fans.

He didn’t always have the chance to stop and smell the roses, Reid said with a laugh. He has been releasing albums since the late 1990s, when he was in his early 20s, and his gung-ho attitude/ carpe diem philosophy didn’t always serve him well on those early tours. He’s been forced to conserve his energy on this run, for the sake of his mental and physical health.

“With age comes a wee bit of wisdom,” he said. “I’m trying my best to stay ahead of things. So far, so good.”

Johnny Reid announces his national tour – Love Someone: An Intimate Evening with Johnny Reid

johnny reid love someone tour setlist

Multi-Platinum, JUNO Award-winning singer-songwriter Johnny Reid has announced his 2022 Love Someone tour will kick off on February 10 in London, Ontario, and is set to be one of the longest-running artist tours in Canadian history with over one hundred shows once all tour dates are announced! Reid is making it his mission to connect directly with fans across the country with his tour that boasts a stripped-down set with stops in smaller communities that rarely get to see an artist of Reid’s caliber during a national tour.

The tour falls on the heels of the release of Reid’s 11th studio album, Love Someone , which was released on October 15 via Universal Music Canada. On this 14-track album, Reid returns to his country roots and marks his most intimate and inspired collection of songs to date. Complementing the album’s inherent intimacy, the tour will give fans a rare chance to hear Reid live in a highly up close and personal setting as opposed to the major market venues and colossal crowds he typically draws.

Reid shares his thoughts about this tour,

“The pandemic has taught me a lot about the value of time. I’ve given a lot of thought about how and where I want to spend my time. I’m really excited to bring this tour to as many places as possible. I can’t wait to reconnect with all of the people that have supported me all of these years in a more intimate concert experience.”

Johnny Reid On His New Album “Love Someone,” Strange Gigs, Musical Influences & More

Earlier this month, 6-time JUNO Award winning singer-songwriter Johnny Reid released his brand new full length album Love Someone via Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company. Now available digitally as well as on CD and 2LP 180 Gram Vinyl, Love Someone is Reid’s 11th album and features 14-tracks. It is perhaps his most intimate and inspired collection of songs to date, a refreshing blend of country, pop and soulful ballads. Highlights include the album’s lead single “Hey Delilah,” the heartfelt, “I Owe It All To You,” and a reworking of John Hiatt’s “Have A Little Faith In Me.”

Next up for the multi-platinum artist is a long-awaited live tour. The Love Someone National Tour is set to be one of the longest running Canadian tours in history, with tour dates and details being announced later this year. The extensive tour will go cross-country, mainly in small theatres in secondary markets, something Reid has wanted to do for quite some time as an opportunity to connect with his audience through storytelling on a more intimate level. To date, Reid has earned 26 Canadian Country Music Awards and 6 JUNO Awards, and it would not be surprising if Love Someone helps adds more top-tier accolades to Reid’s award collection in the very near-future.

On October 27, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with Johnny Reid via Zoom, as embedded below. More on Reid and Love Someone can be found by clicking here , here , here , here and here .

Love Someone

For more than two decades, Scotland-born, Canada-bred, and Nashville-based singer-songwriter Johnny Reid has used his rugged, dynamic voice and poignant lyrics to carve out a niche that resists easy categorization. That trend continues with Love Someone, a diverse collection that’s a little bit country, a little bit rock ’n’ roll, and a whole lotta soul. “Everybody keeps telling me we’re living in a singles world, but I’m a great believer in having an album that’s one piece—that sounds like it all belongs together,” Reid tells Apple Music. “I wanted to make sure the songs spoke to me regardless of where you may put them, genre-wise. The second thing was I wanted to cut the entire record in two days. It was really just putting a bunch of great musicians together, putting some mics on the floor, and trying to capture a moment.” The result is a 14-track journey filled with stylistic twists and turns, richly drawn characters, and affecting stories that feel equally at home in Nashville’s Honky Tonk Highway (“Hey Delilah”), Scotland’s Central Lowlands (“Pinstripe Suit”), and Bruce Springsteen’s notebook (“A Good Friend to Me”). Here, Reid narrates that trip, track by track. “I Owe It All to You” “I was thinking about my journey and my wife and I said, ‘I owe everything to her. Everything that I hold value in, whether it be my family, my children, my life, my career—everything, really—I owe it to her.’ And although it’s written as a love song, it’s a song of dedication, too. I wanted to put my heart out to all the people that gave me a chance.” “A Good Friend to Me” “When I first emigrated to Canada at the age of 16 from Scotland, it was pretty difficult. My guitar became a good friend to me. I could sit down and tell my guitar stuff I probably wouldn’t tell anyone else. I thought it was time to write a song about something that’s stood by me for a long time and tell the story of how we met.” “Hey Delilah” “I co-wrote ‘Hey Delilah’ with my piano player, Michael Shand. We were laughing and writing what started as a 6/8-type soul ballad. I was like, ‘What am I missing on this record?’ I needed a take-the-roof-off type of song. And ‘Hey Delilah’ just matched. It turned into what it became on the record because of the great musicians in the room.” “Have a Little Faith in Me” “As a musician, you’re always telling people, ‘It’s going to happen. It’s going to be good. It’s going to work.’ [John Hiatt’s] ‘Have a Little Faith in Me’ is one of my favourite songs of all time. I’ve always loved it.” “Pinstripe Suit” “My dad’s a working man. He doesn’t say much, but a few years ago in Scotland, he said, ‘When I leave, you make sure my tools are in that box with me. Don’t be burying me in a suit.’ I laughed, but he was dead serious. It just stuck with me. I just wanted to pay homage to the working man, the blue-collar man. My dad’s a pure Scotsman, so having the pipes in the song really brought it home. When he heard it, he got quite emotional. He’s harder than a coffin nail, but he got very emotional about it because he’s such a proud working man.” “Fold Your Wings” “I wanted to create something where my voice is the main instrument, and this seemed like a real singer's song. You've got to be able to sing a bit to be able to pull it off.” “One More Try” “I wrote this song several years ago when one of my uncles got himself in a wee bit of trouble. I was telling the story to a friend, and he said, ‘I bet you he's begging for one more try.’ It was funny: ‘Hey, just give me one more try’—a wee bit tongue-in-cheek, a wee bit of humour, which I felt the album needed.” “Old Black Mercury” “I wrote this with Brent Maher, an old friend of mine who produced the first few records. We hadn't seen each other for some time and he said, ‘Do you know how long it was since I left Vegas in that old black Mercury?’ It’s the story about how he came to Nashville. Loaded up this old black Mercury and drove across the country with his wife. Just two crazy kids. It's a song about taking chances. When you're young, there's no book.” “Beautiful You” “This one’s for my daughter. I told a friend once, 'From the moment I laid eyes on her, I was in love. She's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.' She's 11 now, but I think as time goes on, she's going to look back on it and know that she's loved and know exactly how I look at her. I just wanted her to know that it doesn't matter how she looks; she's beautiful to me.” “You’ll Never Be Lonely” “I wanted a couple of songs on there that just make people feel good. It wasn’t brain science; it was just leaning on the old soul songs that I grew up listening to and saying, ‘Hey, look, as long as I wake up in the morning, you’re not going to be lonely. I’m going to love you forever.’ Just a wee fun love song.” “Love Someone” “I was in the studio with the engineers after a session, talking about this guy who stands at the end of the street every day, asking for money. Before I knew it, I picked up a guitar, and they set up a microphone. This song is a call to action. It was like, 'Man, enjoy what you have. Roll your window down. Don't drive past that guy and assume the worst.' It's a song of forgiveness and understanding for people that might be living a life that they don't necessarily want to live.” “I’ll Be Your Everything” “This one's a Percy Sledge cover. I love soul music, and I love the message. I've made my career singing songs of dedication, devotion, and celebrating love, and I just thought to myself, ‘This says everything. I'll be your everything. I'll be there for you.’ [Backup singer] Bekka [Bramlett] wasn't able to record her vocals in time, so I said to my wife, 'Jen, can you sing it? I need a female voice. I know you can do it.' So, there she was. She loved it.” “Who’s Gonna Love You” “My mother was visiting one day and thought I didn't look well, so I went to the walk-in [clinic] to see what the story was. Long story short, I'm rushed to the hospital. My blood pressure's through the roof. It was the very first time that I thought about my mortality. I thought, 'What if something happens here and I don't make it through?' It bothered me. Later, I just started writing about it. It was almost too dark to sing about, but I just knew there was this emotion that I'd been trying to tap into: 'If I'm not here, who's going to love you?' It bothered me that I didn't know the answer.” “People Like You” (Acoustic Version) “I didn't intend to release this song. Later, I felt I needed to put it on a record, but I wanted to make sure that it was different because I wanted to maintain the sonic integrity of the album. We hung back after a session and just sat down and played it acoustically. It's got a home now.”
