Gaviota, Cuba’s Emerging Travel and Tourism Giant

It is vital for Cuba develop its travel and tourism sector.

The communist island nation is struggling with the decline and expected loss of much of the benefits it has received from its economic and ideological relationship with Venezuela. 25 years ago, Cuba almost collapsed when the Soviet Union folded and withdrew all its economic support.

Today, relations are normalizing with the US, and Cuba is taking steps to repair its relationship with its bilateral lenders . Tourism accounts for about 10% of GDP and is a vital source of foreign exchange. Gaviota S.A., led by General Luis Perez Rospide for the Cuban military, is emerging as the most important entity driving growth in the tourism sector. It is part of the military’s giant holding company, GAESA.

Cuba’s central planners are undoubtedly looking at the Dominican Republic’s (DR) economy for a roadmap as to the potential for tourism to be a key driver of growth and a lever to transition the economy away from being dominated by the state. The DR enjoys the top spot for tourism in the Caribbean with 5.14 million arrivals in 2014, a 9.6% growth in arrivals from the prior year.

What’s more compelling is the dynamic link between the DR’s growth in tourists arrivals and GDP growth – a feature that is presently absent in Cuba’s economy.   According to Smith Travel Research, the DR logged 2014 occupancy of 71% for reporting hotels, up 0.56% from the prior year. The reported ADR was $124 (up 10.76%), leading to RevPar of $88.31 (up 11.63%).   The bottom line for the DR economy was 7.5% top line growth in 2014, driven mostly by the hospitality and tourism industry.

Cuba’s communist, single-party government retains almost complete control over the economy. Foreign investors must joint venture with a state-owned entities in order to do business in country. Gaviota has been the partner for most of the country biggest foreign join venture projects involving Meliá Hotels International, Kempinski, Iberostar, Riu, Blau, H10, Blue Diamond, Hotusa and Pestana.

At its 27th anniversary celebration last year, Gaviota announced more 55 hotels in operation, more than 24,000 rooms, sales greater than $650 million and 24,376 workers.

According to state television reports, Gaviota has plans to nearly double its number of hotel rooms to 50,000 by 2020.

Cuba reveals exclusive offerings for the 2023/24 travel season which guarantees to surprise your clients

Vice President of Marketing at Gaviota Tourism Group, Palabras de Frank Paid Oltuski, kicks off Gaviota Travel Mart’s  5th edition with a clear message: “ Cuba is open and fully operational! ”.

The second most important tourism event in Cuba, Gaviota Travel Mart, took place this October in one of the new travel destinations Cayo Cruz.

This year's main focus was on the two new destinations: Cayo Cruz and Cayo Paredon. Cuba is ready to provide new destination experiences with all accommodations and logistics available on these islands.

Gaviota has also provided updates on the new hotel openings, efforts made to recover and diversify the market and introduced new travel products for the upcoming winter season.

Cayo Cruz already has quite a few hotel options available for tourists including adults-only and all-inclusive Valentin Cayo Cruz which hosted Destinos Gaviota presentations.

New for the destination in their own marina. Travellers staying in Cayo Cruz can enjoy all the activities that the marina provides without commuting to Cayo Coco.

What’s more, Cayo Cruz is upgrading the Wi-Fi accessibility across the entire island and providing additional training for the staff in anticipation of the new hotel openings.

The hotel chain has announced that a new brand called INNSiDE by Meliá has entered the destination with a brand new boutique hotel in Havana - INNSiDE Habana Catedral. 

Also, the Sol by Meliá brand will be managing a new property in Holguin called Sol Turquesa Beach (former Occidental Playa Turquesa) with 530 rooms. This beach resort reopened on November 1, 2023.

Also, Sol by Meliá has recently opened the hotel Sol Caribe Beach in Varadero, a resort in the heart of Varadero, which is an excellent 4* option for families and groups in the destination. Vila Galé Hotels

A new hotel chain is now present in Cuba called Vila Galé Hotels.

In partnership with Gaviota, Vila Galé manages the Vila Galé Cayo Paredón, an all-inclusive resort in Cayo Paredón Grande, 25 minutes from the Jardines del Rey airport, in Cayo Coco. 

The resort was built from scratch next to the beach. The property offers 638 rooms, Club Nep for children, an Espaço Galera area dedicated to teenagers, rooms for events, a nautical center, a tennis court and much more. As for the gastronomy, the hotel offers five restaurants and several bars, including pool, beach, and theme bars.

Gaviota Reaches Out To Agents

Cuban tourism giant Gaviota is reaching out in a major way to travel agents in this country as the busy winter season draws closer.

Gaviota – which accounts for nearly half of all hotel rooms in Cuba and has other holdings that include a tour division and marinas – held a Toronto event Tuesday that drew a large number of representatives from household-name hotel brands on the island and is now headed for Montreal for a similar event.

“Gaviota would like to wish you a fantastic winter season,” said Nieves Ricardo of the Cuba Tourist Board’s Toronto office.

Frank Pais Oltuski Rodriguez in turn told the gathering that Gaviota’s growth is over 12% a year and it’s offering those planing to vacation in Cuba “world-renowned [hotel] chains.

“All our hotels and all our facilities have been improved,” he continued.

Pais Oltuski Rodriguez added that Gaviota plans to “cover all our facilities around the country” with WiFi.

Gaviota is reminding travel agents that it has new upscale options in Havana, with the Iberostar Grand Packard having just opened its doors. The hotel sent one of its bartenders to make the classic Cuban drink the mojito for attending Toronto agents, which prompted Ricardo to state “tonight is the best mojito in town.”

That tony Iberostar Grand Hotel Packard follows the opening of the Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski La Habana, another upscale choice for visitors to the Cuban capital.

Xavier Destribats, Kempinski’s chief operating officer for the Americas, told the audience he welcomes the Iberostar Grand Hotel Packard’s arrival, saying competition serves Havana’s hotel trade well.

Meanwhile, Ricardo said Havana isn’t the only part of Cuba seeing hotel openings. “Practically in every destination in Cuba we have new properties,” she said.

The evening saw a large number of hotel stays in different parts of Cuba awarded as draw prizes, prompting Ricardo to declare that “it’s raining prizes in here.”

Destinos Gaviota 2023, a key for tourism in Cuba

Destinos Gaviota 2023 accepts registrations until September 15 and will take place in Cayo Paredón from October 18 to 22, the organizers of the meeting informed.

The event will be attended by tour operators, travel agents, retail agencies and hoteliers, as previous editions proved to be an essential space to promote Cuba, its gastronomy, cities and nature.

In addition, it is time to showcase the Gaviota Group’s commitment to offer excellent services, along with its companies Gaviota Tours, Transgaviota, Marinas Gaviota and AT Comercial.

The 4th edition of Destinos Gaviota 2023 received more than 1,000 participants, including 65 international tour operators, 800 travel agents from 34 countries, airlines, hoteliers and reporters, among others.

During the event, traditions, history and good art were combined to promote the country’s tourist wealth, spokespersons recalled.

Destinos Gaviota 2023 will be the propitious setting for the official presentation of Cayo Paredón Grande and Ramón de Antilla, north of Ciego de Avila (center) and Holguín (east), respectively, as new vacation spots in Cuba.

Grupo Gaviota Presents Its Product Portfolio at The V Edition of Destinos Gaviota 2023

Cuba. The vice president of the Gaviota Group, Frank País Oltuski, presented the products of the Gaviota Group on Thursday 19, within the framework of the Gaviota Destinations 2023 event, which takes place from October 18 to 22 in Cayo Paredón and Cayo Cruz, north of Ciego de Ávila and Holguín.

He welcomed the participants in this new tourist destination, unknown to many, recalling that the first edition of Destinos Gaviota was held precisely in Jardines del Rey.

In his speech, he recounted the characteristics of the Gaviota hotel plant and how the infrastructure was developed in Cayo Paredón and Cayo Cruz, today venues of the event, with first-class accommodations such as the Valentín Cayo Cruz hotel, the Iberostar Selection Esmeralda Coral Level, and the Marina Playa and Spa hotel, in addition to the Playa Hermosa hotels.  Gran Aston and the recently completed Vila Gale, the premiere for this event and the youngest tourist destination in the country.

He referred to the magnificent infrastructure that the key is experiencing, with significant accessibility to the Jardines del Rey International Airport, in Cayo Coco. They have a marina with an aquarium-dolphinarium, with different nautical options and the Sun Cruise excursions.

He highlighted the work carried out by the Gaviota Tours Travel Agency and Transgaviota, which make available to visitors a varied portfolio of excursions and trips to Ciego de Ávila, Camagüey, among others.

He took the opportunity to reiterate that Gaviota is ready for the next season in destinations of Havana, Varadero, the northern keys of the country, Holguín and Baracoa. Currently, 100 percent of Gaviota’s facilities have Wi-Fi service, including the beach area and aboard the Crucero del Sol catamarans.

Finally, he thanked everyone for their presence and urged them to know the potential of Cayo Paredón and Cayo Cruz, scenarios that are part of Jardines del Rey, where Gaviota has 15 facilities and which will host the next International Tourism Fair, FITCUBA 2024.

During the first day of work, presentations of the different Cuban hotel chains will be made.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.
