Getting Around Dublin: Guide to Public Transportation

Dublin Bus, LUAS, DART and more for trips around the capital

Ireland's capital city is compact and easy to navigate on foot, which means that if you plan to stay in the city center, you might not ever need to take public transportation in Dublin. The central area is small enough that walking is usually the most efficient way to get around the city. But even though Dublin is fairly condensed, it still has a fantastic and easy-to-use public transportation system. Between the bus, LUAS, DART and train networks, there are so many ways to get around Dublin, that you'll actually be spoilt for choice.

With extensive public transportation at the ready, there is really no reason to ever drive a rental car into Dublin as a tourist. Cars bring all sorts of additional problems with traffic jams, getting lost or caught in one-way systems even locals have problems with, and high rates for paid parking. In fact, instead of driving yourself, you are much better off using public transportation or taking a taxi in Dublin when walking just won’t do.

How to Ride the Bus in Dublin

There is no subway or underground system in Dublin, so the best transportation option inside the city center is the bus.

The name might be a dead giveaway, but Dublin Bus is the main provider of road-based public transport in the Irish capital. If, however, you are only planning on seeing the main sites in Dublin , it might be worth choosing a hop-on-hop-off tourist bus that is run by a private tour company rather than depending on the public bus. These tours stop near all the major attractions, tickets cost more than the regular bus fare but are valid for the whole day, and the buses take a circular route so there is really no chance of getting lost.

However, if you are feeling up for the rush of navigating a new city like a local, or are planning to go off the well-beaten track, Dublin Bus is the provider of choice. The first order of business should be to get a bus map, preferably at the main office on O'Connell Street , where they have all the information you need  including tour packages .

Buses in Dublin are double-decker style and, like all traffic, drive on the left side of the road (an important point to remember when you are trying to decide which direction to take the bus).

Learning how to catch a Dublin Bus  takes a bit of practice because you may need to flag them down to stop, even when you are standing at a marked stop (which are blue signs with the bus company’s logo). Some of the routes covered by Dublin Bus can, at times, be on long and winding roads, and connections to other routes might be inconvenient. But you will get almost anywhere in the capital and suburbs for an affordable price.

You can buy tickets directly on the bus, but you can only do so using Euro coins. No bills or cards are accepted and no change is given, so it is best to have the exact fare already counted out in coins in your hand, ready to drop into the machine next to the driver when you board.

Adult fares for Dublin Bus purchased on board are:

  • €2.15 (for Stages 1-3, which covers all journeys within the city center)
  • €3.00 (for Stages 4-13)
  • €3.30 (over 13 Stages)
  • €7.00 (Airlink 474 bus to the Dublin Airport )

One child under 5 can travel for free with a paying adult.

Child fares (up to age 16) for Dublin Bus purchased on board are:

  • €1.00 during school hours (Monday to Friday until 7 p.m. and Saturday until 1:30 p.m.)
  • €1.30 during all other hours

You can use the official online Fare Calculator to determine the correct fare if you are not sure of how many stages you will pass through. Or, simply ask your driver. Paying the correct fare is important because there are sometimes ticket inspections and having the wrong ticket can result in a €100 fine.

If you are planning to take Dublin Bus or other Dublin public transportation extensively, it may be worth investing in the LeapCard . The reloadable travel card offers slightly lower fares on every journey and using one means you will never have any hassle dealing with cash on board.

LUAS: Tram into the City Center

The LUAS (initially known as the Dublin Light Rail System) is tram connecting the city center to the suburbs that is named after the Irish word for "speed.” Dublin's LUAS is the city’s newest form of public transportation and includes two lines: one starting at Brides Glen to Broombridge (green line), the other running from Tallaght to The Point and from Saggart to Connolly (red line).

LUAS trams are fairly fast, but they are also very popular, meaning they can often be slightly cramped at rush hour. They run along roads and on some stretches of dedicated track. The LeapCard is also valid on the LUAS, or tickets can be purchased on board. You can find a map of stops, timetables and pricing information on the LUAS website .

DART: Train on a Coastal Route

Dublin Area Rapid Transit , always shortened to DART, is one of the most convenient ways of public transport in Dublin – but only if you are planning to go from north to south (or vice versa), and if you are planning to travel along the coastline of Dublin Bay. These trains are the easiest and fastest way to visit Malahide (with its pretty castle ) and  Howth  in the north, down to Greystones in the south.

These Dublin neighborhoods make for fantastic trips out of the city, but keep in mind that they are also major commuter towns so trains will be crowded in the mornings and evenings. DART trains are easy to use and also connect (in a loose, geographical sense) to the LUAS at Connolly Station, and to suburban and intercity services at several other stations as well.

The Suburban Rail Network

As the name implies — the Suburban Rail Network serves mainly the Dublin suburbs and the so-called "commuter belt." The long-distance train rides may be bad news for the workforce (long commutes from satellite towns), but the rail network offers intrepid travelers the chance to reach interesting Irish towns that lie quite far beyond Dublin. Trains are frequent during rush hour but you may find long pauses in the timetables during the middle of the day and on weekend. The Suburban Rail Network is not very helpful for travel within central Dublin and is mostly used for destinations that lie off the DART routes.

Bus Eiréann

Bus Eiréann is Ireland's national bus transportation provider in the Republic, but it does not run in competition with Dublin Bus. This means that you may see Bus Eiréann running on the same routes or using the same stops as Dublin Bus with one major difference: Bus Eiréann buses will only pick up passengers traveling outbound, to destinations beyond the reach of Dublin Bus, and will only drop off passengers traveling inbound from these same places. You cannot use Bus Eiréann for trips within Dublin city center, but it is worth knowing about the well-used service if you are traveling to or from Dublin to other parts of Ireland.

Specifically, you may find some connections into the suburbs and into the "commuter belt" (extending ever further) that suit your travel needs. These same destinations within the greater Dublin area may also be reachable by Dublin Bus, but Bus Eiréann will be the faster (and more expensive) option by road.

Bus Eiréann is at its best if used for  day-trips to destinations outside Dublin . For timetable and services information, check the  Bus Eiréann homepage  — which might also give you some good travel deals when booking ahead online. Otherwise, you can pay for tickets inside Bus Eiréann stations or directly to the driver when boarding. Unlike Dublin Bus’s double-decker fleet, Bus Eiréann buses are usually newer, coach-style buses with free WiFi and even charging ports in the seats. Luggage can be stored underneath the bus before boarding.

Taxis are regarded as part of Dublin's public transport system and since deregulation, actually finding a taxi has become much less of a problem. Dublin taxi drivers have a bit of a reputation for being ready to chat, joke, and share their (sometimes uninvited) opinions on everything from politics to family matters. Some unscrupulous cabbies have been known to take the unwary tourist down the not-really-scenic-but-certainly-more-profitable route, but this is not common.

Taking a taxi in Dublin city is recommended particularly at night if it means you can avoid walking down poorly lit side streets, or at any time of day to save journey time if there is no alternative direct service. A taxi to and from the airport can also be a good option, especially if you are not staying near convenient bus stops for the airport bus routes. Taxi prices are, naturally, higher than those of all other public transport alternatives — but bear in mind that with a taxi you pay for the whole cab, while on other services you pay per passenger. Do the math because sharing a taxi between other travelers in your group can work out to be quite an affordable option.

Getting to and From Dublin Airport by Public Transport

There are multiple ways to reach Dublin Airport using public transportation but the most affordable is by bus — either those run by Dublin Bus or by other private companies. The main transportation options between the airport and the city are:

  • Bus : There are a number of different buses available here, for both travel into Dublin, and travel to other Irish destinations. All buses leave within an easy walking distance of Terminal 1 but the walk to more modern Terminal 2 is considerably longer. The most popular bus is Airlink 747 which makes multiple stops in the city center and costs €7 for a one-way ticket. All other buses to the city center stop in the same area at the airport so you can also choose to take whichever arrives first.
  • Taxi : There is a well-signposted and controlled staging area for taxis outside both terminals. Bear in mind that a taxi might start to make economic sense when you have a group of four or more passengers (six- and seven-seaters are available, but you may have to wait a bit), and it will drop you off in front of your destination, rather than at the nearest stop on a pre-planned route like the bus.

There is no train connection to Dublin Airport though plans to add a rail link have been in the discussion phase for many years.

Rental Cars in Dublin

Driving in Dublin is not recommended because of traffic, the small size of the city center, the convenience of public transportation and the cost of parking. If you do choose to rent a car in Dublin, there are a few small rental agencies in residential areas of the city but it is best to pick up a car at one of the agencies near the Dublin Airport. Here you will find a greater selection (and free shuttles to and from the terminals). Keep in mind that you will have to pay a toll to enter Dublin via the M50.

Getting Around Dublin Without The Hassle: A Guide To Public Transportation In Dublin

For new visitors to the city, getting around Dublin and, particularly, getting to know the ins and outs of public transportation in Dublin, can be tricky.

Can  be tricky. However, once you get the hang of it, you’ll be zipping around the city car-free without much stress.

From the DART and the Luas to Dublin Bus and Irish Rail, there are numerous ways for getting around Dublin, regardless of where you’re staying.

In the guide below, you’ll discover everything you need to know about using public transportation in Dublin. Dive on in!

Table of Contents

Some quick need-to-knows about getting around Dublin

So, public transportation in Dublin can be confusing, and there’s some things to get your head around before you look at each method of getting around Dublin.

1. Different Dublin transport types

While it doesn’t boast an underground rapid transit system like larger European capitals, Dublin is still crisscrossed by a network of efficient public transport routes. The traditional rail system is complemented by the DART commuter rail network and, more recently, two light rail/tram lines called the Luas. There are also a ton of Dublin Bus routes stretching all over the city.

2. Picking a good base is key

If you pre-plan ahead you’ll save time and money when you arrive. Decide the things you’d really like to see in Dublin (see our Dublin attractions guide), first, and this’ll give you an idea of where to stay in Dublin . Work out the most cost-effective way of getting around (Dublin’s not a small city but the centre is very walkable) and then pick the base that will give you the most hassle-free trip.

3. Other options

Individual mobility is becoming ever more popular and there are plenty of options in Dublin if you want to go that route (and I don’t just mean walking!). You can go the staple route of renting a car in Dublin , but there are also pick-up-and-go bikes available for hire across the city for a small fee. And of course, you can always just jump in a taxi (Uber is available in Dublin).

4. Getting from the airport to the city

As someone who has taken many different airport-to-city transfers in the past, I know a poor operation when I see one! But Dublin’s Airlink Express is definitely in the upper-tier. Frequent, comfortable and largely hassle-free, it’ll whisk you from Dublin airport to the city centre in around 30 minutes (depending on traffic).

5. The DoDublin card

If you don’t want the hassle of working out how to pay for public transportation in Dublin, then the DoDublin card might be the way to go. For €45.00, you’ll have 72 hours of access to Dublin’s bus, Luas, DART and train networks, as well as 48 hours on the Hop on Hop off sightseeing tour. Not bad is it!

6. The Leap Visitor Card

The Leap Visitor card  offers unlimited travel on Dublin City Bus, Luas, DART, and Commuter Rail for 1, 3, or 7 days for a fixed price.

An overview of public transportation in Dublin

So, there are numerous types of public transportation in Dublin, depending on how you like to travel and how much you want to spend.

Below, you’ll find everything from the various buses in Dublin and the Luas, to the DART and how to get around Dublin if you’re only here for a few days.

1. Buses in Dublin

getting around dublin

Easily recognisible from their bright yellow exteriors, you’ll see the buses in Dublin all over the city and are one of the most convenient and practical ways to get around. They run from the city centre (a ton leave from O’Connell Street ) to the outer suburbs and vice versa and usually run from 06:00 in the morning (10:00 on Sundays) until around 23:30 in the evening.

How to get the bus

Look out on the street for the traditional bus stop markers resembling big blue or green lollipops. There will be a schedule posted on revolving notice boards at bus stops, while to tell where a bus is going, check the destination street and bus number displayed above its front window.

Ticket prices

Prices for the buses in Dublin are generally calculated on a system based on distance travelled (Daytime journeys that take place entirely within the designated “City Centre Zone” cost €0.50, for example). The further you go the more you pay. Also, make sure you have the exact fare in coins or are carrying a Leap Card (definitely recommend this for visitors).

2. The DART

the DART train

The Dublin Area Rapid Transit (or DART) is an electrified commuter rail railway network first opened back in 1984 and serving 31 stations, stretching from Malahide in the north to Greystones down in County Wicklow.

How to get the DART

Check to see if the DART reaches your area and simply head to the station if it does and buy your ticket. The DART is a quicker way of getting about than the bus and serves some lovely coastal parts of Dublin. DART services operate every 10 minutes Monday to Saturday from around 6am to midnight and Sunday from 9:30am to 11pm

Prices are calculated depending on how far you travel but would roughly be between 3 and 4 euros and rarely more than 6. An adult 3-day ticket costs €28.50 and isn’t a bad idea if you’re spending a weekend at the seaside and hopping between city and coast.

3. The LUAS

the luas

There are only two lines (Red and Green) of the sleek Luas tram system but they’re smooth, efficient and serve the city centre well (the Red Line is handy for visitors wanting to check out the Phoenix Park , for example).

How to get the LUAS

Since they run along already existing streets, the Luas trams are pretty easy to spot and there are ticket machines at each stop. They operate from 05:30 to 00:30 Monday to Friday, while on Saturdays they begin slightly later at 06:30 and on Sundays operate between 07:00 and 23:30. Look out for the glass stops with ticket machines alongside.

Like the other methods of getting around Dublin, ticket prices depend on the length of your journey and how many city zones you cross. A single peak travel journey within the city center (zone 1) costs €1.54, rising to €2.50 for rides to zones 5 through 8. Purchase your ticket in advance using coins, paper money, or card. Leap Cards are also accepted on the Luas.

4. Irish Rail

irish rail

To be honest, you probably won’t get a whole lot of use out of the national rail network ( Iarnród Éireann ) if you just want to zip around the city but it’s worth knowing about if you’re staying in Ireland for a longer period of time and plan to travel long distances.

How to get Irish Rail

If you do plan on travelling across Ireland from Dublin then there are two main stations you’ll need. Dublin Connolly is the busiest and has regular links with Belfast and the north of Ireland, while Heuston serves the south, southwest and west of Ireland.

Ticket prices vary wildly due to the distances involved (Dublin to Belfast is around €20 for example). But if you do get a local train across Dublin then you shouldn’t have to pay much more than €6. Again, you can buy tickets at the station, but you can also get them online in advance (highly recommended).

FAQs about getting around Dublin

We’ve had a lot of questions over the years asking about everything from ‘how to get around Dublin without a car?’ to ‘What’s the cheapest public transportation in Dublin?’.

In the section below, we’ve popped in the most FAQs that we’ve received. If you have a question that we haven’t tackled, ask away in the comments section below.

What is the best way to get around Dublin?

This will be dependent on 1, where you’re starting from and 2, where you’re going. Personally, I’d take Irish Rail and the DART over Dublin Bus any day.

How do you get around Dublin Ireland without a car?

Getting around Dublin without a car is easy. There are heaps of buses in Dublin, lots of train and DART stations and there’s also the Luas, too.

What public transportation in Dublin is the most comfortable?

I’d argue that (once they’re not packed!) the trains and DART are the most comfortable method of getting around Dublin.

The best bus tours in Dublin

Author\'s image

Go sightseeing in Dublin on a city bus tour, and see all the landmarks in one day.

If you’re short on time, a bus tour is a great way to see Dublin. You can tick off all the major sights in one fell swoop, without your step counter going through the roof.

Whether you want to pack in as much as you can, or simply see the sights from the comfort of a double decker bus, these tours will show you the best of Dublin.

  • 1 . Hop On Hop Off Tour by DoDublin Tours
  • 2 . Big Bus Dublin
  • 3 . City Sightseeing
  • 4 . Vintage Tea Trips
  • 5 . What to see in Dublin

Seeing the city by bus means you don’t need to decide between visiting Kilmainham Gaol or the Phoenix Park , because you can do it all in one day, hopping on and off at your leisure. Better still, you’ll often be accompanied by a tour guide who can point out the local hotspots as you sail on past.

It's also a cost-effective way to see the city, particularly if tickets to museums or other attractions are thrown into the mix. As a general rule, you can expect to pay around €30 for a 24-hour hop on, hop off tour, or around €35 for a two-day ticket. On most of the tours, at least one child goes free per adult, making family tours even better value.

But bus tours aren’t just for seeing the city. Nearby attractions are also at your fingertips, on tours that take you all around Ireland without you having to hire a car or navigate public transport. You can head off to places like the Cliffs of Moher or the Giant's Causeway and be back in the city by nightfall.

Hop On Hop Off Tour by DoDublin Tours

You’ll spot these bright green buses all over the city. Their hop on, hop off tours take in all the major sights, including the Guinness Storehouse, Trinity College and EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum . But they also stop off at the smaller attractions, like Teeling Whiskey Distillery in the Liberties and Marsh’s Library , right next to St Patrick’s Cathedral . A ticket also includes entry to the Little Museum of Dublin and a Pat Liddy's walking tour . Buses depart from O’Connell Street regularly.

If you want to get out of the city, they also run tours south to Wicklow and Glendalough, or north up to Belfast and the Causeway Coast. They also offer a Ghostbus tour of Dublin, where you’ll visit a medieval vault and a city graveyard, accompanied by some fairly theatrical characters. While their original tour is most definitely not for kids, they’ve now created a version for children aged between 7-14.

Big Bus Dublin

This bus tour takes in 25 stops around Dublin, with a guide pointing out all the sights of the city, or a pre-recorded commentary available in eight languages. As well as all the locations set in the middle of the city, the tours head out to Dublin Zoo in the Phoenix Park, as well as Kilmainham Gaol and Richmond Barracks . Even if you don’t hop off and explore those sights, the trip will give you a broader sense of Dublin’s geography away from the city centre. The regular tours kick off from O’Connell Street, check Big Bus Tours Dublin for up-to-date departure times.

All tickets include a walking tour, and there’s free Wi-Fi on the bus, too — so you can plot out your next move, or post a video of the on-board singalongs to Instagram. They also offer a night tour , so you can see all the landmarks illuminated after dark, like the lights of St Patrick’s Cathedral or the buildings that line the River Liffey. There’s also a deluxe package available, which includes the hop on, hop off ticket for three days, a night tour and a half day coastal tour to the fishing village of Howth .

City Sightseeing

There are more than 30 stops on the City Sightseeing hop on, hop off tour, including Jeanie Johnston , a replica famine ship on the River Liffey, and the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Kilmainham. Buses run every hour, departing from Trinity College.

As well as the included stops in the city, you can get picked up in the morning from bus stops around Ballsbridge, which is handy if you’re staying in that neighbourhood and want to see the more central sights without getting separate transport into town.

They also offer a river cruise along the Liffey, giving you a unique perspective of the city from the water. Starting at Bachelor’s Walk, you’ll sail under O’Connell Bridge and past the 18th-century Custom House, all the way to the glass and steel architecture of the Docklands.

Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA)

Vintage tea trips.

This isn’t a traditional bus tour. Instead of hopping off at various spots, you’ll stay on the vintage bus for the duration of your journey, passing the highlights of the city as you tuck into afternoon tea accompanied by the sounds of 1950s jazz. You’ll see sights like Trinity College, the Phoenix Park and Christ Church Cathedral , with freshly made sandwiches, desserts and pastries on the table in front of you.

DoDublin Freedom Ticket: Is It Worth Purchasing?

dodublin freedom ticket

The DoDublin 72 Hour Freedom Ticket has been getting A LOT of attention lately, and for good reason. Unlimited public transport for a set price in one of Europe’s most expensive cities; what more could you want?

Let’s face it: making your way around Dublin won’t be cheap, especially if you’re spending a whole day on transport. Your funds will be low in no time. But that’s where the DoDublin Pass comes into play.

In this post, we’re going to give you a full rundown of the DoDublin Freedom Pass. We’ll fill you in on everything you need to know before you think about purchasing one, including what you get, how much you can save, who should and shouldn’t invest, and a ton of other important bits of information that you should know.

This webpage contains some links that may be affiliate links. If you make a purchase through one of these links, we may earn a commission at no added cost to you.

What Is The DoDublin Freedom Ticket?

The DoDublin Travel Card gives visitors unlimited access to Dublin’s large-scale transport network, whether you want to take the bus around the city or travel anywhere on the train. Along with that, you’ll also receive a free ride on one of the company’s hop-on, hop-off tour buses that bring you to Dublin’s famous sights.

It’s a pass designed for visitors who plan to use a lot of the city’s public transport system on their visit.

What’s Included With The Ticket?

dodublin freedom ticket

You get unlimited access to Dublin’s transport network. It’s a 72 hour travel card with some add-ons. But, what exactly can you use with the Pass? Let’s fill you in on what you get if you redeem the pass.

The pass includes:

  • 72 hours of access to the Dublin Bus Network – This includes city buses that go directly to and from Dublin Airport. These routes are the 41+16
  • 72 hours of access to the Luas which is Dublin’s tram network
  • 72 hours of access to the DART and commuter trains in the Dublin area
  • 72 hours of access to the Go-Ahead public buses of Dublin
  • 48 hours of access to the DoDubin’s Hop On Hop Off Tour

Wow, That All Sounds Great, But How Much Does It Cost?

dodublin freedom ticket

There’s a one-set fee of 45 euros. Once you pay that fee, you’ll have access to all the forms of transport listed above.

45 euros for unlimited transport around the city is a bargain. If you know Dublin, you’ll know that using transport isn’t cheap.

Be aware, prices can change at short notice.

What’s The Hop On Hop Off Tour?

dodublin freedom ticket

The DoDublin Freedom Ticket 3-day travel card gives you free transport and 48 hours of access to the DoDublin Hop On Hop Off Tour , which is one of the most popular sightseeing bus tours in the city of Dublin. Aren’t you lucky?

The tour is strategically planned to drop visitors close to the top tourist attractions in Dublin. Some of the stops include Trinity College, The Guinness Storehouse , Dublin Zoo , and many, many more. It’s a great attraction for the likes of somebody who’s never visited the city before and would love to experience a bus trip.

On the bus, you’ll have running commentary from one of Fáilte Ireland’s drivers, who’ll know the city like the back of their hand.

If all of that wasn’t enough, visitors will also get free tickets for the Pat Liddy Walking Tour and the Little Museum of Dublin.

Note: kids under 15 go free with every adult ticket for the green bus tour, so don’t be afraid to bring your little nippers along.

Where Can You Buy Do Dublin Freedom Ticket?

dodublin freedom ticket

You can only purchase the ticket from DoDublin’s website or the city centre desk. Once the ticket is purchased, it can be picked up at multiple locations, including:

  • Arrivals Hall, Terminal 1,  Dublin Airport
  • Dublin Bus Head Office, Upper O’Connell Street
  • Day Tours and Trips Tickets Kiosk, St. Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre

The ticket will only work in printed form. Mobile copies will not work at any of the scanners. Talk about old-fashioned.

Luxury Rental Cars

How Does It Work?

dodublin freedom ticket

Your 72-hour period begins once you activate your ticket. To activate it, you must hold it up to the scanner, which is on every mode of transport that’s included with the freedom card. When you scan the ticket, you should hear a beep. That’s when you know your ticket has been activated.

For the Luas (tram), the scanner will be at each stop. All you have to do is scan before you get on, and you’re good to go. It’s a similar situation with the rail lines; just scan through the gates before you get to your platform.

How Much Money Can You Save?

dodublin freedom ticket

Three days of transport mustn’t cost that much, right? Sadly, in Dublin city it does. Between bus and coach fares, and train rides out to the coast, you’d be surprised at how much you’d actually spend.

Purchasing a Dublin transport pass will save somebody a lot of money if they’re planning on doing a lot of sightseeing. Some of the tourist attractions are quite a bit outside of the centre, so you’ll have to get public transport if you want to see them unless you’re planning on renting a car or getting a taxi.

See below for some examples of how much you can save.

dodublin freedom ticket

1 Day Cost = Total: 17 euros

  • Bus Journey From Dublin Airport To The City Centre – 7 euros
  • Bus Journey From O’Connell Street To Dublin Zoo – 2 euros
  • Bus Journey From Dublin Zoo To Connolly Train Station – 1 euro
  • Train From Connolly Train Station To Dun Laoghaire – 3.50 euros
  • Train From Dun Laoghaire To Conolly Train Station – 3.50 euros

As you can see in the example above, it cost 17 euros for one day without the pass. If you were to spend that every day, it would cost 51 euros, and that’s before you add in the DoDublin Green Hop On Hop Off Tour, which costs 32 euros for a 48-hour adult pass, which you get. That’s some pretty damn good savings.

dublin bus ticket tourist

Having said that, if you’re planning on not using public transport that much and only using the bus to get from and to the airport, it wouldn’t be worth your while to purchase.

You’ll know your own needs as a visitor to a city.

What You Should Know Before Purchasing The Ticket

dodublin freedom ticket

Before you purchase the pass, there are some important bits of information you need to know, so let’s get into them.

  • The Main Focus Is Public Transport: The Freedom Card is an unlimited travel card that has been created so tourists can make their way around the city affordably. Don’t get it confused with the GoDublin City Sightseeing Pass , which gives you entry to some of the top tours and attractions in the city.
  • Discounts For Large Groups: If you’re visiting Dublin with a group that’s on the larger side, you may be entitled to a discount voucher. Be sure to contact DoDublin to see if they’ll knock off a few quid from your bill.
  • Refunds: Getting a refund from DoDublin will depend on each individual’s personal situation. Contact the company as soon as possible if you’ve changed your mind and want to cancel the pass. See their cancellation policy for more details.
  • It’s Possible Just To Take The Dublin Tourist Bus: Maybe you’re not interested in public transport, but want to take a ride on the green hop on hop off bus. That’s totally doable. Click here to book the DoDublin Bus Tour.
  • Senior Citizens And Students Get A Discount: Yes, you read that right. All senior citizens and students are entitled to a 10% discount. Make sure you bring some ID to prove it.

How To Get The Most Out Of Dublin Freedom Pass

dodublin freedom ticket

Young Adult

Young adult leap card image

What is a Young Adult Card? A Young Adult card is a TFI Leap Card that can be used to pay for travel by anyone who is 19 to 25 years old, up to their 26th birthday. The user’s name and photograph is printed on it

Applications can only be completed online at leapcard.ie . You will need to upload proof of your age and take a live selfie when ordering the card online. A valid passport, EU National ID, Driver's Licence or Learner Permit is the only documentation accepted for proof of age.

If you are over 25 and enrolled in full time education (16 hours a week or more), including further education and training, you can apply for the student card.

What is Travel Credit? Travel Credit works in a similar way to mobile phone credit. It is a cash value which you load onto your card and every time you use the card to travel, the cost of the journey is deducted. You can top-up your card online, at a postpoint  outlet and at Luas and Irish Rail ticket machines or on the official Leap Top-Up App for iPhone and Android.

What is Leap Card Fare Capping? Fare Capping is really easy. The Leap Card system caps the use of travel credit, so once you have taken trips using your travel credit that add up to the equivalent to the daily or weekly cap value, you can continue to travel as normal, but no further travel credit will be taken from your card.

The weekly cap is measured on a calendar week, starting on Monday and finishing on Sunday. The daily cap is €2.80 and the weekly cap is €11.00.

Please note the weekly capping period starts at 4:30am on Monday to 4:29am the following Monday, the amount spent is reset and cannot be carried over. A new daily capping period starts at 4:30am each day and the amount spent is reset and cannot be carried over.

There is also a multi-operator cap if you are travelling on Dublin Bus, Luas, DART and Commuter Rail.

The daily cap is €4.00 and the weekly Cap is €16.00. When the cap is reached you should continue to touch on as normal to have a valid ticket.

Fares paid on Tours do not count towards the cap. Any fares paid for a travelling companion do not count towards the cap.

A Rambler ticket will suit you if you take at least 2 buses a day on the days you use the bus.

Ticket Type:

  • Valid for 5 or 30 days of unlimited travel for consecutive or non-consecutive days of travel.
  • Valid on Dublin Bus scheduled services including Nitelink and Xpresso (excluding Tours, Special Events and Private Contract services).
  • Rambler tickets can be bought and loaded on to a Leap Card  or at any Postpoint Outlet
  • Register your Leap Card to protect against loss or theft.
  • If you are using your rambler ticket for the first time after 8pm the ticket machine will deduct travel credit from your card as you would not be getting the value of a full day on your rambler ticket. However, if you wish to activate one day on your rambler ticket after 8pm please go to the driver and ask them to take a day from your rambler ticket.

Working late or starting the day early? We offer reliable, low-cost alternatives that take the hassle out of late night travel.  Dublin Bus operates Nitelink routes departing from Westmoreland Street and D’Olier Street. All routes operate Friday and Saturday services only.

Our Nitelink service complements our 24-hour services which are in operation seven days a week across ten routes.
